This study examined the predictive role of several learner factors in second language (L2) incidental vocabulary acquisition through reading: L2 proficiency, motivation, anxiety, and mastery of strategies. Participants were 129 English learners in a comprehensive university in China. Participants read two English texts and were given an unannounced vocabulary test to assess their incidental vocabulary acquisition. Their levels of motivation, anxiety, and mastery of strategies were measured by three specifically designed instruments that targeted incidental vocabulary acquisition. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that L2 proficiency, anxiety, and mastery of strategies were positive and significant predictors of incidental vocabulary acquisition, although motivation was not. This confirms the role that learners' linguistic, affective, and cognitive features play in L2 incidental vocabulary acquisition.

Background: Depression affects the oral health of older adults; however, little is known about its impact on oral health among rural older adults in developing countries, which warrants further research. Taking China as an example, there is a large population base of rural older adults suffering from depression, and many rural older people also have long-term oral health problems, which have seriously affected their quality of life in later life. Therefore, this study aimed to explore linear and non-linear associations of depressive symptoms with oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices among rural older adults in China. Methods: From November 2020 to December 2020, 1,902 rural community-dwelling older people aged 60 years and older were investigated, via a cross-sectional survey. The general information, depressive status, oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the participants were obtained through face-to-face structured questionnaires. Among them, the Zung Depression Self-Rating Scale was used to investigate the depressive symptoms of the participants in this survey. The generalized linear model and classification and regression tree model were used, separately. Results: Based on linear analysis results, we found that minimal to mild depressive symptoms [regression coefficient (β) = -0.345; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.582 to -0.109, P = 0.004] and depressive symptoms (β = -1.064; 95% CI: -1.982 to -0.146, P = 0.023) were significantly correlated with oral health knowledge. A negative correlation was observed between minimal to mild depressive symptoms (β = -0.385; 95% CI: -0.600 to -0.170, P < 0.001) and oral health attitudes. In addition, while both minimal to mild depressive symptoms (β = 0.018; 95% CI: -0.312 to 0.347, P = 0.916) and depressive symptoms (β = 0.604; 95% CI: -0.675 to 1.883, P = 0.355) were associated with oral health practices. Furthermore, the non-linear analysis showed a combined effect of depressive symptoms on oral health attitudes, indicating that older people of a younger age, not living alone, and not suffering from depressive symptoms are more likely to report better oral health attitudes. Conclusion: Both the linear and non-linear analyses in our study showed that depressive symptoms are significantly correlated with the poor oral health attitudes of older adults in rural communities. Furthermore, depressive symptoms were associated with oral health knowledge in the linear analysis. However, no statistically significant difference was found between depressive symptoms and oral health practices in either analysis. This research deepens our knowledge and understanding of relevant evidence in the mental and oral health of people in later life. In addition, analyzing the factors that affect the oral health of older people from the perspective of their depressive status provides new thinking directions and scientific references for improving the oral health of older adults in practical life. We examined the roles of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, syntactic awareness in English, and English vocabulary knowledge in the English reading comprehension of Chinese-speaking university students (n = 278). Results suggested a two-factor model of a General Reading Knowledge factor (metacognitive awareness employed during the English reading process) and a Second Language (L2) Specific Knowledge factor (comprising vocabulary knowledge and syntactic awareness) offered the best fit to the data; 87% of the variance in reading comprehension was explained by the two factors together. L2 Specific Knowledge was a stronger predictor of reading comprehension than metacognitive awareness. A multigroup analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling to compare poor-reader and good-reader groups. The correlation between the L2 Specific Knowledge and metacognitive awareness and their relations to reading comprehension was the same across groups. (Contains 2 figures and 4 tables.)

The permafrost in Northeast China is experiencing rapid degradation due to the influence of climate change and human activities, profoundly impacting the local ecological environment and engineering construction. Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of long-term permafrost in this region is crucial; however, systematic research on this topic remains scarce. This study combines meteorological station data, MODIS land surface temperature (LST) datasets, and borehole locations to apply the surface frost number (SFn) model. This approach enables the simulation and estimation of the spatial distribution and changes in the area of the surface frost number without vegetation effects (SFnv) and permafrost temperature (PT) in Northeast China from 1971 to 2020. The area of the SFnv > 0.49 within the permafrost region decreased substantially from approximately 44.353 × 104 km2 to 19.909 × 104 km2 between 1971 and 2020, with a notable change in 1988. The area of permafrost calculated using PT < 0 was slightly smaller, declining from 39.388 × 104 km2 to 29.852 × 104 km2. There was also a significant increase in the area with PT ranging from −1 °C to 0 °C, indicating a decline in permafrost stability. Approximately 10.926 × 104 km2 of stable permafrost has been transformed into semi-stable and unstable permafrost. Moreover, from 1982 to 2020, the NDVI was negatively correlated with the area of stable permafrost and positively correlated with the area of transitional or unstable permafrost. Vegetation cover decreased as transitional or unstable permafrost degraded. Fly ash derived from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) harbors significant quantities of heavy metals with high leaching toxicity, resulting in detrimental environmental effects. Pb2+ in fly ash is the ion most likely to exceed permissible levels. However, chemical stabilization methods demonstrate poor efficacy in stabilizing Pb2+ under acidic conditions. Herein, we have developed a robust acid-resistant chelating polymer (25DTF) for enhanced stabilization of Pb2+ in fly ash. 25DTF was synthesized through the reaction of formaldehyde with 2,5-dithiourea. 25DTF exhibited remarkable chelation efficiency, nearing 100%, for Pb2+ in fly ash. 25DTF demonstrated exceptional chelation efficiency, surpassing 99.9%, when interacting with Pb2+ in fly ash at pH ≤ 7. Even under acidic conditions, 25DTF effectively prevented the secondary dissolution of Pb2+. Additionally, it indicated outstanding Pb2+ chelation efficiency across diverse regions of China. The 25DTF chelating agent shows considerable potential in alleviating metal ion contamination in soil, wastewater, and urban environmental management, thereby fostering advancements in environmental stewardship. In order to improve the efficiency of ecological environment governance and strengthen the construction of an ecological civilization society, it is necessary to stimulate the efforts of all sectors of society, including social organizations. However, the previous literature has paid less attention to the importance of social organizations in stimulating public participation in ecological and environmental supervision. Therefore, from the perspective of "behavior demonstration" and "publicity and education," based on the data of 1041 questionnaires from various provinces in China, this paper constructs a moderated mesomeric effect model to analyze the impact of environmental protection organizations, industry associations, schools, foundations and other social organizations on the willingness of public participation in ecological environmental supervision and conducts robustness tests and heterogeneity analysis. The research finds that: (1) The "behavior demonstration" and "publicity and education" incentive activities of social organizations significantly enhance the public's willingness to participate in ecological environment supervision. (2) Environmental supervision cognition plays a part of intermediary effect in the relationship between the "behavior demonstration" and "publicity and education" incentive activities of social organizations and the public's willingness to participate in ecological environment supervision. (3) In the regulatory effect, the impact of "behavior demonstration" and "publicity and education" activities of environmental protection organizations, schools and foundations and the "behavior demonstration" activities of industry associations on the public's willingness to participate in ecological environment supervision are all regulated by environmental attitudes. The process of "publicity and education" activities of industry associations affecting the public's willingness to participate in ecological environment supervision is not regulated by environmental attitudes. (4) The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the incentive activities of social organizations in coastal areas have a stronger effect on the public's willingness to participate in ecological environment supervision than those in inland areas; the willingness of students, the government and the public in public institutions to participate in ecological environment supervision are generally higher than that of employees in enterprises and other professions; the analysis of heterogeneity in psychological preferences shows that the public with altruistic preferences is more willing to participate in ecological environment supervision under social organization incentives. Impatiens beipanjiangensis Jian Xu & H. F. Hu (Balsaminaceae), a new species of Impatiens subg. Clavicarpa discovered in Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated in this study along with its molecular phylogenetic analysis. I. beipanjiangensis is similar to I. liboensis, I. chishuiensis and I. clavigera in morphology, but I. tubulosa has the closest relationship to it. However, there are various ways in which the new species can be easily distinguished from these four species: Inferior nodes swollen rhizoid, pale green and with hooked outer sepals, longer lateral united petals, subovate auricle, deeper lower sepal and shorter spur that is reflexed towards the lower sepal. Furthermore, I. beipanjiangensis is distinguished from other Impatiens species, based on morphological, micromorphological and palynological evidence and molecular data (PP 0.967). Hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the gold standard for evaluating clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). However, reliable noninvasive methods are limited. Our study aims to investigate the diagnostic value of serum Golgi protein 73 (GP73) for CSPH in patients with compensated cirrhosis. The study enrolled 262 consecutive patients with compensated cirrhosis from three centers in China from February 2021 to September 2023, who underwent both serum GP73 tests and HVPG measurements. CSPH was defined as HVPG ≥ 10 mmHg. Diagnostic accuracy was evaluated using the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The prevalence of CSPH was 56.9% (n = 149). There were significant differences between the CSPH and non‐CSPH groups in the median serum GP73 level (126.8 vs. 73.1 ng/mL, p < 0.001). GP73 level showed a significant positive linear correlation with HVPG (r = 0.459, p < 0.001). The AUC for the diagnosis of CSPH using serum GP73 alone was 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.68–0.81). Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined that the levels of GP73, platelets and international normalized ratio were independently associated with CSPH. The combination of these three markers was termed "IP73" score with an AUC value of 0.85 (95% CI 0.80–0.89) for CSPH. Using 0 as a cut‐off value, the specificity and sensitivity of IP73 score were 77.9% and 81.9%, respectively. The IP73 score offers a novel, simple and noninvasive method of assessing CSPH in patients with compensated cirrhosis. Coal mining and ecological restoration activities significantly affect land surfaces, particularly vegetation. Long-term quantitative analyses of vegetation disturbance and restoration are crucial for effective mining management and ecological environmental supervision. In this study, using the Google Earth Engine and all available Landsat images from 1987 to 2020, we employed the Landsat-based Detection of Trends in Disturbance and Recovery (LandTrendr) algorithm and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the year, intensity, duration, and pattern of vegetation disturbance and restoration in the Heidaigou and Haerwusu open-pit coal mines (H-HOCMs) in the Jungar Coalfield of China. Our findings indicate that the overall accuracy for extractions of disturbance and restoration events in the H-HOCMs area is 83% and 84.5%, respectively, with kappa coefficients of 0.82 for both. Mining in Heidaigou has continued since its beginning in the 1990s, advancing toward the south and then eastward directions, and mining in the Haerwusu has advanced from west to east since 2010. The disturbance magnitude of the vegetation greenness in the mining area is relatively low, with a duration of about 4–5 years, and the restoration magnitude and duration vary considerably. The trajectory types show that vegetation restoration (R, 44%) occupies the largest area, followed by disturbance (D, 31%), restoration–disturbance (RD, 16%), disturbance–restoration (DR, 8%), restoration–disturbance–restoration (RDR), and no change (NC). The LandTrendr algorithm effectively detected changes in vegetation disturbance and restoration in H-HOCMs. Vegetation disturbance and restoration occurred in the study area, with a cumulative disturbance-to-restoration ratio of 61.79% since 1988. As a medicinal tree species, ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L.) and terpene trilactones (TTLs) extracted from its leaves are the main pharmacologic activity constituents and important economic indicators of its value. The accumulation of TTLs is known to be affected by environmental stress, while the regulatory mechanism of environmental response mediated by microRNAs (miRNAs) at the post-transcriptional levels remains unclear. Here, we focused on grafted ginkgo grown in northwestern, southwestern, and eastern-central China and integrally analyzed RNA-seq and small RNA-seq high-throughput sequencing data as well as metabolomics data from leaf samples of ginkgo clones grown in natural environments. The content of bilobalide was highest among detected TTLs, and there was more than a twofold variation in the accumulation of bilobalide between growth conditions. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis found significant differences in the expression of 19 TTL-related genes among ginkgo leaves from different environments. Small RNA sequencing and analysis showed that 62 of the 521 miRNAs identified were differentially expressed among different samples, especially the expression of miRN50, miR169h/i, and miR169e was susceptible to environmental changes. Further, we found that transcription factors (ERF, MYB, C3H, HD-ZIP, HSF, and NAC) and miRNAs (miR319e/f, miRN2, miRN54, miR157, miR185, and miRN188) could activate or inhibit the expression of TTL-related genes to participate in the regulation of terpene trilactones biosynthesis in ginkgo leaves by weighted gene co-regulatory network analysis. Our findings provide new insights into the understanding of the regulatory mechanism of TTL biosynthesis but also lay the foundation for ginkgo leaves' medicinal value improvement under global change. Hydrological runoff prediction is vital for water resource management. The non-linear and non-stationary runoff series and the complex hydrological features for large-scale basins make it difficult to predict. Long short-term memory (LSTM) is effective for runoff prediction but unstable for large-scale basins. This study develops three hybrid models combined with two-stage decomposition and LSTM, including wavelet transformation (WT) combined with complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), variational mode decomposition (VMD), and local mean decomposition (LMD), to predict the daily runoff of the Pearl River in China. The results indicate CEEMDAN’s broader signal decomposition applicability for runoff series preprocessing, while VMD is simpler to extract high-runoff characteristics. VMD–WT–LSTM is appropriate for predicting high and median runoff, whereas CEEMDAN–WT–LSTM is better for low-runoff and high and median runoffs with low-violent fluctuations. These hybrid models provide satisfactory predictions for NSE and R² indicators, and 97.2% of indicators fall within the acceptable range for high-runoff predictions. The hybrid models outperform traditional and standalone models in high-runoff but none of the decomposition methods in this research can identify low-runoff sub-sequence. This study provided runoff prediction methods requiring fewer data and processing time, and these methods are promising alternatives for daily runoff prediction in large-scale basins. Background: Oral health and frailty are significantly related and should be well examined, especially in late life. Few studies have explored the relationship of oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices with frailty and examined sociodemographic variations in this association. This study aimed to examine the association between oral health knowledge, attitudes, practices and frailty, with a special focus on comparing differences in their association among the Chinese community-dwelling older population. Methods: This study included 4218 community-dwelling older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) who participated in a cross-sectional survey. Sociodemographic characteristics, oral health knowledge, attitudes, practices, and frail status (non-frailty, pre-frailty, and frailty) were collected with a face-to-face questionnaire-based interview. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices with frailty. Results: Of the 4218 participants, 36.2% (n = 1527) and 18.8% (n = 792) were classified as pre-frailty and frailty. Age, gender and educational attainments differences existed in the association of oral health knowledge with frailty. Urban-rural differences in the association of oral health knowledge and practices with frailty were also found. Specifically, oral health knowledge was significantly related to frailty only among participants aged 70–79 years (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]) (1.08 [1.02–1.15]), females (1.05 [1.00–1.10]), rural residents (1.06 [1.01–1.12]), and those who were primary school and lower education (1.06 [1.01–1.11]), whereas oral health practices were related to frailty only among urban participants (0.96 [0.92–1.00]). Conclusion: This study confirmed the different associations of oral health knowledge and practices with frailty among community-dwelling older people in China. Further research is needed to better understand the abovementioned differences and public health strategies are required to improve oral health literacy and thereby contain the development of frailty in later life. Recycling plastic can abate the environmental pollution as well as CO2 emissions by saving the carbon-intensive feedstock input. The uncertain carbon price places significant effects on the establishment and operation of the whole supply chain. This study develops a green supply chain model combined with geographic information system (GIS) to account for carbon price uncertainty and evaluate its effects on the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) of plastic recycling. A two-stage stochastic programming model is constructed, in which the stochastic variable, CO2 price is modelled as a geometric Brownian motion process. Six scenarios are designed with respect to price expectation and volatility. A case study is performed with the GIS information of the plastic supply chain in Zhejiang province, China. The results illustrate that triggering the establishment of reverse logistics requires a carbon price threshold significantly beyond the current level. Lower price volatility would facilitate the decision-making of investment into the reverse logistics. Mechanisms to alleviate the market variation shall be introduced. A sound market condition is desired to obtain the optimal balance that encourages the CLSC without creating extra pressure on the firms. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is a group of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders. Evidence has implied that environmental pollutants are important factors related to ASD. In this study, several environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including parabens, benzophenone-type ultraviolet filters, hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, triclosan and tetrabromobisphenol A were analyzed in blood plasma in ASD children (n = 34) and the control children (n = 28). The results showed that parabens were the most concentrated chemicals (2.18 ng/mL, median value), followed by hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (0.73 ng/mL), benzophenone-type ultraviolet filters (0.14 ng/mL), triclosan (0.13 ng/mL) and tetrabromobisphenol A (0.03 ng/mL). ASD children accumulated significantly lower 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, 4-hydroxybenzophenone and triclosan but higher 2-hydroxyphenanthrene and tetrabromobisphenol A than the control children (0.02/0.09 ng/mL of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, p < 0.05; 0.04/0.07 ng/mL of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, p < 0.05; 0.03/0.04 ng/mL of 4-hydroxybenzophenone, p < 0.05; 0.13/1.22 ng/mL of triclosan, p < 0.01; 0.03 ng/mL/not detected of 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, p < 0.05; 0.03/0.004 ng/mL of tetrabromobisphenol A, p < 0.05). Gender differences in certain environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals were evident, and the differences were more inclined toward boys. Positive associations between 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone and triclosan, and tetrabromobisphenol A and 2-hydroxyphenanthrene were found in ASD boys. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the adjusted odds ratio value of 2-hydroxyphenanthrene in ASD boys was 11.0 (1.45–84.0, p < 0.05). Willows, in the genus Salix, are widespread on the earth with significant ecological and economic values for humans. Although about 500 Salix species have been estimated, the genomic foundation of their adaptations to environments with diverse stresses has been underexplored. Here, we applied a pan-transcriptome approach to investigate the phylogenetic relationships and genetic variations among 16 willow species. A pan-transcriptome of 29,668 gene families was assembled, 69% of which exhibited presence/absence variation across the analyzed species. In comparison to core genes present in all species, shell gene families absent in at least one species were enriched with genes in pathways of signaling transduction and response to stimuli, suggesting their functions in the interaction with diverse environmental factors. A phylogenetic tree of 16 willow species was constructed with high confidence based on 870 single-copy orthologous genes, providing detailed evolutionary relationships of willow sections. The willow species were further assigned into four species clusters using the gene numbers in each family. The diversity of gene family size and gene expression levels among the willow species are closely associated with their geographical distributions. The gene family members involved in DNA repair and cellular response to DNA damage stimuli were expanded in willow species from high-altitude regions in southwestern China, which may contribute to their tolerance to ultraviolet radiation stress. Our study generates a comprehensive pan-transcriptome resource for a large set of Salix species and provides insights into the adaptations of willows to diverse environments, which will be valuable for comparative analysis with other related woody and herbaceous plants. The complementary relationship (CR) between actual and potential evaporation has undergone rapid development over the past decades. Commonly, the evaluation of CR models does not comprehensively cover spatial and temporal aspects of model performance; thus, the spatial and temporal accuracy and parameter sensitivity of different CR models remain relatively unknown, especially in ungauged basins. We examine the spatial and temporal performance and parameter sensitivity of four CR models with fixed parameters at the monthly scale over the source region of the Yellow River in China. Additionally, two CR models with distributed parameters were selected as comparisons. Because of the lack of evaporation spatiotemporal "true" values, the corrected water‐balance‐derived evaporation was used as the temporal reference, and the ensemble mean of multiple evaporation products was used as the spatial reference. We find that trade‐offs between the spatial and temporal accuracy of CR models with fixed parameters for basin evaporation should be considered in the application. Although four CR models with fixed parameters exhibited different spatial and temporal performances, their overall performance was generally similar. The parameters of CR models had consistent spatial and temporal sensitivities, and the sensitivity of parameter αe was stronger than that of other parameters. This study demonstrates that CR models with distributed parameters have a promising future in estimating basin or regional evaporation. An integrated spatial and temporal evaluation framework can better distinguish the performance of CR models. The methodologies can be used as a guideline for evaluating and calibrating CR models that match an application's needs. A heavy rainfall event in south China was simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with three microphysics schemes, including the Morrison scheme, Thompson scheme, and Milbrandt and Yau scheme (MY), which aim to evaluate the capability to reproduce the precipitation and radar echo reflectivity features, and to evaluate evaluate their differences in microphysics and the associated thermodynamical and dynamical feedback. Results show that all simulations reproduce the main features crucial for rainfall formation. Compared with the observation, the MY scheme performed better than the other two schemes in terms of intensity and spatial distribution of rainfall. Due to abundant water vapor, the accretion of cloud droplets by raindrops was the dominant process in the growth of raindrops while the contribution of melting was a secondary effect. Riming processes, in which frozen hydrometeors collect cloud droplets mainly, contributed more to the growth of frozen hydrometeors than the Bergeron process. Extremely abundant snow and ice were produced in the Thompson and MY schemes respectively by a deposition process. The MY scheme has the highest condensation and evaporation, but the lowest deposition. As a result, in the MY scheme, the enhanced vertical gradient of condensation heating and evaporation cooling at low levels produces strong positive and weak negative potential vorticity in Guangdong, and may favor the formation of the enhanced rainfall center over there. As the climate warms, the impact of drought on plants has increased. We aimed to construct a comprehensive drought index (CDI), coupling soil-vegetation-atmosphere drought and heat conditions based on multi-source information, and to combine it with static and dynamic drought hazard evaluation models to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of agricultural drought disasters and hazards during the growing season (May to September) in Northeast China (NEC). The results demonstrated that the CDI could combine the benefits of meteorology (standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index, SPEI), vegetation (vegetation health index, VHI), and soil (standardized soil moisture condition index, SMCI) indices. This was performed using a relative weighting method based on the remote sensing data of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to determine the weights of SPEI, VHI, and SMCI. The CDI for drought monitoring has the advantages of broad spatial range, long time range, and high accuracy, and can effectively reflect agricultural drought; the growing season in NEC showed a trend of becoming drier during 1982–2020. However, the trends of the drought index, the impact range of drought events, and the hazard of agricultural drought all turned around 2000. The drought hazard was highly significant (p < 0.001) and decreased from 2000 to 2020. The frequency of drought disasters was the highest, and the hazard was the greatest in May. The best level of climatic yield anomalies in maize were explained by drought hazard in August (R2 = 0.28). In the center and western portions of the study area, farmland and grassland areas were where higher levels of hazard were most commonly seen. The dynamic hazard index is significantly correlated with climatic yield anomalies and can reflect the actual impact of drought on crop yield. The study results serve as a scientific foundation for drought risk assessment and management, agricultural planning, and the formulation of drought adaptation policies, as well as for ensuring food security in China. Agricultural drought is a major problem facing China's agricultural production. In this study, the cash crop 'peanut' was used as an example to explore vulnerability. Through the atmosphere–plant–soil continuum system, a single index that could represent different types of droughts affecting peanuts was selected and weighted using the CRITIC weighting method to construct a multi-source data fusion drought index (MFDI). Then, Pearson correlation analysis between the comprehensive drought index and relative meteorological yield and the Mann–Kendall trend test for different growth periods of peanuts were used to verify MFDI and analyze the variation over time. A three-dimensional vulnerability assessment method of drought intensity–drought duration–yield reduction rate was established based on the run theory and trend surface analysis. The results show that the constructed multi-source data fusion drought index (MFDI) can more accurately characterize the actual drought conditions of peanuts in Shandong Province. The MFDI results showed that the drought severity in the coastal areas of the study area decreased with the growth and development of peanuts, while the drought became more severe in the western and northern parts during the late growth period of peanuts. The vulnerability surface of the drought intensity–drought duration–yield reduction rate showed that when the drought intensity was < 0.8 and the duration was < 3.5 months, the vulnerability of peanut crops was low, and then with the increase in drought intensity or duration, the vulnerability increased. The impact of drought duration cannot be ignored. In contrast to traditional vulnerability assessment methods, this study established a three-dimensional vulnerability surface, which provides a new approach for agricultural drought vulnerability assessment. In parts of North China Plain, there are several aquifers in the thick alluvium over the coal seam, which overlays a large amount of coal resources. Roof water inrush accident occurred during coal mining often caused by multiple reasons. Based on the case of roof water inrush in Zhaogu Mining Area, by hydrologic supplementary exploration of the north flank, the stratum data were obtained; combined with previous geological drilling data of the mine, the structural characteristics of five main aquifers and five main aquicludes in the alluvium of the north flank were classified. By pumping test of the No. 1 and the No. 2 supplementary exploration drill holes, the water richness of the 5th aquifer of north flank is identified as medium level. Three thin layers of gravel aquifer beneath the 5th aquifer were found in No. 1 drill hole, and the water richness of the lowest thin gravel (2.95 m thickness) was identified as medium by the followed pumping test, which reveals an important factor leading to the insufficient size of the safety pillar. The leakage self-closed aperture test on the sand soil of the 5th aquiclude clarifies that in case of fracture connection, it cannot resist water and sand crushing under high water pressure of the 5th aquifer. Based on the mechanism of high-pressure water on the working face supports, the calculation method of support resistance under high water pressure alluvial layer is put forward, and the main reason of roof support failure and water inrush is the insufficient support resistance, which leads to abnormal height caving. Mycena subpiligera, a new taxon in sect. Fragilipedes that can strongly enhance the germination efficiency of Gastrodia elata seeds, was discovered in subtropical areas of China. As revealed by a morphological comparison with related Mycena species as well as maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA, the new taxon can be distinguished from phenotypically similar and phylogenetically related species. Optimal cultural conditions for M. subpiligera basidiomata are reported, and the germination rate of the new species is compared with that of M. citrinomarginata. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Streamflow in semiarid areas, especially in North China, was rapidly decreasing, which made it important to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of streamflow. Using the hydro-meteorological data series of 1961–2017 in the upper Yongding River Basin (UYRB) (including the Yang River Basin (YRB) and Sanggan River Basin (SRB)), spatio-temporal variation characteristics of air temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration (E0) were analyzed. The results showed that precipitation has no significant trend; the temperature showed a significant increase of 0.1–0.5 °C per decade; E0 showed a significant decrease of approximately −2 mm/10yr (in 18 stations); the estimated rates of streamflow change were −7 and −8 mm/10yr for SRB and YRB. As for spatial distribution, the YRB presented a higher E0 value than the SRB; the mountain areas had more precipitation than the plain areas. The change points of streamflow occurred in 1982 and 2003. Both the Budyko and the DMC methods were used to evaluate the impacts of climate change and human activities on the mean annual streamflow. In variation stage I (1983~2003), impacts of human activities account for 90.6% and 62.7% of the mean annual streamflow changes in YRB and SRB, respectively. In variation stage II (2004~2017), the percentages were 99.5% and 93.5%, respectively. It is also noted that the first change point in streamflow was indeed at the beginning of China's land reform, when the farmers could manage their reallocated lands and, therefore, there was an increase in agricultural water consumption. The second change point coincided with "Capital Water Resources Planning", including water conservation projects and irrigation district construction programs. In general, human activities were mainly responsible for the significant decline in the annual streamflow of UYRB. This paper will provide valuable results for water resources planning and give guidance on the construction of water conservation function areas and ecological environment support areas in the capital. The spatiotemporal changes in surface water area (SWA) in the basins of Northeast China have far-reaching impacts on their economic, agricultural, and social development and ecological sustainability. However, the long-term variation characteristics of water bodies in the Northeast basin and its main driving factors are still unclear. Based on the global surface water dataset, combined with the Meteorological and Vegetation Normalized Index (NDVI) datasets, this study used linear regression and correlation analysis to investigate the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of surface water in Northeast China and its driving factors from 1988 to 2020. The results show that (1) the seasonal surface water area (SSWA) and permanent surface water area (PSWA) in Northeast China increased at the rates of 58.408 km2/ year and 169.897 km2/ year, respectively, from 1988 to 2020. Taking 2000 as the node, PSWA and SSWA showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. (2) Changes in surface water types in each basin have significant space–time differences, and the transition between water bodies is dominated by the addition and reduction of seasonal water bodies. PSWA decreased significantly in western basins such as the Ulagai River Basin, the Otindag Desert, and the Liao River Basin, but increased significantly in the Songhua River Basin. (3) The driving forces of surface water change in different basins are different. Temperature and NDVI play a leading role in the change of SWA in the western arid region; permafrost degradation under the condition of air temperature rise is an indispensable factor affecting SWA change in the Argun River Basin; the eastern basin with a larger surface water area responded more strongly to changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration. Land-use conversion and water conservancy project construction were the main reasons for the increase of SWA in the Songhua River Basin under reduced precipitation. This research provides a reference for the in-depth study of the characteristics of surface water resources in Northeast China and has important practical significance for the scientific management of water resources in the basin. Objective: A series of physiological changes in thyroid function occur during pregnancy and differ from those non-pregnant women. This study aimed to establish the pregnancy-specific reference intervals of TSH and FT4 using an indirect method based on the healthy pregnant women from southwest China population. Methods: Thyroid function test results which available on the Laboratory Information System (LIS) were collected from the pregnancies who visited the Obstetric Clinic or the Department of Gynecology between 1 January 2015, and 30 December 2020. We grouped the data by trimesters to establish the reference intervals (RIs) based on the clinical consensus of different levels of TSH and FT4 at different weeks of gestation. All arrangements were referenced to the document CLSI EP28-A3C. Results: A total of 33,040 thyroid function test results of pregnant women, aged 31 (28,33) years were statistical analyzed. Estimated RIs for TSH and FT4 in the first, second and third trimesters corresponding to the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles in TPOAb negative were 0.02–5.23, 0.03–5.24, 0.37–5.68 mIU/L, 11.66–20.69, 10.1–18.59, 9.85–16.86pmol/L, respectively. Conclusion: This study provides trimester-specific RIs for TSH and FT4 among healthy pregnant women in southwest China which guides clinicians to diagnosis and screen for thyroid disorders in this region. Under the influence of climate change and human activities, the southern boundary of the permafrost region in Northeast China, which is located at the southern edge of the permafrost area of Eurasia, has moved north, the surface temperature has increased, and the thickness of the frozen layer has decreased. At present, there is a lack of classification standards or a map of the thermal state of permafrost that can reflect the dynamic change characteristics of permafrost in Northeast China. A vegetation impact factor consisting of normalized difference vegetation index and forest canopy closure was introduced into MODIS LST products, in order to improve the applicability of products in Northeast China. Based on the improved MODIS LST data, this study analyzed the distribution and change of the mean annual surface temperature and the surface frost number (SFnc) from 2003 to 2019. SFnc was used as the standard to classify the thermal state of permafrost, and a map of the thermal state distribution and changes of permafrost in Northeast China, with a spatial resolution of 1 km, was produced. Compared with the observation data of meteorological stations and field monitoring data, the reliability of classification results was nearly 95%. The map showed that there was no area of extremely stable permafrost (SFnc ≥ 0.667), the area of stable permafrost (0.55 ≤ SFnc< 0.667) changed from 14.9 × 104 km2 to 6.5 × 104 km2, the SFnc reduced from 0.564 to 0.557, the area of semi-stable permafrost (0.51 < SFnc < 0.55) changed from 17.68 × 104 km2 to 17.77 × 104 km2, the SFNc reduced from 0.529 to 0.528, and the area of transitional or unstable permafrost (0.49 ≤ SFnc ≤ 0.51) changed from 8.67 × 104 km2 to 9.56 × 104 km2. The thermal state of permafrost decreased and the distribution of stable permafrost shrank, due to continuous rising air temperature. The overall change characteristics of the thermal state distribution of permafrost were that the southern boundary of the permafrost region moved northward, the regional permafrost thermal state decreased, and there was an increased region of semi-stable, transitional or unstable permafrost from the frozen soil thawed at the edge of the permafrost region with higher stability. The permafrost region in Northeast China has lush vegetation, and the continuous degradation of permafrost will change the vegetation growth environment and affect the global carbon cycle process. This work will provide important data support for climate change feedback, natural disaster process research, and an early warning and prevention of terrestrial ecosystem response in the permafrost region of Eurasia. The highly skewed nature of research influence has been widely acknowledged. Among extant studies examining contributing factors, most focus on the hard sciences in developed economies with very few examining the social sciences in emerging powers. The impact of citation scope is likewise left largely underexplored. In this paper, we develop two novel measures of citation scope using geography and research field as metrics and explore their role in boosting academic impact. Our results support geography as a citation scope serving an important pathway through which international collaboration affects academic impact. Such effect increases in prominence in later years. The Beihong agate from the southern section of the Xing'an Mountains in northeastern China is a kind of cryptocrystalline agate with a yellow to orange-red colour. However, it has been less studied in previous research, and there is a lack of quantitative study on the cause of its colour. In this study, the colour of Beihong agate was quantified by a colourimeter, and the quantitative relationships between colour and spectral characteristics of Beihong agate were studied by XRF, Raman spectra, UV-VIS spectra, and a heat treatment experiment. The results show a high correlation between the lightness and the hue angle of the Beihong agate. The change of total Fe content can significantly affect the lightness and the hue of the Beihong agate. The first derivative curve can effectively distinguish the relative contents of goethite and hematite in the Beihong agate, and the position of a primary trough is related significantly to the colour of the Beihong agate. As an essential transportation infrastructure, high-speed rail (HSR) plays an important role in improving connections and economic efficiency among cities which has been proved by numerous studies. In turn, the cities' economic development levels also influence the planning and construction of HSR. Several qualitative studies pointed out that some failed projects of HSR investment were attributed by the neglect of urban economic factors. However, there lacks a quantitative understanding of which specific city economic factors influence the formation of HSR networks and to what extent. This study intends to answer the questions by analyzing the formation process of HSR network under the influence of city economic development using a generative network model (GNM) and social network analysis. It focused on 20 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region of China and constructed a City-HSR network that coupled the city economic network and HSR network. Then, a GNM method considering transitivity, distance, boundary effect, and population, was used to generate simulated networks similar to the City-HSR network. The similarities in network metrics between the City-HSR network and the GNM networks were compared by the quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) method to determine the optimal GNM network. A sensitivity analysis was further conducted to investigate the impacts of the factors on the formation of HSR network. The results showed that GNM could simulate the observed City-HSR network with satisfactory performance, and the city population should be given priority when planning new HSR lines. The occurrence and distribution of six phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in surface water and sediment of the Pearl River were investigated, including Xijiang River (XR), Beijiang River (BR), Lingdingyang Estuary (LE), and Guangzhou River (GR) in South China. Six target PAEs were identified in surface water and sediment at almost all sites in the Pearl River, with di(2-ethyl-ethyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as dominant PAEs. Total 6 PAEs (ΣPAEs) in surface water and sediment ranged from 1,797.5 to 4,968.5 ng L−1 and 95.24 to 3,677.26 ng g−1 dw, respectively. In addition, the contamination levels of PAEs in the Pearl River are in the following order: XR > BR > GR > LE for surface water and BR > XR > GR for sediment. Local agricultural activities, industrial production, water confluence, and seawater intrusion are the probable sources of PAEs in the Pearl River. Based on correlation analysis, the possible collocation patterns of different PAEs were revealed. The risk assessment indicates that residual PAEs in the Pearl River pose a serious threat to the ecological environment. Objective: To summarize Professor Xie's clinical experience in treating the deficiency cold of spleen and stomach type of complex peptic ulcer. Methods: through the observation of the curative effect of the patients with the deficiency cold of spleen and stomach type of complex peptic ulcer in the outpatient department of liver, spleen and stomach department of our hospital, the dialectical application and clinical experience of Professor Xie Jingri's self-made prescription in clinical practice were summarized. Results: Professor Xie Jingri's self-made prescription can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of patients with the deficiency cold of spleen and stomach type of complex peptic ulcer, and through individual syndrome differentiation and treatment, make the self-made prescription vary from person to person, clinical addition and subtraction, so as to further improve the clinical efficacy of patients. Conclusion: Professor Xie Jingri's self-made prescription is effective in treating complex peptic ulcer of spleen stomach deficiency cold type, which is worthy of further clinical application and promotion. Background: Appropriate reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets are essential for immune status evaluation of patients with immunological diseases. We aim to establish the age- and sex-related reference intervals of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform for the southwest China population using the indirect method with the data resulting from 53,822 cases of periodic health examination individuals in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) of West China Hospital from 2018 to 2020. Methods: We used the Box-Cox conversion combined with the Tukey method to normalize the data and eliminate the outliers, and the nonparametric method to estimate the 95% distribution reference intervals. Results: We initially established the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform among healthy population in southwest China by indirect method (See text for details). Using the standard normal deviate test (z-test) suggested by Harris and Boyd according to CLSI EP28-A3C, which is more scientific, we found the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets should be differentiated by ages and genders since the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform in different ages and genders are significantly different. Conclusions: We further demonstrated the absolute count of CD3 + T cell, CD3 + CD4 + T cell, CD3 + CD8 + T cell decreased with aging, which is more marked in men and CD3 + CD8 + T cell count, and the obtained reference intervals were superior to the reference intervals derived from the reagent specification currently in use. Achieving accurate chronostratigraphical correlation between late Cambrian sections in North China and sections from elsewhere in the world has been a long‐standing problem, largely owing to a lack of preserved or identified biostratigraphical marker fauna. Here, we examine trilobite occurrences, the sequence of facies and lithological change, and carbon and oxygen isotopes from the carbonate sequence of the Jiulongshan section, Shandong Province. Whereas regionally comparable sections are commonly unconformable coincident with the Kushan–Chaumitien formation boundary, we report the Steptoean Positive Isotopic Carbon Excursion (SPICE) event from an uninterrupted section recording a regressive–transgressive palaeoenvironmental fluctuation. Further, we place the onset and rise of the SPICE event within a high‐resolution, trilobite biostratigraphical framework, reporting, for the first time, Fenghuangella laevis from Shandong Province. Although correlating trilobite biostratigraphical relationships from China to the rest of the world has long been burdened by the endemism of Chinese taxa, the base of the Fenghuangella biozone corresponds with the base of the globally recognized Glyptagnostus reticulatus biozone, thus better demarcating the base of the Paibian Stage in North China. Pharmaceuticals, such as over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, may be an important source of human exposure to several endocrine disruptors, though unnoticed to date. In the present study, we investigated the presence of six parabens and nine bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues in OTC medicines manufactured in China. Parabens and bisphenols were present in more than 90% of the samples. The total measured concentrations of parabens and bisphenols were in the range of non-detectable (ND) to 213 ng/g and ND to 415 ng/g, respectively. Regarding parabens, methyl paraben (MeP) was the predominant analog, accounting for 43 ± 36% of the total amount, followed by ethyl paraben (EtP) (39 ± 35%), and others (< 10%). Bisphenol F and BPA were the predominant bisphenols, accounting for 24 ± 28% and 22 ± 26% of the total amount, respectively. The median values of estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of parabens and bisphenols were the highest for infants (2.96 and 3.14 ng/kg_bw/day, respectively) and the lowest for adults (0.69 and 0.25 ng/kg_bw/day, respectively); moreover, the EDIs of parabens and bisphenols were higher in Chinese patent medicines than in western pediatric medicines. The hazard quotient (HQ) for sum of MeP and EtP (∑(MeP + EtP)) and BPA in three age groups were within the safe zone (HQ < 0.0004). Monte Carlo simulation was applied to predict the human exposure risk of parabens and bisphenols. The predicted ranges of EDIs of parabens and bisphenols were much wider, and the extreme predicted values were observed in all four age groups, which were higher than the acceptable daily intake. The extreme predicted values of ∑(MeP + EtP) and BPA were indicative of carcinogenic risk in toddlers. These results implied potential risks for the Chinese people existed. Considering the huge export of Chinese traditional medicines and western medicines worldwide, and easy access to OTC medicines for the general population, the presence of parabens, bisphenols, and other environmental contaminants in medicines still need to be monitored. Financial bubbles have always been a topic of long-term concern for economists. Understanding bubble phenomenon and dating the period of bubbles in real time can provide an early warning diagnosis for financial bubbles and help regulatory authorities to control it and maintain market order. The generalized sup ADF (GSADF) and backward sup ADF (BSADF) tests with flexible window width can effectively detect and date periodically collapsing bubbles in real time. Based on the financial present value model, this paper applies right-tail recursive ADF test to test multiple bubbles in China's multi-level stock market. Unlike the other researches in China, the ratios of the real stock prices' natural logarithm to the real dividends' natural logarithm are used for our testing instead of stock price index. Empirical results show that there are 8 bubbles in the Main-Board Market, 6 bubbles in the Small and Medium Enterprises Board (SMEs), and 4 bubbles in the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM). These bubbles are liquidity-driven and presuppose a loose credit cycle, with the exception of bubbles in 2014–2015. The frequent emergence of bubbles in a short time indicates that China's stock market is still emerging market. In addition, frequent fluctuations imply there is a serious "herd effect" and a lack of monitoring mechanism for bubble risk. This study not only enrich the real-time dynamic research on periodical bubbles of China's stock market, but also provide an empirical reference for investors' investment choices, financial decisions of listed companies and warning mechanism of regulatory authorities. The chemical substances in urban rivers influence municipal water systems and reflect the recent use of these chemicals by humans or industries around the urban center. In this study, seven perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs)—perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), 2-perfluorohexyl ethanol (6:2 FTOH), 2-perfluorooctyl ethanol (8:2 FTOH), and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids (F-53B)—could be detected and quantified in river water and sediment samples collected from one tributary of the Liuxi River, which is part of Pearl River near Guangzhou in Guangdong province, South China. The fluxes of target PFASs into Liuxi River and their related ecological risks were further estimated. The total concentrations of PFASs (ΣPFASs) ranged from 506 to 3.16 × 103 ng/L in water samples and 9.13 to 850 ng/L in sediment samples. The two dominant PFAS compounds were 6:2 FTOH and PFHpA, which accounted for more than 90.0% of ΣPFASs in river water and sediment. Correlation analysis showed that there was significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) between two selected PFASs (e.g., between 6:2 FTOH and PFHpA). Correlation analysis of PFASs in river water and sediment indicated most PFASs in sediment were partitioned from river water. Background: We aimed to assess the efficacy of different initial intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) regimens in Kawasaki disease (KD) patients to find more cost‐effective therapy options. Methods: A multicenter, open‐label, blind‐endpoint randomized controlled trial was conducted from January 2014 to December 2015. Patients with KD, within 10 days of illness, were randomly assigned to receive different IVIG regimens (Group A, 2 g/kg once; Group B, 1 g/kg for 2 consecutive days; Group C, 1 g/kg once) and aspirin 30mg/kg/d. Primary outcomes included hours to defervescence and development of coronary artery lesions during the study period. Major secondary outcomes included total fever days, total dose of IVIG, changes of laboratory data, length of stay, and hospitalization expenses. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02439996). No difference was found in the outcomes of defervescence among three groups at 6, 12, 24, and 36 hours after completion of initial IVIG infusion. There were no differences in the incidence of coronary artery lesions during the study period (at week 2, month 1, month 3, and month 6 of illness), changes of laboratory data, total fever days, and length of stay. Group C patients had the lowest total dose of IVIG (mean: 1.2 vs 2.2 vs 2.1 g/kg; P < 0.001) and hospitalization expenses (mean: 8443.8 vs 10798.4 vs 11011.4 Chinese Yuan; P < 0.001) than other two groups. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have potential carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity. Research has been conducted on PFAS exposure in people to discuss their potential health effects, excluding lung cancer. In this study, we recruited participants (n = 282) with lung cancer from Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. The PFAS concentrations were measured in their serum to fill the data gap of exposure, and relationships were explored in levels between PFASs and clinical indicators of tumor, immune and liver function. Ten PFASs were found in over 80 % of samples and their total concentrations were 5.27–152 ng/mL, with the highest level for perfluorooctanesulfonate (median: 12.4 ng/mL). Long-chain PFASs were the main congeners and their median concentration (20.5 ng/mL) was nearly three times to that of short-chain PFASs (7.61 ng/mL). Significantly higher concentrations of perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid and perfluorohexanesulfonate were found in males than in females (p < 0.05). Serum levels of neuro-specific enolase were positively associated with perfluoropentanoic acid in all participants and were negatively associated with perfluorononanesulfonate in females (p < 0.05, multiple linear regression models). Exposure to PFAS mixture was significantly positively associated with the lymphocytic absolute value (difference: 0.224, 95% CI: 0.018, 0.470; p < 0.05, quantile g-computation models) and serum total bilirubin (difference: 2.177, 95% CI: 0.0335, 4.33; p < 0.05). Moreover, PFAS exposure can affect γ-glutamyl transpeptidase through several immune markers (p < 0.05, mediating test). Our results suggest that exposure to certain PFASs could interfere with clinical indicators in lung cancer patients. In today's fiercely competitive global market, developing new technologies is becoming ever more important for firm to stay competitive. Internationalised R&D is especially attractive to firms in developing countries who tend to lack exposure to advanced technologies. A series of studies found that firms who undertake internationalised R&D are more profitable, and some claimed that, overall, it increases patent output. Yet rarely have we studied how the different aspects of internationalised R&D influence technological innovation output. Fewer studies still have paid attention to internationalised R&D in China as the world's largest developing economy and a significant international competitor. Therefore, we conducted a study on the relationship between key components of internationalised R&D and technological innovation output in listed Chinese multinationals. From a literature review and cross-case analysis of four Chinese tech giants, we established network construction and knowledge acquisition as key processes in internationalised R&D, and technological and geographic diversity as key characteristics. We then defined a regression model and metrics and analysed a sample of 40 listed Chinese firms to determine how those characteristics relate and interrelate to the number of international patents held by each firm. Phytolith‐occluded carbon (PhytOC) is an important long‐term stable carbon fraction in grassland ecosystems and plays a promising role in global carbon sequestration. Determination of the PhytOC traits of different plants in major grassland types is crucial for precisely assessing their phytolith carbon sequestration potential. Precipitation is the predominant factor in controlling net primary productivity (NPP) and species composition of the semiarid steppe grasslands. We selected three representative steppe communities of the desert steppe, the dry typical steppe, and the wet typical steppe in Northern Grasslands of China along a precipitation gradient, to investigate their species composition, biomass production, and PhytOC content for quantifying its long‐term carbon sequestration potential. Our results showed that (a) the phytolith and PhytOC contents in plants differed significantly among species, with dominant grass and sedge species having relatively high contents, and the contents are significantly higher in the below‐ than the aboveground parts. (b) The phytolith contents of plant communities were 16.68, 17.94, and 15.85 g/kg in the above‐ and 86.44, 58.73, and 76.94 g/kg in the belowground biomass of the desert steppe, the dry typical steppe, and the wet typical steppe, respectively; and the PhytOC contents were 0.68, 0.48, and 0.59 g/kg in the above‐ and 1.11, 0.72, and 1.02 g/kg in the belowground biomass of the three steppe types. (c) Climatic factors affected phytolith and PhytOC production fluxes of steppe communities mainly through altering plant production, whereas their effects on phytolith and PhytOC contents were relatively small. Our study provides more evidence on the importance of incorporating belowground PhytOC production for estimating phytolith carbon sequestration potential and suggests it crucial to quantify belowground PhytOC production taking into account of plant perenniality and PhytOC deposition over multiple years. Cold injury refers to local or systemic injury caused by a rapid, massive loss of body heat in a cold environment. The incidence of cold injury is high. However, the current situation regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cold injury in our country is not ideal. To standardize and improve the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment of cold injury in China, it is necessary to make a consensus that is practical and adapted to the conditions in China. We used the latest population-level epidemiological and clinical research data, combined with relevant literature from China and foreign countries. The consensus was developed by a joint committee of multidisciplinary experts. We performed a regional geological survey in discontinuous permafrost (PF) area along the Bei'an to Heihe Expressway between September 2009 and October 2016 to investigate the state and change of PF in northeast China. Underground resistivity changes were periodically detected along the foot of the subgrade and soil temperatures were monitored under the road foundation. We combined local meteorological and average annual air temperature data to analyze changes in PF thickness. The climate data show that the average annual temperature has gradually increased in the study area since 1980, rising to 0 °C around 1990, and the frost number has decreased to less than 0.5 since 1988. The soil temperature results show that the PF temperature in this section is higher than − 1 °C and is in a high-temperature PF zone affected by changes in seasonal air temperature. The PF under the left foot of the subgrade (LPF) and under the road central separation zone of the road (CPF) both show a decreased PF table, increased PF base, and severe PF degradation. Owing to different cover thicknesses, as well as differences in heat transfer between frozen and unfrozen soil, the base of LPF degraded faster than its table, to CPF the opposite is true. Underground resistivity measurements to verify the accuracy of the PF degradation results. The ground temperature monitoring data and climate data show good consistency. The accurate estimation of fracture geometry parameters and the characterization of rock mass structure are two important topics in the geological disposal system of high‐level radioactive waste (HLW). The Beishan area, as the current preselected area for China's HLW disposal, has three subareas considered to be the key survey area at the stage of site selection. In this paper, a comprehensive survey method conducted on the outcrop is developed to estimate fracture geometry parameters. Results show that fracture occurrence obeys a Fisher distribution, fracture trace length obeys a normal distribution, and the distribution of spacing obeys a negative exponential distribution. An evaluation index, Rock Mass Structure Rating (RMSR), is proposed to characterize rock mass structure for the three subareas. The results show that the Xinchang area is more suitable to act as China's HLW disposal repository site. At the same time, the index can also be applied to characterize surface rock mass structure and rock mass integrity at the site selection phase of HLW disposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the prevalence and determinants of folic acid (FA) supplementation in Chinese couples planning for pregnancy and in women during early pregnancy. This was a cross-sectional study based on the Shanghai PreConception Cohort (SPCC) study. Data on FA supplementation and socio-demographic features were collected using questionnaires. Couples visiting clinics for pre-pregnancy examination and pregnant women at < 14 gestational weeks were recruited in Shanghai, China, between March 2016 and September 2018. Among the pregnancy planners, 42.4% (4,710/11,099) women and 17.1% (1,377/8,045) men used FA supplements, while 93.4% (14,585/15,615) of the pregnant women used FA supplements. FA supplement use was higher in female pregnancy planners who were older (RR : 1.13, 95% CI : 1.08–1.18), had higher education (RR : 1.71, 95% CI : 1.53–1.92), and were residing in urban districts (RR : 1.06, 95% CI : 1.01–1.11) of FA supplementation; female pregnancy planners with alcohol consumption (RR : 0.95, 95% CI : 0.90–0.99) had lower odds of FA supplementation. In early pregnancy, women with higher educational level (RR : 1.04, 95% CI : 1.03–1.06), who underwent pre-pregnancy examination (RR : 1.02, 95% CI : 1.01–1.03) had higher odds of using an FA supplement; older aged (RR : 0.99, 95% CI : 0.98–0.99), and multigravida (RR : 0.97, 95% CI : 0.96–0.98) had lower odds of FA supplementation. Although the majority of pregnant women took FA supplements, more than half of the women planning for pregnancy did not. Urgent strategies are needed to improve pre-conception FA supplementation. Endophytic bacteria, which are common in plant tissues, may help to control plant pathogens and enhance plant growth. Camellia oleifera, an oil-producing plant, is widely grown in warm, subtropical, hilly regions in China. However, C. oleifera is strongly negatively affected by C. oleifera anthracnose, which is caused by Colletetrichum fructicola. To find a suitable biocontrol agent for C. oleifera anthracnose, 41 endophytes were isolated from the stems, leaves, and roots of C. oleifera. Bacterial cultures were identified based on analyses of 16S rDNA sequences; most strains belonged to the genus Bacillus. The antagonistic effects of these strains on C. fructicola were tested in vitro. In total, 16 strains inhibited C. fructicola growth, with B. subtilis strain 1-L-29 being the most efficient. Strain 1-L-29 demonstrated antagonistic activity against C. siamense, C. asianum, Fusarium proliferatum, Agaricodochium camellia, and Pseudomonas syringae. In addition, this strain produced indole acetic acid, solubilized phosphate, grew on N-free media, and produced siderophores. To facilitate further microecological studies of this strain, a rifampicin-resistant, green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled strain, 1-L-29gfpr, was created using protoplast transformation. This plasmid had good segregational stability. Strain 1-L-29gfpr was re-introduced into C. oleifera and successfully colonized root, stem, and leaf tissues. This strain remained at a stable concentration in the root more than 20 d after inoculation. Fluorescence microscopic analysis showed that strain 1-L-29gfpr thoroughly colonized the root surfaces of C. fructicola as well as the root vascular tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana. Summary: Protein quality and antioxidant properties of soymilk derived from black soybean (eight varieties) in China were analysed following in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion (including dialysis). Soymilk from black soybean possessed high okara weight but low yield, protein content and sensory scores. The in vitro digestibility of protein in all black soymilk samples was higher than 60%, and the Shenmu black soybean exhibited the highest digestibility. Non‐digested milk from the black soybean exhibited significantly high total phenolic content (TPC) (127.15–173.04 mg/100 mL), ferric‐reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (272.18–366.27 μmol L−1) and DPPH free radical‐scavenging activity (61.20–83.81%). These parameters were significantly lower in the non‐digested soymilk than those in soymilk after gastric digestion but higher than those of soymilk in the dialysed fraction. Gastric digestion significantly increased bioactive compound levels released from black soymilk, and the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds was 24.37–36.05%. Microbiota from herbivore rumen is of great interest for mining glycoside hydrolases for lignocellulosic biomass biorefinement. We previously isolated a highly active but poorly thermostable xylanase (LXY) from a rumen fluid fosmid library of Hu sheep, a local high-reproductive species in China. In this study, we used a universal enzyme-engineering strategy called SpyTag/SpyCatcher molecular cyclization to improve LXY stability via isopeptide-bond-mediated ligation. Both linear and cyclized LXY (L- and C-LXY, respectively) shared similar patterns of optimal pH and temperature, pH stability, and kinetic constants (km and Vmax). However, the C-LXY showed enhanced thermostability, ion stability, and resilience to aggregation and freeze–thaw treatment than L-LXY, without compromise of its catalytic efficiency. Circular dichroism and intrinsic and 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid-binding fluorescence analysis indicated that the cyclized enzyme was more capable of maintaining its secondary and tertiary structures than the linear enzyme. Rapid developments in environmental infrastructure have contributed to significant improvements in green total factor productivity, but further investigation is required to provide a detailed assessment to understand the policy mechanisms involved. This paper analyzes environmental progress in China through MMQR, CCEMG, and AMG as empirical strategies for 30 provinces in China. Our empirical results reveal that energy optimization through renewable energy is the most effective channel to improve green total factor productivity, though it is not the only available option. Since environmental regulations, infrastructure development, and green technology innovation also directly impact energy efficiency, adopting these within policy channels will positively impact environmental sustainability. Our empirical approach helps suggest novel environmental policy suggestions. In particular, policymakers must introduce structural changes within energy developments to foster renewable energy. Furthermore, China must increase environmental spending to upgrade its energy infrastructure further and solve ecological issues.
