During the Cretaceous, there were two factors that had important influences on the East Asian climate, the East Asian coastal mountains and Earth's orbital cycling. An important question is how the coastal mountains modulated the variability of East Asian climate over orbital timescales. Here, we perform simulations with the coastal mountains of 0, 2, and 4 km high and three orbital configurations to answer the question. Our results show that a mountain range at the East Asian coast can amplify the impacts of orbital forcing on East Asian climate. Specifically, precipitation over the Songliao Basin in Northeastern China has significant changes as the coastal mountain range is about 4 km high. Combining our simulation results with orbitally‐controlled sedimentary deposits from the Songliao Basin, we conclude that the altitude of the coastal mountain range was very likely higher than 2 km in the Late Cretaceous. Plain Language Summary: Tectonic events and solar insolation are the two important factors impacting variations of the climate system in the geological past. Regional climate responses to variations in the radiation from the sun over 104–105 years were often magnified or dampened by tectonic events. Cretaceous sedimentary records in East Asia suggest that East Asian climate was influenced by the solar insolation. Geological evidence showed that a mountain range existed along the East Asian coast then. Would this mountain range modulate impacts of solar insolation on East Asian climate? Our modeling results show that the influence of solar insolation on East Asian climate can be amplified by the coastal mountain range, depending on the mountain elevation. When the coastal mountain range is ∼2 km high, the amplification effects become significant. When its altitude reaches ∼4 km, the response of East Asian climate to solar insolation is considerably strengthened, and such a condition is supported by the rhythm induced by the climate variation due to solar insolation archived in the Cretaceous strata in the Songliao Basin. Thus, we speculate that the East Asian coastal mountains might have reached an altitude more than 2 km in the Late Cretaceous. In winter 2020/2021, several episodes of cold air outbreaks have wreaked havoc across much of China, resulting in exceptionally low temperatures over northern‐to‐southeastern China. Our analysis shows that the anomalous circulation leading to the cold wave in China was characterized as: (a) a strengthening of the Siberian high, (b) a deepening of the East Asian trough, and (c) a weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex. Prior to the winter, in summer and autumn, the largest sea ice loss along the Siberian coast was observed. We therefore address the question whether the substantial sea ice loss has contributed to the cold wave. First, applying singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, we find strong coherence between the autumn Arctic sea ice coverage and temperatures over the central‐to‐east Asian region with the sea ice component (SVD1_SIC) reaching a record high in 2020 and displaying a decadal shift around 2005. Associated with both the interannual and decadal variations of the SVD1_SIC, there are similar circulation anomalies as described in (a), (b) and (c) above. Second, applying self‐organizing maps, wintertime daily air temperatures are clustered into nine nodes with Node‐1 mostly resembling "warm Arctic, cold Eurasia" pattern. The frequency of Node‐1 shows a similar decadal shift as observed in SVD_SIC1 above, with a correlation of about 0.56. Associated with Node‐1, the circulation anomalies are consistent with features highlighted in (a), (b) and (c) above. Thus, taking all the evidence into account, we conclude that the substantial sea ice loss along the Siberian coast contributed significantly to the 2020/2021 winter cold wave in China. The mechanism behind the contribution in this study highlights that the Arctic sea ice loss is favourable for certain circulation patterns on climate timescale, reinforcing disruptive chain of reactions on weather timescale, and leading to severe cold events. Synoptic meteorology is a branch of meteorology that uses synoptic weather observations and charts for the diagnosis, study, and forecasting of weather. Weather refers to the specific state of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface during a short period of time. The spatial distribution of meteorological elements in the atmosphere can be represented by a variety of transient weather phenomena, which are caused by weather systems of different spatial and temporal scales. Weather is closely related to people's life, and its development and evolution have always been the focus of atmospheric scientific research and operation. The development of synoptic meteorology is closely related to the development of observation systems, dynamical theories and numerical models. In China, observation networks have been built since the early 1950s. Up to now, a comprehensive meteorological observation system based on ground, air and space has been established. In particular, the development of a new generation of dense radar networks, the development of the Fengyun satellite series and the implementation of a series of large field experiments have brought our understanding of weather from large-scale environment to thermal dynamics, cloud microphysical structure and evolution characteristics of meso and micro-scale weather systems. The development of observation has also promoted the development of theory, numerical model and simulation. In the early days, China mainly used foreign numerical models. Lately, China has developed numerical model systems with independent intellectual property rights. Based on the results of high-resolution numerical simulations, in-depth understanding of the initiation and evolution mechanism and predictability of weather at different scales has been obtained. Synoptic meteorology has gradually changed from an initially independent development to a multidisciplinary approach, and the interaction between weather and the change of climate and environment has become a hot and frontier topic in atmospheric science. This paper reviews the important scientific and technological achievements made in China over the past 70 years in the fields of synoptic meteorology based on the literatures in China and abroad, from six aspects respectively including atmospheric dynamics, synoptic-scale weather, typhoon and tropical weather, severe convective weather, numerical weather prediction and data assimilation, weather and climate, atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment. The effect of spring Arctic Stratospheric Ozone (ASO) changes on spring precipitation in China is analyzed using observations, reanalysis data, and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 4 (WACCM4). We find that February-March mean ASO changes have a significant impact on April-May mean precipitation over Loess Plateau and middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River—two important grain-producing regions with large populations. Changes in the polar vortex link the ASO to precipitation in China. Stratospheric circulation anomalies caused by ASO changes can propagate to the North Pacific. An increase in ASO leads to enhanced westerlies in the high and low latitudes of the North Pacific but weakened westerly in the mid-latitudes of the North Pacific. The circulation anomalies over the North Pacific, forced by the increase of ASO, can extend westwards to East Asia, leading to an abnormal anticyclone in the East Asian upper and middle troposphere, and an abnormal cyclone in the lower troposphere. This enhances the warm and humid airstream from Western Pacific to Chinese mainland and strengthens upwelling over Loess Plateau and middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These conditions enhance precipitation in central China during positive ASO anomaly events and reduce precipitation during negative events. The WACCM4 simulations support the results from statistical analysis of observations and reanalysis data. Our results suggest that ASO variation can serve as a predictor of spring precipitation variation over Loess Plateau and middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Cryogenian nonglacial epoch (CNE) spans from the termination of the Sturtian snowball Earth (ca. 659 Ma) to the initiation of the Marinoan snowball Earth (ca. 649.2 Ma). The carbonate sequences formed in low latitudes record paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes during the CNE. Three negative carbon isotope (δ13C) excursions, named Rasthof, Tayshir and Trezona, are present at the bottom, middle, and top of the carbonate sequences, bracketing two intervals with highly positive δ13C values. Uranium isotope (δ238U) data from Mongolia reveal ocean redox changes linked to δ13C variations during the CNE, marked by the development of anoxic deep ocean to extensive oxygenation and subsequent deoxygenation. However, the timing and duration of these paleoceanographic events and δ13C excursions have not been adequately investigated. Here, we report new environmental magnetic results of the higher paleo-latitudinal, siliciclastic-dominated Datangpo Formation (Fm) in South China that may help constrain the age and correlation of the CNE geochemical events. We identified four segments of the Datangpo Fm based on the magnetic susceptibility (MS) profile and other environmental magnetic parameters, which are, in ascending order, the ascent segment (Da), lower stable-segment (Db), transition segment (Dc), and upper stable-segment (Dd). These segments are dated by the astronomical time scale as 659–655.6 Ma (Da), 655.6–653.3 Ma (Db), 653.3–652.3 Ma (Dc), and 652.3–649.2 Ma (Dd). Environmental magnetism analyses show that the highest magnetite concentration but lowest fine-grained magnetite contents are present in "Da", followed by "Dd" and "Db". These results suggest a sea-level fall and a potential decrease in oxygenation after the deposition of the transition segment (Dc), implying that a cooling climate started ∼4 Myr before the Nantuo glaciation (Marinoan snowball Earth). Ocean redox variations revealed by environmental magnetism in the Datangpo Fm are consistent with those reported from the low-latitudinal carbonate sequences. "Da" likely corresponds to the Rasthof δ13C excursion and "Dc" corresponds to the Tayshir δ 13C excursion; whereas "Db" and "Dd" probably correspond to the two intervals with positive δ 13C values. • Four segments of the Cryogenian nonglaciatial epoch in South China are identified and the time of each segment is constrained. • Environmental magnetism analyses show a climate cooling ∼4 Myr before the Nantuo glaciation (or Marinoan snowball Earth). • Siliciclastic depositions in South China are linked to carbonate depositions in low-latitude continents.
