The associations between several blood inflammatory indicators and risk of vascular plaques remain inconclusive. A total of 4596 native rural residents in Southeast China were enrolled from the Fuqing cohort study. Blood cell counts and their composite indexes including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and 2 novel indicators (systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and systemic immune inflammation response index (SIRI)) were considered as inflammatory indicators. Common carotid and femoral intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaques were assessed using B-mode ultrasound. Unconditional or multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate potential associations. The prevalence of multiple femoral plaques (defined as IMT ≥1.5 mm) was significantly higher among participants with the highest tertile of total leukocyte count (odds ratio, 1.78), neutrophil count (1.88), monocyte count (2.51), platelet count (1.68), NLR (1.93), PLR (1.57), SII (2.10), and SIRI (2.94). Higher levels of neutrophil count, platelet count, NLR, and SII were also found to have significant linear dose-response relationships with the prevalence of stenosis, especially in femoral arteries. In conclusion, several blood inflammatory biomarkers may contribute to, or are associated with, the presence of IMT ≥1.5 mm or stenosis especially in femoral arteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Emerging data suggest that the interpretation of the association between obesity and lipids appears to be oversimplified. This study aimed to quantify the complex relationships between anthropometric indices and lipid profile. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study including 9620 participants in Southern China. Anthropometric indices included the indices of general obesity (ie, body mass index (BMI)) and central obesity (ie, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)). Lipids included low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) and atherogenic lipids (ie, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), triglycerides (TG) and TG/HDLc ratio). LOESS regression and general linear model were the main statistical methods. Results: Almost all associations between anthropometric indices and lipids were lost in obese adults. The loss of association occurred quicker with LDLc than that with atherogenic lipids; the break point for the association loss was at BMI of 24 kg/m2 with LDLc (Slope Below break-point = 1.81, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 0.29, P=0.121), while at 28 kg/m2 with HDLC (Slope Below break-point = − 1.41, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 0.07, P=0.666) or TG (Slope Below break-point = 4.96, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 2.93, P=0.01), and at 30 kg/m2 with TG/HDLc ratio (Slope Below break-point = 0.15, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point= 0.01, P=0.936), respectively. Similar relationships were found for WC and WHR. Besides, the presence of other metabolic disorders contributed to the loss of anthropometry-lipids relationships, for example, the BMI-LDLc association attenuated to null in both obese adults and non-obese population but with more than one other metabolic disorders. Conclusion: The relationships were lost between anthropometric indices and lipids in obese adults with different break points across different lipids, which appeared to be dependent on metabolic status. Introduction: Whilst statistical knowledge is essential for dental students' academic or professional careers, only a few studies have measured the attitudes of these students towards statistics courses. This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of a cohort of dental students towards a formal statistical course and explore the factors that are potentially related to these attitudes. Methods: A survey was performed amongst dental students of 2017 entry at Fujian Medical University, China. The questionnaire covers three aspects: demographic characteristics, educational background and attitudes towards formal statistics courses. Results: A total of 103 dental students enrolled for the survey, and the response rate was 100.0%. 44.7% of dental students had positive attitudes towards formal statistics courses with an overall average of 25.7 (SD = 2.2, out of 30). Students' computer skills, expectations of course achievement, attention in class and learning atmosphere of the class were significantly associated with the attitudes towards formal statistics courses. Moreover, students with positive attitudes experienced a greater improvement in the statistical cognition and application ability of statistical methods after the course than those with negative/neutral attitudes. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between students' attitudes and achievement in the examination. Conclusion: These results suggest that attitudes are critical to the learning effectiveness in formal statistics courses amongst undergraduate dental students. All the educators involved should monitor the students' attitudes in the teaching process and make effective interventions to improve students' attitudes towards formal statistics courses. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the practice of 'new normal' lifestyles, economic and social distribution, and individuals' well-being of people in China after the country ease the lockdown restriction. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-administered online survey was carried out between 3 September and 15 October 2020. Results: A total of 8393 complete responses were received from a nationwide sample. Poor sustainability in the practice of "new norm" was reported. Noteworthy disparities were observed in willingness to carry out "new normal" practices by gender, urban-rural locality, non-Han and Han Chinese and educational attainment. There was evidence of economic and social disruption associated with COVID-19 or "new normal" practices. The current mean (±standard deviation [SD]) happiness score (110.45 ± 17.55) was slightly lower than the mean happiness score before (111.12 ± 17.83) the COVID-19 pandemic (t= − 9.01, p< 0.001). Lower socioeconomic status and greater economic and social disruptions were associated with lower current happiness scores. Moreover, greater willingness to adapt to "new normal" practices was associated with higher levels of happiness. Conclusion: There is a need to encourage sustainable practice of new norm post-pandemic. Segments of the public continue to experience significant economic and social effects and the post-pandemic 'new norms' remain at risk of leading to psychological consequences. Introduction: A shortage of nurses has been a major global concern, particularly during pandemics. Nursing students turning away from the nursing profession upon graduation may exacerbate nursing workforce shortfalls. The main objective of this study was to assess perceived occupational turnover intention among nursing students and associated factors (fear of COVID-19 and life satisfaction). Students were also asked to provide suggestions that could enhance their intention to join the nursing profession. Methods: An online survey was sent to all registered undergraduate nursing students at Fujian Medical University, China. The partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was used to investigate key factors influencing turnover intention. Results: A total of 1020 complete responses were received (response rate: 86.2%). Nearly half (49.1%) reported that they would choose not to be on a nursing course if given a choice, 45.4% often think of not going into the nursing profession in the future, and 23.7% would consider entering a healthcare industry that has zero contact with patients. The total turnover intention score range was 3 to 15, and the mean ± standard deviation (SD) was 9.2 (SD ± 2.5). PLS-SEM path analysis revealed that fear of COVID-19 (β = 0.226, p < 0.001) had a positive effect on turnover intention. Satisfaction with life (β = − 0.212, p < 0.001) had a negative effect on turnover intention. Analysis of open-ended survey data on students' perspectives on how to encourage nursing students to enter the nursing workforce revealed five central themes: 1) professional role, respect, and recognition; 2) higher wages; 3) reduce workload; 4) enhance occupational health and safety; and 5) career advancement opportunities. Conclusion: Factors influencing turnover intention and suggestions to reduce students' apprehension towards joining the nursing profession found in this study should be seriously taken into consideration in initiatives to address the nurse shortages. Background: Non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease and an unhealthy lifestyle can lead to an increased risk of NAFLD. The present study aims to evaluate the association of meat consumption with NAFLD risk and liver-related biochemical indexes in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in individuals who were 45 years or older and underwent a physical examination from April 2015 to August 2017 in Southeast China. To evaluate associations between meat intake and NAFLD risk, inverse probability of treatment weighting and subgroup analyses were performed with logistic regressions. Spearman's rank correlation was carried out to examine the relationship between meat consumptions and liver-related biochemical indexes.Results: High consumptions of red meat (28.44-49.74 and > 71.00 g/day) (ORadjusted = 1.948; P < 0.001; ORadjusted = 1.714; P = 0.002) was positively associated with NAFLD risk on inverse probability of treatment weighting analysis, adjusting for smoking, tea intake, weekly hours of physical activity and presence of hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. Exposure-response relationship analysis presented that red meat intake was positively associated with NAFLD risk. Significant associations of red meat intakes with serum levels of γ-glutamyl transferase, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, total triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were found (rs = 0.176; P < 0.001; rs = 0.128; P < 0.001; rs = 0.060; P = 0.016; rs = 0.085; P = 0.001; rs = - 0.074; P = 0.003).Conclusions: These findings suggest that the reduction of meat consumption may decrease NAFLD risk and should warrant further investigations. Background: This study attempts to understand coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine demand and hesitancy by assessing the public's vaccination intention and willingness-to-pay (WTP). Confidence in COVID-19 vaccines produced in China and preference for domestically-made or foreign-made vaccines was also investigated. Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional, self-administered online survey was conducted on 1–19 May 2020. The health belief model (HBM) was used as a theoretical framework for understanding COVID-19 vaccination intent and WTP. Results: A total of 3,541 complete responses were received. The majority reported a probably yes intent (54.6%), followed by a definite yes intent (28.7%). The perception that vaccination decreases the chances of getting COVID-19 under the perceived benefit construct (OR = 3.14, 95% CI 2.05–4.83) and not being concerned about the efficacy of new COVID-19 vaccines under the perceived barriers construct (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.31–2.09) were found to have the highest significant odds of a definite intention to take the COVID-19 vaccine. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) of WTP for COVID-19 vaccine was CNY¥200/US$28 (IQR CNY¥100–500/USD$14–72). The highest marginal WTP for the vaccine was influenced by socio-economic factors. The majority were confident (48.7%) and completely confident (46.1%) in domestically-made COVID-19 vaccine. 64.2% reported a preference for a domestically-made over foreign-made COVID-19 vaccine. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the utility of HBM constructs in understanding COVID-19 vaccination intent and WTP. It is important to improve health promotion and reduce the barriers to COVID-19 vaccination. Author summary: This study investigated vaccine demand and hesitancy by assessing the intention to vaccinate against COVID-19 and willingness-to-pay. We found that a considerable proportion of the public in China has a definite intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine; a higher proportion expressed a probable intention. Perceived benefits and barriers to vaccination (namely vaccine efficacy and adverse event concerns) of the health belief model constructs were significant predictors of COVID-19 vaccination intent. A substantial proportion was concerned about fake or faulty COVID-19 vaccines; however, this was not a significant predictor of vaccination intention. The willingness-to-pay for the COVID-19 was determined and was found to be positively associated with income. Higher confidence in domestically-made COVID-19 vaccines was also found in this study. The preference for domestically-made over foreign-made COVID-19 vaccines indicates that a future COVID-19 vaccine developed by domestic companies will receive a favourable response from the public in China.The findings of this study provide useful guidance for tailored interventions to enhance the acceptance of a new COVID-19 vaccine once it is available. Background: New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) was developed to improve the health security for rural residents. This study aimed to assess the trend of disparity between coastland and inland in medical expenditure burden for rural inpatients with malignant tumor from 2007 to 2016 under the effect of NRCMS.Methods: The data from medical records of 1,306,895 patients with malignant tumor who had NRCMS in 2932 hospitals was collected. The relative differences [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] between coastland and inland in four medical expense indicators were calculated using generalized linear models to assess the trend of disparity over time.Results: In total, there were 769,484 (58.88%) coastland patients and 537,411 (41.12%) inland patients. Male and patients aged older than 44 years accounted for 56.87 and 80% of 1,306,895 patients, respectively. After adjusting for gender, age, tumor site and hospital level, coastland patients had higher hospitalization expenses which were all medical expenses incurred during the hospitalization, lower reimbursement ratio and ratio of out-of-pocket expenses to disposable income than inland patients in most years. The surgery expenses of coastland patients were lower than those of inland patients in 2016. The relative differences (95% CIs) between coastland and inland in medical expense indicators were moving closer to 1.0 from 2007 to 2010 among patients without surgery, implying that the disparity between two areas significantly narrowed. The range of change was similar between two areas from 2011 to 2016 whether among patients without or with surgery, implying that the disparity did not significantly change. The disparity between coastland and inland depended on the household income situation. For low-income patients, the differences between two areas in medical expense indicators were not statistically significance in most cases and the disparity between two areas did not significantly change over time.Conclusions: Under the effect of NRCMS, the medical expenditure burden of rural inpatients reduced but suffering from malignant tumor was still catastrophic. As a whole, the inland patients had heavier medical expenditure burden than coastland patients. Background: To investigate whether human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with primary lung cancer among the Fujian population. Methods: HPV infection was detected in 140 pairs of lung cancer tissues and matched paracancerous tissues by examining the 21 clinically relevant HPV types using a combination of viral highly conserved L1 region PCR amplification and specific probe reverse hybridization. Paired χ2 test was used to analyze differences in detection rates of HPV between lung cancer and paracancerous tissues. Differences in detection rates of HPV in lung cancer tissues were analyzed using χ2 test or the exact probability method. The rank sum test was used to analyze differences in the distributions of routine indices of blood and pulmonary function in lung cancer tissues between the HPV negative and positive groups. Results: HPV infection was detected in 13 of the 140 tumor specimens and in 16 of the paired normal lung tissues. There was no significant correlation between HPV infection and lung cancer (P > 0.05). The diagnosed HPV infection rates did not differ significantly among lung cancer tissues with different stratification (P > 0.05). However, the platelet count, platelet pressure, residual gas volume, functional residual volume, and residual gas volume/lung total distribution may differ between HPV‐negative and HPV‐positive lung cancer tissues (0.000625 < P < 0.05). Conclusions: We concluded that HPV infection may not be associated with the risk of primary lung cancer in the Fujian population. Serum levels of ferritin, hepcidin, and C-reactive protein were measured. >bold<>italic/italic<>/bold< Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that hepcidin was not associated with NAFLD risk; however, elevated serum ferritin was significantly associated with increased risk of NAFLD (adjusted OR 1.619, 95% CI 1.158–2.267), and hepcidin:ferritin ratio was significantly associated with decreased risk of NAFLD -(OR->sub/sub< 0.702, 95% CI 0.501–0.984). As an important technology and strategy for revenue and profitability optimization, revenue management (RM) has caught wide attention in the international hotel industry, especially in developed countries, such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia. It has been an important subject for research in the world since it was introduced to the American hotel industry by Marriott about 30 years ago. However, it has been only a few years since Chinese domestic hoteliers began to pay attention to RM. Even now, only a small percentage of hotels in China have applied RM strategies and tactics in their daily pricing and distribution practices. Most of Chinese hotels owned or/and operated by domestic hotel companies without carrying an international brand name have just started to hear about the word of RM when they compete with other hotels run by international hotel chains, most of which have implemented RM. Therefore, the understanding and application of RM in Chinese hotel industry is still in its infancy. This paper is the first empirical study to learn what the factors are that affect hotel RM decision-making and its performance in the unique context of China. Our study is based on in-depth interviews with hotel industry leaders in China and an online survey of 174 valid questionnaires answered by the hoteliers from different high star-rated hotels throughout the country. We used quantitative approaches to analyze the data we have collected. We also compared our findings with those of international researchers. We found that: (1) Who owns or/and runs the hotel affects significantly the hotel's RM decision-making and performance. For example, if a Chinese hotel owner hires an international hotel management contractor to operate its hotel(s), it tends to accept RM and support the management contractor to practice it. If an international hotel chain owns or/and runs a hotel in China, it is highly possible that it will use RM approaches in daily operation to yield the hotel's products and services as it does in other hotels in other countries. (2) The size or the number of guest rooms of a hotel greatly affects its RM decision-making; but it is not related to the hotel's RM performance. On the other hand, a hotel's star rating has strong impact on its RM performance; but it does not affect RM decision-making. (3) Unlike what some international researchers have found, the location, average room rate, occupancy rate and market segmentation of a hotel do not affect its RM decision-making and its RM performance. In conclusion, we suggest that given the current situation in China, the understanding of RM among Chinese hotel owners and managers' and their attitude towards RM play the most important role in RM decision-making and performance. If they understand RM and believe it is helpful, managers will welcome it and invest time and other resources on it. If it is the case, RM decision making will be much easier and effective and it will lead to better RM performance. To make that happen, Chinese hotels, hotel associations, hotel schools, tourism and hotel government authorities need to work together to invest in and improve RM training and education. • A novel expansion planning model for urban integrated energy system is proposed. • The transportation network is incorporated into the model, in which fast and slow charging modes are considered. • A layered-based framework for the optimization model of the urban integrated energy system is proposed. • A two-layer optimization algorithm is designed to solve the proposed model. • Simulation results based on a real case in China indicate the superiority of the proposed approach. In the modern metropolitan regions, the coupling among distribution networks (DNs), gas networks (GNs), and transportation networks (TNs) is increasingly intensified, which gives rise to the urgent demand for efficient modeling and solving methods. In this context, a mathematical model for the configuration planning of integrated energy systems is proposed in this paper. With the aim of minimizing total planning costs, the model jointly considers the investment and operation strategies for distribution lines, distributed wind power generators (DWGs), combined heat and power units (CHPs), power to gas units (P2Gs), gas furnaces (GFs), fast charging facilities (FCFs) and slow charging facilities (SCFs). Since the proposed model comes down to a non-convex and nonlinear optimization problem, a two-layer algorithm is designed to solve it. In the outer layer, a genetic algorithm (GA) is performed to obtain a set of individuals representing the investment decisions on distribution lines, DWGs, and FCFs, which will be delivered to the inner layer model. With fixed decision variables, the inner model optimizes the operating costs, charging profit coefficients, and strategies for DWGs and energy converters in a coordinated manner. This study aims to investigate acceptance and willingness to pay for HPV vaccination among adult women in China. An online survey was sent to mothers aged 27–45 years of primary school pupils in the Fujian province, China. Participants completed questions about HPV related knowledge and health beliefs, intention to take the HPV vaccine and the willingness to pay for bivalent vaccine (2vHPV), quadrivalent vaccine (4vHPV), and 9-valent HPV vaccine (9vHPV). Of a total of 2339 complete responses, 58.3% reported intent to obtain HPV vaccine. Mothers who were younger in age, residing in urban, working in managerial or professional occupations, who knew someone with cervical cancer and who were able to make independent decisions about the HPV vaccine (vs. joint decision with spouse) were more likely to express intent to have HPV vaccination. Perceived barriers, cues to action and self-efficacy were three of the constructs in the health belief model that significantly influenced HPV vaccination intent. A higher proportion of participants expressed willingness to pay for 2vHPV (81.2%) and 4vHPV (75.9%), as compared to 9vHPV (67.7%). Adults women expressed moderate intention to receive the HPV vaccine. Intervention to address barriers to uptake of the HPV vaccine among adult women in China is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little research has been conducted on the intention to obtain HPV vaccine now that the vaccine is approved for use in China. Acceptance of the three HPV vaccines, which differ in valency and price, has never been investigated. An online cross-sectional survey assessing female undergraduate students' intention to obtain the HPV vaccine and their acceptability of 2-, 4- and 9-valent HPV vaccines (2vHPV, 4vHPV, and 9vHPV, respectively). Of a total of 997 complete responses, 55.2% reported intent to obtain the HPV vaccine. Some of the significant factors exerting influence on intent to obtain HPV vaccination were high knowledge score (OR = 1.469, 95% CI:1.087–1.987), perceived high risk of HPV infection (OR = 1.466, 95%CI:1.017–2.114), perception of no serious side effects (OR = 1.562, 95%CI:1.150–2.121), and mass media exposure to HPV vaccination information (OR = 2.196, 95%CI: 1.625–2.966). Socioeconomic status indicators did not significantly influence intent to obtain the HPV vaccine. A higher proportion of respondents were willing to pay for 2vHPV (78.6%) and 4vHPV (68.0%) compared with 9vHPV (49.3%). Socioeconomic status indicators were the strongest correlates of acceptability for all the three vaccines. Exposure to mass media reporting about HPV vaccination is the factor which exerts the most influence on acceptance of 9vHPV after socioeconomic status indicators. It is important to improve knowledge and health beliefs, and to establish a mass media marketing strategy to promote HPV vaccination in order to enhance HPV vaccine uptake. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is bringing about substantial changes in health care systems, leading to a significant shift toward telemedicine for the delivery of health care services., Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between perceived usefulness and ease of use of telemedicine services and their association with the behavioral intention to use telemedicine., Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted in China. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to determine significant predictors of intention to use telemedicine consultation. Types of illnesses that favored seeking telemedicine consultation, as well as the most preferred platform for conducting telemedicine consultations, were also investigated., Results: In total, 1006 participants completed the survey. A total of 44.3% (n=446) reported being very likely and 49.3% (n=496) reported being likely to seek telemedicine consultation. Overall, the majority of participants expressed strong agreement or agreement regarding the perceived usefulness of telemedicine. Likewise, the majority indicated strong agreement or agreement when it came to their perception of the ease of using telemedicine. In the partial least squares structural equation modeling, perceived usefulness (β=0.322; P<.001) and perceived ease of use (β=0.118; P=.01) were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of seeking telemedicine consultation. A considerable number of participants expressed willingness to use telemedicine services for various medical conditions, particularly respiratory (n=340, 33.8%), skin (n=316, 31.4%), and musculoskeletal issues (n=316, 31.4%) while showing less interest in seeking telemedicine consultations for reproductive health (n=44, 4.4%) and cancer (n=64, 6.4%). The majority preferred video chat (n=443, 44%) and text chat (n=317, 31.5%) as their most preferred platforms for telemedicine consultation, while a smaller proportion preferred telephone (n=193, 19.2%) and email (n=53, 5.3%)., Conclusions: Telemedicine has the potential to play a larger role in China's health care system. Background: Heterosexual contact is the primary mode of HIV transmission in China and commercial sex is thought to play a crucial role in China's epidemic. Female sex workers (FSWs) in China tend to be either brothel-based (BSWs) or street-based (SSWs), but few studies have investigated the differences between these important segments of this difficult-to-reach, high-risk population. Our aim was to explore the differences between SSWs and BSWs in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, sexual and risky practices, HIV/STI-related knowledge, health services, HIV/STI prevalence and other aspects., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Yunnan Province of China in partnership with a local FSW-friendly non-governmental organization. Face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire were conducted to collect data on socio-demographic characteristics, sex work history, sexual behaviours, HIV/STI-related knowledge, HIV testing history, and healthcare services uptake. Blood samples were taken for HIV and syphilis testing, and urine samples for gonorrhea and chlamydia testing. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate differences between SSWs and BSWs., Results: A total of 185 BSWs and 129 SSWs were included in the study. SSWs were older and less educated, had more dependents and more clients, lower condom use and accessed fewer healthcare services. Moreover, 37.2% of SSWs and 24.9% of BSWs were found to have HIV/STI infection. Unfortunately, the awareness related to STIs was relatively low in both groups, especially SSWs., Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that confirms the disproportionately high vulnerability of SSWs to HIV and other STIs, underscoring the urgent need for the Chinese health and public health sectors to prioritize outreach to SSWs. Background: Regular follow-up and medication can effectively reduce the risk of adverse outcomes for patients with hypertension. This study aimed to explore the temporal-spatial distribution characteristics and associated socioeconomic factors of visiting frequency for rural patients with hypertension in Fujian province from 2011 to 2016., Methods: The medical records of patients with hypertension were abstracted from the database of New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme. Geographically and temporally weighted regression model was used to analyze the associations between percentage of patients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times within a year and seven socioeconomic factors at the county level., Results: The visiting rate of rural patients with hypertension was 0.79%, 1.27%, 1.87%, 2.29%, 2.78%, 3.43% over the six-year study period, respectively. The percentage of patients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times within a year gradually increased over time and the percentage ranged from 61 to 80% in a half of the counties by 2016. In general, there was positive association between Gross Domestic Product per capita and the percentage of patients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times within a year. The percentage of female patients, percentage of patients who aged ≥ 60 years, percentage of low-income patients, carbon emission intensity, percentage of savings and number of health technicians per 10,000 persons were negatively correlated with the percentage of patients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times within a year in most of counties of Fujian Province. In the sensitivity analysis, the percentage of outpatients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times within a year was higher than that of all patients. There was positive association between percentage of outpatients who aged ≥ 60 years and the percentage of outpatients whose visiting frequency ≥ 4 times., Conclusions: The visiting rate and the visiting frequency within a year for rural patients with hypertension in Fujian province need to be improved. Female and elderly patients should be the focus of health management. Background: Other infectious diarrhea (OID) continues to pose a significant public health threat to all age groups in Fujian Province. There is a need for an in-depth analysis to understand the epidemiological pattern of OID and its associated risk factors in the region., Objective: In this study, we aimed to describe the overall epidemic characteristics and spatiotemporal pattern of OID in Fujian Province from 2005 to 2021 and explore the linkage between sociodemographic and environmental factors and the occurrence of OID within the study area., Methods: Notification data for OID in Fujian were extracted from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. The spatiotemporal pattern of OID was analyzed using Moran index and Kulldorff scan statistics. The seasonality of and short-term impact of meteorological factors on OID were examined using an additive decomposition model and a generalized additive model. Geographical weighted regression and generalized linear mixed model were used to identify potential risk factors., Results: A total of 388,636 OID cases were recorded in Fujian Province from January 2005 to December 2021, with an average annual incidence of 60.3 (SD 16.7) per 100,000 population. Children aged <2 years accounted for 50.7% (196,905/388,636) of all cases. There was a steady increase in OID from 2005 to 2017 and a clear seasonal shift in OID cases from autumn to winter and spring between 2005 and 2020. Higher maximum temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and precipitation were linked to a higher number of deseasonalized OID cases. The spatial and temporal aggregations were concentrated in Zhangzhou City and Xiamen City for 17 study years. Furthermore, the clustered areas exhibited a dynamic spreading trend, expanding from the southernmost Fujian to the southeast and then southward over time. Factors such as densely populated areas with a large <1-year-old population, less economically developed areas, and higher pollution levels contributed to OID cases in Fujian Province., Conclusions: This study revealed a distinct distribution of OID incidence across different population groups, seasons, and regions in Fujian Province. Zhangzhou City and Xiamen City were identified as the major hot spots for OID. Background: Variations in the prevalence and systemic inflammatory (SI) status between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and newly defined metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) have only been reported by few studies. Hence, this study aimed to compile data on the prevalence and the systemic inflammation levels of MAFLD and NAFLD in a general population from Southeast China was summarized to explore the potential effect of the transformation of disease definition., Methods: A total of 6718 general population participants aged 35-75 were enrolled. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to examine the relationship between 15 SI indicators and NAFLD and MAFLD. The predicted values of MAFLD and NAFLD were analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve., Results: The prevalence of MAFLD and NAFLD was 34.7% and 32.4%, respectively. Their overlapping rate was 89.7%, while only 8.3% and 1.9% of participants were MAFLD-only and NAFLD-only. Among three FLD groups, the MAFLD-only group had the highest levels of 8 SI indicators, including CRP, WBC, LYMPH, NEUT, MONO, ALB, NLR, and SIRI. The non-FLD group had the lower levels of all 15 SI indicators compared with all FLD subgroups. The odds ratios (ORs) of 10 SI indicators were significant in both multivariable-adjusted logistic regression and RCS analyses of MAFLD or NAFLD, including CRP, WBC, LYMPH, NEUT, MONO, ALB, PLR, LMR, ALI and CA. ROC analysis showed that the AUC values of all SI were lower than 0.7 in both MAFLD and NAFLD., Conclusions: MAFLD could cover more FLD than NAFLD, and the MAFLD-only group had a more severe inflammation status, whereas the NAFLD-only exhibited lower levels. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the determinants of gastric cancer screening attendance among individuals aged 40 years in a region with high gastric cancer in China., Design: An anonymous, cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2021 and March 2022., Setting: A self-administered online survey was conducted in Fujian Province in Southeastern China., Participants: People aged 40 years living in five selected cities in Fujian Province with no history of cancer., Main Outcome Measures: Gastric cancer screening attendance was measured with the question 'Have you ever been screened for gastric cancer in the past'., Results: In total, 2547 complete responses were obtained. The mean age of respondents was 47.72±7.20 years, and 59.8% were men. A total of 42.6% of participants reported that they had undergone gastric cancer screening. The result of multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that participants with a first-degree relative affected with gastric cancer (OR=2.02, 95% CI: 1.58 to 2.59) and high perceived susceptibility of gastric cancer (OR=2.03, 95% CI: 1.58 to 2.59) were the strongest facilitators for screening attendance. Other factors positively associated with screening attendance were age 51-60 years (OR=1.69, 95% CI: 1.31 to 2.18), living in urban regions (OR=1.27, 95% CI: 1.05 to 1.55), friends/neighbours/colleagues with gastric cancer (OR=1.30, 95% CI: 1.07 to 1.58), history of chronic gastric disease (OR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.57 to 2.30), perceived high cost (OR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.61) and physician recommendation (OR=1.71, 95% CI: 1.36 to 2.16). On the other hand, factors negatively associated with screening attendance included perceived barriers, namely screening is only necessary when symptoms present (OR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.58 to 0.87) and perceived appointment for gastroscopy screening is difficult and time-consuming (OR=0.75, 95% CI: 0.60 to 0.94). No significant association was found between knowledge level and participation in screening., Conclusion: This study highlights important individual-level factors and barriers to gastric cancer screening. In 2022, COVID-19 solutions in China have entered a normal stage, and the solutions imported from ports have been transformed from emergency prevention and control measures to investigative long-term prevention and control measures. Therefore, it is necessary to study solutions for COVID-19 at border ports. In this study, 170 research papers related to the prevention and control measures of COVID-19 at ports from 2020 to September 2022 were retrieved from Wanfang database, HowNet database, Wip database, and WoS core collection. Citespace 6.1.R2 software was used to research institutions visualize and analyze researchers and keywords to explore their research hotspots and trends. After analysis, the overall volume of documents issued in the past 3 years was stable. The major contributors are scientific research teams such as the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine Sciences (Han Hui et al.) and Beijing Customs (Sun Xiaodong et al.), with less cross-agency cooperation. The top five high-frequency keywords with cumulative frequency are as follows: COVID-19 (29 times), epidemic prevention and control (29 times), ports (28 times), health quarantine (16 times), and risk assessment (16 times). The research hotspots in the field of prevention and control measures for COVID-19 at ports are constantly changing with the progress of epidemic prevention and control. Cooperation between research institutions needs to be strengthened urgently. Background: Despite the known increasing incidence of breast cancer in China, evidence on the spatial pattern of hospitalization for breast cancer is scarce. This study aimed to describe the disparity of breast cancer hospitalization in the rural population of Southeast China and to explore the impacts of socioeconomic factors and heavy metal pollution in soil., Methods: This study was conducted using the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) claims data covering 20.9 million rural residents from 73 counties in Southeast China during 2015-2016. The associations between breast cancer hospitalization and socioeconomic factors and soil heavy metal pollutants were evaluated with quasi-Poisson regression models and geographically weighted Poisson regressions (GWPR)., Results: The annual hospitalization rate for breast cancer was 101.40/100,000 in the studied area and the rate varied across different counties. Overall, hospitalization for breast cancer was associated with road density (β = 0.43, P = 0.02), urbanization (β = 0.02, P = 0.002) and soil cadmium (Cd) pollution (β = 0.01, P = 0.02). In the GWPR model, a stronger spatial association of Cd, road density and breast cancer hospitalization was found in the northeast regions of the study area while breast cancer hospitalization was mainly related to urbanization in the western regions., Conclusions: Soil Cd pollution, road density, and urbanization were associated with breast cancer hospitalization in different regions. Objectives: To assess the effects of 'Sanming model' on drug-related expenditures., Design: Interrupted time series analysis with two time points was conducted to analyse the effects of 'Sanming model' using segmented regression model., Setting: Two hundred and eighty public hospitals in Fujian province in China., Participants: A total of 777 171 inpatients and 792 743 outpatients with cancer who participated in New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) were included., Interventions: 'Sanming model' was issued by Sanming government in February 2013 and spread to other cities in Fujian province in January 2015., Primary Outcome Measures: Four drug-related expenditure variables., Results: Among inpatients, total drug expenditures and drug expenditures covered by NRCMS dropped instantly after the reform in all hospitals. Although there was insignificant change during the short-term reform period, the total drug expenditures and drug expenditures covered by NRCMS decreased at the rate of ¥20.3 (p=0.0099) and ¥18.8 (p=0.0341) per capita month-to-month during the long-term reform period in Sanming hospitals, respectively. Among outpatients, total drug expenditures and drug expenditures covered by NRCMS decreased at the rate of ¥20.8 (p=0.0335) and ¥18.4 (p=0.0242) per capita month-to-month during the short-term reform period in Sanming hospitals, respectively. However, the downward trend did not continue into the long term. The significant decreases in trend of drug expenditures uncovered by NRCMS were only observed after the reform in provincial hospitals. The ratio of drug expenditures to inpatient (outpatient) expenditures decreased after the reform in all hospitals., Conclusions: 'Sanming model' had long-term effect in reducing total drug expenditures, drug ratio and drug expenditures covered by NRCMS for rural inpatients with cancer and only short-term positive effect for outpatients. However, there was limited effect of 'Sanming model' on drug expenditures uncovered by NRCMS. This study aimed to investigate nursing students' perspectives regarding the role of nurses as HPV vaccine advocates and their perception of barriers to advocacy. A cross-sectional study using a Web-based survey was sent out to all undergraduate nursing students enrolled at the Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China. A total of 1,041 students responded to the survey. In total, 58.0% of students expressed an intent to advocate HPV vaccines as a counselor and 56.4% as an HPV information provider in their future practice. However, 33.4% stated that they do not intend to be HPV vaccine advocates. Grade 1 students, students from homes with higher annual household incomes and those with a higher level of knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination expressed higher intentions to advocate for HPV vaccines as a counselor. Students who have a higher level of knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccination and have received HPV vaccines reported a higher advocacy intent in the provision of HPV information. The main perceived barriers in HPV vaccine advocacy include inadequate training (87.1%) and insufficient HPV-related knowledge (84.8%); also, anxious patients may not feel comfortable with nurses discussing HPV vaccination (52.8%). Nurses are uniquely positioned to nurture patient HPV vaccine acceptance and maybe the key strategy to increase HPV vaccination coverage in China. Institutional support is needed to train nurses as HPV vaccine advocates and should focus on enhancing HPV-related knowledge while destigmatising the embarrassment around discussing HPV-related issues with patients.

Men involvement in HPV vaccine advocacy is important in a patriarchal society. This study aimed to investigate the influence of men on HPV vaccination of adult women. An online cross-sectional survey was undertaken between June and August 2019. Participants were fathers of children enrolled in schools in Fujian Province. A total of 1953 participants responded to our survey. Just over 60% reported they would definitely or likely support their spouse/partner to receive HPV vaccine. Physician recommendation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 5.68, 95%CI = 3.89-6.86) and spouse/partner communication about HPV vaccination (aOR = 5.30, 95%CI = 3.72-7.55) were significant covariates associated with higher willingness to support women's HPV vaccination. Perceiving HPV vaccination as only for women who have had multiple sex partners and HPV vaccination as a sensitive topic were significantly associated with lower willingness to support HPV vaccination. Over two-thirds (67.3%) reported joint HPV vaccination decision-making and 2.8% reported that it was entirely the man's decision. The role of men in HPV vaccine acceptance and hesitancy among adult women is evident in China and warrants educational interventions to target men to enhance women's HPV vaccination uptake.

This study aimed to investigate multi-dimensional psychological and social factors that influence the willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster in China. A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted between March and April 2022. A total of 6375 complete responses were received. The majority were of age 18 to 40 years old (80.0%) and college-educated (49.2%). In total, 79% responded extremely willing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster. By demographics, younger age, females, higher education, and participants with the lowest income reported higher willingness. Having a very good health status (odds ratio [OR] 3.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.92-4.34) and a higher score of vaccine confidence (OR 3.50, 95% CI 2.98-4.11) were associated with an increased willingness to receive a booster shot. Experiencing no side effects with primary COVID-19 vaccination (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.89-3.20) and higher perceived susceptibility of COVID-19 infection (OR 2.38, 95% CI 1.92-2.95) were also associated with an increased willingness to receive a booster shot. A variety of psychosocial factors, namely having no chronic diseases, lower perceived concern over the safety of a booster shot, higher perceived severity of COVID-19 infection, and a higher level of institutional trust, were also significantly associated with greater willingness to get a booster shot. In conclusion, the present study adds evidence to the significant role of psychosocial factors in predicting COVID-19 vaccine booster acceptance and provides insights to design interventions to increase booster uptake in certain targeted demographic groups.

This paper aimed to explore the correlation between PM 2.5 concentration and hospitalization rate of esophageal cancer in Fujian province, and tried to find out the accurate lag effect between PM 2.5 and hospitalization rate in 70 counties from the linear and nonlinear aspects. We extracted inpatients data of esophageal cancer from the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) database and air pollutant PM 2.5 grid data published by the atmospheric composition analysis group. The study showed that the hospitalization rate of esophageal cancer presented spatial aggregation in 70 counties of Fujian province. Southeast urban agglomerations had high hospitalization rates, while central and western regions had low hospitalization rates. The study found that the spatial distribution of the hospitalization rate of esophageal cancer in 2016 was not consistent with that of the PM 2.5 concentration in the same year. The concentration of PM 2.5 in 2003 and 2004 had the strongest correlation with the hospitalization rate of esophageal cancer in 2016, with Pearson correlation coefficient r value of - 0.365 and Geodetector q-statistic value of 0.148 (p < 0.05). Our findings showed that there existed a 13-year lag period of air pollutant PM 2.5 on the esophageal cancer hospitalization rate, which can provide helpful guidance in the early screening strategy of esophageal cancer in Fujian. Background: As the incidence of gastric cancer (GC) increases sharply in adults aged over 40 years, screening of this high-risk population is important. This study aimed to explore knowledge level of GC related risk factors and symptoms, and to identify influencing factors associated with intention toward GC screening among people aged 40 years old and above in China., Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted among people aged 40 years old and above between October 2021 and March 2022 in Southeastern China. The participants' knowledge was assessed by a series of questions about risk factors (24-item scale) and warning symptoms (14-item scale)., Results: A total of 2547 complete responses were received. The mean age was 47.72 (±7.20) years and near 60% were male. Respondents had a moderate level of knowledge about risk factors and warning symptoms of GC. The total mean knowledge score was 23.9 (±9.8) out of a possible score of 38. Majority (80%) of respondents reported intention to be screened for GC in the next 5 years. The most influential predictors of screening intention were income level (OR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.36-3.32), perceived benefits (OR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.33-2.73), perceived severity (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.20-2.34), ever took GC screening (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.28-2.08), perceived poor overall health (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.19-2.11), and perceived barriers (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.17-2.09). Other significant factors were ever diagnosed with chronic gastric diseases, total knowledge score, and cues-to-action. The major reasons for not willing to take screening were "endoscopy is uncomfortable" (29.6%), "worry about screening results" (23.6%), and "have no symptoms" (21.3%)., Conclusion: High-risk population aged 40 years and above expressed high intention to receive GC screening. This study aims to determine the intention of Chinese parents to vaccinate their children against SARS-CoV-2. Secondly, preferences for foreign- or domestically made COVID-19 vaccines were also explored. A nationwide, cross-sectional, self-administered online survey based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) and new vaccine concerns was used. Participants were eligible if they were residents of China with children aged 12 years old or younger. A total of 2,026 parents responded to the survey. Half reported a probable intent (50.7%) and 26.9% reported a definite intent. The results of the data analysis of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) found that perceived cost barriers (B = -0.210, p < .001) and new vaccine concerns (B = -0.201, p < .001) had major effects in vaccination intent. Important constructs of vaccine concerns that predict vaccination intent were efficacy (B = 0.898, p < .001), followed by safety (B = 0.861, p < .001), side-effect (B = 0.806, p < .001) and faulty/fake vaccine (B = 0.579, p < .001). Perceived benefits (B = 1.81, p < .001), self-efficacy (B = 0.159, p < .001) and severity (B = 0.083, p < .01) were also significant predictors in vaccination intent. Almost two-thirds (62.0%; 95%CI 59.8 to 64.1) reported a preference for domestically made and 19.1% (95%CI 17.2 to 20.7) preferred foreign-made COVID-19 vaccines. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that higher incomes and concern of side-effects of the new COVID-19 vaccine were two of the most important influencing factors of preference for a foreign-made vaccine. This study sheds light on the importance of addressing concerns of new vaccines and the helpfulness of HBM in understanding parental decisions toward their children being vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2.

Background: As China embraced an aging society, the burden of age-related diseases had increased dramatically. Knowledge about spatial distribution characteristics of disease burden and the influencing factors of medical expenditure is of great significance to the formulation of health policies. However, related research in rural China is still insufficient. Methods: A total of 5,744,717 records of hospitalized rural elderly in southeast China were collected from 2010 to 2016. We described the temporal trends of hospitalization medical expenditure and the prevalence of catastrophic health expenses (CHE) in the rural elderly by common diseases. Then, geographical information tools were used for visualization of geographic distribution patterns of CHE, the ordinary least squares methods (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) were employed to examine the influencing factors of medical expenditure. Results: The number of CHE hospitalizations and the total number of hospitalizations for the rural elderly people increased by 2.1 times and 2.2 times, respectively, from 2010 to 2016. Counties with a high prevalence of CHE were clustered in the eastern coastal area (Moran's I = 0.620, P < 0.001, General G < 0.001, P < 0.001). Unspecified transport accidents, cardiovascular disease, and essential hypertension were the top causes of CHE in the rural elderly. Adequate hospital beds ( P < 0.05) and reasonable utilization and distribution of town-level ( P < 0.001) and county-level hospitals ( P < 0.001) may help reduce medical expenditures. Conclusions: In the context of an aging society, the disease burden for the elderly in rural areas should arouse more attention. Our aim was to examine perceived occupational turnover intentions among medical students and the associated factors. A cross-sectional study using a Web-based survey was conducted. A total of 2922 completed responses were received (response rate 55.7%). A total of 58.4% (95% CI 56.6-60.2) reported high turnover intention (score of 7-15). The odds of higher total turnover score among the fifth-year students was nearly four times that of first-year students (OR = 3.88, 95% CI 2.62-5.73). Perception of the medical profession as not being of high social status and reputation significantly influenced high turnover intention scores (OR = 2.26, 95% CI 1.90-2.68). All three dimensions of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) significantly predict turnover intention. Lower scores in the support from Significant Other (OR = 1.47, 95% CI 1.17-1.84), Family (OR = 1.47, 95% CI 1.18-1.83) and Friend (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 1.14-1.77) subscales were associated with higher turnover intention. Low score in the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) was also associated with higher turnover intention (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.17-1.77). The findings shed light on the importance of changing public attitudes towards respecting the medical profession and improving the implementation of policies to protect the well-being of people in the medical profession.

Objective: Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) outbreak, has been locked down on January 23, 2020. We conducted a study among the lay public in Wuhan to access their support, understanding of, compliance with, and the psychological impacts of the quarantine., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, online-based survey study between January 28, 2020, and February 2, 2020 among the adult lay public in Wuhan to access their support, understanding of, compliance with, and the psychological impacts of the quarantine. Multivariable logistic analysis was used to identify factors associated with psychological impacts., Results: Among the 4100 participants investigated, a total of 15.9% were compliant with all the five household prevention measures, whereas 74.4% were compliant with all the three community prevention measures investigated. By demographics, participants of younger age, higher income, residing in an urban area, knowing neighbors infected with COVID-19 reported significantly higher psychological impact score. Participants with a lower level of support for quarantine were more likely to have a higher psychological impact score (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.07-1.96). Participants with a lower level of compliance with preventive measures (score of 0-19) reported higher psychological impact (OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60 vs. score 20-24). Participants who had been out of house socializing and attended public events expressed higher psychological impact., Conclusions: Support, understanding of the rationale for quarantine are essential in ensuring appropriate psychological well-being during the quarantine. Background: Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, was locked down on January 23, 2020. We aimed to investigate the barriers to the physical prevention, negative attitudes, and anxiety levels., Methods: A online cross-sectional survey was conducted with the people living in Wuhan between March 12th and 23rd, 2020., Results: Of a total of 2411 complete responses, the mean and standard deviation for the total physical prevention barriers score was 19.73 (standard deviation ± 5.3; range 12-45) out of a possible score of 48. Using a cut-off score of 44 for the State-Trait Inventory score, 79.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 78.2-81.5) of the participants reported moderate to severe anxiety during the early phase of the outbreak, and 51.3% (95% CI 49.2-53.3) reported moderate to severe anxiety after the peak of coronavirus disease 2019 was over (during the study period). Comparing anxiety levels in the early phase of the outbreak and after the peak of the outbreak, 58.5% (95% CI 56.5-60.5) recorded a decreased anxiety. Females reported a higher likelihood of having decreased levels of anxiety than males (odds ratio = 1.78, 95% CI 1.48-2.14). Low negative attitudes score were associated with a higher decrease in anxiety (odds ratio = 1.59, 95% CI 1.33-1.89)., Conclusions: The attitudinal barriers to prevention of transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 are more prominent than physical prevention barriers after the peak of coronavirus disease 2019. Little is known regarding Chinese mothers' intention to vaccinate their daughters against human papillomavirus (HPV) since the HPV vaccine was approved for use in China in 2016. The aim was to explore maternal HPV vaccination acceptance, preference for 2-, 4- or 9-valent HPV vaccine and acceptance of domestically manufactured HPV vaccines. Study participants were mothers of primary school children in Southeastern region of Fujian. An online cross-sectional survey was undertaken between June and August 2019. Among the total of 3,586 completed responses (response rate 28.5%), the intention to vaccinate daughter against HPV was high (83.3%). Higher maternal education and perceived benefit and barriers were associated with greater intention to vaccinate. Among mothers who did not intend to vaccinate their daughters, the three most common reasons were daughter being too young to receive HPV vaccination (40.6%), fear of side effects (31.9%) and vaccine price is too high (16.0%). The largest proportion (41.4%) preferred their daughter to be vaccinated with the 9-valent HPV vaccine (9vHPV). Greater preference for 9vHPVwas strongly associated with higher maternal education level and annual household income. The majority of mothers expressed a preference for imported HPV vaccine (56.3%). Our result indicates that lower intentions to vaccinate daughters against HPV among less educated and lower-income mothers may lead to significant social inequalities in HPV vaccine uptake in the country.

Objective: To explore the association between compliance with quality indicators and hospitalisation expenses in patients with heart failure., Design: Generalised linear model and quantile regression model were used to examine the association between compliance with five quality indicators and hospitalisation expenses., Setting: Grade A hospital in Fujian Province, China., Participants: Data on 2568 heart failure admissions between 2010 and 2015 were analysed., Results: The median (IQR) of hospitalisation expenses of 2568 patients was ¥10.9 (¥6.9-¥31.6) thousand. The rates of compliance with five quality indicators were 90.3% for evaluation of left ventricular function, 43.8% for diuretics, 62.0% for ACE inhibitors (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), 67.4% for beta-blockers, and 58.9% for aldosterone receptor antagonists. After adjustment for gender, age, residence, method of payment, number of diseases before admission, number of diseases at admission, number of emergency treatments during hospital stay and length of stay, patients who received evaluation for left ventricular function, diuretics, or ACEI or ARB had lower hospitalisation expenses, and patients who received beta-blockers had higher hospitalisation expenses, compared with their counterparts in generalised linear models. Differences in hospitalisation expenses between compliance and non-compliance with quality indicators became larger across quantile levels of hospitalisation expenses, and were found to be statistically significant when quantile level exceeded 0.80 (¥39.7 thousand) in quantile regression models., Conclusions: The quality of care for patients with heart failure was below the target level. There was a negative relationship between compliance with quality indicators and hospitalisation expenses at the extreme quantile of expenses. Background: An extensive amount of information related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was disseminated by mass and social media in China. To date, there is limited evidence on how this infodemic may influence psychobehavioral responses to the crisis., Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the psychobehavioral responses to the COVID-19 outbreak and examine their associations with mass and social media exposure., Methods: A cross-sectional study among medical and health sciences students from the Fujian Medical University in Fuzhou, China, was conducted between April 6-22, 2020., Results: A total of 2086 completed responses were received. Multivariable analyses demonstrated that four constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM)-higher perception of susceptibility (odds ratio [OR] 1.44; 95% CI 1.07-1.94), severity (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.10-1.59), self-efficacy (OR 1.61; 95% CI 1.21-2.15), and perceived control or intention to carry out prevention measures (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.09-1.59)-were significantly associated with a higher mass media exposure score, whereas only three constructs-higher perception of severity (OR 1.43; 95% CI 1.19-1.72), self-efficacy (OR 1.85; 95% CI 1.38-2.48), and perceived control or intention to carry out prevention measures (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.08-1.58)-were significantly associated with a higher social media exposure score. Lower emotional consequences and barriers to carry out prevention measures were also significantly associated with greater mass and social media exposure. Our findings on anxiety levels revealed that 38.1% (n=795; 95% CI 36.0-40.2) of respondents reported moderate-to-severe anxiety. A lower anxiety level was significantly associated with higher mass and social media exposure in the univariable analyses; however, the associations were not significant in the multivariable analyses., Conclusions: In essence, both mass and social media are useful means of disseminating health messages and contribute to the betterment of psychobehavioral responses to COVID-19. Objectives: Sufficient knowledge and positive attitudes are crucial to the prevention of COVID-19. However, little is known about public awareness and attitudes regarding COVID-19 in China. The impact of COVID-19 on the societal well-being and anxiety levels of the public has never been documented. The aim of this study was to survey the knowledge, attitudes, impact, and anxiety levels of the people of China in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak. Method: A cross-sectional population survey using an online questionnaire was undertaken between Jan 24 and Feb 24, 2020. The study participants were residents of mainland China over the age of 18 years. The attitude items in this study measured the perceived threat of COVID-19 based on the Health Belief Model. Anxiety was measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), a self-reported questionnaire that measure both state (STAI-S), and trait anxiety (STAI-T) Results: A total of 2,446 completed responses were received. The mean and standard deviation (SD) for the total knowledge score was 20.3 ( SD ± 2.9) out of a possible score of 23. The social disruption and household economic impact were notable, particularly in provinces with higher cumulative confirmed cases. The majority of responses indicated a low perceived susceptibility of being infected (86.7% [95%CI 85.4-88.1]), with a fair proportion of respondents perceiving a higher severity (62.9% [95% CI 61.0-64.8]). The mean total impact score was 9.9 ( SD ± 3.8) out of a possible score of 15. The mean score for STAI-S was 48.7 ( SD ± 10.8), whereas the mean STAI-T score was 45.7 ( SD ± 8.5). By demographics, women reported significantly higher odds for higher levels of both STAI-S ( OR = 1.67) and STAI-T ( OR = 1.30) compared to men. People of a younger age were also more likely to experience higher STAI-S and STAI-T. Higher perceived susceptibility and severity and impact were strong predictors of higher levels of STAI-S and STAI-T. Conclusion: Our findings can assist in tailoring public communication to change people's knowledge and attitudes. The present study also underlined the importance of the promotion of mental health during infectious disease outbreaks to help in moderating the perceived threat, social and household economic impact, targeting the vulnerable segment of the population., (Copyright © 2020 Lin, Hu, Alias and Wong.)

Objective: To further explore risk factors of esophageal squamous cell cancer specific for different macroscopic types. Methods: A total of 423 patients and 423 age (±3 years) and gender matched controls were recruited. Multinomial logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the risk factors of ESCC specific for different macroscopic types. Results: In this study, we found that drinking hot tea (OR = 1.98, 95% CI:1.14-3.43) and higher intake of hard food (OR = 1.64, 95% CI:1.05-2.58) positively associated with ulcerative type of ESCC, but not with medullary type or other types. Although alcohol drinking and lower intake of fresh vegetable appeared to be more harmful to the ulcerative-type ESCC, the discrepant risks were not significantly different in ulcerative type and medullary type. Moreover, tobacco smoking, intake of hot food, spicy food, fresh fruit, scallion and garlic were related to ESCC risk, whereas no significant difference in magnitude of their associations with respect to macroscopic type was observed. Furthermore, significant multiplicative interaction between tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking was found in ulcerative-type and medullary-type ESCC. Conclusion: Drinking hot tea and higher intake of hard food were associated with increased risk of ulcerative type of ESCC. However, the mechanism for this difference needs to be further studied.

Objective: To elucidate the association between lifestyle and dietary factors and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma( ESCC) in three different sections of the esophagus., Methods: From January 2010 to December 2016, a hospital-based case-control study was conducted, and a total of 550 patients with ESCC and gender and age( ±3 age) frequency-matched 550 cancer-free control subjects were recruited in this study. Odds ratios( ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals( CIs) were calculated by using unconditional binary or multinomial logistic regression. Multiple correspondence analysis( MCA) was applied to illustrate the influence of the risk factors on different sections of the esophagus., Results: Tea drinking was associated with lower risk of upper( Ut) and lower thoracic( Lt) ESCC( OR = 0. 40, 95% CI 0. 22-0. 73; OR= 0. 50, 95% CI 0. 31-0. 81; for Ut and Lt, respectively), and lower intake of vegetables increased the risk of Ut and Lt ESCC( OR = 3. 93, 95% CI 1. 61-9. 61; OR =2. 68, 95% CI 1. 30-5. 53; for Ut and Lt, respectively). Intake of hot food, hard food and lower intake of fruits were associated with an elevated risk of the ESCC in all subsites( P<0. 05). The strength of association between drinking and ESCC was lower in middle thoracic( Mt) compared with the Lt ESCC( OR = 0. 58, 95% CI 0. 35-0. 98). Moreover, this reduction of association strength were also found in eating hot food( OR = 0. 45, 95%CI 0. 27-0. 76) and lower intake of vegetables( Ut OR = 0. 44, 95% CI 0. 20-0. 99). However, the association between lower intake of fruits and the Mt ESCC risk was stronger compared with Lt ESCC( OR = 1. 66, 95% CI 1. 08-2. 55). In additional, the association between lower intake of fruits and the Ut ESCC risk was stronger compared with Mt ESCC. Joint category plot of MCA also identified the heterogeneous associations between risk factors and different sections of the esophagus., Conclusion: Differences in risk factors of ESCC in different subsites, intake of hot food, hard food, and lower intake of vegetables were common risk factors for three subsites of ESCC.

Background: The incidence of cancer pain increases in discharged patients because of discontinued standard treatments and reductions in medication adherence. Motivated by the need for better pain management in discharged patients, we developed a mobile phone app (Pain Guard) to provide continuous treatment information and feedback to discharged cancer patients suffering from pain., Objective: The aim was to design, construct, and test the Pain Guard app in patients managing cancer pain, evaluate the total remission rate of pain and the improvement in quality of life (QoL) to improve pain management for cancer pain patients, and assess patient acceptance of the app., Methods: This randomized controlled double-arm study involved 58 patients with cancer pain symptoms. Participants were randomly assigned to a group receiving care through the Pain Guard app (n=31) or to a control group (n=27) who received only traditional pharmaceutical care. In a pretest, participants were rated using a baseline cancer pain assessment and QoL evaluation. During treatment, the consumption levels of analgesic drugs were recorded every week. After a 4-week study period, another round of cancer pain assessment and QoL evaluation was conducted. The system's usability, feasibility, app compliance, and satisfaction were also assessed. Our primary outcome was remission rate of pain, and secondary outcomes were medication adherence, improvements in QoL, frequency of breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP), incidence of adverse reactions, and satisfaction of patients., Results: All participants (N=58) successfully completed the study. There were no significant differences in baseline pain scores or baseline QoL scores between groups. At the end of the study, the rate of pain remission in the trial group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<.001). The frequency of BTcP in the app group was considerably lower than that in the control group (P<.001). The rate of medication adherence in the trial group was considerably higher than that in the control group (P<.001). Improvements in global QoL scores in the trial group were also significantly higher than those in the control group (P<.001). The incidence of adverse reactions in the trial group (7/31) was lower than that in the control group (12/27), especially constipation, with significant differences (P=.01). Aim: Physical activity plays an important role in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).However, the optimal intensity and dose of physical activity for the treatment of NAFLD have yet to be found. In the present study, we aimed to provide a dose-response association between physical activity and NAFLD in a Chinese population., Methods: We recruited 543 patients with NAFLD diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography, and 543 age-matched and sex-matched controls. The amount of physical activity, sedentary time and energy intake was collected through a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between physical activity and NAFLD., Results: After adjusting for hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, energy intake and sedentary time, the total amount of physical activity was found to be inversely associated with NAFLD in a dose-dependent manner in men (>3180 metabolic equivalent of energy [MET]-min/week vs ≤1440 MET-min/week: OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.91, p for trend=0.01). In addition, both moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity physical activity were effective in reducing the risk of NAFLD, independent of confounding variables in men (moderate-intensity physical activity: >684 MET-min/week vs none: OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.86, p for trend=0.01; vigorous-intensity physical activity: >960 MET-min/week vs none: OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.95, p for trend=0.02)., Conclusions: Physical activity was inversely associated with risk of NAFLD in a dose-dependent manner in men. Objective: To evaluate the independent and joint effects of FADS1 polymorphism and fish oil intake on oral squamous cell carcinoma( OSCC)., Methods: A case-control study was conducted with 259 newly diagnosed primary OSCC patients and538 controls frequency-matched by sex and age in Fujian from September 2010 to September 2014. Data on demographics and dietary habits such as marine fish oil intake were collected using a structure questionnaire. FADS1 rs174549 genotype was determined using Taq Man genotyping assays. Unconditional logistic regression was used to the oddsratios( ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals( CI) of FADS1 polymorphism and fish oil intake for OSCC., Results: FADS1 rs174549 AA genotype was associated with decreased risk of OSCC( codominant model: OR = 0. 53, 95% CI 0. 33-0. 85; recessive model: OR = 0. 57, 95% CI 0. 38-0. 87). Compared with those who non-intake marine fish oil, regularly intake of marine fish oil decreased the risk of OSCC( OR = 0. 54, 95%CI: 0. 32-0. 91). Moreover, a multiplicative interaction between FADS1 rs174549 polymorphism and marine fish oil intake for oral cancer( OR&#95;(multiplicative)= 0. 31, 95% CI0. 11-0. 87)., Conclusion: FADS1 rs174549 polymorphism and marine fish oil intake may be independent protective factors for OSCC with a gene-diet multiplicative interaction.

The transcription factor sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) is a key regulator of lipogenesis and insulin sensitivity, and is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here, we assessed the impact of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in SREBF-1c on NAFLD susceptibility and associated metabolic phenotypes in a Han Chinese population. Four common SNPs (rs62064119, rs2297508, rs11868035 and rs13306741) in the SREBP-1c gene were selected and genotyped in 593 patients with NAFLD and 593 healthy controls. Unconditional logistic regression was performed to assess the risk of NAFLD by determining odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). No significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies of these four SNPs were found between the NAFLD population and the controls (all P > 0.05). In addition, we did not find any association between the SREBF-1c SNPs and the clinical and biochemical parameters, such as body mass index, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol or systolic and diastolic blood pressure, except that the rs2297508 C-allele or rs11868035 G-allele showed significant associations with lower triglyceride levels in control subjects (P < 0.01). Our findings suggested that the four polymorphisms in SREBF-1c gene are not associated with risk of NAFLD in the Chinese Han population.

Purpose: To evaluate the confounding effects of passive smoking and COF exposure on association between tea and oral cancer in Chinese women., Methods: A case-control study including 207 female oral cancer cases and 480 age-matched controls was performed in Fujian, China. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire by face-to-face interviews. The effects of tea consumption on oral cancer were, respectively, adjusted for Model-1 and Model-2 using logistic regression analysis. Model-1 did not adjusted for passive smoking and COF; Model-2 included the variables in Model-1, passive smoking and COF., Results: Tea consumption was associated with a decreased risk of oral cancer in females: The OR was 0.498 (95 % CI 0.312-0.795) for Model-1 and 0.565 (95 % CI 0.352-0.907) for Model-2. The ORs for all the categories of tea consumption estimated by Model-2 were slightly higher than Model-1. When stratified by passive smoking, the statistically significant association between tea drinking and oral cancer was only emerged in non-passive smoking women. Stratification by COF found tea drinking was still associated with a decreased risk of oral cancer for women who have light-COF exposure, but an increased risk for those who subjected to heavy exposure. A negative, multiplicative interaction was found between tea consumption and COF exposure for oral cancer, but not found between tea consumption and passive smoking., Conclusions: Tea consumption reduces the risk of oral cancer in Chinese women, but this effect is modified by the carcinogenic effects of passive smoking and COF exposure.
