Objectives: The prognostic value of preimplantation nutritional status is not yet known for older diabetic patients that received right ventricular pacing (RVP). The study aimed to investigate the clinical value of the four malnutrition screening tools for the prediction of heart failure hospitalization (HFH) in older diabetic patients that received RVP. Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting and Participants: This study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2018 at the Fuwai Hospital, Beijing, China, and included older (age ≥ 65 years) diabetic patients that received RVP for the first time Measurements: The Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), Naples Prognostic Score (NPS), and the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score were used to estimate the preimplantation nutritional status of the patients. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between preimplantation malnutrition and HFH. Results: Overall, 231 older diabetic patients receiving RVP were included. The median follow-up period after RVP was 53 months. HFH was reported for 19.9% of the included patients. Our results showed preimplantation malnutrition for 18.2%, 15.2%, 86.6% and 66.2% of the included patients based on the PNI, GNRI, NPS, and CONUT score, respectively. The cumulative rate of HFH during follow-up period was significantly higher for patients in the preimplantation malnutrition group based on the PNI (log-rank = 13.0, P = 0.001), GNRI (log-rank = 8.5, P = 0.01), and NPS (log-rank = 15.7, P < 0.001) compared to the normal nutrition group, but was not statistically significant for those in the preimplantation malnutrition group based on the CONUT score (log-rank = 2.7, P = 0.3). As continuous variables, all the nutritional indices showed significant correlation with HFH (all P < 0.05). However, multivariate analysis showed that only GNRI was independently associated with HFH (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.937–0.997, P = 0.032). As categorical variables, PNI, GNRI, and NPS showed significant correlation with HFH. After adjustment of confounding factors, moderate-to-severe degree of malnutrition was an independent predictor of HFH based on the PNI (HR = 4.66, 95% CI: 1.03-21.00, P = 0.045) and GNRI (HR = 3.02, 95% CI: 1.02-9.00, P = 0.047). Conclusion: Preimplantation malnutrition was highly prevalent in older diabetic patients that received RVP. Background: Many countries have introduced reforms with the aim of primary care transformation (PCT). Common objectives include meeting service delivery challenges associated with ageing populations and health inequalities. To date, there has been little research comparing PCT internationally. Our aim was to examine PCT and new models of primary care by conducting a systematic scoping review of international literature in order to describe major policy changes including key 'components', impacts of new models of care, and barriers and facilitators to PCT implementation. Methods: We undertook a systematic scoping review of international literature on PCT in OECD countries and China (published protocol: https://osf.io/2afym). Ovid [MEDLINE/Embase/Global Health], CINAHL Plus, and Global Index Medicus were searched (01/01/10 to 28/08/21). Two reviewers independently screened the titles and abstracts with data extraction by a single reviewer. A narrative synthesis of findings followed. Results: A total of 107 studies from 15 countries were included. The most frequently employed component of PCT was the expansion of multidisciplinary teams (MDT) (46% of studies). The most frequently measured outcome was GP views (27%), with < 20% measuring patient views or satisfaction. Only three studies evaluated the effects of PCT on ageing populations and 34 (32%) on health inequalities with ambiguous results. For the latter, PCT involving increased primary care access showed positive impacts whilst no benefits were reported for other components. Analysis of 41 studies citing barriers or facilitators to PCT implementation identified leadership, change, resources, and targets as key themes. Conclusions: Countries identified in this review have used a range of approaches to PCT with marked heterogeneity in methods of evaluation and mixed findings on impacts. Only a minority of studies described the impacts of PCT on ageing populations, health inequalities, or from the patient perspective. A heavy nocturnal warm sector rainfall occurred over the western coastal region of South China in June 2020, of which the precipitation magnitude was seriously underestimated by the operational TRAMS (Tropical Regional Atmosphere Model System) model. In this study, by improving the configuration of initial conditions (ICs) and lateral boundary conditions (LBCs) in offline nesting, the simulation of the convection initiation (CI) process can be well improved. The CI simulation is found to be sensitive to the vertical resolution in ICs in this case. When the low‐level vertical resolution of ICs is increased, the nocturnal near‐surface cold layer caused by inland mountains can be resolved better, which is necessary to form the convergence line along the coastline. Another important impact of increasing the vertical resolution of ICs is the successful simulation of horizontal convective rolls (HCRs) over the northern South China Sea. The HCRs apparently increase the depth of the warm‐moist marine boundary layer jet (MBLJ), and finally lead to the CI along the coastline. The increased vertical resolutions of LBCs can reduce the discontinuity of simulated moist tongue across the southern lateral boundary of the TRAMS model, which provides more moisture for the warm sector rainfall through MBLJ. LBCs with Higher temporal frequency help to alleviate the western position bias of rain belt by reducing the temporal interpolation error. Our study highlights the importance of finer ICs and LBCs in offline nesting for regional operational NWP systems in the South China region. Plain Language Summary: Warm‐sector heavy rainfall in South China usually develops under weakly forced weather condition, numerical forecasting of its initiation and intensification process is a difficult problem. To investigate its sensitivity to the configuration of initial conditions (ICs) and lateral boundary conditions (LBCs), a simulation study is carried out for a nocturnal warm sector rainfall event happened in western Guangdong. The sandy land of Poyang Lake is a typical area of subtropical sandy land in southern China. Its ecological management and restoration are of great significance to the construction of regional ecological civilization. To clarify the dynamic process of aboveground biomass and volume of Pinus elliottii plantation in different desertification lands from 2009 to 2018, field investigation and model estimation were used. The results show the following: (1) The growth process of the aboveground biomass and volume of P. elliottii presented a trend from slow-to-fast, after nine years, the aboveground biomass in the light desertification area (72.3 t·hm-2) was higher than that in the moderate (18.21 t·hm-2) and the severe desertification area (11.67 t·hm-2). (2) The proportion of the total biomass of P. elliottii trunk biomass is increasing, the proportion of branches biomass is decreasing, and the proportion of leaves biomass is basically stable. (3) The diameter breast height, tree height, and biomass of each organ were significantly correlated with volume (P<0.01). After nine years, the volume of P. elliottii in the light desertification area (101.53 m³·hm-2) was significantly higher than that in the moderate (21.37 m³·hm-2) and the severe desertification area (14.84 m³·hm-2). The lower the degree of desertification, the better the vegetation recovery was. Objectives: Malnutrition is associated with increased incidence of heart failure (HF). Left ventricular (LV) remodeling is one of the most important processes in the occurrence and evolution of HF. However, the association between nutritional status and LV remodeling is not well known. The study aimed to investigate the association between malnutrition and LV remodeling. Design: The study was a retrospective observation study. Setting and Participants: We included patients from the registry of Cardiorenal Improvement study from January 2007 to December 2018 at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. Measurements: The primary endpoint was LV remodeling, defined as an absolute decrease in LV ejection fraction ≥10% after discharge compared with baseline. Nutritional status was assessed by the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score. Eligible patients were divided into absent-mild malnutrition group (CONUT score ≤4) and moderate-severe malnutrition group (CONUT score >4). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression was performed to verify the association between malnutrition and left ventricular remodeling. Results: A total of 7,217 patients (mean age 61.3±10.5 years, 71.7% male) were included in the final analysis, among which 712 (9.9%) had LV remodeling. The incidence of LV remodeling in moderate-severe malnutrition group was significantly higher than that in absent-mild malnutrition group (12.9% vs. 9.5%, p=0.002). In multivariable logistic regression, moderate-severe malnutrition group was significantly associated with 1.69-fold increased risk of LV remodeling after adjusting confounders (OR: 1.69, CI: 1.32–2.16). Similar results were observed in subgroup stratified by age, gender, and coronary artery disease. Conclusion: Nearly one eighth of patients were classified as moderate-severe malnutrition, 12% of whom had LV remodeling. Moderate-severe malnutrition was associated with 69% increased risk of LV remodeling. A novel dsRNA virus was identified by high-throughput sequencing from tea oil trees in China. Its complete genome of 4714 bp contains two open reading frames (ORFs). ORF1 encodes a putative coat protein (CP) of 702 amino acids (aa), and ORF2 codes for an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of 855 aa. The virus shares the highest aa sequence identity of 45.21% in RdRp with taro-associated totivirus L (MN_119621), a member of the genus Totivirus in the family Totiviridae. Phylogenetic analysis of the aa sequences of the RdRp places the new virus in a group with other totiviruses, suggesting that this virus, which is provisionally named "tea-oil camellia-associated totivirus 1", should be considered a member of the genus Totivirus. In the past 40 years after China adopted the reform and open-up policy, China’s expediting industries spatial agglomeration has resulted in severe damage to the environment. In China, the one whether the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) is true or not is the hot issue under the research of academic circles. By establishing the mechanism model of industries spatial agglomeration and environmental pollution in this paper, we discovered upon our empirical study that China’s industrial spatial agglomeration process had apparent threshold characteristics for environmental pollution, those direct investment and scientific innovation of foreign merchants apparently improved environmental pollution, so PHH is not true in China and such conclusion provides empirical support for China’s industrial agglomeration and environmental policymaking. Objective: To assess whether vaginal secretions and breast milk of women with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) contain severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).Design: Single centre cohort study.Setting: Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, Hubei province, China.Population: We studied 13 SARS-CoV-2-infected pregnant women diagnosed between 31 January and 9 March 2020.Methods: We collected clinical data, vaginal secretions, stool specimens and breast milk from SARS-CoV-2-infected women during different stages of pregnancy and collected neonatal throat and anal swabs.Main Outcomes and Measures: We assessed viral presence in different biosamples.Results: Of the 13 women with COVID-19, five were in their first trimester, three in their second trimester and five in their third trimester. Of the five women in their third trimester who gave birth, all delivered live newborns. Among these five deliveries, the primary adverse perinatal outcomes included premature delivery (n = 2) and neonatal pneumonia (n = 2). One of nine stool samples was positive; all 13 vaginal secretion samples, and five throat swabs and four anal swabs collected from neonates, were negative for the novel coronavirus. However, one of three samples of breast milk was positive by viral nucleic acid testing.Conclusions: In this case series of 13 pregnant women with COVID-19, we observed negative viral test results in vaginal secretion specimens, suggesting that a vaginal delivery may be a safe delivery option. Objective: To analyze the non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for aneuploidy results of 31 515 singleton pregnancies in Fujian province, southeastern China, and assess its performance in low-, moderate- and high-risk pregnancies.Methods: Women were categorized into groups according to whether their risk for fetal abnormality was low, moderate or high. Cell-free plasma DNA extracted from peripheral blood samples was subjected to low-coverage whole-genome sequencing. Standard Z-score analysis of the mapped sequencing reads was used to identify fetal aneuploidy, including the three main trisomies (T21, T18 and T13) and sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA). NIPT-positive results were confirmed by amniocentesis and karyotyping. The performance of NIPT for detection of T21, T18, T13 and SCA was assessed by calculating the sensitivity and specificity.Results: The rate of chromosomal abnormality detected by NIPT in the study population was 1.38%. A higher rate of chromosomal abnormality was found in the high-risk group (1.57%) compared to the moderate-risk (1.05%) and low-risk (1.18%) groups (P < 0.05). Sensitivity and specificity, respectively, were 98.96% (95/96) and 99.94% (31 274/31 292) for detection of T21, 100% (25/25) and 99.96% (31 352/31 363) for T18, 100% (7/7) and 99.97% (31 373/31 381) for T13 and 100% (61/61) and 99.74% (31 245/31 327) for SCA. Positive predictive values were high for T21 (84.07%) and T18 (69.44%) and moderate for T13 (46.67%) and SCA (42.66%).Conclusion: Our findings support the application of NIPT for reliable and accurate testing of the general population of reproductive-age women for clinically significant fetal aneuploidy. Forests play a major role in the regional and global carbon cycle. Climate change events have become serious issue, forests from various geographical regions have different sensitivities to climate variation. Therefore, we examine the effect of annual precipitation and annual temperature from 1950-2016 of white birch (Betula platyphylla) stem biomass and composition in Daxing'anling Mountain Inner Mongolia China. We conduct a field survey, a total of 27 plots were established as the research area. In this study, we used allometric equation including the following components: diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree height (H). Our result showed that the response of Betula platyphylla stem biomass has a strong correlation with annual precipitation (R2 = 0.80), and with temperature (R2 = 0.75). A positive correlation was found for height with annual precipitation (R2 = 0.76) and annual temperature (R2 = 0.51). Additionally, a slightly positive correlation was observed for density with annual precipitation (R2 = 0.26) and annual temperature (R2 = 0.20). Our results also predicted that competition for survival played a significant role in tree growth. To achieve fast tree growth and high stem biomass response, systematically based forest management strategies, including thinning operation and selective cuttings could be established even under harsh Mongolian weather conditions. The back-streaming neutrons (back-n) is a white neutron experimental facility at the China spallation neutron source (CSNS). The time structure of the primary proton beam makes it fully applicable to use the time-of-flight (TOF) method for neutron energy measuring. We implemented the electronics of TOF measurement on the general-purpose readout electronics designed for all the seven detectors in back-n. The electronics are based on the peripheral component interconnect express eXtensions for instrumentation (PXIe) platform, which is composed of field digitizer modules (FDM), trigger and clock modules (TCM), and signal conditioning modules. The T0 signal synchronous to the CSNS accelerator represents the neutron emission from the target. It is the start of the time stamp. The TCM receives, synchronizes, and distributes the T0 signal to each FDM based on the PXIe backplane bus. Meanwhile, the detector signals, after being conditioned, are fed into FDMs for waveform digitizing. The first sample point of the signal waveform is the stop of the time stamp. According to the time stamp and the time of the signal over the threshold, the total TOF can be obtained. The time-to-digital converter (TDC) based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is implemented on the TCM to accurately acquire the time interval between the asynchronous T0 signal and the global synchronous clock phase. There is also an FPGA-based TDC on the FDM to accurately acquire the time interval between the T0 signal arriving at the FDM and the first sample point of the signal waveform. The over-threshold time of signal is obtained offline. This method for TOF measurement is efficient and not needed for additional modules. Artificial upwelling, artificially pumping up nutrient-rich ocean waters from deep to surface, is increasingly applied to stimulating phytoplankton activity. As a proxy for the amount of phytoplankton present in the ocean, the concentration of chlorophyll a (chl-a) may be influenced by water physical factors altered in artificial upwelling processes. However, the accuracy and convenience of measuring chl-a are limited by present technologies and equipment. Our research intends to study the correlations between chl-a concentration and five water physical factors, i.e., salinity, temperature, depth, dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH, possibly affected by artificial upwelling. In this paper, seven models are presented to predict chl-a concentration, respectively. Two of them are based on traditional regression algorithms, i.e., multiple linear regression (MLR) and multivariate quadratic regression (MQR), while five are based on intelligent algorithms, i.e., backpropagation-neural network (BP-NN), extreme learning machine (ELM), genetic algorithm-ELM (GA-ELM), particle swarm optimization-ELM (PSO-ELM), and ant colony optimization-ELM (ACO-ELM). These models provide a quick prediction to study the concentration of chl-a. With the experimental data collected from Xinanjiang Experiment Station in China, the results show that chl-a concentration has a strong correlation with salinity, temperature, DO, and pH in the process of artificial upwelling and PSO-ELM has the best overall prediction ability. Based on the data on the Chinese industrial sector in 2009~2015, this paper empirically analyses the effect of research and development (R&D) subsidy on energy consumption and energy structure of the industry in China. The research results show that the R&D subsidy slowed down the growth of the total energy consumption in the Chinese industrial sector and promoted the optimization of the energy structure in the short term. On this basis, the author investigated how these impacts varied within so called pollution departments. The investigation reveals a significant impact of R&D subsidy in high-pollution departments: the subsidy greatly suppressed the energy consumption and optimized the energy structure of these departments; for low-pollution departments, the R&D subsidy had no major impacts on energy consumption or energy structure. Objectives: To investigate the mortality and causes of death in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods: We collected the clinical data of all consecutive adult systemic lupus erythematosus patients at the Rheumatology department of Peking University First Hospital between January 2007 and December 2015. The primary causes of death were identified, the standardized mortality ratio and years of life lost were calculated, and the survival and variables associated with mortality were determined by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis respectively. Results: The mean age of all 911 patients (814 females and 97 males) was 37.8±14.7 years, the median disease duration at recruitment was 2.6 (0.5-7.0) years, and the median follow-up duration was 3.0 (1.4-5.1) years. Among the 911 patients who were successfully followed up, 45 patients died. Infection (31.1%) was the leading cause of death followed by renal failure, pulmonary arterial hypertension and cerebrovascular diseases. The overall age and sex-adjusted standardized mortality ratio was 3.2 (95% confidence interval 2.4-4.0), and the years of life lost for women and men were 29.8 and 9.4 respectively. Overall survival at 1, 5 and 10 years was 98.2%, 95.3% and 93.7% respectively. Older age at disease onset, infection, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and pulmonary arterial hypertension were independent risk factors for the mortality of systemic lupus erythematosus patients, and longer disease duration at recruitment was an independent protective factor. Conclusions: Mortality of systemic lupus erythematosus patients in China was substantial, especially in females, with infection the leading cause of death. Objectives: Previous studies found that tea consumption was related to a reduction in the risks of some chronic diseases, but limited data are available on bone health. This study aimed to examine the associations of tea consumption with hip bone strength in Chinese women.Design: Cross-sectional study.Setting: The participants were from the ongoing Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study. This was a cohort study started in 2008. The examination data conducted between June 2010 and December 2013 were used.Participants: A total of 1,495 Chinese women aged more than 40 years were included.Measurements: Tea consumption, sociodemographic information and lifestyle habits were collected by a face-to-face questionnaire. Hip bone mineral density (BMD) and geometric parameters, i.e. cross-sectional area (CSA), section modulus (Z) and buckling ratio (BR), were generated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The associations of tea consumption with bone phenotypes were detected by analysis of covariance and multiple linear regression models after adjusting for age, body mass index, years since menopause, physical activity, dietary-protein intake, dietary-calcium intake, calcium tablet intake, drinking status and smoking status.Results: Tea drinkers (n = 732) had approximately 1.9% higher BMD (p < 0.05) and 3.6% lower BR (p < 0.05) than non-tea drinkers (n = 763). The dose-response relationships of BMD, BR or CSA with total tea consumption were identified (p-trend < 0.05). Tea drinking was found to be a significant and independent predictor of BMD (β = 0.068, p < 0.05) or BR (β = -0.079, p < 0.05).Conclusion: Tea consumption was associated with increased bone strength in middle-aged and elderly Chinese women. Background/objectives: Glomerular hyperfiltration has been considered an early marker of kidney injury in prediabetes and prehypertension. Heavy alcohol consumption remains highly prevalent and is considered a major public health problem worldwide. The degree of glomerular hyperfiltration associated with alcohol consumption remains unclear.Subjects/methods: This study was conducted in three communities in China. A total of 15 390 participants (5396 males and 9994 females) aged 40-65 years were included in the study. Glomerular hyperfiltration was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate >97.5th percentile value of the total population.Results: Current drinkers had a 1.51 times higher risk for developing renal hyperfiltration (RHF) as compared with never drinkers, adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking status, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, physical activity and the levels of fasting glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. Furthermore, heavy alcohol consumption of >210 g per week was associated with an elevated risk for RHF in a dose-dependent manner among male current drinkers.Conclusions: In middle-aged Chinese men, heavy alcohol intake was associated with an elevated risk for RHF. China is a country that experiences a large number of disasters. The number of deaths caused by large-scale disasters and accidents in past 10 years is around 900,000. More than 92.8 percent of these deaths could be avoided if there were an effective pre-warning system deployed. Knowledge of the information dissemination characteristics of different information media taking into consideration governmental assistance (information published by a government) in disasters in urban areas, plays a critical role in increasing response time and reducing the number of deaths and economic losses. In this paper we have developed a comprehensive information dissemination model to optimize efficiency of pre-warning mechanics. This model also can be used for disseminating information for evacuees making real-time evacuation plans. We analyzed every single information dissemination models for pre-warning in disasters by considering 14 media: short message service (SMS), phone, television, radio, news portals, Wechat, microblogs, email, newspapers, loudspeaker vehicles, loudspeakers, oral communication, and passive information acquisition via visual and auditory senses. Since governmental assistance is very useful in a disaster, we calculated the sensitivity of governmental assistance ratio. The exploitation of coal resources has resulted in a series of ecological and environmental problems. The aim of this study was to determine the pollution characteristics of the river-soil-vegetation system in the Kaili coal mining region. By analysing the heavy metal content of samples from water, soil, and plants along a section of the Chongan River channel downstream from the coal mining region, this research shows that a number of wastewater quality indices have already exceeded the Secondary Chinese Discharge Standards. The soil in the mining region has been slightly polluted by Zn and seriously polluted by Hg. Moreover, it is shown that all plant samples such as Pteris vittata L., rice seedlings, and vegetables, such as capsicum, cucumber, kidney bean, tomato, and eggplant, have been affected by coal mine wastewater. These results demonstrated that the upper reaches of the Chongan River have been seriously polluted by coal mine wastewater, and as such need imminent environmental management. What is known and objective: Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) is a polymorphic enzyme that is responsible for clearing approximately 15% of clinically important drugs. The objective of this study was to assess the catalytic characteristics of 39 CYP2C9 isoforms found in the Chinese population and their effects on the metabolism of the model substrate fluoxetine in vitro. Methods: Baculovirus-mediated expressing system was used to highly express wild-type and the 38 CYP2C9 allelic variants in insect cell microsomes. Then, the enzymatic characteristics of each variant were evaluated using fluoxetine as the substrate. Reactions were performed at 37 °C with the insect microsomes and 10-200 lM fluoxetine for 60 min. After termination, the products were precipitated and used for signal collection by UPLC-MS/MS. Results and discussion: Of the 39 tested CYP2C9 isoforms, only four variants (CYP2C9*3, CYP2C9*27, CYP2C9*34 and CYP2C9*37) exhibited similar relative clearance values to that of the wild-type CYP2C9*1. Moreover, five variants (CYP2C9*14, CYP2C9*36, CYP2C9*45, CYP2C9*48 and CYP2C9*55) showed a higher intrinsic clearance value than the wild-type protein, whereas the remaining 29 CYP2C9 isoforms exhibited significantly decreased clearance values (from 623% to 8774%) compared to CYP2C9*1. In addition, 28 CYP2C9 isoforms including CYP2C9*3 exhibited a trend towards substrate inhibition for fluoxetine. What is new and conclusion: This study provides the most comprehensive data on the enzymatic activities associated with all reported CYP2C9 variants in the Chinese population with regard to the widely used antidepressant drug, fluoxetine. Flash floods have occurred frequently in the urban areas of southern China. An effective process-oriented urban flood inundation model is urgently needed for urban storm-water and emergency management. This study develops an efficient and flexible cellular automaton (CA) model to simulate storm-water runoff and the flood inundation process during extreme storm events. The process of infiltration, inlets discharge and flow dynamics can be simulated with little preprocessing on commonly available basic urban geographic data. In this model, a set of gravitational diverging rules are implemented to govern the water flow in a rectangular template of three cells by three cells of a raster layer. The model is calibrated by one storm event and validated by another in a small urban catchment in Guangzhou of southern China. The depth of accumulated water at the catchment outlet is interpreted from street-monitoring closed-circuit television (CCTV) videos and verified by on-site survey. A good level of agreement between the simulated process and the reality is reached for both storm events. The model reproduces the changing extent and depth of flooded areas at the catchment outlet with an accuracy of 4 cm in water depth. Comparisons with a physically based 2-D model (FloodMap) show that the model is capable of effectively simulating flow dynamics. The invasion of Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Ambrosia trifida from their native range to occupy large areas in China has raised considerable concern. Using the maximum entropy ( Maxent) method, we developed models for each Ambrosia species, based on occurrence records from both native ranges ( North America) and their invaded ranges (e.g. northern and south-western Europe) to predict the availability and distribution of suitable habitats for these two species in China. For each species, we also assessed potential shifts in habitat suitability for the year 2050, using three general circulation models ( GCMs) and two emission scenarios. Elevation and average mean precipitation in October contributed most to model development for both species. Potential distribution projections under future climatic change scenarios suggested an averaged percentage of suitable area (2.21%) and habitat gain (1.49%) in A. artemisiifolia distribution, with further expansion to environmentally favourable locations in south-east coastal regions, northern Taiwan and the Beijing- Tianjin- Tangshan area in northern China. Future predicted percentage of suitable area for A. trifida was 0.03% with a very limited suitable habitat gain of <1% although this species had the potential to continue to spread in northern China. Our findings suggest that management priorities should be focused on A. artemisiifolia, whilst effective control strategies for A. trifida may be optimised by concentrating efforts on those relatively fewer regions of China where the species is currently abundant. Purpose: To investigate the linezolid (LZD) treatment outcome and correlation between in vitro susceptibility to LZD and clinical outcome. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of tuberculosis (TB) patients who received treatment with linezolid between March 2012 and February 2013. Results: A total of 43 extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB patients identified by drug susceptibility testing were enrolled in this study, including 15 (34.9 %) received LZD as part of individualized treatment regimens. Among the 43 XDR TB patients, 15 patients (34.9 %) obtained favorable clinical outcome, including 9 (60.0 %) from LZD group and 6 (21.4 %) from control group without LZD. Statistical analysis revealed that the percentage of favorable outcomes of LZD group was significantly higher than that of control group ( P = 0.011). Furthermore, we analyzed the LZD minimum inhibitory concentrations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates from patients in LZD group and identified 4 (26.7 %) resistant to LZD. All of the patients with LZD resistance harbored adverse clinical outcome, while most of the patients infected with LZD sensitive MTB harbored favorable clinical outcome (81.8 %, 9/11). Statistical analysis revealed that the percentage of favorable outcome among the patients with LZD resistance was statistically lower than that among the LZD susceptible group ( P = 0.011). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that linezolid has efficacy against XDR pulmonary TB patients, even in shorter duration of administration. ABSTRACT Impacts of land use and climate change on runoff were investigated by studying the runoff in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin, China. Trends in precipitation, mean air temperature, and runoff were analysed by non-parametric Mann-Kendall tests. Land-use changes were examined with land-use transition matrix and geographic information system tools. Land-use and climate changes showed several characteristics, including increased reforestation, decreased grassland, retreat of glaciers and increased desertification. Human activity caused great impact, especially within densely populated regions and cities. Reforestation and degradation of grasslands were more frequent than deforestation and cultivation of grasslands. Annual mean air temperature, precipitation and runoff showed increasing trends between 1974 and 2000. The impacts of land use and climate change on runoff had different effects depending on region and season. In the season of freezing, climate change clearly affected runoff within regions that experienced precipitation. Altered evapotranspiration accounted for about 80 per cent of runoff changes, whereas land-use changes appear to have had greatest impact on runoff changes within regions that have inconsistent relationships between runoff and climate change. It was demonstrated that afforestation leads to increased runoff in dry seasons. It was estimated that glacier snow melt has caused annual runoff to increase at least 6·0 mm/10yr, 2·1 mm/10yr and 1·7 mm/10yr in Regions 1, 3 and 4, respectively, whereas evapotranspiration caused annual runoff to decrease at least 7·4 mm/10yr in Region 2. A high O3 episode was detected in urban Shanghai, a typical city in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in August 2010. The CMAQ integrated process rate method is applied to account for the contribution of different atmospheric processes during the high pollution episode. The analysis shows that the maximum concentration of ozone occurs due to transport phenomena, including vertical diffusion and horizontal advective transport. Gas-phase chemistry producing O3 mainly occurs at the height of 300-1500 m, causing a strong vertical O3 transport from upper levels to the surface layer. The gas-phase chemistry is an important sink for O3 in the surface layer, coupled with dry deposition. Cloud processes may contribute slightly to the increase of O3 due to convective clouds or to the decrease of O3 due to scavenging. The horizontal diffusion and heterogeneous chemistry contributions are negligible during the whole episode. Modeling results show that the O3 pollution characteristics among the different cities in the YRD region have both similarities and differences. During the buildup period, the O3 starts to appear in the city regions of the YRD and is then transported to the surrounding areas under the prevailing wind conditions. The O3 production from photochemical reaction in Shanghai and the surrounding area is most significant, due to the high emission intensity in the large city; this ozone is then transported out to sea by the westerly wind flow, and later diffuses to rural areas like Chongming island,Wuxi and even to Nanjing. The O3 concentrations start to decrease in the cities after sunset, due to titration of the NO emissions, but ozone can still be transported and maintain a significant concentration in rural areas and even regions outside the YRD region, where the NO emissions are very small. Abstract: Simultaneous measurements of atmospheric organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were made at four sampling sites, namely Guangzhou (GZ), Zhaoqing (ZQ), PolyU Campus (PU) and Hok Tsui (HT), in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region between 14 August 2006 and 28 August 2007. The highest concentrations of total carbon (TC) were found at the medium-scale roadside site (PU) and the lowest were found at the regional-scale site (HT). Among the four sampling sites, the average WSOC at ZQ showed the highest concentrations, while the lowest were seen at HT. OC and EC concentrations revealed spring/summer minima and autumn/winter maxima at all sites except PU, which had a consistently high EC concentration all over the year. The highest WSOC/OC ratio was found at ZQ with an average of 0.41, suggesting that the OC was more oxidized in the atmosphere of the semi-rural site. The lowest WSOC/OC was found at the roadside site of PU. Moreover, the WSOC/OC ratio increased in autumn, when the photochemical reactions are the most active in the PRD region. This can be attributed to aging and atmospheric processing of the organic compounds during their transportation, or to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Average annual secondary organic carbon (SOC) concentrations in PM2.5 were estimated to be 2.2 and 3.5μgm−3 for GZ and ZQ, comprising 33.5% and 42.8% of the corresponding OC concentrations, respectively. Based on the interactions among car, bicycle and pedestrian, we in this paper present a bicycle-following model and a pedestrian-following model with the consideration of the honk effects. Using the relationship between the micro and macro variables, we obtain a macro model for bicycle flow and pedestrian flow. Peak bone mass is an important factor influencing the occurrence of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture in adulthood. We measured the areal bone mineral density (BMD) in a Chinese male infantry recruit group ranging in age from 17 to 23 years and subsequently assessed peak BMD at the lumbar vertebrae and hip. This study included 812 Chinese men of Han ethnicity from 11 provinces and municipalities of China. The BMD, bone mineral content and the bone area of the lumbar vertebrae (L1-4), left femoral neck and total hip were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Height, weight, waist and hip circumference were also measured at the same time. BMD at the lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck and total hip reached a plateau at 22 years of age. The peak value of BMD at these 3 sites was 1.209 ± 0.175, 1.098 ± 0.177 and 1.122 ± 0.151 (g/cm2 ), respectively. Stepwise regression analysis showed that age and weight most contributed to the variance in BMD (P < 0.001). The average age when reaching peak BMD in this study is earlier than the ages reported in previous studies, and the value of peak BMD is higher than that reported previously in Chinese males. Objectives/Aims: We investigated the incidence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency in Chinese population. Background: The frequency of IgA deficiency, defined as a serum IgA level of <0·05 mg dL−1, has been broadly studied in different ethnic groups. Individuals with IgA deficiency may form specific antibodies against IgA, which can cause an anaphylactic response when the patient receives an IgA-containing blood transfusion. Methods: A sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to screen for IgA deficiency and particle gel immunoassay used for confirmation. IgA antibodies were further detected by the DiaMed anti-IgA test in IgA-deficient blood donors. Results: Of the total 22 609 healthy blood donors screened, only seven cases were confirmed as having IgA deficiency (<0·05 mg dL−1). Another seven cases displayed relative IgA deficiencies, with mean IgA concentrations ranging from 0·39 to 3·70 mg dL−1. Anti-IgA was identified in 2 of the 14 IgA-deficient blood donors whose IgA levels were <5 mg dL−1. Estimation of the theoretical risk for IgA anaphylactic transfusion reaction was 0·009%. Conclusion: The prevalence of IgA deficiency in Chinese is low. However, potential risks exist in performing blood transfusion to IgA-deficient persons, and measures should be taken to reduce IgA anaphylaxis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective It has been suggested that serum γ-glutamyltransferase is independently associated with cardiovascular mortality and atherosclerosis. The present study is to investigate the relationship between serum γ-glutamyltransferase and potential associated damage in an adult She Chinese population. Method A multistage, stratified, cluster, random sampling method was used to select an ethnically representative group of individuals aged 20-80 years in the general population. Brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity was used to assess arterial stiffness in the general population and the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System was used to detect diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy among populations with diabetes. Results A total of 5385 subjects were entered into the analysis. Serum γ-glutamyltransferase levels were classified into four groups using the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles as cut points (males: < 20, 20-29, 29-52 and > 52 U/ l; females: < 13, 13-18, 18-25 and > 25 U/ l). As compared with the first quartile, the relative risks of arterial stiffness were 1.418, 1.667 and 2.394 in the other three categories, respectively (test for trend P < 0.05). After adjustment in five models, serum γ-glutamyltransferase was still a risk factor of arterial stiffness. We found inverted U-shape curves in both genders and the third quartile (male: 29 52 U/ l; female: 18-25 U/ l) had the highest odds ratios of 1.640 and 1.529, respectively. Conclusions We demonstrated that high serum γ-glutamyltransferase concentrations were directly associated with the increased risk of arterial stiffness, in general, and with peripheral polyneuropathy in subjects with diabetes in an ethnic She Chinese population. Alcohol use, gender, BMI and blood pressure were related to serum γ-glutamyltransferase and were involved in the relationship between serum γ-glutamyltransferase and brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity. The purpose of this study is to develop an emission inventory for major anthropogenic air pollutants and VOC species in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region for the year 2007. A "bottom-up" methodology was adopted to compile the inventory based on major emission sources in the sixteen cities of this region. Results show that the emissions of SO2, NOx, CO, PM10, PM2.5, VOCs, and NH3 in the YRD region for the year 2007 are 2392 kt, 2293 kt, 6697 kt, 3116 kt, 1511 kt, 2767 kt, and 459 kt, respectively. Ethylene, mp-xylene, o-xylene, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 2,4-dimethylpentane, ethyl benzene, propylene, 1-pentene, and isoprene are the key species contributing 77 % to the total ozone formation potential (OFP). The spatial distribution of the emissions shows the emissions and OFPs are mainly concentrated in the urban and industrial areas along the Yangtze River and around Hangzhou Bay. The industrial sources, including power plants other fuel combustion facilities, and non-combustion processes contribute about 97%, 86%, 89%, 91%, and 69% of the total SO2, NOx, PM10, PM2.5, and VOC emissions. Vehicles take up 12.3% and 12.4% of the NOx and VOC emissions, respectively. Regarding OFPs, the chemical industry, domestic use of paint & printing, and gasoline vehicles contribute 38%, 24%, and 12% to the ozone formation in the YRD region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some evidence suggests that angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism may play a role in endothelium-dependent vasodilatation. However, the impact of I/D polymorphism on endogenous nitric oxide production, which may be of great therapeutic significance, has scarcely been studied. This study aimed to investigate this in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics. Adult Han subjects were recruited by cluster sampling from two communities in Shunde, Guangdong province, China. Plasma nitrite and nitrate (NO) levels were determined by colorimetry assay and angiotensin II and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1-alpha by radioimmunoassay. Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene I/D polymorphism were genotyped by polymer chain reaction-amplified fragment length polymorphism. Of the 779 subjects who met our inclusion criteria, 502 were with normotensive and normocholesterolaemic, 76 had hypertension only, 146 hypercholesterolaemia only, and 55 had both hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. Among subjects with hypertension only, the plasma levels of NO for genotype DD were significantly lower than those for genotype II ( P = 0·034). And the plasma levels of NO for genotype DD was significantly higher than those for genotype II ( P = 0·040) in subjects with hypercholesterolaemia only. Our results suggest that I/D polymorphism has an impact on in vivo NO production in hypertensives and hypercholesterolaemics at the population level. Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (CADRs) are common skin adverse reactions associated with drugs. To assess recent trends in CADRs and the drugs associated with them, using data from the past 5 years in the largest single database available on a hospital-based population in China. All clinical records of inpatients admitted with a diagnosis of CADR to the Dermatology Ward, Huashan Hospital from January 2004 to December 2008 were retrospectively studied. In the 734 patients, the three most common types of CADRs were nonsevere reactions, erythema multiforme (EM)-like eruptions ( n = 255), urticaria ( n = 192) and exanthematous reactions ( n = 159), followed by three severe reactions: Stevens-Johnson syndrome ( n = 58), toxic epidermal necrolysis ( n = 29) and exfoliative dermatitis ( n = 22). The most common single drug associated with the development of all drug eruptions was allopurinol, followed by amoxicillin, cephalosporins, antiepileptic agents and antipyretic/analgesic agents. However, the most common single drugs associated with severe reactions were antiepileptic agents, followed by allopurinol, antipyretic/analgesic agents and cephalosporins. In contrast to patients with nonsevere reactions, patients with severe reactions were more likely to be male ( P < 0.001) and to have a greater mean age of onset ( P < 0.001), a longer latency period ( P < 0.001) and a longer duration of hospitalization ( P < 0.001). In contrast to previous studies, we found allopurinol to be the most common single drug associated with CADRs followed by antibiotics (amoxicillin and cephalosporins), and antiepileptic, especially carbamazepine. Populations of Sinojackia rehderiana are highly threatened and have small and scattered distribution due to habitat fragmentation and human activities. Understanding changes in genetic diversity, the fine-scale spatial genetic structure (SGS) at different life stages and gene flow of S. rehderiana is critical for developing successful conservation strategies for fragmented populations of this endangered species. In this study, 208 adults, 114 juveniles and 136 seedlings in a 50 × 100-m transect within an old-growth forest were mapped and genotyped using eight microsatellite makers to investigate the genetic diversity and SGS of this species. No significant differences in genetic diversity among different life-history stages were found. However, a significant heterozygote deficiency in adults and seedlings may result from substantial biparental inbreeding. Significant fine-scale spatial structure was found in different life-history stages within 19 m, suggesting that seed dispersal mainly occurred near a mother tree. Both historical and contemporary estimates of gene flow (13.06 and 16.77 m) indicated short-distance gene dispersal in isolated populations of S. rehderiana. The consistent spatial structure revealed in different life stages is most likely the result of limited gene flow. Our results have important implications for conservation of extant populations of S. rehderiana. Measures for promoting pollen flow should be taken for in situ conservation. The presence of a SGS in fragmented populations implies that seeds for ex situ conservation should be collected from trees at least 19-m apart to reduce genetic similarity between neighbouring individuals. The article presents a study on human telomerase RNA gene (TERC) gain and polysomy of chromosome 3 in cervivaginal liquid-based pap preparations. It mentions the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for the investigation of the study in Guilin, China and to assess FISH findings and clinical diagnoses. Results showed that TERC gain and polysomy of chromosome 3 are significant in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and carcinoma and FISH is a potential tool for clinical diagnoses.

The effectiveness of a peer-led education intervention in HIV/AIDS prevention was assessed in the Chinese children of migrant workers. A prospective study was conducted in 12 junior high schools for migrant children. Among the intervention group, a peer-education-based HIV/AIDS prevention was implemented for three months. The results during the baseline survey indicated that the level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS was lower in children of migrant workers. After three months of peer-led intervention, compared with the control group, students in the intervention group positively increased their HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, modified their attitude and improved their protection self-efficacy. Compared with attitude, intervention was more effective in the improvement of knowledge and protection self-efficacy, especially knowledge. The findings suggest that peer-led education was an effective method in improving knowledge, attitude and protection self-efficacy in Chinese children of migrant workers. Heightened concerns targeting the group students were particularly necessary, given their lower level of related knowledge and vulnerability to HIV infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seventy-five clinical isolates of Clostridium difficile from Shanghai and 80 from Stockholm were investigated. The prevalence of toxin A-negative, toxin B-positive isolates of C.  difficile among isolates from Shanghai (33.3%) was significantly higher than among isolates from Stockholm (0%). Both sets of isolates were fully susceptible to metronidazole and vancomycin. However, the MICs of fluoroquinolones, erythromycin–clindamycin, tetracycline, rifampin and fusidic acid were significantly higher for the Shanghai isolates than for the Stockholm isolates. Thirty-three PCR ribotypes were identified; a dominant clone, 017, accounted for 18.7% of Shanghai isolates, whereas clone 005 dominated among Stockholm isolates, accounting for 11.3%. Few studies have examined the long-term effects of peer-led HIV prevention in Chinese adolescents. A two-year follow-up study was conducted among senior high school students in a medium-sized city of Fujian Province, from 1 March 2006 to 30 April 2008. In all, 3068 students from 14 schools were invited in March 2006, and 893 students in five schools were followed up. Data were collected at baseline, right after intervention (one month later) and two years later by a self-administered questionnaire. In the intervention group, the average knowledge score including reproductive health and HIV/AIDS/sexually transmitted diseases rose from 4.30 to 7.06 one month later (P, 0.01) and to 7.08 two years later (P, 0.01). There was no significant difference between the average knowledge score after one month and two years (P . 0.05). Sustained increases were found in the attitude scores towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) and intention of condom use after intervention. The study indicates that peer-led HIV prevention education succeeds in improving and sustaining HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and some behaviour intentions. This study aimed to assess HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, sources and perceived need among senior high school students in China. A total of 2668 senior high school students aged 15.17-23.42 years participated in the survey. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on HIV/sexually transmitted infection-related knowledge, sources and perceived information need. The results showed that levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge were distributed as follows: low for 6.8%, moderate for 29.6% and high for 63.7%. The most important information sources were, in rank order, TV/photographic recording (72.1%), school heath education curriculum (51.8%) and reading materials (45.7%). About half of the students, 46.3%, confirmed a need for more information and 87.8% of the sampled senior high school students communicated with others if he/she had problems related to HIV/ AIDS. Strengthening and improving information sources, particularly its accuracy and comprehensiveness, would help in ensuring that adolescents obtained the HIV/AIDS health information they needed. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), impaired glucose regulation (IGR) and related metabolic disorders (overweight, obesity and hypertension) in a Chinese population (20–74 years old). An additional goal was to investigate the relationship between glucose metabolism and the Minnesota code-indicated major abnormal electrocardiogram (MA-ECG). There were 3960 individuals selected from urban and rural areas of Fujian, China from July 2007 to May 2008 by multistage-stratified sampling. Ultimately, data from 3208 subjects (20–74 years old) were analysed (including physical measurements, blood biochemical analysis, oral glucose tolerance test and 12-lead resting ECG). According to World Health Organization diagnostic criteria, the prevalence rates of DM and IGR were 9.51% (male, 10.08%; female, 9.14%) and 14.40% (male, 14.48%; female, 14.35%) respectively. Newly diagnosed DM was found in 53.44% of the diabetic subjects. Based on the 2000 China census, the age-standardized prevalence rates of DM and IGR were 7.19% (male, 7.74%; female, 6.61%) and 11.96 % (male, 12.35%; female, 11.56%) respectively. The age-standardized prevalence rates of DM and IGR in urban areas (7.74% and 12.97% respectively) were slightly but no significantly higher than in rural areas (6.67%, 10.86%). The prevalence rates of overweight, obesity and hypertension were 25.50%, 3.52% and 28.52% respectively (age- and sex- standardized rates: 23.69%, 3.02 % and 22.45 %). After adjusting for other confounding risk factors, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that DM and impaired glucose tolerance were independent risk factors for MA-ECG. Non-diabetic subjects with increased 30-min plasma glucose (PG) after an oral glucose load had a higher risk of MA-ECG after adjusting for other risk factors, especially in those with normal glucose tolerance but with 30-min PG ≥ 7.8 mmol L−1 (odds ratio = 1.371 [1.055–1.780]). The prevalence rates of DM and IGR as well as other metabolic disorders have increased dramatically in the last decade in China, especially in rural areas, with many undiagnosed cases of DM. The heterodimeric transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) complex plays a key role in immune surveillance. TAP1 and TAP2 typing was usually performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–restriction fragment length polymorphism and PCR–sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe. As an alternative to these methods, we have established TaqMan assays to determine the frequencies of the TAP1 and TAP2 alleles. We have used these new TaqMan assays to genotype the polymorphisms in 339 unrelated Chinese Hans residing in North and South China. We detected five TAP1 and four TAP2 alleles. All the loci conform to the Hardy–Weinberg expectations. The most frequent alleles in Chinese Hans were TAP1*0101 (79.79%) and TAP2*0101 (82.74%). The two-locus haplotype analysis showed highly significant positive linkage disequilibrium for one TAP1–TAP2 haplotype ( TAP1*020101–TAP2*0102), three TAP1–DRB1 haplotypes ( TAP1*020101–DRB1*03, TAP1*020102–DRB1*13, and TAP1*0301–DRB1*16), and three TAP2–DRB1 haplotypes ( TAP2*0102–DRB1*09, TAP2*0103–DRB1*04, and TAP2*0201–DRB1*01). The three-locus haplotype analysis showed highly significant positive linkage disequilibrium for TAP1*0101–TAP2*0101–DRB1*07, TAP1*0101–TAP2*0103–DRB1*04, TAP1*020101–TAP2*0101–DRB1*03, and TAP1*020101–TAP2*0102–DRB1*13. Comparison of the allele frequencies with those of other populations showed that the TAP1 allele distribution was very similar in all the groups, except for the Guarani, Kaingang, and Anatolian populations, but TAP2 distribution was significantly different from that of the other populations. The Chaoshan littoral is located in a high-incidence area of esophageal cancer in the south of China. In this study, a new esophageal cancer cell line CSEC was established from a 47-year-old female Chinese patient in this district. The biological characters of the cultured cells were investigated, including morphology, ultrastructure, growth kinetic features, tumorigenicity, expression of tumor-associated antigen and cytogenetic features. CSEC cell line grew continuously with a doubling time of 39.5 h and had been passaged over 80 times. The CSEC cells possessed features of squamous epithelial cells with cytokeratin indicated by immunohistochemical staining and tonofilaments and desmosomes revealed by electron microscopy. Tumorigenicity to severe combined immunodeficient mice was confirmed and the tumors developed revealed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, similar to the origin tumor from which the cell line derived. The cytogenetic analysis demonstrated hypertetraploid karyotypes. Chromosome structure aberrations were common and complicated. Immunohistochemical staining showed that CSEC cells were infected with HPV and over-expressed p53. In summary, the CSEC cell line is a well-differentiated esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell line from a high-incidence area in southern China. The Dongting Lake region is one of the areas prone to flood disaster in China. Despite the frequent occurrence of flooding in this area, few studies have analysed its effects on rodent communities, especially their recovery after withdrawal of floodwaters. We carried out a study of rodent recovery after flooding of the Dongting Lake region in 1998. Rodent population monitoring in the flooded countryside of the Dongting Lake region was conducted during 1998–2001. The census was conducted in Anzao polder of Anxian County in Hunan Province, where the dike burst in 1998 and thousands of hectares of farmland were flooded from July to October. The results indicate that flood disaster could provide important changes in rodent community structure. Firstly, species abundance in the post-flood area became less than in the normal area. Striped field mice Apodemus agrarius colonized the flooded area in farmland until March 2000, and Norway rats Rattus norvegicus and house mice Mus musculus occurred in July and December 2000, respectively. The degree of the effect on the rodent community in residential premises is less than that in farmland. However, the rodent community in the flooded area could recover and become similar to the normal community. The recovery of rodent species composition was faster in residential premises than in farmland after flooding. Secondly, there was a similar tendency of the dominant concentration indices between post-flood and normal areas. Thirdly, inundation for a long period could reduce the species diversity of the rodent community in farmland. The significant difference in abundance was continued to 2000 in post-flooded farmland; however, the influence on the rodent community in residential premises was less and their diversity indices did not differ in 1999. Similarity indices indicated that variation between post-flood and normal areas had been gradually becoming low from 1999 to 2001. Finally, the monitoring data showed that rodent populations in the flooded area were less than those in the normal area in the first step after withdrawal of floodwaters. However, the rodent population increased rapidly in the flooded area, and became greater than that in the unflooded area in half a year. The population in the flooded area also increased faster than that in unflooded neighbouring area after the application of rodenticide. Another phenomenon was that the population density of rodents could reach levels greater than the normal area, and may continue for more than 2 years. Flood disasters could reduce population densities and species abundance, species diversity and evenness, while increasing dominant concentration indices of the rodent community. However, after 3 years, the rodent community structure became similar to that in the non-flooded area, except for high density. The aim of this multicenter study was to identify the causative pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Shanghai, China, and to determine their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Pathogens obtained from 389 patients with documented CAP during 2001–2003 were identified by multiple diagnostic tools that included bacterial culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and specific immunological assays. Susceptibility of the bacterial isolates was tested by the broth microdilution method. A specific pathogen was identified in 39.8% (155/389) of the patients: Haemophilus influenzae ( n=80), Klebsiella spp. ( n=15), Streptococcus pneumoniae ( n=12), Staphylococcus aureus ( n=6), Moraxella catarrhalis ( n=1), other gram-negative organisms ( n=9), and atypical pathogens that comprised Mycoplasma pneumoniae ( n=42), Chlamydia pneumoniae ( n=17), and Legionella pneumophila ( n=2). Most H. influenzae isolates were susceptible to ampicillin (88.3%), and all were susceptible to macrolides. Of the S. pneumoniae isolates, 75% (9/12) were susceptible to penicillin, while 25% (3/12) were intermediately susceptible. H. influenzae and atypical pathogens are among the most important pathogens of CAP. Ampicillin, cephalosporins, and the newer fluoroquinolones can be used as empirical therapy for CAP in the Shanghai area. The efficacy of monotherapy with newer macrolides for CAP caused by S. pneumoniae requires further evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aromatic nitrogen and other novel hopanoid-related compounds were tentatively identified in biodegraded crude oils from the Liaohe Basin, NE China. They include naphthohopanes, pyridino-, quinolino-, acridino- or benzoquinolino-, and naphthoquinolinohopanes. The nitrogen-containing hopanoids occur in substantial quantities in the biodegraded oils, with around 14 ppm of a single compound of the pyridino- and quinolinohopanoids, whereas the compounds with more rings, acridino- or benzoquinolino- and naphthoquinolinohopanes, are much less abundant, with a maximum concentration less than 2 ppm and 1 ppm, respectively. These novel highly cyclised compound series may be viewed as representatives of new classes of components whose natural distribution and biogeochemical significance remain to be determined, although the possibility of diagenetic modification of known hopane precursors (as known for sulfur-containing hopanoids) cannot be ruled out. Alternatively, inorganic nitrogen (ammonium ion) which is abundant in oil field waters, sourced by clay water equilibria, could be incorporated into biohopanoids to lead to these novel compound classes. In addition, hopanes and hopanoic acids were detected up to C40 and C37, respectively, as were as the common aromatic benzohopanes. These biodegraded oils are strongly enriched in hopanoids, with contents of the aliphatic hopanes up to 6.3% of the whole oil. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

To investigate underground hydrogeological conditions and to obtain accurate aquifer parameters, the time-lapse transient electromagnetic method (TEM) is applied to image groundwater drawdown within a massive thickness sandstone aquifer (thickness over 100 m) in Inner Mongolia, China. 2D geophysical models are established based on the hydrostratigraphy of the survey site and, then, the induced electromotive forces (EMF) pre- and post-pumping test are analysed. Multiple aquifers can be detected by 2D forward modelling and the unsaturated region can be distinguished by the variation of electromagnetic responses. Furthermore, the measured electromotive force curves before (pre-) and after (post-) pumping deviate from each other and the groundwater drawdown has a positive correlation with the deviation degree, namely relative variation. The raw EMF data are processed with Occam's inversion method and two 2D resistivity data volumes are obtained. The resistivity-depth cross-sections from the data volume show that the groundwater drawdown is larger in the east of the TEM area due to the large permeability and water content. The centre of the depression cone is located at east Pumping Well 1 and the drawdown is 70 m, which is basically coincident with the group drilling pumping test result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
