Short-term measurements were made in four different types of Chinese cave dwellings, 'ground', 'open-cut', 'aboveground' and 'underground', located in Gansu Province, China, in order to evaluate the diurnal and seasonal variations in indoor radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) concentrations. As a result, in most of the 'ground' and 'open-cut' cave dwellings in summer, the indoor 222Rn concentrations during the nighttime were higher than those during the daytime. In the winter, such fluctuation was not observed. The daily indoor 222Rn concentrations in summer were higher than those in winter, excluding the 'aboveground' cave dwelling, and these concentrations depended on dwelling type, exhalation from the building materials and ventilation. Abstract: Numerous epidemiological studies have been carried out to clarify the health effects caused by indoor radon exposure. Some of passive monitors for radon are sensitive to thoron, and thus the results of measurements might be possibly overestimated as radon concentration. Recently, we developed a simple radon–thoron discriminative monitor by using two passive detectors and a special method for concentration measurements of thoron decay products, and applied them to field measurements in conducted in Chinese loess plateau where cave dwellings are widely distributed. Our new monitors revealed the presence of high thoron concentration there. The highest concentration of 1471 Bq/m3 was observed and the mean was 240 Bq/m3. The mean concentration of thoron decay products was 2.2 Bq/m3. It was very low, compared with the expected concentration from the equilibrium factor of 0.1 adopted by UNSCEAR 2000. On the other hand, the mean radon concentration was 73 Bq/m3. The effective dose estimated from our discriminative measurements was 2.4 mSv/year, which is below a half of 5.9 mSv/year estimated from the results of the nondiscriminative measurements. In this paper, we revised the physopeltine genus Physopelta Amyot Serville, 1843 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Largidae) from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Five species were recognized and diagnosed, including two new species, Ph. (Neophysopelta) lutaspidata sp. nov. from northern and central Taiwan and Ph. (N.) fusciscutellata sp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and Taiwan, and three known species, Ph. (N.) gutta gutta (Burmeister, 1834), Ph. (N.) parviceps Blöte, 1931, and Ph. (N.) quadriguttata Bergroth, 1894. Physopelta (Neophysopelta) fusciscutellata sp. nov., was previously regarded as either of the two species, Ph. (N.) cincticollis Stål, 1863 and Ph. (N.) parviceps, for populations from Taiwan. Previous records of Ph. (N.) cincticollis from Japan proper and Korea, and Ph. (N.) slanbuschii (Fabricius, 1787) from the Ryukyu Islands were considered as misidentifications of Ph. parviceps. A key to facilitate the identification of the five species known in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan is provided. Additionally, Ph. (N.) parviceps is recorded from China (Guangdong Province and Zhejiang Province) for the first time.

In this review, we revise the pentatomine stink bug genus Plautia Stål from Japan. Five species are recognized and diagnosed, including three new species: P. sakishimensis sp. nov., P. himechabane sp. nov., and P. ishigaki sp. nov. One of these, P. himechabane sp. nov., was previously regarded as P. splendens Distant for the populations of the mainland of Japan, the Ryukyu Islands, and China. The species Plautia cyanoviridis Ruckes is proposed as a junior synonym of P. splendens, which is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands. A key is provided to facilitate the identification of the five species known in Japan.

The present study focuses on internal exposure caused by the inhalation of radon and thoron progenies because the internal exposures have not yet been clarified. For their dose assessment, radon, thoron and thoron progeny concentrations were measured by passive monitors over a long period (for 6 months). Consequently, radon, thoron and equilibrium equivalent thoron concentrations were given as 124 ± 78, 1247 ± 1189 and 7.8 ± 9.1 Bq m(-3), respectively. Annual effective doses are estimated to be 3.1 ± 2.0 mSv for radon and 2.2 ± 2.5 mSv for thoron. Total dose are estimated to be 5.3 ± 3.5 mSv a(-1). There is a well-known discrepancy between dosimetrically derived dose conversion factor (DCF) and epidemiologically derived DCF for radon. As the latter DCFs, International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommends a value of ∼6.4 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) and 7.9 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) for radon decay products (RnDP) in dwellings and workplaces, respectively. On the other hand, the dosimetric calculations based on the ICRP-66 respiratory tract model derived a DCF of 13 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) and 17 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) for RnDP in dwellings and workplaces, respectively, and 83 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) for thoron decay products (TnDP) in dwellings. In addition, the DCFs derived from both approaches and UNSCEAR were applied to comparative dosimetry for two thoron-enhanced areas (cave dwellings in China and dwellings at a spa town in Japan), where the equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon and equilibrium equivalent concentration of thoron have been measured. In the case of the spa town dwellings, the dose from TnDP was larger than the dose from RnDP.

The present study investigated the morphology of astrocytes in the hippocampus and serum S100B levels in cases of mechanical asphyxia due to neck compression (n=23: atypical hanging, n=7; ligature/manual strangulation, n=16) with regard to the classical autopsy findings, compared with those of other types of asphyxiation (n=9) and acute myocardial infarction/ischemia (AMI, n=20). The decrease in intact astrocyte number, as shown by S100 and GFAP-immunostaining, was larger for asphyxiation due to neck compression compared with that for other asphyxiation and AMI, showing a correlation with the increase in the serum S100B levels. The decrease in intact astrocyte number and increase in serum S100B were closely related to the severity of conjunctival petechial hemorrhage and fracture(s) of the hyoid bone and/or thyroid cartilage in asphyxia due to neck compression. These findings suggest that hippocampal astrocyte injury is caused by cerebral hypoxia accompanied by congestion, especially in mechanical asphyxia due to neck compression., ((c) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Indoor radon measurements were carried out in cave dwellings of the Chinese loess plateau in Gansu province, where previously the Laboratory of Industrial Hygiene (LIH), China, and the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) had conducted an international collaborative epidemiological study. The LIH-NCI study showed an increased lung cancer risk due to high residential radon levels, and estimated the excess odds ratio at 100 Bq/m3 to be 0.19 (Wang et al., 2002). The present study used two types of newly developed passive monitors: One is a discriminative monitor for radon and thoron; the other is a selective monitor for thoron decay products. The arithmetic mean concentrations of indoor radon and thoron were 91 and 351 Bq/m3, respectively. As reported by our previous study in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces (Tokonami et al., 2004), the presence of high thoron concentration was confirmed and thoron was predominant over radon in the cave dwellings. However, the mean equilibrium equivalent thoron concentration (EETC) was found to be much lower than expected when assuming the equilibrium factor of 0.1 provided by the UNSCEAR (2000) report. The effective dose by radon and thoron decay products was estimated to be 3.08 mSv/yr. It was significantly lower than the dose of 8.22 mSv/yr estimated from the measurements that did not take into consideration any discrimination between radon and thoron. Excess relative risk of lung cancer per sievert may be much higher than the risk estimated from the LIH-NCI study, considering that discriminative measurements were not used in their study.

Measurements of natural radiation were carried out in cave dwellings distributed in the Chinese loess plateau. Those dwellings are located in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces. Radon and thoron gas concentrations were measured using a passive integrating radon-thoron discriminative detector. Concentrations of thoron decay products were estimated from measurements of their deposition rates. A detector was placed at the center of each dwelling for 6 months and replaced with a fresh one for another 6 months. Measurements were conducted in 202 dwellings from August 2001 through August 2002. A short-term measurement was conducted during the observation period. In addition, gamma-ray dose rates were measured both indoors and outdoors with an electronic pocket dosimeter. Radioactivities in soil were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry with a pure germanium detector. Among 193 dwellings, indoor radon concentrations ranged from 19 to 195 Bq m(-3) with a geometric mean (GM) of 57 Bq m(-3), indoor thoron concentrations ranged from 10 to 865 Bq m(-3) with a GM of 153 Bq m(-3), and indoor equilibrium equivalent thoron concentrations ranged from 0.3 to 4.9 Bq m(-3) with a GM of 1.6 Bq m(-3). Arithmetic means of the gamma-ray dose rates were estimated to be 140 nGy h(-1) indoors and 110 nGy h(-1) outdoors. The present study revealed that the presence of thoron is not negligible for accurate radon measurements and thus that special attention should be paid to thoron and its decay products for dose assessment in such an environment. More systematic studies are necessary for a better understanding of thoron and its decay products.

TT virus (TTV) DNA in serum samples obtained from 24 TTV-infected infants was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with inverse primers derived from the untranslated region. The amplified PCR products were molecularly cloned; six clones each were analyzed. Seventy-six (53%) of the 144 TTV clones were classified into group 4 (YONBAN isolates), and 22 (15%) into a novel genetic group (group 5). The TTV clones in group 4 were classified into 9 types, and those in group 5 into 4 types. The entire nucleotide sequence of one representative clone each from the 13 types were determined; they comprised 3570-3770 nucleotides, and had poor homology to TTVs of groups 1-3 (TA278, PMV and SANBAN isolates). A phylogenetic tree based on the entire nucleotide sequence of open reading frame 1 confirmed the presence of five distinct clusters separated by a bootstrap value of 100%. Analysis of 13 TTV variants demonstrated preservation of the genomic organization and transcription profile in all TTV groups. TTV group 4 was detected in 54% or 72% of 7-to-12-month-old infants in Japan and China, respectively, which is comparable with that among adults in the respective country, indicating early and frequent acquisition of this TTV group in infancy.

Environmental carcinogens often induce specific mutations in the p53 gene, apparent in tumors. The relation between aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 )-related hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and hot spot at codon 249 of the p53 gene has received a great deal of attention, but its significance is still controversial. To clarify this problem, we analyzed the p53-mutational status of HCCs in Jiang-su province in China, where AFB1 contamination of the staple food significantly differs between the northern and southern parts (prominent only in the latter), while other conditions are quite similar. Background liver status and mutations in exons 5 to 8 of p53 in a total of 31 cases were divided approximately equally between the 2 areas. In all, 15 tumors exhibited a total of 17 mutations in the p53 gene; 9 cases from the southern part of the province had the hot-spot mutation at codon 249 (9/16, 56%), but only one case from the northern part (1/15, 8%). These results suggest that AFB1 contamination may correlate with codon-249 mutations in HCC.
