Understanding the environmental and economic impacts of copper hydrometallurgy throughout the whole life cycle is necessary for sustainable development of the copper industry. In this study, the environmental impacts and economic costs throughout the two major copper hydrometallurgical routes in China, including heap leaching and heap-agitation leaching, are analyzed and compared using the life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC) technique. The life cycle inventory compiled from the annual statistics of the Muliashi Copper Mine, and the data regarding energy and materials process are based on the GaBi databases. The environmental impacts are quantified into 12 indicators. The results show that compared with heap leaching route, heap-agitation leaching route reduces 36.8% of abiotic depletion potential (ADP elements), but increases over half of cumulative energy demand (CED), marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential (MAETP) and human toxicity potential (HTP). Furthermore, the stage of electrowinning and agitation leaching contributes the largest environmental impact to heap leaching and heap-agitation leaching route, respectively. This is mainly due to huge consumption of electricity and sulfuric acid. The analysis of economic cost reveals that heap leaching route needs internal cost of $3225/t Cu and external cost of $426/t Cu. Compared with heap leaching route, heap-agitation leaching route increased the internal and external cost by 18.9% and 54.2%, respectively. But the economic return from heap-agitation leaching is double that from heap leaching. Together, these results indicate heap-agitation leaching has a larger environmental impact and higher economic benefit than heap leaching, which is helpful for the government to design ecological compensation policies in the balance between ecological environment and economic development. • A life cycle comparison of two copper hydrometallurgical routes is conducted. • Heap-agitation leaching has greater environmental impact than heap leaching. • Heap-agitation leaching has 23.0% more life cycle cost than heap leaching. • The electricity process contributes the largest environmental and economic impacts. Key Message: High-throughput next-generation sequencing of 161 olive germplas. 33 samples were selected as core olive germplasm and Fingerprints were constructed. After GWAS analysis of olive leaf shape, 14 candidate genes were localized. Olive (Olea europaea L.) has been introduced to China since the 1960s. After a prolonged period of variation and domestication, there is a lack of comprehensive research on its genetics. The olive oil directly extracted from Olea europaea L. is recognized as 'liquid gold', nevertheless, people constantly overlook the valuable wealth of olive leaves. High-throughput next-generation sequencing was performed on 161 olive germplasm to analyze the kinship, genetic structure and diversity of olives, and the core germplasm of olives were selected and fingerprints were constructed. Meanwhile, Genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) was performed to locate the gene for regulating olive leaf shape. Herein, the results parsed that most of the Chinese olive germplasm was more closely related to the Italian germplasm. A wealth of hybridized germplasm possessed high genetic diversity and had the potential to be used as superior parental material for olive germplasm. A total of 33 samples were selected and characterized as core germplasm of olive and Fingerprints were also constructed. A total of 14 candidate genes were localized after GWAS analysis of four olive leaf shape phenotypes, including leaf shape, leaf curvature shape, leaf tip and leaf base shape. Collectively, this study revealed the genetic basis of olives in China and also succeeded in constructing the core germplasm that stands for the genetic diversity of olives, which can contribute to the scientific and effective collection and preservation of olive germplasm resources, and provide a scientific basis for the in-depth excavation and utilization of genes regulating olive leaf shape., (© 2024. Microbial oxidation and reduction of iron and sulfur are important parts of biogeochemical cycles in acidic environments such as geothermal solfataric regions. Species of Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum are the common ferrous-iron and sulfur oxidizers from such environments. This study focused on the Tengchong sofataric region, located in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Based on cultivation, 9 strains that grow on ferrous-iron and sulfuric compounds were obtained. Analysis of 16S rRNA genes of the 9 strains indicated that they were affiliated to Acidithiobacillus, Alicyclobacillus, Sulfobacillus, Leptospirillum and Acidiphilium. Physiological and phylogenetic studies indicated that two strains (TC-34 and TC-71) might represent two novel members of Alicyclobacillus. Strain TC-34 and TC-71 showed 94.8%-97.1% 16S rRNA gene identities to other species of Alicyclobacillus. Different from the previously described Alicyclobacillus species, strains TC-34 and TC-71 were mesophilic and their cellular fatty acids do not contain omega-cyclic fatty acids. Strain TC-71 was obligately dependent on ferrous-iron for growth. It was concluded that the ferrous-iron oxidizers were diversified and Alicyclobacillus species were proposed to take part in biochemical geocycling of iron in the Tengchong solfataric region.
