As perceived career plateau is a prevalent but undesirable state which is harmful to employees and organizations, human resource management (HRM) research has devoted efforts to exploring ways of managing it. However, to date, research has largely been limited to variables that reduce perceived career plateau. There is a need to understand what factors increase these perceptions and how/when they do so, to advance theoretical and practical perspectives. This study contributes to the career plateau literature by investigating how and under what conditions work‐role overload can increase employees' perceived career plateau (hierarchical and job content plateaus). Based on a three‐wave survey of employees from the service sector of China, we found that work‐role overload interacted with employees' trait emotional stability and affected their work–life conflict, which had downstream implications on the two types of perceived career plateaus. Specifically, work‐role overload related positively to work–life conflict only when employees had a high (versus low) level of emotional stability. Also, work–life conflict mediated the effects of work‐role overload on perceived hierarchical and job content plateaus for employees with high, but not for those with low, emotional stability. These findings provide new insights into how, by taking into account stressful work contexts and individual differences, HRM professionals may intervene to prevent employees from perceiving career plateau. Chrysoeriol is an active ingredient derived from the Chinese medicinal herb (CMH) "Lonicerae japonicae flos" in the dried flower bud or bloomed flower of Lonicera japonica Thunberg. Dermatoses are the most common diseases in humans, including eczema, acne, psoriasis, moles, and fungal infections, which are temporary or permanent and may be painless or painful. Topical corticosteroids are widely used in Western medicine, but there are some side effects when it is continuously and regularly utilized in a large dosage. Chrysoeriol is a natural active ingredient, nontoxic, and without any adverse reactions in the treatment of dermatological conditions. Methods: Nine electronic databases were searched, including WanFang Data, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Springer Link, SciFinder, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), without regard to language constraints. The pharmacological activities of chrysoeriol from Lonicerae japonicae flos to fight against skin diseases were explained and evaluated through the literature review of either in vitro or in vivo studies. Results: Chrysoeriol decreased the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. These were transcriptionally regulated by NF-κB and STAT3 to combat skin inflammation. It also showed promising actions in treating many skin ailments including wound healing, depigmentation, photoprotection, and antiaging. Conclusion: The cutaneous route is the best delivery approach to chrysoeriol across the skin barrier. However, toxicity, dosage, and safety assessments of chrysoeriol in a formulation or nanochrysoeriol on the human epidermis for application in skin diseases must be further investigated. Recently described cave species of the genus Triplophysa have been discovered in southwestern China, suggesting that the diversity of the genus is severely underestimated and that there may be many undescribed species. In this work, four new species of the genus Triplophysa are described from southwestern Guizhou Province, China, namely Triplophysa cehengensis Luo, Mao, Zhao, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov. and Triplophysa rongduensis Mao, Zhao, Yu, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov. from Rongdu Town, Ceheng County, Guizhou, Triplophysa panzhouensis Yu, Luo, Lan, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov. from Hongguo Town, Panzhou City, Guizhou, and Triplophysa anlongensis Song, Luo, Lan, Zhao, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov. from Xinglong Town, Anlong County, Guizhou. These four new species can be distinguished from all recognized congeners by a combination of morphological characteristics and significant genetic divergences. The discovery of these species increases the number of known cave species within the genus Triplophysa to 39, making the genus the second most diverse group of cave fishes in China after the golden-line fish genus Sinocyclocheilus. Based on the non-monophyletic relationships of the different watershed systems in the phylogenetic tree, this study also discusses the use of cave species of the genus Triplophysa to determine the possible historical connectivity of river systems. This work describes a new species, Balitora anlongensis sp. nov., collected from a cave at Xinglong Town, Anlong County, Guzihou, China. Phylogenetic trees reconstructed based on two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes show that the new species represents an independent evolutionary lineage with large genetic differences, 7.1%-12.0% in mitochondrial gene cytochrome b and 9.2%-12.1% in cytochrome oxidase subunit 1, from congeners. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from the 18 species currently assigned to the genus Balitora by a combination of characters, most clearly by having two pairs of maxillary barbels; 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays; 5½ branched anal-fin rays; pectoral fin not reaching pelvic fin origin; dorsal-fin origin in front of pelvic fin origin; eye small (eye diameter approximately equal to outer maxillary barbel length); and fins lacking pigment in live fish. The new species represents the first record of Balitora inhabiting caves in China and increases the number of species in the genus Balitora in its present concept from 18 to 19. In this work, a new species of the genus Oreonectes is described, named Oreonectes damingshanensis Yu, Luo, Lan, Xiao & Zhou, sp. nov., collected from the Damingshan Mountains of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Phylogenetic trees constructed based on the mitochondrial Cyt b showed that the new species represents an independent evolutionary lineage, with uncorrected genetic distances (p-distance) from congeners ranging from 6.1% to 8.9%. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from five other species of the genus by a combination of characters. The discovery of this new species raises the number of known species of Oreonectes from five to six. Our study suggests that O. platycephalus may be a complex containing multiple species and that previously recorded areas need to be further delimited and reevaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To explore the safety and role of tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil (S1) maintenance therapy (MT) in metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients after response to first-line chemotherapy and to assess outcome-associated biomarkers. Methods: This was a multicentre, open-label, randomized controlled study involving metastatic NPC patients recruited (from May 2015 to May 2019) at five hospitals in China. The participants were randomized to S1-MT (receiving S1 MT until disease progression or intolerance) or non-MT (followed up until disease progression) groups. The primary endpoint was the progression-free survival (PFS). The secondary endpoints were the overall survival (OS), the correlation between EBV-DNA, serum amyloid A (SAA) status, and outcomes after the first-line chemotherapy, and safety. Results: The median follow-up was 24.3 months; 88 and 95 participants were evaluable in the S1-MT and non-MT groups, respectively. Compared with non-MT, S1-MT prolonged PFS (16.9 vs. 9.3 months, P < 0.001) and OS (33.6 vs. 20.6 months, P < 0.001). Regardless of their EBV-DNA status after first-line chemotherapy, participants were able to benefit from S1 MT, but EBV-DNA-positive participants benefited more significantly (PFS: HR = 0.600, 95% CI = 0.373–0.965, P = 0.035; OS: HR = 0.393, 95% CI = 0.227–0.681, P = 0.001). MT only improved PFS and OS in patients with an SAA decline after first-line chemotherapy (PFS: HR = 0.570, 95% CI = 0.350–0.919, P = 0.021; OS: HR = 0.404, 95% CI = 0.230–0.709, P = 0.002). The median S1 treatment was 23 cycles. Grade 1–2 skin pigmentation, oral mucositis, and hand and foot syndrome were the main adverse reactions. Conclusion: For metastatic NPC patients with first-line chemotherapy response, S1 MT can improve PFS and OS, with good tolerability. EBV-DNA and SAA can better help us identify patients who can benefit from MT after standard treatment. The existence of Himalayan long-eared bats, Plecotus homochrous (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae), in China has not been previously confirmed. In this study, four bats captured with harp traps from two sites in the Maoershan National Nature Reserve in Guangxi, China were investigated. These bats have long, wide auricles, each with a prominent tragus. The length of each auricle is about the same as that of a forearm. Hairs on the ventral fur have a dark base with mixed grey and yellowish tips; those on the dorsal fur also have a dark base and are bicolored with brown tips. The thumbs are very short. A concavity is present in the front of the dorsal side of the cranium. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogeny using Cyt b gene sequences, these bats were identified as P. homochrous, thus confirming the existence of Himalayan long-eared bats in China. This paper examines how differential leadership influences employee performance via perceived organizational support and individual-organizational fit. The psychological contract theory was used to investigate how differential leadership influences the performance of employees. The information was obtained by means of surveys distributed to various types of Chinese firms. A total of 358 complete responses for statistical analysis were received and examined. A structural equation model was used, which we believed would be the most appropriate model for testing the proposed study model. The evidence suggests that differentiated leadership promotes employee performance. The association between leadership differences and employee performance is positively mediated by perceived organizational support. Individual-organizational fit lowers the positive effect of differential leadership on employee performance and reduces the positive effect of organizational support perception on employee performance. Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is described from the Pearl River basin in Hongguo Town, Panzhou City, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Based on the presence of the long horn-like structure on the back of the head, Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is assigned to the Sinocyclocheilus angularis species group. Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of morphological characters: (1) presence of a single, relatively long horn-like structure on the back of the head; (2) pigmentation absent; (3) reduced eyes; (4) dorsal-fin rays, ii, 7; (5) pectoral-fin rays, i, 13; (6) anal-fin rays, iii, 5; (7) pelvic-fin rays, i, 7; (8) lateral line pores 38-49; (9) gill rakers well developed, nine on first gill arch; and (10) tip of adpressed pelvic fin not reaching anus. BACKGROUND: Nutritional risk is common among patients admitted to the emergency department and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Despite its large population, few comprehensive studies have been conducted in China concerning the nutritional status of patients admitted to emergency department observation units (EDOUs). METHODS: Patients admitted to EDOUs of 90 tertiary hospitals in China between June 2020 and December 2020 were enrolled. Demographic information, laboratory parameters, nutritional support therapies, and 28-day mortality were recorded. Risk factors for mortality were examined using multi-variate-adjusted logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for each predictor of mortality were plotted, and the area under the ROC (AUROC) curves was compared. RESULTS: A total of 2,005 eligible patients were finally enrolled. At the 28-day follow-up, 1,911 patients survived, and 94 died. The group with a Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS 2002) score of 3--4 points was the largest (52.01%). The number of patients receiving oral nutritional supplements, enteral nutrition (EN), parenteral nutrition (PN), and the combination of EN and PN was 425, 314, 853, and 413, respectively. Among the total, 77.55% of patients had nutritional risk (NRS 2002 ≥3). The proportion of patients with high nutritional risk (NRS2002≥5) in the age group >80 years was significantly higher than that in the age group 66--80 years (29.00% vs. 23.93%, P=0.032), but not significantly higher than that in the age group 18--65 years (29.00% vs. 26.54%, P=0.449). Logistic regression analysis revealed that heart failure (odds ratio [OR] 1.856, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.087-3.167, P=0.023), consciousness (OR 2.967, 95% CI 1.894-4.648, P<0.001), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score (OR 1.037, 95% CI 1.017-1.058, P<0.001), NRS 2002 score (OR 1.286, 95% CI 1.115-1.483, P=0.001), and Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score (OR 0.946, 95% CI 0.898-0.997, P=0.039) were all independent risk factors for 28-day mortality. APACHE II and NRS 2002 scores were superior to other predictors according to the comparison of AUROC. CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional risk is prevalent among older patients in EDOUs in China. APACHE II and NRS 2002 scores are important risk factors for mortality in patients admitted to the EDOU. The Paramesotriton Chang, 1935 genus of Asian warty newts is the second most diverse genus in the family Salamandridae, currently containing 14 recognized species from northern Vietnam to southwest-central and southern China. Although species of this genus have been included in previous phylogenetic studies, the origin and interspecific relationships of the genus are still not fully resolved, especially at key nodes in the phylogeny. In this study, we sequenced mitochondrial genomes and 32 nuclear genes from 27 samples belonging to 14 species to reconstruct the interspecific phylogenetic relationships within Paramesotriton and explore its historical biogeography in southern China. Both Bayesian inference and maximum-likelihood analyses highly supported the monophyly of Paramesotriton and its two recognized species groups (P. caudopunctatus and P. chinensis groups) and further identified five hypothetical phylogenetic cryptic species. Biogeographic analyses indicated that Paramesotriton originated in southwestern China (Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau/South China) during the late Oligocene. The time of origin of Paramesotriton corresponded to the second uplift of the Himalayan/Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) Plateau (QTP), rapid lateral extrusion of Indochina, and formation of karst landscapes in southwestern China. Principal component analysis (PCA), independent sample t-tests, and niche differentiation using bioclimatic variables based on locations of occurrence suggested that Paramesotriton habitat conditions in the three current regions (West, South, and East) differ significantly, with different levels of climatic niche differentiation. Species distribution model (SDM) predictions indicated that the most suitable distribution areas for the P. caudopunctatus and P. chinensis species groups are western and southern/eastern areas of southern China. This study increases our knowledge of the taxonomy, biodiversity, origin, and suitable distribution areas of the genus Paramesotriton based on phylogenetic, biogeographic, and species distribution models. Dissimilatory arsenate reduction from arsenic (As)-bearing minerals into highly mobile arsenite is one of the key mechanisms of As release into groundwater. To detect the microbial diversity and As-metabolizing gene clusters of indigenous arsenate-reducing bacteria in high As groundwater in the Hetao Plain of Inner Mongolia, China, three anaerobic arsenate-reducing bacteria were isolated and arrA and arsC gene-based clone libraries of four in situ groundwater samples were constructed. The strains IMARCUG-11(G-11), IMARCUG-C1(G-C1) and IMARCUG-12(G-12) were phylogenetically belonged to genera Paraclostridium, Citrobacter and Klebsiella, respectively. They could reduce >99% of 1 mM arsenate under anoxic conditions with lactate as a carbon source in 60 h, 72 h and 84 h, respectively. As far as we know, this was the first report of arsenate reduction by genus Paraclostridium. Compared with strain G-11 (arsC) and G-C1 (arsRBC), strain G-12 contained two incomplete ars operons (operon1: arsABC, operon2: arsBC), indicating that these strains might present different strategies to resist As toxicity. Phylogenetic analysis illuminating by the arrA genes showed that in situ arsenate-reducing bacterial communities were diverse and mainly composed of Desulfobacterales (53%, dominated by Geobacter), Betaproteobacteria (12%), and unidentified groups (35%). Based on the arsC gene analysis, the indigenous arsenate-reducing bacterial communities were mainly affiliated with Omnitrophica (88%) and Deltaproteobacteria (11%, dominated by Geobacter and Syntrophobacterales). Herein, we describe Panophrys congjiangensis sp. nov. obtained from the Yueliangshan Nature Reserve, Congjiang County, Guizhou Province, China. Phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and COI indicated that this new species represented an independent lineage, closely related to P. leishanensis. The uncorrected genetic distances between the new species and its closest congener, P. leishanensis, were 3.0% for 16S rRNA and 8.4% for COI. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological characteristics (1) medium body size (SVL 28.6-33.4 mm in males and 38.4-40.2 mm in females); (2) a small horn-like tubercle at the edge of each upper eyelid; (3) the tympanum distinctly visible (TD/ED ratio 0.47-0.66); (4) vomerine teeth absent; (5) the tongue not notched behind; (6) a narrow and unobvious lateral fringe on toes; (7) relative finger lengths II < I < V < III; (8) rudimentary webs on toes; (9) hindlimbs slender, heels overlapping when thighs are positioned at right angles to the body; (10) two metacarpal tubercles on the palm, with the inner metatarsal tubercle long and oval-shaped; (11) the tibiotarsal articulation reaching the nostril when the leg is adpressed and stretched forward; (12) dorsal skin rough with numerous orange-red granules, ventral surface smooth; (13) a single internal subgular vocal sac present in males; and (14) in breeding males, weak gray-black nuptial pads with black nuptial spines present on the dorsal surface of the bases of the first and second fingers. Purpose: Ovarian teratoma-associated anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis is a rare disease with uncertain etiology and pathogenesis. The disorder is severe and rare with a great impact on young adults. This study aimed to improve the awareness of the disease from experience in our single center. Methods: Between July 2012 and December 2019, six patients with ovarian teratoma-associated anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis were enrolled in Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. All patients' data like manifestations, laboratory and radiological data, treatment, and follow-up were reviewed. Results: Typical psychotic symptoms, memory, and consciousness disorders accompanied by seizures were observed in all patients from this study. All six patients showed positive signals in serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples for N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor and received immunotherapy. Three patients underwent unilateral oophorocystectomy and the other three underwent unilateral oophorectomy through minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic and single-port laparoscopic surgeries. The median follow-up time 24.5 months (range from 6 to 93 months). No death occurred. Two patients had recurrent psychotic symptoms while the left four patients had no mental symptoms or tumor recurrence during postoperative follow-up. Conclusions: For patients with clinical manifestations of unexplained acute psychiatric symptoms accompanied by seizures, memory, and consciousness disorders, the possibility of anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis should be considered. To confirm the diagnosis, examinations of anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antibodies need to be completed as early as possible. Immunotherapy and tumor location should be given in time once the diagnosis is defined. We recommended removing the tumor as soon as possible without concerning whether the patient is in the acute phase or not. The surgical procedure should be decided based on pathology, age, fertility desire, and patients' requirements and it should be ensured that tumors are completely removed during operation. Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the suitability of the current caffeine dosing regimen for the Chinese population using modelling and simulation approach. Methods: Pharmacokinetic samples were collected from 99 Chinese newborns with premature apnoea. The median (range) of gestational age and postmenstrual age were 28.3 (25.0–33.4) weeks and 31.1 (26.4–38.0) weeks, respectively. Newborns were receiving caffeine citrate at a loading dose of 20 mg/kg/d and a maintenance dose of 5–10 mg/kg/d. Caffeine concentrations and CYP1A2 polymorphisms were investigated. Population pharmacokinetic modelling of caffeine in Chinese preterm newborn on a population‐wide scale was conducted using NONMEM. Results: A 1‐compartment model with first‐order elimination was used to describe population pharmacokinetic. With current weight implemented using 0.75 allometric scaling, clearance (CL) was positively related to current weight and postmenstrual age, but a negative relationship was observed with serum creatinine concentration. Eight genotypes of CYP1A2 were tested and none of them had a significant impact on caffeine pharmacokinetic parameters. Interindividual variability of CL and volume of distribution was 7.70 and 65.9%. The median (range) of 95% confidence intervals of CL were 0.0128 (0.0128–0.0131) L/h/kg. Monte Carlo simulation demonstrated that 80% (loading dose) and 98% (maintenance dose) of premature infants treated with a labelled dosing regimen attained the concentration target range of 5–20 mg/L. Conclusion: A population PK model of caffeine was developed in Chinese newborns. Body weight‐implemented allometric scaling, postmenstrual age and serum creatinine concentration markedly affected caffeine clearance. Background: Strongyllodes variegatus (Fairmaire) is a major insect pest of oilseed rape in China. Despite its economic importance, the contribution of its population genetics in the development of any suitable protection control strategy for the management of oilseed rape crops is poorly studied. It is a much urgent need to prevent its spread to the rest of the world. Results: Using the sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb) as genetic markers, we analyzed the population genetic diversity and structure of 437 individuals collected from 15 S. variegatus populations located in different oilseed rape production areas in China. In addition, we estimated the demographic history using neutrality test and mismatch distribution analysis. The high level of genetic diversity was detected among the COI and Cytb sequences of S. variegatus. The population structure analyses strongly suggested three distinct genetic and geographical regions in China with limited gene flow. The Mantel test showed that the genetic distance was greatly influenced by the geographical distance. The demographic analyses showed that S. variegatus had experienced population fluctuation during the Pleistocene Epoch, which was likely to be related to the climatic changes. Conclusion: Overall, these results demonstrate that the strong genetic structure of S. variegatus populations in China, which is attributed by the isolation through the geographical distance among populations, their weak flight capacity and subsequent adaptation to the regional ecological conditions. Clay layers are common in subsurface where microbial activities play an important role in impacting the biogeochemical properties of adjacent aquifers. In this study, we analyzed the community structure and abundance of bacteria and archaea in response to geochemical properties of six clay sediments at different depths in a borehole (112°34′0″E, 30°36′21″N) of Jianghan Plain (JHP), China. Our results suggested that the top two clay layers were oxic, while the remaining bottom four clay layers were anoxic. Both high-throughput sequencing and qPCR of 16S rRNA gene showed relatively high abundance of archaea (up to 60%) in three of the anoxic clay layers. Furthermore, microbial communities in these clay sediments showed distinct vertical stratification, which may be impacted by changes in concentrations of sulfate, HCl-extractable Fe2+ and total organic carbon (TOC) in the sediments. In the upper two oxic clay layers, identification of phyla Thaumarchaeota (11.2%) and Nitrosporales (1.2%) implied nitrification in these layers. In the two anoxic clay layers beneath the oxic zone, high abundances of Anaeromyxobacter , Chloroflexi bacterium RBG 16_58_14 and Deltaproteobacteria, suggested the reductions of nitrate, iron and sulfate. Remarkably, a significant portion of Bathyarchaeota (∼25%) inhabited in the bottom two anoxic clay layers, which may indicate archaeal anaerobic degradation of TOC by these organisms. The results of this study provide the first systematic understandings of microbial activities in subsurface clay layers at JHP, which may help develop microorganism-based solutions for mitigating subsurface contaminations. This study describes a new species of the genus Leptobrachella, Leptobrachella suiyangensis sp. nov. from the Huoqiuba Nature Reserve, Suiyang County, Guizhou Province, China, based on morphological data and phylogenetic analyses (16S rRNA mtDNA). The new species can be distinguished from other congeners by the molecular divergence and by a combination of morphological characters, including body size, dorsal and ventral patterns, dorsal skin texture, size of the pectoral and femoral glands, degree of webbing and fringing on the toes and fingers, dorsum coloration, and iris coloration in life. Currently, the genus Leptobrachella contains 75 species, 21 of which are found in China, including seven species reported from Guizhou Province. The uncorrected sequence divergence percentage between Leptobrachella suiyangensis sp. nov. and all homologous DNA sequences available for the 16S rRNA gene was found to be >4.7%. The new record of the species and its relationships with others in the same genus imply that species distribution, habitat variation, environmental adaptation, and diversity of the genus Leptobrachella in southwest China need to be further investigated. Triplophysa baotianensis belong to the genus Triplophysa (Teleostei, Nemacheilidae), endemic to Guizhou Province, Southwestern China. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of T. baotianensis was sequenced and reported for the first time. The circular mitogenome was 16,576 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 1 non-coding control region. The overall base composition was 30.79% A, 27.62% T, 25.46% C, and 16.13% G with 41.59% GC content. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 40 species showed that all Triplophysa species clustered as one monophyletic clade, and T. baotianensis was the closest to (T. nasobarbatula + (T. rosa + T. xiangxiensis)). Purpose: Workplace thriving is a psychological state that promotes employee health and development. In addition to presenting a useful instrument that captures the nature of a thriving work life in China, the purpose of this paper is to investigate important factors that influence one's thriving status within this national context. Design/methodology/approach: Using diverse approaches across different samples, Study 1 contextualized the content of a workplace thriving scale (WTS) to fit the Chinese context. Study 2 tested the effects of learning goal orientation, exploration at work and role ambiguity on workplace thriving, employing a mediation model. As a supplement, Study 3 examined the test–retest reliability of workplace thriving. Findings: Study 1 confirmed that in the Chinese setting, workplace thriving is a higher order construct represented by both a sense of learning and a sense of vitality. Study 2 found that learning goal orientation and exploration at work fostered thriving, while role ambiguity reduced thriving. Also, exploration mediated the relationship between learning goal orientation and thriving. Study 3 verified that the WTS was reliable over time in the Chinese setting, further increasing the reliability of results from Studies 1 and 2. Originality/value: By rigorously and formally contextualizing the concept/construct of workplace thriving in China, this paper is informative for future research on thriving at work in Eastern cultures. Arsenic methylation is regarded as an effective way of arsenic detoxification. Current knowledge about arsenic biomethylation in high arsenic groundwater remains limited. In the present study, 16 high arsenic groundwater samples from deep wells of the Hetao Plain were investigated using clone library and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analyses of arsM genes as well as geochemical analysis. The concentrations of methylated arsenic (including monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA)) varied from 2.40 to 16.85 μg/L. Both bacterial and archaeal arsenic methylating populations were detected in the high arsenic aquifer. They were dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, Methanomicrobia and a large unidentified group. The abundances of predominant populations were correlated positively to either total organic carbon or total arsenic and arsenite concentrations. The arsM gene abundances in high arsenic groundwater ranged from below detection to 5.71 × 106 copies/L and accounted for 0-3.32‰ of total bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA genes. The arsM gene copies in high arsenic groundwater showed closely positive correlations with methylated arsenic concentrations. The overall results implied that arsenic methylating microorganisms were abundant and diverse in high arsenic groundwater. This was the first study of arsenic methylating microbial communities in high arsenic groundwater aquifers and might provide useful information for arsenic bioremediation in groundwater systems. This study examined how employee-orientated human resource management (EOHRM) is related to Chinese employees' voice. Drawing on the trust literature, we developed and tested an integrative model that involves the mediating role of trust in management in the effect of EOHRM on voice behavior and the moderating role of employees' moral identity in the EOHRM effects. Data were collected from 251 employees from a variety of occupations in China. Bootstrap-based regression analyses were used to test the research model. Results showed that trust in management partially mediated the relationship between EOHRM and voice behavior. The effect of EOHRM on trust in management and the indirect effect of EOHRM on voice behavior via trust were stronger in employees with higher rather than lower levels of moral identity. These findings suggest that organizations may promote employee voice by implementing HR policies and practices that focus on employees' personal and family needs and consider employees' moral identity. The problems with China's regional industrial overcapacity are often influenced by local governments. This study constructs a framework that includes the resource and environmental costs to analyze overcapacity using the non-radial direction distance function and the price method to measure industrial capacity utilization and market segmentation in 29 provinces in China from 2002 to 2014. The empirical analysis of the spatial panel econometric model shows that (1) the industrial capacity utilization in China's provinces has a ladder-type distribution with a gradual decrease from east to west and there is a severe overcapacity in the traditional heavy industry areas; (2) local government intervention has serious negative effects on regional industry utilization and factor market segmentation more significantly inhibits the utilization rate of regional industry than commodity market segmentation; (3) economic openness improves the utilization rate of industrial capacity while the internet penetration rate and regional environmental management investment have no significant impact; and(4) a higher degree of openness and active private economic development have a positive spatial spillover effect, while there is a significant negative spatial spillover effect from local government intervention and industrial structure sophistication. In an increasingly globalized world, organizations that operate in more than one country are a substantial part of the world economy. It is therefore beneficial to understand the attitudes of employees in different countries and their impact on the organization. One important area is organizational justice and its relationships with organizational trust (OT) and organizational commitment. This empirical study collected survey data from university employees across China, South Korea and Australia. We proposed that OT would mediate the relationships between affective organizational commitment (AOC) and both distributive justice (DJ) and procedural justice (PJ) in all three countries. In Australia, we found that PJ and AOC were significantly related, and OT fully mediated the PJ-AOC relationship. In China and South Korea, both DJ and PJ were significantly related to AOC, and OT fully mediated the PJ-AOC relationship. OT partially mediated the DJ-AOC relationship in China but fully mediated this relationship in South Korea. This study aimed to describe a new specimen of cavefish collected from a karst cave in the Daqikong area of Libo County, Guizhou. Twenty-six cavefish specimens were collected and identified as a new species of Balitoridae: Nemacheilinae, and named Oreonectes daqikongensis sp. n. A genetic analysis was performed and showed that its genetic distances from Oreonectes shuilongensis and Oreonectes platycephalus are higher than intraspecific distances. • High iodine groundwater occurs in discharge area of fluvial/lacustrine aquifer systems. • Local transformation of sediment Fe minerals explains the enrichment of pore-water iodine in the deep sediments. • Iodine-rich pore-water in the shallow sediments near the coastal area is related to the marine transgressions. The wide occurrence of high iodine groundwater is posing negative effects on human health. The land subsidence due to groundwater over-exploitation causes the release of iodine-rich pore-water trapped in clayey sediment into groundwater, however, the mechanisms of iodine enrichment in pore-water were still unclear. In this study, we selected the Datong Basin (DB) and North China Plain (NCP) with few and severe land subsidence, respectively, to understand the contributions of complex hydro-biogeochemical processes on the enrichment of iodine in groundwater and pore-water by using the inorganic/organic carbon isotope and batch experiments. The results showed that at the DB, the range of groundwater iodine was 4–2175 µg/L, and the enrichment of groundwater iodine is mainly related to the transformation of iron oxyhydroxides triggered by microbial degradation of organic matter, which was reflected by the more depleted δ13C DIC signatures of groundwater and gradual increasing trend of ratio of HCl-extractable Fe(II)/sediment Fe total and sediment δ13C DOC signatures with depth. In comparison, groundwater iodine at the NCP had the range of 2–1106 µg/L, and pore-water rich in iodine preserved in the clayey sediment serves as the main source. The depth profiles of sediment iron mineral fractions and δ13C DOC signatures suggested that the NCP sediments experienced lower degree of reductive transformation of iron minerals and microbial degradation of natural organic matter. At some specific depths higher than 300 m, the evident higher ratios of HCl-extractable Fe(II)/sediment Fe total indicate that the local transformation of iron minerals can explain the pore-water rich in iodine at deep sediments, which was supported by the results of microbial batch experiments. The pore-water with high iodine concentration preserved in the shallow sediment is more likely related to the marine transgressions. Background: Hitherto, a population-based analysis of the cause of death in urban areas of Western China has not been undertaken over an extended period. The aims of this study were to calculate the overall and annual cause-specific mortality rates by age and sex in urban areas of Western China from 2003 to 2012 and to evaluate the quality of the data.Methods: We used Excel software, cause-of-death registrations, and International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, codes to calculate the overall and yearly cause-specific crude mortality rates by age and sex, the Chinese age-standardized mortality rate, and life expectancies.Results: In the Jiulongpo District from 2003 to 2012, there was an increase in the number of death case reports in the census-registered population, a decrease in the number of omitted deaths, and rise in the crude mortality rate. Except for 2003, the Chinese age-standardized mortality rate was the lowest in 2012 (330.83/100,000) and highest in 2005 (390.08/100,000). Life expectancy increased from 78.36 years in 2005 to 81.67 years in 2012.Conclusions: With the development of its social economy, the Chinese government and public attach greater importance to cause-of-death surveillance. The quality of cause-of-death registrations has gradually increased, crude mortality rates have risen, the Chinese age-standardized mortality rate has fallen, and life expectancies have increased. This study is the first to examine the mechanism of the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and the moderating role of gender in relevant mechanisms. Analyses of 185 Chinese university students showed that EI could influence CDMSE through goal commitment (GC) and professional commitment, and male students exhibited a stronger relationship between EI and GC compared with female students. This study introduces a new perspective for career development research by establishing a mediation-based emotion-career framework and provides deeper insights for career counselors to assist clients in career decision processes. Arsenic biogeochemistry has been studied extensively in acid sulfate-chloride hot springs, but not in acid sulfate hot springs with low chloride. In this study, Zhenzhuquan in Tengchong geothermal area, a representative acid sulfate hot spring with low chloride, was chosen to study arsenic geochemistry and microbial community structure using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Over 0.3 million 16S rRNA sequence reads were obtained from 6-paired parallel water and sediment samples along its outflow channel. Arsenic oxidation occurred in the Zhenxhuquan pool, with distinctly high ratios of arsenate to total dissolved arsenic (0.73–0.86). Coupled with iron and sulfur oxidation along the outflow channel, arsenic accumulated in downstream sediments with concentrations up to 16.44 g/kg and appeared to significantly constrain their microbial community diversity. These oxidations might be correlated with the appearance of some putative functional microbial populations, such as Aquificae and Pseudomonas (arsenic oxidation), Sulfolobus (sulfur and iron oxidation), Metallosphaera and Acidicaldus (iron oxidation). Temperature, total organic carbon and dissolved oxygen significantly shaped the microbial community structure of upstream and downstream samples. In the upstream outflow channel region, most microbial populations were microaerophilic/anaerobic thermophiles and hyperthermophiles, such as Sulfolobus, Nocardia, Fervidicoccus, Delftia, and Ralstonia. In the downstream region, aerobic heterotrophic mesophiles and thermophiles were identified, including Ktedonobacteria, Acidicaldus, Chthonomonas and Sphingobacteria. A total of 72.41–95.91% unassigned-genus sequences were derived from the downstream high arsenic sediments 16S rRNA clone libraries. The phosphorus fractions and adsorption characteristics of seven floodplain sediment samples collected in the lower reaches of China’s Hanjiang River were studied. Most phosphorus fractions showed a marked downstream increase in response to point-source inputs from urban areas. Total phosphorus (TP) contents in the sediments ranged from 603.68 to 945.25 mg.kg−1. Inorganic phosphorus (IP) was the major component of TP, and calcium-bound phosphorus (Ca–P) was the major fraction of IP. The distribution characteristics of the phosphorus contents were affected by sediment grain size and hydrodynamic conditions. The maximum phosphorus adsorption capacities ( Q max) and the half-saturation concentration ( k) were obtained using an improved Langmuir model. Native adsorbed exchangeable phosphorus content ( w NAP) and the zero-equilibrium phosphorus concentration value ( c EPC0) were subsequently calculated. The effects of sediment grain size, temperature, and disturbance on the phosphorus adsorption isotherms were also studied. The results showed that phosphorus adsorption on floodplain sediments was primarily chemisorption; the particle concentration effect played a more important role at a disturbance intensity of 150 r.min−1 (on a shaker table) than at 100 r.min−1. Understanding chemical composition of organic matter in oil shales in detail is of importance to both organic geochemistry and efficient utilization of oil shales. Because of low boiling point and good penetrability, carbon disulfide was used for extraction of organic matter from solid fossils. In the present study, oil shale samples from Fushun, Longkou and Huadian deposits of China were extracted with carbon disulfide, and extraction solutions were analyzed with gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results show that alkanes, including a series of normal alkanes, isoprenoids and cyclanes, are predominant in extraction solutions. Other compounds detected in the extraction solutions are alkenes, alkylated arenes and organo-oxygen compounds. Normal alkanes are predominant in the carbon disulfide--extractable fraction (CDEF) from Huadian oil shale. CDEF from Longkou oil shale contains much more alkanes than those from other two oil shales, whereas CDEF from Fushun oil shale contains more cyclanes than those from other two oil shale deposits. The small mysid crustacean Neomysis awatschensis was collected in the west coast of Jinozhou Bay, Qingdao, China in 1992 and acclimated and cultured in laboratory conditions since then. Standard acute toxicity test using 4-6 d juvenile mysids of this species were conducted and the results were compared with Mysidopsis bahia, a standard toxicity organism used in the US in terms of their sensitivities to reference toxins, as well as their taxonomy, morphology and geographic distribution. Because of its wide distribution along the Chinese coast, similar sensitivity to pollutants as M. bahia, short life history, small size and the case of handling, this study intended to us N. awatschensis as one of the standard marine organism for toxicity testing in China. The species were applied to acute toxicity evaluations of drilling fluid and its additives, organotin TPT and toxic algae, and to chronic (life cycle) toxicity assays of organotin TPT and toxic dinofalgellate Alexandrium tamarense, respectively. • A sensitive HPLC-MS / MS detection method has been adopted. • This is the first time to study the pharmacokinetics of murrayone extracted from Murraya paniculata (L.). • The successful study could provide important insights into potential therapeutics of murrayone. Murraya paniculata (L.) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wildly grown in southeast China, and used for abortion in folk. Murrayone, a coumarin-containing compound extracted from M. paniculata, is the most bioactive substance in this species and is being developed as a novel cancer metastasis chemopreventive agent based on its unique pharmacological properties. In the present study, a novel rapid and sensitive method for quantitative analysis of murrayone in rat plasma and for determining its pharmacokinetics in rats was developed and validated using UPLC/MS/MS. Plasma samples were subjected to protein precipitation and then directly analyzed by UPLC/MS/MS. Both murrayone and coumarin as an internal standard (I.S.) were carried on a C 18 column with a gradient mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and water at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Several gradient elution procedures were evaluated to achieve effective chromatography resolution and a sensitive response to murrayone and the I.S.. Mass spectrometry was carried out using a triple-quadrupole system via positive electrospray ionization and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). Good linearity (r 2 = 0.9987) was achieved over a linear range of 4.0–1600 ng/mL with a lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) of 4.0 ng/mL for murrayone. The inter- and intraday accuracy and precision ranged from 90.0 to 99.7% and 1.1 to 12.3% at four quality control concentrations, respectively. The average absolute recoveries of murrayone and the I.S. were determined to be 85.9–92.4% and 86.5–90.7%, respectively, at 10.0, 80.0, and 800 ng/mL. Murrayone was stable under a variety of storage and processing conditions that may be routinely encountered in laboratories based on all the stability tests. This newly developed method was successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic study of murrayone in rats for the first time, and the current assay methodology could provide important insights into potential therapeutics and facilitate further pharmacodynamic explorations of murrayone. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), the conversion of N 2 into bioavailable nitrogen (N), is the main process for replenishing N loss in the biosphere. However, BNF in groundwater systems remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the activity, abundance, and community composition of diazotrophs in groundwater in the Hetao Plain of Inner Mongolia using 15 N tracing methods, reverse transcription qPCR (RT-qPCR), and metagenomic/metatranscriptomic analyses. 15 N 2 tracing incubation of near in situ groundwater (9.5-585.4 nmol N L -1 h -1 ) and N 2 -fixer enrichment and isolates (13.2-1728.4 nmol N g -1 h -1 , as directly verified by single-cell resonance Raman spectroscopy), suggested that BNF is a non-negligible source of N in groundwater in this region. The expression of nifH genes ranged from 3.4 × 10 3 to 1.2 × 10 6 copies L -1 and was tightly correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO), Fe(II), and NH 4 + . Diazotrophs in groundwater were chiefly aerobes or facultative anaerobes, dominated by Stutzerimonas, Pseudomonas, Paraburkholderia, Klebsiella, Rhodopseudomonas, Azoarcus, and additional uncultured populations. Active diazotrophs, which prefer reducing conditions, were more metabolically diverse and potentially associated with nitrification, sulfur/arsenic mobilization, Fe(II) transport, and CH 4 oxidation. Bacterial sulfate reduction plays a crucial role in the mobilization of toxic substances in aquifers. However, the role of bacterial sulfate reduction on iodine mobilization in geogenic high-iodine groundwater systems has been unexplored. In this study, the enrichment of groundwater δ 34 S SO4 (15.56 to 69.31‰) and its significantly positive correlation with iodide and total iodine concentrations in deep groundwater samples of the North China Plain suggested that bacterial sulfate reduction participates in the mobilization of groundwater iodine. Similar significantly positive correlations were further observed between the concentrations of iodide and total iodine and the relative abundance of the dsrB gene by qPCR, as well as the composition and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) predicted from 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing data. Subsequent batch culture experiments by the SRB Desulfovibrio sp. B304 demonstrated that SRB could facilitate iodine mobilization through the enzyme-driven biotic and sulfide-driven abiotic reduction of iodate to iodide. In addition, the dehalogenation of organoiodine compounds by SRB and the reductive dissolution of iodine-bearing iron minerals by biogenic sulfide could liberate bound or adsorbed iodine into groundwater. The role of bacterial sulfate reduction in iodine mobilization revealed in this study provides new insights into our understanding of iodide enrichment in iodine-rich aquifers worldwide.

Microorganisms play crucial roles in the global iodine cycling through iodine oxidation, reduction, volatilization, and deiodination. In contrast to iodate formation in radionuclide-contaminated groundwater by the iodine-oxidizing bacteria, microbial contribution to the formation of high level of iodide in geogenic high iodine groundwater is poorly understood. In this study, our results of comparative metagenomic analyses of deep groundwater with typical high iodide concentrations in the North China Plain revealed the existence of putative dissimilatory iodate-reducing idrABP1P2 gene clusters in groundwater. Heterologous expression and characterization of an identified idrABP1P2 gene cluster confirmed its functional role in iodate reduction. Thus, microbial dissimilatory iodate reduction could contribute to iodide formation in geogenic high iodine groundwater. In addition, the identified iron-reducing, sulfur-reducing, sulfur-oxidizing, and dehalogenating bacteria in the groundwater could contribute to the release and production of iodide through the reductive dissolution of iron minerals, abiotic iodate reduction of derived ferrous iron and sulfide, and dehalogenation of organic iodine, respectively. These microbially mediated iodate reduction and organic iodine dehalogenation processes may also result in the transformation among iodine species and iodide enrichment in other geogenic iodine-rich groundwater systems worldwide.

The clay layer is a source to facilitate arsenic (As) enrichment in the aquifer. However, little is known about microbial processes in the clay layer and their roles in As mobilization in the underlying aquifer. In this study, high-throughput sequencing of full-length 16S rRNA gene and metagenomics were used to characterize the microbial composition and functional potential in a sediment borehole across the clay and sand layers in Hetao Basin, Inner Mongolia, China. Results showed the significant differences between the clay layer and underlying sand layer in the geochemistry, microbial composition and functional potential. Fermentation, Fe(III) reduction, As(V) reduction, sulfate reduction, thiosulfate disproportionation, reductive tricarboxylic acid and Wood-Ljungdahl pathway identified in sediments from the clay layer were positively correlated to the observed high levels of TOC, soluble ammonium, H 3 PO 4 -extractable As(III) and As(V) and HCl-extractable Fe(II). Although the microbial compositions of the clay and sand layers were different, the microbial functional potential at the interface between the clay and sand layers was similar with the characteristics of fermentation, ammonification and As(V) reduction. The similarity of microbial functional potential at the interface may be attributable to the interaction between the sand and adjacent clay layer with the fluctuation of groundwater level. Arsenic (As) mobilization in groundwater involves biogeochemical cycles of carbon, iron, and sulfur. However, few studies have focused on the role of nitrogen-metabolizing bacteria in As mobilization, as well as in the transformation between inorganic and organic As in groundwater. In this study, the nitrogen and As metabolisms of Citrobacter sp. G-C1 and Paraclostridium sp. G-11, isolated from high As groundwater in Hetao Plain, China, were characterized by culture experiments and genome sequencing. The results showed Citrobacter sp. G-C1 was a dissimilatory nitrate-reducing bacterium. The dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) and As-detoxifying pathways identified in the genome enabled Citrobacter sp. G-C1 to simultaneously reduce As(V) during DNRA. Paraclostridium sp. G-11 was a nitrogen-fixing bacterium and its nitrogen-fixing activity was constrained by As. Nitrogen fixation and the As-detoxifying pathways identified in its genome conferred the capability of As(V) reduction during nitrogen fixation. Under anaerobic conditions, Citrobacter sp. G-C1 was able to demethylate organic As and Paraclostridium sp. G-11 performed As(III) methylation with the arsM gene. Collectively, these results not only evidenced that ammonium-generating bacteria with the ars operon were able to transform As(V) to more mobile As(III) during nitrogen-metabolizing processes, but also involved the transformation between inorganic and organic As in groundwater.

Objectives: Norovirus is associated with one-fifth of all gastroenteritis cases, but basic epidemiological data is lacking, especially in developing countries. As long-term surveillance on norovirus gastroenteritis is scarce in western China, this study aims to update the epidemiological knowledge of norovirus gastroenteritis and to characterize the genotypes of norovirus strains., Methods: Stool samples were collected from hospitalized children under 5 years old with gastroenteritis in Chengdu, China. All samples were tested for norovirus as well as rotavirus, sapovirus, enteric adenovirus, and astrovirus by real-time RT-PCR. RdRp and VP1 genes were sequenced in norovirus-positive samples to investigate viral phylogenies., Results: Of the 1181 samples collected from 2015 to 2019, 242 (20.5%) were positive for norovirus. Among norovirus-positive cases, 65 cases had co-infection with another virus; norovirus/enteric adenovirus was most frequently detected (50.8%, 33/65). The highest positive rate was observed in children aged 13-18 months (23.7%, 68/287). Norovirus infection peaked in autumn (36.6%, 91/249), followed by summer (20.3%, 70/345). Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlation between the norovirus-positive rate and humidity (r = 0.773, P < 0.05). Objective: To analyze the screening results of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and gene mutation distribution of G6PD deficiency in preterm infants in Chengdu, China, in order to provide a basis for the improvement of G6PD screening process in preterm infants., Methods: Fluorescent spot test for G6PD deficiency using dried blood spots was used for G6PD screening of 54 025 preterm infants born from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019 in Chengdu, and G6PD enzymology and gene detection were used for the diagnosis of 213 infants with positive screening results., Results: Among the 54 025 preterm infants, 192 were diagnosed with G6PD deficiency, with an incidence rate of 3.55‰. The incidence rate of G6PD deficiency in preterm infants was higher than that in full-term infants in the same period of time and tended to increase year by year. Birth in summer, gestational age <32 weeks, and birth weight <2 500 g were influencing factors for the increase in false positive rate of screening ( P < 0.05). The diagnostic accordance rate of genetic tests was significantly higher than that of enzyme activity assay in female infants ( P < 0.05). Nine gene mutations were detected in Chengdu, without compound heterozygous mutation. Homozygous mutation was not detected in female infants. In the 80 infants with gene mutations, the top three gene mutations were c.1388G>A in 26 infants (32%), c.1376G>T in 21 infants (26%), and c.1024C>T in 13 infants (16%), accounting for 75%. There was a significant difference in pathogenicity grading among the three gene mutations ( P < 0.001). The pairwise comparison showed that c.1024C>T had a significantly lower pathogenicity grade than c.1376G>T and c.1388G>A ( P < 0.0167), suggesting that c.1376G>T and c.1388G>A had greater influence on enzyme activity than c.1024C>T., Conclusions: Screening for G6PD deficiency in preterm infants should be taken seriously. It is recommended to apply cold-chain transportation of samples in summer to reduce the false positive rate of primary screening for G6PD deficiency. Genetic tests should be promoted in girls with positive screening results to improve the detection rate of G6PD deficiency in preterm female infants. There are various types of gene mutations in preterm infants with G6PD deficiency in Chengdu, and infants with c.1024C>T mutation tend to have mild conditions.

Context.—: Covert severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections could be seeding new outbreaks. How to identify asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections early has become a global focus., Objective.—: To explore the roles of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies detection, nucleic acid tests, and computed tomography (CT) scanning to identify asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection., Design.—: The clinical data of 389 individuals with close contacts, including in general characteristics, SARS-CoV-2 etiology, serum-specific IgM and IgG antibody detection and CT imaging results, were systematically analyzed., Results.—: The present study showed that only 89 of 389 individuals with close contacts were positive after the first nucleic acid test, while 300 individuals were still negative after 2 nucleic acid tests. Among the 300 individuals, 75 did not have pneumonia, and the other 225 individuals had pulmonary imaging changes. A total of 143 individuals were eventually diagnosed as having asymptomatic infection through IgM antibody and IgG antibody detection. The sensitivity, specificity, and false-negative rate of IgM and IgG antibody detection were approximately 97.1% (347 of 357), 95.3% (204 of 214), and 4.67% (10 of 214), respectively. It also indicated that during approximately 2 weeks, most individuals were both IgM positive and IgG positive, accounting for 68.57% (72 of 105). During approximately 3 weeks, the proportion of IgM-positive and IgG-positive individuals decreased to 8.57% (9 of 105), and the proportion of IgM-negative and IgG-positive individuals increased to 76.19% (80 of 105)., Conclusions.—: There are highlighted prospects of IgM/IgG antibody detection as a preferred method in identifying the individuals with asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially combined with nucleic acid tests and pulmonary CT scanning., (© 2021 College of American Pathologists.)

This study developed and tested a model, which involves the effects of work-family conflicts on job satisfaction and job performance of construction professionals, with a focus on the mediating role of affective organizational commitment. A structured questionnaire survey was conducted among construction professionals in China, resulting in 317 valid responses. The results, generated from structural equation modelling, revealed two interrelated dimensions of work-family conflicts, work's interfering with family life and family life's interfering with work. We found these two types of work-family conflicts directly, negatively affected affective organizational commitments and job satisfaction but not job performance. Additionally, affective organizational commitment positively affected job satisfaction and job performance, and mediated the effects of work-family conflicts on job satisfaction. This study advances our understanding of how or why work-family conflicts produce dysfunctional effects on employees' job outcomes in the context of construction projects.

A survey was carried out on the microbial community of 20 groundwater samples (4 low and 16 high arsenic groundwater) and 19 sediments from three boreholes (two high arsenic and one low arsenic boreholes) in a high arsenic groundwater system located in Hetao Basin, Inner Mongolia, using the 454 pyrosequencing approach. A total of 233,704 sequence reads were obtained and classified into 12-267 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Groundwater and sediment samples were divided into low and high arsenic groups based on measured geochemical parameters and microbial communities, by hierarchical clustering and principal coordinates analysis. Richness and diversity of the microbial communities in high arsenic sediments are higher than those in high arsenic groundwater. Microbial community structure was significantly different either between low and high arsenic samples or between groundwater and sediments. Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter and Alishewanella were the top four genera in high arsenic groundwater, while Thiobacillus, Pseudomonas, Hydrogenophaga, Enterobacteriaceae, Sulfuricurvum and Arthrobacter dominated high arsenic sediments. Archaeal sequences in high arsenic groundwater were mostly related to methanogens. Biota-environment matching and co-inertia analyses showed that arsenic, total organic carbon, SO4(2-), SO4(2-)/total sulfur ratio, and Fe(2+) were important environmental factors shaping the observed microbial communities. The results of this study expand our current understanding of microbial ecology in high arsenic groundwater aquifers and emphasize the potential importance of microbes in arsenic transformation in the Hetao Basin, Inner Mongolia.

A survey of bacterial and archaeal community structure was carried out in 10 shallow tube wells in a high arsenic groundwater system located in Hetao Basin, Inner Mongolia by 16S rRNA gene based two-step nested PCR-DGGE, clone libraries and 454 pyrosequencing. 12 bacterial and 18 archaeal DGGE bands and 26-136 species-level OTUs were detected for all the samples. 299 bacterial and 283 archaeal 16S rRNA gene clones for two typical samples were identified by phylogenetic analysis. Most of the results from these different methods were consistent with the dominant bacterial populations. But the proportions of the microbial populations were mostly different and the bacterial communities in most of these samples from pyrosequencing were both more abundant and more diverse than those from the traditional methods. Even after quality filtering, pyrosequencing revealed some populations including Alishewanella, Sulfuricurvum, Arthrobacter, Sporosarcina and Algoriphagus which were not detected with traditional techniques. The most dominant bacterial populations in these samples identified as some arsenic, iron, nitrogen and sulfur reducing and oxidizing related populations including Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Brevundimonas, Massilia, Planococcus, and Aquabacterium and archaeal communities Nitrosophaera and Methanosaeta. Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas were distinctly abundant in most of these samples. Methanogens were found as the dominant archeal population with three methods. From the results of traditional methods, the dominant archaeal populations apparently changed from phylum Thaumarchaeota to Euryarchaeota with the arsenic concentrations increasing. But this structure dynamic change was not revealed with pyrosequencing. Our results imply that an integrated approach combining the traditional methods and next generation sequencing approaches to characterize the microbial communities in high arsenic groundwater is recommended.

Vertical distribution of bacterial communities was detected in high arsenic (As) sediments in a representative high As area in Inner Mongolia. Nineteen sediment samples were collected from a 30 m borehole and detected by geochemistry and molecular ecological approaches including polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), 16S rRNA gene clone library and 454 pyrosequencing. As contents ranged from 42.1 to 111.3 mg kg(-1) which fluctuated with different depth and significantly high in clay and mild clay sediment samples at depth of 8, 20, 25 and 28 m respectively. The ratios of As(III) to total As generally increased with depth but As(V) dominated in all sediment samples. High concentrations of total As, sulfur, iron and total organic carbon were generally found in clay and low in sand samples. Both DGGE patterns and 454 pyrosequencing results indicated that bacterial communities dynamically diversified with increasing depth and were dominated by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi. Most of the sediment samples were dominated by populations including Sporosarcina, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Halomonas, Polaromonas, Paenibacillus and Flavobacterium. These populations were found with high similarities with those microbes capable of denitrification, sulfur oxidation, organic matter degradation and As resistance and reduction. These results implied that microbes might play an important role in As mobilization in the shallow aquifers of Hetao Plain, Inner Mongolia.

A total of 12 samples were collected from the Tengchong geothermal areas of Yunnan, China, with the goal to assess the arsenite (AsIII) oxidation potential of the extant microbial communities as inferred by the abundance and diversity of the AsIII oxidase large subunit gene aioA relative to geochemical context. Arsenic concentrations were higher (on average 251.68 μg/L) in neutral or alkaline springs than in acidic springs (on average 30.88 μg/L). aioA abundance ranged from 1.63 × 10(1) to 7.08 × 10(3) per ng of DNA and positively correlated with sulfide and the ratios of arsenate (AsV):total dissolved arsenic (AsTot). Based on qPCR estimates of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene abundance, aioA-harboring organisms comprised as much as ~15% of the total community. Phylogenetically, the major aioA sequences (270 total) in the acidic hot springs (pH 3.3-4.4) were affiliated with Aquificales and Rhizobiales, while those in neutral or alkaline springs (pH 6.6-9.1) were inferred to be primarily bacteria related to Thermales and Burkholderiales. Interestingly, aioA abundance at one site greatly exceeded bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance, suggesting these aioA genes were archaeal even though phylogenetically these aioA sequences were most similar to the Aquificales. In summary, this study described novel aioA sequences in geothermal features geographically far removed from those in the heavily studied Yellowstone geothermal complex.

Objectives: To determine the factors influencing length of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay among premature infants born after preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) with 24-34 weeks of gestation., Methods: Characteristic parameters of the pregnant women with PPROM and their premature infants were analyzed retrospectively using univariate and multivariate analysis., Results: The overall rate of PPROM was 1.3% (323/24,173), of which 19.2% (62/323) were premature infants with sepsis. Overall, the median NICU stay of the premature infants was 11 days. Multiple factor regression analysis identified factors influencing length of stay in premature infants: gestational age (β = -0.172, P = 0.000), parturition modes (β = -0.115, P = 0.000), infant's birth weight (β =  -0.728, P = 0.000), infant's discharge weight (β = 0.443, P = 0.000), bacterial culture of cord blood (β = -0.100, P = 0.011) and sepsis (β = 0.192, P = 0.000). Additionally, latency period of sepsis diagnosis in neonatal sepsis between negative and positive cord blood culture was significantly discrepant, and 98.1% specificity and 84.4% positive predictive value for cord blood culture., Conclusion: We have identified several predictive factors for length of stay in cases of premature infants after PPROM, of which cord blood culture can be used as an additional diagnostic test to detect newborns at risk of infections, and be valuable in clinical application and generalization among neonate sepsis.

Many reports have shown that the biologic rhythm could be altered due to mutations of circadian gene hClock or hPeriod, and the mutations of circadian genes have some relationship with psychosis according to recent studies. A preliminary study has been conducted to examine wether the T3111C single nucleotide polymorphism of the hClock gene or the length polymorphism of the hPer3 gene is associated with the development of schizophrenia. The samples from schizophrenics (n=148, male: 57.4%, female: 42.6%) and normal controls (n=199, male: 59.3%, female: 40.7%) were examined. Allele frequencies of T3111C SNP of hClock were significantly different between schizophrenics and controls (χ2=19.738, P<0.05). Schizophrenics had a significantly higher frequency of the C allele compared with controls (OR=2.613, 95% CI=1.693-4.034). On the other hand, there is no significant difference of allele frequencies of 18 exon of hper3 between schizophrenics and controls (χ2=0.192, P>0.05). Our results suggest that the T3111C (RS1801260) polymorphism of hClock gene is associated with schizophrenia, but it seems that the length polymorphism of 18 exon of hPer3 may not be associated with schizophrenia. It is important to address of the relationship between circadian gene polymorphisms and dopamine functions in further study.

It has been suggested that some animals are much more capable of perceiving certain kinds of geophysical stimuli which may precede earthquakes than humans, but the anecdotal phenomena or stories about unusual animal behaviors prior to an earthquake should be interpreted with objective data. During the Wenchuan magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened in Wenchuan county (31.0 degrees north latitude, 103.4 degrees east longitude) of Sichuan province, China, on May 12, 2008, eight mice were monitored for locomotor activity and circadian rhythm in constant darkness with temperature 22-24 degrees C and humidity 55-65% for 38 days. The ongoing monitoring of locomotor activity of mice in our laboratory made it possible to design a posteriori study investigating whether the earthquake was associated with any change in animal behavior. Based on analyzing the recorded data with single cosinor, we found that the locomotor activity dramatically decreased in six of these eight mice on day 3 before the earthquake, and the circadian rhythm of their locomotor activity was no longer detected. The behavioral change lasted for 6 days before the locomotor activity returned to its original state. Analyses of concurrent geomagnetic data showed a higher total intensity during the span when the circadian rhythm in locomotor activity weakened. These results indicated that the behaviors, including circadian rhythm and activity, in these mice indeed changed prior to the earthquake, and the behavioral change might be associated with a change of geomagnetic intensity.
