As Chinese shows both satellite- and verb-framed properties (Slobin, 2004; Talmy, 2012, 2016), it provides a unique lens through which to observe the extent of first-language (L1) typological influence in second language (L2) acquisition of motion expressions. This study has dual purposes. First, it extends Wu's (2016) investigation on motion expressions produced by 80 L1 satellite-framed English learners of L2 Chinese to include newly collected data produced by L1 verb-framed speakers, a sample comprised of 41 L1 Japanese learners of Chinese and 40 Japanese native speakers. Second, it synthesizes the data from both studies and comprehensively examines factors that have been proposed to affect development of L2 thinking-for-speaking (TFS) patterns. The results show that development of L2 TFS is best predicted by learners' L1 type, but the effect is mitigated by L2 proficiency. While the L1 English learners outperform L1 Japanese learners in their development of target-like L2 Chinese TFS, learners with limited L2 proficiency in both groups tend to adopt verb-framed strategies to express only the core path information of a motion event and leave out the manner details. Analysis of L1 Japanese learners' oral narratives in L1 Japanese and L2 Chinese also shows that reverse L2-to-L1 transfer is less likely to happen when learning a typologically closer L2 that requires minimal restructuring of their L1 TFS.

College English teaching is supposed to cover both language acquisition and culture learning due to the close relationship between language and culture, taking cultural teaching as an indispensible part of college English courses. With the rapid integration of information technology and English curriculum, artificial intelligence has brought new opportunities to college English teaching, and college English cultural teaching methods are now faced with new innovations. In the age of intelligence, to promote teaching quality and learning effect, artificial intelligence technology can be embedded in English teaching practice, exerting its technical advantages and frontier characteristics. In consideration of integrated developing tendency of college English cultural teaching model and modern information technology, the paper is aimed to design and build up an intelligence-aided system so as to extend the depth and width of the application of modern information technology in college English cultural teaching as well as to exploit the great application potential of modern information technology in college English cultural teaching, thus opening a new way and presenting a direction for college English cultural teaching.

In this study, we examined the short-term variation in the abundance of copepod Acartia specimens, identified previously as Acartia pacifica, in Laizhou Bay, an estuarine bay in the southern Bohai Sea in northern China. Monthly samples were collected from May 2011 to April 2012, excluding December 2011 and January to February 2012 due to ice. Based on its morphological characteristics, Acartia ohtsukai was distinguishable from A. pacifica for the first time in Laizhou Bay. A. ohtsukai was sporadically present from summer to autumn, with the highest abundance and occurrence in September. It appeared in June when the water temperature was above 20°C, and disappeared in November when the water temperature decreased to less than 10°C. During the surveyed months, A. ohtsukai was more commonly found inshore with salinity less than 28 than offshore in the bay. Correlation analysis revealed that temperature and chlorophyll a concentration significantly influenced the monthly variations in A. ohtsukai abundance. We also compared the occurrence of A. ohtsukai with that of three species from the genus Tortanus (Tortanus derjugini, Tortanus forcipatus, and Tortanus spinicaudatus) in Laizhou Bay. The coexistence of A. ohtsukai and T. derjugini in the bay suggests that their ecological habitats are similar to those of brackish-water species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red dragon fruit is gaining popularity globally due to its nutritional value and bioactive components. The study aimed to assess the phytochemical, nutritional composition, antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic properties of extracts from the South Chinese red dragon fruit peel, flesh, and seeds. Extract fractions with increasing polarity (ethyl acetate50 values ranging from 3.25–8.30 μg/mL. The flesh MT and ET extract fractions demonstrated substantial inhibitory effects, with MIC50 ranging 73.62–98.85 μg/mL, against several multidrug-resistant bacteria. Cytotoxicity assays revealed no adverse effects of the crude extract fractions on human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells (from adult human skin). Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analyses unveiled a wide array of compounds with known and unknown antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Thereafter, pharmacological property screening and molecular docking were performed. The results identified four active compounds, baicalein, quercetin, morin, and isorhamnetin, which demonstrated strong binding affinity with the selected target proteins and complied with most of the pharmacological parameters. In conclusion, this study provides essential information on the key nutrients present in the peel, flesh, and seeds of the red dragon fruit from Southern-China. Identifying and protecting hotspots of endemism and species richness is crucial for mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, our understanding of spatial diversity patterns is far from complete, which severely limits our ability to conserve biodiversity hotspots. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of amphibian species diversity in China, one of the most species-rich countries on Earth. Our study combines 20 y of field surveys with new molecular analyses of 521 described species and also identifies 100 potential cryptic species. We identify 10 hotspots of amphibian diversity in China, each with exceptional species richness and endemism and with exceptional phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic endemism (based on a new time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny for Chinese amphibians). These 10 hotspots encompass 59.6% of China's described amphibian species, 49.0% of cryptic species, and 55.6% of species endemic to China. Only four of these 10 hotspots correspond to previously recognized biodiversity hotspots. The six new hotspots include the Nanling Mountains and other mountain ranges in South China. Among the 186 species in the six new hotspots, only 9.7% are well covered by protected areas and most (88.2%) are exposed to high human impacts. Five of the six new hotspots are under very high human pressure and are in urgent need of protection. Background: Adverse psychological states in surgical patients can impact outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate mood disorders and associated factors in general surgery inpatients using the Huaxi Emotional Distress Index (HEI). Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed HEI scores of 20,398 adult patients hospitalized for elective surgery at a tertiary hospital in China (2018–2021). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression identified factors linked to moderate/severe mood disturbances. Results: Factors linked to moderate/severe mood disturbances were identified through univariable and multivariable logistic regression. The results showed that 3.7% of the patients had HEI ≥  13, indicating significant emotional issues. The mean age was 52.67 (16.14) years in the group with no/mild distress and 59.65 (16.34) years in the group with moderate/severe distress. Among all the cases included, there were 2,689 cases (13.18%) of gastric and esophageal diseases, 1,437 cases (7.04%) of hepatic diseases, 913 cases (4.47%) of periampullary and pancreatic tumors, 9,150 cases (44.85%) of gallbladder diseases, 2,777 cases (13.61%) of colorectal diseases, and 3,432 cases (16.83%) of other diseases. The male percentage was 45.5 and 54.9% in the two groups, respectively. Older age, male gender, unstable occupations, lower education, and unmarried status were associated with higher risks of mood disturbances (all p  <  0.05). A significant downward trend in adverse emotions was observed with increasing education levels (p  <  0.001). Furthermore, the study found that the inpatients had higher HEI scores prior to the COVID-19 pandemic compared to during the pandemic (p  <  0.001). However, the occurrence of adverse mood states in these patients was not exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The trend test remained highly significant in the none-adjusted, age-sex adjusted, and fully adjusted models (all p for trend <0.001). Conclusion: The implementation of routine screening in higher education institutions (HEIs) allows for the early identification of surgical inpatients who require psychological intervention. It is recommended that counseling services focus on individuals with lower levels of education and income instability in order to address negative mood states. In December 2022, the Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) became dominant in China due to its high infectivity and lower mortality rate. The risk of critical illness and mortality among patients with hematologic malignancies who contracted SARS-CoV-2 was particularly high. The aim of this study was to draft a consensus to facilitate effective treatments for these patients based on the type and severity of the disease. Following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China, a steering committee consisting of experienced hematologists was formed by the Specialized Committee of Oncology and Microecology of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. The expert group drafted a consensus on the management and intervention measures for different types of hematologic malignancies based on the clinical characteristics of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, along with relevant guidelines and literature. The expert group drafted independent recommendations on several important aspects based on the epidemiology of the Omicron variant in China and the unique vulnerability of patients with hematologic malignancies. These included prophylactic vaccinations for those with hematologic malignancies, the use of plasma from blood donors who recovered from the novel coronavirus infection, the establishment of negative pressure wards, the use of steady-state mobilization of peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells, the provision of psychological support for patients and medical staff, and a focus on maintaining a healthy intestinal microecology. Attribution of compound events informs preparedness for emerging hazards with disproportionate impacts. However, the task remains challenging because space-time interactions among extremes and uncertain dynamic changes are not satisfactorily addressed in the well-established attribution framework. For attributing the 2020 record-breaking spatially compounding flood-heat event in China, we conduct a storyline attribution analysis by designing simulation experiments via a weather forecast model, quantifying component-based attributable changes, and comparing with historical flow analogs. We quantify that given the large-scale circulation, anthropogenic influence to date has exacerbated the extreme Mei-yu rainfall in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River during June-July 2020 by ~6.5% and warmed the co-occurring seasonal extreme heat in South China by ~1°C. Our projections show a further intensification of the compound event by the end of this century, with moderate emissions making the rainfall totals ~14% larger and the season ~2.1°C warmer in South China than the 2020 status. Introduction: This cross-sectional study evaluated the involvement of patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) in treatment decision-making, assessed the treatment efficacy according to their self-reports, and investigated the influencing factors. Methods: Patients with advanced CRC were recruited from 19 hospitals from March 2020 to March 2021 by a multi-stage multi-level sampling method. A selfdesigned questionnaire was used to collect demographic and clinical characteristics, involvement of CRC patients in treatment decision-making, treatment methods, and self-reported efficacy. Univariate and unordered multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the factors affecting the involvement in treatment decision-making and self-reported efficacy. Results: We enrolled 4533 patients with advanced CRC. The average age at diagnosis was 58.7 ± 11.8 years. For the treatment method, 32.4% of patients received surgery combined with chemotherapy, 13.1% of patients underwent surgery combined with chemotherapy and targeted therapy, and 9.7% of patients were treated with surgery alone. For treatment decision-making, 7.0% of patients were solely responsible for decision-making, 47.0% of patients shared treatment decision-making with family members, 19.0% of patients had family members solely responsible for treatment decision-making, and 27.0% of patients had their physicians solely responsible for treatment decision-making. Gender, age, education level, family income, marital status, treatment cost, hospital type, and treatment method were significantly associated with the involvement of patients in treatment decision-making. A total of 3824 patients submitted selfreported efficacy evaluations during treatment. The percentage of patients with good self-reported efficacy was 76.5% (for patients treated for the first time), 61.7% (for patients treated for the second time), and 43.2% (for patients treated after recurrence and metastasis), respectively. Occupation, education level, average annual family income, place of residence, time since cancer diagnosis, hospital type, clinical stage, targeted therapy, and involvement in treatment decision-making were the main influencing factors of self-reported efficacy of treatment. Discussion: Conclusively, CRC patients are not highly dominant in treatment decision-making and more likely to make treatment decisions with their family and doctors. External forcing is the driving force of climate system, which has significant impact on long-term climate changes. Unlike in the Global Climate Models whose external forcing is clearly prescribed, whether or not to use spatial-temporal varying external forcing to force the Regional Climate Models (RCMs) is still lacking evaluations. Here we modify the regional climate model WRF v3.8.1 to include all kinds of spatial-temporal varying external forcing components, and further investigate the impact of dynamical forcing on the long-term simulation in China. The results showed that different external forcing configurations in WRF could result in a variation range of 0.08 °C/10a for annual temperature trend and 19.9 mm/10a for annual precipitation trend in Eastern China (EC), whose impact was stronger than parameterization schemes but was weaker than spectral nudging. The influence of spectral nudging on long-term trend also depended on the configuration of parameterization schemes and external forcing. The WRF model could reasonably reproduce the forcing response pattern of temperature, precipitation, and associated radiative and circulation anomaly changes. The forced annual temperature trend in China could be roughly explained by the linear superposition of GHGs and anthropogenic aerosols, while the forcing response pattern of summer precipitation trend was mainly determined by anthropogenic aerosols. Therefore, we recommend that when using RCMs for long-term simulations, one should first run a long-term preliminary test to determine whether or not to use nudging, and it is better to use all set of varying forcing components than to use varying GHGs only. The middle Eocene climatic optimum (MECO, ca. ~42 Ma) is a key time period for understanding Cenozoic cooling of the global climate. Still, midlatitude terrestrial records of climate evolution during MECO epoch are rare. In this study, continuous high-resolution record of shale sediments in mid-Eocene Shahejie Formation (MES shales) in the Bohai Bay Basin were performed with major-element and wavelet analysis. The midlatitude paleoweathering and paleoclimatic evolution during MECO epoch were analyzed in this study. The MES shales experienced weak-moderate paleoweathering under a subtropical monsoon paleoclimate with mean annual temperature of 8.3-12.9 °C and mean annual precipitation of 685-1100 mm/yr. The MES shales record a mixed provenance involving intermediate igneous rocks, and low compositional maturity. The nutrient-rich environment led to enrichment in organic matter in the MES shales. Wavelet analysis revealed good periodicity about the paleoclimate and weathering during MECO epoch. In the stage I of MES shales depositional process, the paleolake was high in nutrients, and the MES shales experienced high chemical weathering due to a relatively warmer and more humid climate. In contrast, the climate in stage II was relatively cold and dry, and the maturity of the MES shales was relatively high during this stage, suggesting a relatively stable tectonic background. This work provides more terrestrial records of MECO epoch for midlatitude region, and is benefit for better understanding of the palaeoenvironment when MES shales formed. Background: Aedes albopictus, commonly known as the tiger mosquito, has attracted global attention because its bite can transmit several viruses, such as dengue virus. With the absence of an effective therapy and vaccine, mosquito control is the sole method for dengue fever control. However, Ae. albopictus has developed resistance to most insecticides, especially pyrethroids. Many scholars have conducted thorough research for the target-site of pyrethroids. The main target-site is the voltage-gated sodium channel gene (VGSC) whose mutation causes knockdown resistance (kdr). The spatial distribution of three locus kdr mutations in Ae. albopictus has not been comprehensively analyzed nationwide in China. In addition, the relationship between the frequency of kdr mutations and dengue fever has not yet been explored. Methods: A total of 2,241 Ae. albopictus samples from 49 populations from 11 provinces of mainland China were collected in 2020 and analyzed for mutations in the VGSC gene. DNAstar 7.1. Seqman and Mega-X were used to compare the sequences and read the peak map to confirm the genotypes and alleles of each mutation. ArcGIS 10.6 software was used to make interpolation and extract meteorological data of collection sites and to conduct spatial autocorrelation analysis. R 4.1.2 software was used to conduct a chi-square test for kdr mutations and dengue area and to analyze the correlation between meteorological factors and kdr mutations. Results: The overall frequencies of mutant alleles at 1016G, 1532T, and 1534S/C/ L were 13.19%, 4.89%, and 46.90%, respectively. Mutations at the three loci were found at 89.80% (44/49), 44.90% (22/49), and 97.96% (48/49) of the field populations. At each of the loci V1016 and I1532, only one allele was detected, which was GGA(G) and ACC(T), respectively. Five mutant alleles were found at codon 1534: TCC/S (33.49%), TGC/C (11.96%), TTG/L (0.60%), CTC/L (0.49%), and TTA/L (0.58%). In total, 31 triple-locus genotype combinations were found, and the single locus mutation was the most common. We also found firstly triple-locus mutant individuals, whose genotypes were V/G+I/T+F/S and V/G+I/ T+S/S. The 1016 and 1532 mutation rates were significantly negatively related to the annual average temperature (AAT), but the 1534 mutation rate was significantly positively related to AAT. The 1532 mutation rate was significantly positively related to the 1016 mutation rate but negatively related to the 1534 mutation rate. A relationship was observed between the 1534 codon mutation rate and dengue epidemic areas in this study. Furthermore, spatial autocorrelation analysis results showed that the mutation rates of different codons in different geographical areas had spatial aggregation and positive spatial correlation. Conclusion: This study showed that the multiple kdr mutations at codon 1016, 1532 and 1534 of Ae. albopictus were found in most areas of China. Two novel triple-locus genotype combinations, V/G+I/T+F/S and V/G+I/T+S/S, were detected in this study. In addition, the relationship between mosquito resistance and dengue fever outbreak should be further explored, especially considering the insecticide-usage history in different areas. The characteristic of spatial aggregation of VGSC gene mutation rates reminds us to notice the gene exchange and similarity of insecticide usage in the adjacent areas. The use of pyrethroids should be restricted to delay resistance development. New-type insecticides should be developed to adjust the changes in the resistance spectrum. Our study provides abundant data on the Ae. albopictus kdr gene mutation in China; these findings will be useful for the correlation analysis of molecular mechanism of insecticide resistance. Sweet cherries are popular among consumers, with a recent explosion in sweet cherry production in China. However, the fragility of these fruits poses a challenge for expanding production and transport. With the aim of expanding the product categories of sweet cherries that can bypass these challenges, in this study, we prepared sweet cherry juice fermented by three different lactic acid bacteria (LAB; Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG), and evaluated the growth, physiochemical, and aroma characteristics. All three strains exhibited excellent growth potential in the sweet cherry juice; however, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum demonstrated more robust acid production capacity and higher microbial viability than Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Lactic acid was the primary fermentation product, and malic acid was significantly metabolized by LAB, indicating a transition in microbial metabolism from using carbohydrates to organic acids. The aroma profile was identified through integrated analysis of electronic nose (E-nose) and headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) data. A total of 50 volatile compounds characterized the aromatic profiles of the fermented juices by HS-GC-IMS. The flavor of sweet cherry juice changed after LAB fermentation and the fruity odor decreased overall. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum significantly increased 2-heptanone, ethyl acetate, and acetone contents, bringing about a creamy and rummy-like favor, whereas Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG significantly increased 2-heptanone, 3-hydroxybutan-2-one, and 2-pentanone contents, generating cheesy and buttery-like odors. Principal component analysis of GC-IMS data and linear discriminant analysis of E-nose results could effectively differentiate nonfermented sweet cherry juice and the sweet cherry juice separately inoculated with different LAB strains. Furthermore, there was a high correlation between the E-nose and GC-IMS results, providing a theoretical basis to identify different sweet cherry juice formulations and appropriate starter culture selection for fermentation. Background From August to September 2022, Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China, faced its largest COVID-19 outbreak caused by the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5.2 variants. Although the superspreading of COVID-19 played an important role in triggering large-scale outbreaks, little was known about the superspreading potential and heterogeneity in the transmission of Omicron BA.5 variants. Methods In this retrospective observational, contact tracing study, we identified 1139 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases of Omicron BA.5.2 variants, and 51323 test-negative close contacts in Urumqi from 7 August to 7 September 2022. By using detailed contact tracing information and exposure history of linked case-contact pairs, we described stratification in contact and heterogeneity in transmission across different demographic strata, vaccine statuses, and contact settings. We adopted beta-binomial models to characterise the secondary attack rate (SAR) distribution among close contacts and modelled COVID-19 transmission as a branching process with heterogeneity in transmission governed by negative binomial models. Results After the city lockdown, the mean case cluster size decreased from 2.0 (before lockdown) to 1.6, with decreased proportions of contacts in workplace and community settings compared with household settings. We estimated that 14% of the most infectious index cases generated 80% transmission, whereas transmission in the community setting presented the highest heterogeneity, with 5% index cases seeding 80% transmission. Compared with zero, one, and two doses of inactivated vaccine (Sinopharm), index cases with three doses of vaccine had a lower risk of generating secondary cases in terms of the reproduction number. Contacts of female cases, cases with ages 0-17 years, and household settings had relatively higher SAR. Conclusions In the context of intensive control measures, active case detection, and relatively high vaccine coverage, but with an infection-naive population, our findings suggested high heterogeneity in the contact and transmission risks of Omicron BA.5 variants across different demographic strata, vaccine statuses, and contact settings. Given the rapid evolution of SARS-CoV-2, investigating the distribution of transmission not only helped promote public awareness and preparedness among high-risk groups, but also highlighted the importance of continuously monitoring the transmission characteristics of genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2. Escherichia coli ranks as the number one clinical isolate in the past years in China according to The China Antimicrobial Surveillance Network (CHINET), and its multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogenic strains account for over 160 million cases of dysentery and one million deaths per year. Here, our work demonstrates that E. coli is highly sensitive to the synergistic combination of SBC3 [1,3-Dibenzyl-4,5-diphenyl-imidazol-2-ylidene silver (I) acetate] and Ebselen, which shows no synergistic toxicity on mammalian cells. The proposed mechanism for the synergistic antibacterial effect of SBC3 in combination with Ebselen is based on directly inhibiting E. coli thioredoxin reductase and rapidly depleting glutathione, resulting in the increase of reactive oxygen species that cause bacterial cell death. Furthermore, the bactericidal efficacy of SBC3 in combination with Ebselen has been confirmed in mild and acute peritonitis mice. In addition, the five most difficult to treat Gram-negative bacteria (including E. coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) are also highly sensitive to a synergistic combination of SBC3 and Ebselen. Panax ginseng is a valuable medicinal plant which is affected by many diseases during its long cultivation period. Ginseng root rot, caused by Fusarium oxysporum, has become severe in China. This soilborne pathogen comprises many formae speciales based on host specificity. Ten representative isolates from diseased ginseng rot root showed pathogenicity on ginseng. To identify the forma specialis of the F. oxysporum strains, host range tests of three representative isolates were carried out on nine plant species. All three isolates caused severe symptoms only on ginseng, but only slight or no visual symptoms on the other eight hosts, indicating that the strains were host-specific to ginseng. Phylogenetic trees were constructed based on sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-a (EF-1a) gene, two endopolygalacturonase genes (Pg1, Pg5) and two exopolygalacturonase genes (Pgx1 and Pgx4). The ten F. oxysporum isolates from ginseng clustered into a unique group clearly separated from other formae speciales already described. Based on the host range tests and phylogenetic analyses, the isolates of F. oxysporum derived from ginseng have been identified as a new forma specialis, designated Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ginseng. BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic hip fractures have posed a significant burden to society, and more epidemiological data is required. OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiological differences of hip fracture patients in Spain and China. METHOD: This was a retrospective comparative study. Comparisons were made in terms of morbidity, demographic and anthropometric characteristics, length of stay, cost of hospitalization, and mortality by consulting the medical histories of osteoporotic hip fractures in two hospitals. The t test was used for measurement data, and the X2 test was used for count data. The difference is statistically significant when p< 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 757 patients were enrolled in this study, with 426 from Virgen Macarena University Hospital (HUVM) and 331 from Xi'an Daxing Hospital (XDH). The average age was 81.4 ± 9.26 and 76.0 ± 8.08 years; the proportion of women was 74.9% and 68.0%, respectively. The incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures in Seville residents over 50 years old was approximately 239 per 100,000 residents, compared to 158 per 100,000 residents in Xi'an. The timing of surgery in Spanish patients was significantly longer than in Chinese patients, 78.7 ± 48.2 vs. 60.7 ± 43.1 hours, p= 0.000. There were 81 deaths in Spain and 43 deaths in China during the one-year follow-up period (p= 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: In terms of incidence, demographics, surgical methods, and mortality, there are significant differences between hip fracture patients in Seville, Spain and Xi'an, China. Background: The application of traditional Chinese herbal medicine has been officially recommended and strongly promoted in China as an important complement to conventional prevention and treatment for COVID-19. Capturing the practices, knowledge and attitudes of young adult population toward using Chinese herbs for COVID-19 is important for understanding the future of Chinese herbal medicine over the coming decades. Methods: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted from May to June, 2022, among 313 student volunteers in Wuhan University of Science and Technology, a provincial comprehensive university in China. Results: Results showed that only 18% of students had used Chinese herbs to prevent COVID-19. The main information sources were social media, the students' family members, relatives, friends, etc. as well as the healthcare professionals. However, most students only sometimes paid close attention to related reports and news articles in social media. Clear pharmacological and toxicological properties of herbs were considered by 43% students as the most important factor to promote their own application of Chinese herbs to fight COVID-19. The mean knowledge score was 1.64 out of 5. Students' overall attitudes toward application of Chinese herbal medicine to fight COVID-19 were very positive. Conclusion: These data suggests most university young adults had a positive attitude but lack of practices and knowledge towards traditional Chinese herbal medicine for COVID-19 control. Pythium insidiosum is a rare fungus-like pathogen that is known to cause pythiosis in mammals with high morbidity and mortality. Identification of the pathogen is essential for timely treatment and rational use of antibiotics. However, Pythium insidiosum is difficult to detect via conventional microbiological tests. The current gold standard is polymerase chain reaction, which is lacking in most hospitals since human pythiosis is rare in China. In this study, we used metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing and identified Pythium insidiosum in a 56-year-old Chinese male who was hospitalized due to severe edema in the right lower limb with scattered darkening indurations. The patient had a history of cirrhosis and occupational exposure to swamp water. Serological level of immune biomarkers indicated immunodeficiency, and Proteinase 3-Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody was positive. Surgical incision of the lesions revealed radiating and reticular cutaneous ulcers. Microbial infections were suspected but conventional tests failed to discover the etiology. Empirical use of penicillin, vancomycin, and ceftriaxone had no effect. As a result, the peripheral blood and tissue biopsies were sent for metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing, which reported Pythium insidiosum. This finding was corroborated by pathological staining, wholegenome sequencing, and internal transcribed spacer sequencing. Notably, antifungal treatment was ineffective, but the patient responded well to oral trimethoprim--sulfamethoxazole, which may be due to the folp gene found in Pythium insidiosum genome. Rootstocks are commonly utilized owing to their resistance to abiotic and biotic stress in viticulture. This study evaluated the effects of three rootstocks (1103P, SO4, and 5A) on the Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) vine growth, and their berries and wines flavonoids profiles in four consecutive vintages. The results showed that 1103P increased the pruning weight of CS and decreased the anthocyanin concentration in berries and wines, especially in the vintages with more rainy and cloudy days. 5A tended to decrease the pruning weight of CS and increase the anthocyanin concentration in berries and wines. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) showed that the concentrations of total anthocyanins, F3'H-anthocyanins, malvidin-3-O-glucoside (Mv-glu), and malvidin-3-O-acetylglucoside (Mv-acglu) were the key substances affected by the rootstocks in CS berries and were significantly decreased by 1103P. Total anthocyanins, pinotins, Mv-glu, epicatechin, and vitisins were the rootstocksensitive compounds that commonly differed in wines among the three comparison groups in the two vintages. Furthermore, 1103P brought more brightness to the wine and 5A gave the wine more red tones. It is widely thought that oceanic subduction can trigger cratonic keel delamination, but the southwestern Yangtze craton (SYC; southwestern China) lost its lower keel during Cenozoic continental collision. The upper mantle beneath the thinned SYC contains its incompletely delaminated keel, which has high-velocity seismic anomalies. Combining geophysical observations with the geochemistry of Eocene mafic potassic lavas derived from the SYC mantle at different depths, we suggest that the deep (~130 km) delaminated lithosphere was more fertile and dense, with low-forsterite (Fo; molar 100 × Mg/[Mg + Fe] = 91.3) and high-δ18O (5.9‰) olivine, than the shallow (~55 km) intact lithosphere (Fo = 94.2; δ18O = 5.2‰), although both were rehydrated and oxidized. The deep keel underwent strong refertilization and densification owing to the addition of Fe-rich basaltic melts during earlier oceanic subduction. Subduction-driven refertilization and subsequent collision-driven cooling caused cratonic keel delamination due to compositional and thermal densification rather than hydration- or oxidation-induced rheological weakening. Our study provides an example of Cenozoic cratonic keel delamination in a collisional orogen and highlights the key roles of compositional and thermal densification in delamination during subduction and collision. Background: Globally, esophageal cancer ranks as the seventh most common cancer. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of its major histological types. ESCC accounts for the vast majority of cases in China, and the mortality rate is high. Cisplatin, the standard adjuvant chemotherapy drug for ESCC, has a modest response rate due to the development of drug resistance. Hinokiflavone (HF) is a natural biflavonoid compound with anti-melanoma activity. However, its anti-tumor effect on ESCC and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Methods: The ESCC cell lines KYSE150 and TE14 were used. The cell counting kit-8 assay and flow cytometry analysis, along with colony formation, EdU, wound healing, and Transwell migration assays, were performed to assess cell characteristics (viability, migration, invasion, and apoptosis) following treatment with HF. Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), western blotting, and molecular docking were used to investigate the pathways potentially modulated by HF. In vivo antitumor effects of HF were also investigated using a mouse xenograft model. Results: Our findings revealed that HF inhibited ESCC cell proliferation. Hoechst 33342 staining, annexin V-FITC/PI staining, and western blotting confirmed that HF causes caspase-dependent apoptosis. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis and western blotting indicated that the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway played an important role in the process of HF-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, HF effectively impaired the migration and invasion abilities of KYSE150 cells and downregulated the expression of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) MMP2 and MMP9. HF inhibited tumor growth and exhibited minimal toxicity in the organs of the KYSE150 xenograft model. Conclusion: This is the first study to demonstrate the inhibition of ESCC growth and progression by HF. The underlying mechanism is through blocking the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. The estimation of small reservoir capacity is of great significance for water resources management. However, many widely distributed small reservoirs lack the capacity information because of the high costs of field measurements. This study proposed a novel approach to estimate the small reservoir capacity in the hilly area by using remote sensing and Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The basic idea of this approach is to explore the relationship between influential factors (i.e., topographic and geomorphic parameters) and measured reservoirs' capacity to establish a machine learning model based on particle swarm optimization-extreme learning machine (PSO-ELM) to estimate the capacity. The Mihe River basin in northern China is selected as a case study, 111 measured reservoirs, and six optional influential factors are selected to develop and test this model. The results show that the five influential factors (i.e., the area of sub-catchment, the water surface area, the longest flow path of sub-catchment, the average slope of sub-catchment, and the average slope of buffer area) are the optimal combination with the lowest difference between the measured and the estimated reservoir capacities. Background: Parenting style and resilience are independently associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, no study has tested the interaction effects between the patterns of parenting style and resilience on mental health in adolescent populations. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the interaction effects between the patterns of parenting style and resilience on depression/anxiety symptoms among middle school students in China. Methods: A sample of 2,179 Chinese middle school students were included in this study. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to examine parenting style patterns. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the associations of different parenting patterns and resilience with depression/anxiety symptoms, as well as the interaction effect. Results: Latent profile analysis results showed that the most suitable model included three-profile solution, which were labeled as positive parenting, negative parenting, and moderate parenting. Subsequent analyses indicated that students across profiles exhibited significant differences in their depression/anxiety symptoms. Specifically, compared to moderate parenting, negative parenting was positively associated with depression/anxiety symptoms, while positive parenting was negatively associated with these symptoms. Moreover, low levels of resilience were positively associated with depression/anxiety symptoms compared to a high level of resilience. Although the interaction effect was not significant, there were differences in the associations between different parenting patterns and symptoms of depression and anxiety when stratifying resilience. Conclusion: The present study identified three-profile solution of parenting styles among Chinese middle school students using LPA as a person-centered approach. Future interventions targeting depression/anxiety symptoms in adolescents may consider the potential influence of patterns of parenting styles, or improved resilience, to achieve better intervention outcomes. BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) may increase the risk of future intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. However, It is unclear whether antiplatelet medication is associated with CMBs. This study aimed to investigate the association between antiplatelet medication and CMBs in a community-based stroke-free population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, stroke-free participants aged 18-85 years were recruited from a community in Beijing, China. Demographic, clinical, and antiplatelet medication data were collected through a questionnaire, and all participants underwent blood tests and brain magnetic resonance imaging at 3.0T. The presence, count, and location of CMBs were evaluated using susceptibility-weighted imaging. The association between antiplatelet medication and the presence of CMBs was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. The associations between antiplatelet medication and CMBs by location (lobar, deep brain or infratentorial, and mixed regions) were also analyzed using multinomial logistic regression. A linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the association between antiplatelet medication and the log-transformed number of CMBs. RESULTS: Of the 544 participants (mean age: 58.65 ± 13.66 years, 217 males), 119 participants (21.88%) had CMBs, and 64 participants (11.76%) used antiplatelet medication. Antiplatelet medication was found to be associated with CMBs at any location [odds ratio (OR) = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.24-4.58] and lobar region (OR = 2.83, 95% CI: 1.36-5.86), but not with the number of CMBs (β = 0.14, 95% CI: -0.21-0.48). Among antiplatelet medications, aspirin use was found to be associated with any CMB (OR = 3.17, 95% CI: 1.49-6.72) and lobar CMBs (OR = 3.61, 95% CI: 1.57-8.26). CONCLUSIONS: Antiplatelet medication was associated with CMBs in stroke-free participants, particularly lobar CMBs. Among antiplatelet medications, aspirin use was associated with any CMB and lobar CMBs. Our findings suggest that it might be essential to optimize the management of antiplatelet medication in the stroke-free population with a higher burden of vascular risk factors to reduce the potential risk of CMBs. Post-processing methods can be used to reduce the biases of hydrological models. In this research, six post-processing methods are compared: quantile mapping (QM) methods, which include four kinds of transformations, and two newly established machine learning frameworks [support vector regression (SVR) and convolutional neural network (CNN)] based on meteorological data and variation mode decomposition (VMD)-decomposed streamflow. These post-processing methods are applied to a distributed model (WRF-Hydro), and the evaluation is carried out over five watersheds with different areas in South China. The post-processing methods are separately applied to calibrated and uncalibrated models. The results show that the SVR- and CNN-based post-processing methods perform better than the QM methods in terms of daily streamflow simulations in different areas with different topographies in the Xijiang River basin. There are large uncertainties in the QM post-processing methods. The CNN-based post-processing performs slightly better than the SVR-based post-processing, but both methods can markedly improve the simulated streamflow. The CNN- and SVR-based post-processing frameworks are suitable for both calibration and test periods. The differences between post-processing with uncalibrated and calibrated models are quite small for SVR- and CNN-based post-processing, but large for QM post-processing. This article summarizes the background, specific conditions, main measures, steps and effects of the implementation of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) to control the local P. vivax malaria epidemic in Anhui Province in central China. Distributing medicines to the designated population quickly controlled the local epidemic of P. vivax. Implementing MDA to control P. vivax ensured the correct selection of medicines, clarification of the targeted population for receipt of medicines, and assurance of a high rate of compliance through government support and health education. Rhododendron henanense subsp. lingbaoense (hereafter referred to as R. henanense) is an endemic species naturally distributed in the Henan province, China, with high horticultural, ornamental and medicinal value. Herein, we report a de novo genome assembly for R. henanense using a combination of PacBio long read and Illumina short read sequencing technologies. In total, we assembled 634.07 Mb with a contig N50 of 2.5 Mb, representing ~96.93% of the estimated genome size. By applying Hi‐C data, 13 pseudochromosomes of R. henanense genome were assembled, covering ~98.21% of the genome assembly. The genome was composed of ~65.76% repetitive sequences and 31,098 protein‐coding genes, 88.77% of which could be functionally annotated. Rhododendron henanense displayed a high level of synteny with other Rhododendron species from the Hymenanthes subgenus. Our data also suggests that R. henanense genes related to stress responses have undergone expansion, which may underly the unique abiotic and biotic stress resistance of the species. This alpine Rhododendron chromosome‐scale genome assembly provides fundamental molecular resources for germplasm conservation, breeding efforts, evolutionary studies, and elucidating the unique biological characteristics of R. henanense. The conceptual hydrologic model has been widely used for flood forecasting, while long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network has been demonstrated a powerful ability to tackle time-series predictions. This study proposed a novel hybrid model by combining the Xinanjiang (XAJ) conceptual model and LSTM model (XAJ-LSTM) to achieve precise multi-step-ahead flood forecasts. The hybrid model takes flood forecasts of the XAJ model as the input variables of the LSTM model to enhance the physical mechanism of hydrological modeling. Using the XAJ and the LSTM models as benchmark models for comparison purposes, the hybrid model was applied to the Lushui reservoir catchment in China. The results demonstrated that three models could offer reasonable multi-step-ahead flood forecasts and the XAJ-LSTM model not only could effectively simulate the long-term dependence between precipitation and flood datasets, but also could create more accurate forecasts than the XAJ and the LSTM models. The hybrid model maintained similar forecast performance after feeding with simulated flood values of the XAJ model during horizons t þ Dt to t þ 4Dt. The study concludes that the XAJ-LSTM model that integrates the conceptual model and machine learning can raise the accuracy of multi-step-ahead flood forecasts while improving the interpretability of data-driven model internals. Fishing closures, commonly used to manage fisheries' catch, involve temporarily closing a body of water to particular fishing gears to control fishing effort and protect feeding and spawning areas. In recent years in Qiantang River of China, with the socio-economic development, protection of fish stock has become increasingly urgent. The year 2019 was the first year that Qiantang River was included in the unified fishing ban system for the south of Yangtze River basin. Here, fish captures and hydroacoustic surveys were carried out in the research area of Qiantang River in order to present comparative descriptions of the dominant fish species, the temporal changes of fish size, density, biomass, and distribution affected by the four-month fishing closure in 2019. The results showed that Pseudobrama simoni (Bleeker, 1864) was the most dominant species both before and after the closure by using the traditional capture method. The mean target strength (TS) of overall fish after closure was --50.28 ± 0.19 dB, which was lower than that before, resulting in a significantly shorter derived mean length (13.42 ± 0.74 cm). The mean fish density and calculated biomass after closure were both significantly higher than that before it. More than 50% of fish species were distributed in the water of 5--20 m depth after the closure, which likely occurred in water deeper than 20 m before. Meanwhile, fewer outliers were found in different depth categories after closure. It is concluded that the four-month closure in 2019 had a positive effect on fish size, density, and biomass, leading to protection of pelagic fishes and a more even distribution of fish. The COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in a serious public health burden. As the COVID-19 epidemic in China would coincide with a seasonal outbreak of influenza, there were serious concerns about whether influenza would be aggravated by the SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 pandemic. This article provides a brief overview of the impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic on influenza activity in China. The percentage of positive influenza tests decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the first stage of the COVID-19 outbreak, the percentage of positive influenza tests reached to a peak of 47.7%. At the second stage, the percentage of positive influenza tests was dramatically decreased from 40.4% to 14.0%. Thereafter, it remains at a low level of less than 6.2%. In addition, the possible causes of this phenomenon have been summarized, including prevention and control measures and ecological competition. Lastly, this article suggests that the public health approach to preventing COVID-19 may also help to control other respiratory infectious diseases. The positive development of migrant children in China is hampered due to their unequal accessibility to quality urban education resources. This research aimed at exploring the developmental trajectories of migrant and urban children's literacy and mathematics performance, as well as the impact of family socioeconomic status (SES) and parenting styles, including the mediating effect of parenting styles, by comparing migrant children with their urban counterparts. Growth mixture modeling identified distinguishable trajectories of mathematics development for migrant children (i.e., "falling behind" and "keeping pace" groups) and urban children (i.e., "catching up" and "keeping pace" groups), as well as distinguishable trajectories of literacy development for migrant children (i.e., "jumpstarting" and "keeping pace" groups) and urban children ("falling behind" and "steadily progressing" groups). Multinomial logistic regression analyses further clarified that authoritative parenting increased the likelihood of favorable trajectories of migrant children's mathematics development and urban children's literacy and mathematics development. Family SES enhanced migrant children's mathematics development. Family SES contributed to urban children's literacy development through authoritative parenting, yet such a mediating effect was not observed for migrant children. The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on board the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission core satellite provides the new-generation global observation of rain since 2014. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the suitability and limitation of GPM-DPR level-2 products over China. The DPR rain rate products are compared with rain gauge data during the summers of 5 years (2014-18). The ground observation network is composed of more than 50 000 rain gauges. The DPR precipitation products for all scans (DPR_NS, DPR_MS, and DPR_HS) generally underestimate rain rates. However, DPR_MS agrees better with gauge estimates thanDPR_NS and DPR_HS, yielding the lowest mean error, systematic deviation, and highest Pearson correlation coefficient. In addition, all three swath types show obvious overestimation over gauge estimates between 0.5 and 1mmh-1 and underestimation when gauge estimates are larger than 1mmh-1. The DPR_HS and DPR_MS agree better with gauge estimates below and above 2.5mmh-1, respectively. A deeper investigation was carried out to analyze the variation of DPR_MS's performance with respect to terrains over China. An obvious underestimation, relative to gauge estimates, occurs in Tibetan Plateau while a slight overestimation occurs in the North China Plain. Furthermore, our comprehensive analysis suggests that in Sichuan Basin, the DPR_MS exhibit the best agreement with gauge estimates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Potential modification of the association between maternal particulate matter (PM) exposure and preterm delivery (PTD) by folic acid (FA) supplementation has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether FA supplementation could reduce the risk of PTD associated with maternal exposure to PM in ambient air during pregnancy. METHOD: In a cohort study covering 30 of the 31 provinces of mainland China in 2014, 1,229,556 primiparas of Han ethnicity were followed until labor. We collected information on their FA supplementation and pregnancy outcomes and estimated each participant's exposure to PM with diameters of =10µm (PM10), 2.5µm (PM2.5), and 1µm (PM1) using satellite remote-sensing based models. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine interactions between FA supplementation and PM exposures, after controlling for individual characteristics. RESULTS: Participants who initiated FA =3?months prior to pregnancy (38.1%) had a 23% [hazard ratio (HR)=0.77 (95% CI: 0.76, 0.78)] lower risk of PTD than women who did not use preconception FA. Participants with PM concentrations in the highest quartile had a higher risk of PTD [HR=1.29 (95% CI: 1.26, 1.32) for PM1, 1.52 (95% CI: 1.46, 1.58) for PM2.5, and 1.22 (95% CI: 1.17, 1.27) for PM10] than those with exposures in the lowest PM quartiles. Estimated associations with a 10-µg/m³ increase in PM1 and PM2.5 were significantly lower among women who initiated FA =3?months prior to pregnancy [HR=1.09 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.10) for both exposures] than among women who did not use preconception FA [HR=1.12 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.13) for both exposures; ?interaction<0.001]. The corresponding association was also significantly lower for a 10-µg/m³ increase in PM10 [HR=1.03 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.03) for FA =3?months before pregnancy vs. 1.04 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.04) for no preconception FA; ?interaction<0.001]. CONCLUSION: Our findings require confirmation in other populations, but they suggest that initiating FA supplementation =3?months prior to pregnancy may lessen the risk of PTD associated with PM exposure during pregnancy among primiparas of Han ethnicity. Background and objective Anatomical segmentectomy is more and more widely used in lung nodules and early stage lung cancer. Postoperative lung air leakage is one of the common complications after surgery. This study aimed to explore the effect of the application of repair materials in precise segmentectomy under thoracoscopy in reducing postoperative lung air leakage. Methods This study included patients admitted to the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital who were scheduled to undergo thoracoscopic segmentectomy from August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019. According to the difference of the materials used in the treatment of the inter-segment interface during the operation: patients who used microporous polysaccharide hemostatic powder+fibrin adhesive glue+absorbable polyglycolic acid patch were divided into group A, and the patients with fibrin adhesive+absorbable polyglycolic acid patch were divided into group B. The preoperative basic information of all patients and the daily postoperative chest drainage volume, the indwelling time of the chest drainage tube, the chest radiograph before the chest drainage tube is removed, the chest radiograph after the chest drainage tube is removed, blood routine and postoperative hospital stay were collected and recorded, and the effect of the application of intraoperative repair materials on postoperative lung air leakage was analyzed. Results There were statistically significant differences in the indwelling time of thoracic drainage tube (P=0.019) and postoperative hospital stay (P=0.017) between the two groups. In this study, the effects of temperature, pH, and biochar under cadmium stress on the adsorption characteristics of atrazine in soils in northeast China were studied by batch adsorption method. In the atrazine–Cd(II) coexistence system, the adsorption of atrazine by the soils reached equilibrium within 24 h, but there were some differences in sorption capacities of the three types of soil and the order of adsorption is albic soil > black soil > saline-alkaline soil. With the concentration of atrazine increased, the adsorption capacity of atrazine in the three types of soil gradually increased, the upward trend became more obvious with the ambient temperature of the solution decreased. The adsorption kinetics curves of atrazine in the three types of soil conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir model. When atrazine and Cd(II) coexist in soils, the decrease in atrazine adsorption in the soil may be due to the competitive interaction between the two chemicals. Cd(II) occupies part of the adsorption site of atrazine, thus saturating the active site in soils. Since atrazine is a weakly alkaline pesticide, the lower the pH of the soil, the higher the affinity of atrazine for the soil. After adding biochar to the soil, the functional groups in biochar can form π bond with atrazine, which promotes the fixation of atrazine in the soil. The results show that the prevention of atrazine and cadmium leaching can be achieved by appropriately adjusting the pH, temperature, clay content, and organic matter of the soils. The morphology and ontogeny of the trilobite Changaspis elongata based on 216 specimens collected from the Lazizhai section of the Balang Formation (Stage 4, Series 2 of the Cambrian) in Guizhou Province, South China are described. The relatively continuous ontogenetic series reveals morphological changes, and shows that the species has seventeen thoracic segments in the holaspid period, instead of the sixteen as previously suggested. The development of the pygidial segments shows that their number gradually decreases during ontogeny. A new dataset of well-preserved specimens offers a unique opportunity to investigate developmental traits after segment addition is completed. The ontogenetic size progressions for the lengths of cephalon and trunk show overall compliance with Dyar's rule. As a result of different average growth rates for the lengths of cephalon, trunk and pygidium, the length of the thorax relative to the body shows a gradually increasing trend; however, the cephalon and pygidium follow the opposite trend. Morphometric analysis across fourteen post-embryonic stages reveals growth gradients with increasing values for each thoracic segment from anterior to posterior. The reconstruction of the development traits shows visualization of the changes in relative growth and segmentation for the different body parts. The new dataset and growth gradient of the trunk suggest that the thoracic segment growth dynamics of early Cambrian to Silurian trilobites follow the same general continuous, steady-state growth gradient decreasing from posterior to anterior. The genus Notomastus is frequently encountered in Chinese waters. However, its species richness is poorly understood. In this study, a Notomastus species obtained from Xiamen Bay, southern China, was described and illustrated as a new species (N. sunae sp. nov.), based on morphological and molecular analyses. The new species is characterized by having uniramous chaetiger 1, the presence of palpode and eyespots on prostomium, chaetiger 11 with notopodial capillaries and neuropodial hooded hooks, and notopodial lobes with simple epithelial extensions on far posterior abdomen. With additional specimens collected from several localities along the southern coasts of China, the morphology and geographical distribution of the new species are discussed. A new species of Isotrema was recently discovered from Guizhou, China and is here named as I. brevilimbum. It is most similar to I. ovatifolium and I. wardianum, but differs in the morphology of leaves and flowers. Storm surges, which may cause considerable casualties and economic losses, are among the most serious natural disasters that threaten the coastal areas of China. Storm surge disaster risk assessment can reflect the expected losses and severity of future storm surge impacts in coastal areas and thus provides important decision support for disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, the Jinshan District in Shanghai was chosen as a case study area for establishing a high-precision storm surge numerical model. Based on typical historical storm surge disaster processes, key parameters were set up for a typhoon-induced probable maximum storm surge in Jinshan District. The inundation range and water depth distribution of such a typhoon-induced storm surge in Jinshan District were calculated, and the hazard level was classified. Based on land-use types and the distribution of important coastal disaster exposure, the vulnerability level of Jinshan District to storm surge disasters was evaluated. In light of the hazard and vulnerability levels to storm surge disasters, we assessed the risk-level distribution of such disasters in Jinshan District. The results show that the overall risk of storm surge disasters was high in this district. Most coastal areas of Shihua sub-district and Shanyang Town and some areas of Fengjing, Zhujing, and Tinglin Towns in Jinshan District were Level I storm disaster risk areas. [Objectives] Polysaccharides in common fruits were determined and compared. [Methods] Polysaccharides in fresh bananas, apples, grapes and strawberries purchased from local markets were extracted using water extraction-alcohol precipitation method and determined using 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid（DNS） method. [Results] The content of polysaccharides in banana was relatively high. The optimal conditions for DNS colorimetry were as follows: measurement wavelength of 510 nm, color developer of 1.0 mL, color development temperature of 90 ℃, color development time of 5 min and stabilization time within 30 min. [Conclusions] The reproducibility and recovery rate of this method are ideal. It shows that the method is highly precise and is helpful for the research of fruit polysaccharides. Precipitation is projected to change intensity and seasonal regime under current global projections. However, little is known about how seasonal precipitation changes will affect soil respiration, especially in seasonally dry tropical forests. In a seasonally dry tropical forest in South China, we conducted a precipitation manipulation experiment to simulate a delayed wet season (DW) and a wetter wet season (WW) over a three‐year period. In DW, we reduced 60% throughfall in April and May to delay the onset of the wet season and irrigated the same amount water into the plots in October and November to extend the end of the wet season. In WW, we irrigated 25% annual precipitation into plots in July and August. A control treatment (CT) receiving ambient precipitation was also established. Compared with CT, DW significantly increased soil moisture by 54% during October to November, and by 30% during December to April. The treatment of WW did not significantly affect monthly measured soil moisture. In 2015, DW significantly increased leaf area index and soil microbial biomass but decreased fine root biomass. In contrast, WW significantly decreased fine root biomass and forest floor litter stocks. Soil respiration was not affected by DW, which could be attributed to the increased microbial biomass offsetting the decrease in fine root biomass. In contrast, WW significantly increased soil respiration from 3.40 to 3.90 μmol m−2 s−1 in the third year, mainly due to the increased litter decomposition and soil pH (from 4.48 to 4.68). The present study suggests that both a delayed wet season and a wetter wet season will have significant impacts on soil respiration‐associated ecosystem components. Objective. The human lipidomic profile reflects lipid metabolism, including the early phase of pathophysiological changes associated with diseases. An investigation of the association between the plasma lipidomic profile and adolescent obesity might provide new insights into the biological mechanisms of obesity. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association of the plasma lipidome with obesity in Chinese adolescents using lipidomics. Methods. Using a combination of liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, we quantified 328 lipid species from 24 lipid classes and subclasses in 100 male adolescents aged 14-16 years who were categorized into four groups: (1) normal weight with traditional normal clinical plasma lipid levels (NN); (2) normal weight with traditional abnormal clinical plasma lipid levels (NA); (3) obese with traditional normal clinical plasma lipid levels (ON); and (4) obese with traditional abnormal clinical plasma lipid levels (OA). The concentrations of all the lipid species were compared between obese and normal-weight adolescents at different traditional clinical plasma lipid levels using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney U test. A partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to select lipids with a significant abilityto discriminate adolescent obesity. Results. The lipidomic profile distinguished obese adolescents from normal-weight subjects. Regardless of whether traditional clinical plasma lipid levels were normal or abnormal, we observed a significant reduction in the levels of five lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC) species (LPC18:2, LPC18:1, LPC20:2, LPC20:1, and LPC20:0) in the obese group compared with the normal-weight group (difference = -31.29% to -13.19%; P = 9.91 x 10 -5 to 2.28 x 10-2). The ability of these five LPC species to discriminate adolescent obesity was confirmed in the PLS- DA model. Conclusions. The findings provided evidence for the association of some LPC species with adolescent obesity. The discriminatory effects of five LPC species were identified between normal-weight and obese adolescents, independent of traditional clinical plasma lipid levels. Chemistry plays an indispensable role in investigations of the atmosphere, however, many climate models either ignore or greatly simplify atmospheric chemistry, limiting both their accuracy and their scope. We present the development and evaluation of the online global atmospheric chemical model BCC-GEOS-Chem v1.0, coupling the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model (CTM) as an atmospheric chemistry component in the Beijing Climate Center atmospheric general circulation model (BCC-AGCM). The GEOS-Chem atmospheric chemistry component includes detailed tropospheric HOx-NOx-VOC-ozone-bromine-aerosol chemistry and online dry and wet deposition schemes. We then demonstrate the new capabilities of BCC-GEOS-Chem v1.0 relative to the base BCC-AGCM model through a three-year (2012-2014) simulation with anthropogenic emissions from the Community Emissions Data System (CEDS) used in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The model well captures the spatial distributions and seasonal variations in tropospheric ozone, with seasonal mean biases of 0.4-2.2 ppbv at 700-400 hPa compared to satellite observations and within 10 ppbv at the surface-500 hPa compared to global ozonesonde observations. The model has larger high ozone biases over the tropics which we attribute to an overestimate of ozone chemical production. It underestimates ozone in the upper troposphere which likely due to either the use of a simplified stratospheric ozone scheme and/or to biases in estimated stratosphere-troposphere exchange dynamics. The model diagnoses the global tropospheric ozone burden, OH concentration, and methane chemical lifetime to be 336 Tg, 1.16 x 106 molecule cm-3, and 8.3 years, respectively, consistent with recent multi-model assessments. The spatiotemporal distributions of NO2, CO, SO2, CH2O, and aerosols optical depth are generally in agreement with satellite observations.
