The objectives of this study were to determine the perceptions and accessibility of online help for problem gambling among Chinese youths. A group of undergraduates participated in a survey cum laboratory exercise to search for help for problem gambling in Macao, Hong Kong, and China. Online search engines were used. During the search process, participants found they had to sieve through a long list of search results, many of which were links to articles rather than help organizations. The key findings of this study were: (1) online help was a popular resource but it was not perceived as the most effective form of help, (2) there were no sponsored links in the search results and it took some effort to locate the relevant help organizations, and (3) certain website features and online tools were useful to attract potential users to online help. This paper discussed the implications of the findings.

With the rapid development of network technology and smart technology, smart aged-care products are becoming increasingly valued for their ability to help the aged actively cope with the challenges of aging. However, seniors face challenges in using smart aged-care products for many reasons, which reduces their willingness to adopt them. As a result, the sustainable development of smart aged-care products is constrained. This study combined the unified theory of technology acceptance and use, perceived risk theory and perceived cost theory, and reconstructed a research model that investigated the adoption of smart aged-care products by the elderly in China. Questionnaires were given to older Chinese adults in this study, and 386 valuable responses were received. The findings of the structural equation model (SEM) analysis are as follows: (1) performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence were positively related to the behavioral intention of seniors to use smart aged-care products; (2) perceived cost and perceived risk were negatively related to the behavioral intention of seniors to use smart aged-care products; (3) perceived risk indirectly affected use behavior through behavioral intentions; (4) facilitating conditions did not have a significant impact on the use behavior of seniors in adopting smart aged-care products. Based on the empirical results, this study sought to improve the use behavior of the aged in relation to the adoption of smart aged-care products, and provided suggestions to improve the overall service quality and sustainability of those products. Mobile healthcare applications are of significant potential value in the development of the aged-care industry due to their great convenience, high efficiency, and low cost. Since the cognition and utilization rates of mobile healthcare applications for the elderly are still low, this study explored the factors that affect the elderly's adoption of mobile healthcare applications. This study conducted a questionnaire survey on the elderly in China and received 365 valuable responses. This study combined the technology acceptance model, protection motivation theory, and perceived risk theory to build a research model of factors affecting the use of mobile healthcare applications by the elderly. The data were analyzed using a structural equation model. The results were as follows: according to the empirical research, (1) perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use positively affect the use attitude of the elderly; perceived usefulness and user attitude positively affect the behavior intention of the elderly; perceived ease of use positively affects perceived usefulness; (2) perceived severity has a significant positive correlation with use attitude; perceived susceptibility and attitude to use have no significant impact; (3) perceived risk is negatively correlated with the use attitude and behavioral intention. The above-mentioned factors should be taken into consideration during the development of mobile healthcare applications for the aged to upgrade the overall service quality of mobile healthcare applications, thus enhancing the operational level of mobile healthcare applications and the health literacy of the aged. The occurrence and distribution of six phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in surface water and sediment of the Pearl River were investigated, including Xijiang River (XR), Beijiang River (BR), Lingdingyang Estuary (LE), and Guangzhou River (GR) in South China. Six target PAEs were identified in surface water and sediment at almost all sites in the Pearl River, with di(2-ethyl-ethyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as dominant PAEs. Total 6 PAEs (ΣPAEs) in surface water and sediment ranged from 1,797.5 to 4,968.5 ng L−1 and 95.24 to 3,677.26 ng g−1 dw, respectively. In addition, the contamination levels of PAEs in the Pearl River are in the following order: XR > BR > GR > LE for surface water and BR > XR > GR for sediment. Local agricultural activities, industrial production, water confluence, and seawater intrusion are the probable sources of PAEs in the Pearl River. Based on correlation analysis, the possible collocation patterns of different PAEs were revealed. The risk assessment indicates that residual PAEs in the Pearl River pose a serious threat to the ecological environment. Aim: This study assessed the efficacy and safety of upadacitinib (UPA), in combination with conventional synthetic disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs), in Chinese, Brazilian, and South Korean patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and an inadequate response (IR) to csDMARDs. Methods: Patients on stable csDMARDs were randomized (1:1) to once‐daily UPA 15 mg or matching placebo (PBO) for a 12‐week, double‐blind period. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving ≥20% improvement in American College of Rheumatology criteria (ACR20) at week 12. Results: In total, 338 patients were randomized and treated, of whom 310 (91.7%) completed the double‐blind phase. The study met the primary endpoint of ACR20 at week 12 for UPA 15 mg vs PBO (71.6% vs 31.4%, P <.001), with a treatment difference observed as early as week 1. All ranked and other key secondary endpoints, including more stringent responses such as ACR50, ACR70 (≥50%/70% improvement in ACR criteria), and Disease Activity Score in 28 joints using C‐reactive protein <2.6, were met for UPA 15 mg vs PBO. The incidence of serious infections (2.4% vs 0.6%) and herpes zoster (HZ: 1.8% vs 0.6%) was higher with UPA 15 mg vs PBO. There was one case of venous thromboembolism reported in the UPA group. Conclusion: UPA 15 mg in combination with csDMARDs demonstrated clinical and functional improvement and an acceptable safety profile over 12 weeks among patients from China, Brazil, and South Korea who had moderately to severely active RA and an IR to csDMARDs. China is experiencing a rapid expansion of what is termed 'collective bargaining'. The article draws on workplace and sectoral examples to assess what underlies this. Recent changes in labour policy are outlined. Four studies at establishment level describe the use of hybrid representation in response to growing worker activism and internal union reform. Two studies of sectoral bargaining shed light on decentralized decision-making on pay. Attention is drawn to the growth of employer organizations and increased articulation within the trade union. Ontology is playing an increasingly important role in knowledge management and the Semantic Web. This study presents a novel episode-based ontology construction mechanism to extract domain ontology from unstructured text documents. Additionally, fuzzy numbers for conceptual similarity computing are presented for concept clustering and taxonomic relation definitions. Moreover, concept attributes and operations can be extracted from episodes to construct a domain ontology, while non-taxonomic relations can be generated from episodes. The fuzzy inference mechanism is also applied to obtain new instances for ontology learning. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively construct a Chinese domain ontology from unstructured text documents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study investigated the large-scale distributions of persistent toxic substances (PTSs) and heavy metals in sediments of the Yellow Sea, collected from six transects between latitudes 32 and 37 degrees north (n = 35). Elevated concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected near the mainland, with a predominance of low-chlorinated congeners (di to tetra, ∼60%), indicative of atmospheric deposition. Analysis of traditional and emerging polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (t-PAHs and e-PAHs) revealed notable enrichment in the Central Yellow Sea Mud Zone (CYSM), attributing fossil fuel combustion as the significant source. Styrene oligomers and alkylphenols exhibited notable accumulation near the Han River Estuary in South Korea and the Yangtze River Estuary in China, respectively. The accumulation of heavy metals was predominantly observed in the CYSM, with element-specific distribution patterns. Cluster analysis revealed distinct distribution patterns for PTSs and metals, highlighting their source-dependent and grain size-dependent behaviors. In addition, the distribution and accumulation of PTSs tended to depend on their partitioning coefficients, such as the octanol-air partition coefficient (log K OA ) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log K OW ). Algal blooms contribute to water quality degradation, unpleasant odors, taste issues, and the presence of harmful substances in artificially constructed weirs. Mitigating these adverse effects through effective algal bloom management requires identifying the contributing factors and predicting algal concentrations. This study focused on the upstream region of the Seungchon Weir in Korea, which is characterized by elevated levels of total nitrogen and phosphorus due to a significant influx of water from a sewage treatment plant. We employed four distinct machine learning models to predict chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations and identified the influential variables linked to local algal bloom events. The gradient boosting model enabled an in-depth exploration of the intricate relationships between algal occurrence and water quality parameters, enabling accurate identification of the causal factors. The models identified the discharge flow rate (D-Flow) and water temperature as the primary determinants of Chl-a levels, with feature importance values of 0.236 and 0.212, respectively. Enhanced model precision was achieved by utilizing daily average D-Flow values, with model accuracy and significance of the D-Flow amplifying as the temporal span of daily averaging increased. Elevated Chl-a concentrations correlated with diminished D-Flow and temperature, highlighting the pivotal role of D-Flow in regulating Chl-a concentration. This trend can be attributed to the constrained discharge of the Seungchon Weir during winter. Calculating the requisite D-Flow to maintain a desirable Chl-a concentration of up to 20 mg/m 3 across varying temperatures revealed an escalating demand for D-Flow with rising temperatures. Specific D-Flow ranges, corresponding to each season and temperature condition, were identified as particularly influential on Chl-a concentration. Thus, optimizing Chl-a reduction can be achieved by strategically increasing D-Flow within these specified ranges for each season and temperature variation. China and South Korea are the most polluted countries in East Asia due to significant urbanization and extensive industrial activities. As neighboring countries, collaborative management plans to maximize public health in both countries can be helpful in reducing transboundary air pollution. To support such planning, PM 2.5 inorganic and organic species were determined in simultaneously collected PM 2.5 integrated filters. The resulting data were used as inputs to positive matrix factorization, which identified nine sources at the ambient air monitoring sites in both sites. Secondary nitrate, secondary sulfate/oil combustion, soil, mobile, incinerator, biomass burning, and secondary organic carbon (SOC) were found to be sources at both sampling sites. Industry I and II were only identified in Seoul, whereas combustion and road dust sources were only identified in Beijing. A subset of samples was selected for exposure assessment. The expression levels of IL-8 were significantly higher in Beijing (167.7 pg/mL) than in Seoul (72.7 pg/mL). The associations between the PM 2.5 chemical constituents and its contributing sources with PM 2.5 -induced inflammatory cytokine (interleukin-8, IL-8) levels in human bronchial epithelial cells were investigated. For Seoul, the soil followed by the secondary nitrate and the biomass burning showed increase with IL-8 production. However, for the Beijing, the secondary nitrate exhibited the highest association with IL-8 production and SOC and biomass burning showed modest increase with IL-8. As one of the highest contributing sources in both cities, secondary nitrate showed an association with IL-8 production. The soil source having the strongest association with IL-8 production was found only for Seoul, whereas SOC showed a modest association only for Beijing. The aim of this research is to investigate which CALL glossing modes (text only, text plus audio, and text plus video clips) are effective for learners' idiom acquisition. Ninety-nine intermediate-level first-year students from a university in China were divided into three groups. In order to determine if CALL glossing had any effect on students' idiom learning, pre- and post-idiom tests were administered. In addition, all the participants completed a questionnaire and five participants from each group completed face-to-face interviews to understand learners' perceptions of different CALL glosses. The results indicated that all three glossing modes promoted idiom acquisition; specifically, text with video glossing mode was more effective than text plus audio glosses and text only glossing mode. Organochlorine pesticides in soil samples across urban, suburban, agricultural, and industrial sites were analyzed every year between 2013 and 2016 in South Korea. The study aims to understand the residual status, diminution of occurrence from the South Korean environment, and its risk to humans after three decades of the ban. A general decreasing trend of OCPs has been observed over the years. The OCP concentrations were below the guideline values prescribed for soil pollution. Metabolites like p,p'-DDD and endosulfan sulfate contributed a major portion to the total OCP concentration over the years. The agricultural sites showed higher OCP levels than other site types. Compositional profile and diagnostic ratios suggested that the occurrence of DDT and endosulfan residues were due to historical inputs, but those of HCH and chlordane reflect recent usage in some pockets. The calculated incremental lifetime cancer risk was within the safety limit for all age groups across the genders in the majority of the sites. It is evident that the OCP load on soil is decreasing since the ban on usage. Correct identification of the origins of herbal medical products is becoming increasingly important in tandem with the growing interest in alternative medicine. However, visual inspection of raw material is still the most widely used method, and newer scientific approaches are needed. To develop a more objective and efficient tool for discriminating herbal origins, particularly Korean and Chinese, we employed a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics approach combined with an orthogonal projections to latent structure-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) multivariate analysis. We first analyzed the constituent metabolites of Scutellaria baicalensis through NMR studies. Subsequent holistic data analysis with OPLS-DA yielded a statistical model that could cleanly discriminate between the sample groups even in the presence of large structured noise. An analysis of the statistical total correlation spectroscopy (STOCSY) spectrum identified citric acid and arginine as the key discriminating metabolites for Korean and Chinese samples. As a validation of the discrimination model, we performed blind prediction tests of sample origins using an external test set. Our model correctly predicted the origins of all of the 11 test samples, demonstrating its robustness. We tested the wider applicability of the developed method with three additional herbal medicines from Korea and China and obtained very high prediction accuracy. The solid discriminatory power and statistical validity of our method suggest its general applicability for determining the origins of herbal medicines.

This work investigated water samples collected from Tapeng Lagoon and three neighbouring rivers (the Kaoping River, Tungkang River and Lingbeng River) in Taiwan, Republic of China. Canonical discriminant analysis was applied to identify the source of pollution in neighbouring rivers outside Tapeng Lagoon. The two constructed discriminant functions showed a marked contribution to all discriminant variables, and the total nitrogen, algae, dissolved oxygen and total phosphate were combined as the nutrient effect factor. The recognition capacities of the two discriminant functions were 95.6% and 4.4%, respectively. The water quality in the Kaoping River most strongly controlled the water quality in Tapeng Lagoon. Disassembling the oyster frames and fishery boxes had improved the water quality markedly. The methodology and results provide useful information concerning watershed management and may be applicable to other basins with similar properties that are experiencing similar coastal environmental issues.
