Background: Despite the increasing survival rates, liver transplant patients experience numerous postoperative complications and encounter significant challenges in long-term self-management. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of empowerment education in enhancing self-management skills and self-efficacy among liver transplant recipients. Methods: A randomized, single-blind, single-center trial was conducted in China between August 2019 and September 2020, involving liver transplant recipients. The intervention group received 12 weeks of empowerment education, while the control group received 12 weeks of routine education..The study assessed the patients' self-management and self-efficacy using the Liver Transplant Recipient Self-Management Questionnaire and the Self-efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 1, 3, and 6 months after the intervention. Results: Eighty-four patients were initially randomized to either the intervention group (n1 = 42) or the routine education group (n2 = 42). Twelve patients were excluded from the analysis due to loss of follow-up or discontinuation of the intervention, leaving 72 patients (n1 = 35, n2 = 37) for the final analysis. The scores for exercise and lifestyle management were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group at 1, 3, and 6 months after the intervention (t = 3.047, 5.875, 8.356, and t = 5.759, 4.681, 11.759, respectively; P < 0.05). At 3 and 6 months after the intervention, the scores for cognitive symptom management, communication with physicians, and self-efficacy were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (t = 5.609, 6.416, and t = 5.576, 11.601, and t = 6.867, 15.071, respectively; P < 0.001). Within the intervention group, self-management scores increased significantly over time, while within the control group, the scores for communication with physicians, lifestyle, and self-efficacy showed a significant decline from 3 to 6 months after routine health education. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that empowerment education is an effective means of improving the self-management and self-efficacy of liver transplant patients, with better outcomes compared to routine health education. These findings have important implications for nursing practice and provide valuable guidance for clinical education of liver transplant patients. Trial registration: ChiCTR2200061561. Background: Caregivers of lung cancer patients frequently experience psychological distress and high caregiver burden. Previous studies have focused on caregiver burden for patients with advanced lung cancer, while few studies focused on the caregiver burden among informal caregivers of postoperative patients with early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Objectives: This study aimed to (a) examine caregiver burden for caregivers of patients with early‐stage NSCLC after surgical treatment and (b) identify predictive factors related to caregiver burden of patients with early‐stage NSCLC. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted in a university‐affiliated hospital in Changsha, China. A total of 385 patients with early‐stage NSCLC and postsurgical treatment and their caregivers were included in this study. Caregiver burden was evaluated using the Zarit caregiver burden interview (ZBI). A set of questionnaires was used to assess psychosocial characteristics of participants, including simplified coping style questionnaire, social support rate scale, and hospital anxiety and depression scale. Hierarchical regression analysis was applied to identify factors associated with caregiver burden. We followed STROBE checklist for reporting the study. Results: The average ZBI score was 29.1 ± 11.4. Most caregivers (62.6%) demonstrated mild to moderate caregiving burden. The duration of caregiving (β = 0.18, p <.001), passive coping of caregiver (β = 0.17, p =.001) and anxiety (β = 0.13, p =.007) were significant predictors of caregiving burden. A variance of 17.6% in caregiving burden was explained by these identified factors. Conclusions: Caregivers of early‐stage NSCLC patients experience a mild to moderate level of caregiver burden. The duration of caregiving, passive coping and anxiety are factors associated with caregiver burden. Background: This study aimed at investigating: 1) the relationship between self-care agency and depression and anxiety; 2) the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with depression and anxiety in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in China.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. One-hundred and five patients with DR were recruited. Self-care agency was assessed by the exercise of self-care agency (ESCA) scale. Depression and anxiety were assessed by the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS-D and HADS-A). Pearson or Spearman correlations were performed to assess the association between self-care agency and depression and anxiety. Stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the contribution of the sociodemographic and clinical factors to depression and anxiety.Results: Thirty-six (34.3%) and 43 (41.1%) patients exhibited depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Only 24 (22.9%) patients showed a high self-care agency. The ESCA total and subscale scores were negatively correlated depressive symptoms (P < 0.05). Self-care skills were negatively correlated with anxiety symptoms (P < 0.05). ESCA total score, rural residence, history of hypertension and visual acuity were associated with depression; self-care skills and diastolic blood pressure were associated with anxiety.Conclusions: Self-care agency negatively correlates with depression and anxiety in patients with DR. Special attention should be paid to patients living in rural areas and/or those having a history of hypertension when assessing depression and anxiety in patients with DR. Background: Various guidelines recommend that all adults diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) should be offered an evidence based, structured education programme (SEP) to optimize self-management care. China has a 13,000 annual increase in newly diagnosed T1D cases, of which 65% are adults. However, there is yet no validated SEP targeted to T1D patients in China. The purpose of this study is to establish a structured T1D self-management education programme—'Type 1 Diabetes Education in Lifestyle and Self Adjustment' (TELSA) that is adapted to medical and cultural practices in China. Methods: TELSA programme was developed based on the ADDIE model, following three steps: i) Semi-structured interviews were administered to 10 healthcare professionals (HCPs) and 13 T1D patients. Different topic guides, focusing on 4 dimensions including goals, contents, format of delivery, and quality assurance, were designed for either HCPs or patients. The interviews were recorded and analysed with thematic analysis. ii) Extracted themes were modified according to Delphi consultation. iii) Preliminary courses were conducted as pilot study to evaluate the effects of TELSA and optimization of the curriculum was finalized accordingly. Results: A total of 18 themes in 4 dimensions of the programme design were identified in the final version: i) goals: 'behaviour modification' and 'outcome improvement'; ii) contents: 'living with T1D', 'self-monitoring of blood glucose', 'knowing insulin', 'insulin dose adjustment', 'carbohydrates and carbohydrate counting', 'hypoglycaemia', 'complications of diabetes', 'managing psychological issues', 'physical activity', and 'question-and-answer'; iii) format: 'multidisciplinary team combined with peer support', 'face-to-face education followed by remote learning', and '2-day programme held on weekends'; and iv) quality assurance: 'after-class quiz', 'patients' feedback', and 'long-term evaluation on effectiveness'. Conclusions: A type 1 diabetes structured education programme in China was set up and shown to be applicable under local medical, social, and cultural environment. Trial registration: NCT03610984. Background: Due to lack of companionship of parents, compared with non left behind children, left behind children (LBC) suffer from more psychological problems compared with children live with their parents. The aim of this study was to explore the mental health status and the relationship among psychological problems and the related factors of LBC. Method: Adopting delaminating-random-group sampling and using region, county, village (town) as sampling framework, we utilized Demographic Data Recording Form, Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List, Scale of APGAR, Perceived Social Support Scale, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Self-Esteem Scale and Scale of Mental Health for Chinese Middle-school Student to assess 1309 left behind child in junior middle school students' mental health in Hunan. Statistic description, Structural equation model was adopted to analyze the data. Result: There was a significant difference in score of psychological problems between LBC and non-LBC(F = 18.224, P<0.000). Life event was the major factor(r = .487) that affected psychological problems (path coefficient, PC = 0.08) directly and affect psychological problems indirectly through affecting passive coping (PC = 0.01)and family functioning(PC = 0.02); family functioning impacted psychological problems indirectly through affecting social support (PC = 4.89) and self-esteem (PC = 0.10); social support (PC = -0.02), passive coping (PC =0.07) and active coping PC = -0.04) affected psychological problems directly. Psychoticism (P) (PC = 0.11), Neuroticism (N) influenced psychological problems of LBC both directly (PC = 0.04) and indirectly through affecting self-esteem (PC: P:-1.87; N: -0.83), while Extraversion/Introversion (E) (PC = 0.21) only impact psychological problems indirectly through self-esteem. Altogether, these variables accounted for 50.2% of total variance of psychological problems (F = 130.470, P = 0.000) for LBC. Conclusion: In this research we proved that LBC have more sever psychological problems than non-LBC. We also identified the direct and indirect influential factors of psychological problems of LBC. Background: Hypertension is one of the leading causes of disease burden across the world. In China, the latest nationwide survey of prevalence of hypertension was ten year ago, and data in rural areas is little known. More information about hypertension prevalence could help to improve overall antihypertensive health care. We aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of hypertension in rural areas of China. Methods: Comprehensive electronic searches of PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Chinese Web of Knowledge, Wangfang, Weipu and SinoMed databases were conducted to identify any study in each database published from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2013, reporting the prevalence of hypertension in Chinese rural areas. Prevalence estimates were stratified by age, area, sex, publication year, and sample size. All statistical calculations were made using the Stata Version 11.0 (College Station, Texas) and Statsdirect Version 2.7.9. Results: We identified 124 studies with a total population of 3,735,534 in the present meta-analysis. Among people aged 18 years old in Chinese rural areas, the summarized prevalence is 22.81% (19.41%–26.41%). Subgroup analysis shows the following results: for male 24.46% (21.19%–27.89%, for female 22.17% (18.25%–26.35%). For 2004–2006: 18.94% (14.41%–23.94%), for 2007–2009, 21.24% (15.98%–27.01%) for 2010–2013: 26.68%, (20.79%–33.02%). For Northern region 25.76% (22.36%–29.32%), for Southern region 19.30%, (15.48%–24.08%). Conclusions: The last decade witnessed the growth in prevalence of hypertension in rural areas of China compared with the fourth national investigation, which has climbed the same level as the urban area. The article discusses a study by Lezhi Li and colleagues to translate the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale into Chinese (C-PDSS) and to establish the psychometric properties of the C-PDSS. It offers details related to the three phases and the use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It is inferred that C-PDSS is satisfactory in screening postpartum depression among Chinese mothers and also suggested further research.

Objective: Self-management is beneficial for improving health outcomes in adults with type 1 diabetes. However, there are no validated instruments to assess self-management in Chinese adults with type 1 diabetes. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Self-Management of Type 1 Diabetes for Chinese Adults (SMOD-CA) scale., Methods: Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to develop the SMOD-CA.We conducted a literature review and semi-structured interviews to generate an initial item pool. An expert panel examined the content validity. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to evaluate scale reliability and validity. A total of 243 participants were recruited. Exploratory factor analyses were used to test the construct validity, and internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed., Results: The expert panel determined that the SMOD-CA content validity index was satisfactory. The final 30-item scale consisted of four factors explaining 49.50% of the total variance in the data. Cronbach's α was 0.901 for the total scale and 0.911 for test-retest reliability., Conclusions: The SMOD-CA demonstrated good reliability and validity. The scale is a credible and effective instrument that can be used by social workers and health care professionals to assess self-management in Chinese adults with type 1 diabetes. Background: Nurses in emergency departments have to provide rescue care and life support for moribund patients, but also emotional support to patients' relatives. On the other hand, emergency nurses are also the most vulnerable to the sudden death of patients. Nurses working in the emergency department were invited to participate in a death education course., Objective: To explore the impact of a death education course on the emergency nurses' perception of effective behavioral responses in dealing with sudden death., Design: A quasi-experimental study., Settings: A level A tertiary general hospital in China., Participants: A total number of 34 emergency nurses who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected from the emergency department., Methods: Participants received a death education course of 20 credit hours based on dealing with a sudden-death model. The general data questionnaire and the Chinese version of the list proposed by Fraser & Atkins were completed before the intervention and six weeks post-intervention. The scores of each item in the effective behavioral response to the sudden death questionnaire of the emergency nurses before and after the intervention were compared., Results: After the intervention, the nurses considered that 10 items were relatively helpful (above 4 points) and 2 items relatively less helpful (<3 points). The post-intervention average scores of all items were higher than the pre-intervention ones, and there were significant differences in the scores of the 13 items pre- and post-intervention., Conclusion: The death education course enhanced emergency nurses' perceptions of effective behavioral responses in dealing with sudden death, which contributes to the improvement of the quality of their work., (Copyright © 2019. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate anxiety sensitivity (AS) in female Chinese nurses to better understand its characteristics and relationship with nursing stress based on the following hypotheses: (1) experienced nurses have higher AS than newly admitted nurses; and (2) specific nursing stresses are associated with AS after controlling general stress., Setting: The cross-sectional survey was conducted from May 2014 to June 2015 among female nurses at the provincial and primary care levels in Hunan Province, China., Participants: Among 793 nurses who volunteered to participate, 745 returned and completed the questionnaires. Eligible participants are healthy female nurses aged 18-55 years and exempt from a history of psychiatric disorder or severe somatic disease and/or a family history of psychiatric disorder., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: AS was assessed by the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3). Anxiety symptoms, general stress and nursing stress were measured by the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Nursing Stress Scale (NSS)., Results: There were significant differences overall and in the three dimensions of AS across nurses of different career stages (all p<0.05). Middle and late career nurses had higher AS than early career nurses (all p<0.05), while no significant difference was found between middle and late career nurses. Conflict with physicians and heavy workload had a significant effect on all aspects of AS, whereas lack of support was related to cognitive AS (all p<0.05)., Conclusions: After years of exposure to stressful events during nursing, experienced female nurses may become more sensitive to anxiety. Middle career stage might be a critical period for psychological intervention targeting on AS. Hospital administrators should make efforts to reduce nurses' workload and improve their professional status. Background: We investigated the influence of multiple factors on the incidence of occupational blood and body fluid exposures (BBFEs) in health care workers (HCWs) in Guizhou, China, using structural equation modeling (SEM)., Methods: SEM tested in general hospitals was evaluated using survey data from a sample of 1,774 HCWs from 25 hospitals in Guizhou, China, between January and April 2014., Results: The incidence of occupational BBFEs in HCWs was affected by HCWs' knowledge of safe work practices, HCWs' belief in their ability to use safe work practices, HCWs' use of safe work practices, the workplace safety environment, sufficiency of the controls implemented at health care facilities, and workloads. Knowledge of safe work practices had the most influence on the incidence of occupational BBFE in doctors and laboratory technicians. Odds of major depression have significantly increased among adults with chronic diseases. However, the diagnosis of depression is often unrecognized in China. To know the prevalence of depression in medical inpatients with different chronic diseases and to assess the level of unrecognized depression among hospitalized patients, we assessed depression in patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic pulmonary heart disease. In this study, it has been shown that 78.9% of patients with pulmonary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, or coronary heart disease have different levels of depression. There were no significant differences in incidence of depression among different gender, age, education levels, marital status, or course of disease. There were no significant differences in total incidence rate of depression and in incidence rate of different levels of depression among the three groups of patients. It is very important to help patients with chronic diseases to reduce their depression by psychological nursing after evaluating their mental status.
