Although the Chinese government has implemented a variety of measures, the gender wage gap in 21st century China has not decreased. A significant body of literature has studied this phenomenon using sector segmentation theory, but these studies have overlooked the importance of the collective economy beyond the public and private sectors. Moreover, they have lacked assessment of the gender wage gap across different wage groups, hindering an accurate estimation of the gender wage gap in China, and the formulation of appropriate recommendations. Utilizing micro-level data from 2004, 2008, and 2013, this paper examines trends in the gender wage gap within the public sector, private sector, and collective economy. Employing a selection bias correction based on the multinomial logit model, this study finds that the gender wage gap is smallest and most stable within the public sector. Furthermore, the private sector surpasses the collective economy in this period, becoming the sector with the largest gender wage gap. Meanwhile, a recentered influence function regression reveals a substantial gender wage gap among the low-wage population in all three sectors, as well as among the high-wage population in the private sector. Additionally, employing Brown wage decomposition, this study concludes that inter-sector, rather than intra-sector, differences account for the largest share of the gender wage gap, with gender discrimination in certain sectors identified as the primary cause. The present research examined the changes in Chinese university students' motivation to learn German during a 16-week semester. Analyses of the data showed that both at the beginning and toward the end of the semester, the participants held (fairly) positive attitudes towards German, were motivated to learn the language mainly for integrative and instrumental reasons, and studied the language hard. Towards the end of the semester, they became significantly more integratively motivated to learn German yet made significantly less effort to learn the language.

To verify the impact mechanism between infrastructure capital investment and regional economic growth in China, this study first estimates production capital stocks of the infrastructure by Perpetual Inventory Method (PIM) based on a balanced panel dataset for 31 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities covering 1993–2017, then analyses the important mediating role of regional innovation capacity in the relationship between infrastructure capital investment and regional economic growth in China. The empirical results indicate that infrastructure capital investment can effectively promote economic growth in China. Furthermore, through analysing the mediating impact mechanism, the infrastructure capital investment can indirectly affect regional economic growth through the regional innovation capacity. When fully considering the potential heterogeneity, the mediating effect of developed regions is more significant than that of underdeveloped regions, and such a mediating effect is increasing with deepening industrialization. Therefore, a harmonious relationship between infrastructure capital investment and economic growth can be achieved if policymakers attempt to arouse the positive mediating role of regional innovation capacity when formulating relevant policies. The idea that the wage gap (W.G.) between the public sector (P.U.S.) and private sectors (P.R.S.) has widened is a point of contention among scholars, but to date, there has been no systematic discussion of changes in the W.G. and their causes in China. This article combines data from China's Urban Household Survey (U.H.S.) for 2004, 2008 and 2013 to examine changes in between-sector W.G.s and identify the causal factors by wage decomposition methods. Using ordinary least squares and a Heckman sample selection model, this study finds that public-sector workers consistently earn more than private-sector workers and that the W.G. is expanding, especially in upstream industries where state-owned enterprises (S.O.E.s) have monopoly status. In addition, the Oaxaca–Blinder (O.B.) decomposition method is adopted to reveal that the characteristic effect is the main cause of the W.G. Further, the regression and decomposition of the recentered influence function show that the effect of characteristics and coefficient effects differ across wage quantiles. This article indicates that the intersectoral W.G. in China is widening mainly as a result of differences in labour endowments and provides evidence to support government decision-making. Background: Purple soil has a fragile structure and is highly vulnerable to soil erosion and phosphorus (P) loss risks. Despite this, the region is endowed with abundant crop residue resources. To ensure sustainable agricultural development in this area, we conducted a study to investigate the impact of crop residue removal on soil aggregate structure, soil erosion, and the risk of P loss. Methods: We conducted a three-year on-farm experiment and analyzed various soil parameters. These parameters include mean weight diameter ( M W D ), geometric mean diameter ( G M D ), soil aggregates with a diameter greater than 0.25 mm ( R > 0.25 m m ), saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil erosion estimated by RUSLE 2, total soil phosphorus (TP) concentration, geometric mean concentration of TP ( G M C ), and geometric mean concentration of TP adjusted for aggregate size ( G M C d ). Results: Retaining all crop residue can significantly improve soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, which was 2.56 times higher than the complete removal treatment. After three years of experimentation, compared to four months, the 50% residue removal treatment increased the G M C d by 32.7%, while the 0% removal treatment increased the G M C d by 16.6%. Both improvements were higher than the complete removal treatment. Partial or complete removal of the crop residue can reduce the soil aggregate stability and increase the risk of soil erosion and P loss. Conclusions: The G M C and G M C d have the potential to serve as indicators for evaluating soil P loss risk. Removing crop residues can cause the degradation of the structure of purple soil aggregates, thus resulting in increased soil erosion and P loss. Background: Apatinib (YN968D1) is the first small-molecule-targeting drug with anti-tumor activity created in China for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer (GC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It showed significant variation in the efficacy for treating cancers, including advanced non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Whether its efficacy could be optimized by subgrouping patients with certain genetic variation remains elusive. Methods: Here, we firstly used kinase screening to identify any possible target of apatinib against 138 kinases. The effects of apatinib on proliferation rates, cell cycle, cell apoptosis, and cell migration on cancer cell lines were analyzed; the in vitro potential pathways of apatinib on cancer cell lines were screened. The effect of apatinib on mouse cancer models in vivo was also analyzed. Results: Based on HCC364 cells with BRAF V600E mutation, we have shown that apatinib could inhibit their growth, migration, cell cycle, and induce their apoptosis. Based on mice with transplanted HCC364 cells, we have also shown that apatinib could inhibit the tumor growth. Based on immunohistochemistry, we have demonstrated that apatinib could suppress the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase and extracellular regulated protein kinases. This may account at least part of the apatinib's inhibitory effect on HCC364 cancer cells. Conclusions: BRAF V600E protein kinase is a target of apatinib by kinase screening. We have demonstrated that apatinib can effectively inhibit tumor cells with BRAF V600E mutation by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Our results have demonstrated that targeting BRAF V600E mutation, apatinib appears to be effective and safe for treating NSCLC and possibly other cancers with the same mutation. BACKGROUND: Human error types and error factors are two important elements of error analysis. Understanding the relationship between them can contribute to new case analyses, the tendency of error occurrence statistics, error factor identification, and prevention of error recurrence. OBJECTIVE: To provide evidence and guidance for the prevention and improvement of medication communication errors by quantitatively exploring the relationship between error types and error factors. METHODS: Data were collected on self-reported errors in the medication administration process by nurses in all departments of three cooperative medical institutions, and an error sheet of specified style was adopted. Error types were determined by the systematic human error reduction and prediction approach method and human cognition processes. Error factors were extracted using the root cause analysis combined with Berlo's communication model, and the relationship between error types and error factors was quantitatively studied using the partial least-squares regression method. RESULTS: After a one-by-one analysis of 303 error cases, the communication errors occurring in the nursing medication process could be explained by six error types and 12 error factors. In addition, 20 correlation patterns between the error types and error factors were quantitatively obtained, and their path coefficient distributions ranged from 0.088 to 0.467. CONCLUSION: The results of this study may provide reference to understand errors and establish countermeasures from the statistics of error occurrence trends, extract error factors related to error types and determine key error factors. The Lanping–Simao Basin is located on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, China, and contains massive evaporites. The origin of evaporites in the basin has been hotly debated because of the strong transformation by tectonic movement. Forty halite samples from borehole MK‐3 in the Mengyejing area of the basin were collected and analyzed using XRD, Cl‐Sr isotopes and chemical compositions to trace the origin of the evaporites in the basin. The Br × 103/Cl ratios of the halite samples are between 0 and 0.55, most of which are synchronized with the law of seawater evaporation and at the stage of halite precipitation from seawater, indicating that the evaporites are mainly of marine origin. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.707489 to 0.711279; after correction, the 87Sr/86Sr 145 Ma ratios range from 0.704721 to 0.707611, equivalent with the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of seawater at 145 Ma, indicating a marine origin. The decay of 87Rb in the evaporite during deposition, change of the depositional environment and the unsealed environment at a later period resulted in the present 87Sr/86Sr ratios of some samples being high. The δ37Cl value compositions range from –0.38‰ to 0.83‰, which is consistent with the δ37Cl value composition of the world marine halite (–0.6‰ to 0.4‰), further confirming that seawater is the main origin. In addition, the high δ37Cl value of some samples at the boundary of the upper and lower evaporite layers might be related to the influence of δ37Cl‐rich brine and the incomplete dissolution of the halite. Wuzhi capsule (WZC), a preparation of Fructus Schisandra sphenanthera extract, has been used widely for the treatment of viral and drug‐induced hepatitis in China. This study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of tacrolimus (TAC) when co‐administered with WZC and the dose‐effect of WZC on tacrolimus in healthy volunteers. The effect of an increased dosage of WZC (1, 2, 6, and 8 capsules once daily) on the relative oral exposure of tacrolimus was assessed to explore the dose–response relationship between WZC and tacrolimus using bioanalysis, pharmacokinetic, and genotypical analyses. The influence of CYP3A5 and MDR1 genetic polymorphisms on the WZC dose was elucidated by maintaining the Ctrough of tacrolimus in Chinese healthy volunteers. When co‐administered with WZC, the Tmax of tacrolimus was increased significantly while the apparent oral clearance was decreased. The plasma tacrolimus level in volunteers with high CYP3A5 expression was much lower than that in those with mutant CYP3A5. However, polymorphisms of MDR1 exon26 C3435T, exon21 G2677T/A, and exon12 C1236T were not associated with plasma tacrolimus levels. Our findings provide important information on interactions between modern medications and herbal products, thus facilitating a better usage of tacrolimus in patients receiving WZC. Although the Chinese government has shifted from a one-child policy to a two-child policy (allowing a couple to have up to two children) since 2016 in response to the aging population, the policy results have been unsatisfactory. This is the first paper to systematically investigate the factors influencing residents' intentions to have a second child. The research focuses on the perspective of individual, family, and social characteristics based on the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) from 2017 to 2018. Three machine learning methods are used in conjunction with logistic regression to reveal that the intention of having a second child increases heavily with age, more siblings in the family of origin, and better health. The family income, which is currently the focus of the literature and is statistically significant, is only sixth most important. This study further reveals differences between genders: Women with a lower level of education and religious beliefs prefer to have a second child, whereas for men, non-agricultural hukou and marriage are the position factors. Approximately 172 million rural households in China in 2022, will still rely on traditional biofuels instead of electricity. This study explores the feasibility of achieving rural electrification in China utilization various Energy origins and assesses its potential impact on climate change mitigation. To do so, we employ the Regional Energy Model (REM) to formulate hypotheses for rural power distribution. Covering the era from 2020 until 2050. We evaluate consequences in terms of greenhouse gas discharges, principal energy consumption, associated expenses by comparing these possibilities with a Business- as -Usual (BU) scenario. Our findings reveal that diesel-based arrangements tend to produce 'the maximum Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, trailed by network-based solutions. Electrification focused on renewable energy-driven applications has the potential to reduce total CO2 emissions by up to 97 % and primary energy consumption by 43 % in 2050 compared to the BU scenario. We also find that electrification through decentralized diesel systems tends to be the priciest choice. Rural electrification utilizing renewable energy emerges as a cost-effective choice when the majority of end-use applications rely on renewable energy sources. However, it becomes less economical than network expansions when electric end-user appliances are predominant. In recent years, China has introduced the Universal Two-Child Policy (UTCP), which means that a couple can have two children. The implementation of this policy may affect female employment. Based on this background, this work aims to the impact of UTCP on the number and employment of Chinese women workers, and find out the countermeasures for the adverse impact of the policy. Firstly, the role of the Propensity Score Matching-Differences in Differences model is introduced, and the average and dynamic effects of UTCP on women's employment are discussed by using the Propensity Score Matching model. Secondly, the survey data on issues related to female employment after the implementation of UTCP from 2016 to 2020 is analyzed. Finally, a conclusion is drawn according to the survey data. The results demonstrate that the implementation of UTCP widens the income gap between men and women. Meanwhile, the younger the couple, the greater the income gap. Besides, the unemployment rate changes slightly after the introduction of the policy. As the growth rate of female income is significantly lower than that of men of the same age, UTCP has little impact on the employment of Chinese female workers, but has a great impact on the quality of employment. Among all the respondents, the proportion of employed men is higher than employed women, which is about 64% ~ 65%. However, it is still unknown whether age, education, family characteristics, nationality, occupations, and economic development of the province have a certain impact on female income, which is worth noting by follow-up research. On the whole, the full liberalization of the second child has little impact on the employment of female workers in China, but has a great impact on the quality of employment. The present work lays a foundation for the study of the impact of UTCT on female employment in future, and offers a certain reference for the further study of the impact of the policy on employment in the future. Background: The high prevalence of periodontal diseases is an important oral health problem worldwide. It is necessary to increase public knowledge on and influence attitudes towards periodontal diseases in order to prevent them. However, the effect of oral health education (OHE) as a primary preventive method in China is unsatisfactory. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of extending an e-learning course regarding periodontal health by comparing the effects of oral health education regarding periodontal health (OHE-PH) on dental and non-dental students and the effects between a traditional course and an e-learning course among non-dental students at Sichuan University. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and a post-test was performed. A total of 217 dental students and 134 non-dental students attended a traditional course; 69 non-dental students attended an e-learning course. Before- and after-course questionnaires about periodontal health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours were administered. Results: After the traditional/e-learning course, the knowledge of both dental and non-dental students about periodontal diseases and self-reported behaviours for gingival bleeding and oral care improved. The non-dental students reached or surpassed the level of dental students before the course. The non-dental students taking the e-learning course performed better in some areas than those taking the traditional course. Conclusions: OHE-PH was effective for dental and non-dental students. The e-learning course on OHE-PH was sufficient for improving knowledge and self-reported behaviours among non-dental undergraduates and was even better than the traditional course in some areas. From the discourse analysis perspective, ecopolitics has experienced a discourse change from authoritarianism to democracy. This study uses theory of authoritarianism and democracy in ecopolitics to explore the impact of authoritarian ecopolitical discourse (AED) and democratic ecopolitical discourse (DED) on environmental quality in China. After analysis using panel data and comparison of three main regions, results suggest a negative relationship between AED of the central government and environmental quality. By contrast, a positive relationship exists between AED of local governments and environmental quality. A positive relationship exists between DED, which measures the proposals of People's Congress deputies and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and environmental quality. Nevertheless, the positive effect of DED is weaker than that of AED. The impact is also different among the regions. Our interpretations are as follows. China's current governance mechanism is a top–down decision-making mechanism, rather than a bottom–up information transmission mechanism. The concentration of power keeps decision-making power and resources away from levels with considerably accurate information and capabilities in problem solving. Therefore, we suggest that governments should change their decision-making process and exert effort to be transparent to the entire society. A bottom–up mechanism of information collection and transmission should be established, such as environmental inspection mechanism and checking on cadres' achievements with green GDP. Objective: To summarize the characteristics of muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase antibody-positive myasthenia gravis (MuSK-MG) in Northeast China. Methods: We retrospectively collected 183 confirmed MG patients and divided them into three groups based on the type of serum antibodies: MuSK-MG (14 cases), acetylcholine receptor (AChR)-MG (130 cases), and double-seronegative (DSN)-MG (39 cases). The clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognosis data were analyzed. Results: MuSK antibody was detected in 26.7% of seronegative MG. The mean age of onset in MuSK-MG was 53.2 ± 13.6 years. Fifty percent of MuSK-MG patients with an onset symptom of pure ocular muscle weakness. The time from onset to other muscle groups' involvement and the time from onset to myasthenic crisis had no significant difference among the three groups (P > 0.05). The proportion of Osserman classification I in MuSK-MG group was lower than that in DSN-MG group. The proportion of Osserman classification IV in MuSK-MG group was higher than that in the other two groups. The incidences of other coexisting autoimmune diseases in MuSK-MG group were higher. Prognosis after the treatment of steroid combined with tacrolimus for MuSK-MG was similar to AChR-MG treated with steroid combined with an immunosuppressant agent (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with MuSK-MG in Northeast China have a modestly later onset age and a proportion of patients may have a mild form of the disease with delayed disease progression. We confirmed the existence of a rare ocular MuSK-MG phenotype, a high proportion of coexisting with other autoimmune diseases, and a good response to steroids combined with tacrolimus for our MuSK-MG series. Background: Better understanding of the danger zone anatomy in mesial roots (MRs) of mandibular first molars (MFMs) may serve to decrease the risk of mishaps. This study aimed to measure the minimal distal dentine thicknesses of danger zone in MRs of MFMs in a native Chinese population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT images of 1792 MFMs from 898 Chinese patients were analyzed. The minimal distal dentine thicknesses of the mesiobuccal (MB) and mesiolingual (ML) canals below the furcation 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 mm were measured. The association between the minimal distal dentine thicknesses and the root lengths, patient's age and gender, side were assessed. Results: The minimal distal dentine thicknesses of MB and ML canals are located 3 ∼ 4 mm below the furcation for both men and women. There are no differences between MB and ML canals, while the minimal distal dentine thicknesses of MB and ML canals were higher in men than women (P < 0.05), except at 1 and 3 mm of ML canals (P > 0.05). The minimal distal dentine thicknesses of MB and ML canals increased with age in both men and women at each location (P < 0.05). The minimum distal dentine thickness at every location were significantly different between long teeth and short teeth both in men and women (P < 0.05), with short teeth having the smallest mean values. There are no significant differences between two sides (P > 0.05). Based on a survey of 355 international students studying at seven universities in Chengdu, China, this article analyses the reasons for their choosing to study in China. The main methods employed are factor analysis and associated nonparametric tests. Results reveal that the quality of Chinese education and Chinese specialities are the most important reasons. In addition, personal referral sources, tuition and living costs, bilateral relations between China and home countries, and policy incentives at the destination, are also important. There are differences between students from developing and developed countries. Students from developing countries placed more emphasis on the quality of Chinese education, suggestions from relatives/friends, and geographic proximity. Those from developed countries referred more frequently to costs and policy incentives. Students who chose courses focusing on Chinese culture, society and language tended to be attracted by human interest, while students who chose courses on other subjects paid more attention to the quality and content of the teaching. Trees on the side directly exposed to sunlight generally grow faster than on the opposite side, a phenomenon termed plant phototropism. There are in situ vertical trunks of silicified wood in the Xiadelongwan area of Yanqing County, north Beijing, where the first National Geologic Park of Petrified Wood of China has been built since 2002. A few trunks have well-preserved growth rings. One petrified stump from the formation shows a positive phototropism direction of SW230°. As compared with the modern normal growth stumps in Beijing plain area, which have a positive phototropism direction of SW210 ° ± 5°, the evidence of wood phototropism supports the conclusion of previous palaeomagnetic studies that the North China Plate has rotated clockwise since the Late Jurassic. The known petrified wood stumps in the Yanshan-Liaoning area are mainly found from the strata of 165-136 Ma, which corresponds to the main stage of the Yanshanian Movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The distribution and storage of soil organic carbon serve as basic data for the study of soil productivity, soil hydrological properties, and the balance among carbon-based greenhouse gases. In this study, the organic carbon storage and density distribution characteristics of the soil in the Zhifanggou catchment on the Loess Plateau were studied based on field investigations, laboratory measurement, and geostatistics analysis. A total of 1,282 soil samples were collected from 215 sites in addition to 10 profiles from the catchment. The landuse within the catchment was divided into 4 types: farmland, grassland, shrubland, and woodland. The following results were obtained. 1. In the Zhifanggou catchment, the average organic carbon content of the soil at a depth of 0–100cm is between 2.81 and 3.50g·kg−1. The soil organic carbon content (SOCC) for different landuse types follows the trend shrubland>woodland>grassland>farmland, whereas the soil bulk density follows. The relationship between soil organic carbon content and bulk density follows a power law function. 2. The soil organic carbon density (SOCD) at a depth of 0–100cm is 1.24–8.34kgm−2. The coefficient of variation is 0.40, indicating a moderate variation in the average carbon density of 2.63kgm−2. The soil organic carbon density for different landuse types follows the trend shrubland>woodland>grassland>farmland. In the entire catchment, the proportion of average soil organic carbon density at a depth of 0–20cm is 50.24%, which decreases with soil depth. The spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon density is closely related to the landuse types and topography. 3. The total soil organic carbon storage (SOCS) at a depth of 0–100cm in the Zhifanggou catchment is 21.84×106 kg. The relationship between soil depth and total organic carbon storage is linear. Aimed at the explanation of clear tidal signal and storm surge signals in a closed inland lake near the coast (the Huguangyan Lake), this work uses a combined approach with observations and model experiments. Huguangyan Lake is a closed inland freshwater coneless volcanic crater lake near the coast in tropical southern China, less than 5 km from an estuary. It has a diameter of about 1.5 km and relatively deep water of up to 20 m. Bottom pressure was measured from an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) for 10 days in September 2018 and 10 days in January 2019. The observations encompass the period of Typhoon Mangkhut, which passed the region when it made its landfall. The time series demonstrate clear tidal and subtidal signals. The tidal signal remains even if we exclude the barometric pressure effect. Interestingly, the lake has no surface connection with the ocean. The astronomical tide has an amplitude of about 2 cm. The major tidal signals include the principal solar semidiurnal (S2) and lunisolar (K1) constituents. During the passage of Typhoon Mangkhut, the water level variability inside the lake increased by an order of magnitude (>0.3 m). To examine whether the lake water level change was due to the natural oscillations inside the lake (or seiche), a numerical wind-driven hydrodynamics model was designed using the 3-D Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). The results show that a small first-order seiche can be generated, but only with a time scale of minutes and with a magnitude much smaller than the observed surface elevation changes. This excludes any measurable seiche and the observed surface elevation change inside the lake cannot be wind-driven. Moreover, tides inside the lake are not generated by tidal potential, as the lake is too small for having a locally generated tide. The main result of our study has therefore excluded the local tidal-generating force, wind-driven seiche, and barometric effect, as possible causes of the lake oscillation which has tidal and subtidal signals. The subtidal variation is at least one order of magnitude greater than tides inside the lake and is caused by weather-induced overall coastal ocean water level oscillations transmitted into the lake through groundwater connection. Using cruise observations before and after the typhoon Chebi in August 2013 and those without the typhoon in July 2012, this study investigates variations in current structure, nutrient distribution, and transports disturbed by a typhoon in a typical coastal upwelling zone east of Hainan Island in the northwestern South China Sea. The results show that along-shore northeastward flow dominates the coastal ocean with a volume transport of 0.64 × 106 m3/s in the case without the typhoon. The flow reversed southwestward, with its volume transport halved before the typhoon passage. After the typhoon passage, the flow returned back northeastward except the upper layer in waters deeper than 50 m and the total volume transport decreased to 0.10 × 106 m3/s. For the cross-shelf component, the flow kept shoreward, while transports crossing the 50 m isobath decreased from 0.25, 0.12 to 0.06 × 106 m3/s in the case without the typhoon as well as before and after typhoon passage, respectively. For the along-shore/cross-shelf nutrient transports, SiO32− has the largest value of 866.13/632.74 μmol/s per unit area, NO3− half of that, and PO43− and NO2− one order smaller in the offshore water without the typhoon. The values dramatically decreased to about one-third for SiO32−, NO3−, and PO43− after the typhoon, but changed little for NO2−. Background: Based on a national survey in 2015, people's oral health behaviour (OHB) has not kept up with the pace of knowledge and attitudes in China after decades of oral health education (OHE). Thus, we need to improve OHE to strengthen people's OHB. Undergraduates are regarded as the best candidates for the improvement of OHE. The objective of this study is to determine undergraduates' oral health status and existing problems in OHB by comparing dental and non-dental students at Sichuan University. We hope to provide some suggestions for future OHE to improve people's OHB. Methods: A quasi-experimental study designed with a pre-test and post-test group was conducted. A total of 217 dental students and 135 non-dental students were enrolled. They were administered an OHE course focused on OHB. A survey about oral health behaviour and knowledge was conducted before and after the course. Results: According to the pre-course survey, dental students surpassed non-dental students in terms of toothbrushing frequency, method, and time, but unfortunately, flossing was overlooked by all the students. After the course, both dental and non-dental students showed strong willingness to improve their OHB. More non-dental students than dental students were willing to use toothpicks and Chinese herbal toothpaste before and after the course. Conclusions: OHE focused on behaviour has a positive effect on university students. Future OHE and interventions should focus on flossing, toothbrushing methods, toothpicks, Chinese herbal toothpaste and modifications to adopt new media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mine soils are often polluted and degraded. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of soil properties and vegetation on soil solute transport in reclaimed soil at an opencast coal mine site on the Loess Plateau. Four reclaimed areas with different vegetation types were selected for the analysis of physical and chemical properties. The miscible displacement technique was used to obtain the breakthrough curves (BTCs) of NO 3 − ion transport in undisturbed soil columns, which were taken from the soil profiles of the different sites. The chemical properties, such as total N, P, K and SOM, exhibited low contents, and the soil physicochemical properties showed high heterogeneity between different depths and different reclaimed areas. The structural stability index was less than 5%. The initial and entire penetration times were longer in the deeper layers than in the top layer. The BTCs of NO 3 − were fitted well by the deterministic equilibrium convection dispersion equation (CDE) model. Preferential flow and transport were found in the soil columns. The reclaimed soil had poor structure, and planting vegetation improved the physiochemical properties of the soil. The soil solute transport parameters exhibited high heterogeneity between different samples and were significantly correlated with soil bulk density and soil texture, which were highly influenced by vegetation and human activities. In the process of land reclamation, increasing the bulk density and selecting fine-textured soils could reduce the average soil pore water velocity and the dispersivity coefficient, thereby extending the solute penetration time. • A novel generator start-up sequence optimization strategy is proposed in this work, taking the integration time of wind-solar hybrid systems into account. • The proposed model requires fewer variables compared with other models, therefore the computational efficiency can be greatly improved. • The confidence gap decision theory based generator start-up sequence strategy is proposed to address the generation uncertainty of wind-solar hybrid systems. • Better generator start-up sequence solutions with higher computational efficiency and less conservatism can be attained by employing the proposed strategy. A reasonable start-up sequence of generators considering renewable energy generation integration can effectively improve the restoration efficiency of the power system concerned. The restoration strategy of generators is time-sensitive, however, the computation procedure of existing methods is not fast enough to meet the requirements of practical applications. In this paper, the generator start-up sequence optimization (GSSO) problem is addressed with the integration of wind-solar hybrid systems (WSSs) considered in bulk power systems. Specifically, a deterministic model for GSSO is formulated to maximize the total generation capability during the restoration procedure, in which fewer auxiliary variables are required to promote the computational efficiency. On this basis, in order to deal with the inherent and significant uncertainties of WSSs, a confidence gap decision theory (CGDT) based approach is proposed combining the advantages of stochastic optimization and the information gap decision theory based method while considering the worst-case realization of unknown probability distributions, so that a chance-constrained robust generator start-up solution is thereby attained. Moreover, the formulated CGDT based model is transformed into a mixed integer linear programming problem. Finally, the IEEE 39-bus power system and a modified version of an actual power system in China are employed to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method. Gold mining has increased sharply in response to global demand. Gold extraction usually causes the formation of tailing dams, in which organic matter and microbial activity decrease, and this consequently constrains plant growth. However, a full understanding of plant-soil interaction and plant community development in terms of natural restoration of gold mine tailing dam has not yet been developed. Three tailing dams, which had been naturally restored for 2 (R2), 5 (R5), and 10 (R10) years in the Xiaoqinlin gold region of Central China, were chosen to explore soil and plant community development in August, 2015. This study showed that soil bulk density and pH value were the lowest, whereas soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen were the highest in the R10 tailing dam across two soil depths (0–10 cm and 10–20 cm). Soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen decreased with soil depth across the restoration periods. The highest ratio of soil organic carbon to total nitrogen in the R10 tailing dam suggests that the rate of soil organic carbon accumulation may be restricted by the total nitrogen content in the long-term. Restoration stimulated plant community diversity and productivity, due to increment in soil nutrient content and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. The various ratios of root biomass to aboveground plant biomass among three tailing dams were caused by the shifting of the plant community composition from annual to perennial varietals. The mechanism by which plant-soil interaction and plant community composition change over time can be used to guide restoration programs in tailing dams in Central China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China's fast pace industrialization and growing population has led to several accidental surface water pollution events in the last decades. The government of China, after the 2005 Songhua River incident, has pushed for the development of early warning systems (EWS) for drinking water source protection. However, there are still many weaknesses in EWS in China such as the lack of pollution monitoring and advanced water quality prediction models. The application of Data Driven Models (DDM) such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) has acquired recent attention as an alternative to physical models. For a case study in a south industrial city in China, a DDM based on genetic algorithm (GA) and ANN was tested to increase the response time of the city's EWS. The GA-ANN model was used to predict NH3–N, CODmn and TOC variables at station B 2 h ahead of time while showing the most sensitive input variables available at station A, 12 km upstream. For NH3–N, the most sensitive input variables were TOC, CODmn, TP, NH3–N and Turbidity with model performance giving a mean square error (MSE) of 0.0033, mean percent error (MPE) of 6% and regression (R) of 92%. For COD, the most sensitive input variables were Turbidity and CODmn with model performance giving a MSE of 0.201, MPE of 5% and R of 0.87. For TOC, the most sensitive input variables were Turbidity and CODmn with model performance giving a MSE of 0.101, MPE of 2% and R of 0.94. In addition, the GA-ANN model performed better for 8 h ahead of time. For future studies, the use of a GA-ANN modelling technique can be very useful for water quality prediction in Chinese monitoring stations which already measure and have immediately available water quality data. Tacrolimus is widely used in organ transplantation to prevent rejection. However, the narrow therapeutic window and the large inter-and intra-individual variability in the pharmacokinetics (PK) of tacrolimus make it difficult for individualization of dosing. This study aimed at developing a population pharmacokinetic model for estimating the oral clearance of tacrolimus in Chinese liver transplant patients, and identifying factors that contribute to the PK variability of tacrolimus. Data of 151 liver transplant patients who received tacrolimus were analyzed in this study. The population PK model was analyzed and the covariates including population demographic and biochemical characteristics, drug combination, and genetic polymorphism were explored using non-linear mixed-effects modeling approach. A single-compartment population PK model was developed, and the final model was CL/F = (14.6-2.38 × cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A5-3.72 × WZC+1.04 × (POD/9)+2.48 × COR) × Exp(η i ), where CYP3A5 was 1 for CYP3A5*3/*3, Wuzhi Capsule (WZC) was 1 when patients took tacrolimus combined with WZC, otherwise it was 0, corticosteroids (COR) was 1 when patients take tacrolimus combined with COR, otherwise, it was 0, POD was the post-operative day. Visual inspection and bootstrap indicated that the final model was stable and robust. In this study, we developed the first tacrolimus population PK model in Chinese adult liver transplant patients. We first determined the influence of WZC on tacrolimus in these people, which could provide useful PK information for the drug combination of tacrolimus and WZC. We also revealed the influence of genetic polymorphism of CYP3A5, POD, and a combination of COR on tacrolimus PK. Background: Chemotherapy-induced adverse effects (CIAEs) remain a challenging problem due to their high incidences and negative impacts on treatment in Chinese colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. We aimed to identify risk factors and predictive markers for CIAEs using food/nutrition data in CRC patients receiving post-operative capecitabine-based chemotherapy., Methods: Food/nutrition data from 130 Chinese CRC patients were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify CIAE-related food/nutrition factors. Prediction models were constructed based on the combination of these factors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was used to evaluate the discrimination ability of models., Results: A total of 20 food/nutrition factors associated with CIAEs were identified in the univariate analysis after adjustments for total energy and potential confounding factors. Based on multivariate analysis, we found that, among these factors, dessert, eggs, poultry, and milk were associated with several CIAEs. Most importantly, poultry was an overall protective factor; milk and egg were risk factors for hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and bone marrow suppression (BMS), respectively. Developed multivariate models in predicting grade 1 to 3 CIAEs and grade 2/3 CIAEs both had good discrimination (AUROC values from 0.671 to 0.778, 0.750 to 0.946 respectively), which had potential clinical application value in the early prediction of CIAEs, especially for more severe CIAEs., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that patients with high milk and egg intakes should be clinically instructed to control their corresponding dietary intake to reduce the likelihood of developing HFS and BMS during capecitabine-based chemotherapy, respectively., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03030508.

Purpose: To determine risk factors and develop novel prediction models for chemotherapy-induced adverse effects (CIAEs) in Chinese colorectal cancer (CRC) patients receiving capecitabine., Methods: A total of 233 Chinese CRC patients receiving post-operative chemotherapy with capecitabine were randomly divided into a training set (70%) and a validation set (30%). CIAE-related hematological/body parameters were screened by univariate logistic regression. Based on a set of factors selected from LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) logistic regression, stepwise multivariate logistic regression was applied to develop prediction models. Area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test were used to evaluate the discriminatory ability and the goodness of fit of each model., Results: In total, 35 variables were identified to be associated with CIAEs in univariate analysis. Developed multivariable models had AUCs (area under curve) ranging from 0.625 to 0.888 and 0.428 to 0.760 in the training and validation set, respectively. The grade ≥ 1 anemia multivariable model achieved the best discriminatory ability with AUC of 0.760 (95%CI: 0.609-0.912) and good calibration with HL P value of 0.450. Then, a nomogram was constructed to predict grade ≥ 1 anemia, which included variables of age, pre-operative hemoglobin count, and pre-operative albumin count, with C-indexes of 0.775 and 0.806 in the training and validation set, respectively., Conclusions: This study identified valuable hematological/body parameters related to CIAEs. A nomogram based on the multivariable model including three hematological/body predictors can accurately predict grade ≥ 1 anemia, facilitating clinicians to implement personalized medicine early for Chinese CRC patients receiving post-operative chemotherapy for better safety treatment. Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major concern with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the positive influence of chemotherapy on the decline in CRC mortality, the negative influence of chemotherapy-related adverse effects (CRAEs) caused by capecitabine (Cap) remains a challenging problem. DNA methylation alteration plays a pivotal role in gene expression regulation. Here, we aimed to screen reliable and novel biomarkers for CRC diagnosis and CRAE prediction using the advanced Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC (850 K) BeadChip. Paired tumor and normal tissues from 21 Chinese CRC patients who received Cap-based adjuvant chemotherapy were analyzed. CRC-related methylation was characterized by hypermethylated promoter islands and hypomethylated intragenic openseas; CRAE-related methylation was characterized by hyper- (or hypo-) methylated intragenic (or intergenic) regions. Based on three types of methylation profiles (differentially methylated probes, differentially methylated regions, and gene-function-differentially methylated regions), pathway enrichment analyses revealed that CRC-related genes were significantly enriched in the neuronal system, metabolism of RNA, and extracellular matrix organization; CRAE-related genes were abundantly enriched in pathways controlling regeneration functions and immune response. Finally, based on genes within the mostly related pathways and LASSO logistic regression selection, the integrated-methylation-marker systems developed here demonstrated high discriminative accuracy in both CRC diagnosis (AUROC = 1) and CRAE prediction (AUROC = 0.817-1). In conclusion, we conducted a comprehensive DNA methylation analysis of CRC patients with chemotherapy, which provided new insights into the formation of CRC and CRAEs. Most importantly, our findings identified potentially CRAE-related metabolic pathways and markers, providing a valuable reference for personalized medicine promising better safety. Aim: To discover the novel ATP7B mutations in 103 southern Chinese patients with Wilson disease (WD), and to determine the spectrum and frequency of mutations in the ATP7B gene and genotype-phenotype correlation in a large-scale sample of Chinese WD patients., Methods: One hundred three WD patients from 101 unrelated families in southern China were enrolled in this study. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood. Direct sequencing of all 21 exons within ATP7B was performed. Subsequently, an extensive study of the overall spectrum and frequency of ATP7B mutations and genotype-phenotype correlation was performed in all Chinese patients eligible from the literature, combined with the current southern group., Results: In 103 patients with WD, we identified 48 different mutations (42 missense mutations, 4 nonsense mutations and 2 frameshifts). Of these, 3 mutations had not been previously reported: c.1510&#95;1511insA, c.2233C>A (p.Leu745Met) and c.3824T>C (p.Leu1275Ser). The c.2333G>T (p.Arg778 Leu) at exon 8, was the most common mutation with an allelic frequency of 18.8%, followed by c.2975C>T (p.Pro992Leu) at exon 13, with an allelic frequency of 13.4%. In the comprehensive study, 233 distinct mutations were identified, including 154 missense mutations, 23 nonsense mutations and 56 frameshifts. Eighty-five variants were identified as novel mutations. The c.2333G>T (p.Arg778 Leu) and c.2975C>T (p.Pro992Leu) were the most common mutations, with allelic frequencies of 28.6% and 13.0%, respectively. Exons 8, 12, 13, 16 and 18 were recognised as hotspot exons. Phenotype-genotype correlation analysis suggested that c.2333G>T (p.Arg778 Leu) was significantly associated with lower levels of serum ceruloplasmin (P = 0.034). c.2975C>T (p.Pro992Leu) was correlated with earlier age of disease onset (P = 0.002). Additionally, we found that the c.3809A>G (p.Asn1270Ser) mutation significantly indicated younger onset age (P = 0.012), and the c.3884C>T (p.Ala1295Val) mutation at exon 18 was significantly associated with hepatic presentation (P = 0.048). Moreover, the patients with mixed presentation displayed the initial WD features at an older onset age than the groups with either liver disease or neurological presentation (P = 0.039, P = 0.015, respectively). No significant difference was observed in the presence of KF rings among the three groups with different clinical manifestations., Conclusion: In this study, we identified three novel mutations in 103 WD patients from the southern part of China, which could enrich the previously established mutational spectrum of the ATP7B gene. Background: Chinese dentists are obliged to provide reliable guidance to patients about tooth brushing. However, attitudes and behaviours of Chinese dental students regarding oral health have been insufficient. Traditionally, dental students were taught how to brush, but not how to evaluate tooth brushing. Here, we applied a three-session-procedure (TSP) based on experiential learning (EL) in a tooth brushing course for Chinese dental students. The aim was to improve dental students' knowledge, practice of tooth brushing and self-evaluation, which may help cultivate their ability to conduct evaluation for friends, relatives and future patients., Methods: A quasi-experimental study design with a pre-test and post-test group was applied. A total of 176 students were enrolled in the TSP, which included a 1.5-h lecture course, a 3-h practice course for evaluation and comparison of manual and electric tooth brushing, and an after-class experience report. A survey including a knowledge test and a questionnaire on tooth brushing habits and opinions about the TSP was conducted 2 weeks later. The data about tooth brushing and the survey were collected and analysed., Results: Manual and electric tooth brush demonstrated almost equal overall efficiency in reducing plaque. However, for some students, either manual or electric tooth brushing was more suitable. Thus, it is advisable to estimate the exact differences in the efficiency of tooth brushing methods for each individual. The survey showed that tooth brushing by dental students significantly improved after TSP. The students could make self-evaluation and proper recommendations to family members and friends. The TSP was helpful in interpreting and evaluating manual and electric tooth brushing methods., Conclusions: A TSP course improved dental students' knowledge, practice of tooth brushing and self-evaluation. In conclusion, a TSP based on EL is an effective and well-organized method of education on tooth brushing for Chinese dental students.

Hepatitis B virus related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) is one of the most deadly diseases. Many models have been proposed to evaluate the prognosis of it. However, these models are still controversial. In this study, we aimed to incorporate some characters into model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) to establish a new reliable and feasible model for the prognosis of HBV-ACLF.A total of 530 HBV-ACLF patients who had received antiviral therapy were enrolled into a retrospective study and divided into the training cohort (300) and validation cohort (230). Logistic regression analysis was used to establish a model to predict the 3-month mortality from the patients in the training cohort, and then, the new model was evaluated in the validation cohort.Except for MELD score, 4 other independent factors, namely degree of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), white blood cell (WBC) count, and age, were important for the new model called HBV-ACLF MELD (HAM) model: R = 0.174 × MELD + 1.106 × HE - (0.003 × AFP) + (0.237 × WBC) + (0.103 × Age) - 11.388. The areas under receiver-operating characteristic curve of HAM in the training and validation cohort were 0.894 and 0.868, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of other 7 models. With the best cut-off value of -1.191, HAM achieved higher sensitivity and negative predictive value.We developed a new model that has a great prognostic value of the 3-month mortality of patients with HBV-ACLF.
