Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is prevalent in water and can be translocated into soil-crop ecosystem via irrigation, overflow (pollution accident), and cyanobacterial manure applications, threatening agricultural production and human health. However, the effects of various input pathways on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of MCs in terrestrial plants have been hardly reported so far. In the present study, pot experiments were performed to compare the bioaccumulation, toxicity, and health risk of MC-LR as well as its degradation in soils among various treatments with the same total amount of added MC-LR (150 μg/kg). The treatments included irrigation with polluted water (IPW), cultivation with polluted soil (CPS), and application of cyanobacterial manure (ACM). Three common leaf-vegetables in southern China were used in the pot experiments, including Ipomoea batatas L., Brassica juncea L., and Brassica alboglabra L. All leaf vegetables could bioaccumulate MC-LR under the three treatments, with much higher MC-LR bioaccumulation, especially root bioconcentration observed in ACM treatment than IPW and CPS treatments. An opposite trend in MC-LR degradation in soils of these treatments indicated that ACM could limit MC-LR degradation in soils and thus promote its bioaccumulation in the vegetables. MC-LR bioaccumulation could cause toxicity to the vegetables, with the highest toxic effects observed in ACM treatment. Similarly, bioaccumulation of MC-LR in the edible parts of the leaf-vegetables posed 1.1~4.8 fold higher human health risks in ACM treatment than in IPW and CPS treatments. Mischief Reef, the largest atoll of Nansha Islands, China, is an important sea passage for heavy tonnage ships and an excellent base for marine fisheries. No pollution survey of this reef has been previously conducted. The results indicated that total concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the investigated 44 marine organisms (37 fishes and 7 invertebrates) ranged from 12.8 to 81.3 ng/g wet weight (ww). A significant positive correlation was observed between lipid content and the PAH concentrations based on ww only in the fish inside the reef. The low molecular weight PAHs accounted for the largest proportion (88%). The principal component analysis suggested four main sources of PAHs: combustion of fossil fuels (37%), oil spills and diesel-powered cargo ship emissions (14%), traffic-related exhaust (13%) and coal combustion (11%). Seafood from Mischief Reef is safe for human consumption. • This was the first study of PAHs in marine organisms collected from Mischief Reef. • PAH concentrations in marine species were at global low to moderate levels. • Enclosed water body was suitable to study the bioaccumulation of pollutants. • The main source of PAHs in Mischief Reef was petrogenic. • Seafood from Mischief Reef was safe for human consumption. Abstract: Contamination of organophosphate and carbamate (OP/C) insecticides in vegetables is a serious problem in China. An increasing number of acute poisoning accidents caused by OP/C residues in vegetables have brought great concerns on food safety. Four OP/C commercial enzymatic assay kits were compared on their sensitivity (half maximum inhibition concentration, IC50), matrix interference (i.e., background noise), accuracy (i.e., recovery) and precision (i.e., standard deviations), assay stability, simplicity of analysis, and cost. This work is not to advocate one company''s products over others. Research intention is only to provide some useful information to potential users such as various characteristics on their performance and their particular applications of the four kits. The results showed that the four kit tests have various advantages. In general, kit 1 exhibited better precision, while kit 4 had better sensitivity. Kit 1 exhibited better recovery data for the organophosphates and kit 4 had better recoveries for the carbamates than the other kits. Kit 1, kit 3 and kit 4 were more stable than kit 2 under the same temperature condition. In addition, the operation of kit 4 was the easiest. According to the performance comparison results and the cost-effective factor, kit 1 and kit 4 were more suitable for the local market. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In order to recognize organic contaminants responsible for ecological stresses from intensive shipping traffic and dockyard works, this study aimed at characterizing the sediment contamination of a large industrialized port located in Hainan Island, China. Surface sediment samples were collected from 17 stations including the main docks, the dockyards and the major industrial wastewater outlets. Organotin compounds, the pesticide DDT (bis(chlorophenyl)trichloroethane) and its metabolites and polycyclic aromatic compounds were identified as main pollutant groups by GC/MS applying a non-target screening approach. The pesticide DDT and its metabolites were found in the same samples as the organotin derivatives pointing to similar emission sources. The concurrent presence of these compounds in the dockyard samples suggests a combined usage of organotin compounds and DDT as active ingredients in antifouling paints in Yangpu. As highly specific molecular indicators for dockyard activities, butyltin and phenyltin compounds were identified. Noteworthy, also tributylmethyltin and triphenylmethyltin were detected, likely resulting from microbial assisted biomethylation of synthetic organotin compounds in the sediments. The concentrations of PAHs, DDX and TBT in sediments from dockyards exceeded global sediment quality guidelines and the toxicity thresholds, and potentially have adverse biological effects on marine organisms. • Intensive shipping traffic and dockyard works discharge pollution in China. • Butyltin and phenyltin derivatives are highly specific molecular indicators. • DDX and PAHs are indicators of minor significance. • A clear impact on benthic ecosystems is evident. Frequent cyanobacterial blooms in the eutrophic waters produce a variety of toxins such as the monocyclic heptapeptide microcystins, greatly harming aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, little information of microcystins in agricultural fields is known. This field study of three common microcystin variants (MC-LR, MC-RR, and MC-YR) in vegetables (n = 161), soils (n = 161) and irrigation water samples (n = 23) collected from southern China regions affected by cyanobacteria blooms, shows their prevalence with total concentrations up to 514 μg/L water, 187 μg/kg soil (dry weight) and 382 μg/kg vegetable (fresh weight). MC-RR was the primary variant in all types of samples, accounting for 51.3–100% of total microcystin concentrations. Significant concentration-dependent correlations (p < 0.05) demonstrated that microcystin-contained irrigation waters were the major source of microcystin accumulation in both vegetables and soils. Meanwhile, intracellular-microcystins in irrigation water was found to play an important role in microcystins bioaccumulation in vegetables for the first time. Most vegetable samples (≥60%), particularly celery posed moderate or high human health risk via diet based on toxicity equivalents of the microcystins and reference dose for MC-LR (0.04 μg/kg/d), showing high food safety hidden dangers. Soil microcystins, especially MC-RR in 46.4–88.3% of soils could pose high ecological risks. This study highlights the potential high ecological and human health risks of microcystins in the real soil-vegetable systems of areas affected by cyanobacteria blooms, implying the profound significance and urgent need of investigation on microcystins in terrestrial ecosystems. Pesticides protect crops against pests, and green pesticides are referred to as effective, safe, and eco-friendly pesticides that are sustainably synthesized and manufactured (i.e., green chemistry production). Owing to their high efficacy, safety, and ecological compatibility, green pesticides have become a main direction of global pesticide research and development (R&D). Green pesticides attract attention because of their close association with the quality and safety of agricultural produce. In this review, we briefly define green pesticides and outline their significance, current registration, commercialization, and applications in China, the European Union, and the United States. Subsequently, we engage in an in-depth analysis of the impact of newly launched green pesticides on the environment and ecosystems. Finally, we focus on the potential risks of dietary exposure to green pesticides and the possible hazards of chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity. The status of and perspective on green pesticides can hopefully inspire green pesticide R&D and applications to ensure agricultural production and safeguard human and ecological health.

Uptake pathway and accumulation variation of soil and airborne phthalates (PAEs) in plastic greenhouses by vegetables remains unclear. Here, pot experiments of Chinese flowering cabbage were designed to distinguish root or leaf uptake pathways of PAEs, and investigate the mitigation of spraying PAE-degrading strain in PAE accumulation by vegetables. The results showed that leaves of Chinese flowering cabbage grown in plastic greenhouses absorbed more PAEs from air than those of outside greenhouses. Airborne PAEs were mainly stored in leaf surfaces of vegetables grown inside greenhouse, while PAEs absorbed by roots from soil were translocated and mainly stored in mesophyll, especially in cell walls and organelles. PAE concentrations in mesophyll elevated with increasing soil PAE levels, whereas those in leaf surfaces were not influenced by soil PAE levels. The values of bioconcentration factors for leaves inside greenhouses were significantly (1.39-3.47 fold) higher than those outside. PAE-degrading strain (Rhodococcus pyridinivorans XB) sprayed on leaf surfaces could grow well and Rhodococcus was the dominant genus as confirmed by Illumina high-throughput sequencing. PAE-degrading strain effectively reduced PAEs by 12.9%-34.9% in leaf surface, but not those in vegetables grown in high-PAE soil. Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are a complex group of chlorinated organic pollutants that have raised an increasing public attention. However, limited information is currently available on the bioaccumulation of SCCPs in terrestrial birds which are abundant and widely distributed around the world. In the present study, chicken (Gallus domesticus) was used as a model organism to provide significant implications for other avian species. We investigated the transfer of SCCPs from dietary sources (feed and topsoil) to chicken and their tissue distribution behavior. SCCPs were detected in chicken feed (54-170 ng/g, dry weight), topsoil (170-860 ng/g, dry weight), and adult chicken tissues (460-13000 ng/g, lipid weight). Adult chicken tended to accumulate SCCP congeners with lower n-octanol-water partition coefficients (K OW ) and octanol-air partition coefficients (K OA ). The accumulation ratio values for SCCPs of the chicken were more influenced by K OA than by K OW , which was contrary to those for aquatic fish. Levels and homologue profiles of SCCPs varied among chicken tissues. SCCP levels in the livers were significantly lower than those in the other tissues (p < 0.05). Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination has become a major concern over the effects on human health. In the present study, we collected widely consumed green mussels (Perna viridis) samples from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution, congener profiles as well as potential risk of 18 PBDEs. All the target PBDEs were detected in green mussel samples, indicating their ubiquitous distribution. The concentrations of the total 18 PBDE S (ΣPBDEs) in all samples varied from 6.96 to 55.6 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with BDE-47 and BDE-209 being the predominant PBDE congeners. Overall, the ΣPBDEs pollution in green mussels from NSCS was at a moderate to high level in comparison with the PBDEs pollution worldwide. The dietary exposure of the local population in South China to PBDEs via consuming green mussels was estimated to be 0.30-0.80 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day. Intensive human activities aggravate environmental pollution, particularly in the coastal environment. Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the sediments and marine species from Zhanjiang Harbor, a large harbor in China. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 151 to 453 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediments and from 86.7 to 256 ng/g wet weight (ww) in organism tissues. High levels of PAHs occurred in the sample sites next to the estuary. A decrease in PAH levels was observed in comparison to the previous survey prior to 2012. Fish exhibited lower lipid weight normalized PAH concentrations than the other species, which may be related to their efficient metabolic transformation. Three ring PAHs dominated both in marine sediments and species, but low molecular weight PAHs exhibited higher proportions in biota than in sediments (p < 0.05). Petrogenic and pyrolytic sources both contributed to the occurrence of PAHs, and the latter became increasingly important in the study area. The ecological risk from PAHs in the sediments was relatively low (9% incidence of adverse biological effect) according to the effects-based sediment quality guideline values. Exposure to PAHs via consuming seafoods might pose a health risk to local residents. Concentrations and risk assessment of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were investigated in 106 samples of surface sediments from the East Lake, China in this study. The mean concentration of Zn was highest among the eight heavy metals (225 mg kg(-1)), followed by As (191 mg kg(-1)), Cr (145 mg kg(-1)), Cu (55 mg kg(-1)), Ni (27.1 mg kg(-1)), Pb (7.93 mg kg(-1)), Cd (0.94 mg kg(-1)) and Hg (0.21 mg kg(-1)). Niuchao Hu was less polluted by heavy metals compare to the other four lakelets of the East Lake. The correlations among these heavy metals and the results of principal component analysis indicated that the distribution of Cd, Pb and Hg was related to anthropogenic activities, whereas Cu, As and Cr were affected by the parent rocks. Zinc and Ni were influenced both by anthropogenic activities and parent rocks. Based on the Sediment Quality Guidelines, the results of toxicity assessment indicated that adverse effects caused by Cr and As would be expected frequently. Nickel, Zn, Cd and Hg may cause adverse effects occasionally and Cu and Pb may cause toxicity infrequently. Arsenic was found to have the highest acute toxicity by toxic units (TUs), followed by Cr, Ni, Zn, Hg, Cu, Cd and Pb. The potential ecological risk index analysis indicated that As, Cd and Hg had considerable or high ecological risk, whereas Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb had low ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index (RI) of the heavy metals in the surface sediments of East Lake was 483, indicating considerable ecological risk. Close attention should be paid to pollution of the heavy metals in East Lake, China.
