COVID-19 has transformed higher education learning and teaching practices globally. Tertiary students, internationally face both opportunities and challenges in learning and adapting to this paradigm shift in the delivery of education. It remains unclear how students in international contexts are responding to these changes in digital learning during and post-COVID-19. This paper aims to compare student perceptions of digital competence, confidence, and resilience in present times using data from surveys of tertiary students from Australia, Cambodia, China, India, and Malaysia. There are disparities not only in the teaching and learning pedagogies amongst these countries but also in the levels of technological advancement, infrastructure support, and pace of digital innovation in the delivery of courses. These differences have put in focus students' both digital competencies and resilience as they pursue higher education on various digital learning platforms. Resilience includes the ability to bounce back or adapt from stress (Smith et al., 2008). Digital resilience is students' tech-savviness and preparedness to adapt to different digital environments as they pursue higher education. This paper examines the perceptions of tertiary undergraduate students from these countries in this emerging new digital learning norm. A total of 687 tertiary students from the aforementioned countries participated in a survey to questions related to digital competence, confidence in using and/or adapting to digital innovation, and resilience. Statistically significant attributes are identified to help better understand the challenges these culturally diverse students perceive in digital learning environments. This study will reveal barriers that impact the digital transformation of undergraduate students which can be used to recommend necessary teaching and learning support frameworks to enhance their digital competence and resilience. This will help tertiary institutions better equip all stakeholders in adapting to the new normal of higher education in the future.

The outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide in 2020 has posed tremendous challenges to higher education globally. Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is among the many areas affected by the pandemic. The unexpected transition to online teaching has increased challenges for improving and/or retaining students' language proficiency. WeChat, a popular social application in China, was widely used for TEFL at Chinese universities before COVID-19. However, it remains unclear whether the use of WeChat can facilitate Chinese university students' English-language lexical proficiency during the pandemic. To fill this gap, the aim of the present study was two-fold: (1) it initially explored the relationship between the variables including students' academic years, genders, and academic faculties/disciplines, and their lexical proficiency; and (2) it evaluated the effectiveness of a WeChat-assisted lexical learning (WALL) program in facilitating learning outcomes of English-language vocabulary. One hundred and thirty-three students at a university in Northern China participated in the WALL program for three weeks. As the results indicated, the independent variables had no correlation with the students' lexical proficiency. More importantly, the students had a decline in the test scores after using the program, compared to their initial test scores. Moreover, the difference was reported to be medium. The findings further proposed questions on applying WeChat to vocabulary teaching in a large-scaled transition. The study is expected to provide insights for tertiary institutions, language practitioners, and student stakeholders to troubleshoot the potential problems regarding implementing WeChat-based TEFL pedagogies.

Recent years have witnessed numerous systematic investigations on mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). However, very few research synthesis studies focused on the higher education context in mainland China. This paper provides a systematic review of the findings of 23 studies published between 2015 and 2020 in mainland China. The aim of this review is twofold: 1) to examine prevalent researched elements in extant MALL studies; and 2) to investigate ways in which the two original components of the Situated Learning Theory (SLT), including Legitimate Peripheral Participation and Communities of Practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991), have a bearing on MALL. This systematic review resulted in two major findings. First, five key researched elements were revealed, e.g., target language teaching areas, and adopted applications/software. Second, guided by the two original elements of SLT, four derived elements were identified, namely authenticity, social interactions and collaborations, apprenticeship learning, and beliefs and behaviours. The findings suggest the need to develop sound MALL pedagogies associated with sociocultural aspects of language learning in relevant contexts. This review study also provides insights into how Chinese language professionals and practitioners can improve curriculum design and resource development to adapt to future trends in MALL.

This paper documents the structure and operations of student governments in contemporary Chinese higher education and their effect on college students' political trust and party membership. We first investigate the structure and power distribution within student governments in Chinese universities, specifically focusing on the autonomy of student governments and the degree to which they represent students. Second, using a large sample of college students, we examine how participating in student government affects their political trust and party membership. Our results show that student government in Chinese higher education possesses a complex, hierarchical matrix structure with two main parallel systems--the student union and the Chinese Communist Party system. We found that power distribution within student governments is rather uneven, and student organisations that are affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party have an unequal share of power. In addition, we found that students' cadre experience is highly appreciated in student cadre elections, and being a student cadre significantly affects their political trust and party membership during college.

This paper examines the intergenerational effects of maternal education on adolescents' development in education and health by using data from the China Education Panel Survey. The ordinary least squares and two-stage least squares estimates indicate that maternal education increases both children's cognitive test scores and the probability of being nearsighted and overweight. The net effects of maternal education on the economic well-being of adolescents is inconclusive. We further find that family environment and parenting style are the most relevant mediating mechanisms through which maternal education affects the development of adolescents.

Background: The CRC‐VTE trial conducted in China revealed a significant occurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients following colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery, raising concerns about implementing thromboprophylaxis measures. The present study aimed to identify and analyze inappropriate aspects of current thromboprophylaxis practices. Methods: This study performed an analysis of the CRC‐VTE trial, a prospective multicenter study that enrolled 1836 patients who underwent CRC surgery. The primary objective was to identify independent risk factors for VTE after CRC surgery using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, among the cases in which VTE occurred, the appropriateness of thromboprophylaxis was assessed based on several factors, including pharmacologic prophylaxis, time to initiate prophylaxis, drug selection, drug dosage, and duration of pharmacologic prophylaxis. Based on the analysis of the current state of thromboprophylaxis and relevant clinical guidelines, a modified Delphi method was used to develop a clinical pathway for VTE prophylaxis after CRC surgery. Results: In this analysis of 1836 patients, 205 (11.2%) were diagnosed with VTE during follow‐up. The multifactorial analysis identified several independent risk factors for VTE, including age (≥70 years), female sex, varicose veins in the lower extremities, intraoperative blood transfusion, and the duration of immobilization exceeding 24 h. None of the patients diagnosed with VTE in the CRC trial received adequate thromboprophylaxis. The main reasons for this inappropriate practice were the omission of thromboprophylaxis, delayed initiation, and insufficient duration of thromboprophylaxis. We developed a specialized clinical pathway for thromboprophylaxis after CRC surgery to address these issues. Conclusions: This study offers a comprehensive nationwide evaluation of existing thromboprophylaxis practices in patients after CRC surgery in China. A specialized clinical pathway was developed to address the identified gaps and improve the quality of care. Background: The surge in omicron variants has caused nationwide breakthrough infections in mainland China since the December 2022. In this study, we report the neutralization profiles of serum samples from the patients with breast cancer and the patients with liver cancer who had contracted subvariant breakthrough infections. Methods: In this real‐world study, we enrolled 143 COVID‐19‐vaccinated (81 and 62 patients with breast and liver cancers) and 105 unvaccinated patients with cancer (58 and 47 patients with breast and liver cancers) after omicron infection. Anti‐spike receptor binding domain (RBD) IgGs and 50% pseudovirus neutralization titer (pVNT50) for the preceding (wild type), circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7), and new subvariants (XBB.1.5) were comprehensively analyzed. Results: Patients with liver cancer receiving booster doses had higher levels of anti‐spike RBD IgG against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) and a novel subvariant (XBB.1.5) compared to patients with breast cancer after breakthrough infection. Additionally, all vaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody titers against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) compared to unvaccinated patients. However, the unvaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 than vaccinated patients after Omicron infection, with this trend being more pronounced in breast cancer than in liver cancer patients. Moreover, we found that there was no correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG against wildtype virus and the neutralizing antibody titer, but a positive correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG and the neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 was found in unvaccinated patients. Conclusion: Our study found that there may be differences in vaccine response and protective effect against COVID‐19 infection in patients with liver and breast cancer. In the context of large-scale wind power access to the power system, it is urgent to explore new probabilistic supply–demand analysis methods. This paper proposes a wind power stochastic and extreme scenario generation method considering wind power–temperature correlations and carries out probabilistic supply–demand balance analysis based on it. Firstly, the influence of temperature on wind power output is analyzed via Pearson coefficient to obtain the correlation between wind power and temperature. Secondly, based on the historical wind power curve, a large number of wind power output scenarios are randomly generated while fully preserving its characteristics, and probabilistic supply–demand analysis is carried out. Thirdly, for the extreme case of continuous multi-day extreme heat without wind, extreme scenarios are selected from the generated scenarios for supply–demand balance analysis. Finally, a practical example in a province in central-eastern China is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicate that the scenario generation method can effectively capture the historical wind power characteristics and can be better applied to the diversified supply and demand balance analysis to obtain more accurate analysis results. Fisheries and bottom seawater data were collected in July in 2022 and 2023 from 15 sampling stations in the Huanghe River estuary and adjacent seas in China. The patterns of functional alpha and beta diversity of fish communities in this area and their relationships with environmental factors were studied using trait-based analysis. Five functional classifications, which included 16 functional traits, four functional alpha diversity indices (functional richness, functional evenness, functional divergence, and community-weighted mean), three functional beta diversity indices (functional beta diversity and its turnover and nestedness components), and 14 bottom environmental factors were considered. The dominant traits of fish communities were the following: benthivorous feeding habits, small and front-facing mouths, high trophic level, demersal, anguilliform, low growth coefficient, medium resilience, low vulnerability, and adapted to warm temperate conditions. The dominant migration traits and types of fish eggs varied by year, and fish abundance was the main factor affecting the dominant traits of the communities. The results of multiple regression on distance matrices and variance partitioning analysis indicated that ammonia nitrogen content, total phosphorus content, and pH were the main environmental factors that affected fish functional diversity. The N/P ratio had a bottom-up control effect on fish functional diversity. Our findings also revealed that high pH gradients and distant geographical distances can inhibit trait turnover in fish communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) are most common in anti-aquaporin 4 (AQP4) antibody positive NMOSDs, which are characterized by recurrent episodes of optic neuritis and myelitis, etc., and severely reduce the quality of life. In recent years, new insights into the diagnostic techniques, diagonstic markers, and immunotherapy of anti-AQP4 antibody positive NMOSDs have continued to emerge, and here we focus on synthesizing new advances in the diagnostic techniques and diagonstic markers of anti-AQP4 antibody positive NMOSDs and the most recent recommendations for its treatment, in hopes of summarizing to promote the understanding and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for anti-AQP4 antibody positive NMOSDs in China, and to explore more possible clinical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an emerging systemic inflammation marker associated with disease progression and mortality in patients. However, there is limited research on the predictive value of NLR in the general population. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between NLR and all-cause mortality in an elderly Chinese population. A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on health examination in a community in Shanghai, China, between 2015 and 2020. Among 6364 participants (aged ≥ 55 years), a total of 169 (2.66%) participants died during a median follow-up period of 5.37 years. The median NLR was 1.63. Multivariate analysis revealed that the upper 2 quartiles of NLR were positively associated with all-cause mortality (Q3 vs Q1: hazard ratio [HR] = 1.82; Q4 vs Q1: HR = 2.22). The stratified and interaction analyses showed that age, sex, body mass index (BMI), history of diabetes, or history of hypertension did not significantly modify the association between NLR and all-cause mortality. Emerging pathogenic tick‐borne viruses (TBVs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their significant impact on human and animal health. A novel orthonairovirus named Dadong virus (DDV) was isolated from Haemaphysalis concinna ticks in the Changbai Mountain region on the China–North Korea border. DDV can induce cytopathic effects in mammalian and human cell lines. Phylogenetic analysis showed that it belongs to the genus Orthonairovirus, family Nairoviridae, exhibiting 72.4%–81.3% nucleic acid identity to Tofla orthonairovirus, known to cause lethal infection in IFNAR KO mice. The first serological evidence of DDV circulating in cattle and mice was also obtained, with 4.0% (1/25) of cattle and 2.27% (1/44) of mice seropositive for DDV. Summary: Background: The relationship between sugar‐free beverage (SFB) intake and childhood obesity among Chinese children is unknown. Objectives: To describe the status of SFB consumption among children and adolescents in China and assess the association between SFB intake and different types of obesity. Methods: The study was based on the baseline data of an ongoing cohort project named Evaluation and Monitoring on School‐based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen (EMSNGS). Food frequency questionnaires were used to collect information on SFB consumption in 3227 students aged 9–17. Physical and clinical examinations were conducted by trained investigators and clinicians. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were performed to assess the association between SFB intake and general obesity, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW)/metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Results: The median age of the participants was 13.28 years. Among the participants, 55.2% were boys, and 66.1% were adolescents. The median SFB consumption was 16.67 mL/d. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, each 100 mL increase in daily SFB intake was associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.14; 95%CI: 1.06–1.23), abdominal obesity (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.03–1.23), and MUOW/MUO (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.02–1.21), respectively. Stratified analyses showed that family income may have an impact on the association between SFB intake and overweight/obesity (P for interaction = 0.021) and abdominal obesity (P for interaction = 0.031). Conclusion: SFB intake was positively associated with childhood obesity in Chinese children, particularly among individuals with high‐income families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this paper is to describe and analyze the relationship between ability tracking and student social trust, in the context of low-income students in developing countries. Drawing on the results from a longitudinal study among 1,436 low-income students across 132 schools in rural China, we found a significant lack of interpersonal trust and confidence in public institutions among poor rural young adults. We also found that slow-tracked students have a significantly lower level of social trust, comprised of interpersonal trust and confidence in public institutions, relative to their fast-tracked peers. This disparity might further widen the gap between relatively privileged students who stay in school and less privileged students who drop out of school. These results suggest that making high school accessible to more students may improve social trust among rural low-income young adults.

This article reports the findings of a small-scale, follow-up investigation into the transfer problems encountered by first-year teachers in China, and the interactions that emerged among the teachers' preconceptions of teaching, university teacher preparation programmes and teaching school contexts in their first year. Participants were surveyed both pre-graduation, after finishing their teaching practice in Year 4 of their B.Ed. programme and after their first year of teaching, when the transfer problem was newly emerged. This study finds that first-year teachers were not challenged solely by transfer problems emerging from differences among their preconceptions of teaching, university teacher preparation programmes and teaching school contexts, but also by the lack of learning support they had when teaching in the wider, radical changing social context. This study gives voice to the perceived learning needs and related supports of first-year teachers in China.

BACKGROUND Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index values are a new surrogate marker for insulin resistance. This study aimed to explore the relationship between cumulative TyG index values and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). METHODS A total of 576 patients with AF who underwent RFCA at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were included in this study. The participants were grouped based on cumulative TyG index values tertiles within 3 months after ablation. Cox regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to determine the relationship between cumulative TyG index values and AF recurrence. The predictive value of all risk factors was assessed by receiver operating curve analysis. RESULTS There were 375 patients completed the study (age: 63.23 ± 10.73 years, 64.27% male). The risk of AF recurrence increased with increasing cumulative TyG index values tertiles. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients in the medium cumulative TyG index group [hazard ratio (HR) = 4.949, 95% CI: 1.778-13.778, P = 0.002] and the high cumulative TyG index group (HR = 8.716, 95% CI: 3.371-22.536, P < 0.001) had a higher risk of AF recurrence than those in the low cumulative TyG index group. The restricted cubic spline regression model also showed an increased risk of AF recurrence with increasing cumulative TyG index values. When considering cumulative TyG index values, left atrial diameter, and lactate dehydrogenase levels as a comprehensive factor, the model could effectively predict AF recurrence after RFCA [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.847, 95% CI: 0.797-0.897, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Cumulative TyG index values were a risk factor for AF recurrence after RFCA. Monitoring longitudinal TyG index values may assist with optimized for risk stratification and outcome prediction for AF recurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Smart farming technologies (SFTs) can increase yields and reduce the environmental impacts of farming by improving the efficient use of inputs. This paper is to estimate farmers' preference and willingness to pay (WTP) for a well-defined SFT, smart drip irrigation (SDI) technology. Design/methodology/approach: This study conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) among 1,300 maize farmers in North China to understand their WTP for various functions of SDI using mixed logit (MIXL) models. Findings: The results show that farmers have a strong preference for SDI in general and its specific functions of smart sensing and smart control. However, farmers do not have a preference for the function of region-level agronomic planning. Farmers' preferences for different functions of SDI are heterogeneous. Their preference was significantly associated with their education, experience of being village cadres and using computers, household income and holding of land and machines. Further analysis show that farmers' WTP for functions facilitated by hardware is close to the estimated prices, whereas their WTP for functions wholly or partially facilitated by software is substantially lower than the estimated prices. Practical implications: Findings from the empirical study lead to policy implications for enhancing the design of SFTs by integrating software and hardware and optimizing agricultural extension strategies for SFTs with digital techniques such as videos. Wuxiang virus (WUXV) is the first sandfly-borne Phlebovirus isolated from Phlebotomus chinensis collected in China and has been established as a consistent viral presence in the local sandfly populations of both Wuxiang County and Yangquan City. However, its distribution in the Shanxi Province remains unclear. In this study, three novel WUXV strains were isolated from sandflies collected from Jiexiu City, Shanxi Province, China, in 2022. Subsequently, whole-genome sequences of these novel strains were generated using next-generation sequencing. The open reading frame (ORF) sequences of the WUXV strains from the three locations were subjected to gene analysis. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that WUXV belongs to two distinct clades with geographical differences. Strains from Wuxiang County and Yangquan City belonged to clade 1, whereas strains from Jiexiu City belonged to clade 2. Reassortment and recombination analyses indicated no gene reassortment or recombination between the two clades. However, four reassortments or recombination events could be detected in clade 1 strains. By aligning the amino acid sequences, eighty-seven mutation sites were identified between the two clades, with seventeen, sixty, nine, and one site(s) in the proteins RdRp, M, NSs, and N, respectively. Additionally, selection pressure analysis identified 17 positively selected sites across the entire genome of WUXV, with two, thirteen, one, and one site(s) in the proteins RdRp, M, NSs, and N, respectively. Notably, sites M-312 and M-340 in the M segment not only represented mutation sites but also showed positive selective pressure effects. In recent years, numerous viruses have been identified from ticks, and some have been linked to clinical cases of emerging tick-borne diseases. Chinese northeast frontier is tick infested. However, there is a notable lack of systematic monitoring efforts to assess the viral composition in the area, leaving the ecological landscape of viruses carried by ticks not clear enough. Between April and June 2017, 7101 ticks were collected to perform virus surveillance on the China–North Korea border, specifically in Tonghua, Baishan, and Yanbian. A total of 2127 Ixodes persulcatus were identified. Further investigation revealed the diversity of tick-borne viruses by transcriptome sequencing of Ixodes persulcatus. All ticks tested negative for tick-borne encephalitis virus. Transcriptome sequencing expanded 121 genomic sequence data of 12 different virus species from Ixodes persulcatus. Notably, a new segmented flavivirus, named Baishan Forest Tick Virus, were identified, closely related to Alongshan virus and Harz mountain virus. Therefore, this new virus may pose a potential threat to humans. Furthermore, the study revealed the existence of seven emerging tick-borne viruses dating back to 2017. These previously identified viruses included Mudanjiang phlebovirus, Onega tick phlebovirus, Sara tick phlebovirus, Yichun mivirus, and three unnamed viruses (one belonging to the Peribunyaviridae family and the other two belonging to the Phenuiviridae family). The existence of these emerging tick-borne viruses in tick samples collected in 2017 suggests that their history may extend further than previously recognized. This study provides invaluable insights into the virome of Ixodes persulcatus in the China–North Korea border region, enhancing our ongoing efforts to manage the risks associated with tick-borne viruses. Agricultural technology adoption is an important way to improve agricultural technology and production efficiency and promote agricultural modernization. However, the low willingness to adopt agricultural technologies has been a challenge in China. Cognitive load may affect smallholder farmers' decision to adopt new technologies. Using an experimental economics approach, we examine the effect of cognitive load on smallholder farmers' willingness to adopt technology from a cognitive perspective based on a field experiment with 440 smallholder farmers in Shaanxi Province, China, in 2021 and 2022. The experimental results show that cognitive load has a significant negative effect on farmers' willingness to adopt technology, and the higher the level of cognitive load, the lower the farmers' willingness to adopt the technology. From the mechanism of action, cognitive load influences smallholder farmers' technology adoption intention by consuming their attention. In addition, cognitive ability, technology training, and government subsidies had heterogeneous effects on cognitive load affecting farmers' willingness to adopt new technologies, i.e., the cognitive load had less inhibitory effects on technology adoption willingness of smallholder farmers who has the high cognitive ability, participated in technology training and received government subsidies. Therefore, in the context of rural revitalization, the Chinese government should pay attention to the influence of farmers' cognitive mechanism on their willingness to adopt agricultural technologies, improve their cognitive ability, provide more technical training guidance, and provide targeted subsidies, to guide farmers to actively adopt new technologies and get rid of the "poverty trap". Iodine is an essential nutrient that may change the occurrence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Apoptosis and DNA methylation participate in the pathogenesis and destructive mechanism of AIT. We detected the methylation and the expression of mRNA of intrinsic apoptosis-associated genes (YWHAG , ING4 , BRSK2 and GJA1) to identify the potential interactions between the levels of methylation in these genes and different levels of iodine. 176 adult patients with AIT in Shandong Province, China, were included. The MethylTargetTM assay was used to verify the levels of methylation. We used PCR to detect the mRNA levels of the candidate genes. Interactions between methylation levels of the candidate genes and iodine levels were evaluated with multiplicative and addictive interaction models and GMDR. In the AIT group, YWHAG_1 and six CpG sites and BRSK2_1 and eight CpG sites were hypermethylated, whereas ING4_1 and one CpG site were hypomethylated. A negative correlation was found between methylation levels of YWHAG and mRNA expression. The combination of iodine fortification, YWHAG_1 hypermethylation and BRSK2_1 hypermethylation was significantly associated with elevated AIT risk. A four-locus model (YWHAG_1 × ING4_1 × BRSK2_1 × iodine level) was found to be the best model of the gene–environment interactions. We identified abnormal changes in the methylation status of YWHAG , ING4 and BRSK2 in patients with AIT in different iodine levels. Aconitum carmichaelii is a herbaceous herb indigenous to China that has been cultivated for traditional medicine for centuries. Virus-like symptoms of A. carmichaelii plants were observed on leaves in some A. carmichaelii plantations in Zhanyi and Wuding Counties, Yunnan Province, southwest China. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) was performed on 28 symptomatic plants, and the results revealed infection with 11 viruses, including 2 novel viruses and 9 previously described viruses: Aconitum amalgavirus 1 (AcoAV-1), aconite virus A (AcVA), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), currant latent virus (CuLV), apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV), tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV), tobacco vein distorting virus (TVDV), and potato leafroll virus (PLRV). Two novel viruses tentatively named Aconitum potyvirus 1 and Aconitum betapartitivirus 1, were supported by sequence and phylogenetic analysis results of their genomes. We proposed the names Potyvirus aconiti and Betapartitivirus aconiti. RT-PCR assays of 142 plants revealed the predominance and widespread distribution of CMV, AcVA, and AcoPV-1 in plantations. A carbon market is a widely used policy tool worldwide. This study employs a difference-in-differences (DID) model to estimate the impact of a carbon trading policy on green technology innovation and applies a spatial DID (SDID) model to investigate its spatial spillover effects. The findings suggest that China's carbon market effectively promotes green technology innovation, as green invention patent applications for listed enterprises increase by 28.8% when implementing the carbon trading policy. Moreover, implementing a carbon trading policy promotes local green technology innovation and has spatial spillover effects on neighboring cities. Furthermore, heterogeneity test results show that the spatial spillover effects differ by geographical region, economic development levels, ownership type (state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises), and degree of government intervention. Therefore, we suggest enhancing enterprises' technological innovation by providing policy support and prioritizing the development of carbon markets in regions with high economic development levels. Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, the relationship between Lp(a) and insulin resistance (IR) remains controversial. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between Lp(a) concentrations and IR in Chinese adults. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 1908 cases and 5725 controls was performed for identifying the association of Lp(a) with IR. IR was assessed using the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, and patients with a TyG index greater than the third quartile were defined as having IR. Results: The distribution of Lp(a) in Chinese adults was skewed, with a median of 7.90mg/dL. Lp(a) concentrations were significantly and progressively lower with increasing TyG index values in Chinese adult males, but not in females. Multiple regression analysis adjusted for a wide range of risk factors showed that Lp(a) concentrations were inversely and independently associated with IR in Chinese adult males, but not in females. The suggested Lp (a) cutoff for discriminating IR from non-IR was 4.7 mg/dL in Chinese adult males. Lp(a) interacts with gender in IR on both additive and multiplicative scale in Chinese adults. China's Paris Agreement Pledge and recent introduction of an Emissions Trading Scheme have created a need for information on where it makes the most economic sense to use different sources of energy. With lower carbon dioxide emissions, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas provide cleaner sources of energy relative to coal. Although it is practically crucial to investigate the use of these two sources, empirical studies are limited due to lack of data. To fill the research gap, this paper studies the efficiency of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas sector in China by using data from 24 major province-level divisions over the years 2006–2015. Efficiency is defined as the utility's ability to produce the highest output given fixed inputs. We find that: (1) GDP per capita and high customer density are associated with higher levels of efficiency and (2) utilities that serve higher proportions of households (as opposed to industry and firms) are associated with lower levels of efficiency. Research intends to identify: features of ideological culture within China's education sector; the most effective theory of ideology, capable of developing the individuals' worldviews and values, revealing their civic-minded self-awareness; the dominant personality traits that can most effectively influence the moulding of civic-minded attitudes and social responsibility among China's residents. This research project included an experiment conducted to determine the effectiveness of various theories of ideology in China's education sector. As the experiment's findings suggest, traditional Confucianism was identified as the most productive ideology (51.2%). The research findings may be used in the study of various ideologies, such as liberalism and neoliberalism, socialism, feminism, communism and social democracy, applicable to existing systems of ideological culture education in the globalization settings (within the context of pedagogical and psychotherapeutic activities, as well as in order to improve methods of teaching general subjects and education levels among students). China is undergoing a rapid agrarian transition from dispersed household farming to large-scale, mechanized, and commercialized agricultural production, while retaining collective rural land ownership. Reforms have encouraged transfers of rural land to new subjects of agriculture including agribusinesses, family farmers, and cooperatives, leading to capitalist dynamics in agriculture both from above and from below. Central-state pressure to scale up and modernize agriculture has led local governments to engage in creative experimentation with new institutional forms. This article investigates one such innovation, which has been widely lauded as an important model: the creation of an "agricultural co-management system" in Chongzhou City, Sichuan province, which combines land shareholding cooperatives (LSCs), the hiring of new professional farm managers for the LSCs, and state-provided agricultural services aimed at modernization. We demonstrate that the Chongzhou government's experimentation arose from political economic incentives to capitalize and modernize agriculture as well as the locally specific circumstances of the failure of a dragonhead enterprise. Examining the three components of the agricultural co-management system in depth, we argue that it has deepened rural differentiation through a process of state-led accumulation, and that the continued scaling up of LSCs in the context of a new modern agricultural functional zone threatens to further erode shareholder control. Sexual reproduction in fungi promotes genetic diversity and helps the fungus to adapt to environmental stresses. Fusarium verticillioides is a heterothallic filamentous ascomycete that is a major cause of maize ear and stalk rot worldwide, while also posing a threat to human and animal health by producing various mycotoxins. Sexual reproduction in F. verticillioides is controlled by the MAT-1 and MAT-2 loci, which mandate that only strains of opposite mating types can mate to yield perithecia and ascospores. Nevertheless, there exists a phenomenon called 'spore killing', in which only four typical ascospores appear in the asci following a cross between a strain carrying the spore killer allele (SkK) and one with the spore killer sensitive allele (SkS). In this study, 31 isolates of F. verticillioides collected from eight provinces in China during the maize growing season from 2014 to 2020 were compared based on their mating type, spore killing genotype, and pathogenicity. To determine the mating types and spore killing genotypes of these isolates, partial sequences were amplified from the MAT loci and the SKC1 gene, respectively. The PCR results showed that out of the 31 isolates, 18 were MAT-1 and 13 were MAT-2, and that 25 had SkK genotypes and 6 had SkS genotypes. Genetic crosses between LNF15-11 (MAT-2) and 18 MAT-1 isolates produced normal perithecia with varying numbers. However, crosses between LNF15-11 and the 3 isolates (SDF18-36, HNF14-8, and GSF19-6) produced only four ascospores per ascus, while the remaining isolates except SDF18-28, yielded eight ascospores per ascus. These findings suggest that the SKC1 amplicon variation can be used to differentiate SkK and SkS genotypes in the field and that the 3 isolates are truly SkS genotypes with the MAT-1 allele. Altogether, this study contributes to our knowledge of the mating type and spore killing genotype of F. verticillioides in China and offers valuable strain resources for investigating heterothallic sexual reproduction. Purpose: Robotic surgery for right-sided colon and rectal cancer has rapidly increased; however, there is limited evidence in the literature of advantages of robotic left colectomy (RLC) for left-sided colon cancer. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of RLC versus laparoscopic left colectomy (LLC) with complete mesocolic excision (CME) for left-sided colon cancer. Methods: Patients who had RLC or LLC with CME for left-sided colon cancer at five hospitals in China between January 2014 and April 2022 were included. A one-to-one propensity score matched analysis was performed to decrease confounding. The primary outcome was postoperative complications occurring within 30 days of surgery. Secondary outcomes were disease-free survival, overall survival and the number of harvested lymph nodes. Results: A total of 292 patients (187 male; median age 61.0 [20.0–85.0] years) were eligible for this study, and propensity score matching yielded 102 patients in each group. The clinicopathological characteristics were well-matched between groups. The two groups did not differ in estimated blood loss, conversion to open rate, time to first flatus, reoperation rate, or postoperative length of hospital stay (p > 0.05). RLC was associated with a longer operation time (192.9 ± 53.2 vs. 168.9 ± 52.8 min, p = 0.001). The incidence of postoperative complications did not differ between the RLC and LLC groups (18.6% vs. 17.6%, p = 0.856). The total number of lymph nodes harvested in the RLC group was higher than that in the LLC group (15.7 ± 8.3 vs. 12.1 ± 5.9, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in 3-year and 5-year overall survival or 3-year and 5-year disease-free survival. Conclusion: Compared to laparoscopic surgery, RLC with CME for left-sided colon cancer was found to be associated with higher numbers of lymph nodes harvested and similar postoperative complications and long-term survival outcomes. Background: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV; Flaviridae: Flavivirus) causes Japanese encephalitis (JE), which is the most important arboviral disease in Asia and the western Pacific. Among the five JEV genotypes (GI–IV), GI has dominated traditional epidemic regions in the past 20 years. We investigated the transmission dynamics of JEV GI through genetic analyses. Methods: We generated 18 JEV GI near full length sequences by using multiple sequencing approaches from mosquitoes collected in natural settings or from viral isolates obtained through cell culture. We performed phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses to reconstruct the evolutionary history by integrating our data with 113 publicly available JEV GI sequences. Results: We identified two subtypes of JEV GI (GIa and GIb), with a rate of 5.94 × 10−4 substitutions per site per year (s/s/y). At present, GIa still circulates within a limited region, exhibited no significant growth, the newest strain was discovered in China (Yunnan) in 2017, whereas most JEV strains circulating belong to the GIb clade. During the past 30 years, two large GIb clades have triggered epidemics in eastern Asia: one epidemic occurred in 1992 [95% highest posterior density (HPD) = 1989–1995] and the causative strain circulates mainly in southern China (Yunnan, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Taiwan) (Clade 1); the other epidemic occurred in 1997 (95% HPD = 1994–1999) and the causative strain has increased in circulation in northern and southern China during the past 5 years (Clade 2). An emerging variant of Clade 2 contains two new amino acid markers (NS2a-151V, NS4-169K) that emerged around 2005; this variant has demonstrated exponential growth in northern China. Conclusion: JEV GI stain circulating in Asia have shifted during the past 30 years, spatiotemporal differences were observed among JEV GI subclade. GIa is still circulating within a limited range, exhibite no significant growth. Two large GIb clades have triggered epidemics in eastern Asia, all JEV sequences identified in northern China during the past 5 years were of the new emerging variant of G1b-clade 2. Background and Objective: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide, especially in China. According to the 2021 Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology guidelines, sorafenib, lenvatinib, atezolizumab combined with bevacizumab, and sintilimab combined with bevacizumab are recommended as first-line treatment options for advanced HCC. This study provides a cost-effectiveness analysis of these treatments from the patient perspective. Methods: A partitioned survival model was established using the TreeAge 2019 software to evaluate the cost-effectiveness. The model includes three states, namely progression-free survival, progressive disease, and death. Clinical data were derived from three randomized controlled studies involving patients with advanced HCC who received the following treatment: sorafenib and lenvatinib (NCT01761266); atezolizumab in combination with bevacizumab (NCT03434379); and sintilimab in combination with bevacizumab (NCT03794440). Cost and clinical preference data were obtained from the literature and interviews with clinicians. Results: All compared with sorafenib therapy, lenvatinib had an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of US$188,625.25 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained; sintilimab plus bevacizumab had an ICER of US$75,150.32 per QALY gained; and atezolizumab plus bevacizumab had an ICER of US$144,513.71 per QALY gained. The probabilistic sensitivity analysis indicated that treatment with sorafenib achieved a 100% probability of cost-effectiveness at a threshold of US$36,600/QALY. One-way sensitivity analysis revealed that the results were most sensitive to the medical insurance reimbursement ratio and drug prices. Conclusions: In this economic evaluation, therapy with lenvatinib, sintilimab plus bevacizumab, and atezolizumab plus bevacizumab generated incremental QALYs compared with sorafenib; however, these regimens were not cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of US$36,600 per QALY. Therefore, some patients may achieve preferred economic outcomes from these three therapies by tailoring the regimen based on individual patient factors. Key points: With the approval of new first-and second-line drugs and the establishment of treatment based on immune checkpoint inhibitors as standard treatment, treatment options for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma are more diverse than ever before. To understand the community structure dynamics of fish eggs and larvae in the Yellow River estuary, four trawl surveys were annually conducted between 2011 and 2014, including at 13 stations in 2011 and 18 stations between 2012 and 2014. A total of 2540 eggs and 143 larvae were collected during the four surveys, comprising 25 species, 8 orders, 16 families, and 20 genera. During the survey period, species numbers of eggs first decreased and then increased, while abundances first increased and then decreased. Larval species numbers exhibited the same trends as for eggs, while larval abundances fluctuated across the four years of the study. The primary species represented by the eggs were Konosirus punctatus, Sillago sihama, and Cynoglossus joyeri, while the larval species primarily comprised Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, and Engraulis japonicus. Cluster analysis of species compositions for eggs and larvae revealed the presence of four groups, wherein groups 1–3 comprised communities from 12, 3, and 2 stations, respectively, that were primarily distributed in the eastern part of the estuary. In contrast, group four only comprised communities from one station at the western part of the estuary near Bohai Bay. All biodiversity indices were lowest in 2012 and biodiversity of fish egg and larval communities were most correlated with the water depth among the parameters that were measured. Overall, interannual variation in the distribution and diversity of fish egg and larval communities in the Yellow River estuary reflected the responses of fish to environmental variability. The outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted conventional educational practice in universities worldwide. Chinese universities are no exception. WeChat, a social application widely used in China, has been considered a viable tool for language education. However, the perspectives of Chinese university students and English language teachers in terms of using WeChat for English vocabulary learning and teaching during the pandemic remain unclear. The aim of the present study was twofold: First, it explored Chinese university students' and language teachers' opinions of adopting a self-developed WeChat-assisted lexical-learning program (the WALL program) during COVID-19. Second, it gathered their evaluations of the WALL program. To achieve the aim, two sets of semi-structured interviews were used to gather qualitative data about five students' and three English language teachers' perceptions at a university in northern China. The results first revealed that the eight participants showed overwhelming opinions in support of adopting the program for vocabulary learning and teaching during the pandemic. In addition, it received mostly positive evaluations. However, the program had two main drawbacks: distracting learning environments and uncertain learning effects. The present study then made recommendations for future WeChat-based language learning and teaching programs. The findings are expected to provide pedagogical insights for tertiary educational institutions, practitioners, and students in the chosen context in order to deal with the future design and implementation of sound MALL-based approaches. Digit ratio, especially 2D:4D, is hypothesised as a potential biological marker of exposure to intrauterine sex hormones. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between 10 SNPs of sex steroid hormone receptor (SSHR) related genes and 2D:4D. 814 college students were randomly selected as research participants. After taking pictures of both hands of the participants, Image Pro Plus (IPP) software was used to measure 2D:4D. ESR1 (rs2228480 and rs3798758), ESR2 (rs944459, rs8006145, rs928554, and rs8018687), GPER1 (rs10269151 and rs12702047), and PGR (rs1042839 and rs500760) were genotyped using multiplex PCR. Females had significantly higher 2D:4D in both hands than male students (p < 0.05), and the R2D:4D of the Han population was significantly higher than that of the Hui population (p < 0.05). The number of females carrying the GPER1 G allele of rs12702047 was significantly higher than that of males (p < 0.05). The L2D:4D in males was significantly different in rs1042839, and the R2D:4D in the Han ethnicity was significantly different in rs3798758. Logistic regression analysis showed that rs12702047 was significantly associated with 2D:4D in both hands (p < 0.05). Simple Summary: Yellow catfish is an economically important fish that lives in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River Basin in China. Due to the intensive farming and overuse of drugs, viral and bacterial diseases have emerged and have caused serious problems in domestic fisheries during recent years and thus threaten the production of aquaculture. It has been proved that exploring disease-resistant varieties is the key way to raising the aquaculture production of yellow catfish. Previous research showed that TLR3 is involved in the antiviral response in mammals. However, the molecular mechanism of immune response against viruses in teleost fish remains unclear. In this study, the gene structure and evolutionary conservation of TLR3 in teleost fish, as well as the tissue distribution in hybrid yellow catfish and its response to Aeromonas hydrophila and poly (I:C) at different time points, were systematically investigated. Our results showed that TLR3 played a significant role in hybrid yellow catfish response to viral infection. Our study provides theoretical basis for further research on the molecular mechanism of antivirus response in fish and the cultivation of hybrid yellow catfish with high resistance. As a major mediator of cellular response to viral infection in mammals, Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) was proved to respond to double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). However, the molecular mechanism by which TLR3 functions in the viral infection response in teleosts remains to be investigated. In this study, the Toll-like receptor 3 gene of the hybrid yellow catfish was identified and characterized by comparative genomics. Furthermore, multiple sequence alignment, genomic synteny and phylogenetic analysis suggested that the homologous TLR3 genes were unique to teleosts. Gene structure analysis showed that five exons and four introns were common components of TLR3s in the 12 examined species, and interestingly the third exon in teleosts was the same length of 194 bp. Genomic synteny analysis indicated that TLR3s were highly conserved in various teleosts, with similar organizations of gene arrangement. De novo predictions showed that TLR3s were horseshoe-shaped in multiple taxa except for avian (with a round-shaped structure). Phylogenetic topology showed that the evolution of TLR3 was consistent with the evolution of the studied species. Selection analysis showed that the evolution rates of TLR3 proteins were usually higher than those of TLR3-TIR domains, indicating that the latter were more conserved. Tissue distribution analysis showed that TLR3s were widely distributed in the 12 tested tissues, with the highest transcriptions in liver and intestine. In addition, the transcription levels of TLR3 were significantly increased in immune-related tissues after infection of exogenous Aeromonas hydrophila and poly (I:C). Molecular docking showed that TLR3 in teleosts forms a complex with poly (I:C). Purpose: Soil nutrient management and fertilizer use by farmers are important for sustainable grain production. The authors examined the effect of an experimental agricultural extension program, the science and technology backyard, in promoting sustainable soil nutrient management in the North China Plain (NCP). The science and technology backyard integrates farmer field schools, field demonstrations, and case-to-case counselling to promote sustainable farming practices among rural smallholders. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a large-scale household survey of more than 2,000 rural smallholders. The authors used a multivariate regression analysis as the benchmark to assess the effect of the science-and-technology backyard on smallholder soil nutrient management. Furthermore, the authors used coarse exact matching (CEM) methods to control for potential bias due to self-selection and the (endogenous) switching regression approach as the main empirical analysis. Findings: The results show that the science-and-technology backyard program increased smallholders' wheat yield by approximately 0.23 standard deviation; however, no significant increase in maize yield was observed. Regarding soil nutrient use efficiency, the authors found a significant improvement in smallholders' phosphorus and potassium use efficiencies for both wheat and maize production, and a significant improvement in nitrogen use efficiency for wheat production, but no significant improvement of nitrogen use efficiency for maize production. Originality/value: This study evaluated a novel participatory agricultural extension model to improve soil nutrient management practices among smallholders. The integration of agronomists' scientific knowledge and smallholders' local contextual experiences could be an effective way to improve farmers' soil nutrient management. Background: Bronchiectasis is a highly heterogeneous chronic airway disease with marked geographic and ethnic variations. Most influential cohort studies to date have been performed in Europe and USA, which serve as the examples for developing a cohort study in China where there is a high burden of bronchiectasis. The Establishment of China Bronchiectasis Registry and Research Collaboration (BE-China) is designed to: (1) describe the clinical characteristics and natural history of bronchiectasis in China and identify the differences of bronchiectasis between the western countries and China; (2) identify the risk factors associated with disease progression in Chinese population; (3) elucidate the phenotype and endotype of bronchiectasis by integrating the genome, microbiome, proteome, and transcriptome with detailed clinical data; (4) facilitate large randomized controlled trials in China.Methods: The BE-China is an ongoing prospective, longitudinal, multi-center, observational cohort study aiming to recruit a minimum of 10,000 patients, which was initiated in January 2020 in China. Comprehensive data, including medical history, aetiological testing, lung function, microbiological profiles, radiological scores, comorbidities, mental status, and quality of life (QoL), will be collected at baseline. Patients will be followed up annually for up to 10 years to record longitudinal data on outcomes, treatment patterns and QoL. Biospecimens, if possible, will be collected and stored at - 80 °C for further research. Up to October 2021, the BE-China has enrolled 3758 patients, and collected 666 blood samples and 196 sputum samples from 91 medical centers. The study protocol has been approved by the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital ethics committee, and all collaborating centers have received approvals from their local ethics committee. All patients will be required to provide written informed consent to their participation.Conclusions: Findings of the BE-China will be crucial to reveal the clinical characteristics and natural history of bronchiectasis and facilitate evidence-based clinical practice in China. In Yangquan County, the sandfly-transmitted virus (Wuxiang virus) was first isolated from sandflies in 2018. However, relationships between the abundance and seasonal fluctuations of local sandflies and sandfly-transmitted viruses are unknown. Herein, we report that sandfly specimens were collected in three villages in Yangquan County, from June to August, 2019. A total of 8363 sandflies were collected (June, 7927; July, 428; August, 8). Eighteen virus strains (June, 18; July, 0; August, 0) were isolated in pools of Phlebotomus chinensis. The genome sequence of the newly isolated virus strain was highly similar to that of the Wuxiang virus (WUXV), isolated from sandflies in Yangquan County in 2018. Our results suggested that the sandfly-transmitted viruses, and the local sandfly population, are stable in Yangquan County, and that June is the peak period for the virus carried by sandflies in this area. The construction of an ecological security pattern can effectively overcome the contradiction between regional human exploitation and ecological protection in the coastal zone. Taking the Xiangshan Bay (XSB) basin as an example, this study identified ecological source areas from three aspects, namely ecosystem services' importance, ecological sensitivity, and landscape connectivity, and then constructed ecological resistance surfaces, identified ecological corridors, and constructed an ecological security pattern. The results show that the natural reserves in the XSB basin were all located in the identified primary ecological source areas, thus indicating the feasibility and reliability of the "importance–connectivity–sensitivity" ecological source identification mechanism in this study. The ecological corridor in the coastal wetland area accounts for about 40% of the total corridor length, which is the link connecting other ecological sources, revealing the important role of coastal wetlands in the coastal ecosystem. Through the ecological security pattern of the XSB basin and field investigation, we put forward suggestions such as clearing Spartina alterniflora, restoring salt marsh wetland vegetation, and strengthening follow-up monitoring for the restoration of coastal wetlands. As private businesses are an integral part of China's market economy, it is essential to foster their expansion in a positive manner. Even though some private enterprises have made significant strides in their ability to innovate independently, the majority of them have not yet established an effective endogenous mechanism of independent innovation, and their independent innovation capability and level are insufficient to meet the requirements of economic and social development in the new era. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the innovation capacity of private businesses. Therefore, the first section of this paper examines the research on measuring enterprise productivity. Second, this paper employs a combination of endogenous dynamics to develop an endogenous dynamics mechanism that encourages innovation in private companies. In addition to employing the DEA model, this paper proposes an evaluation optimization mechanism for assessing the innovation capability of private enterprises in a Chinese province from 2015 to 2021. It concludes that the innovation capability of private enterprises in this province is generally low and that factors such as the number of technical employees, the R&D investment funds of private enterprises, and the number of granted patents have a significant impact. Recent years have witnessed numerous systematic investigations on mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). However, very few research synthesis studies focused on the higher education context in mainland China. This paper provides a systematic review of the findings of 23 studies published between 2015 and 2020 in mainland China. The aim of this review is twofold: 1) to examine prevalent researched elements in extant MALL studies; and 2) to investigate ways in which the two original components of the Situated Learning Theory (SLT), including Legitimate Peripheral Participation and Communities of Practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991), have a bearing on MALL. This systematic review resulted in two major findings. First, five key researched elements were revealed, e.g., target language teaching areas, and adopted applications/software. Second, guided by the two original elements of SLT, four derived elements were identified, namely authenticity, social interactions and collaborations, apprenticeship learning, and beliefs and behaviours. The findings suggest the need to develop sound MALL pedagogies associated with sociocultural aspects of language learning in relevant contexts. This review study also provides insights into how Chinese language professionals and practitioners can improve curriculum design and resource development to adapt to future trends in MALL. The family Rhabdoviridae contain important human and mammalian pathogens that are vectored by different arthropod species. The ground supernatants of mosquitoes were used to inoculate in BHK-21 and C6/36 cells for virus isolation. Then, the viral complete genome sequence was obtained and used for phylogenetic analysis. In this study, we observed a cytopathic effect (CPE) in mosquito cells (C6/36) and rod-like virion after inoculating a pool of Armigeres subalbatus samples collected in Shanxi Province, China, in 2019 (SX1916). Meta-transcriptomics sequencing revealed the presence of two distinctive rhabdoviruses with similar abundance levels, namely, Shanxi Armigeres subalbatus rhabdovirus (SXARV) and Shanxi Arboretum virus (SXABTV). Despite the fact that the SXARV genome (9590 nt) was much shorter than that of SXABTV (11,480 nt), both belonged to the Almendravirus group within Rhabdoviridae whose genomes encoded five proteins (N, P, M, G, and L) and a small hydrophobin (U1) and the difference in lengths is mainly caused by a substantially shorter N protein encoded by SXARV. On the phylogenetic tree, SXABTV was closely related (90.7% amino acid identity at L protein) with the Arboretum virus isolated from Psorophora albigenu mosquitoes in Peru in 2014, whereas SXARV was distantly related to Rio Chico virus (63.3% amino acid identity), a genetic distance large enough to be defined as a new species within Rhabdoviridae. OBJECTIVE: To establish a prediction model of coronary heart disease (CHD) in elderly patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) based on machine learning (ML) algorithms. METHODS: Based on the Medical Big Data Research Centre of Chinese PLA General Hospital in Beijing, China, we identified a cohort of elderly inpatients (≥ 60 years), including 10,533 patients with DM complicated with CHD and 12,634 patients with DM without CHD, from January 2008 to December 2017. We collected demographic characteristics and clinical data. After selecting the important features, we established five ML models, including extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), adaptive boosting (Adaboost) and logistic regression (LR). We compared the receiver operating characteristic curves, area under the curve (AUC) and other relevant parameters of different models and determined the optimal classification model. The model was then applied to 7447 elderly patients with DM admitted from January 2018 to December 2019 to further validate the performance of the model. RESULTS: Fifteen features were selected and included in the ML model. The classification precision in the test set of the XGBoost, RF, DT, Adaboost and LR models was 0.778, 0.789, 0.753, 0.750 and 0.689, respectively; and the AUCs of the subjects were 0.851, 0.845, 0.823, 0.833 and 0.731, respectively. Applying the XGBoost model with optimal performance to a newly recruited dataset for validation, the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, precision, and AUC were 0.792, 0.808, 0.748 and 0.880, respectively. River flow regulations and thermal regimes have been altered by human-induced interventions (such as dam construction) or climate change (such as air temperature variations). It is of great significance to adopt a well-performed data-driven model to accurately quantify the impact of human-induced interventions or climate change over river water temperature (WT), which can help understand the underlying evolution mechanism of the river thermal regimes by dam operation or climate change. This research applied the Bayesian network-based model (BNM), which can easily identify inherently stronger associated variables with a target variable from multiple influencing variables to predict the daily WT and make a quantitative assessment of the effect produced by Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) construction in the Yangtze River, China. A comparative study between the proposed model and two other models was implemented to verify the predicted accuracy of the BNM. With the help of the BNM model, the impact of reservoir impoundment over water temperature was quantitatively analyzed by calculating the difference between reconstructed water temperature series and observed series during the post-TGR period. The construction of the TGR posed more impact on variations in WT than the impact induced by the climate change according to results. The effect of TGR on WT can be concluded as follows: WT from October to January in post-TGR showed a remarkable warming tendency and an increase in released warmer water volumes than before, while WT showed a cooling tendency during March to June because of the hysteretic effect of WT response to increasing air temperature. Species delimitation is critical to our understanding of evolution, biodiversity, and conservation. However, delimiting species boundaries can be challenging, especially when intraspecific divergence is high (and interspecific divergence is low), and gene flow and incomplete lineage sorting are present. Mygalomorph spiders have become models for examining a variety of evolutionary and biogeographical questions. However, their extreme morphological homogeneity and high genetic structuring make delimiting mygalomorph species especially challenging. Integrative approaches to species delimitation, which combine multiple lines of evidence, have been used to infer the limits of many mygalomorph groups in an independent and reproducible way. Yet molecular species delimitation and phylogenetic relationships of the purseweb spider family Atypidae remain scarce. In this study, we explored the phylogeny and species delimitation of Calommata spiders from southern China using data sets including three mitochondrial (COI, 16S, and 12S) and two nuclear (28S, H3) markers. Our phylogenetic analyses yielded a well‐supported clade containing all southern Chinese Calommata and a sister relationship between C. signata and three new species within it. Based on the single‐locus and multilocus species delimitation analyses, we delimited four Calommata species from southern China: one known species (C. signata) and three new species (C. yuanjiangica sp. n., C. hangzhica sp. n. and C. jinggangica sp. n.). This study thus provides a framework for determining the limits of C. signata sensu lato species and calls for further study of systematics and evolutionary relationships within Calommata and other atypid lineages. Two new species of Clitocella are proposed based on morphological and phylogenetic investigations. Clitocella borealichinensis sp. nov. is closely related to C. orientalis but distinguished from the latter by its slightly smaller basidiospores and hyphae of pileipellis with pale brown to brown intracellular or parietal pigment. Clitocella colorata sp. nov. is closely related to C. popinalis and C. mundula in macromorphology but is differentiated from C. popinalis by its slightly smaller basidiospores and the difference in genetic profile, and from C. mundula by its relatively colorful pileus (white to yellowish white, grayish white to grayish brown, pink white). Phylogenetic analyses based on sequence data from five different loci (ITS, nrLSU, tef1, rpb2 and atp6) support the taxonomic position of the two new species in the genus Clitocella. Effective detection of groundwater in landslide areas is crucial for landslide monitoring. The magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) method is a geophysical technique that can directly detect groundwater. However, its application in landslide groundwater monitoring is often hindered by the complex topography of landslides. This paper presents an MRS framework that accounts for the impact of landslide topography on groundwater detection. The framework includes the use of drone photogrammetry to obtain high-precision topography data and real-time kinematic equipment to acquire the coordinates of key points along the MRS coil. A three-dimensional finite element model is then constructed to calculate the alternating magnetic field generated by the MRS coil and the kernel function required for MRS inversion. Two typical landslide topography models—terrace and gully—are constructed and analyzed using numerical simulations. The results indicate that landslide topography significantly impacts the quality of groundwater information retrieved by MRS in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional inversions, affecting the accurate detection and identification of infiltration surfaces, sliding zone water, and bedrock surfaces. If accurate topography data are obtained and appropriate kernel functions are calculated, the accuracy of the inversion can be greatly improved. An example of using the MRS method to detect groundwater in a complex landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China is then presented. The MRS inversion results that consider landslide topography are confirmed using borehole data, electrical resistivity tomography detection results, and on-site drainage tunnel investigations. The water-content distribution inside the landslide body is obtained, providing information helpful to define sliding zones in multi-level landslides. Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common adverse reaction of chemotherapy. Many studies have confirmed that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has unique advantages for treating CIPN. However, there is no standard TCM prescription in clinical practice or objective outcome index, and similar efficacy varies. Therefore, in this study, a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of external treatment with Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) for CIPN. This analysis provides evidence-based medical support for the use of CHM for external treatment of CIPN. Methods: Relevant RCTs assessing CHM external treatment of CIPN were searched in nine electronic databases, including the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, China Biology Medicine Disc, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Database, PubMed, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and OVID, from inception to July 2021. A meta-analysis was performed on these studies using RevMan5.3 software. Results: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 33 clinical studies were included, while 1,354 studies were screened out. There were 2,356 patients in total, including 1,208 in the treatment group and 1,148 in the control group. In the treatment group, peripheral neurotoxicity rate, total effect rate, KPS score, TCM syndrome score and efficacy, pain NRS score, and pain relief rate were significantly improved compared with those of the control group (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the peroneal and median nerve conduction velocities were also improved compared with those in the control group (p < 0.05). By creating a funnel plot for the incidence of peripheral neurotoxicity and the total effect rate, we showed that the left and right sides were symmetrical, and that the publication bias was low. Conclusion: CHM external treatment was found to be an effective method for treating CIPN as it significantly improved clinical symptoms and quality of life in patients with CIPN. Recent years have witnessed rapid advances in the transportation of Chinese bayberry fruit in China by express delivery (ED). The mainstream express packaging is a fruit basket filled with Chinese bayberry fruit. In order to analyze the vibration, impact and quality changes of bayberry fruit in the actual ED process, BiQi (BQ) and Dongkui (DK) bayberry fruit were selected as experimental objects. Real‐time acceleration and temperature of Chinese bayberry fruit in the package were recorded during ED transportation. Headspace CO2 gas concentration and squeezed juice percentage were measured when unpacking. The firmness and electronic nose (E‐nose) linear discriminant analysis (LDA) statistical results were measured during the 2‐day shelf life. The results show that semivacuum packaging can reduce the vibration intensity of Chinese bayberry fruit in the package. Whether it was BQ or DK bayberry fruit, the fruit quality of Chinese bayberry fruit sent by ED was considerably worse than that of road vehicle (RV) transportation when unpacking. The LDA statistics of E‐nose data showed that ED‐treated bayberry fruit barely constituted the fresh part. However, differences were noticed between the varieties. Compared with DK bayberry fruit, BQ bayberry fruit had more of its juice squeezed; further, its firmness had decreased more. In conclusion, multiple impacts and high‐intensity vibrations are the main reason for Chinese bayberry fruit damage during ED transportation. Compared to BQ bayberry fruit, DK bayberry fruit is more resistant to mechanical damage and is more suitable for ED. Practical Applications: Cultivar Dongkui bayberry is more resistant to mechanical damage than BiQi bayberry after many aspects of comparison, and is suitable for express delivery (ED) transportation. To reduce the mechanical damage of bayberry fruit, it is suggested to improve the impact‐resistant design of existing packaging styles, with simply adding a layer of absorbent pad to the bottom of the fruit basket. The form of foam box semivacuum packaging is not only suitable to bayberry, but also to others such as strawberries during ED transportation. Reason for mechanical damage of bayberry fruit during express delivery (ED) transportation is explained. The quality of BiQi and Dongkui (DK) bayberry fruit when unpacking and shelf life is analyzed from multiple angles.
