Objective: To investigate whether Naoxueshu Oral Liquid (NXS) could promote hematoma absorption in post-craniotomy hematoma (PCH) patients. Methods: This is an open-label, multicenter, and randomized controlled trial conducted at 9 hospitals in China. Patients aged 18–80 years with post-craniotomy supratentorial hematoma volume ranging from 10 to 30 mL or post-craniotomy infratentorial hematoma volume less than 10 mL, or intraventricular hemorrhage following cranial surgery were enrolled. They were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to the NXS (10 mL thrice daily for 15 days) or control groups using a randomization code table. Standard medical care was administered in both groups. The primary outcome was the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15. The secondary outcomes included the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 7, the absolute reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 7 and 15, and the change in neurological function from day 1 to day 7 and 15. The safety was closely monitored throughout the study. Moreover, subgroup analysis was performed based on age, gender, history of diabetes, and etiology of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Results: A total of 120 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned between March 30, 2018 and April 15, 2020. One patient was lost to follow-up in the control group. Finally, there were 119 patients (60 in the NXS group and 59 in the control group) included in the analysis. In the full analysis set (FAS) analysis, the NXS group had a greater percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15 than the control group [median (Q1, Q3): 85% (71%, 97%) vs. 76% (53%, 93%), P<0.05]. The secondary outcomes showed no statistical significance between two groups, either in FAS or per-protocol set (P>0.05). Furthermore, no adverse events were reported during the study. In the FAS analysis, the NXS group exhibited a higher percentage reduction in hematoma volume on day 15 in the following subgroups: male patients, patients younger than 65 years, patients without diabetes, or those with initial cranial surgery due to ICH (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The administration of NXS demonstrated the potential to promote the percentage reduction in hematoma volume from day 1 to day 15. This intervention was found to be safe and feasible. Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of tuberculosis (TB) and can be difficult to diagnose and treat. We aimed to describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, disease spectrum, outcome, and prognostic factors of patients treated for TBM in China. Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted from 2009 to 2019 enrolling all presumptive TBM patients referred to Xijing tertiary Hospital from 27 referral centers in and around Shaanxi province, China. Patients with clinical features suggestive of TBM (abnormal CSF parameters) were included in the study if they had adequate baseline information to be classified as "confirmed," "probable," or "possible" TBM according to international consensus TBM criteria and remained in follow-up. Patients with a confirmed alternative diagnosis or severe immune compromise were excluded. Clinical presentation, central nervous system imaging, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) results, TBM score, and outcome--assessed using the modified Barthel disability index--were recorded and compared. Findings: A total of 341 presumptive TBM patients met selection criteria; 63 confirmed TBM (25 culture positive, 42 Xpert-MTB/RIF positive), 66 probable TBM, 163 possible TBM, and 49 "not TBM." Death was associated with BMRC grade III (OR = 5.172; 95%CI: 2.298-11.641), TBM score = 15 (OR = 3.843; 95%CI: 1.372-10.761), age > 60 years (OR = 3.566; 95%CI: 1.022-12.442), and CSF neutrophil ratio = 25% (OR = 2.298; 95%CI: 1.027-5.139). Among those with confirmed TBM, nearly one-third (17/63, 27.0%) had a TBM score < 12; these patients exhibited less classic meningitis symptoms and signs and had better outcomes compared with those with a TBM score = 12. In this group, signs of disseminated/miliary TB (OR = 12.427; 95%CI: 1.138-135.758) and a higher TBM score (=15, OR = 8.437; 95%CI: 1.328-53.585) were most strongly associated with death. Conclusion: TBM patients who are older (>60 years) have higher TBM scores or CSF neutrophil ratios, have signs of disseminated/miliary TB, and are at greatest risk of death. Whitfordiodendron filipes var. tomentosum is an endemic plant in China. There have been no chemical or pharmacological studies of this plant reported before. In the current research, eight triterpenes and two steroids were obtained. Their structures were established by the analysis of NMR data and comparison with those reported in the literature. These ten structurally diverse compounds comprised five distinct carbon frameworks with different functionalities. The chemotaxonomic significance of these secondary metabolites was discussed, disclosing the common components between the variant W. filipes var. tomentosum and the species W. filipe. Evaluation of α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of these isolates disclosed that compounds 1, 2, 4, and 6 exhibited significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activities (IC50 = 16.6–19.2 μM), which were close in value to the positive control acarbose (IC50 = 11.5 μM). Moreover, the binding modes between the biologically active compounds 1, 2, 4, and 6 and the α-glucosidase protein were preliminarily studied using molecular docking. This study not only showed the chemical and biological profile of the plant W. filipes var. tomentosum but also revealed that these components could be developed as hypoglycemic lead compounds. Promoting green investment is the inevitable choice for sustainable economics against climate change. We examine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected corporate green investment. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in China, we document the negative and significant effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on corporate green investment. Further analyses suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic impeded corporate green investment by exacerbating firms' financial constraints. We also find that the COVID-19 pandemic had no significant effect on total investment, suggesting that the pandemic shock only changed investment structure. Objectives: Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration (TFBA) is a major cause of accidental death in children. Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) may be caused by TFBA, but there are few reports about LRTI associated with TFBA. This study collected TFBA cases in our hospital to analyze LRTI and determine its risk factors. Methods: A total of 194 children who underwent tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) extraction in The Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from June 2019 to April 2020 were enrolled. CT chest is routinely used in the workup of suspected airway FB at our institution to evaluate for patients, a FB was already highly suspected. The retention time was defined as from the time of TFB inhalation or presentation (if there was no history of TFBA) to the time of TFB removal. General characteristics including weight, clinical symptoms, operative records, cervicothoracic CT, retention time, type of TFB and postoperative hospitalization time were collected. Chi-square tests, rank sum tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: The incidence of LRTI was 46.6%, 68.6%, and 68.6% when the retention time was within 24 hours, between 24 hours and up to 1 week and more than 1 week, respectively. Postoperative hospitalization time of LRTI group was significantly longer than that of non-LRTI group. Findings for cervicothoracic CT as pneumonia, emphysema, atelectasis meant more serious clinical manifestations and the retention time was longer in the LRTI group than in the non-LRTI group. There was a positive correlation between the retention time of a TFB and LRTI in multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: The incidence of LRTI caused by TFBA is high. LRTI is association with longer postoperative hospitalization time. The TFB retention time is an independent risk factor for LRTI. If a patient presents with significant LRTI symptoms, a course of steroids and antibiotics maybe a safer approach rather than proceeding immediately with bronchoscopic removal. Little is known about the differences in mortality among non-institutionalized geriatric and younger patients with schizophrenia. In this study long-term mortality and suicidal behavior of all the geriatric (age greater than or equal to 65 years), middle-age (age 41-64 years), and young (age 15-40 years) subjects with schizophrenia living in a Chinese rural community were compared. A 10 year follow-up investigation among a 1994 cohort (n = 510) of patients with schizophrenia was conducted in Xinjin County, Chengdu, China. Compared with young subjects, geriatric subjects with schizophrenia were more likely to be female, have more previous physical illness, never accepted treatment, and practice religious (p less than or equal to 0.01). There were no significant differences of suicide attempts among the three groups. Young subjects had a higher rate of suicide (1,033.8 per 100,000 person-years), and geriatric subjects had a higher rate of deaths due to other causes (accident and natural causes) (4,314.2 per 100,000 person-years). Standardized mortality ratios for both suicide and deaths due to other causes were highest in young subjects and the lowest in geriatric subjects. Patients with schizophrenia in all age groups had a marked increase in mortality and suicide. Specific intervention strategies for decreasing mortality and suicide should be developed for patients with schizophrenia in different age groups.

Isaria cicadae is a famous edible and medicinal fungus in China and Asia. The molecular basis of morphogenesis and synnemal formation needs to be understood in more detail because this is the main source of biomass production in I. cicadae. In the present study, a fruiting body formation-related gene with a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchoring protein (GPI-Ap) gene homolog IcFBR1 was identified by screening random insertion mutants. Targeted deletion of IcFBR1 resulted in abnormal formation of synnemata, impairing aerial hyphae growth and sporulation. The IcFBR1 mutants were defective in the utilization of carbon sources with reduced polysaccharide contents and the regulation of amylase and protease activities. Transcriptome analysis of ΔIcfbr1 showed that IcFBR1 deletion influenced 49 gene ontology terms, including 23 biological processes, 9 molecular functions, and 14 cellular components. IcFBR1 is therefore necessary for regulating synnemal development, secondary metabolism, and nutrient utilization in this important edible and medicinal fungus. Background: Little is known about the impacts of schizophrenia on different types of caregiving burden. Aim: This study aims to examine how the severity of schizophrenia, social functioning and aggressive behavior are associated with caregiving burden across different kinship types. Method: The analytic sample included 300 dyads of persons with schizophrenia and their family caregivers in Xinjin, Chengdu, China. The 10th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) was utilized to identify the patients, whose symptom severity, social functioning and aggressive behavior were measured. Caregiving burden was estimated using the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers–short (BSFC-s). Results: A higher level of burden was significantly associated with female caregivers, larger family size, lower income, worse symptoms, poorer functional status and more aggressive behaviors. Parent caregivers showed greater burden if the patients had better functioning of social interest and concern or more aggression toward property. Mother caregivers showed greater burden than fathers. Spouses tended to perceive greater burden if the patients had better marital functioning, poorer occupational functioning or more aggressive behaviors toward property. Patients attacking others or a father with schizophrenia was related to a higher burden of child caregivers. A heavier burden of other relatives was correlated with patients' more verbal aggression and self-harm. Conclusion: This study shows the distinct impacts of disease-related factors on the caregiving burden across different kinship types. Our findings have implications for health-care professionals and practitioners in terms of developing more targeted family-based or individualized intervention to ameliorate burden according to kinship types and deal with behavioral and functional problems in schizophrenia. Background: Improving patients' perception of social support is significant not only for their re-adaptation to life but also for alleviating caregivers' burden. Aim: This study aims to examine an integrated model regarding social support, psychotic symptoms and caregiver burden. Methods: Persons with schizophrenia (N 1 = 300) and their family caregivers (N 2 = 300) in Xinjin County, Chengdu, China, completed the survey to report their demographics, patients' perception of social support (Duke Social Support Index), psychotic symptoms (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) and caregiver burden (Burden Scale for Family Caregivers, Short Version). Structural equation modelling was utilised to test the proposed model. Results: The degree of caregiver burden differed significantly within subgroups of patients' gender and education, as well as caregivers' gender, education and employment. Caregiver burden was negatively related to patients' age and household income. Social interaction partially mediated the relationship between instrumental and subjective social support (total effect = 0.451, p <.01). Subjective social support fully mediated the impact of social interaction on psychotic symptoms (total effect = −0.099, p <.05). In the final model, instrumental social support was positively associated with social interaction (p <.001) and increased subjective social support (p <.05). Increased subjective social support showed correlation with a lower degree of psychotic symptoms (p <.01), which was related to a lower level of caregiver burden (p <.001). Conclusion: This study shows the associations of patients' social support with psychotic symptoms and caregiver burden. Culture-specific psychosocial interventions should be provided for both patients and caregivers to enrich external support and reduce psychotic symptoms and caregivers' burden within the health care environment. A new species, Manglietia pubipedunculata Q. W. Zeng & X. M. Hu (Magnoliaceae) is described and illustrated from Yunnan, China. In addition to macromorphological examination, we comparatively studied on micromorphology of leaf epidermis, leaf structure, and epidermal cell on the sclerotesta. This new species is similar to M. kwangtungensis in terms of having dense pubescence, however, their pubescence are quite different. Manglietia pubipedunculata has appressed, compressed, shorter and sparser pubescence consisting of single or two cells. Moreover, it differs from M. kwangtungensis by showing shorter and thicker peduncles, longer styles, basal carpels covered with sparsely brown appressed pubescence, and more ovules per carpel. Furthermore, the new species has thinner leaves, brown and rugged surfaces on sclerotesta, and the alveolate cell pattern consisting of pentagon or hexagon cells with papilla on secondary cell wall under the observation by SEM. The phylogenetic analysis from two nuclear PHYA and LEAFY and chloroplast trnH-psbA sequences of 11 taxa reveals that M. pubipedunculata is a distinct species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new brominated polyacetylene, xestonariene I (1), along with three known related analogues (2–4), was obtained from Chinese marine spongeXestospongia testudinaria. Its structure was determined on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with literature data. Compound4exhibited significant inhibitory activity against pancreatic lipase, which plays a key role in preventing obesity, with an IC50value of 0.61 μM, being comparable to that of the positive control orlistat (IC50 = 0.78 μM). Objective: This study examined the differences in 14-year outcomes of persons with schizophrenia with and without family caregiver(s) in a rural community in China.Methods: All participants with schizophrenia (n = 510) aged 15 years and older were identified in a 1994 epidemiological investigation of 123,572 people and followed up in 2004 and 2008 in Xinjin County, Chengdu, China.Results: Individuals without family caregiver in 1994 had significantly higher rate of homelessness (23.8 %) and lower rate of survival (47.5 %) in 2008 than those with family caregivers (5.1 and 70.9 %). Compared with individuals with family caregivers, those without family caregivers were more likely to be male, live alone, have fewer family members, lower family economic status, lower rates of marriage and complete remission, higher mean scores on PANSS and lower mean score on GAF in 2008. The predictors of participants without family caregiver in 2008 included having a small number of family members at baseline and being male.Conclusions: The absence of a family caregiver is a predictive factor of poorer long-term outcome of persons with schizophrenia in the rural community. In this paper we discuss the location, nature, and evolution of the tectonic boundary between the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt and the Longgang Block, northeast China. The boundary in terms of paleogeography, which involves a study of the Liaohe Group, or tectonics. Employing non-seismic geophysical data (e.g., gravity data and magnetotelluric soundings), existing geological data, and the differences in physical properties between the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt and the Longgang Block, we clarified the spatial distribution of the tectonic boundary, and characterized the geological bodies at different depths on either side of the boundary. We analyzed the most recently updated Bouguer gravity anomaly, gravity, magnetic, and electrical profile data, as well as comprehensive data on the physical properties of the rocks in the research area, thus providing information on the geological nature of the boundary at deep levels. The results indicate that during the early period of formation of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt, a basin-controlling boundary fault developed that constituted the original tectonic boundary between the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt and the Longgang Block. This fault extended from Shuangtaling to Sandaoling, Lian Shanguan, Dawanggou, Balidianzi, and Erhulai to Guaimozi, following a roughly east–west trend. Most previous studies have considered that the Liaohe Group, which extends from Benxi City to Benxi County and Huanren County, is the paleo-geographic boundary of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt. Background: The long-term outcome of never-treated patients with schizophrenia is unclear.Aims: To compare the 14-year outcomes of never-treated and treated patients with schizophrenia and to establish predictors for never being treated.Method: All participants with schizophrenia (n = 510) in Xinjin, Chengdu, China were identified in an epidemiological investigation of 123 572 people and followed up from 1994 to 2008.Results: The results showed that there were 30.6%, 25.0% and 20.4% of patients who received no antipsychotic medication in 1994, 2004 and 2008 respectively. Compared with treated patients, those who were never treated in 2008 were significantly older, had significantly fewer family members, had higher rates of homelessness, death from other causes, being unmarried, living alone, being without a caregiver and poor family attitudes. Partial and complete remission in treated patients (57.3%) was significantly higher than that in the never-treated group (29.8%). Predictors of being in the never-treated group in 2008 encompassed baseline never-treated status, being without a caregiver and poor mental health status in 1994.Conclusions: Many patients with schizophrenia still do not receive antipsychotic medication in rural areas of China. The 14-year follow-up showed that outcomes for the untreated group were worse. Background Synanthropic rats and mice share the same environment with humans and play an important role in epidemiology of toxoplasmosis; however, there is limited information about prevalence and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in synanthropic rats and mice in China. Findings In the present study, the prevalence and genetic characterization of T. gondii naturally infected synanthropic rodents (Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus) were investigated in the urban area of Xuzhou city, Eastern China between June 2013 and August 2014. DNA from the brain of each animal was prepared and screened by specific PCR assay targeting 35-fold repeated B1 gene (B1-PCR). PCR positive DNA samples were further genotyped by multilocus PCR-RFLP. Overall, out of 123 synanthropic rodents, 29 samples were positive by B1 gene-targeted PCR (23.6%). Of these, 7 out of 31 (22.3%) M. musculus were positive, whereas the positive rate of R. norvegicus was 23.9% (22/92). Multi-locus PCR-RFLP analysis reveals that seven PCR-positive samples were completely genotyped and they were identified as type China 1 (ToxoDB# 9). Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first report of molecular detection and genetic characterization of T. gondii infection in synanthropic rodents in Eastern China. The results of the present study showed a high infection pressure of T. gondii exists in the environment and synanthropic rodents infected by T. gondii may be an important source of infection for cats and other animals. Magnolia hookeri var. longirostrata D.X. Li & R.Z. Zhou, a new variety from Yunnan, China is described and illustrated. Its pollen morphology is also analyzed. It is morphologically closely allied to M. hookeri, but differs in its smaller carpels, longer and narrower gynoecia, longer and glabrous peduncles, longer fruit aggregates, and small-tuberculate follicles with longer beaks at the apex. Background: The long-term work performance of persons with schizophrenia in the community is unclear. This study examined the status of long-term work functioning and the predictors of poor work status among patients with schizophrenia in a Chinese rural area. Methods: A 10-year follow-up investigation (1994-2004) of a cohort ( n = 510) of persons with schizophrenia was conducted in Xinjin County, Chengdu, China. Results: Compared with baseline data, work functioning of patients with schizophrenia deteriorated after 10 years. The rates of not working increased significantly from 12.0% in 1994 to 23.0% in 2004. Bivariate analyses showed that the poor work functioning in 2004 was significantly associated with male gender, older age, older age of first onset, higher level of education, longer duration of illness, lower family economic status, lack of caregivers, poor work status in 1994, living in shabby or unstable house, marked symptoms, and higher score on the Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS). In multiple logistic regression analyses, higher score of SDSS and poor work status in 1994 were identified as unique predictors of poor work status in 2004. Conclusion: The status of work functioning of persons with schizophrenia decreased over the course of the illness. The risk factors for poor work functioning and specific socio-cultural environment should be considered in planning community mental health services and rehabilitation for these patients. Background: Many people with schizophrenia remain untreated in the community. Long-term mortality and suicidal behaviour among never-treated individuals with schizophrenia in the community are unknown.Aims: To explore 10-year mortality and suicidal behaviour among never-treated individuals with schizophrenia.Method: We used data from a 10-year prospective follow-up study (1994-2004) among people with schizophrenia in Xinjin County, Chengdu, China.Results: The mortality rate for never-treated individuals with schizophrenia was 2761 per 100 000 person-years during follow-up. There were no significant differences of rates of suicide and all-cause mortality between never-treated and treated individuals. The standardised mortality ratio (SMR) for never-treated people was 10.4 (95% CI 7.2-15.2) and for treated individuals 6.5 (95% CI 5.2-8.5). Compared with treated people, never-treated individuals were more likely to be older, poorer, have a longer duration of illness, marked symptoms and fewer family members.Conclusions: The never-treated individuals have similar mortality to and a higher proportion of marked symptoms than treated people, which may reflect the poor outcome of the individuals without treatment. The higher rates of mortality, homelessness and never being treated among people with schizophrenia in low- and middle-income nations might challenge presumed wisdom about schizophrenia outcomes in these countries. The article presents an analysis on the ensuing conflict between China and Taiwan and its implications for Taiwan's economy. It cites the two countries' conflict over the Olympic Torch relay, which according to the author reflects a petty behavior on the countries' government officials. Moreover, it probes into the underlying factors that led to the deepening conflict between the two countries in the context of economy, geographic and politics relative to the cross-strait relation existing between them. The tea-like beverage Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (Stevia) is popular in China because it reduces blood glucose and has a sweet taste. In this work, a comprehensive quality assessment of Stevia led to the discovery of five phenylethanoid glycosides, namely steviophethanoside (1), cuchiloside (2), salidroside (3), icariside D (4), and tyrosol (5). Of them, compound 1 is a novel compound. Mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy were employed to confirm the absolute configuration. A hydrolytic step with 4 N TFA at 95 °C for 4 h was used to confirm the monosaccharides. In addition, Discovery Studio 4.0 was used to predict the ADME and toxicity activity of compound 1. The results suggested that compound 1 was biocompatible and had poor toxicity, which was verified by rat INS-1 islet β cells through an MTT assay. Meanwhile, a significant stimulatory effect on INS-1 cells was observed, which indicated a hypoglycemic effect of compound 1. 3-Nor-spongiolide A ( 1 ), belonging to the extremely rare 3-nor-spongian carbon skeleton, and spongiolides A ( 2 ) and B ( 3 ), having γ -butenolide instead of furan ring as usual for ring D, together with six related known metabolites were isolated from South China Sea sponge Spongia officinalis as its metabolic components. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of three new compounds 1 – 3 were determined by ECD calculations. It is important to deal with energy saving in buildings of one city level, and plan the energy system from one building to one city level. We strongly suggest conducting urban building energy planning (UBEP) in the urban planning field in China. There are two main characteristics of an urban building energy system. First, the terminal building energy demand is dynamically timely. Second, the energy demand, energy sources supply, energy equipments, and networks of heating, cooling, gas, and electricity, are distributed in an urban space. It is meaningful to conduct an innovative urban energy planning with space distribution and time dynamic simulation. Therefore, an UBEP simulation tool, developed by our research group, is introduced. Finally, a case of energy planning in Beijing City in 2010 for heating and air conditioning system is dynamically simulated and analyzed. To meet the same building energy demand in Beijing, such as heating, air conditioning, gas, and electricity, different energy equipments, such as boiler, combined heating and power, combined cooling, heating, and power system, and heat pump based on different energy sources, such as coal, gas, and electricity, should be planned alternatively. Also, an optimum urban energy system with high energy efficiency and low environmental emission can be achieved. This simulation tool contains most models of heating and cooling energy systems in China. We can validate the models with statistical data from previous or present simulation, and the simulation results in future planning can serve as guidance for the construction of municipal energy infrastructure. We can conclude that simulation in time dimension shows the characteristics of dynamic load in each nodes of the energy flow. Molecular networking strategy-based prioritization of the isolation of the rarely studied soft coral Sinularia tumulosa yielded 14 sesquiterpenes. These isolated constituents consisted of nine different types of carbon frameworks, namely asteriscane, humulane, capillosane, seco-asteriscane, guaiane, dumortane, cadinane, farnesane, and benzofarnesane. Among them, situmulosaols A–C (1 , 3 and 4) were previously undescribed ones, whose structures with absolute configurations were established by the combination of extensive spectral data analyses, quantum mechanical-nuclear magnetic resonance and time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism calculations, the Snatzke's method, and the modified Mosher's method. Notably, situmulosaol C (4) was the second member of capillosane-type sesquiterpenes. The plausible biogenetic relationships of these skeletally different sesquiterpenes were proposed. All sesquiterpenoids were evaluated for their antibacterial, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory effects. The bioassay results showed compound 14 exhibited significant antibacterial activities against a variety of fish and human pathogenic bacteria with MIC 90 values ranging from 3.6 to 33.8 μg/mL. Moreover, moderate cytotoxic effects against HEL cells for components 13 and 14 and moderate inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells for substance 13 were also observed. • The southern margin of the Lianshanguan intrusion is the location of the tectonic boundary. • The southward dip of the tectonic boundary indicates the Liaoji Belt was a rift belt. • The northward dip of the tectonic boundary indicates the orogenic stage of the Liaoji Belt. • The tectonic boundary in the Lianshanguan area dips at 60–70°. The tectonic evolution of the Paleoproterozoic Jiao–Liao–Ji Belt, which is located in the North China Craton in northeastern China, is the subject of ongoing debate. Most previous studies on this belt have been based on traditional geological methods, with most of the data being obtained from the surface, leading to uncertainties regarding the deep geological structure of the belt. This has restricted our understanding of the tectonic character and development of the belt; however, this limitation could be overcome by geophysical studies. Here, we analyze and interpret newly collected rock physical property data (density, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity) and non-seismic geophysical data (gravity, magnetic, and magnetotelluric sounding data) for the Lianshanguan area to infer the location, configuration, and nature of the tectonic boundary between the Paleoproterozoic Jiao–Liao–Ji Belt and the Archean Longgang Block. The Lianshanguan rock mass, which belongs to the Archean Longgang Block, shows a weak gravity anomaly (0–6 mGal) and high resistivity (103.6–104 Ω·m). The area south of the Lianshanguan rock mass consists of the Paleoproterozoic Liaohe Group and displays an intermediate magnetic anomaly (0–200 nT) and low resistivity (10–102.5 Ω·m). We therefore infer that the tectonic boundary of the Jiao–Liao–Ji Belt is located along the southern margin of the Lianshanguan intrusion. We also show that the tectonic boundary in the Eastern Liaoning–Southern Jilin area trends E–W and extends from Shuangtaling through Lianshanguan, Caohecheng, Balidianzi, and to Guaimozi. The boundary between the Longgang Block and the Jiao–Liao–Ji Belt dips predominantly to the south, suggesting an extensional tectonic regime during the Paleoproterozoic time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The fungal genus Muscodor was erected on the basis of Muscodor albus, an endophytic fungus originally isolated from Cinnamomum zeylanicum. It produces a mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with antimicrobial activity that can be used as mycofumigants. The genus currently comprises five species. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of a new species of Muscodor on the basis of five endophytic fungal strains from leaves of Actinidia chinensis, Pseudotaxus chienii and an unidentified broad leaf tree in the Fengyangshan Nature Reserve, Zhejiang Province, Southeast of China. They exhibit white colonies on potato dextrose agar (PDA) media, rope-like mycelial strands, but did not sporulate. The optimum growth temperature is 25°C. The results of a phylogenetic analysis based on four loci (ITS1–5.8S–ITS2, 28S rRNA, rpb2 and tub1) are consistent with the hypothesis that these five strains belong to a single taxon. All five strains also produce volatile chemical components with antimicrobial activity in vitro, which were different from those previously described for other Muscodor species. Objective: Acute kidney injury (AKI) seriously affects the health of both pregnant women and fetuses. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of pregnancy-related AKI (PR-AKI)., Methods: This case series study enrolled pregnant women with PR-AKI admitted to the surgical intensive care unit of Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine between January 2010 and December 2020., Results: Thirty-one PR-AKI patients were enrolled with a mean age of 29.16 ± 4.97 years. Seventeen pregnant women (54.84%) had complete recovery of renal function, 5 (16.13%) had partial recovery of renal function, 2 (6.45%) patients had no renal function improvement, and 7 (22.58%) died. Among the 31 patients with 35 fetuses, 25 (80.6%) pregnant women had poor fetal outcomes, including 5 cases of stillbirths, 5 neonatal asphyxia, 18 premature births, 10 low birth weight, and 8 deficient birth weight infants. Compared to cases with good fetal outcomes, cases with poor fetal outcomes had significantly shorter gestational weeks (39.26 ± 1.53 vs. 31.62 ± 5.50, P = 0.002), lower platelet count (217.13 ± 122.87 vs. 90.24 ± 84.88, P = 0.005), lower hemoglobin (94.19 ± 13.21 vs. 74.48 ± 20.78, P = 0.036), higher blood urea nitrogen (11.87 ± 4.28 vs. 19.47 ± 10.98, P = 0.013), and higher uric acid (262.41 ± 167.00 vs. 586.87 ± 144.52, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: The maternal renal function of women with PR-AKI might improve after treatment, but occurrence rates of adverse fetal outcomes were still high., (© 2023. The chemical investigation of the rarely studied soft coral Sinularia tumulosa resulted in the discovery of five oxygenated cembrane diterpenes 1-5, including two new compounds situmulins A (1) and B (2). The structures of 1 and 2 were established through the extensive analyses of 1D and 2D NMR spectral data together with the comparisons with the known compounds. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) ECD approach, while the relative configuration of 2 was assigned via the quantum mechanical-NMR (QM-NMR) calculations. It might be worth to point out it is the first time to disclose the presence of cembrane diterpenes in the title species. In the bioassays, compound 2 not only showed strong antibacterial activities against fish pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus parauberis FP KSP28 and Phoyobacterium damselae FP2244 with both minimum inhibitory concentration for 90 % (MIC 90 ) values of 25 μM, but also demonstrated substantial inhibitory efficacy against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium bacteria G1, G4, G7, G8 and G13 from several individuals, with MIC 90 values of 25, 50, 100, 50 and 25 μM, respectively., (© 2023 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Two new highly functionalized cembrane diterpenoids named ximaolobophytolides A (1) and B (2) as minor components, together with seven related known compounds (3-9), have been isolated and identified from the Ximao soft coral Lobophytum sp. They were characterized by the presence of an α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety. Based on the comprehensive analyses of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data, the absolute configurations of these two new compounds were elucidated by the combination of quantum mechanical (QM)-NMR and time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD) calculation approaches. In the anti-tumor bioassays, compounds 3-9 showed moderate to significant inhibitory effects (IC 50 values ranging from 29.66 to 0.39 μM) against the proliferations of five tumor cells HEL, A549, H1975, MDA-MB-231, and H1299. The present investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum resulted in the discovery of six new polyoxygenated diterpenes, namely sartrocheliols A-E ( 1 , 3 , 5 - 8 ) along with four known ones, 2 , 4 , 9 , and 10 . Based on extensive spectroscopic data analysis, sartrocheliol A ( 1 ) was identified as an uncommon capnosane diterpene, while sartrocheliols B-E ( 3 , 5 - 8 ) were established as cembrane diterpenes. They displayed diverse structural features not only at the distinctly different carbon frameworks but also at the various types of heterocycles, including the epoxide, γ-lactone, furan, and pyran rings. Moreover, their absolute configurations were determined by a combination of quantum mechanical-nuclear magnetic resonance (QM-NMR) approach, modified Mosher's method, and X-ray diffraction analysis. In the anti-tumor bioassay, compound 4 exhibited moderate cytotoxic activities against A549, H1975, MDA-MB-231, and H1299 cells with the IC 50 values ranging from 26.3 to 47.9 μM.

A further study on the rarely reported soft coral Sarcophyton mililatensis disclosed five new flexible cembrane-type macrocyclic diterpenes sarcomililatols C-G (1-5) and two known analogues 6 and 7. The structures and absolute configurations of natural macrocyclic compounds 1-6 were established by the extensive spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT ECD) calculations, chemical reaction, and modified Mosher's method. The first investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Sarcophyton boettgeri afforded five new capnosane diterpenes, sarboettgerins A-E ( 1 - 5 ), together with one known related compound, pavidolide D ( 6 ). Their structures, including absolute configurations, were elucidated by the extensive spectroscopic analysis, 13 C NMR calculations, and X-ray diffraction. Among them, new compounds 1 - 5 were featured by the rarely encountered Z -geometry double bond Δ 1 within the 5/11-fused bicyclic capnosane carbon framework. Plausible biogenetic relationships of all isolates were proposed, and they might give an insight into future biomimetic synthesis of these novel compounds. The nutritional level of vitamin D may affect musculoskeletal health. We have reported that vitamin D is a pivotal protector against tissue injuries by suppressing local renin-angiotensin system (RAS). This study aimed to explore the role of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the protection against muscle atrophy and the underlying mechanism. A cross-sectional study on participants (n = 1034) in Shanghai (China) was performed to analyze the association between vitamin D level and the risk of low muscle strength as well as to detect the circulating level of angiotensin II (Ang II). In animal studies, dexamethasone (Dex) was applied to induce muscle atrophy in wild-type (WT) and VDR-null mice, and the mice with the induction of muscle atrophy were treated with calcitriol for 10 days. The skeletal muscle cell line C2C12 and the muscle satellite cells were applied in in vitro studies. The increased risk of low muscle strength was correlated to a lower level of vitamin D (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.58) accompanied by an elevation in serum Ang II level. Ang II impaired the myogenic differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts as illustrated by the decrease in the area of myotubes and the downregulation of myogenic factors (myosin heavy chain [MHC] and myogenic differentiation factor D [MyoD]). The phenotype of muscle atrophy induced by Dex and Ang II was aggravated by VDR ablation in mice and in muscle satellite cells, respectively, and mediated by RAS and its downstream phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/forkhead box O1 (PI3K/Akt/FOXO1) signaling. Calcitriol treatment exhibited beneficial effects on muscle function as demonstrated by the increased weight-loaded swimming time, grip strength, and fiber area, and improved fiber type composition via regulating ubiquitin ligases and their substrates MHC and MyoD through suppressing renin/Ang II axis. Taken together, VDR protects against skeletal muscle atrophy by suppressing RAS. A novel species of Penicillium , proposed as P . linzhiense sp.nov was isolated from soil collected in Linzhi Town, Linzhi County, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. DNA sequence analyses from eight different gene regions indicate that the isolate represents a novel species and most closely related to P . janczewskii . The phylogenetic analysis based on a concatenated dataset of three genes, ITS, CaM , and BenA , also confirmed the placement of the novel species within the Canescentia section of the genus Penicillium . Differences in morphology among similar species are detailed and single gene phylogenies based on ITS, CaM and BenA genes as well as a multi-loci gene phylogeny are presented. Cultural studies were performed to study inhibitory activities on plant pathogens. The results reveal a notable antifungal activity against Pyricularia oryzae causing rice blast with an inhibition rate up to 77%, while for other three citrus pathogens, Diaporthe citri , Phyllosticta citrichinaensis , and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides , inhibition rate was 40, 50, and 55% respectively. No noticeable effects were observed for Fusarium graminearum , Botryosphaeria kuwatsukai , and Rhizoctonia solani . Interestingly, unlike other reported members of Canescentia , P . linzhiense showed no antagonistic effect on root rotting fungi. Background: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an illness caused by hantaviruses. Numerous factors modify the risk of hantavirus transmission. This study explored the epidemiological characteristics, differences, and trends in terms of gender, age, season, and living areas of those diagnosed with domestically acquired HFRS in Taiwan from 2001 to 2019., Methods: We examined publicly available annual summary data on the domestic cases with HFRS from 2001 to 2019; these data were obtained from the web database of Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC)., Results: This study analyzed 21 domestic cases with HFRS from Taiwan's CDC databases. In this study of the cases of HFRS in Taiwan, a gradual increase in the cases of those aged ≥40 years acquiring the disease was noted, and a distinct pattern of seasonal variation (spring) was observed. Furthermore, more men had domestically acquired HFRS, and living in Taipei metropolitan area (6 cases [28.6%]) and the rural areas (Gao-Ping region, 9 cases [42.9%]) was identified as a potential risk factor. This study represents the first report of confirmed cases of domestically acquired HFRS from surveillance data from Taiwan's CDC, 2001-2019., Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of longitudinal studies covering a wide geographical area, particularly for highly fluctuating pathogens, to understanding the implications of the transmission of zoonotic diseases in human populations. Important data were identified to inform future surveillance and research efforts in Taiwan.

A new 5α,8α-epidioxysterol, namely yalongsterol A ( 1 ), along with two known related steroids 5α,8α-epidioxy-24-methyl-cholesta-6,24(28)-dien-3β-ol ( 2 ) and (22 E ,24 S )-5α,8α-epidioxy-24-methyl-cholesta-6,22-dien-3β-ol ( 3 ), were isolated from the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia sp. Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses and comparisons of the spectral data with those reported in the literature. In bioassay, compounds 1 - 3 showed moderate immunosuppressive activities against T and/or B lymphocyte cells with IC 50 values ranging from 19.30 to 59.49 μ M, and low cytotoxicity on murine splenocytes with CC 50 values ranging from 40.88 to 62.29 μ M.[Formula: see text].

A new brominated polyacetylene xestonariene J (1), bearing a rare 2,4-dibromo-1-ene-3-yne terminal in the molecule, along with two known related analogues (2 and 3), was obtained from Chinese marine sponge Xestospongia testudinaria. Its structure was determined on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data.

The endophytic fungi Muscodor spp. produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can inhibit and even kill pathogenic fungi, bacteria, and nematodes. Nine endophytic fungal strains, isolated from the shoots of gramineous plants including Arthraxon hispidus, Eleusine indica, Oplismenus undulatifolius, and Oryza granulata, were identified as Muscodor through phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer. Through an SPSS K-means cluster analysis, the nine Muscodor strains were divided into four groups based on the antifungal activities of the VOCs produced by these fungi determined by a two-section confrontation test. The first group contains the strains Y-L-54, W-S-41, Y-S-35, W-T-27, and Y-L-56, which showed the strongest activity. The second and third groups contain W-S-35 and Y-L-43, which showed stronger and moderate activity, respectively. The fourth group contains W-S-38 and N-L-7, which were the weakest in inhibiting the tested pathogens. Thirty-five compounds and the relative amounts of VOCs were determined by SPME-GC-MS and comparison with the NIST14 mass spectrometry database and Agilent MassHunter qualitative and quantitative analyses. These 35 compounds were classified into two different categories: (a) the product of fatty acid degradation, and (b) the intermediate and final metabolite of the metabolic pathway with the precursor of mevalonic acid. SPSS clustering analysis showed that the chemical components of VOCs might be correlated with their bioactivity rather than their phylogenetic assignment and some of the identified compounds might be responsible for antifungal activity. In conclusion, new Muscodor endophytes were recorded in tropical gramineous plants and a number of strains showed remarkable bioactive properties. The structures and absolute configurations of 1-8 were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data analyses, X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical reactions, and computer-assisted structural elucidation including 13 C NMR data calculation, residual dipolar coupling based NMR analysis, and time-dependent density functional theoryelectronic circular dichroism calculation. Plausible biogenetic pathways of two uncommon sesquiterpenoids (4 and 6) were proposed.

Recently, a novel heterozygous missense mutation c.T1421G (p. L474R) in the PODXL gene encoding podocalyxin was identified in an autosomal dominant focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (AD-FSGS) pedigree. However, this PODXL mutation appeared not to impair podocalyxin function, and it is necessary to identify new PODXL mutations and determine their causative role for FSGS. In the present study, we report the identification of a heterozygous nonsense PODXL mutation (c.C976T; p. Arg326X) in a Chinese pedigree featured by proteinuria and renal insufficiency with AD inheritance by whole exome sequencing (WES). Total mRNA and PODXL protein abundance were decreased in available peripheral blood cell samples of two affected patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared with those in healthy controls and hemodialysis controls without PODXL mutation. We identified another novel PODXL heterozygous nonsense mutation (c.C1133G; p.Ser378X) in a British-Indian pedigree of AD-FSGS by WES. In vitro study showed that, human embryonic kidney 293T cells transfected with the pEGFP-PODXL-Arg326X or pEGFP-PODXL-Ser378X plasmid expressed significantly lower mRNA and PODXL protein compared with cells transfected with the wild-type plasmid. Blocking nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) significantly restored the amount of mutant mRNA and PODXL proteins, which indicated that the pathogenic effect of PODXL nonsense mutations is likely due to NMD, resulting in podocalyxin deficiency. Functional consequences caused by the PODXL nonsense mutations were inferred by siRNA knockdown in cultured podocytes and podocalyxin down-regulation by siRNA resulted in decreased RhoA and ezrin activities, cell migration and stress fiber formation. Purpose: Although the association between anemia and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients is well established, whether hemoglobin variability (Hgb-Var) affects the prognosis remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between Hgb-Var and cardiovascular mortality in Chinese hemodialysis patients., Methods: This retrospective study included 252 patients starting hemodialysis in Xin Hua Hospital between January 2009 and December 2015. Patients were divided into three tertiles based on Hgb-Var, as reflected by SD Hgb mean , SD Hgb range , and Hgb deflection during a 12-month evaluation period after hemodialysis initiation. Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were evaluated by echocardiography. Information on cardiovascular deaths occurred by December 2017 was collected. Multivariate Cox regression models were constructed to evaluate the association between Hgb-Var and cardiovascular mortality., Results: A total of 75 deaths and 52 cardiovascular deaths occurred during the 47-month follow-up (range 29.5-70). Under multivariate regression, the subgroup with the highest Hgb-Var had a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality after adjusting for relevant factors (HR vs. lowest SD Hgb mean : 9.15, 95% CI 2.82, 29.693, P < 0.0001; HR vs. lowest SD Hgb range : 3.81, 95% CI 1.40, 10.38, P = 0.005). Per 1 SD of Hgb mean and Hgb range elevations were both related to a 10% increase in the cardiovascular mortality risk. Baseline EF% and LVMI did not differ across the Hgb-Var subgroups. EF% upon the last patient visit to the clinic was lower in the subgroup with the highest SD Hgb mean (P = 0.02)., Conclusions: High Hgb-Var is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients and might influence the cardiac function.

Chemical analysis of the Chinese marine sponge Xestospongia testudinaria afforded a library of brominated polyunsaturated lipids including eight new compounds, named xestonarienes A-H (3-10) and thirteen known analogues (11-23). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with literature data. The isolated lipids were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against pancreatic lipase (PL), an essential enzyme for efficient fat digestion and the major metabolite, 14, exhibited a marked inhibitory activity (IC50 = 3.11 μM), similar to that of the positive control Orlistat (IC50 = 0.78 μM). The preliminary structure-activity relationships on the series of compounds clearly evidenced that a terminal (E)-enyne functionality, a diyne within the chain, and methyl ester group are all key functional groups for the activity of this class of PL inhibitors. Further biological investigation on compound 14 revealed a significant decrease in the plasma triglyceride level following an oral lipid challenge in C57BLKS/J male mice. Acute toxicology study demonstrated that compound 14 was non-toxic up to 1600 mg/kg p.o in mice. This is the first report of the PL inhibitory activity for brominated polyunsaturated lipids and the obtained results qualify compound 14 as a potent and bioavailable drug candidate for a mild and safe treatment to prevent and reduce obesity., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. No prediction rule is currently available for advanced colorectal neoplasms, defined as invasive cancer, an adenoma of 10 mm or more, a villous adenoma, or an adenoma with high-grade dysplasia, in average-risk Chinese. In this study between 2006 and 2008, a total of 7,541 average-risk Chinese persons aged 40 years or older who had complete colonoscopy were included. The derivation and validation cohorts consisted of 5,229 and 2,312 persons, respectively. A prediction rule was developed from a logistic regression model and then internally and externally validated. The prediction rule comprised 8 variables (age, sex, smoking, diabetes mellitus, green vegetables, pickled food, fried food, and white meat), with scores ranging from 0 to 14. Among the participants with low-risk (≤3) or high-risk (>3) scores in the validation cohort, the risks of advanced neoplasms were 2.6% and 10.0% (P < 0.001), respectively. If colonoscopy was used only for persons with high risk, 80.3% of persons with advanced neoplasms would be detected while the number of colonoscopies would be reduced by 49.2%. The prediction rule had good discrimination (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.74, 95% confidence interval: 0.70, 0.78) and calibration (P = 0.77) and, thus, provides accurate risk stratification for advanced neoplasms in average-risk Chinese.

The incidence of transnational marriage has increased significantly in Taiwan in recent years. Children born in immigrant families are predisposed to acculturation and learning problems. We aimed to determine if the children of marital immigrants are more depressed than children from native families, and examine the individual and joint effects of various factors on their depression risk. A cross-sectional study was performed to investigate the depression status of elementary school children in MiaoLi County, Taiwan. A total of 676 participants, including 157 children from families in which the mother was an immigrant and the father native to Taiwan, were recruited from 29 schools. A modified depression scale "Depression Screen Scale for Children and Adolescents" for domestic school children was used to determine depression status. Data which might relate to depression, including demographic, family and school variables, were collected with a structured questionnaire and analyzed with multivariate and stratification methods. The results show that 20.4% of children from immigrant mother families and 17.1% of children from native families exhibited depressive symptoms. The child-parent relationship, peer relationship and academic performance in school were found by logistic regression to be the main predictors of depression in immigrant family children. With further stratification analysis, synergistic effects in immigrant families were found between child-parent relationship and family climate and between peer relationship and academic performance, raising the risk of depression in children of marital immigrants by 7.26- and 7.71-fold, respectively. This synergistic effect was not observed in native families. This study provides significant evidence of synergistic effects between family variables and school variables which increase, up to more than 7-fold, the risk of depression in children of marital immigrants. Background: This study aims to investigate brain gray matter density (GMD) changes in adolescents with Internet addiction (IA) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis on high-resolution T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance images., Methods: Eighteen IA adolescents and 15 age- and gender-matched healthy controls took part in this study. High-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed on the two groups. VBM analysis was used to compare the GMD between the two groups., Results: Compared with healthy controls, IA adolescents had lower GMD in the left anterior cingulate cortex, left posterior cingulate cortex, left insula, and left lingual gyrus., Conclusions: Our findings suggested that brain structural changes were present in IA adolescents, and this finding may provide a new insight into the pathogenesis of IA., (Copyright © 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
