Children's right to be heard is an issue raised in recent years in the Global North, which has also been acknowledged by Chinese researchers currently studying child development and education. However, Chinese researchers still often prefer the perspectives of adults in their research on young children, citing a lack of suitable methodologogy for collecting and interpreting young children's voices. This article recognises the significance of including young children's perspectives in research. It discusses how Western methodologies for listening to their perspectives, such as the Mosaic approach, can be adapted for use in Chinese socio-cultural contexts. By reflecting on the first author's research on the lived experience of leftbehind young children in a Chinese rural area, the article explores the development and implementation of such a methodology. The research findings indicate that the Mosaic approach, alongside phenomenological interviews and other research tools, provided an effective approach that enabled achievement of the research aims. Flexibility and reciprocity in relationships were two key contributors to effectiveness of this approach to research in a Chinese context.

Children throughout the world are exposed to traumatic events such as sexual or physical abuse, severe accidents, cancer or other life threatening illness, natural or man-made disasters, war, terrorism, the sudden death of a parent or close friend or relative, among other things. Recently, natural disasters have caused property damage and loss of life in locations throughout the world. This special issue summarizes interventions that have been used in the aftermath of traumatic events in diverse locations throughout the world. These include Greece (earthquakes, fires, and the H1N1 virus outbreak), Indonesia (earthquake), China (earthquake), Sri Lanka (tsunami), and the United States (hurricanes). In addition, a general discussion of empirically-based treatment approaches for children is provided. The amount and severity of childhood trauma is an issue that should concern school psychologists across the globe and the importance of including a diverse global perspective in designing and implementing interventions is stressed.

This article examines the role of education in "successful globalisation" and how this links with agendas for sustainable development. In the first part "successful globalisation" is defined as economic growth combined with equality and social peace. Japan and the East Asian tiger economies--particularly South Korea and Taiwan--have been uniquely successful in the last half century in achieving both rapid economic growth over long periods and relative income equality and social cohesion. A host of factors have been responsible for this, including fortuitous geo-political circumstances and good timing. However, education has also played a major role. The article, based on a review of international and national research literatures, analyses how far China, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka have managed to develop their own forms of successful engagement with the global economy and what part education policy has played. In the second part we relate our concept of successful globalisation to the parallel discourses of sustainable development and education for sustainable development and reflect on what our notion of "successful globalisation" can borrow from and lend to these literatures.

Trends in aquatic food consumption were matched against farm production surveys within Hubei province and compared to official production data and statistics. Surveys showed that consumer tastes were changing to a much broader aquatic food menu as their spending power increased. Traditional aquaculture species were becoming less profitable due to reduced profit margins as input costs increased and consumption preferences changed. Consequently, many producers were diversifying their production to meet local demand. Some farmers were also de-intensifying by reducing commercial aquafeed inputs and reverting to more traditional methods of dyke-crop culture to optimise trade-offs between input costs and labour, and manage their risk more effectively. In addition, analysis of local data showed that wholesale changes were occurring to aquaculture production as environmental protection legislation took effect which reduced the growing area for carps considerably. Background: Although rarely indicated, antibiotics are commonly used for acute diarrhoea in China. We conducted a randomised, double blind exploratory clinical trial of loperamide, berberine and turmeric for treatment of acute diarrhoea. Methods: Adults with acute uncomplicated diarrhoea aged 18 to 70 were randomised to 4 groups: (A) loperamide; (B) loperamide and berberine; (C) loperamide and turmeric; (D) loperamide, berberine and turmeric. All participants were given rescue ciprofloxacin for use after 48 h if symptoms worsened or were unimproved. Primary endpoints were feasibility and ciprofloxacin use during the 2-week follow-up period. Semi-structured interviews were conducted following recruitment and were analysed thematically. Recruiting doctors, delivery pharmacists and research assistants were blinded to treatment allocation. Results: Only 21.5% (278/1295) of patients screened were deemed eligible, and 49% (136/278) of these consented and were entered into the final analysis. Most participants had mild symptoms, because most patients with moderate or severe symptoms wanted to be given antibiotics. Follow-up was good (94% at 2 weeks). Only three participants used rescue antibiotics compared to 67% of acute diarrhoea patients in the hospital during the recruitment period. The median symptom duration was 14 h in group B (interquartile range (IQR) 10-22), 16 h in group D (IQR 10-22), 18 h in group A (IQR 10-33) and 20 h in group C (IQR 16-54). Re-consultation rates were low. There were no serious treatment-related adverse events. Most interviewed participants said that although they had believed antibiotics to be effective for diarrhoea, they were surprised by their quick recovery without antibiotics in this trial. Conclusion: Although recruitment was challenging because of widespread expectations for antibiotics, patients with mild diarrhoea accepted trying an alternative. Background: Diarrhea is a ubiquitous digestive system disease, leading to loss of fluid and electrolytes, and may be life-threatening, especially in children and adults who are immunosuppressed or malnourished. Berberine has a broad-spectrum antibiotic activity and is very widely used to treat diarrhea in China. No systematic review has been carried out to evaluate the evidence presented in clinical trials. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of berberine in diarrhea treatment among children and adults. Methods: Seven databases and two clinical trial registries were searched on 1 September 2019. Randomized controlled trials were included, where participants were diagnosed (first diagnosed) as having diarrhea according to clear diagnostic criteria. Berberine alone or in combination with Western medication as intervention were included. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on children or adults, acute or persistent diarrhea, infectious or noninfectious and treatment courses. Primary outcomes were clinical cure rate and duration of diarrhea. The GRADE tool was used to assess the quality of evidence. Results: A total of 38 randomized controlled trials were included involving 3948 participants (including 27 trials on 2702 children) were included. Compared with antibiotics, berberine plus antibiotics showed better results in both adults and in children in general, especially when given for 7 days or 3 days in acute infectious diarrhea of children. Compared with the control groups, using berberine alone or in combination with montmorillonite, probiotics, and vitamin B increased the clinical cure rate of diarrhea. The use of berberine alone or berberine combined with montmorillonite reduced the duration of hospitalization. Using berberine had significantly better laboratory indicators (isoenzyme, inflammatory factors, myocardial enzyme, and fecal trait) and fewer systemic symptoms than the no berberine groups. Overall, 22 of 27 trials on children used berberine as an enema. No deaths and serious adverse events were reported. The quality of evidence of included trials was moderate to low or very low. The impact of different dosages, frequencies and treatment durations on the outcomes was not evaluated due to insufficient number of trials. Conclusion: This review demonstrated that berberine was generally effective in improving clinical cure rates and shortening the duration of diarrhea compared with control groups. No severe adverse event was reported. However, there is still a lack of high-quality evidence for evaluating the efficacy and safety of berberine. China is the world's largest capture fisheries and aquaculture producer. Over recent decades, China's domestic marine catch composition has changed markedly, from large volumes of a few high‐valued food species to multiple, small, low‐valued, species, a significant proportion of which is primarily used as animal, especially fish, feed. Despite the growing volume and economic importance of the feed catches, their species composition, catch volumes and socio‐environmental impacts are all poorly understood. Based on a nationwide survey of >800 fishing vessels, and the identification and measurement of >12,000 fish and invertebrate individuals, the present study provides an overview of the feed component of China's domestic marine catch, by volumes, species and sizes, and found it to be substantial and biologically unsustainable. Half of the trawler catch (3 million metric tons, mmt), or 35% of the total catch (4.6 mmt) in China's exclusive economic zone, are now comprised of low‐valued "feed‐grade fish". The present study identified 218 fish species, 50 crustaceans and five cephalopods, and of these, 102 fish species were food species with 89% individuals in their juvenile size ranges. Feed‐grade fish were mainly used as aquaculture feed directly, or indirectly, through the feed industry after reduction to fishmeal and fish oil. The unparalleled scale and poor fisheries resource condition of China's domestic marine fisheries, in parallel with severe overfishing of juveniles, creates a demand for fundamental changes to fishery management practices, including a significant reduction of fishing effort to ensure productivity and ecosystem resilience. Abstract: Length of stay is one of the most important determinants of the overall impact of tourism in a given economy. However, due to its statistical nature and complexity such as censoring and non negativity, it is rarely systematically analyzed in economic research literature. This article estimated an econometric parametric survival analysis model to learn the determinants of length of stay, in a novel way in the tourism demand literature. In the process, a number of tourist''s socio-demographic characteristics were analyzed in order to disclose the most important factors that can contribute to the length of tourist stays. Background: Bridging the gap between science and policy is an important task in evidence-informed policy making. The objective of this study is to prioritize ways to bridge the gap.Methods: The study was based on an online survey of high-ranking scientists and policy makers who have a senior position in universities and governments in the health sector in China and Canada. The sampling frame comprised of universities with schools of public health and medicine and various levels of government in health and public health. Participants included university presidents and professors, and government deputy ministers, directors general and directors working in the health field. Fourteen strategies were presented to the participants for ranking as current ways and ideal ways in the future to bridge the gap between science and policy.Results: Over a 3-month survey period, there were 121 participants in China and 86 in Canada with response rates of 30.0 and 15.9 %, respectively. The top strategies selected by respondents included focus on policy (conducting research that focuses on policy questions), science-policy forums, and policy briefs, both as current ways and ideal ways to bridge the gap between science and policy. Conferences were considered a priority strategy as a current way, but not an ideal way in the future. Canadian participants were more in favor of using information technology (web-based portals and email updates) than their Chinese counterparts. Among Canadian participants, two strategies that were ranked low as current ways (collaboration in study design and collaboration in analysis) became a priority as ideal ways. This could signal a change in thinking in shifting the focus from the "back end" or "downstream" (knowledge dissemination) of the knowledge transfer process to the "front end" or "upstream" (knowledge generation).Conclusions: Our international study has confirmed a number of previously reported priority strategies to bridge the gap between science and policy. More importantly, our study has contributed to the future work on evidence-based policy making by comparing the responses from China and Canada and the current and ideal way for the future. This paper analyses a large dataset based on empirical non-market valuation study results reported in the USA. The dataset is used to estimate a meta-regression model that is applied to predict the corresponding recreation activity values in China. The convergent validity of the meta-analytical international benefit transfer is tested against observed recreation activity values in China. In the process, a relative percentage error indicator, paired t -test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test are used. Abstract: Survival Analysis method has been commonly used in biology, medical science, and human life insurance studies but it is rarely applied in agricultural insurance research. The main objective of this study is to explore the appropriateness of the Survival Analysis model for the crop insurance program design. Our analysis was mainly focused on the catastrophic risk premium rate estimates under the condition of 70% yield coverage for rice, corn and sorghum in Panjin of Liaoning province, China. Using the travel cost method, the authors measure the recreational trip value of Xinghai Park in Dalian, China. They compare nonlinear, truncated Poisson and truncated negative-binomial count data models to estimate recreational trip demand. The economic values of recreational trips in terms of consumer surplus (CS) are derived from each model. They estimate the CS values at between RMB ¥493 (US$64) to RMB ¥562 (US$73) per trip, resulting in a total social welfare estimate in the range from RMB ¥1.08 billion to RMB ¥1.23 billion (US$140 million to US$160 million in 2007). Abstract: Passive air sampling (PAS) was employed to study the occurrence of gaseous and particle-bound PAHs in the North Chinese Plain. The averaged concentrations of gaseous and particle-bound PAHs were 485±209ng/m3 and 267±161ng/m3, respectively. The PAHs concentrations at urban sites were generally higher than those at rural ones with ratios <1.5 in spring, summer and fall, but differences between them were not significant for the wintertime and annually averaged concentrations. This urban–rural distribution pattern was related to the PAHs emission sources. PAHs spatial variation can be partially (49%) explained by emission with a simple linear regression method. Both the gaseous and particle-bound PAHs were highest in winter and lowest in summer, with winter/summer ratios of 1.8 and 8, respectively. The article discusses the conceptual and methodological challenges of comparative economic history, focusing on recent debates concerning alternative pathways of development in Europe and Asia, the agricultural systems of early modern England and the lower Yangzi region in China, and the historical demography of Eurasia. The article concludes that such debates support the perspective that there is substantial path dependency and contingency in economic history and that alternative development paths can be discerned across and within Europe and Asia. Top coding of extreme values of variables like income is a common method of statistical disclosure control, but it creates problems for the data analyst. The paper proposes two alternative methods to top coding for statistical disclosure control that are based on multiple imputation. We show in simulation studies that the multiple-imputation methods provide better inferences of the publicly released data than top coding, using straightforward multiple-imputation methods of analysis, while maintaining good statistical disclosure control properties. Background: We sought to understand the epidemiology and characteristics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the impact of the National Action Plan (NAP) on AMR. This information will be critical to develop interventions and strengthen antibiotic stewardship in hospital settings in China. Methods: Cross-sectional data collection from the hospital information management system from 1 January 2015 to 30 August 2018. Variables included patient age, sex, diagnosis, hospital department and antibiotic sensitivity test. T-test for two samples method was applied to compare the results before and after NAP implementation. Multivariate analysis with binary logistic regression was conducted to examine the associations of risk factors for antimicrobial resistance. Results: In total there were 352,238 isolates in the final analysis after excluding contamination strains and isolates with incomplete information. More than 50% of patients were > 66 years old. 62% were male. 40% of the total samples were sputum. Among the total sample, the total resistance rate was 42% among all isolates. The rate of resistance to all antibiotics declined by 5.3% (95% CI 4.96–5.64%, p < 0.0001) and culture positivity rate declined by 9.8% (95% CI 9.22–10.34%, p < 0.0001) after NAP. Logistical regression showed that the NAP had effect with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.76 (95% CI 0.71–0.81, p = 0.002). Being male, age > 65 years, ICU department, diagnosed with certain diseases were more likely to be associated with antimicrobial resistance. Conclusions: Antibiotic resistance rates were high in this teaching hospital. However, the introduction of the China NAP since 2016 followed by hospital policy emphasis was associated with a declining AMR trend. Policies will need to incorporate antimicrobial stewardship with a focus on certain departments, with infection control practices and with increases in vaccination coverage among elderly. Objective To analyse trends and patterns in inpatient antibacterial use in China's tertiary and secondary hospitals between 2013 and 2021. Methods The analysis involved quarterly data from hospitals covered by China's Center for Antibacterial Surveillance. We obtained information on hospital characteristics (e.g. province, a de-identified hospital code, hospital level and inpatient days) and antibacterial characteristics (e.g. generic name, drug classification, dosage, administration route and usage volume). We quantified antibacterial use as the number of daily defined doses per 100 patient-days. The analysis took into account the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Access, Watch, Reserve classification of antibiotics. Findings Between 2013 and 2021, overall antibacterial use in inpatients decreased significantly from 48.8 to 38.0 daily defined doses per 100 patient-days (P < 0.001). In 2021, the variation between provinces was almost twofold: 29.1 daily defined doses per 100 patient-days in Qinghai versus 55.3 in Tibet. The most-used antibacterials in both tertiary and secondary hospitals throughout the study period were third-generation cephalosporins, which comprised around one third of total antibacterial use. Carbapenems entered the list of most-used antibacterial classifications in 2015. The most frequently used antibacterials in WHO's classification belonged to the Watch group: usage increased significantly from 61.3% (29.9/48.8) in 2013 to 64.1% (24.4/38.0) in 2021 (P < 0.001). Conclusion Antibacterial use in inpatients decreased significantly during the study period. However, the rising proportion of last-resort antibacterials used is concerning, as is the large gap between the proportion of antibacterials used belonging to the Access group and WHO's global target of no less than 60%.
