Six corroded glazed pottery figurines, which excavated from the Qibi Ming Tomb of the Tang Dynasty in Xianyang, were selected to study the corrosion mechanism. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDS), Energy X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX), and micro-Raman spectroscopy were applied to analyze the pristine composition of the glaze layer and pottery substrate, the composition and microstructure of corrosion products. The results indicate that lead-glazed pottery figurines are low-temperature PbO-CaO-SiO2 glaze, with Pb as the main flux, and Cu, Fe as the main colorant. The corrosion products include PbCO3, CaCO3, PbCO3·PbCl2, PbCl2, PbO2, and Si-rich layer. There are Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus sclerotiorum on the surface of glazed pottery. These microorganisms produce organic acids and mold spots on the surface of the pottery figurines, which in turn cause corrosion pits to form on the surface of the figurines. Chemical corrosion reactions mainly include dissolution–precipitation, combination reaction, and oxidation reaction. This article describes the corrosion process of lead-glazed pottery figurines and establishes corresponding corrosion models. Some painted pottery figurines were excavated from the tomb of Qibi Ming of the Tang Dynasty. A series of analytical techniques were employed to understand the craftsmanship of these painted pottery figurines. The pigment, cross-section, adhesive, and firing temperature were analyzed using microscopy (OM), energy X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and a dilatometer (DIL). The results demonstrated that the surface of the pigment layers had degraded to different degrees. The pigment particles were litharge, gypsum, malachite, cinnabar, hematite, minium, white lead, and carbon black. The cross-sectional images show that the painted layer of figurines 10-0966 and 10-0678 included a pigment layer and a preparation layer. The preparation layer of both pigments was lead white. Animal glue was used as an adhesive. The firing temperature of the pottery figurines was likely 1080 °C. This study can provide more accurate information with regard to the composition of the raw materials utilized in the making of these artifacts and support the selection of appropriate substances for the purposes of conservation and restoration of the painted pottery figurines. Background: Ibrutinib has revolutionized the treatment of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Both ibrutinib monotherapy and ibrutinib‐based combination therapy are important salvage options for patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) MCL. The real‐world efficacy and safety profile of the two strategies in Chinese patients with R/R MCL remain unclarified. Methods: In the present study, data of 121 R/R MCL patients who received either ibrutinib monotherapy (N = 68) or ibrutinib combination therapy (N = 53) in 13 medical centers in China were retrospectively reviewed. Results: With a median follow‐up of 20.5 months, the overall response rate was 60.3% versus 84.9% (p = 0.003), complete remission rate was 16.2% versus 43.4% (p < 0.001), and median progression‐free survival (PFS) was 18.5 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 12.1–21.8) vs. 30.8 months (95% CI, 23.5‐NR) (hazard ratio, 0.53 [95% CI, 0.30–0.93]; p = 0.025), with ibrutinib monotherapy and ibrutinib‐based combination therapy, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that patients with male gender, no refractory disease, Ki67 <30%, previous line of therapy = 1, non‐blastoid subtype, and the number of extranodal sites involved <2 might benefits more from the combination therapy. Treatment‐emergent adverse events were similar, except for a higher incidence of all grade neutropenia in the ibrutinib combination group (12.7% vs. 32.0%, p = 0.017). Conclusions: Ibrutinib combination therapy demonstrated potentially superior efficacy and comparable tolerability to ibrutinib monotherapy. Drought has been approved to affect the process of terrestrial ecosystems from different organizational levels, including individual, community, and ecosystem levels; however, which traits play the dominant role in the resistance of plant to drought is still unclear. The experiment was conducted in semi-arid temperate grassland and included six paired control and drought experimental plots. The drought treatment was completely removed from precipitation treatments from 20 June to 30 August 2013. At the end of the growing season in 2013, we removed the rain cover for ecosystem recovery in 2014. The results demonstrated that drought treatment increased the coverage of and abundance Heteropappus altaicus, Potentilla bifurca, and Artemisia scoparia by 126.2–170.0% and 63.4–98.9%, but decreased that of Artemisia frigida, Dontostemon dentatus, and Melissilus ruthenicu by 46.2–60.2% and 49.6–60.1%. No differences in coverage and abundance of Agropyron cristatum, Stipa kiylovii, and Cleistogenes squarrosa were found between control and drought treatment. The coverage and abundance of Stipa kiylovii have exceeded the original level before the drought stress, but Heteropappus altaicus still had not recovered in the first year after the disturbance. Our findings indicate that plant functional traits are important for the understanding of the resistance and resilience of plants to drought stress, which can provide data support for grassland management. In order to effectively conserve a species and manage its population, it is critical to understand the impact of climate change on habitat quality and connectivity. The sika deer (Cervus nippon) is a ungulate species endemic to East Asia and listed as a Category I State Key Protected Wild Animals under Chinese law. The C. nippon population was established in the Shennongjia area 30 years ago, and there is an urgent need to analyse the impact of environmental change on habitat quality. In this study, we compared suitable habitats and habitat connectivity of C. nippon in the Shennongjia area by utilizing an ecological niche model that integrated a set of environmental factors combined with a cost-distance approach for both the present time as well as in the future. The most encouraging findings were that the suitable habitat for C. nippon may be obviously enlarged and its habitat connectivity obviously improved under climate change. The suitable habitat of C. nippon in the Shennongjia area is limited at present; however, it is possible that the total area and number of suitable habitat patches can increase twenty- to thirty-fold and quadruple to sextuple, respectively, in the future (2050–2070). We detected a clear trend of suitable future habitat expansion into the northeast. The number of interpatch least-cost paths may dramatically increase (up to six to twelve times higher), and the lengths of least-cost paths and movement costs for the deer may decrease by half. Based on these results, several conservation recommendations have been suggested. Our study provides a valuable reference for protective actions that can be taken to conserve C. nippon in the Shennongjia area and can serve as a template for establishing conservation strategies for other species. Qingzhuan tea (QZT) is classified as compressed dark tea and has been an essential daily commodity for ethnic minority communities in China's border areas. It boasts unique flavor characteristics and health benefits, captivating the attention of consumers both domestically and internationally. However, the QZT industry's historical closed nature and lengthy processing cycle have impeded a comprehensive scientific understanding and evaluation of this tea, as well as hindered the overall healthy development of the industry. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the research progress on QZT, covering defluoridation techniques, processing technology, flavor characteristics, chemical composition, microbial communities, health benefits, and their underlying mechanisms. A technology system aimed at reducing fluoride levels in tea, known as "appropriate fertilization-selection of low-fluorine tea tree varieties-control of raw material tenderness and growing period," has been proposed. Through the implementation of specific processing techniques, QZT exhibiting an orange-red infusion color, a mellow taste, and an aged aroma. During the key pile fermentation process, microorganisms release extracellular enzymes that initiate enzymatic and moist heat reactions, resulting in oxidation, hydrolysis, polymerization, and secondary metabolic conversions. These reactions serve as the underlying foundation for the distinctive sensory attributes of QZT. The regulation of microorganisms plays a vital role in attaining the desired flavor of QZT. Moreover, QZT encompasses a diverse array of bioactive constituents, which offer numerous health advantages such as antioxidative properties, anti-obesity and anti-diabetes effects, modulation of the intestinal microbiota, and alleviation of non-alcoholic fatty liver. • A systematic approach to reduce fluoride in tea is proposed. • Specific techniques are used to create Qingzhuan tea (QZT) with vibrant color, taste and aroma. • The role of microorganisms in developing QZT's sensory traits is revealed. • Diverse bioactive compounds in QZT for health benefits are highlighted. Background: Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is featured with a poor survival outcome. China has approved chidamide, an oral novel histone deacetylase inhibitor, for patients diagnosed with relapsed or refractory PTCL. Objective: We compared the benefit of traditional chemotherapy alone and a combination of chidamide and traditional chemotherapy against newly diagnosed PTCL. Prognostic factors related to progression and survival in patients diagnosed with untreated PTCL were also investigated. Methods: 104 patients with newly diagnosed PTCL were enrolled and divided into chemotherapy (ChT) group and chemotherapy combined with chidamide (ChT+C) group. Survival curves were plotted by the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analysis were conducted with Log-rank test and Cox's proportional hazard regression. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to evaluate factors associated with prognostic differences between ChT and ChT+C groups. Results: Compared with patients in ChT group, those in ChT+C group had superior progression-free survival (PFS) (p =0.047). However, there was no significantly statistical difference observed between the two groups in overall survival (OS) (p =0.212). High IPI scores have a negative relationship with survival. Multivariate analysis revealed that the type of frontline treatment regimen is an independent factor associated with PFS of PTCL patients (p =0.045). In the subgroup of patients with high international prognostic index scores (3-5), the HR value for PFS comparing ChT with ChT+C was 4.675. A test of interaction between IPI and treatment showed statistical significance (p = 0.037), implying that the benefits of ChT+C are higher for patients with high IPI scores. Background: We aimed to analyse the oral health status of adolescents in Shandong province, including dental caries and gingivitis, and their associated factors. Methods: Adolescents aged 12–15-years in Shandong province were recruited. Caries and gingival status were assessed following the World Health Organisation diagnostic criteria. Information including the sociodemographic, oral hygiene knowledge, attitudes and practices were collected through the questionnaire. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to investigate the oral diseases associated factors. Results: In total, 3868 students (50.2% males) were enrolled. Of these, 39.9% of the participants experienced caries, and 81.7% and 31.3% had calculus and bleeding gingival, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that there was an association between dental caries and toothaches, dental visits and sleeping troubles caused by oral problems (P < 0.024). A low-frequency of brushing, high sugar consumption and no flossing were more associated with calculus formation and gingival bleeding (P < 0.008). Conclusion: Compared to caries, worse gingival condition was more prevalent among adolescents in Shandong province. Brushing behaviour is associated with gingivitis, while dental visits and toothaches are associated with caries. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between family management and asthma control in children with asthma. Design and Methods: This cross‐sectional descriptive study recruited 142 children with asthma and their parents. We used the Family Management Measure (FaMM), the Childhood Asthma Control Test (C‐ACT), and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) detectors to assess family management and asthma control. The McNemar's test was used to determine the proportional difference between C‐ACT and FeNO in evaluating asthma control. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to assess the relationship between family management and asthma control in children with asthma. Results: There was no significant difference in the proportion of C‐ACT and FeNO in evaluating asthma control (McNemar's test p =.593). Child's Daily Life, Condition Management Ability, and Parental Mutuality were positively correlated with C‐ACT (r = 0.398 to 0.655; all p <.05) and negatively correlated with FeNO (r = −0.245 to −0.402; all p <.05); Condition Management Effort, Family Life Difficulty, and View of Condition Impact were negatively correlated with C‐ACT (r = −0.416 to −0.672; all p <.05) and positively with FeNO (r = 0.248 to 0.427; all p < 0.05). Child's Daily Life, Condition Management Effort, and View of Condition Impact dimensions significantly predicted the C‐ACT results, and the Condition Management Effort and View of Condition Impact dimensions significantly predicted the FeNO results (p <.05). Practical Implications: Pediatric nurses could provide family management education for parents to improve asthma control in children. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the efficacy and toxicity of high‐dose methotrexate plus temozolomide (MT regimen) and rituximab plus MT (RMT regimen) in patients with untreated primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). A total of 62 patients with untreated PCNSL were enrolled between January 2005 and December 2015, with the median age of 53.5 years (range 29‐77).In this study, 32 patients received RMT as induction therapy, and 30 received MT. Objective responses were noted in 93.7% of the patients in the RMT group and in 69.0% of the patients in the MT group (P = 0.018), while complete responses were noted in 53.2% of the patients in the RMT group and 27.6% of the patients in the MT group (P < 0.001). The 2‐ and 5‐year PFS rates were 81.3% and 53.3%, respectively, for the RMT group and 46.5% and 29.1%, respectively, for the MT group (P = 0.019). The 2‐ and 5‐year overall survival (OS) rates were 82.3% and 82.3%, respectively, for the RMT group and 65.7% and 50.0%, respectively, for the MT group (P = 0.015). Multivariate analyses showed that therapeutic regimen (RMT vs MT) was an independent prognostic factor for PFS and OS. Our encouraging results suggest that the RMT regimen may be a feasible and safe therapeutic approach for first‐line treatment of PCNSL. Vincetoxicum hainanense is an endangered liana species endemic to China. Habitat destruction coupled with difficulties in natural pollination has reduced its population size over time. As present studies have focussed more on breeding programmes instead of molecular aspects, here we reported on the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of V. hainanense. The cp genome is 161,280 bp in size and includes two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 24,884 bp each, which is separated by a large-single copy (LSC) region of 92,084 bp and a small-single copy (SSC) region of 19,428 bp. A total of 131 genes were predicted, including 37 tRNA, 8 rRNA, and 86 protein-coding genes. • Childhood emotional neglect is a risk factor of adolescent depression. • Maladaptive self-cognition is a potential explanatory factor underlying this relation. • Friendship quality plays a moderating role, with the effect being stronger for adolescents with lower levels of friendship quality. It has become the responsibility of the whole society to protect adolescents from depression. Based on an integration of attachment theory and stress-buffering model, the present study aimed to examine (a) whether childhood emotional neglect (CEN) would be significantly associated with depression; (b) whether maladaptive self-cognition would mediate the association between CEN and depression; and (c) whether friendship quality would moderate the direct and indirect associations between CEN and depression via maladaptive self-cognition. Participants were 1639 Chinese adolescents (M age = 14.49 years, SD = 1.11). They completed questionnaires regarding demographics, CEN, maladaptive self-cognition, and friendship quality at Time 1. After 7 months, they finished the measure of depression at Time 2. Results showed that CEN was positively associated with adolescent depression, and this relation was mediated by maladaptive self-cognition. Furthermore, friendship quality moderated the association between CEN and maladaptive self-cognition, with the relation being stronger for adolescents with lower levels of friendship quality. However, friendship quality did not moderate the association between maladaptive self-cognition and depression, as well as the direct association between CEN and depression. Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is characterized by an aggressive clinical behavior. Chidamide has been approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory (R/R) PTCL in China. We compared the efficacy of chidamide-contained regimens with chemotherapy (ChT) in R/R PTCL. Based on the second-line treatments, patients were divided into three groups, including ChT, ChT combined with chidamide (chidamide + ChT) and chidamide combined with or without other targeted agents (targeted therapy) group. Chidamide + ChT group had a better progression-free survival (PFS) compared with targeted therapy group (p = 0.013), and showed a trend towards superior PFS compared with ChT group (p = 0.079). Among patients with high second-line International Prognostic Index (IPI) (3-5), chidamide+ChT group had a longer PFS than ChT group(p = 0.018), and PFS in targeted therapy group was not inferior to that in chidamide+ChT group (p = 0.200). Among patients younger than 60 years, chidamide+ChT group demonstrated a PFS benefit over targeted therapy group (p = 0.010). Among CD30-negative patients, PFS was superior in the chidamide+ChT group compared with ChT group (p < 0.001). Conversely, results observed above were absent in patients with low second-line IPI or patients older than 60 years or CD30-positive patients. Water infiltration in the soil is a crucial hydrological function in the land water cycle, especially in the semiarid region where water is relatively scarce. The semiarid grassland in Northern China represents the regional vegetation in the vast area of Eurasian continent and is sensitive to land use change. However, no clear patterns exist regarding the comprehensive examination of water infiltration in relation to clipping across six plant community sites. This study aimed to test the effect of clipping and plant community sites, which were dominated by Agropyron cristatum, Stipa krylovii, Leymus chinensis, Potentilla tanacetifolia, Artemisia frigida, or Lespedeza davurica, on the water infiltration rate in the semiarid grassland. Clipping significantly decreased the water initial, steady, and average infiltration rates by 39.13, 4.36, and 12.46 mm h -1 , respectively, across the six plant community sites. Clipping-induced changes in the average infiltration rate positively correlated with the changes in the plant cover (r = 0.60, P < 0.01), litter mass (r = 0.53, P < 0.01), forb functional group ratio (r = 0.46, P = 0.03), and total porosity (r = 0.49, P = 0.02), and negatively with water-holding capacity (r = -0.45, P = 0.03). Further, the water infiltration rate significantly differed among the six plant community sites. The L.davurica site had the highest water initial infiltration rate with a value of 137.63 ± 17.76 mm h -1 , while the L. chinensis site had the lowest rate with a value of 74.08 ± 5.26 mm h -1 . Principal component analysis showed that the total porosity, litter mass, plant cover, and forb functional group ratio were the main factors affecting water infiltration rates in the control grassland. To analyze the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice about COVID-19 among Chinese residents, noninterventional and anonymous survey was carried out with an online questionnaire. Among the survey respondents (n = 619), 59.9% were female, 61.1% were from 18 to 30 years of age, and 42.3% held an undergraduate's degree. The mean scores for each scale were as follows: perceived knowledge (36.3 ± 6.1), attitude (29.4 ± 4.7), practice (44.1 ± 4.8), total score (109.7 ± 13.2), barrier (0.2 ± 0.7), and cognition and behavior change score (8.5 ± 1.4). Perceived knowledge, attitude, practice, total score, and cognition and behavior changes were significantly and positively correlated, whereas barrier was negatively correlated with those scales (P < 0.001). Linear regressions revealed that those respondents who were medical professionals, civil servants, employees of state-owned enterprises and public institutions, and had relatively higher level of education were associated with a higher perceived knowledge score, attitude score, practice score, and total score. Higher mean cognition and behavior change score was associated with company employees (8.8 ± 1.3). More than half of the respondents (51.4%) were optimistic about the government's interventional measures. The respondents in China had good knowledge, positive attitude, and active practice toward COVID-19, yet, it is advisable to strengthen nationwide publicity and focus on the target undereducated population by means of We-Chat, microblog, website, and community workers for better control effect.

A novel actinobacterial strain (TRM 68085 T ) was isolated from soil of Populus euphratica wetland. A polyphasic approach was used to study the taxonomy of TRM 68085 T and the results showed a range of phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TRM 68085 T showed the highest similarity value to Streptomyces capitiformicae 1H-SSA4 T (98.6 %), and phylogenetically clustered with Streptomyces kanasensis ZX01 T (97.5 %) and Streptomyces ipomoeae NBRC 13050 T (97.4 %). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain TRM 68085 T based on the genome sequence was 71.4 mol%. The levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between the genome of the isolate and its nearest phylogenetic neighbours, S. capitiformicae 1H-SSA4 T , S. kanasensis ZX01 T and S. ipomoeae NBRC 13050 T , were 19.2±0.4, 21.8±0.5 and 19.3±0.6 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain TRM 68085 T possessed MK-9(H 6 ) and MK-9(H 8 ) as the predominant menaquinones. ll-Diaminopimelic acid and a small amount of meso -diaminopimelic acid were the diagnostic diamino acids. Ribose, xylose, glucose and galactose were the whole-cell sugars. The major cellular fatty acids were C 16 : 0 (25.4 %) and iso-C 16 : 0 (18.3 %). On the basis of these genotypic and phenotypic data, it is concluded that strain TRM 68085 T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces arboris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TRM 68085 T (=CCTCC AA2019031 T =LMG 31492 T ).

Background: Severe asthma is a chronic disease contributing to disproportionate disease morbidity and mortality. From the year of 2007, many genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have documented a large number of asthma-associated genetic variants and related genes. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanism of these identified variants involved in asthma or severe asthma risk remains largely unknown., Methods: In the current study, we systematically integrated 3 independent expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) data (N = 1977) and a large-scale GWAS summary data of moderate-to-severe asthma (N = 30,810) by using the Sherlock Bayesian analysis to identify whether expression-related variants contribute risk to severe asthma. Furthermore, we performed various bioinformatics analyses, including pathway enrichment analysis, PPI network enrichment analysis, in silico permutation analysis, DEG analysis and co-expression analysis, to prioritize important genes associated with severe asthma., Results: In the discovery stage, we identified 1129 significant genes associated with moderate-to-severe asthma by using the Sherlock Bayesian analysis. Two hundred twenty-eight genes were prominently replicated by using MAGMA gene-based analysis. These 228 replicated genes were enriched in 17 biological pathways including antigen processing and presentation (Corrected P = 4.30 × 10 - 6 ), type I diabetes mellitus (Corrected P = 7.09 × 10 - 5 ), and asthma (Corrected P = 1.72 × 10 - 3 ). With the use of a series of bioinformatics analyses, we highlighted 11 important genes such as GNGT2, TLR6, and TTC19 as authentic risk genes associated with moderate-to-severe/severe asthma. With respect to GNGT2, there were 3 eSNPs of rs17637472 (P eQTL  = 2.98 × 10 - 8 and P GWAS  = 3.40 × 10 - 8 ), rs11265180 (P eQTL  = 6.0 × 10 - 6 and P GWAS  = 1.99 × 10 - 3 ), and rs1867087 (P eQTL  = 1.0 × 10 - 4 and P GWAS  = 1.84 × 10 - 5 ) identified. In addition, GNGT2 is significantly expressed in severe asthma compared with mild-moderate asthma (P = 0.045), and Gngt2 shows significantly distinct expression patterns between vehicle and various glucocorticoids (Anova P = 1.55 × 10 - 6 )., Conclusions: Our current study provides multiple lines of evidence to support that these 11 identified genes as important candidates implicated in the pathogenesis of severe asthma.

Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects adults and children. The most common subtype is psoriasis vulgaris. This article analyzes the characteristics and clinical features of children with psoriasis vulgaris to strengthen the understanding, treatment, and management for children with psoriasis., Methods: A total of 208 children with psoriasis vulgaris, who were first admitted to the Department of Dermatology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University from October 2012 to December 2018, were retrospectively analyzed. Their clinical characteristics, results of laboratory examination, treatment options and efficacy were summarized., Results: The age of the 208 children with psoriasis vulgaris was (11.19±3.97) years old, the peak incidence was 12 years old, the disease duration was (27.46±31.30) months, and the male-female ratio was 1∶0.96. The most common site of the first attack was the scalp (37.98%), followed by the trunk (26.44%) and the limbs (22.12%). The causes leading to exacerbation were more common in infections and diets. There were 33 patients (15.87%) with a family history of psoriasis, showing the higher score of Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and the higher Dermatological Quality of Life Index (DLQI) (both P <0.05). In all patients, 29 cases (13.94%) were overweight, 19 cases (9.14%) were obese, and the rate of overweight and obesity in children with psoriasis vulgaris was higher than that of normal children in China. In the laboratory test, the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-VD) were decreased in most patients (47.5%), and the serum 25-OH-VD levels were found to be moderately negatively correlated with PASI score ( P <0.05). The score of DLQI in the patient was 5.56±3.57, the score of PASI was 7.25±6.83, and they were positively correlated ( r =0.409, P <0.001). In most patients (72.11%), the severity of the disease was mild to moderate. Their treatment was often dominated by topical drugs and Chinese patent medicine (65.67%). Retinoids showed a good effect on children. Cyclosporine and methotrexate were effective in more severe cases., Conclusions: Children with psoriasis vulgaris are mainly caused by infection and diet. Patients with family history have more serious illness, lower quality of life, and are more likely to have metabolic abnormalities such as overweight and obesity. The serum 25-OH-VD levels in children with psoriasis vulgaris are negatively correlated with the score of PASI.

Biomanipulation of filter-feeding bivalves or fish can serve as complementary measures to zooplankton manipulation approach in lakes dominated by large-sized algae. A laboratory grazing experiment was conducted to compare the selective grazing of benthic bivalves (Hyriopsis cumingii) and planktivorous fish (silver carp) on particle size and algae species. Their combination grazing effects were also detected. The results showed that the clearance rates of silver carp were higher than that of H. cumingii, and that silver carp preferred particles in the 30-50 and 50-100 μm size fraction whereas H. cumingii did not show a significant selective grazing on seston size. Furthermore, the differences between the selective grazing of H. cumingii and silver carp on algae species were detected. Some algae species, which had not been digested well by silver carp, were not detected in H. cumingii's pseudofeces. Similarly, some algal species in the pseudofeces of bivalves were not detected in the feces of fish. Moreover, the combined clearance rates of H. cumingii and silver carp (ranging from 12.14 to 95.99 mL g DW -1  h -1 ) were higher than that of single filter feeder (0.47 to 10.18 mL g DW -1  h -1 ). We suggest therefore that when using biomanipulation measures to control large-sized algal overgrowth, a combination of different filter feeders may be a better way considering their collaborative grazing in both particle size and algae species selectivity.

The potential effects of the interactions between DNA methylation (CpG1 and CpG2-5 methylation levels) of the α-adducin (ADD1) gene promoter and ADD1 tagSNPs (tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms) or the environmental factors on essential hypertension (EH) risk have not been clarified. Thus, we performed an age- and gender-matched case-control study to investigate the association between ADD1 tagSNPs and EH. A total of 1020 subjects with EH and 1020 normotensive subjects were genotyped by melting temperature shift technology. Logistic regression was used to assess the associations of ADD1 tagSNPs, environmental factors and EH. The generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) method was applied to explore the potential interactions. Under additive, dominant and recessive models, no significant associations were evidenced between EH and rs3755885, rs2071694, rs4963 or rs3775067 with the complete data set or the gender-stratified analysis after adjusting for triglycerides, body mass index and alcohol consumption. However, we observed a significant association between rs4961 and EH under the dominant model after Bonferroni correction when adjusting for confounding factors in the entire sample (odds ratio (OR)=0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.50-0.83, P=0.001). In GMDR, the two-factor interaction model of alcohol consumption and DNA methylation (CpG1 methylation) was the best model, with a maximum cross-validation consistency of 9/10 and testing balance accuracy of 0.63 (P=0.01). Our results indicate that the SNP rs4961 has a protective role in the development of EH. In conclusion, the interactions between alcohol consumption and DNA methylation (CpG1 methylation) of the ADD1 gene promoter have a significant role in modifying EH susceptibility.

Background: The GCK gene encodes hexokinase 4, which catalyzes the first step in most glucose metabolism pathways. The purpose of our study is to assess the contribution of GCK methylation to type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Methods and Results: GCK methylation was evaluated in 48 T2D cases and 48 age- and gender-matched controls using the bisulphite pyrosequencing technology. Among the four CpG sites in the methylation assay, CpG4 and the other three CpGs (CpG1-3) were not in high correlation (r<0.5). Significantly elevated methylation levels of GCK CpG4 methylation were observed in T2D patients than in the healthy controls (P=0.004). A breakdown analysis by gender indicated that the association between CpG4 methylation and T2D was specific to males (P=0.002). It is intriguing that another significant male-specific association was also found between GCK CpG4 methylation and total cholesterol (TC) concentration (r=0.304, P=0.036)., Conclusion: Our results showed that elevated GCK CpG4 methylation might suggest a risk of T2D in Chinese males. Gender disparity in GCK CpG4 methylation might provide a clue to elaborate the pathogenesis of T2D., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)
