Abstract: Climate change during the Quaternary played an important role in the distribution of extant plants. Herein, cone scales of Cedrus (Pinaceae) were uncovered from the Upper Pliocene Sanying Formation, Longmen Village, Yongping County of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. Detailed comparisons show that these fossils all belong to the genus Cedrus (Pinaceae), and a new species is proposed, Cedrus angusta sp. nov. This find expands the known distribution of Cedrus during the Late Pliocene to Yunnan, where the genus no longer exists in natural forests. Based on the analysis of reconstructed Neogene climate data, we suggest that the intensification of the East Asian winter monsoon during the Quaternary may have dramatically increased seasonality and given rise to a much drier winter in Yunnan. Combined with information on Cedrus fossil records and its seed physiology, we conclude that the intensification of a drier climate after the Late Pliocene may have prevented the survival of Cedrus seedlings, leading to the eventual disappearance of Cedrus in western Yunnan. This study indicates that the topography in southwestern China acted as a vital refuge for many plants during the Quaternary, but that other species gradually disappeared due to the intensification of the monsoonal climate. Abstract: Proxy-based quantitative estimates of Eocene climates can be made from marine isotope records for ocean conditions or fossil plants for terrestrial environment. However, our understanding about Eocene terrestrial climates is derived mainly from North America and Europe, and little is known about East Asia. Previous qualitative paleoclimate studies briefly revealed three climatic regimes across China during the Eocene with a planetary wind-dominated subtropical to tropical arid zone in the central part (i.e., the subtropical highs), which was flanked by the subtropical climate zone in the north and tropical climate zone in the south. But such a pattern of paleoclimatic zonation still requires a test from quantitative study. Based on analyses of 66 plant assemblages, carefully selected from 37 fossil sites throughout China, we here report the first large-scale quantitative climatic results and discuss the Eocene climatic patterns in China. Our results demonstrate that the Eocene monsoonal climate must have been more or less developed over China, judging from the presence of apparent seasonality of both temperature and precipitation revealed by our quantitative estimation. This appears not to support the previously claimed Eocene planetary wind-dominated climate system, at least in the region of eastern China. In addition, the research indicates that, with a slight declining trend of MAT during the Eocene, the winter temperature substantially dropped in tropical southern China during the middle to late Eocene interval. This might be related to the development of a weak Eocene Kuroshio Current in the southwestern Pacific, and/or a significantly enhanced paleo-winter monsoon from Siberia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Continental Paleogene climates have been well studied in Europe and North America, but very little is known from Asia because paleoclimatic results have only been reported from particular geological intervals. Here, based on 29 plant assemblages from 8 well age-controlled fossiliferous sites, we quantitatively reconstruct the climates through most of the Paleogene of northeast China and discuss related seasonal variations. Our results demonstrate that the mean annual temperature (MAT) gradient was fairly shallow (0.27°C/1° latitude) during the Paleocene throughout this region. In the Eocene, seasonality was high in the region, indicated by marked differences in both temperature and precipitation between winters and summers of the sites. The paleo-East Asian monsoon must have had intensified at least in the late mid Eocene, shown by apparent differences in annual precipitation distribution at all the sites. Regarding the Paleogene climatic evolution of northeast China, our quantitative results suggest that MAT overall declined from warm in the Paleocene and Eocene to moderate in the Oligocene, generally consistent with the trend of marine records but with some distinctions. Two significant cooling events are recognized in the early and mid Eocene with MAT 3.4°C and 3.8°C lower, and winter temperature 5.8°C and 4.7°C lower, respectively, in similar magnitudes to corresponding variations in Europe and North America. Furthermore, the present results show that MAT rebounded in the late mid Eocene and then decreased until the Oligocene, a similar pattern demonstrated in Europe during the mid Eocene to Oligocene interval. Abstract: The Miocene climate evolution in North China is preliminarily discussed by means of comparisons in seven climate parameters quantitatively reconstructed by the Coexistence Approach on 34 selected macro- and microfloras over North China. The Miocene temperatures show no great difference in the western and eastern part of North China. Temperature fluctuations, particularly in mean annual temperature, are found within floras from several sites. The fluctuation pattern, from a climate optimum in the Mid Miocene to cooling decline in the Late Miocene, is generally consistent with the global trend of Miocene temperature change. The reconstructed precipitation from all the sites studied shows much wetter conditions in North China during the Miocene than at present, which corroborates the results from paleoprecipitation proxy of fossil mammals. Like the situation in paleo-temperature, the Miocene precipitation from North China shows no distinct difference between the western and eastern regions. It is suggested that North China, particularly in the western part, was by no means under an arid or semi-arid environment during the Miocene. North China is an ideal region for study of the impact of the East Asian monsoon system, however, the pattern of precipitation change derived from the monsoon index (MSH) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) shows contradictory results. Therefore, there appears no definite conclusion on when the East Asian summer monsoon intensified. Possible reasons for inconsistency in temperature and precipitation changes are discussed. Abstract: Pinus prekesiya Xing, Liu et Zhou sp. nov. was described as a new species on the basis of two well preserved ovulate cones from the upper Miocene of central Yunnan, southwestern China. It is the first fossil record of three dimensionally preserved Pinus ovulate cones from China. Morphological comparisons with 15 previously published Cenozoic cones and seven related extant pine species reveal that the fossil cones are identified as a new species, P. prekesiya sp. nov., which belongs to subsection Pinus of subgenus Pinus. The new species shows a combination of characters of P. kesiya and P. yunnanensis, but has a closer affinity with P. kesiya which occurs in the humid region of Yunnan and therefore suggests a more humid climate in central Yunnan during the late Miocene than today. The general cooling trend during the late Neogene and topographic change due to the dramatic Tibetan uplift might have caused a vicariant origin of P. kesiya and P. yunnanensis from the ancestral P. prekesiya. A newly discovered fossil pollen taxon is described as Lagerstroemia cathayensis sp. nov. on the basis of a combination of morphological characters including prolate shape with no or weakly developed pseudocolpi and rugulate-verrucate tectum. The fossil pollen was recovered from a Miocene deposit in Zhejiang province, eastern China. It resembles pollen of extant Lagerstroemia subcostata Koehne and L. limii Merrill, both species still occurring near the fossil site in Zhejiang province and further extending into other regions of southern China, Japan, India and the Philippines. This record represents the only description of Cenozoic pollen grains of the genus Lagerstroemia from East Asia examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The occurrence of Lagerstroemia together with some temperate plants (i.e. Keteleeria, Acer, Carpinus, Fagus) at the fossil site suggests that the climate in eastern China during the Miocene was similar to that of today. China faces the dual challenge of mitigating climate change and preventing air pollution. The coordinated control of both problems has become an issue of widespread concern. This study combined environmentally extended input-output analysis and structural path analysis to analyze the CO 2 , SO 2 , NOx, black carbon, and PM 2.5 emissions embodied in the production supply chain of China in 2012. The results showed that electricity and heat production, nonmetallic mineral products along with the smelting and pressing of metal were primary sources of environmental emissions from the production perspective, and construction contributed 20–38% relevant emissions from the consumption perspective. Among the 100 largest paths, 22 common critical paths accounted for 16–37% of relevant emissions, meaning that measures focusing on these shared paths will have obvious co-controlling effects. These 22 critical supply chains were mainly driven by fixed capital formation and exports. The dominant sectors included the construction, electricity and heat production, transportation and storage, and construction-materials production (nonmetallic mineral products, smelting and pressing of metal). Therefore, measures from the production-side and the consumption-side should be given equal attention to effectively co-control such emissions. Measures to decrease energy intensity, thus reducing end-of-pipe discharge in these sectors, rather than to remove specific pollutants, represent the most promising production-related measures. Moreover, slowing construction growth by guiding investments and encouraging the use or export of products with lower emissions using environmental information labels are essential consumption-related policies. • Consumption-driven CO 2 , NO x , PM 2.5 , SO 2, and BC emissions are reported. • Twenty-two common critical paths contributed relatively high emissions. • Dominant drivers and sectors in common critical paths were discerned. • Co-control policies must consider both production- and consumption-based emissions. Abstract: Twenty-one fossil foliage, identified as Fokienia shengxianensis sp. nov. (Cupressaceae), were collected from the upper Miocene Shengxian Formation in Tiantai and Ninghai counties, Zhejiang Province of eastern China. These fossils can likely be distinguished from other extant genera in the family Cupressaceae s.l. except Fokienia by leaf external morphology alone. Foliar cuticular comparison with the only modern species in this genus, Fokienia hodginsii Henry et Thomas, further suggests that the present fossil species closely resembles the modern counterpart. Paleoecologically, the occurrence of Fokienia from the Shengxian Formation appears to support that the fossil site was covered by subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest and under warm and humid conditions during the late Miocene, consistent with evidence from previously published fossil plants. Abstract: A new species of fossil endocarp is described from the Sanying Formation of the upper Pliocene at Fudong Village, Lanping County of northwestern Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The endocarps are elliptic, ovate or oblong elliptic, 2.1–2.5mm long and 1.2–1.7mm wide. The dorsal face is convex and the ventral is concave or more flattened. The endocarp surface is loosely, transversely or sinuously furrowed and ridged, forming a reticulate and alveolate pattern on the ridges, and the inner wall of the surface cells on the ridges is flaky and scaly. They are morphologically compared with selected extant genera of Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae. The interspecific comparisons show diagnostic differences of the fossil endocarps from the selected modern species and other fossil taxa, supporting their recognition as a new species: Sambucus alveolatisemina Huang, Liu et Zhou, sp. nov. Previous records of the reliable Sambucus fossils were from mid-high latitude regions in Europe, northeastern Asia and northern North America. Therefore, it is interesting to note that S. alveolatisemina represents a fossil record from a low latitude region. Sambucus apparently has existed at low latitudes in China at least since the upper Pliocene. A review of other Sambucus fossil occurrences indicates that plants of this genus have been living at higher latitudes in the geological past than they are at present. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Neogene climates and vegetation history of western Yunnan are reconstructed on the basis of known fossil plants using the Coexistence Approach (CA) and Leaf Margin Analysis (LMA). Four Neogene leaf floras from Tengchong, Jianchuan and Eryuan in southwestern China are analyzed by the CA, and the paleoclimatic data of one Miocene carpoflora from Longling and three Pliocene palynofloras from Longling, Yangyi and Eryuan are used for comparison. The Miocene vegetation of the whole of West Yunnan is subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest, and a similar mean annual precipitation is inferred for Tengchong, Longling and Jianchuan. However, by the Late Pliocene a large difference in vegetation occurred between the two slopes of Gaoligong Mountain, western Yunnan. The region of Tengchong retained a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation, whereas in Yangyi and Eryuan a vertical vegetation zonation had developed, which consists, in ascending order, of humid evergreen broad-leaved, needle and broad-leaved mixed evergreen, and coniferous forests. Distinctively, the Late Pliocene vegetational patterns of West Yunnan were already very similar to those of the present, and the Pliocene mean annual precipitation in Tengchong was markedly higher than that of Yangyi and Eryuan. Considering that the overall vegetation of West Yunnan and the precipitation at Yangyi and Eryuan have undergone no distinct change since the Late Pliocene, we conclude that the Hengduan Mountains on the northern boundary of West Yunnan must have arisen after the Miocene and approached their highest elevation before the Late Pliocene. Furthermore, the fact of the eastern portion of the Tibetan Plateau underwent a slight uplift after the Late Pliocene is also supported. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The late Miocene Xiaolongtan megaflora from Kaiyuan in southeast Yunnan (23°48′45″N, 103°11′52″E, 1050 m a.s.l.) was chosen for palaeoclimatic reconstruction using three quantitative techniques, i.e. the Coexistence Approach (CA), Leaf Margin Analysis (LMA), and the Climate–Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP). The reconstructed climatic parameters are also compared with those of the two adjacent Miocene floras currently available in Yunnan, i.e. the early to middle Miocene carpological Mangdan flora (24°24′N, 97°49′E, 1620 m a.s.l.) and the late Miocene Lühe palynoflora (25°10′N, 101°22′E, 1930 m a.s.l.). Quantitative analyses of the Xiaolongtan flora supports the previous qualitative results of a southern, humid subtropical climate, being more humid and having a slightly higher mean annual temperature (MAT) than today. The MATs calculated by CA, LMA, and CLAMP overlap (16.7–19.2 °C, 22.3±2.05 °C, 18.1±1.2 °C, respectively) and are close to the present day value (19.7 °C). The overlapping of temperatures derived using the three techniques is unusual and probably related to the low latitude of the Xiaolongtan area and the southern subtropical nature of its vegetation. Both the mean temperatures of the warmest month (WMT) and of the coldest month (CMT) reconstructed by CA (WMT=25.4–26.0 °C, CMT=7.7–8.7 °C) and CLAMP (WMT=25.9±1.6 °C, CMT=10.8±1.9 °C) are similar to those of today (WMT=24.3 °C, CMT=12.8 °C), but great changes appear in the mean annual precipitation (MAP). The CLAMP results suggest a higher precipitation (1964±335.9 mm) than CA (1215–1639 mm), but they are much higher than the present MAP (820.5 mm). This is consistent with results from the Lühe palynoflora, which also developed under a warmer subtropical climate with higher precipitation (803.6–1254.7 mm) than that of today (815.9 mm). In contrast, the Mangdan flora, situated in a more complicated topographic region to the west of Xiaolongtan and near the Sino-Myanmar border, implies a slightly lower precipitation (1170–1300 mm) than that of today (1300–1400 mm). Overall, the wetter climate during the late Miocene around the Xiaolongtan area suggests that the Himalayas had not yet uplifted to its present altitudes at that time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Eight fossil leaves identified as Exbucklandia tengchongensis sp. nov. (Hamamelidaceae) were collected from the Pliocene Mangbang Formation in Tengchong, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The fossil leaves are characterized by the overall rounded lamina with entire margin, actinodromous venation, and cyclocytic stomata, which suggest the affinity within the genus Exbucklandia, particularly with E. populnea. A survey on the cuticles of the sun and shade leaves of modern E. populnea indicates that the shade leaves generally possess more pronounced undulate anticlinal cell walls and a much lower stomatal density than the sun leaves. Two morphotypes, i.e. sun vs. shade types, of the fossil leaves were therefore recognized. The distribution of the modern Exbucklandia suggests that the genus lives under a warm climate with a mean annual temperature (MAT) from 13 °C to 27 °C and a mean annual precipitation (MAP) from 800 mm to 2500 mm. Hence, E. tengchongensis might also live under a similar climatic condition in the Pliocene. Leaf margin analysis on the Tengchong flora supports this result. Abstract: Quercus praedelavayi Xing Y.W. et Zhou Z.K. sp. nov. is reported from the upper Miocene of the Xianfeng flora in central Yunnan, southwestern China. The fossil species is identified based on the detailed leaf morphological and cuticular examinations. The primary venation is pinnate and the major secondary venation is craspedodromous with regular spacing. Stomata are anomocytic and occur on abaxial epidermis. Trichome bases are unicellular and multicellular. The new fossil species shows the closest affinity with Quercus delavayi, an extant species distributing in southwestern China. The responses of the functional leaf traits to the climate change were studied by comparing the leaf characters of fossil species and its nearest living relative. The stomatal density of Q. praedelavayi is higher than Q. delavayi, which suggests a lower palaeoatmospheric CO2 concentration during the late Miocene. The trichome base density of Q. praedelavayi is higher than the extant Q. delavayi. Considering the palaeoclimatic reconstruction of Xianfeng flora, it rejected the hypothesis that increase in trichome density is an adaptation to the drier environment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Miocene Lincang leaf assemblage is used in this paper as proxy data to reconstruct the palaeoclimate of southwestern Yunnan (SW China) and the evolution of monsoon intensity. Three quantitative methods were chosen for this reconstruction, i.e. Leaf Margin Analysis (LMA), Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP), and the Coexistence Approach (CA). These methods, however, yield inconsistent results, particularly for the precipitation, as also shown in European and other East Asian Cenozoic floras. The wide range of the reconstructed climatic parameters includes the Mean Annual Temperature (MAT) of 18.5–24.7°C and the Mean Annual Precipitation (MAP) of 1213–3711mm. Compared with the modern Lincang climate (MAT, 17.3°C; MAP, 1178.7mm), the Miocene climate is slightly warmer, wetter and has a higher temperature seasonality. A detailed comparison on the palaeoclimatic variables with the coeval Late Miocene Xiaolongtan flora from the eastern part of Yunnan allows us to investigate the development and interactions of both South Asian and East Asian monsoons during the Late Miocene in southwest China, now under strong influence of these monsoon systems. Our results suggest that the monsoon climate has already been established in southwest Yunnan during the Late Miocene. Furthermore, our results support that both Southeast Asian and East Asian monsoons co-occurred in Yunnan during the Late Miocene. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new species and a key to eleven species of of the genus Conophyma Zobovsky, 1898 from China is described in this paper. The new species Conophyma lini sp. nov. is similar to C. xiai Zhang et al, 2015, but differs from latter by: vertex longer, apex narrower; minimum width of interspace 1.6 times length in mesosternum; posterior margin of epiproct waved, with angular projection in the middle, furculae small and width of Epiphallus 2.5 times high. Background: Before human MII oocytes are vitrified they are usually denuded from their cumulus cells. In this study we wanted to investigate the effects of an intact corona radiata on the vitrification and fertilization of human oocytes., Methods: The study comprised two different parts. In Part 1, 36 MII stage oocytes, from 6 patients, were randomly assigned into a control group, a group of vitrified-warmed oocytes without a corona radiata and a group of vitrified-warmed oocytes with an intact corona radiata. In each group of 12, 6 oocytes were used for evaluation of the zona pellucida solubility (hardening) and another 6 oocytes were used for the analysis of their ultrastructure. In addition, six polyspermically fertilized oocytes were used as positive controls for zona pellucida hardening. In Part 2, 16 patients in total produced 107 fresh and 98 vitrified-warmed oocytes, with or without an intact corona radiata. All oocytes were fertilized via conventional IVF and embryos were transferred according to our standard ET routines. The oocyte survival and fertilization rates, embryo quality and pregnancy and implantation rates were evaluated., Results: There were no differences in oocyte survival, zona pellucida solubility (hardening) or the number of cortical granules between the vitrified-warmed and fresh oocytes. There were also no differences in the zona pellucida solubility and the number of cortical granules between vitrified-warmed oocytes with or without an intact corona radiata. However, the oocytes with an intact corona radiata had a higher fertilization rate after conventional IVF insemination. No differences were seen in the survival and cleavage rates, the percentage of high-quality embryos or the clinical outcome., Conclusions: Zona hardening and ultrastructural damage do not seem to occur in vitrified human oocytes. An intact corona radiata in vitrified-warmed oocytes retains their fertilization capacity in conventional IVF, but does not improve the embryo quality. Poor fertilizing capacities of vitrified-warmed oocytes without an intact corona radiata seem to have been due to the complete removal of the cumulus cells.
