Research Findings: Low-socioeconomic status (SES) (intervention group, n = 31; control group, n = 32) and middle/high-SES (reference group, n = 33) 5-year-old Chinese kindergartners were screened through SES and IQ test. Their number sense was examined over five time points. The pretest was conducted at the beginning of the fall semester, followed by three immediate posttests monthly. Math play training was administrated to the intervention group and story reading to the other two groups during this time. Lastly, a delayed posttest was conducted two months later after the last immediate posttest. All the interventions were carried out in small groups, 15-30 minutes sessions, 2 days per week for 12 weeks. The promotion effect of math play training was monitored based on response to intervention (RtI) paradigm. Utilizing latent growth modeling, we found that the intervention group got significant improvement in number sense and almost caught up with the middle/high-SES group after training, and the intervention effects persisted for two months. The control group had the slowest rate of progress and significantly lower scores than the other two groups. Practice or Policy: RtI-based mathematical game intervention could improve the number sense level and growth rate of preschoolers in rural areas.

Five stems of rapeseed with abundant black microsclerotia were collected from Huangyuan County of Qinghai Province, China, and fungal isolates were obtained from the stems. They were identified based on morphology, molecular features and specific PCR detection. The results showed that the 10 fungal isolates belonged to Verticillium longisporum lineage A1/D3. One of the 10 isolates (HW7-1) was tested for virulence on three species of rapeseed, including B. napus Zhongshuang 9, B. rapa Qingyou 9 and B. juncea Tayou 2 by conidia inoculation of HW7-1 on roots of young seedlings. Control seedlings were inoculated with V. dahliae conidia or water alone. The seedlings of these treatments were transplanted in culture mix and incubated in a growth chamber (20 ℃). Results suggested that the control seedlings of three cultivars appeared quite healthy, while the seedlings inoculated with HW7-1 turned yellowing leaves, seedling stunting or even death after 22 days post-inoculation. V. longisporum was re-isolated from he yellow leaves, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. Moreover, compared to the control treatments, inoculation with HW7-1 caused flowering delay and seed yield reduction on Tayou 2 with production of microsclerotia on the stems. Edible fungi are not only delicious but are also rich in nutritional and medicinal value, which is highly sought after by consumers. As the edible fungi industry continues to rapidly advance worldwide, particularly in China, the cultivation of superior and innovative edible fungi strains has become increasingly pivotal. Nevertheless, conventional breeding techniques for edible fungi can be arduous and time-consuming. CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9) is a powerful tool for molecular breeding due to its ability tomediate high-efficiency and high-precision genome modification, which has been successfully applied to many kinds of edible fungi. In this review, we briefly summarized the working mechanism of the CRISPR/Cas9 system and highlighted the application progress of CRISPR/Cas9- mediated genome-editing technology in edible fungi, including Agaricus bisporus, Ganoderma lucidum, Flammulina filiformis, Ustilago maydis, Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus ostreatus, Coprinopsis cinerea, Schizophyllum commune, Cordyceps militaris, and Shiraia bambusicola. Additionally, we discussed the limitations and challenges encountered using CRISPR/Cas9 technology in edible fungi and provided potential solutions. Eucommia ulmoides Oliver is a typical dioecious plant endemic to China that has great medicinal and economic value. Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-level female genome of E. ulmoides obtained by PacBio and Hi-C technologies. The size of the female genome assembly was 1.01 Gb with 17 pseudochromosomes and 31,665 protein coding genes. In addition, Hi-C technology was used to reassemble the male genome released in 2018. The reassembled male genome was 1.24 Gb with the superscaffold N50 (48.30 Mb), which was increased 25.69 times, and the number of predicted genes increased by 11,266. Genome evolution analysis indicated that E. ulmoides has undergone two whole-genome duplication events before the divergence of female and male, including core eudicot γ whole-genome triplication event (γ-WGT) and a recent whole genome duplication (WGD) at approximately 27.3 million years ago (Mya). Based on transcriptome analysis, EuAP3 and EuAG may be the key genes involved in regulating the sex differentiation of E. ulmoides. Pathway analysis showed that the high expression of ω-3 fatty acid desaturase coding gene EU0103017 was an important reason for the high α-linolenic acid content in E. ulmoides. The genome of female and male E. ulmoides presented here is a valuable resource for the molecular biological study of sex differentiation of E. ulmoides and also will provide assistance for the breeding of superior varieties. Taxi-out time is the main performance index to evaluate the operational efficiency of major airports. Scientifically and accurately predicting the taxi-out time of departure flights is very important to improve the operational efficiency and coordination decision-making ability of airport. Firstly, the quantifiable influence factors of taxi-out time and their correlation is analyzed, including the number of departure flights, the number of arrival flights, the number of flights pushed back in the same period, the taxi-out time by half-hour in average, the taxi distance, and the number of turns, etc. And then a prediction model of departure flights' taxi-out time based on BP is constructed. Because the traditional BP neural network is sensitive to the initial weight and threshold and has poor accuracy and stability, the taxi-out time prediction model of BP neural network optimized by intelligent algorithm is proposed. Genetic algorithm (GA) and sparrow search algorithm (SSA) are used to obtain the optimal weight and threshold of BP neural network, which is verified by the actual operation data of a major airport in central and southern China for two weeks. The results show that ① the taxi-out time is strongly correlated with the airport surface traffic flow, moderately correlated with the average taxi-out time, and weakly correlated with the taxi distance and the number of turns. ② The predicted outcome of the 4-element combination prediction model which considers strong correlation and medium correlation factors is the best. After adding weak correlation factors, the prediction accuracy is reduced. ③ By obtaining the local optimal weight and threshold of neural network, intelligent optimization algorithm can effectively improve the accuracy of departure flights' taxi-out time prediction results. ④ The prediction result of BP neural network optimized based on GA is 1.79% higher than that of MAPE before optimization, MAE is reduced by 7.4 s, and RMSE is reduced by 6.93 s. The prediction result of BP neural network optimized based on SSA is 3.05% higher than that of MAPE before optimization, MAE is reduced by 16.55 s, and RMSE is reduced by 14.31 s. River regulations and changing land management practices are generally perceived to be the dominant drivers of river flood changes in countries with rapid economic growth, such as China. Here, we demonstrate based on the most comprehensive flood database to date, that climate variations dominate the spatial pattern of changes in annual flood peak discharge in China, despite intense human alterations of the river and land systems over the past four decades. Regional flood increases are mainly associated with increasing precipitation due to changes in the East Asian Summer Monsoon, tropical cyclones and the subtropical westerly jet. Regional flood decreases are due to decreased soil moisture in the North China plain. Our results highlight the need for flood management policies to go beyond local measures and adapt to the effects of climate change. Understanding the reasons of changes in this hazard is a prerequisite for managing the associated risks efficiently. Potential reasons include climate change, river regulations and changing land management practices. Background. Quantitativereal-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction is the common method to quantify relative gene expression. Normalizating using reliable genes is critical in correctly interpreting expression data from qRT-PCR. Euscaphis konishii is a medicinal plant with a long history in China, which has various chemical compounds in fruit. However, there is no report describing the selection of reference genes in fruit development of Euscaphis konishii. Methods. We selected eight candidate reference genes based on RNA-seq database analysis, and ranked expression stability using statistical algorithms GeNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper and ReFinder. Finally, The nine genes related to the anthocyanin synthesis pathway of Euscaphis konishii were used to verify the suitability of reference gene. Results. The results showed that the stability of EkUBC23, EkCYP38 and EkGAPDH2 was better, and the low expression reference genes (EkUBC23 and EkCYP38) were favourable for quantifying low expression target genes, while the high expression reference gene (EkGAPDH2) was beneficial for quantifying high expression genes. In this study, we present the suitable reference genes for fruit development of Euscaphis konishii based on transcriptome data, our study will contribute to further studies in molecular biology and gene function on Euscaphis konishii and other closely related species. The present study aimed to investigate the molecular etiology of nonsyndromic hearing impairment (HI) in hearing impaired populations of Hui, Tibetan, and Tu ethnicities in northwest China. A total of 283 unrelated subjects with HI who attended special education schools in northwest China were enrolled in the present study. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in three common deafness‑related genes, gap junction protein β2 (GJB2), solute carrier family 26 member 4 (SLC26A4) and mitochondrially encoded 12S RNA (mtDNA12SrRNA), were detected using a SNPscan technique. GJB2 mutations were detected in 14.89% of Hui patients, 9.37% of Tibetan patients and 11.83% of Tu patients. The most prevalent GJB2 mutation in the Hui and Tu patients was c.235delC. In the Tibetan patients, the c.109G>A SNP exhibited the highest allele frequency. SLC26A4 mutations were detected in 10.64% of Hui patients, 6.25% of Tibetan patients, and 8.6% of Tu patients. The most common SLC26A4 mutation was c.919‑2A>Gin the Hui, Tibetan, and Tu patients, and the second most common SLC26A4 mutations in these patients were c.1517T>G, c.1226G>A andc.2168A>G, respectively. The mutation rates ofmtDNA12SrRNA in the Hui, Tibetan, and Tu patients were 1.06, 5.21, and 5.38%, respectively. These findings demonstrate that the mutation spectra of these deafness‑related genes are unique amongst these three ethnic groups. Background: Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder in Chinese population, which affects more than 1,3 billion individuals. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no available Chinese-language version of measurements of shoulder pain and disability so far. Moreover, the Constant-Murley score (CMS) questionnaire is a universally recognized patient-reported questionnaire for clinical practice and research. The present study was designed to evaluate a Chinese translational version of CMS and subsequently assess its reliability and validity.Methods: The Chinese translational version of CMS was formulated by means of forward-backward translation. Meanwhile, a final review was carried out by an expert committee, followed by conducting a test of the pre-final version. Therefore, the reliability and validity of the Chinese translational version of CMS could be assessed using the internal consistency, construct validity, factor analysis, reliability and floor and ceiling effects. Specifically, the reliability was assessed by testing the internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and test-retest reliability (intraclass coefficient correlation [ICC]), while the construct validity was evaluated via comparison between the Chinese translational version of CMS with visual analog scale (VAS) score and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36, Spearman correlation).Results: The questionnaire was verified to be acceptable after distribution among 120 subjects with unilateral shoulder pain. Factor analysis had revealed a two-factor and 10-item solution. Moreover, the assessment results indicated that the Chinese translational version of CMS questionnaire harbored good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.739) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.827). In addition, the Chinese translational version of CMS was moderately correlated with VAS score (r = 0.497) and SF-36 (r = 0.135). No obvious floor and ceiling effects were observed in the Chinese translational version of CMS questionnaire.Conclusion: Chinese translational version of CMS exhibited good reliability, which is relatively acceptable and is likely to be widely used in this population. Background: Improvement of quality of life has been one of goals in health care for people living with bladder cancer. Meanwhile, positive psycho-social variables in oncology field have increasingly received attention. However, the assessment of quality of life of bladder cancer patients and the integrative effects of positive psycho-social variables has limited reporting. The aim of this study was to assess quality of life as well as the integrative effects of social support, hope and resilience on quality of life among Chinese bladder cancer patients.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the First Hospital of China Medical University in Liaoning Province, China. A total of 365 bladder cancer patients eligible for this study completed questionnaires on demographic variables, FACT-BL, Perceived Social Support Scale, Adult Hope Scale, and Resilience Scale-14 during July 2013 to July 2014.Results: The average score of FACT-BL was 87.60 ± 16.27 (Mean ± SD). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that social support, hope and resilience as a whole accounted for 30.3 % variance of quality of life. Under standardized estimate (β) sequence, social support, hope and resilience significantly and positively associated with quality of life, respectively.Conclusions: Quality of life for bladder cancer patients was at a low level in China, which should receive more attention in Chinese medical institutions. More importantly, efforts to increase social support, hope and resilience might be useful to support the quality of life among Chinese bladder cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper studies the correlation between species richness and productivity under different scales using soil water content in Qinghai Lake region, and the research results show that soil water content has negative correlation with species richness under community scales and positive one with productivity; while in different types of vegetations, soil water content has obvious negative correlation with species richness and positive one with productivity. Plantations cover large areas in many countries, and the enhancement of plantation biodiversity is an increasingly important ecological concern. Many studies have demonstrated that overstory composition is important because it influences understory regeneration. To compare the understory vegetation and analyze its determinant factors, six typical plantations in South China were investigated: Acacia mangium plantation, Schima superba plantation, Eucalyptus citriodora plantation, E. exserta plantation , mixed-coniferous plantation, and mixed native species plantation. The results show that native species plantations shaded out more grasses and herbs than exotic species plantations, mixed-species plantations recruited more understory species than monoculture plantations, the leguminous species plantation had higher soil nitrogen than nonleguminous species plantations, and understory vegetation in the mixed-coniferous plantation was similar to that of mixed, native broadleaf species plantation. Although light is the crucial environmental factor affecting the understory community and diversity among the 14 measured factors, other environmental variables such as soil nutrients and soil moisture are also important. The article presents a study on the association of aromatic amino acids and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) with future diabetes in China. Serum insulin was determined through radioimmunoassay, while hexokinase enzymatic method determined plasma glucose levels. The study shows that patients with type II diabetes (T2D) had higher fasting levels of plasma of tyrosine, alanine, isoleucine and valine.

Background: Loricrin keratoderma is a rare early-onset autosomal dominant skin disorder. At present, no clinical reports have been published on characteristics of progressive aggravation and late-onset., Objectives: To identified a new-found pedigree with c.323 G>C mutation leading to progressive aggravation and late-onset loricrin keratoderma., Methods: Targeted next-generation sequencing of 267 genes associated with all skin abnormalities, sanger sequencing, and bioinformatics tools were used to identify the mutation in this new-found pedigree. Palm skin biopsy was used to observe the clinicopathological features of patient. Further, we constructed pcDNA3.1/V5-His-wild-LORICRIN, pcDNA3.1/V5-His-c.323G>C-LORICRIN, and pcDNA3.1/V5-His-730insG-LORICRIN vectors, nucleofected into HaCaT strain to observe the subcellular localization of loricrin by using the laser scanning confocal microscopy., Results: The proband and his affected father carried a heterozygous c.323 G>C missense mutation (p.Gly108Ala) on LORICRIN. Bioinformatics analysis hinted that it had potential pathogenicity; the types of ligands, enzyme commission active sites, and the spatial structure of protein changed enormously. Laser scanning confocal microscopy showed that the signals from cells transfected with the pcDNA3.1/V5-His-730insG-LORICRIN vector were distributed mainly in the nucleus, whereas those from cells transfected with the pcDNA3.1/V5-His-c.323G>C-LORICRIN vector were mainly located in the cytoplasm. Wild type loricrin was distributed in the nucleus and cytoplasm homogeneously CONCLUSION: The heterozygous c.323G>C missense mutation on LORICRIN caused late-onset and progressive loricrin keratoderma in this large Chinese family. Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) in the detection of the sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) at our prenatal diagnosis centre., Methods: Among a cohort of 34,717 pregnancies, maternal plasma samples from our prenatal diagnosis centre were subject to analysis of SCAs using NIPT detection. Pregnant women with NIPT positive results of SCAs were recommended to undergo an invasive prenatal diagnosis (i.e. karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization) to validate the prediction value of NIPT., Results: From 34,717 clinical pregnancies, 229 (0.66%) pregnancies were identified with SCAs. Of these, 78 (34.1%) cases were positive for 45,X and 151 (65.9%) cases comprised a sex chromosome trisomy. Of the 229 positive NIPT results, 193 (84.3%) cases had accepted an invasive diagnosis involving karyotyping analysis of the amniotic fluid, which confirmed 67 cases (34.7%) as true positive, as well as 126 cases (65.3%) as false positive. The positive predictive values were 23.07%, 50%, 36% and 27.27% respectively. The remaining 36 (15.7%) cases declined a prenatal diagnosis. The termination rates of 45,X, 47,XXY, 47,XXX and 47,XYY were 20.5%,46%,12.9% and 11.5% respectively., Conclusions: NIPT demonstrated a lower accuracy in predicting monosomy X than sex chromosome trisomies. After invasive testing, the fetal chromosome with 45,X and 47,XXY were terminated more often than those with 47,XXX, 47,XYY. Because NIPT is a screening test, false positive/negative cases exist, and pre- and post-test counselling is essential for informing patients about the benefits and limitations of the test. Objective: To characterize the prevalence and species/genotypes of Cryptosporidium spp. in farmed pigs in the north of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province., Methods: A total of 500 samples of pig feces were obtained from seven largescale pig farms in the north of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province. PCR and sequences analysis of the small subunit rDNA gene were used to detect and identify the Cryptosporidium species/genotypes., Results: The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium was 4.8% (24/500). Additionally, Cryptosporidium prevalence was 40.0% in Qianshan and 6.3% in Chuzhou, respectively. No Cryptosporidium infection was found in other sampling areas. The DNA sequence analysis of the SSUrDNA gene revealed that all of the isolates represented C. scrofarum . The Cryptosporidium infection rate (9.1%) of pigs (> 60 days) was significantly higher than the rates of both pigs (< 30 days) and pigs (30-60 days) (both P < 0.01)., Conclusions: C. scrofarum in the farmed pigs in the north of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province may be a source of Cryptosporidium infection and pose a potential public health threat to humans and other animals, and therefore, the status should be paid more attention to.

Deficiency of steroid 11β-hydroxylase activity occurs in 5-8% of patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The aim of the current study was to identify mutations in the CYP11B1 gene of a patient with CAH due to deficiency of steroid 11β-hydroxylase activity, and to study the functional and structural consequences of these mutations. A molecular genetic analysis of the CYP11B1 gene in this patient and her parents identified a known missense mutation g.5194G>C (p.D63H) and a novel 2 bp deletion mutation (g.9525&#95;9526delCT, corresponding to p.L380V…R420X) in the patient. In vitro expression studies in COS7 cells revealed a decreased 11β-hydroxylase activity in the p.D63H mutant to 2.0±0.8% and in the p.L380V…R420X mutant to 0.2±2.2% for the conversion of 11-deoxycortisol to cortisol. Three dimensional homology models for the normal and mutant proteins were built by using the recently published x-ray structure of the human CYP11B2 as a template. Presumably, the g.9525&#95;9526delCT mutation in CYP11B1 resulted in a truncated protein with a misfolded C-terminal domain that could not efficiently bind heme iron, substrate, and adrenodoxin and had lost its biochemical function. In summary, CAH due to steroid 11β-hydroxylase deficiency can be attributed to both the novel deletion mutation (g.9525&#95;9526delCT, corresponding to p.L380V…R420X) and known missense mutation (g.5194G>C corresponding to p.D63H) in CYP11B1.

Background: This study aimed to illustrate the characteristics of suicide attempters treated in the Emergency Departments of 7 general hospitals in Xi'an and to provide relevant data for early psychological treatment., Material and Methods: Between October 2010 and September 2014, 155 suicide attempters were treated in the Emergency Departments. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariate analyses were used to identify the factors associated with suicidal behaviors., Results: Females outnumbered males at a ratio of 3.7 to 1. The greatest proportion of cases was in the age group of 21 to 30 years (52.9%). Patients who finished middle school or high school accounted for most of the suicide attempters (50.3%). The most common method used for attempted suicide was drug ingestion (86.5%). The majority of cases attempted suicide at home (74.8%) during the night. Marriage frustration, work and study problems, family fanaticism and conflict, somatic disease, and history of mental disorders were all significantly associated with suicide attempts. The ratio of patients to be discharged or to die were similar in occupation, marital status, and the place of suicide attempt; however, the results were different in gender, age, educational level, methods used for suicide, time of day, and reason., Conclusions: Suicide is an important public health problem and is multidimensional in nature. Future studies with larger samples are expected to provide more specific knowledge of the effect of each social factor on the suicide risk in Chinese in order to improve the prevention of suicides.

Objective: To detect chromosomal imbalance in a fetus with complex congenital heart disease, and to correlate the genotype with the phenotype., Methods: Routine G-banding was carried out to analyze the karyotypes of the fetus and its parents, and single nucleotide polymorphisms array (SNP-array) was used for delineating fine genomic aberrations. The detected aberrations were confirmed with multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA)., Results: The fetus and its parents all showed a normal karyotype, while array-SNP has detected a 13.87 Mb duplication at 4p16.3-p15.33 and a 15.65 Mb deletion at 11q23.3-q25 in the fetus. The results were confirmed by the MLPA assay., Conclusion: The partial trisomy 4p (Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome) and partial monosomy 11q (Jacobsen syndrome) probably underlie the complex heart defects detected in the fetus. Analysis of the karyotypes of its parents offered no help for the determination of the aberrant type and recurrent risk. Compared with routine karyotype analysis, aberrant regions can be identified with array-SNP with greater resolution and accuracy. This has provided useful information for prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling.

The study of this study is to assess the current status and trend of the application of breast reconstruction in China.A retrospective review of all patients who had received surgical treatment for breast cancer in the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center between January 1999 and June 2014 was performed. The clinicopathological and epidemiological parameters and the follow-up information of each patient were collected.A total of 20,551 patients with 20,974 surgeries were identified. Of those, the rates of patients received mastectomy, breast conserving therapy, and breast reconstruction were 81.2% (17,040 cases), 15.3% (3216 cases), and 3.4% (718 cases), respectively. Skin-sparing mastectomy with autologous breast reconstruction was algate the dominant option for breast reconstruction although a rapid growth in the application of prosthetic reconstructions was observed in recent years. The rates of complications that required reoperation in patients reconstructed with latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, pedicled transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap, free flaps, and prosthesis were 1.2%, 8.5%, 11.4%, and 10.5%, respectively, while the revision rates were 0.7%, 6.1 %, 5.3%, and 2.3%, respectively. Multiple regression analysis confirmed that types of surgery did not affect the disease-free survival of breast cancer patients.Skin-sparing mastectomy with breast reconstruction is oncologically safe while achieving satisfactory aesthetic outcomes. Autologous reconstruction remains the most commonly used technique while there is a rapid increase of prosthetic reconstruction in recent years. The low demand for breast aesthetics among Chinese women, defects of healthcare system, and the limited availability of recourses impeded the development of breast reconstruction techniques in China.

Background: The strong predilection for thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) to occur in males suggests androgen may contribute to its pathogenesis. We therefore sought to determine if serum total and free testosterone (TT and FT) concentrations differed among patients with TPP during episodes of paralysis, patients with TPP between episodes of paralysis, and patients with Graves' disease (GD) not having TPP., Methods: A total of 105 Chinese men were included in the study, and were divided into three groups. Group 1 consisted of men with TPP who were studied during episodes of paralysis; group 2 consisted of men with TPP who were studied between episodes of paralysis; group 3 consisted of men with GD not having TPP. Patients in each were different persons. Serum electrolytes, free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), TT, and FT were measured. Multiple regression analyses and analysis of covariance were performed to analyze the relationship of serum parameters, group status, and age., Results: One multiple regression analysis was used to determine if serum TT concentrations were associated with age, FT3, FT4, or group status. This analysis indicated that age, FT4 level, and group status were significantly and independently associated with serum TT concentrations. With regard to group status, patients in group 1 had serum TT concentrations 0.92 ng/mL higher than patients in group 3 (p=0.033). As to FT4 level, TT concentrations increased by 0.016 ng/mL for each additional pmol/L of FT4 (p=0.002). Another multiple regression analysis was used to determine if serum FT concentrations were associated with age, FT3, FT4, group status, or serum TT concentrations. This analysis revealed that serum TT concentrations and group status were significantly and independently associated with serum FT concentrations. In terms of group status, patients in group 1 had serum FT concentrations of 2.11 pg/mL greater on average than patients in group 3 (p=0.006)., Conclusions: We infer that episodes of paralysis in Chinese men with TPP are associated with elevated serum testosterone. We also found serum TT and FT concentrations of men with GD are both affected by group status; serum TT rather than FT concentrations are associated with thyroid function.

Background: Overweight and obesity are considered a serious health problem. There are little data on the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the Yi ethnic group in China. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiologic features of overweight/obesity among Chinese Yi nationality., Methods: A cross-sectional study, including 1255 subjects aged 20-75 years, was carried out in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan province from 2007 to 2008. Overweight/overall obesity was defined by World Health Organization (WHO) or the Working Group on Obesity in China., Results: Overall, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 19.0% and 2.9%, respectively, based on the WHO definition, while it was 21.0% and 7.4%, respectively, according to the Working Group on Obesity in China, which is similar to data reported in the 2002 Chinese National Nutrition and Health Survey. Urban residents had a significantly higher prevalence of obesity (WHO criteria: 4.3% vs 1.7% p = 0.008; China criteria: 11.4% vs 3.7%, p < 0.001) and overweight (WHO criteria: 28.9% vs 8.9% p < 0.001; China criteria: 31.2% vs 10.4%, p < 0.001) than that in rural residents. Older age, a family history of obesity, higher income, drinking and urban residence were significantly associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity., Conclusions: The prevalence of overweight/obesity in the Yi nationality is similar to that in Chinese adults 5 years ago. However, urban residents have a much higher prevalence of overweight/obesity than their rural counterparts. Lifestyle and diet patterns associated with socioeconomic status may explain the difference between urban and rural residents. The prevention of overweight/obesity among urban inhabitants deserves more attention in national health education programs.

Objective: To search for new potential diabetogenic mtDNA defects by scanning mtDNA genome in mitochondrial DNA diabetes (MDM) pedigrees., Methods: Blood samples were collected from the family members in two suspected MDM pedigrees, which were both maternal transmitted and early-onset diabetes. The whole mtDNA genome except D-loop was detected by direct sequencing in probands of these two diabetic pedigrees. Novel mutations displayed by direct sequencing were then screened in 200 normal glucose tolerant controls and 100 early-onset diabetic patients., Results: We found a novel nt14319T --> C mutation in No. 2 pedigree, but no pathogenic mutation was found in No. 1 pedigree. The mutation of nt14319T --> C, which not being reported previously, locate in the region of ND6 subunit, causing amino acid change (asparagine --> aspartic acid). The frequencies of 14319T/C substitution in 100 early-onset diabetic patients and 200 control subjects were 6% and 5%(P > 0.05)., Conclusion: A novel mutation 14319T --> C was identified in No. 2 pedigree. All three diabetic family members in this pedigree haboured 14319T --> C mutation, indicating that it may be the major pathogenic mutation for this family.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of glycemic excursions in people with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) in Chengdu., Methods: A total of 50 non-obese people with normal glucose tolerance (NGT, 23-68 years old), normal blood pressures and lipid profiles participated in the study. The fluctuations of glucose levels in the participants were measured by a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) for three days 72 h. The 48 h mean blood glucose (MBG), mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE), Largest amplitude of glycemic excursions (LAGE), Postprandial peak glucose (PPG), Postprandial glucose excursion (PPGE), Mean of postprandial glucose excursion (MPPGE), and absolute means of daily differences (MODD) were measured., Results: The number of glucose values detected by CGMS amounted to 861+/-7 with a mean absolute difference (MAD) of 11.3%+/-10.6%. The CGMS values were significantly correlated with the capillary glucose measurements (n=1076, r=0.761, P<0.005). The participants had a MBG of (5.9+/-1.2) mmol/L, a MAGE of (1.7+/-0.7) mmol/L, a LAGE of (4.4+/-1.9) mmol/L, a daily glycemic peak (PPG) of (8.7+/-1.7) mmol/L, a nadir level of (4.3+/-0.7) mmol/L, a MPPGE of (2.3+/-1.6) mmol/L, and a MODD of (0.75+/-0.79) mmol/L. The post-breakfast Postprandial glycemic excursions (PPGE) were lower than those of post-lunch and post-dinner (P=0.01 and P=0.05). The postprandial glucose excursions in the 60-70 year-old participants were the highest (P<0.022). In 95% (77%-100%) of the daytime, the glycose levels fluctuated between 4.1 and 8.8 mmol/L, and 78% of the participants (n=39) had hyperglycemia (BG>7.8 mmol/L) and 10% (n=5) had asymtomatic hypoglycemia (BG<2.8 mmol/L)., Conclusion: CGMS tests may be important for detecting asymptomatic hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. The NGT people in Chengdu have exhibited abnormal blood glucose values in CGMS, revealing problems in people with normal range of blood glucose.

Objective: To investigate the relationships between Paraoxonase1 (PON1) gene L55M polymorphism and coronary heart diseases (CHD) complicated with fasting hyperglycemia (FHG) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Methods: Two hundreds and eighty four patients were recruited in this study, which comprised 86 patients with CHD, 62 with CHD and FHG, 46 with CHD and T2DM, and 90 patients without the above conditions. The sequences of the PON1 gene L55M polymorphism were analysed by the SNPs methods., Results: The frequency of allele L was 0.86. No significant differences in the frequencies of the three genotypes (LL, LM, and MM) were found among the four groups of patients. The L allele of PON1 L55M was not associated with the number and range of coronary arterial lesions (chi2 = 0.56, P = 0.76; chi2 = 0.11, P = 0.74, respectively)., Conclusion: PON1 gene L55M polymorphism exists in Han populations in Guangdong, with LL as the main genotype. PON1 L55M gene polymorphism and allelic genes are not associated with the level of fasting blood glucose or diabetes mellitus. There is no evidence to support the relationship between PON1 L55M gene polymorphism and coronary artery lesions.
