By comparing the production indexes of large blast furnaces (BF) in China between the first half of 2019 and 2015–2016, the production status, reductant consumption, raw materials and operation conditions have been reviewed. In the first half of 2019, Chinese large BFs still had made a lot of achievements, but it is also discovered by comparison that not only the raw materials quality but also the large BFs stability have the trend of getting worse, so some work should be done to stop and recover the unfavorable situation. Based on that, the expectations of enhancing the raw materials quality and improving the operation conditions are suggested. Large BFs make great contributions to energy saving, low-carbon, high automatic, environmental protection and economic development, so there will bemore large BFs constructed and put into production in China in the future. The massive food wastes pose a growing health concern for spreading of antibiotic resistance and pathogens due to food spoilage. However, little is known about these microbial hazards during collection, classification, and transportation before eventual treatment. Here, we profiled the temporal variations of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), pathogens, bacterial and fungal communities across four typical food wastes (vegetable, fish, meat, and rice) during storage at room temperature in summer (maximum 28–29 °C) of typical southeast city in China. A total of 171 ARGs and 32 mobile genetic elements were detected, and the absolute abundance of ARGs significantly increased by up to 126-fold with the storage time. Additionally, five bacterial pathogens containing virulence factor genes were detected, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was persistently detected throughout the storage time in all food types except rice. Moreover, fungal pathogens (e.g., Aspergillus , Penicillium , and Fusarium) were also frequently detected. Notably, animal food wastes were demonstrated to harbor higher abundance of ARGs and more types of pathogens, indicating a higher level of hazard. Mobile genetic elements and food types were demonstrated to mainly impact ARG profiles and pathogens, respectively. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the microbial hazards associated with food waste recycling, and will contribute to optimize the food waste management to ensure biosecurity and benefit human health. We comprehensively evaluated genetic variants in the thymidylate synthase (TYMS) gene in association with endometrial cancer risk in a population-based case-control study of 1,199 incident endometrial cancer cases and 1,212 age frequency-matched population controls. Exposure information was obtained via in-person interview, and DNA samples (blood or buccal cell) were collected. Genotyping of 11 haplotype-tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) for the TYMS gene plus the 5-kb flanking regions was done for 1,028 cases and 1,003 controls by using the Affymetrix MegAllele Targeted Genotyping System. Of 11 haplotype-tagging SNPs identified, 7 that are located in flanking regions of the TYMS gene are also in the ENOSF1 (rTS) gene. The SNP rs3819102, located in the 3'-flanking region of the TYMS gene and in an intron of the ENOSF1 gene, was associated with risk of endometrial cancer. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the CC genotype was 1.5 (1.0-2.2) compared with the TT genotype. Haplotype TTG in block 2 of the TYMS gene, which includes SNPs rs10502289, rs2298583, and rs2298581 (located in introns of the ENOSF1 gene), was associated with a marginally significant decrease in risk of endometrial cancer under the dominant model (odds ratio, 0.8; 95% confidence interval, 0.6-1.0). This study suggests that genetic polymorphisms in the TYMS or ENOSF1 genes may play a role in the development of endometrial cancer among Chinese women.

Objective: Circulating estrogen levels have been related to the risk of several female cancers. Blood levels of estrogen are controlled by estrogen synthesis enzymes. Genetic variation of estrogen genes thus may influence circulating estrogen levels. We investigated the associations of genetic polymorphisms in CYP19A1, a critical gene involved in estrogen synthesis, with plasma levels of sex hormones among postmenopausal Chinese women., Methods: Included in this study were 345 postmenopausal community controls from a population-based case-control study conducted in Shanghai. Fasting blood samples from those women were measured for blood estradiol, estrone, estrone sulfate, and testosterone. A total of 19 genetic polymorphisms in CYP19A1 were genotyped using ABI7900 or PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. Differences in plasma levels of hormones by genotype were examined using variance analysis., Result: The geometric means of plasma levels of estradiol, estrone, estrone sulfate, and testosterone were 10.1, 16.8, 969.0, and 202.9 pg/ml, respectively, for this study population. We found that plasma levels of estrone were associated with rs28566535 (P=0.0180), rs730154 (P=0.0141), and rs936306 (P=0.0274) in block 2. In the same block, the haplotype CGCTA was related to level of estrone (P=0.0064). Single nucleotide polymorphism rs1902584 in block 1 was associated with estradiol only in overweight postmenopausal women. No clear association with sex hormones was noted for the other genetic polymorphisms evaluated in the study., Conclusion: Single nucleotide polymorphisms in blocks 1 and 2 of the CYP19A1 gene are related to plasma levels of estrogen among postmenopausal Chinese women and may therefore play an important role in the etiology of hormone-related cancers.

Certain polyphenols inhibit the activity of aromatase, a critical enzyme in estrogen synthesis that is coded by the CYP19A1 gene. Consumption of polyphenol-rich foods and beverages, thus, may interact with CYP19A1 genetic polymorphisms in the development of endometrial cancer. The authors tested this hypothesis in the Shanghai Endometrial Cancer Study (1997-2003), a population-based case-control study of 1,204 endometrial cancer cases and 1,212 controls. Dietary information was obtained by use of a validated food frequency questionnaire. Genotypes of CYP19A1 at rs28566535, rs1065779, rs752760, rs700519, and rs1870050 were available for 1,042 cases and 1,035 controls. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals after adjustment for potential confounding factors. Higher intake of soy foods and tea consumption were both inversely associated with the risk of endometrial cancer, with odds ratios of 0.8 (95% confidence interval: 0.6, 1.0) for the highest versus the lowest tertiles of intake of soy and 0.8 (95% confidence interval: 06, 0.9) for ever tea consumption. The association of single nucleotide polymorphisms rs1065779, rs752760, and rs1870050 with endometrial cancer was modified by tea consumption (p(interaction) < 0.05) but not by soy isoflavone intake. The authors' findings suggest that tea polyphenols may modify the effect of CYP19A1 genetic polymorphisms on the development of endometrial cancer.

The Cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) is one of the major CYP450 enzymes catalyzing 4-hydroxylation, an important elimination step for estrogens. Relatively little is known, however, about the impact of this gene on the onset and cessation of menstruation, which are significant milestones in a woman's life and predictors of many hormone related diseases. In this report, we described the association of four SNPs in the CYP1B1 gene, Arg48Gly, Ala119Ser, Leu432Val, and Asp449Asp, with the ages of menarche and menopause, years of menstruation and total number of menstrual cycles. Included in the study were 1958 community controls from two recently completed population-based case-control studies of breast cancer and endometrial cancer. No association was observed between the CYP1B1 polymorphisms and the age of menarche among either pre- or post-menopausal women. Among the women who experienced natural menopause, the three non-synonymous SNPs were significantly associated with menopausal age, years of menstruation, and total number of menstrual cycles. The Gly and Ser alleles of Arg48Gly and Ala119Ser were associated with later menopause, more years of menstruation and more menstrual cycles, while women with allele Val at Leu432Val had a 0.9 year earlier menopause, 1.0 year shorter reproductive span, and 12.6 fewer menstrual cycles than those women without this allele. In conclusion, the results from this study suggested that CYP1B1 genetic polymorphisms may be associated with the natural onset of menopause.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a key regulator of the transcriptional expression for the cytochrome P450 1 (CYP1) genes. CYP1A2 is one of the major CYP1 enzymes that catalyse 2-hydroxylation of estrogen, a hormone that plays a critical role in the etiology of breast cancer. In this study, we investigated whether two common polymorphisms in these two genes, CYP1A2*1F and AhR Lys554Arg, were associated with breast cancer risk in 1090 cases and 1183 controls, a subset of the population-based case-control study, the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study. Caffeine tests were performed in vivo in a subset of 236 study subjects to investigate the relationship of these two polymorphisms with CYP1A2 activity. For the AhR gene, the A (Lys) allele was associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer. Using the genotype GG as reference, odds ratios of 0.82 [95% confidence interval (CI)=0.69-0.99] for the AG genotype and 0.76 (95% CI=0.58-1.01) for the AA genotype (P for trend=0.018) were obtained. However, no association was observed between CYP1A2 genotypes and breast cancer risk, although the CYP1A2*1F polymorphism was found to be related to CYP1A2 activity. The geometric mean values for the caffeine metabolites ratio were 2.90, 2.30, and 1.95 for CC, AC, and AA genotypes, respectively (P for trend=0.024). In conclusion, the results from our study suggest that the AhR Lys554Arg polymorphism may be a genetic susceptibility factor for breast cancer, whereas CYP1A2*1F, which is a potentially functional single nucleotide polymorphism, may not be related to breast cancer risk.

Peak bone mass (PBM) is a complex trait, determined by both genetic and environmental factors and also their interactions. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha), interleukin 6 (IL6), parathyroid hormone (PTH), collagen type I alpha 2 (COL1A2), bone Gla protein (BGP), alpha2-HS glycoprotein (AHSG) are among the important candidate genes of bone metabolism. The study aims to detect significant effect of potential inter-genic action underlying PBM in Chinese females. 361 unrelated healthy premenopausal Chinese females (aged 20 -44 years) with Han ethnicity were recruited from the Shanghai city in China. Bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip and the lumbar spine (L1-4) was measured using a Hologic QDR 2000 + dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanner. Eight polymorphisms among the seven genes were genotyped, i. e. Apa I in VDR, Pvu II and Xba I in ERa (ERX and ERP, respectively), BsrB I in IL6, BstB I in PTH, Msp I in COL1A2, Hind III in BGP, and Sac I in AHSG, using PCR-RFLP (polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism) methods. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant effects of IL6 x ERP interaction on PBM at the total hip (P = 0.019), intertrochanter (P = 0.016), and femoral neck (P =0. 019). The BMD difference between GGPp carriers and GGpp subjects (at these two loci) amounted to 18.0%, 19.5%, and 14.8% at the hip,intertrochanter,and femoral neck,respectively. The potential interaction effect of AHSG x IL6 was observed on femoral neck PBM (P = 0.046). GGSS individuals (at these two loci) had, on average, 18.8% higher femoral neck BMD than those subjects with GGSs genotype. The population-level statistical analysis indicates that IL6 x ERP and AHSG x IL6 have significant inter-genic effect on the genetic determination of PBM in Chinese females.

Aim: To evaluate whether estrogen receptor alpha (ER-alpha) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes are associated with the age at menarche in Chinese women., Methods: A total of 390 pre-menopausal Chinese women were genotyped at the ER-alpha PvuII, XbaI, and VDR ApaI loci using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)., Results: Neither the ER-alpha gene nor the VDR gene individually had significant effects on the age at menarche in our subjects (P>0.10). However, evidence of interaction effects between the two genes were observed: with the aa genotype at the VDR ApaI locus, subjects with haplotype PX at the ER-alpha gene had, on average, 6 months later onset of menarche than the non-carriers (P=0.01)., Conclusion: We found that neither the ER-alpha gene or the VDR gene had a significant association with the age at menarche individually. However, potential interaction effects between the two genes were observed in Chinese women.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a significant determinant of risk for osteoporosis. Genetic factors are known to account for a major proportion of variation of BMD in Caucasians. However, the degree of genetic determination of BMD in Chinese populations has seldom been investigated. The aim of our study was to investigate the magnitude of the genetic determination of BMD at the spine and hip, and their genetic covariation, in a population of Shanghai city in P. R. China. The subjects consisted of 44 full-sib pairs of females aged 19-43 years, 186 mother-daughter pairs, and 270 nuclear families. For BMD at the spine and hip, the values for narrow-sense heritability h2 (+/-SE) were 0.72+/-0.14 and 0.87+/-0.14, respectively, when estimated by full-sib pairs, and 0.44+/-0.07 and 0.77+/-0.07, respectively, when estimated by mother-daughter pairs. There was a significant genetic correlation r(g) (+/-SE) of BMD between the spine and hip, of 0.97+/-0.01 and 0.76+/-0.04, respectively, when estimated by full-sib pairs and mother-daughter pairs. The common household impact on BMD in our study was negligible according to the statistical estimate. We conclude that genetic factors play a major role in the determination of the variation and covariation of BMD at the spine and hip in our Chinese sample.

In the present study, we tested the association between the estrogen receptor alpha (ER-alpha) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes with bone mineral density (BMD). A total of 649 healthy Chinese women, classified as pre-menopausal (N=388) and post-menopausal (N=261) groups, were genotyped at the ER-alpha PvuII, XbaI, and VDR ApaI sites. BMDs at the lumbar spine (L(1)-L(4)) and total hip were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. For the VDR ApaI locus, AA carriers had lower spine BMD than Aa (p=0.02) and aa carriers (p<0.01) in the pre-menopausal group. For the ER-alpha gene, carriers of haplotype px had lower spine BMD than the non-carriers (p=0.03) in the pre-menopausal group. Furthermore, we observed significant interaction between the ER-alpha and VDR genes in the post-menopausal group: with AA genotype (or A allele) at the VDR ApaI locus, pX carriers had higher spine BMD than the non-carriers (p=0.02), and PX carriers had lower hip BMD than the non-carriers (p=0.04). Our data suggest that the ER-alpha and VDR genes may be associated with the BMD variation in Chinese women.
