Objectives: Distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms account for 1%-9% of all intracranial aneurysms. Microsurgical treatment is generally preferred for DACA aneurysms; however, it presents challenges owing to the anatomical complexities. Advances in neuro-interventional techniques have yielded promising results. This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes of DACA aneurysms treated with microsurgery and endovascular treatment (EVT) to elucidate the efficacy of EVT., Materials and Methods: A multicenter observational registry comprising 16 stroke centers was utilized for this study. Data was retrospectively and prospectively analyzed from 166 patients with DACA aneurysms in our database, which included 4,552 consecutive patients with ruptured or unruptured intracranial aneurysms who underwent microsurgical or endovascular treatment between January 2013 and December 2021., Results: Surgical clipping was performed in 115 patients, and 51 underwent coil embolization. The median follow-up duration was 15.3 months. No significant differences were observed in patient characteristics between the two treatment modalities. There were no differences in complication-related morbidity between the microsurgical treatment and EVT groups in either unruptured (10.5% vs. 9.1%, p=1.00) or ruptured aneurysms (5.2% vs. 6.9%, p=0.66). Coil embolization resulted in higher recurrence and retreatment rates than surgical clipping did, especially for ruptured aneurysms (2.6% vs. 27.6%, p<0.01)., Conclusions: Endovascular treatment is an alternative to microsurgery for DACA aneurysms especially in unruptured cases or the patients who have difficulty undergoing craniotomy due to their general condition, albeit with considerations for higher recurrence and retreatment rates, particularly in ruptured cases. Close follow-up is crucial for the effective management of these challenges. The present study investigated how life stress and sleep disturbance impact depressive symptoms among Chinese (N = 185) and Japanese (N = 464) workers. Based on a hypothesis that sleep disturbance can cause depression, a statistical model is established, expecting that work-related life stress indirectly increases depressive symptoms by worsening sleep disturbance rather than initiating depression directly. The study also examined the buffering effects of social support on depression. The extent of depressive symptoms, sleep disturbance symptoms (insomnia, hypersomnia, and nightmare), work-related stressors, and available social support were measured. The result revealed that the extent of depression was equivalent for both groups, but the Chinese reported more stress, less social support, and more severe sleep disturbance symptoms than the Japanese. Despite those differences, the statistical model fitted both groups well, suggesting that addressing sleep disturbance at the earliest opportunity can effectively prevent depression onset for workers., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Matsuda, Kikutani. The genus Chloromyxum (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) is defined as having ridged or smooth bivalvular myxospores containing four polar capsules, with/without caudal filaments. Currently containing more than 140 nominal species, this genus is reasonably speciose with myxospores of unique but heterogeneous morphology. Recent phylogenetic studies have demonstrated its polyphyletic nature. During our myxosporean survey of freshwater fish, a new coelozoic myxosporean species, Chloromyxum trilineatum n. sp., was detected in the gall bladder of the pale chub, Zacco platypus (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), which originated from central Japan. Spores were subspherical, measuring 8.5-9.1 (8.8) μm in length, 7.6-8.2 (8.0) μm in width, and 6.8-7.8 (7.4) μm in thickness (n = 20). The valvular surface was smooth and three or four distinct ridges ran parallel to the suture line. Four almost equal polar capsules, 2.9-3.8 (3.3) μm in length and 1.6-2.4 (2.0) μm in width, assembled at the apical part of the spores. The partial nucleotide sequence of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, 2014 bp in length, was closest to that of morphologically distinct Chloromyxum ellipticum, infecting the gall bladder of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) in China with 96.99% (1673/1725) identity and three insertion/deletion (indel) sites, followed by Chloromyxum legeri, infecting the gall bladder of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in the Czech Republic with 89.97% (1803/2004) identity and 14 indel sites. Other myxosporean species, including Chloromyxum spp. from the gall bladder or urinary system of freshwater and marine fish, were phylogenetically distant from the present species.

Taurine displays anti-tumor activity in some kinds of human cancers. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Epstein-Barr virus-related nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinctive type of head and neck cancer in Southeast Asia with the highest incidence in South China. We examined an apoptosis-inducing effect of taurine against NPC cells (HK1 and HK1-EBV) to clarify the mechanisms of anti-tumor effects of taurine by immunocytochemical methods. We observed that taurine induced cleavage of caspase-9/3 in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting the involvement of mitochondrial apoptotic signals. Both PTEN and p53 activation were detected in a dose-dependent manner after taurine treatment in NPC cells. In conclusion, taurine may play an anti-tumor role by activating tumor suppressor PTEN and p53.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinctive type of head and neck malignancy with a high incidence in southern China. Previous studies have confirmed that taurine shows an anti-cancer effect on a variety of human tumors by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of its anti-cancer effect on NPC is not well understood. To clarify these anti-cancer mechanisms, we performed cell viability and colony formation assays. Apoptotic cells were quantified by flow cytometry. The expression levels of apoptosis-related proteins were evaluated by Western blot. The results showed that taurine markedly inhibited cell proliferation in NPC cells, but only slightly in an immortalized normal nasopharyngeal cell line. Taurine suppressed colony formation and induced apoptosis of NPC cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, taurine increased the active form of caspase-9/3 in a dose-dependent manner. Taurine down-regulated the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-xL and up-regulated the pro-apoptotic protein Bax and GRP78, a major endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperone. These results suggest the involvement of mitochondrial and ER stress signaling in apoptosis. In addition, taurine increased the levels of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10) and p53, and reduced phosphorylated Akt (protein kinase B). In conclusion, taurine may inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in NPC through PTEN activation with concomitant Akt inactivation.

A new pentacyclic indole alkaloid, kopsiyunnanine E, was isolated from Yunnan Kopsia arborea, and its structure, which was inferred from spectroscopic data, was established by a 16-step asymmetric total synthesis that proved that the natural alkaloid was not enantiomerically pure.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors with poor prognosis in Southern China and Southeast Asia. Angiogenesis-related molecules can be promising therapeutic targets in NPC. To investigate the relationships of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and chemokine-related molecules with neoangiogenesis, we compared immunohistochemical analyses of alpha-smooth-muscle actin (α-SMA), stroma-derived factor-1 (SDF-1), and its receptor CXCR4 in primary NPC specimens and chronic nasopharyngitis tissues. In addition, we examined the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A), and CD133- and VEGF- receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) double positive cells, as endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). We also assessed CD34-positive microvessels. Significantly higher expression of α -SMA was observed in fibroblasts in NPC stroma. The immunoreactive intensities of SDF-1 and CXCR4 were significantly higher in NPC cells. CXCR4-positive cells and CD133/VEGFR-2- double positive cells were observed in the stroma surrounding cancer nests, and VEGF was detected in both cancer and stromal cells. Microvessel density was significantly higher in the stroma of NPC tissues compared to chronic nasopharyngitis tissues. Our data suggest that CAFs and NPC tumor cells may enhance neoangiogenesis in a VEGF- and SDF-1-dependent manner by recruiting EPCs from the bone marrow into tumor stroma.

An essential step to create phonology according to the language production model by Levelt, Roelofs and Meyer is to assemble phonemes into a metrical frame. However, recently, it has been proposed that different languages may rely on different grain sizes of phonological units to construct phonology. For instance, it has been proposed that, instead of phonemes, Mandarin Chinese uses syllables and Japanese uses moras to fill the metrical frame. In this study, we used a masked priming-naming task to investigate how bilinguals assemble their phonology for each language when the two languages differ in grain size. Highly proficient Mandarin Chinese-English bilinguals showed a significant masked onset priming effect in English (L2), and a significant masked syllabic priming effect in Mandarin Chinese (L1). These results suggest that their proximate unit is phonemic in L2 (English), and that bilinguals may use different phonological units depending on the language that is being processed. Additionally, under some conditions, a significant sub-syllabic priming effect was observed even in Mandarin Chinese, which indicates that L2 phonology exerts influences on L1 target processing as a consequence of having a good command of English.

Five new alkaloids, including three 19,20-epoxytubotaiwine stereoisomers, viz. kopsiyunnanines F1 (1), F2 (2), and F3 (3), (Z)-isocondylocarpine (4), and (Z)-isocondylocarpine N-oxide (5), along with five known tubotaiwine-type indole alkaloids were isolated from the aerial part of Yunnan Kopsia arborea Blume (Apocynaceae). Their structures including absolute configurations were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical means.

The purpose of the present study was to review the prescription patterns of antidepressants in different countries in East Asia. The survey was conducted in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan from October 2003 to March 2004 using the unified research protocol and questionnaire. Twenty teaching hospitals and major psychiatric hospitals participated and a total of 1898 patients receiving antidepressants were analyzed. The survey provided a number of interesting characteristics on the prescription patterns of antidepressant in East Asia. Out of 56 antidepressants listed in the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification (ATC) index by the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Drug Statistics Methodology (Oslo), only 26 antidepressants were prescribed in participating countries in East Asia. On average 38.4% of prescriptions of antidepressants were for patients with diagnoses other than depressive disorders. The availability and commonly prescribed antidepressants varied greatly by country. The selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) and other newer antidepressants were prescribed in approximately 77.0% of all cases. At the time of the survey, only two SSRI medications were available in Japan. However, five types of SSRI were available and were often prescribed in Korea.

An H5N1 influenza A virus was isolated from duck meat processed for human consumption, imported to Japan from Shandong Province, China in 2003. This virus was antigenically different from other H5 viruses, including the Hong Kong H5N1 viruses isolated from humans in 1997 and 2003. Sequence analysis revealed that six genes (PB1, PA, HA, NA, M, and NS) of this virus showed >97% nucleotide identity with their counterparts from recent H5N1 viruses, but that the remaining two genes (PB2 and NP) were derived from other unknown viruses. This duck meat isolate was highly pathogenic to chickens upon intravenous or intranasal inoculation, replicated well in the lungs of mice and spread to the brain, but was not as pathogenic in mice as H5N1 human isolates (with a dose lethal to 50% of mice (MLD50)=5x10(6) 50% egg infectious doses [EID50]). However, viruses isolated from the brain of mice previously infected with the virus were substantially more pathogenic (MLD50=approximately 10(2) EID50) and possessed some amino acid substitutions relative to the original virus. These results show that poultry products contaminated with influenza viruses of high pathogenic potential to mammals are a threat to public health even in countries where the virus is not enzootic and represent a possible source of influenza outbreaks in poultry.

Objective: This study investigated psychosocial factors underlying the mental health problems of single-child high school students in China, where society and the family situation have been rapidly changing since introduction of the open-economy policy., Method: Three hundred and ten college-bound high school students in Heilong Jiangsheng Harbin completed self-administrative questionnaires in February, 2000. The subjects were divided into single-child and non single-child groups. Analysis of correlations was performed for general attributes, mental conditions measured by General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), personality variables, stressors, and emotion support network. Cause-and-effect factors were also analyzed using Covariance Analysis., Result: In the single-child and in non single-child groups, the percentage suffering neurotic tendencies were 73% and 39%, and the values for a tendency to depression were 63% and 25%, respectively. In the single-child group, anxiety, interpersonal dependence, and perceived stressors were significantly higher while the perceived self-esteem and emotional support from family members were significantly lower than in the non single-child group. Among the variables, having siblings was highly correlated with all the measured factors influencing mental health. The results indicated that a poor emotional support network could cause low self-esteem, high anxiety trait, strong interpersonal dependence, and increased sensitivity to stressors and worsening of mental health., Conclusion: The incidence of mental health related problems was found to be significantly higher in the single-children than in the non single-children. Thus having siblings has positive effects on mental health. The emotional support network also plays an important role in the mental condition, development of a healthy personality, and building a positive attitude toward stressors.
