As an increasingly urbanized country, China faces significant disaster risks. Social vulnerability influences the ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Quantifying social vulnerability is a worthwhile study because it can provide information vital to understanding the interactions among individuals, communities, and society and can further help us improve disaster risk mitigation. Therefore, this paper presents a case study on the social vulnerability assessment of the inner area of Jiaxing, China. With household questionnaire data, we calculated the social vulnerability index (SoVI) through categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA). We also presented a holistic and detailed profile of social vulnerability that links three different levels (e.g., households, apartment blocks, and communities) and contains four aspects of SoVI, such as statistical information, spatial pattern, dimension attributes, and risk state combinations of variables. This profile also responded to criticisms about the index method's reductionist nature. Our results retained as much valuable information as we could, enabling a more holistic understanding of demographic, environmental, and social conditions that influence social vulnerability to disasters in the inner city of Jiaxing. Asian summer monsoon (ASM) variability and its long-term ecological and societal impacts extending back to Neolithic times are poorly understood due to a lack of high-resolution climate proxy data. Here, we present a precisely dated and well-calibrated treering stable isotope chronology from the Tibetan Plateau with 1- to 5-y resolution that reflects high- to low-frequency ASM variability from 4680 BCE to 2011 CE. Superimposed on a persistent drying trend since the mid-Holocene, a rapid decrease in moisture availability between ~2000 and ~1500 BCE caused a dry hydroclimatic regime from ~1675 to ~1185 BCE, with mean precipitation estimated at 42 ± 4% and 5 ± 2% lower than during themid-Holocene and the instrumental period, respectively. This second-millennium-BCE megadrought marks the mid-to late Holocene transition, during which regional forests declined and enhanced aeolian activity affected northern Chinese ecosystems. We argue that this abrupt aridification starting ~2000 BCE contributed to the shift of Neolithic cultures in northern China and likely triggered human migration and societal transformation. The influence and mechanism of volcanic eruptions on decadal megadroughts over eastern China during the last millennium were investigated using a control (CTRL) and five volcanic eruption sensitivity experiments (VOLC) from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Last Millennium Ensemble (LME) archive. The decadal megadroughts associated with the failures of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) are associated with a meridional tripole of sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the western Pacific from the equator to high latitudes, suggestive of a decadal-scale internal mode of variability that emerges from empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Composite analyses further showed that, on interannual time scales, within a decade after an eruption the megadrought was first enhanced but then weakened, due to the change from an El Niño state to a La Niña state. The impacts of volcanic eruptions on the magnitudes of megadroughts are superposed on internal variability. Therefore, the evolution of decadal megadroughts coinciding with strong volcanic eruptions demonstrate that the impacts of internal variability and external forcing can combine to influence hydroclimate. • A new method of estimating the instant case fatality rate of COVID-19 was established. • The average case fatality rate in China was 6.1 ± 2.9%, and it finally stabilized at 5.7% in April, while it was 1% in China except Hubei Province. • The fatality rate of COVID-19 in China was underestimated. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China has been basically controlled. However, the global epidemic of COVID-19 is worsening. We established a method to estimate the instant case fatality rate (CFR) and cure rate of COVID-19 in China. A total of 82 735 confirmed cases released officially by the Chinese authorities from December 8, 2019 to April 18, 2020 were collected. The estimated diagnosis dates of deaths and cured cases were calculated based on the median cure time or median death time of individual cases. Following this, the instant CFR was calculated according to the number of deaths and cured cases on the same estimated diagnosis date. In China, the instant CFR of COVID-19 was 3.8–14.6% from January 1 to January 17; it then declined gradually and stabilized at 5.7% in April. The average CFR in China was 6.1 ± 2.9%, while the CFR was 1.0 ± 0.4% in China except Hubei Province. The cure rate of COVID-19 was 93.9 ± 2.9% in China, and stabilized at 94.3%, while it was 99.0 ± 0.4% in China except Hubei Province. Background/Aims: This study explored the correlation between hypertension and non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 (MYH9) gene polymorphisms in Chinese chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods: This case-control study included 301 patients with CKD and 293 healthy controls. The E1 haplotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs3752462 and rs4821480 were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. The association between MYH9 polymorphisms and high systolic blood pressure (SBP ≥ 140 mmHg) susceptibility in CKD patients was analysed. Results: The cases and controls had similar genotype and allele distributions at rs3752462 and rs4821480. No GG genotype at rs4821480 was observed. Patients with SBP < 140 mmHg were more likely to have the CC genotype (17.1%) than patients with SBP ≥ 140 mmHg (4.3%) (P = 0.001). Creatinine clearance (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.98-0.10, P = 0.01) was associated with SBP in patients with CKD. The risk of SBP ≥ 140 mmHg was 0.24-fold greater among patients with the CC genotype than among patients with the TT genotype (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The rs3752462 polymorphism of MYH9 is associated with SBP in patients with CKD. The T allele in the dominant model was associated with an elevated risk for high SBP. Background China is the world's largest consumer of tobacco, with hundreds of millions of people exposed daily to secondhand smoke (SHS). Comprehensive smoke-free policies are the only effective way to protect the population from the harms of SHS. China does not have a comprehensive national smoke-free law but some local-level regulations have been implemented. Objective To evaluate local level smoke-free regulations across 7 cities in China by measuring the prevalence of smoking in public places (workplaces, restaurants and bars), and support for smoke-free policies over time. Methods Data were from Waves 2 to 4 of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey (2007-- 2012), a face-to-face cohort survey of approximately 800 smokers in each of 7 cities in mainland China. Multivariate logistic regression models estimated with generalised estimating equations were used to test the changes in variables over time. Results As of 2012, over three-quarters of respondents were exposed to smoking in bars; more than two-thirds were exposed to smoking in restaurants and more than half were exposed to smoking in indoor workplaces. Small decreases in the prevalence of smoking were found overall from Waves 2 to 4 for indoor workplaces, restaurants and bars, although the decline was minimal for bars. Support for complete smoking bans increased over time for each venue, although it was lowest for bars. Conclusions Existing partial smoking bans across China have had minimal impact on reducing smoking in public places. A strongly enforced, comprehensive national smoke-free law is urgently needed in order to achieve greater public health gains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in microRNAs (miRNA) have been shown to be related with susceptibility to several human cancers. We evaluated the associations of rs3746444 in pre-miRNA hsa-mir-499 with the risk of gastric cancer (GC) in the Chinese population., Patients and Methods: The rs3746444 (A>G) SNPs were genotyped in 201 GC and 213 non-cancer subjects in a case-control study by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis., Results: There was no significant overall difference in the genotype distributions of rs3746444 (A>G) SNPs between cases and controls. In the logistic regression analyses, no significantly increased risk of GC was found to be associated with variant genotypes., Conclusion: The rs3746444 (A>G) SNP is not associated with susceptibility to GC in the Chinese population., (© 2013 S.
