Konjac species (Amorphophallus spp.) are the only plant species in the world that are rich in a large amount of konjac glucomannan (KGM). These plants are widely cultivated as cash crops in tropical and subtropical countries in Asia, including China. Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) is one of the most destructive bacterial pathogens of konjac. Here, we analyzed the interactions between Pcc and susceptible and resistant konjac species from multiple perspectives. At the transcriptional and metabolic levels, the susceptible species A. konjac and resistant species A. muelleri exhibit similar molecular responses, activating plant hormone signaling pathways and metabolizing defense compounds such as phenylpropanoids and flavonoids to resist infection. Interestingly, we found that Pcc stress can lead to rapid recombination of endophytic microbial communities within a very short period (96 h). Under conditions of bacterial pathogen infection, the relative abundance of most bacterial communities in konjac tissue decreased sharply compared with that in healthy plants, while the relative abundance of some beneficial fungal communities increased significantly. The relative abundance of Cladosporium increased significantly in both kinds of infected konjac compared to that in healthy plants, and the relative abundance in resistant A. muelleri plants was greater than that in susceptible A. konjac plants. Among the isolated cultivable microorganisms, all three strains of Cladosporium strongly inhibited Pcc growth. Our results further elucidate the potential mechanism underlying konjac resistance to Pcc infection, highlighting the important role of endophytic microbial communities in resisting bacterial pathogen infections, especially the more direct role of fungal communities in inhibiting pathogen growth. Primula denticulata subsp. sinodenticulata is an endemic medicinal plant from China; however, its resources are extremely scarce due to a lot of obstacles such as scattered distribution, long natural renewal cycle, and overexploitation for medicinal value. In this study, a rapid propagation protocol in vitro of P. denticulata subsp. sinodenticulata was established, hoping to provide a possible way for resource protection. The leaves and petioles of different ages of the plant were selected as explants, and Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium were used as the basic medium. The appropriate types and concentrations of hormones for growth were selected via a single factor, and then the effects of types and concentrations of different hormones on callus induction and cluster bud occurrence were investigated by a complete combination experiment. The study showed that the callus with a strong redifferentiation capacity was obtained from 8-to 10-day old leaves and 10- to 20-day old petioles in MS medium with 0.5 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and 1.0 mg/l α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) after 30 to 40 days of culture. Subsequently, green cluster bud started to appear with 100% occurrence rate. The obtained cluster bud was subcultured in the aforementioned medium with 12.67 proliferation coefficient. The optimal rooting medium was the hormone-free 1/2MS medium; the rooting rate was 100%, and the survival rate was over 95%. Linear referencing and dynamic segmentation are becoming important means of geographical information system (GIS) development, along with the continuous development of GIS technology. They have specific applications to road maintenance, railway operation and maintenance, and pipeline and urban road management. However, traditional GIS technology only considers space and attributes; it cannot express time, which is an important dimension in the field of rural highway maintenance. To solve the data management problem in the construction-management-maintenanceoperation process of rural highways and data sharing problems among business systems of rural highways, as well as to facilitate the perfection of the full-process management system of rural highways, a full-process management basic data model of rural highways based on dynamic linear location was proposed in this study in accordance with their management characteristics, great cardinal number, extensive distribution, and relatively weak management. A fullprocess management dynamic linear referencing system for the construction, management, and maintenance of highways was established by combining the linear location technology and introducing the time dimension. Finally, a rural highway management system based on linear location was developed, and its convenience was verified by the basic data updating of rural highways in Xianyang City, China. Results show that the proposed full-process management basic data model can realize dynamic changes and trace management of the linear referencing system, while conforming to characteristic of data on rural highway management and maintenance. The built rural highway management system meets the dynamic management requirements of rural highways and can inquire the path information in a timely manner. The proposed management system can improve the accuracy and completeness of basic data by 12% and by 24%, respectively, in the process of concrete application, effectively solving the lag of basic data of rural highway. Objective: To examine factors that are associated with the apprehension levels of oncology nurses toward hospice care. Factors examined in this study included demographics, nursing experience, education levels, title and post, personal experiences, and attitudes toward end-of-life care. Methods: Questionnaires were provided to nurses (n=201) from three first-tier hospitals in China. A quantitative scale, Professional End-of-life Care Attitude Scale (PEAS), was used to assess personal and professional apprehension levels toward hospice care. The PEAS was translated to Chinese with terms adapted to the cultural environment in China. Statistical analyses were performed to examine the relationships between the apprehension levels and various factors. Results: The total PEAS scores exhibited internal consistency and reliability, with a Cronbach α=0.897 and Pearson's r=0.9030. Of the 201 nurses, 184 provided a valid response (91.5%). Education level was significantly correlated with personal (P<0.01) and professional apprehension levels (P<0.05). Higher apprehension level was found in nurses with less education. Conclusion: The PEAS quantitative survey is useful for evaluating apprehension levels of nurses toward hospice care. Nurses with more education experienced less anxiety when providing care for terminally ill patients. This paper examines how undergraduate students’ leadership development may be facilitated in international service-learning (ISL) programs. Student leadership is defined as a relational process whereby students collaborate to effect change for the common good. ISL is organized social services engaged by students in overseas communities to address social problems faced by members of disadvantaged social groups, and to develop students’ competencies, such as leadership, intercultural understanding, and problem-solving. The study examined the questions: What were student leaders’ characteristics? How did student leaders’ characteristics influence the ways students’ negotiated leader-member relationships in ISL teams? How did leader-member relationships influence students’ perceived service quality and leadership development? Findings from interviews with students joining two ISL projects in Ghana and Thailand suggest that reciprocal leadership emphasizing all students’ leadership potential may be more productive in cultivating students’ leadership compared with locating leadership responsibilities solely to positional student leaders in ISL. By highlighting productive leadership characteristics identified from ISL projects, this paper offers practical recommendations on how to promote student leadership development in higher education. Background and Objectives: To examine the associations of regional body fat distribution with metabolic risk factors among Chinese.Methods and Study Design: Truncal fat (TF) and leg fat (LF) were measured by dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) among 947 adults, and abdominal visceral fat (VAT) and subcutaneous fat (SAT), upper leg SAT were measured by magnetic resonance image (MRI) among 103 adults during 2008-2013. Metabolic risk factors included fasting blood glucose, total triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome (MetS).Results: TF showed adverse effect while LF showed beneficial effect on metabolic risk factors, and all these effects were independent of body mass index (BMI) (mostly p<0.01). Individuals with higher TF and lower LF experienced the highest risk of MetS compared to other subgroups of combination of TF and LF (all p<0.05). Abdominal VAT was positively associated with risk of MetS (men: odds ratio (OR)=4.45, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18, 16.8; women: OR=6.54, 95% CI: 1.08, 39.6) and serum triglyceride (men: beta (β)=0.379, 95% CI: 0.090, 0.667; women: β=0.700, 95% CI: 0.327, 1.07). Upper leg SAT showed an opposite association with most metabolic factors compared to abdominal SAT and VAT, however, the association was not statistically significant.Conclusion: TF and LF showed opposite effects on metabolic risk factors among Chinese adults. Abdominal VAT, but not abdominal SAT, was positively associated with serum triglyceride and risk of MetS. Background. Deqi sensation is a complex but an important component for acupuncture effect. In this study, we tried to observe the relationship between Deqi and skin temperature changes and whether there was some relativity between Deqi and needle stimulations on cold congealing and dysmenorrhea rat model. Thirty-two female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into four groups (Saline Control Group, Model Group, Group A with strong stimulation, and Group B with small stimulation). Group A and Group B were performed with different stimulations.We found that, compared with saline control group,model group, and Group B, Group A showed that the skin temperature changes on right acupoint SP6 and SP10 increased significantly at 5 min-10 min interval. The skin temperature changes on left SP6 decreased at instant-5 min interval. The skin temperature changes on right SP10 decreased significantly at instant-5 min interval and 10 min-20 min interval. Thermogenic action along Spleen Meridian of Foot Greater Yin was manifested as simultaneous skin temperature increase on right SP6 and SP10 at 5 min-10 min interval after needling SP6, which was helpful to illustrate the relationship between the characteristic of Deqi and needle stimulations. Activity-travel behaviors of women and men are different because they have different social and household responsibilities. However, studies concerning gender differences are mainly limited in developed countries. This paper concentrates on gender role-based differences in activity-travel behavior in a typical developing country, namely, China. Using data from 3656 cases collected through surveys conducted in Shangyu, data processing, method choice, and descriptive analysis were conducted. Binary and ordered logistic regression models segmented by gender were developed to evaluate the mechanism through which individual sociodemographics, household characteristics, and activity participations affect the number of trip chain types and activities for women and men. The results show that women aged 30 to 50 perform less subsistence activities. However, the difference between the different age groups of men is not as significant. In addition, men with bicycles and electric bicycles have more subsistence and maintenance activities, whereas women do not have these attributes. Moreover, women with children under schooling age make more maintenance trip chains but less leisure trip chains and activities, whereas men are free from this influence. More than 100 tons of nitrobenzene and related compounds were released into Songhua River due to the explosion of an aniline production factory in November, 2005. Sediment samples were taken from the heavily polluted drainage canal, one upstream and three downstream river sites. The change of bacterial community structures along the river was studied by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and cloning and sequencing of 16S rRNA genes with five clone libraries constructed and 101 sequences acquired representing 172 clones. Both DGGE profiles and sequences of 16S rRNA genes from clone libraries demonstrated that the contaminated drainage canal and three downstream river sites were similar in that all had Betaproteobacteria, mainly grouped into Comamonadaceae, as the dominant group of bacteria, and all had Firmicutes, primarily as Clostridium spp. These results suggest that these latter two groups of bacteria may play potential roles in degradation and detoxification of nitrobenzene in the present contaminated river environments. The myocardial protective effects of water extracts from Hsian-tsao (Mesona procumbens Hemsl.) on diabetic rats were investigated. Thirty Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into three groups, "control group" (n=10) with intraperitoneal saline injection, "diabetic group" (n=10) with 60 mg of intraperitoneal streptozotocin injection per kg of body weight and "Hsian-tsao group" (n=10) with intragastric administration of Hsian-tsao extracts every day for 4 weeks after intraperitoneal streptozotocin injection. Body weight and blood sugar concentrations were measured before and after model induction in the three groups. Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) expressions in the myocardium were monitored by immunohistochemistry and rt-RT-qPCR analysis. Myocardial ultrastructural changes were also analyzed by using transmission electron microscopy. Our results demonstrated that diabetic myocardial ultrastructural changes included myofibrillar disarrangements, mitochondria disruption, and an increase in nuclear membrane invaginations. These damages were significantly less severe in the Hsian-tsao group compared with the diabetic group. A significant increase of the TSP-1 expression was also observed in the hearts of the diabetic rats (p <0.01), but it was relatively lower in the Hsian-tsao group than in the diabetic group (p <0.01). It suggested that Hsian-tsao treatment in the diabetic rats effectively prevented the pathological alterations in the myocardium and decreased TSP-1 expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) are the most well-known precursors of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), but limited information is available on their occurrence and fate in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The occurrence of FTOHs was investigated in influent, secondary effluent, and sludge of 12 municipal WWTPs in nine cities of China. FTOHs were detected in all WWTPs, and 8:2 FTOH was the predominant congener, with concentrations of 2.10-11.0 ng/L, 3.05-12.4 ng/L, and 0.36- 1.91 ng/g dry weight in the influent, secondary effluent, and sludge, respectively. Relatively high proportions of long-chain FTOHs (C10-16) were mainly detected in sludge samples. The mass balance of FTOHs and PFCAs in one of the WWTPs with an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process was further explored. The decrease of mass loads was observed for 4:2 FTOH (mass change percentage: 21 ± 3.3%), 8:2 FTOH (22 ± 1.5%), and 10:2 FTOH (29 ± 7.3%) through aerobic treatment, while the increase of mass loads was observed for 12 PFCAs from 18 ± 16% (perfluorononanoic acid) to 165 ± 15% (perfluorobutyric acid)), suggesting the potential biotransformation of FTOHs to PFCAs in the aerobic unit. This work provides the first report on the occurrence of FTOHs in sludge samples of municipal WWTPs and their mass balance and highlights a new emission route to environment via WWTPs. In this study, we try to evaluate the effects of acupuncture stimulation with different amounts at Sanyinjiao (SP6) on uterine contraction and uterus microcirculation in rats with dysmenorrhea of cold coagulation syndrome and to explore whether there is direct relativity between "De qi" and needle stimulus intensity. Diestrus female rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, including saline control group,model control group, "A" stimulus group (with strong stimulus), and "B" stimulus group (with weak stimulus). We found that dysmenorrhea rats of the cold coagulation syndrome present a high intensity in uterine tension and high contraction of microvascular diameter. Acupuncture applied with two different stimuli could relieve the symptoms, but, compared with "B" stimulus, "A" stimulus leads to better outcomes on reducing uterine contraction and increasing diameter of uterine microvascular; moreover, hand manipulation during needling mediates the curative effect on the microvascular diameter. Our finding indicates that using thick needles and deep insertion with hand manipulation are more effective and achieve desired level of "De qi" in dysmenorrhea rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Spine grape (Vitis davidii Foex) is an important wild grape species in South China. Recently, some researchers attempted to convert its juice to wine, but the phenolic profiles of the spine grape wines are unknown. In this study, five cultivars of spine grape from Chongyi County, China, were used to produce wines using exactly the same technology. And the phenolic profiles of these young spine grape wines were assessed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS). The results showed that anthocyanins mainly exist as the diglucoside form of anthocyanidins and malvidin-3,5-diglucoside was the most abundant anthocyanin. Similar to most vinifera wines, flavan-3-ols were the major class of phenolic compounds present in spine grape wines. Quercetin-3-rhamnoside was the main singular flavonol. In addition, syringetin-3-glucoside and dihydroquercetin-3-hexoside were the characteristic flavonols of red and white spine grape wines, respectively. With regard to phenolic acids, coutaric acid and fertaric acid are dominant phenolic acids. Within these spine grape wines, Yishan wines showed the most different features regarding practically all of the phenolic profiles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Spine grape (Vitis davidii Foex) is an important wild plant species in South China. To provide sufficient experimental evidence for the strong antioxidant activity of spine grapes, four cultivars from Chongyi County, China, including three red varieties (Junzi #1, Junzi #2, and Liantang) and one white variety (Baiyu) were evaluated. The Junzi #1 had the highest phenolic content (total phenolic, flavonoids, flavanols, and anthocyanins) and the strongest antioxidant capacity (DPPH radical-scavenging capacity, cupric-reducing capacity and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity) among the four varieties. HPLC analysis of spine grapes revealed that the (+)-catechin was the most abundant phenolics and the hydroxycinnamic acids were the major phenolic acids in the four varieties. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that the Junzi #1 belongs to the group with high phenolic content and strong antioxidant power. The results suggest the Junzi #1 has the best health promoting properties, and the higher utilization value and potential for development. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Among the most widespread structures for successfully retaining water and checking erosion on the semi-arid portions of China's Loess Plateau, check dams retain silt at slower than projected rates, leading to flood control issues. Meanwhile, the shortage and the uneven distribution of time and space of water resources in semi-arid areas can easily cause droughts and floods, which seriously restricted the rapid development of the socioeconomic. However, some of the high-quality rain and flood resources accumulated in the check dams can be used to alleviate part of the water resources crisis instead of causing flood. With the goal of holistically maximizing a projected check dam array's water resource, ecosystem and socioeconomic benefits, a Check Dam Benefit Maximization Model (CDBMM) was first developed. The CDBMM was first applied to the Si Jiagou Basin, and the model showed the total costs represent 7.07% of the total and rather significant benefits. Water resources benefits accounting for 45.40% of the total benefits, indicating that the water resources benefits were substantial and should be considered as the main influencing factors in the basin's ecosystemfriendly design and construction. Use of the CDBMM in watershed planning will allow a more efficient use of water and soil resources and greatly alleviate water crises in the semi-arid area. Low-income commuters have distinct activity-travel characteristics from non-low-income commuters. This study examines low-income commuters' activity-travel pattern for a better understanding the mechanism of activity participation and travel behaviour based on the travel survey data collected in Nanjing, China. Structural equations modelling (SEM) methodology was adopted to estimate the complex relationships among socio-demographics, accessibility, activity participation, trip generation and mode choice. Results show that strong relationships do exist among socio-demographics, activity engagement and travel behavior. Specifically, we can understand travel behaviour better by including activity participation endogenously in the model. Furthermore, it allows us to better forecast how increasing any one type of activity will affect demand for other activities, as well as trip generation and mode choice. Lastly, the results reveal the effects of accessibility variables on activity participation and travel behaviour in which population density measure has more ubiquitous effects. Background: The maternal mortality rate (MMR) markedly decreased in China, but there has been a significant imbalance among different geographic regions (east, central and west regions), and the mortality in the western region remains high. This study aims to examine how much disparity in the health system and MMR between ethnic minority and non-minority counties exists in Sichuan province of western China and measures conceivable commitments of the health system determinants of the disparity in MMR.Methods: The MMR and health system data of 67 minority and 116 non-minority counties were taken from Sichuan provincial official sources. The 2-level Poisson regression model was used to identify health system determinants. A series of nested models with different health system factors were fitted to decide contribution of each factor to the disparity in MMR.Results: The MMR decreased over the last decade, with the fastest declining rate from 2006 to 2010. The minority counties experienced higher raw MMR in 2002 than non-minority counties (94.4 VS. 58.2), which still remained higher in 2014 (35.7 VS. 14.3), but the disparity of raw MMR between minority and non-minority counties decreased from 36.2 to 21.4. The better socio-economic condition, more health human resources and higher maternal health care services rate were associated with lower MMR. Hospital delivery rate alone explained 74.5% of the difference in MMR between minority and non-minority counties. All health system indicators together explained 97.6% of the ethnic difference in MMR, 59.8% in the change trend, and 66.3% county level variation respectively.Conclusions: Hospital delivery rate mainly determined disparity in MMR between minority and non-minority counties in Sichuan province. Increasing hospital birth rates among ethnic minority counties may narrow the disparity in MMR by more than two-thirds of the current level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to examine a 16-year trend in cognitive impairment (CI) incidence and associated factors among older Chinese people. Subjects: aged 60 and above whose cognitive function were normal at their first test. Methods: a secondary analysis that identified subjects from the database of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The database contained mixed longitudinal cohorts of older Chinese people surveyed in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008-09, 2011-12 and 2014. The cognitive function of subjects was tested using the Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) in each wave. The unique individual code identified a mixed cohort of 17,896 subjects who had multiple CMMSE measures over a 16-year period and available covariates for the analysis. CI was defined as the CMMSE score below 18 points. Crude and age-standardised incidence of CI by gender were calculated by year of survey. Risk factor adjusted time trends in the incidence were examined using multilevel regression models. Results: age-standardised CI incidence decreased from 58.77‰ to 10.09‰ (P < 0.001) from 1998 to 2014, and this decrease remained after adjusting for covariates. About 15.8% in the observed decline was explained by higher education, and 7.9% was due to health practice (regular exercise, physical activity and cognitive activity), beyond age and gender effects. Conclusion: the CI incidence among older Chinese people decreased from 1998 to 2014. Natural organic matter (NOM) represents the major source of precursors for disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), formed during disinfection of drinking water, but the molecular composition and reactivity of NOM remain not well understood. In this study, electrospray ionization coupled to Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was used to characterize the molecular composition of NOM of 20 source waters taken across China for the purpose of determining the major precursors of THMs and HAAs at molecular level. It was found that there is a core of NOM compositions that are ubiquitous in different source waters, which is supposed to be more relevant for NOM quality. Formation potentials (FP) of THMs and HAAs were determined for NOM from different source waters during chlorination. Spearman's rank correlation was used to link THMFP and HAAFP with the individual molecular composition of NOM. Significant correlation (P < 0.001) was found between DBPFP and the NOM molecules with a high O/C ratio and low H/C ratio, indicating these molecules could contribute greatly to the formation of THMs and HAAs during chlorination. The link of THMFP and HAAFP with individual NOM molecules may allow us to develop more effective treatment strategies to achieve the drinking water safety objective: effective disinfection of waterborne pathogens while minimizing toxic DBPs. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and sociodemographic factors of anemia in children <36 months old in China. In this study, data of 24 235 children were investigated from 32 primary health care (PHC) facilities in 11 province-level regions. Pearson χ2-test and logistic regression model were used to estimate potential risk factors associated with anemia. The overall prevalence of anemia was 24.4%, and 32.8% children from rural areas were anemic, but no statistically significant difference was observed between male and female. Predictors of anemia are different regions of China, cesarean delivery, premature birth and neonatal asphyxia. We also found that education level and income of children's parents are important determinants of childhood anemia. In additional, feeding practice would affect anemia among children aged 6-12 months. Our results could provide some insights for prevention and control of childhood anemia in PHC facilities. Objectives Low rates of HIV testing drive the rapidly growing HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. We examined the potential usefulness of couple-based and collective HIV testing strategies among Chinese MSM. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 1113 MSM in 2013. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with willingness to receive couple- based and collective testing. Results Acceptability of couple-based testing was very high among participants (86.1%), with a moderate level of interest in collective testing (43.2%). Being 'out' to others about one's sexual identity (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.48, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.17) and having ever had an HIV test (AOR=3.05, 95% CI 2.10 to 4.33) were associated with willingness to receive couple-based testing. Having multiple male anal sex partners in the past 3 months was associated with willingness to participate in collective testing (AOR=1.43, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.99). Discussion Couple-based and collective HIV testing could help better control the HIV epidemic among Chinese MSM if implemented and promoted in a culturally competent manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study applied a sensitive dansylation LC-MS/MS method to the investigation on the occurrence of bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), estrogens (E1 and E2), and their 11 chlorinated byproducts in 62 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) of 31 major cities across China. BPA (4.7-512 ng/L), NP (8.2-918 ng/L), and E1 (ND-9.9 ng/L) were widely detected in source waters, E2 was detected in less than half of the samples (ND-3.2 ng/L), while chlorinated byproducts were only detected in source waters of two DWTPs. In drinking water, chlorinated BPAs and monochloro-NP (MCNP) were detected in more than half of the samples with concentrations of 0.2-26.7 ng/L for monochloro-BPA (MCBPA), ND-6.3 ng/L for dichloro-BPA (DCBPA), ND-7.7 ng/L for trichloro-BPA (TCBPA), ND-4.8 ng/L for tetrachloro-BPA (TBBPA), and ND-13.3 ng/L for MCNP, while dichloro-E1 (DCE1, ND-0.2 ng/L) and dichloro-NP (DCNP, ND-1.6 ng/L) were less frequently detected (10/62 and 4/62). The production of chlorinated NPs in DWTPs was mainly influenced by the amount of NP in source water and chlorine added, while the concentrations of chlorinated BPAs in drinking waters were only found to be significantly correlated with those of BPA in source waters. Advanced treatment processes could be effective techniques for reducing target chlorinated byproducts in drinking water. This is the first report on the occurrence of chlorinated byproducts of BPA, NP, and estrogens in drinking water, and these chemicals should be considered when assessing the human risk of their parent compounds. De-qi refers to the participant's subjective sensations and objective body responses as well as the acupuncturist's perceptions while the acupuncturist needles certain acupoints in the participant's body. In recent years, De-qi is getting increasing attention of the researchers and many efforts have been made to understand its mechanism. By the broad literature survey, this paper explores the subjective De-qi sensation of the patients, its influencing factors, and the resulting physiological responses. The purpose of this paper is expected to find out a possible mechanism of De-qi and to provide certain scientific evidence for acupuncture fundamental research and clinical practice. The formation of toxic nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs), such as nitrosamines, halonitromethanes and haloacetonitriles, from reactions between chlorine/chloramine and dissolved organic nitrogen in drinking water has caused great concern with regarding public health. This study revealed the occurrence of 17 aliphatic amines, some of which have been confirmed to be the precursors of N-DBPs, in source water across China. A sensitive method based on benzenesulfonyl chloride derivatization and liquid-liquid extraction followed by GC-MS analysis was established for the simultaneous analysis of the selected amines in aqueous samples. In total, 37 source water samples from the capital cities of 20 provinces were collected for the survey. Among the 17 amines, 14 were detected with an average frequency of detection of 36%. The most relevant amines in terms of frequency and maximum concentrations detected were dimethylamine (100%, 24.82 μg/L), methylamine (78%, 0.92 μg/L), N-methylethylamine (70%, 8.84 μg/L), propylamine (59%, 10.69 μg/L), diethylamine (54%, 3.76 μg/L), N-methylbutylamine (35%, 3.07 μg/L), N-ethylpropylamine (35%, 0.52 μg/L), and piperidine (32%, 2.35 μg/L). This is the first large scale survey of the aliphatic amines occurrence in source water in the world. The wide presence of nitrosamine precursors like dimethylamine, N-methylethylamine and diethylamine, and the precursors of haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes like methylamine and propylamine suggests that better source water management is required to ensure the safety of drinking water. Background: The bi-relationships between psychological stress, negative affect and disordered eating has been well studied in western culture, while tri-relationship among them, i.e. how some of those factors influence these bi-relationships, has rarely been studied. However, there has been little related study in the different Chinese culture. This study was conducted to investigate the bi-relationships and tri-relationship between psychological stress, negative affect, and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors in young Chinese women. Methodology: A total of 245 young Chinese policewomen employed to carry out health and safety checks at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo were recruited in this study. The Chinese version of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Beck Depression Inventory Revised (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) were administered to all participants. Principal Findings: The total scores of PSS-10, BDI-II and BAI were all highly correlated with that of EAT-26. The PSS-10 score significantly correlated with both BDI-II and BAI scores. There was no statistically significant direct effect from perceived stress to disordered eating (-0.012, 95%Cl: -.038˜0.006, p = 0.357), however, the indirect effects from PSS-10 via affect factors were statistically significant, e.g. the estimated mediation effects from PSS to EAT-26 via depression and anxiety were 0.036 (95%Cl: 0.022˜0.044, p<0.001) and 0.015 (95%Cl: 0.005-0.023, p<0.01), respectively. Conclusions: Perceived stress and negative affects of depression and anxiety were demonstrated to be strongly associated with disordered eating. Negative affect mediated the relationship between perceived stress and disordered eating. The findings suggest that effective interventions and preventative programmes for disordered eating should pay more attention to depression and anxiety among the young Chinese female population. The concentrations of Cryptosporidium in the source water of several cities of Zhejiang Province, China were determined to be in the range of 0-17 oocysts/10 L in the rainy season in 2008, with a mean value of 7 oocysts/10 L. Based on the investigation data, comprehensive risk assessment of Cryptosporidium infection was performed by considering different water intake routes as well as water consumption. Intakes of unboiled tapwater (including drinking and tooth-brushing and food and dish washing) and source water (through swimming in rivers) were estimated to be 2.59-25.9 and 0.32-0.74 L/year-person, respectively. The mortality due to Cryptosporidium infection for people in this region, excluding HIV-infected patients, was calculated as 0-0.0146 per 105 persons using a conditional probability formula. Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were used to quantify the risk of Cryptosporidium infection, for which uncertainty was analyzed. For people who consumed conventionally treated water, the DALYs due to Cryptosporidium infection were 6.51 per 105 (95% CI: 2.16 × 10-5-22.35 × 10-5) persons, which were higher than a risk judged acceptable by some (1.97 × 10-5 DALYs per year), and the risk for those consuming ozone-treated water became 0.0689 × 10-5 DALYs per year. The major risk of infection resulted from swimming in the river. This study provides a method to establish the risk of Cryptosporidium infection and optimize the scheme for reducing the risk effectively, which is useful for the modification of water quality standards based on cost utility analysis given use of DALYs. Scientists have become increasingly concerned about the occurrence of antibacterial resistance in the environment. In this study, Escherichia coli resistant to one or more antibiotics among nine antibiotics was screened from Wenyu River Basin in Beijing, China, with mean frequency of 48.7 ± 8.7% of 388 isolates in summer and 47 ± 6% of 236 isolates in winter. The mean multiantibiotic resistance (MAR) index in summer was 0.11 ± 0.03, slightly lower than that (0.14 ± 0.04) in winter. Most frequent resistance appeared for sulfonamides, tetracycline, and ampicillin. The distribution of 20 tetracycline, three sulfonamide, and three β-lactam resistance genes was assessed in the resistant isolates. While 97% of the ampicillin (AMP) resistant mechanism could be explained by the resistance gene TEM, 90% of the tetracycline (TC) and 96% of the sulfonamide (SXT) resistances could be explained by tet(A), tet(B), tet(M), and their combinations and sul(I), sul(II), sul(III), and their combinations, respectively. tet(M), a tetracycline-resistant gene originally detected in Gram-positive bacteria, and its combinations with tet(A) or tet(B) were first detected in E. coli isolated from a natural river basin, suggesting that tet(M) in E. coli might have been transferred from other bacterial species through horizontal gene transfer, which was supported by the fact that no tet(M) was detected in the isolates of human and chicken sources, except for only one isolate from swine. The source of sulfonamide-resistant E. coli in the river was supposed to be mainly from humans, based on a comparison of the sulfonamide resistance genotypes in animals and humans. The ubiquity of nonylphenol (NP) in aquatic environments has been well documented, and the long-term fate of NP in sediments is a concern from the viewpoint of risk assessment due to its endocrine-disrupting effects. This paper reports on the assessment of long-term fate of NP in marine sediments by determining extractable and nonextractable fractions of NP in surface sediments and a sediment core from Bohai Bay, North China. The extractable fraction was operationally defined as the fraction of NP that was extracted with a solvent mixture of methanol/methylene chloride, and the nonextractable fraction was the portion of NP that can be released from the sediments by alkaline hydrolyzing after the initial solvent extraction. The total concentrations (extractable and nonextractable) of NP were 3.4-34.3 ng/g dw in the surface sediments and 2.2-17.7 ng/g dw in the sediment core. Depending on the sedimentation time, the percentage of nonextractable NP relative to the total NP in the core ranged from 38 to 99%. Based on the relationship between the percentage of nonextractable NP in sediments and sedimentation time, the sequestration rate of NP in the sediment core from Bohai Bay was estimated to be 0.94%∙a-1.
