Background: Existing research indicates that the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on preventing and treating hypertension. However, its specific effect on hypertension among elderly Chinese individuals is unclear. Aims: The objective of this research was to explore the association between the Chinese version of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (cMIND) diet and hypertension among elderly Chinese individuals, aiming to offer novel strategies for alleviating the burden of hypertension in this demographic. Methods: In this study, we used cross-sectional data published in 2018 by the China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) to develop a binary logistic regression model to investigate the correlation between cMIND diet and hypertension in a Chinese elderly population. Restricted cubic spline was used to test for linear associations, and further subgroup analyses were performed to test for interactions. Results: In total, 7,103 older adults were included in the study, with a prevalence of hypertension of 39.0%. When the cMIND diet score was used as a continuous variable, a significant protective effect against hypertension was present (OR = 0.955, 95% CI:0.923–0.988, p = 0.008); when used as a categorical variable, this protective effect was still present at higher levels (compared to lower levels) of the cMIND diet (OR = 0.869, 95% CI: 0.760–0.995, p = 0.042). Discussion: Although the Mediterranean diet has great potential to reduce the chance of hypertension, it should also consider the effect on the Chinese population. The results of this study provide new ways to reduce the disease burden of hypertension in Chinese older adults and improve quality of life in later life. Objectives Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a unique indicator of underlying distress that may be strongly associated with suicide risk. Despite this, to date, no study has examined the association between MCI and suicidal ideation. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the association between MCI and suicidal ideation among adults aged ≥65 years from 6 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs; China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa). Methods Cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the World Health Organization's Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health were analyzed. MCI was defined using the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association criteria. Self-reported information on past 12-month suicidal ideation was collected. Multivariable logistic regression and meta-analysis were conducted to assess associations. Results Data on 13,623 individuals aged ≥65 years were analyzed. The prevalence of suicidal ideation ranged from 0.5% in China to 6.0% in India, whereas the range of the prevalence of MCI was 9.7% (Ghana) to 26.4% (China). After adjustment for potential confounders, MCI was significantly associated with 1.66 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 1.12–2.46) times higher odds for suicidal ideation. Discussion Mild cognitive impairment was significantly associated with higher odds for suicidal ideation among older adults in LMICs. Aim and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the intensity of needs for home health care services (HHCs) among elderly patients with chronic diseases and to identify the associated factors. Design: A cross‐sectional survey was conducted in Wuhou District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, from April to November 2021. Methods: Convenient sampling was used to screen elderly patients with chronic diseases managed by Yulin Community Health Service Center. The questionnaires included general information and the Chinese version of the Community Healthy Intensity Rating Scale were completed according to patients' conditions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression. Results: A total of 371 patients (10.40%) completed the survey. The mean age of the elderly patients was 84.04 years (SD = 7.07); these patients suffered from 1 to 7 kinds of chronic diseases, and the most common were hypertension (78.98%) and diabetes (40.97%). The need intensity of patients for HHCs was moderate (41.51%) or severe (58.49%). For each additional chronic disease that patients suffered from, the need intensity increases by 1.289 times (OR = 1.289; 95% CI: 1.055–1.575, p =.013); in additional, those aged more than 90 years, with a personal monthly income less than 2500 yuan ($387.00), with a poor health current status, and with only basic medical insurance presented greater need intensity (p <.05). Conclusion: Our data analysis revealed that economic status, insurance condition, poor health status, and multiple comorbidities may be the most common factors associated with the need intensity for HHCs. The present study aims to develop an effective risk-prediction score (RPS) to improve screening efficiency and contribute to secondary prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC). Screening for colorectal lesions. 14,398 high-risk individuals aged 50–65 years were included. The baseline characteristics of participants with and without colorectal lesions (CL) were compared using a Chi-squared test. The overall population was randomly split into a training set and a test set in the ratio of 80% and 20%. One-factor and multifactor logistic regression analyses were performed in the training set to construct the RPS (scores of 0–9.62). Area under curve (AUC) was calculated as an estimate of predictive performance using the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve in the test set. In the study population, being male, advanced age, current or previous smoking, weekly alcohol consumption, high body mass index (BMI ≥24 kg/m2), and previously detected colonic polyp were associated with higher risk of CL. Compared to the low-risk group (0–2.31 points), the ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the moderate-risk group (2.31–3.85 points) and high-risk group (3.85–8.42 points) were 1.58 (1.44, 1.73) and 2.52 (2.30, 2.76), respectively. For every 1-point increase in score, participants had a 27% increased risk of CL (OR:1.27, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.30). For participants with CL predicted by RPS, the area under the working characteristic curve was 0.61 (P < 0.001). Our RPS can quickly and efficiently identify multiple lesions of the colorectum. Objectives: Childhood maltreatment has long-lasting effects on mental health. Existing evidence suggests that trajectories of depressive symptoms vary among individuals; however, little is known about how childhood maltreatment shapes these trajectory patterns. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of childhood maltreatment on eight-year depressive trajectories among Chinese older adults. Method: Five waves of longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were utilized. Growth Mixture Modelling was performed to identify distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms, and multinomial logistic regression was conducted to explore the associations between these trajectories and childhood maltreatment. Results: Four trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: the 'no symptoms' class (61.83%), the 'increasing symptoms' class (14.49%), the 'decreasing symptoms' class (16.44%), and the 'chronic symptoms' class (7.24%). Older adults who experienced childhood physical abuse were more likely to be in the 'chronic symptoms' class than in the 'no symptoms' class, whereas emotional neglect did not show a significant association with three problematic trajectories. Conclusion: This study provides empirical evidence that childhood physical abuse increases the likelihood of developing chronic depressive symptoms in later life. To mitigate this risk, it is crucial to institute comprehensive treatment plans that incorporate trauma-informed care principles, employ evidence-based therapies specifically designed to address the long-term effects of abuse, and prioritize regular screening and assessment of mental health among older adults. Objectives: Previous studies on the associations between Internet use and older people's depression have mostly focused on single types of online activities, especially online social engagement. The current study investigated the diversity of purposes of Internet use and its interaction with the time spent online in shaping older Chinese Internet users' depression. Method: A sample of 974 Internet users aged 60 and above was adopted from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies wave. We adopted a latent class analysis (LCA) to explore the diverse purposes of internet usage. Results: The participants were classified into three distinct types: socializers, basic users, and maximizers. Basic users and maximizers use the Internet for various purposes, despite different intensities; socializers use the Internet only to keep connected with families and friends. Compared with basic users and maximizers, a longer time spent online among socializers was significantly associated with a higher level of depression. Conclusion: This study calls for a closer examination of online profiles among older Internet users; more attention should be paid to the potential harms of excessive Internet use for social reasons only among older adults. Objectives: To investigate the association of serum saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and prevalent mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Methods: A total of 607 Chinese adults aged at least 45 years were included in the baseline survey of The Lifestyle and Healthy Aging of Chinese Square Dancer Study. Serum concentrations of individual SFAs including 6 even-chain SFAs (C14:0, C16:0, C18:0, C20:0, C22:0, and C24:0) and 4 odd-chain SFAs (C15:0, C17:0, C21:0, and C23:0), were quantified by Gas chromatography system with a mass spectrometer. According to Petersen's criteria, prevalent MCI was diagnosed by neurologists through uniformed neuropsychological tests, including trail-making test-part B (TMT-B), auditory verbal learning test (AVLT), digit symbol substitution test (DSST), and verbal fluency test (VFT). Results: The median age was 62 years with an interquartile range of 57.0 to 67.0 years, and 86 (14.17%) participants were living with MCI. Higher levels of either even-chain or odd-chain individual SFAs were associated with the higher odds of MCI, and their odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were 2.054 (1.012 to 4.171) for C14:0, 2.246 (1.061 to 4.755) for C16:0, 2.789 (1.321 to 5.886) for C18:0, and 2.329 (1.136 to 4.778) for C15:0, and 2.761 (1.310 to 5.820) for C17:0, respectively. Conclusions: The serum concentration of SFAs was positively related to the odds of MCI in middle-aged and elderly adults. Background: The prevalence of oral diseases is subject to change over time. In 2021, Guangdong Province conducted its fourth survey assessing the oral health status of individuals aged 65–74. Materials and methods: Evaluation criteria and potential influencing factors were identified. A sample of residents aged 65–74 from 13 designated monitoring sites in Guangdong Province was randomly selected for the study. Spearman correlation analysis was employed to investigate the clinical correlation between influencing factors and evaluation criteria. Negative binomial and zero-inflated negative binomial regression models were utilized to examine the factors influencing caries prevalence. In contrast, logistic regression was employed to identify the risk factors for caries occurrence. A p-value of ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of caries rate of crowns, roots, and teeth were 76.36%, 52.25%, and 79.2%, respectively. Individuals with periodontal pockets exhibited a significantly higher risk of root caries. The presence of dental calculus significantly exacerbated the occurrence of crown, root, and dental caries, and increased the risk of crown and dental caries. Consuming sweet foods once or more a week notably increased the average root decayed score (D of roots), the prevalence rate of root caries, and the D score of the Decayed, Missing, and Filled teeth [DMFT] index in individuals already afflicted with this condition. Similarly, the consumption of sweetened drinks significantly elevated the risk of crown and root caries, exacerbating overall caries progression. Frequencies of manual toothbrush and toothpick cleaning showed a negative correlation with average tooth missing score (MT). In contrast, the frequency of manual/electric toothbrush and toothpick cleaning was negatively correlated with the DMFT index. Engaging in dental diagnosis and treatment behaviors significantly increased the number of filled crowns (F), MT, and DMFT scores while reducing the prevalence of dental caries. Conclusions: In Guangdong Province, caries prevalence among older individuals aged 65–74 remains substantial. Relevant professionals and institutions must provide comprehensive guidance and assistance to the older population, emphasizing the importance of reducing the consumption of sweets and sweetened beverages, adopting correct tooth brushing techniques and frequency (at least twice daily), timely treatment of periodontal diseases, conducting regular epidemiological caries surveys, and addressing economic barriers to accessing caries diagnosis and treatment services. Background: This study explored risk perception characteristics and influencing factors among informal caregivers of functionally dependent elderly individuals at home, aiming to improve caregivers' caregiving risk perception and coping abilities and ultimately enhance the quality of life for these individuals. Methods: We used purposive sampling to select 22 informal caregivers from a community in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China, between March and September 2023 and conducted face-to-face semi-structured in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Results: We extracted two themes, caregiving risk perception characteristics and caregiving risk perception associated factors, and eight sub-themes, perceived risk possibility, perceived risk anticipation, perceived severity of consequences, past caregiving experiences, health literacy, psychological status, caregiving burden, and family social support. Conclusion: There were differences in how informal caregivers perceived the risks associated with caring for functionally dependent elderly individuals at home, which various factors could influence. It was essential to provide training that covered the knowledge and skills needed for caregiving, improve caregivers' awareness of safety risks, and establish a correct perception of caregiving risks. The government must construct and refine a comprehensive framework for caregiver respite services. Simultaneously, healthcare professionals should proactively undertake health education endeavors to augment the recognition of care safety risks among informal caregivers, thereby cultivating an accurate awareness of care risk perception. Objective: The health of oral cavity is considered as an important indicator of aging. Oral microbiota is highly associated with the oral health, while the variation of oral microbiome in elderly population and characteristic microbes associated with aging remain unclear. Subjects and methods: In this study, 130 elderly subjects were recruited and divided into 3 groups according to their age: Stage I group (65 ≤ years < 70), Stage II group (70 ≤ years < 75), and Stage III group (75 ≤ years < 80). Their physiological indices were analyzed with using Illumina MiSeq platform and the oral microbiome was determined by high-throughput sequencing. Results: Along with aging, the level of fasting blood glucose, systolic pressure and monocytes are significantly increased. No significant difference was detected on the whole structure of the oral microbiome among groups. While using Metastats and Spearman's correlation analysis, specific bacteria were identified as potential age- or health index-related bacterial genera including Fusobacterium, Parvimonas, Porphyromonas, Aminobacter, Collinsella, Clostridium and Acinetobacter. Conclusion: Our study revealed that the composition structure of salivary microbiota in elderly population was relatively stable while specific bacteria were correlated with age and health status, which is promising to be served as health indicators of the elderly after further exploration. Aim: Negative life events have been reported as a risk factor for depression. However, the mechanism between negative life events and depression is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of sleep quality and the moderating role of economic income in the association between negative life events and depression among older adults aged 60 years and over. Methods: A multi‐stage stratified sampling method was used to select elderly individuals over 60 years old in Shandong, China, making use of the Household Health Interview Survey (2020). In total, 3868 older adults completed the measures of negative life events, sleep quality, depression, and economic income. Results: Negative life events positively predicted depression among the elderly (proportion of direct effect, 55.12%), and poor sleep quality could mediate this association (proportion of indirect effect, 44.87%). Economic income played a moderating role in the relationship between negative life events, sleep quality, and depression (the first and second half of the mediating effect, the direct effect of negative life events on depression). Both effects were weaker among the elderly with higher economic incomes. Conclusions: Negative life events had positive effects on depression in older adults. Economic income moderated the direct effect of negative life events and the mediating effect (first and second half) of sleep quality on depression. Background and aims: The relationship between alcohol consumption and age-related diseases is inconsistent. Biological age (BA) serves as both a precursor and a predictor of age-related diseases; however, longitudinal associations between alcohol consumption and BA in middle-aged and older people remain unclear. We measured whether there was a longitudinal association between drinking frequency and pure alcohol intake with BA among middle-aged and older people. Design and setting and participants: This study involved two prospective cohort studies, set in Southwestern China and the United Kingdom. A total of 8046 participants from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort study (CMEC) and 5412 participants from the UK Biobank (UKB), aged 30-79 years, took part, with complete data from two waves of clinical biomarkers. Measurements: BA was calculated by the Klemera Doubal's method. Accelerated BA equalled BA minus chronological age. Drinking frequency and pure alcohol intake were obtained through self-reported questionnaires. Drinking frequency in the past year was classified as current non-drinking, occasional (monthly drinking) and regular (weekly drinking). Findings: Compared with consistent current non-drinkers, more frequent drinkers [CMEC: β = 0.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.13-0.80; UKB: β = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.01-1.29)], less frequent drinkers (CMEC: β = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.37-0.87; UKB: β = 0.54, 95% CI = -0.01-1.09), consistent occasional drinkers (CMEC: β = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.23-0.79; UKB: β = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.13-1.13) and consistent regular drinkers (CMEC: β = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.17-0.95; UKB: β = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.00-0.91) exhibited increased accelerated BA. A non-linear relationship between pure alcohol intake and accelerated BA was observed among consistent regular drinkers. Conclusions: In middle-aged and older people, any change in drinking frequency and any amount of pure alcohol intake seem to be positively associated with acceleration of biological ageing, compared with maintaining abstinence. This study assessed the effectiveness of the combined use of the Gukang capsule and vitamin D2 for treating elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis. A total of 126 patients admitted to the Second Hospital of Tangshan between March 2021 and March 2023 were recruited. All patients were treated with loxoprofen sodium tablets. Additionally, group 1 was treated with a vitamin D2 soft capsule, group 2 with a Gukang capsule, and group 3 with a vitamin D2 soft capsule+Gukang capsule. The total effective rate in group 3 (95.23%) was significantly higher compared to groups 1 and 2 (76.19% and 73.80%, respectively; P < 0.05). After treatment, the visual analogue scale score, inflammation level, and levels of cartilage metabolic factors in group 3 were significantly lower compared to groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.05). After treatment, the Hospital for Special Surgery and Lysholm scores were elevated in all three groups, and those in group 3 were significantly higher than those in groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.05). There was no difference in the incidence of adverse reactions among the three groups (P > 0.05). Overall, Gukang capsule + vitamin D2 can reduce inflammation, improve cartilage metabolism, accelerate knee function recovery, and improve the clinical effect in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis. Internet of Things (IoT) home care technologies have great potential to support older adults' everyday activities and compensate for age-related changes. This study aims to explore older adults' preferences for IoT home care technologies and factors influencing their acceptance from different perspectives. A total of 19 participants were purposively recruited, including 12 community-dwelling and nursing home older adults (74.8 ± 8.7 years), three adult children (48.3 ± 11.9 years), and four caregivers (43.8 ± 9.4 years). Their experiences and attitudes were explored through semi-structured interviews, assessing their general opinions toward IoT home care technologies and exploring what factors may hinder or facilitate their use. Twenty-two IoT home care services were included and the interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results revealed that community-dwelling older participants preferred entertainment services, while the nursing home group preferred safety services. Eight factors affecting older adults' acceptance of IoT home care technologies were extracted: personality traits, self-health assessment, adult children support, roommate influence, affordability, credibility, compatibility, and substitutability. The impact of generational thrifty personality, adult children's support, and service credibility are highlighted in the Chinese cultural context. Objectives Previous studies and theories show that healthy lifestyles are affected by life chances and subjective perceptions. However, it remains unclear how older adults change between different lifestyle profiles as they age. We proposed the healthy lifestyle duality framework and tested it among older Chinese adults using a longitudinal design. Methods Data were obtained from 4 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Surveys conducted between 2008 and 2018 (N = 31,445). Latent transition analysis and hierarchical multinomial growth curve models were performed to investigate healthy lifestyle profiles and their associations with life chances and subjective perceptions over time. Results Four distinct healthy lifestyle profiles were identified: healthy, risky, low-standard, and mixed groups, and their changes show path dependency. Across 10 years, the proportion of the healthy group ranged from 11.16% to 16.97%. Both life chances and subjective perceptions were longitudinally associated with healthy lifestyles, with age and cohort effects observed. Discussion Our findings support the healthy lifestyle duality framework and reveal that life chances and subjective perceptions influence lifestyle changes over time. Objectives: Parkinson disease (PD) is the third leading cause of mortality among middle‐aged and older individuals in China. This study aimed to explore the trends and distribution features of PD mortality in China from 2013 to 2021 and make predictions for the next few decades. Methods: Relevant data were obtained from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention Disease Surveillance Point system. The joinpoint regression model was used to evaluate trends. The R software was used to predict future trends. Results: Age‐standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of PD increased from 0.59 per 100,000 individuals to 1.22 per 100,000 individuals from 2013 to 2021, with an average annual percent change (AAPC) of 9.50 (95% CI: 8.24–10.78). The all‐age ASMR of PD were higher in male individuals than in female individuals, and ASMR increased with age. The number of deaths and ASMR increased gradually from west to east and from rural to urban areas. Furthermore, ASMR is expected to increase to 2.66 per 100,000 individuals by 2040. Conclusions: The heightened focus on the ASMR of PD among male individuals, urban areas, eastern China, and individuals aged ≥85 years has become a key determinant in further decreasing mortality, thereby exhibiting novel challenges to effective strategies for disease prevention and control. Purpose: To examine the effect of walking interventions on sleep quality of persons with dementia (PWD) and their caregivers (dyads), and how different companions affect results. Method: Forty-five dyads were divided into three groups: a control group and two experimental groups (one with a care attendant, one with a family caregiver). The two experimental groups engaged in 120 minutes of walking per week for 24 weeks. Results: A significant improvement in sleep quality was observed among PWD in the family caregiver group (Wald χ2 = 4.55, p = 0.033), whereas there was no improvement in the care attendant group. A slight improvement in sleep quality of family caregivers was also found. Conclusion: Findings suggest the importance of creating individualized walking activity plans for dyads, incorporating trust and rapport-building strategies to improve sleep quality. Purpose: Older adults frequently encounter health challenges, such as impaired balance and muscle health, which increase risk of falls. The current study investigated the effectiveness of the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) technique in improving balance and muscle health among older adults with high fall risk. Method: A total of 160 older adults with high fall risk were randomized into control and intervention groups. Over 6 months, the control group received standard interventions, while the intervention group received the same interventions and additional PNF training. Results: Both groups demonstrated improvements in balance function over time, with the intervention group exhibiting significant improvements in Berg Balance Scale scores, Timed Up and Go test times, and 30-Second Chair Stand Test counts (p < 0.05). Bone density significantly increased in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05), although no substantial differences in lower limb muscle mass were observed. Satisfaction rates were higher and fall incidents fewer in the intervention group. Conclusion: The PNF technique is effective in enhancing balance function and muscle health in older adults with high fall risk, demonstrating potential in reducing fall risk and improving quality of life among older adults. Objectives: This study examined whether older Chinese adults with different types of hukou status (government household registration system) exhibited different cognitive outcomes and whether receiving support from friends, an under-appreciated resource, helped mitigate the negative impacts of agricultural hukou status on cognitive health disparities. Methods: Using nationally representative data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, this study tested these relationships with well-validated measures. Results: Our results showed that older Chinese adults with agricultural hukou were more likely to have worse cognitive function than those with non-agricultural hukou. Further, friend support characteristics moderated the association between hukou status and cognitive function, whereby having better friend support was related to a weaker negative effect of agricultural hukou status on cognitive function. Discussion: The findings suggested that agricultural hukou status reflects the effects of accumulated disadvantage across the life course with negative consequences for late-life cognition. The cognitive health disparities between agricultural and non-agricultural residents may be reduced in the context of a higher level of friend support, supporting a stress buffering hypothesis. Background Few studies have assessed the comprehensive associations among comorbid diseases in elderly patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study sought to identify potential comorbidity patterns and explore the relationship of comorbidity patterns with the mortality risk in elderly patients with NPC. Methods A total of 452 elderly patients with NPC were enrolled in the study. The network analysis and latent class analysis were applied to mine comorbidity patterns. Propensity score matching was used for adjusting confounders. A restricted cubic spline model was used to analyze the nonlinear association between age and the risk of all-cause mortality. Results We identified 2 comorbidity patterns, metabolic disease-related comorbidity (MDRC) and organ disease-related comorbidity (ODRC) in elderly patients with NPC. Patients in MDRC showed a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality (71.41% vs 87.97%, HR 1.819 [95% CI, 1.106-2.994], P  = .031) and locoregional relapse (68.73% vs 80.88%, HR 1.689 [95% CI, 1.055-2.704], P  = .042). Moreover, in patients with MDRC pattern, we observed an intriguing inverted S-shaped relationship between age and all-cause mortality among patients aged 68 years and older. The risk of mortality up perpetually with age increasing in ODRC group, specifically within the age range of 68-77 years (HR 4.371, 1.958-9.757). Conclusion Our study shed light on the potential comorbidity patterns in elderly patients with NPC, thereby providing valuable insights into the development of comprehensive health management strategies for this specific population. Background: The association of BCAAs (isoleucine, leucine, and valine) with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases has been widely recognized by researchers, but there is limited evidence to support the relationship between BCAAs and multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) in older adults. This study aimed to explore the correlation between BCAA levels in the diets of older adults and MCCs. Methods: Based on a health management cohort project in Nanshan District of Shenzhen, 4278 individuals over 65 years old were selected as participants via multi-stage stratified sampling from May 2018 to December 2019. Data were collected using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, as well as anthropometric and chronic disease reports. MCC was defined as the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases, namely, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, CAD, stroke, CKD, and CLD. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between dietary BCAAs and MCCs in older adults, and then, gender stratification analysis was performed. A restricted cubic spline model (a fitted smooth curve) was used to determine the dose–response relationship of isoleucine with MCCs. Results: A total of 4278 older adults aged 65 and above were included in this study, with an average age of 72.73 ± 5.49 years. The cohort included 1861 males (43.50%). Regardless of whether confounding factors were corrected, isoleucine was a risk factor for MCCs (OR = 3.388, 95%CI:1.415,8.109). After gender stratification, the relationships between dietary isoleucine and MCCs (OR = 6.902, 95%CI:1.875,25.402) and between leucine (OR = 0.506,95%CI:0.309,0.830) and MCCs were significant in women, but not in men. No significant association between valine and MCCs was observed. In addition, isoleucine was a risk factor for MCCs when its intake was greater than 4.297 g/d. Introduction: In China, the proportion of the elderly population is gradually increasing, followed by the increasing medical demands of elderly patients. Hip fracture is a common fracture in the elderly. The elderly are prone to serious postoperative complications, resulting in failure to restore normal hip function, which seriously affects patients' quality of life and further increases their mortality rate. Thus, hip fracture represents a remarkable public health issue within the realm of geriatric medical care. Significance: This study systematically evaluated the impact of comprehensive rehabilitation training, with a focus on balance function, on elderly individuals with hip fractures' postoperative recovery and functional outcomes. Result: Results showed a significant difference in BBS scores favoring comprehensive rehabilitation training based on balance function over conventional intervention. Similarly, AM-PAC scores favored the balance-focused training. TUTG meta-analysis indicated its adoption in comprehensive rehabilitation training. FIM scores showed improvement with balance-focused training. Harris score meta-analysis also favored this approach. A funnel plot analysis revealed potential publication bias, likely due to study heterogeneity and limited publications. Conclusions: In conclusion, comprehensive rehabilitation training centered around balance function displayed clinical efficacy in enhancing postoperative hip joint function in elderly hip fracture patients. Objective: Early identification of cognitive impairment in older adults could reduce the burden of age-related disabilities. Gait parameters are associated with and predictive of cognitive decline. Although a variety of sensors and machine learning analysis methods have been used in cognitive studies, a deep optimized machine vision-based method for analyzing gait to identify cognitive decline is needed. Methods: This study used a walking footage dataset of 158 adults named West China Hospital Elderly Gait, which was labelled by performance on the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire. We proposed a novel recognition network, Deep Optimized GaitPart (DO-GaitPart), based on silhouette and skeleton gait images. Three improvements were applied: short-term temporal template generator (STTG) in the template generation stage to decrease computational cost and minimize loss of temporal information; depth-wise spatial feature extractor (DSFE) to extract both global and local fine-grained spatial features from gait images; and multi-scale temporal aggregation (MTA), a temporal modeling method based on attention mechanism, to improve the distinguishability of gait patterns. Results: An ablation test showed that each component of DO-GaitPart was essential. DO-GaitPart excels in backpack walking scene on CASIA-B dataset, outperforming comparison methods, which were GaitSet, GaitPart, MT3D, 3D Local, TransGait, CSTL, GLN, GaitGL and SMPLGait on Gait3D dataset. The proposed machine vision gait feature identification method achieved a receiver operating characteristic/area under the curve (ROCAUC) of 0.876 (0.852-0.900) on the cognitive state classification task. Background: Health literacy is one of the important determinants of healthy aging, yet few studies have focused on the association between health literacy and falls. Aims: This study aims to explore the relationship between health literacy and falls, with a focus on sex differences among older people in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 2,144 older people aged ≥ 60 years from Shandong Province, China in 2021. We used general health literacy screening scale to assess health literacy, and collected the incidence of falls in the past year. Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the relationship between health literacy and falls. We investigated the sex differences by subgroup analyses. Results: The prevalence of adequate health literacy and falls was 21.7% (95% CI: 20.0–23.5%) and 25.4% (95% CI: 23.6–27.3%), respectively. In a fully-adjusted model, adequate health literacy was associated with a lower prevalence of falls in older adults (OR = 0.71, 95%CI: 0.52–0.96). Subgroup analysis revealed sex differences in this relationship (Pfor interaction <0.05). Specifically, the female group showed no significant relationship between health literacy and falls (OR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.59–1.44); however, the male group demonstrated a robust and significant relationship (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37–0.90). Conclusions: Older people with adequate health literacy have lower prevalence of falls, which appears to differ by sex. This relationship was significant among men but not among women. These findings emphasize the need for policymakers and healthcare providers to consider sex differences when designing and implementing programs aimed at improving health literacy and preventing falls in the older population. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a risk prediction model for motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) in older adults. Methods: Participants were selected from the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database and randomly assigned to the training group and the validation group, with proportions of 70% and 30%, respectively. LASSO regression analysis was used to screen the predictors. Then, identified predictors were included in multivariate logistic regression analysis and used to construct model nomogram. The performance of the model was evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), calibration curves and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: 528 out of 3962 participants (13.3%) developed MCR. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that weakness, chronic pain, limb dysfunction score, visual acuity score and Five-Times-Sit-To-Stand test were predictors of MCR in older adults. Using these factors, a nomogram model was constructed. The AUC values for the training and validation sets of the predictive model were 0.735 (95% CI = 0.708–0.763) and 0.745 (95% CI = 0.705–0.785), respectively. Background: Sarcopenia has been reported to play an important role in frailty syndrome. The serum creatinine/serum cystatin C ratio (Scr/Cys C ratio) has recently been recognized as a valuable indicator for assessing sarcopenia. However, few studies have examined the association between serum creatinine/serum cystatin C ratio and frailty. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between the serum creatinine/serum cystatin C ratio and frailty among older adults residing in the community. Methods and materials: A Total of 1926 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 60 years in the 2011 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included. The participants' frailty status was determined using a 39 item frailty index (FI), which classified individuals as "robust" (FI ≤ 0.1), "pre-frailty" (0.1 < FI < 0.25), or "frailty" (FI ≥ 0.25). The Scr/Cys C ratio was determined by dividing the serum creatinine level (mg/dL) by the cystatin C level (mg/L). The one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Chi-squared test (χ2)were applied to compare the differences between the 3 groups. Both linear regression and logistic regression models were used to further investigate the relationship between Scr/Cys C ratio and frailty. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the study revealed that participants in the Q1 quartile of Scr/Cys C ratio had increased odds of frailty (Q1vs.Q4: OR = 1.880, 95% CI 1.126–3.139, p = 0.016) compared with those in the Q4 quartile group. In fully adjusted logistic regression models, male participants in the Q2 quartile of Scr/Cys C ratio were significantly correlated with higher odds of pre-frailty (Q2 vs.Q4: OR = 1.693, 95%CI 1.040–2.758, p = 0.034). However, this correlation was not observed in females (OR = 0.984, 95% CI 0.589–1.642, p = 0.950,). Additionally, the study observed an increase in both the frailty index and the incidence of frailty as age increased in both males and females. • The dietary intake of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is imbalanced. • The insufficient fruit intake was associated with a higher risk of T2DM. • Indicators of Dietary Balance Index-16 may predict the risk of T2DM. The association between dietary quality and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) based on the Chinese Dietary Balance Index (DBI-16) is seldom reported. We hypothesized that poor dietary quality might increase the risk of T2DM in the middle-aged and older populations. A total of 1816 individuals (≥50 years) were included in the study. Demographic characteristics and dietary intake data were collected. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were conducted to explore the association between DBI-16 indexes and the risk of T2DM. The insufficient intake of vegetables and dairy might decrease the risk of T2DM (OR Vegetable = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.60-0.97; OR Dairy = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.35-0.96), but the individuals with insufficient intake of fruit were more likely to have a higher risk of T2DM (OR fruit = 2.26, 95% CI = 1.69-3.06). Compared with the subjects with the lowest quartile of Low Bound Score (LBS) or Diet Quality Distance (DQD), the individuals with Q2 and Q3 level of LBS (OR Q2 = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.03-1.90, P =.033; OR Q3 = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.11-2.08, P <.01) or DQD (OR Q2 = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.06-1.99, P =.021; OR Q3 = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.20-2.24, P <.01) showed increased risk of T2DM with a nonlinear association observed by RCS analysis. We concluded that imbalanced dietary intake, especially insufficient daily fruit intake, might predict an increased risk of T2DM in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Background: Understanding the development of cognitive impairment and its influencing factors in older adults is crucial for formulating early intervention strategies. Purpose: To identify the early dimensions of cognitive impairment and provide a comprehensive description of the trajectories of cognitive decline in older adults prior to death. Methods: Based on the data of 9883 older adults in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2002 to 2018, a longitudinal item response theory (Longitudinal IRT) model including covariates was applied to estimate the following parameters. The items in which older adults encountered obstacles first had the least difficulty parameters (δ). The earlier the information curve of an item is lifted, the more information it provides in the early stages of cognitive impairment. Regression coefficient (β) represents the relative rate of cognitive decline. The cognitive impairment values estimated from the Longitudinal IRT were fitted to a mixed‐effects model to examine cognitive impairment trajectories. Results: 'Draw the figure on B Card' (δ = −0.816) was the most challenging item, followed by 'recalling 'clothes" (δ = 0.348) and 'recalling 'apples" (δ = 0.419), while 'name the 'pen" (δ = 4.402) was the simplest instruction for the old adults. The curves of the items in the recall dimension began to rise in the early stages of cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment of older adults who were women (β = 0.061), elder (β = 0.111), smokers (β = 0.060), living in rural areas (β = 0.052), not participating in organised social activities (β = 0.092), suffering from hypertension (β = 0.022), hyperglycaemia (β = 0.035), dyslipidaemia (β = 0.314), low education levels (β = 0.128), manual labourers (β = 0.027), and eventual development of dementia (β = 0.212) exhibited a more accelerated progression. These individuals also had poorer cognitive trajectories. Conclusion: Recall is the earliest dimension of cognitive impairment. Objective: This study aimed to examine the characteristics of assistive device users and influencing factors among disabled elderly in China. Methods: A total of 13,510 disabled elderly in Sichuan Province were surveyed. Disability was assessed using the Barthel Activities of Daily Living Scale, mental status, sensory perception, and social engagement evaluation. Univariate analysis and logistic regression analysis were employed to identify the impact factors. Results: The prevalence of assistive device utilization among participants was 79.2% (10,700/13,510, 95% CI 78.5%–79.9%), with the wheelchair being the most commonly used device. Various factors were found to influence the usage of the device, including disability level, somatic disability, age, caregivers, income, caregiver fees, and living situation (p <.05). Additionally, several factors were identified associated with the frequency of device usage, such as somatic disability, education background, income, caregiver fees, living situation, access to acquire assistive devices, duration of assistive device usage, education on assistive devices, and satisfaction level (p <.05). Conclusions: The use of assistive devices among elderly individuals in China is prevalent. This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of fictive kin interaction on the physical health and psychological well-being of older adults living in a shared site nursing home in China. The results revealed that depression levels significantly decreased and self-efficacy and flourishing levels significantly increased among the participants who engaged in additional one-to-one pair activities with kindergartners, with the effect size ranging from medium to large. The research findings indicated that one-to-one fictive kinship interactions between older adults and young children can promote the self-perceived physical health and psychological well-being of older adults in a Chinese context. Evidence on the association between garden work and risk of incident dementia in the older Chinese population is limited. This study aimed to explore the association between the frequency of garden work and risk of incident dementia in an older population in China. This was a national cohort study. This study analysed data from 8676 participants (median age: 86 years) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association between the frequency of garden work and risk of incident dementia using hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Multiplicative and additive interaction effects were calculated between the frequency of garden work and age, sex or residence on incident dementia; subgroup analyses of the association were also conducted by age, sex and residence. In addition, sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of the results. During 4.31 years (median) of follow-up, 633 participants developed dementia. Compared with participants who did not engage in garden work, the adjusted risk of incident dementia for those who regularly or almost daily engaged in garden work decreased by 28% (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.57−0.93). An additive interaction effect between frequency of garden work and age on incident dementia was observed, with subgroup analyses demonstrating similar statistically significant associations among participants aged ≥85 years, women and city or town residents. Sensitivity analyses were consistent with the primary analysis in the present study. Frequent engagement in garden work may be associated with a reduced risk of dementia and may be an effective measure to prevent incident dementia in the older population in China. BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease frequently experience problems with balance and gait. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influences of regular ankle isokinetic muscle strength training on muscle strength and balance ability amongst elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A total of 55 elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease were randomly divided into the experimental group (n = 28) and the control group (n = 27) for 16 weeks. The experimental group was trained for 16 weeks by using isokinetic muscle strength training. RESULTS: After 16 weeks of training in the experimental group, the peak torque (PT) of ankle (average of the left and right sides) dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion, and the standing balance index revealed that the left and right stability and overall stability indexes significantly increased by 25.9%, 43.5%, 62.7%, 82.8%, 37.1% and 32.2%, respectively (p < 0.05). The experimental group exhibited significantly increased PT of ankle dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion. Moreover, the left and right stability and overall stability indexes were significantly improved compared with those of the control group (p < 0.05). This study found a linear regression relationship between the PT of ankle inversion and overall stability index. CONCLUSION: This study determined that ankle isokinetic muscle strength training improved ankle dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion muscle strength, and balance ability amongst elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease. Aim: To analyse the risk factors and incidence of falls in geriatric outpatients in a university hospital ward in Hangzhou, China. Methods: From May 2020 to August 2022, 1712 geriatric outpatients in a university hospital ward in Hangzhou, China, were screened using a socio‐demographic questionnaire (e.g. gender, age, living arrangement, etc.) and assessment scales. The correlation between each factor and falls was preliminarily analysed by chi‐squared tests. Finally, binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to further analyse the risk factors of falls. The STROBE checklist was used in reporting this study. Results: Of the 1712 geriatric outpatients recruited, 1626 participants (60–79 and ≥ 80 years old) with complete questionnaire and assessment data were included. The occurrence of falls for those in the 60–79 age group was 8.4%, and for those in the ≥80 age group it was 13.4%. Age (p =.007), use of a walking assistance device (p <.001), the Stay Independent Brochure Questionnaire (SIB) (OR = 7.751, 95% CI = 5.089–11.806, p <.001), living arrangement (p =.004), timed up and go test (TUGT) (p =.007) and three diseases or above (OR = 2.496, 95% CI = 1.358–11.4.586, p =.003) reached statistical significance. Conclusions: Older people have a high incidence of falls. In this study, age, disease history, SIB scores (≥4 points), living arrangement, TUGT and walking assistance device increased the probability of falls in older Chinese adults. Personalised interventions should be carried out according to the specific situation of older people to effectively reduce their incidence of falls and improve their quality of life. Aim and objectives: To investigate the nutritional status of older adults in nursing homes in Chongqing, China, compare and analyse the differences in the physical condition, cognitive function and social‐related factors of older adults with different nutritional statuses. Background: Malnurtition in the older people has become a priority concer, and the incidence and factors associated with malnutrition vary somewhat by healthcare setting. In Chongqing ,China, there is lack of research on malnutrition of the older people in nursing homes. Here, we investigated the incidence of malnutrition and analysed the associated factors. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: From January to April 2023, a cross‐sectional survey was conducted in three nursing homes in Chongqing, China. Participants completed a series of questionnaires, including the Demographic Information Questionnaire which included age, gender, education level, previous occupation, marital status and other information. The survey also included validated non‐demographic instruments [Short‐Form Mini‐Nutritional Assessment (MNA‐SF), Barthel Index (BI) and Mini‐mental State Examination (MMSE)] to identify related impact factors. The Guidelines for cross‐sectional studies were used in this study (Data S1). Results: 209 older adults aged 60 and over participated in this study, of whom 121 were women and 88 were men. The average (SD) age of the participants was 84.7 (6.3) years. Of the participants, 46.4% were classified as well nourished. About 39.2% were at risk of malnutrition and 14.4% were malnourished. Compared to those who were well nourished, those who were malnourished or at risk of becoming malnourished were more likely to suffer from comorbidities, polypharmacy, a higher risk of falling, ADL dependence and to receive more nutritional interventions. However, there are no significant differences after adjustment for age, education level, previous occupation, marital status, length of stay, and type of health care payment. Conclusion: Malnutrition is a common problem among older adults innursing homes in Chongqing, China. There are certain differences in physical conditions and nutritional interventions among older adults withdifferent nutritional status. BACKGROUND: Evidence suggested that abiotic airborne exposures may be associated with changes in body composition. However, more evidence is needed to identify key pollutants linked to adverse health effects and their underlying biomolecular mechanisms, particularly in sensitive older adults. OBJECTIVES: Our research aimed to systematically assess the relationship between abiotic airborne exposures and changes in body composition among healthy older adults, as well as the potential mediating mechanisms through the serum lipidome. METHODS: From September 2018 to January 2019, we conducted a monthly survey among 76 healthy adults (60–69 years old) in the China Biomarkers of Air Pollutant Exposure (BAPE) study, measuring their personal exposures to 632 abiotic airborne pollutions using MicroPEM and the Fresh Air wristband, 18 body composition indicators from the InBody 770 device, and lipidomics from venous blood samples. We used an exposome-wide association study (ExWAS) and deletion/substitution/addition (DSA) model to unravel complex associations between exposure to contaminant mixtures and body composition, a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model to assess the overall effect of key exposures on body composition, and mediation analysis to identify lipid intermediators. RESULTS: The ExWAS and DSA model identified that 2,4,5-T methyl ester (2,4,5-TME), 9,10-Anthracenedione (ATQ), 4b,8-dimethyl-2-isopropylphenanthrene, and 4b,5,6,7,8,8a,9,10-octahydro-(DMIP) were associated with increased body fat mass (BFM), fat mass indicators (FMI), percent body fat (PBF), and visceral fat area (VFA) in healthy older adults [Bonferroni-Hochberg false discovery rate (FDRBH)<0.05]. The BKMR model demonstrated a positive correlation between contaminants (anthracene, ATQ, copaene, di-epi-a-cedrene, and DMIP) with VFA. Mediation analysis revealed that phosphatidylcholine [PC, PC(16:1e/18:1), PC(16:2e/18:0)] and sphingolipid [SM, SM(d18:2/24:1)] mediated a significant portion, ranging from 12.27% to 26.03% (푝-value <0.05), of the observed increase in VFA. DISCUSSION: Based on the evidence from multiple model results, ATQ and DMIP were statistically significantly associated with the increased VFA levels of healthy older adults, potentially regulated through lipid intermediators. These findings may have important implications for identifying potentially harmful environmental chemicals and developing targeted strategies for the control and prevention of chronic diseases in the future, particularly as the global population is rapidly aging. Background: Constipation is common in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage. This study aimed to construct a model for predicting the risk of constipation in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage and to provide reference for formulating targeted intervention measures. Methods: Elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage who were treated in the department of Neurosurgery of a third-class hospital in Suzhou from January 2018 to September 2023 were included. Clinical data of patients with and without constipation were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, and R software was used to construct a line chart model to verify its predictive effect. Results: A total of 504 elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage were included. The incidence of constipation in elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage was 63.9%. Logistic regression analysis showed that GCS score (OR = 1.094, 95%CI: 1.019∼1.174), hypertension (OR = 2.911, 95%CI: 1.797∼4.715), use of dehydrating agent (OR = 3.794, 95%CI: 2.337∼6.158), surgical treatment (OR = 3.986, 95%CI: 2.339∼6.793), use of sedative drugs (OR = 4.212, 95%CI:2.386-7.435), and limb paralysis (OR = 6.313, 95%CI:3.689∼10.803) were the independent risk factors for constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. The area under the ROC curve of the prediction model was 0.872 (95%CI: 0.8401∼0.9033), the best critical value was 0.705, the sensitivity was 0.748, and the specificity was 0.857. Conclusion: The constipation risk prediction model of elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage has good differentiation and calibration, which is helpful for health care providers to identify the risk of constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. Objective: To evaluate the performance of the pneumonia severity index (PSI), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II), and simplified acute physiology score III (SAPS III) in predicting mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) who underwent invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in the emergency intensive care unit (EICU). Methods: A retrospective study was performed using the clinical data of older patients with CAP (who underwent IMV in the EICU), analyzed using APACHE II, SAPS III, and PSI. Logistic regression was used to analyze independent risk factors for mortality in these patients. The predictive values of APACHE II, SAPS III, and PSI for mortality were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: In total, 101 patients were enrolled. The logistic regression analysis showed that APACHE II was an independent risk factor for mortality in the older patients with CAP who underwent IMV (OR = 1.42, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.23-1.63, p < 0.001). The areas under the ROC curve (AUROC) corresponding to PSI, APACHE II, and SAPS III were 0.733, 0.837, and 0.700, respectively, and the AUROC of APACHE II was significantly higher than those of PSI and SAPS III (p < 0.05). The maximum Youden index of APACHE IIwas 0.548, and the corresponding scorewas 18.5. The sensitivity and specificity of APACHE II in predicting mortality were 88.1% and 66.7%, respectively. Background and Purpose: Sarcopenia is a common muscle disease among the older population, posing an increased risk for functional decline and loss of independence in daily living. Early detection of sarcopenia among older people before functional decline would be beneficial in enhancing their quality of life. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 recommends the use of 3 screening methods for community-based sarcopenia detection: calf circumference (CC), or the Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls (SARC-F) questionnaire, or the SARC-F in combination with CC (SARC-CalF) questionnaire. This study aims to compare the relative performance of these 3 methods as screening tools for sarcopenia within a community-dwelling older population. Methods: A total of 700 community-dwelling older adults participated in the current study. Muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance were measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis, handgrip strength, and gait speed, respectively. The AWGS 2019 criteria were considered the criterion standard The sensitivity/specificity, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analyses were determined for CC, SARC-F, and SARC-CalF to determine their relative diagnostic performance. Results: Sarcopenia was identified in 21.4% of participants according to the AWGS2019 criteria. The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 56.6%, 14.7%, and 22.9% according to CC, SARC-F, and SARC-CalF, respectively. Calf circumference showed the highest sensitivity but lowest specificity based on AWGS 2019 as the criterion standard regardless of age, gender, and body mass index. The SARC-CalF showed better sensitivity but similar specificity than the SARC-F. The AUROC of CC was significantly better than that of SARC-F and SARC-CalF. The AUROCs of CC, SARC-F, and SARC-CalF were statistically significant in all populations, as well as in the categories of age, gender, and body mass index (P < .05). Conclusions: Calf circumference is useful in ruling out the presence of sarcopenia while the SARC-F is more effec-tive in ruling in sarcopenia, especially in the context of population-based screening. The Assessment of Physical Activity in Frail Older People (APAFOP) is a patient-reported outcome measure assessing physical activity among community-dwelling older adults. However, this instrument has not been verified in the Chinese context. Thus, we translated the APAFOP into Chinese and then linguistically validated the Chinese version of APAFOP (APAFOP-C) by following the guidelines developed by Beaton and Willis. The translation process took 6 months. We identified nine translation issues in the translation process, of which experiential equivalence issues were the most frequent. It took three rounds of cognitive interviews to achieve linguistic validity, and the most significant issues were related to the layout of the questionnaire identified during the cognitive interview. In conclusion, the items of the APAFOP-C were considered comprehensive and relevant to assessing the physical activities of frail older adults in China. Older adults are not actively participating in outdoor physical activities. An understanding of what factors influence older adults' outdoor physical activities is important for informing interventions. This study aims to examine the potential effect of service ontology on the intention of outdoor physical activities in older adults. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with 421 older adults from eight districts in Nanjing, China. One-way analysis of variance and ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that seven of the 20 factors have a positive effect on intention of outdoor physical activities, including gender, health self-assessment, family structure, accessibility, exercise instructors, emergency service, and staff in outdoor space. To further improve the intention of outdoor physical activities, governments and service designers should focus on providing age-friendly community infrastructures. Moreover, specific attention should be paid toward older females and people with low-income/poor health conditions, and strategies should also be adopted to significantly improve the quantity and instruction efficiency of exercise instructors. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intranasal insulin on postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in elderly patients after laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer. Methods: Older patients scheduled for laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer at Beijing Luhe Hospital, Capital Medical University, between August 2023 and November 2023, were enrolled in this double-blind pilot study. Patients were randomized to the control and insulin groups at a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome was the rate of POCD at postoperative 7 days. Results: A total of 61 patients (30 in the insulin group) were analyzed. The insulin group had a significantly lower POCD rate compared with the control group at postoperative day 7 [4(13.3%) vs. 12 (38.7%), p = 0.024]. The serum levels of IL-6, TNF-α and S100β at T2-5 in the insulin group were significantly lower than those of the control group (IL-6: mean difference at T2, -4.14, p = 0.036; T3, -3.84, p = 0.039; T4, -3.37, p = 0.013; T5, -2.57, p = 0.042; TNF-α: mean difference at T2, -3.19, p = 0.002; T3, -2.35, p = 0.028; T4, -2.30, p = 0.019; T5, -1.96, p = 0.0181; S100β: mean difference at T2, -8.30, p = 0.019; T3, -23.95, p = 0.020; T4, -20.01, p = 0.023; T5, -17.67, p = 0.010). No insulin allergic reactions, nasal irritation, or hypoglycemic reactions were observed in either of the groups. Conclusion: Intranasal insulin may decrease the risk of POCD and inhibit the elevated serum IL-6, TNF-α, and S100β levels in elderly patients after laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer, which proves that intranasal insulin may be a promising therapeutic option for POCD. Background: Hearing loss and tinnitus have been linked to mild cognitive impairment (MCI); however, the evidence is constrained by ethical and temporal constraints, and few prospective studies have definitively established causation. This study aims to utilize Mendelian randomization (MR) and cross-sectional studies to validate and analyze this association. Methods: This study employs a two-step approach. Initially, the genetic data of the European population from the Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) database is utilized to establish the causal relationship between hearing loss and cognitive impairment through Mendelian randomization using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method. This is achieved by identifying strongly correlated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), eliminating linkage disequilibrium, and excluding weak instrumental variables. In the second step, 363 elderly individuals from 10 communities in Qingdao, China are assessed and examined using methods questionnaire survey and pure tone audiology (PTA). Logistic regression and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the risk factors of MCI in the elderly and to calculate the cutoff values. Results: Mendelian randomization studies have shown that hearing loss is a risk factor for MCI in European populations, with a risk ratio of hearing loss to MCI loss of 1. 23. The findings of this cross-sectional study indicate that age, tinnitus, and hearing loss emerged as significant risk factors for MCI in univariate logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analysis identified hearing loss and tinnitus as potential risk factors for MCI. Consistent results were observed in multiple linear regression analysis, revealing that hearing loss and age significantly influenced the development of MCI. Additionally, a notable finding was that the likelihood of MCI occurrence increased by 9% when the hearing threshold exceeded 20 decibels. Conclusion: This study provides evidence from genomic and epidemiological investigations indicating that hearing loss may serve as a risk factor for cognitive impairment. While our epidemiological study has found both hearing loss and tinnitus as potential risk factors for cognitive decline, additional research is required to establish a causal relationship, particularly given that tinnitus can manifest as a symptom of various underlying medical conditions. "Exercise is the best medicine" is well known, but the optimal dose of physical activity (PA) for males and females across different age groups is still unknown. This study, using data from the four waves of CHARLS, aimed to determine the optimal PA dose that reduces frailty risks among older adults across various age groups and both sexes. We created a frailty index score using 63 health-related variables and used 0.21 as the frailty cut point. Binary logistic regression was used to compare the effect of vigorous, moderate, and light intensity PA under IPAQ criteria on frailty risk. The study found that regardless of whether males or females, the optimal effect of vigorous-intensity PA in reducing the risk of frailty is consistently observed throughout the entire old age career. Moreover, the age groups at which moderate-intensity PA reduces the risk of frailty were from age 70 for males and from age 80 for females. And light-intensity PA had no effect on reducing the risk of frailty. Moderate and vigorous intensity of PA in older adults should be promoted, but guidelines and recommendations must account for optimal associations with PA dose across genders and age groups. Objectives: To explore latent profiles of care dependency in older stroke patients with comorbidities and to analyze the factors influencing different latent profiles. Methods: A total of 312 older ischemic stroke patients with comorbidities were included in the analysis. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to classify the participants into potential subgroups with different types of care dependency. The influencing factors of the classification of care dependency subgroups were determined using multivariate Logistic regression analysis. Results: The care dependency score of older ischemic stroke patients with comorbidities was (51.35 ± 13.19), and the patients could be classified into 3 profiles, namely Universal dependency (24.0%), Moderate activity-sociallearning dependency (28.0%), and Mild activity-social-learning dependency (48.0%); caregiver, BI at admission, and functional impairments were independent factors influencing care dependency (P < 0.05). Conclusion: There are three latent profiles of care dependency in older ischemic stroke patients with comorbidities. According to the characteristics of various populations, medical staff are able to implement specific interventions to lower the level of dependency and further improve the quality of life of patients. Background: Patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) are at high risk for falls, which is attributed to their impaired balance control. Identifying factors associated with balance control facilitates the development of precise KOA rehabilitation programs. This study was to investigate the correlations of balance control with proprioception, plantar tactile sensation (PTS), pain, joint range of motion (ROM), and strength among older adults with and without KOA, as well as the magnitudes and sequence of correlation of these factors to balance control. Methods: A total of 240 older adults with (n = 124, female: 84, age: 68.8 ± 4.0 years) and without (n = 116, female: 64, age: 67.9 ± 3.5 years) KOA were recruited and assigned to the KOA and control groups. Their proprioception, PTS, pain, ROM, and strength were measured. Pearson or Spearman correlations were used to test whether they were significantly related to their Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and factor analysis and multivariate linear regression were used to determine the degrees of correlation between each factor and the BBS. Results: Compared to the control group, the KOA group had lower BBS score, larger proprioception and PTS thresholds, smaller ROM, and less strength (p: 0.008, < 0.001–0.016, < 0.001–0.005, < 0.001–0.014, and < 0.001–0.002, respectively). In the KOA group, the BBS was weakly to moderately correlated with proprioception, PTS, pain, ROM, and strength (r: 0.332–0.501, 0.197–0.291, 0.340, 0.212–0.508, and 0.236–0.336, respectively). While in the control group, the BBS was correlated with proprioception and strength (r: 0.207–0.379, and 0.212–0.410). In the KOA group, BBS = 54.41+ (0.668*strength) - (0.579*PTS) - (1.141*proprioception) + (1.054* ROM) - (0.339*pain). While in the control group, BBS = 53.85+ (0.441*strength) - (0.677*proprioception). Conclusion: Worse proprioception and PTS, smaller ROM, and less strength were detected among older adults with KOA, and their proprioception, PTS, pain, ROM, and strength were all related to balance control. Proprioception had the strongest correlations, followed by ROM, strength, pain, and PTS. Precise KOA rehabilitation programs may be proposed following the sequence of improving the five factors. Objectives: To explore the association between drinking water sources and cognitive functioning among older adults residing in rural China. Methods: Data were extracted from the 2008–2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Drinking water sources were categorized according to whether purification measures were employed. The Chinese version of the Mini‐Mental State Examination was used for cognitive functioning assessment, and the score of <24 was considered as having cognitive dysfunction. Cox regression analyses were conducted to derive hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the effects of various drinking water sources, changes in such sources, and its interaction with exercise on cognition dysfunction. Results: We included 2304 respondents aged 79.67 ± 10.02 years; of them, 1084 (44.49%) were men. Our adjusted model revealed that respondents consistently drinking tap water were 21% less likely to experience cognitive dysfunction compared with those drinking untreated water (HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.70–0.90). Respondents transitioning from natural to tap water showed were 33% less likely to experience cognitive dysfunction (HR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.58–0.78). Moreover, the HR (95% CI) for the interaction between drinking tap water and exercising was 0.86 (0.75–1.00) when compared with that between drinking untreated water and not exercising. All results adjusted for age, occupation, exercise, and body mass index. Conclusions: Prolonged tap water consumption and switching from untreated water to tap water were associated with a decreased risk of cognitive dysfunction in older individuals. Additionally, exercising and drinking tap water was synergistically associated with the low incidence of cognitive dysfunction. These findings demonstrate the importance of prioritizing drinking water health in rural areas, indicating that purified tap water can enhance cognitive function among older adults. Objective: This article intends to reveal the long-term effects of physical maltreatment in childhood on depressive symptoms in later life in China. Methods: Data were drawn from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). 8676 respondents aged 45 and older were included in the study. In this study, we use ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models to estimate the long-term impact on children of physical punishment from their parents. Results: We found that individuals who recalled being hit by their mother in early life reported more depressive symptoms than those who recalled being punished by their father. Difficult family contexts (e.g., comparative poverty, family violence, and parent's poor mental health) had a weak association with higher risk of reporting physical maltreatment and more depressive symptoms among respondents in later life. Conclusion: This article extended the exploration of the long-term impact of child physical maltreatment beyond adolescence and into until later adult life. This study aimed to explore the association between dependency and cognitive function among older adults. A combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study was conducted in 26 locations in China. A total of 1160 participants aged ≥ 60 years were selected using a complex multistage sampling design, and 152 participants completed data collection after one year follow-up observation. A questionnaire was administered by face-to-face interviews. Dependency was measured using the standardized Chinese version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-II. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between dependency and cognitive function. Cox proportional hazards analysis was performed to identify causality between cognition function and dependency. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the orientation and outdoor instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) domains were significantly associated with dependency, with odds ratios of 1.45 (95% CI, 1.26–1.67; p < 0.001) and 1.16 (95% CI, 1.06–1.26; p < 0.001), respectively. In the Cox proportional hazards analysis, the DASC-21 score was significantly associated with dependency, with hazard ratio of 1.32 (95% CI, 1.03–1.69). Understanding the preferences of old-age adults for their long-term caregivers can improve person-centred health care and the quality of long-term care (LTC). This study examines Chinese older adults' preferences for long-term caregivers. This is a cross-sectional study. A national representative discrete choice experiment (DCE) surveyed 2031 adults aged 50–70 across 12 provinces in China. Each DCE scenario described five attributes: type of caregivers, place of LTC, contents of LTC, out-of-pocket payments, and quality of life (QoL). Preferences and the marginal willingness to pay (WTP) were derived using mixed-logit and latent class models. Older adults displayed higher preferences for long-term caregivers who improve their QoL, incur lower out-of-pocket payments, and provide medical LTC services at home, with the maximum WTP of $22.832 per month. QoL was rated as the most important LTC factor, followed by the place of LTC and the type of caregivers. When the level of QoL improved from poor to good, respondents would be willing to pay $18.375 per month more (95% confidence interval: 16.858 to 20.137), and the uptake rate increased by 76.47%. There was preference heterogeneity among older people with different sex, education, family size, and knowledge of LTC insurance. QoL was the most important factor in older Chinese adults' preference for caregivers. Home care and medical care from formal caregivers was preferred by older adults. We recommend training family caregivers, raising older people's awareness of LTC insurance, and guiding policymakers in developing people-oriented LTC and a multi-level LTC system. The widespread application of QR code technology is best represented by the health codes used in China's pandemic prevention and control. This technology has enhanced the country's ability to manage the pandemic by achieving higher efficiency and accuracy. Unfortunately, a certain segment of the older population has encountered difficulties in adapting and maintaining their daily activities. This indicates the limitations of QR code technology in achieving social isolation. This article argues that for a more comprehensive pandemic prevention and control policy system to be established, managing the implementation of this very technology should be done in a more humane fashion, i.e. under the guidance of three moral principles: benevolence, justice, and non-maleficence. By doing so, implementation of QR code technology is done in a way that is not only conducive to COVID-19 prevention and control but also mitigate marginalization of the older people. In the post-pandemic era, the socialization of digital technology will accelerate. Therefore, in the field of public health, we should direct attention not only to the fair distribution of resources but also to the issue of identity that arises due to digital divide.
