Clerodendrum japonicum (C. japonicum) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used to treat the dozens of diseases in China. However, scientific evidence for the pulmonary fibrosis (PF) treatment of C. japonicum used in traditional medicine is lacking. This study evaluated whether C. japonicum ameliorates the PF and the potential molecular mechanism of C. japonicum treatment in vivo and in vitro. We used the PF rat model in vivo. The lung coefficient, HE and Masson staining were used to evaluate the lung tissues injury. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to evaluate the organelle structural changes. The inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1 and TNF-α were detected using ELISA assay. ROS, MDA and GSH were measured to explore the oxidative stress. Western blotting, immunofluorescence (IF) and RT-qPCR were performed to observe the expressions of PF and TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway related genes and proteins. Firstly, C. japonicum could effectively alleviate the PF injury in rat model. C. japonicum could effectively inhibit the levels of inflammatory factors in PF animal model, at the same time, C. japonicum could reasonably regulate oxidative stress factors in PF animal model. Furthermore, TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway was involved in the PF animal model and C. japonicum could inhibit the TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway in PF treatment effectively. C. japonicum might attenuate the PF in the PF rat model in vivo through inhibiting the TGF-β/Smad3 signaling pathway. In China, Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent central nervous system (CNS) degenerative illness affecting middle-aged and older persons. Movement disorders including resting tremor, bradykinesia, myotonia, postural instability, and gait instability are the predominant clinical symptoms. The two main types of PD are sporadic and familial, with sporadic PD being the more prevalent of the two. The environment, genetics, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, protein aggregation and misfolding, loss of trophic factors, cell death, and gut microbiota may all have a role in the etiology of PD. PD is inversely connected with other cancers and positively correlated with COVID-19, diabetes mellitus (DM), melanoma, and ischemic heart disease (IHD) risk. Delaying disease progression, managing motor and non-motor symptoms, and avoiding and controlling dysfunction in the middle and later phases of the disease are the key areas of research and development for its therapy. Presently, the development and progression of PD can be slowed down by using conventional pharmacology, natural items, and innovative technology. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the predominant cause of dementia on a global scale, significantly impacting the health of the elderly population. The pathogenesis of AD is closely linked to neuroinflammation. The present study employs a bibliometric analysis to examine research pertaining to neuroinflammation and AD within the last decade, with the objective of providing a comprehensive overview of the current research profile, hotspots and trends. Methods: This research conducted a comprehensive review of publications within the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection Database spanning the years 2014 to 2024. Bibliometric analyses were performed using VOSviewer (version 1.6.19) and CiteSpace (version 6.3.R1) software to visualize data on countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords, and references. Results: A total of 3,833 publications on neuroinflammation and AD were included from January 2014 to January 2024. Publications were mainly from the United States and China. Zetterberg, Henrik emerged as the author with the highest publication output, while Edison, Paul was identified as the most cited author. The most productive journal was Journal of Alzheimers Disease, and the most co-cited was Journal of Neuroinflammation. Research hotspot focused on microglia, mouse models, oxidative stress, and amyloid-beta through keyword analysis. Additionally, keywords such as blood-brain barrier and tau protein exhibited prolonged citation bursts from 2022 to 2024. Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive review of the last 10 years of research on neuroinflammation and AD, including the number and impact of research findings, research hotspots, and future trends. The quantity of publications in this field is increasing, mainly in the United States and China, and there is a need to further strengthen close cooperation with different countries and institutions worldwide. Presently, research hotspots are primarily concentrated on microglia, with a focus on inhibiting their pro-inflammatory responses and promoting their anti-inflammatory functions as a potential direction for future investigations. Introduction: Pueraria lobata is traditionally used in China for treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Puerarin, a functional drug extracted from Pueraria lobata, features a pharmacological activity. The present study aims to investigate the effect of puerarin intervention on NAFLD. Methods: We established an NAFLD mouse model using a high-fat diet with 60% fat and evaluated the impact of puerarin intervention. Results and discussion: Our results demonstrate that puerarin intervention significantly ameliorates lipid accumulation and protects the liver from highfat-induced damage while reducing oxidative stress levels in the liver. Furthermore, puerarin intervention significantly downregulates the transcription levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC1) in the liver. It also upregulates the transcription levels of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor γ coactivator alpha (PGC1α), which are related to oxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrated that flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO5) was involved in the protective effect of puerarin against NFALD. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the beneficial effect of puerarin on NAFLD and showed that puerarin could prevent liver injury and lipid accumulation caused by NAFLD via activating FMO5. Background: Noninvasive energy‐based device (NI‐EBD) aesthetic procedures has recently gained widespread usage for treating various skin conditions, enhancing skin texture and performing rejuvenation‐related procedures. However, practically all NI‐EBD procedures result in variable degrees of damage to the skin barrier, inducing pathological and physiological processes such as oxidative stress and inflammation, and only a small percentage of individuals possess the innate ability to restore it. Objective: To introduce the concept of integrated skincare and establish standardized operational procedures for perioperative integrated skincare, and furnish a theoretical basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment performed by professional medical aestheticians. Methods: The author leveraged domestic and international guidelines, clinical practice expertise and evidence‐based research, adapting them to suit the specific circumstances in China. Results: The consensus were provided four parts, including concept and essence of integrated skincare, integrated skincare significance during the perioperative phase of NI‐EBD procedures, active ingredients and functions of effective skincare products, standardized perioperative skincare procedure for NI‐EBD procedures and precautions. For the standardized perioperative skincare procedure, four recommendations were listed according to different stages during NI‐EBD procedures. Soft drink consumption has become a highly controversial public health issue. Given the pattern of consumption in China, sugar-sweetened beverage is the main type of soft drink consumed. Due to containing high levels of fructose, a soft drink may have a deleterious effect on handgrip strength (HGS) due to oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, few studies show an association between soft drink consumption and HGS in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and longitudinal changes in HGS among a Chinese adult population. A longitudinal population-based cohort study (5-year follow-up, median: 3·66 years) was conducted in Tianjin, China. A total of 11 125 participants (56·7 % men) were enrolled. HGS was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Soft drink consumption (mainly sugar-containing carbonated beverages) was measured at baseline using a validated FFQ. ANCOVA was used to evaluate the association between soft drink consumption and annual change in HGS or weight-adjusted HGS. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, the least square means (95 % CI) of annual change in HGS across soft drink consumption frequencies were −0·70 (–2·49, 1·09) for rarely drinks, −0·82 (–2·62, 0·97) for < 1 cup/week and −0·86 (–2·66, 0·93) for ≥ 1 cup/week (P for trend < 0·05). Likewise, a similar association was observed between soft drink consumption and annual change in weight-adjusted HGS. Jujubae Fructus, the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba Mill has been used as one of the medicine food homology species for thousands of years in China. Studies have shown that the active ingredients of Jujubae Fructus have a variety of biological effects, but its role in the aging process still lacks knowledge. Here, we investigated the effect of Jujubae Fructus extract (JE) on Caenorhabditis elegans lifespan and its potential mechanism. The lifespan of C. elegans treated with JE was signifificantly increased in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, JE treatment prolonged the reproductive period and increased normal activity during aging in C. elegans. Similarly, JE supplementation also enhanced the resistance to heat and oxidative stress in C. elegans. Furthermore, the mutant worms' lifespan assays demonstrated that JE requires daf-16 to prolong lifespan. DAF-16::GFP analysis of TJ356 showed that JE treatment translocates DAF-16::GFP to nucleus in transgenic worms. By analyzing the downstream of daf-16, we identify that JE may regulate sod3 downstream of daf-16. Mutant worms' lifespan and transgenic reporter gene expression assays revealed that increasing SOD-3 expression was critical for extending longevity in C. elegans with JE therapy. Background: Serum trace elements and oxidative stress factors are related to diabetic microvascular complications. The study was to investigate the complex relationship between trace elements, oxidative stress factors, and the severity of microvascular complications of diabetes in older adults. Methods: The present study included patients with or without type 2 diabetes, and blood glucose, blood lipids, trace elements (iron, magnesium, zinc), oxidative stress factors (malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC)) were evaluated. Risk factors for the severity of diabetic microvascular complications in older adults with diabetes were also estimated. Results: There were statistically significant differences in fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), glycated hemoglobin (HbAlc), MDA, NO, SOD, T-AOC, magnesium, and zinc between the two groups (P< 0.05). Iron (rZinc = 0.147, rSOD = 0.180, rT-AOC = 0.193, P < 0.05) was positively correlated with zinc, SOD and T-AOC. Iron was negatively correlated with MDA (rMDA = − 0.146, P < 0.05). Magnesium was positively correlated with SOD (rMagnesium = 0.147, P < 0.05). Zinc (rSOD = 0.616, rT-AOC = 0.575, P < 0.01) was positively correlated with SOD and T-AOC. Zinc (rMDA =− 0.636, rNO=− 0.616, P< 0.01) was positively correlated with MDA and negatively correlated with NO. The course of disease (18.653, [5.726; 60.764], P < 0.01), FBG (1.265, [1.059; 1.511], P < 0.05), HbAlc (1.545, [1.431; 1.680], P < 0.01), MDA (2.989, [1.900; 4.702], P < 0.01) were risk factor for the severity of diabetic microvascular complications. Zinc (0.680, [0.503; 0.919], P < 0.05) and SOD (0.820, [0.698; 0.964], P < 0.05) were protective factors for the severity of diabetic microvascular complications. Conclusion: Serum trace elements are related to oxidative stress levels in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is one of the most commercially important crustacean species in China. The aim of this study was to characterize the toxic effects of butachlor (an herbicide of the acetanilide class) on juvenile E. sinensis crabs. The lethal effects and the acute toxicity of butachlor on juvenile E. sinensis specimens were assessed through a semi-static in vitro experiment. We determined the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as well as the levels of glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the gills and the hepatopancreas of the juvenile crabs, at different time points over a 14-day short-term exposure to butachlor. Moreover, we measured the residual levels of butachlor in three different tissues (gills, hepatopancreas, and muscles) of the juvenile crabs over a longer period. Our findings revealed that butachlor is highly toxic for juvenile E. sinensis crabs. In fact, the median lethal concentration (LC50) values of butachlor at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h were found to be 4.22, 1.84, 0.34, and 0.14 mg/L, respectively, while the safe concentration was 0.014 mg/L. The antioxidant defense ability of the juvenile E. sinensis crabs against butachlor was induced after exposure to the herbicide at a concentration of 0.01 mg/L. After 14 days of exposure to butachlor at 0.04 and 0.16 mg/L, both SOD and CAT were found to be significantly inhibited (p < 0.05), the GSH levels were found to be significantly decreased (p < 0.05) and the MDA levels were identified as significantly increased (p < 0.05). Moreover, after 14 days of exposure to butachlor at 0.16 mg/L, the activities of SOD and CAT as well as the content of GSH in the hepatopancreas were found to be significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Our results revealed that a high concentration of butachlor was capable of inducing oxidative stress and damage in juvenile E. sinensis crabs. The maximal residual value of butachlor was obtained in the gills, with a content of 4.56 μg/kg. Butachlor was not detected after 24 days in the aforementioned three tissues of the juvenile crabs, thereby indicating that it was effectively metabolized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cognitive impairment is a core symptom of schizophrenia. The gut microbiota (GM) and oxidative stress may play important roles in the pathophysiological mechanisms of cognitive impairment. This study aimed to explore the relationship between GM and oxidative stress in the cognitive function of schizophrenia. GM obtained by 16S RNA sequencing and serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels from schizophrenia patients (N = 68) and healthy controls (HCs, N = 72) were analyzed. All psychiatric symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Cognitive function was assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between GM, SOD, and cognitive function. Machine learning models were used to identify potential biomarkers. Compared to HCs, the relative abundances of Collinsella , undefined Ruminococcus , Lactobacillus , Eubacterium , Mogibacterium , Desulfovibrio , Bulleidia , Succinivibrio , Corynebacterium, and Atopobium were higher in patients with schizophrenia, but Faecalibacterium , Anaerostipes , Turicibacter, and Ruminococcus were lower. In patients with schizophrenia, the positive factor, general factor, and total score of MCCB positively correlated with Lactobacillus , Collinsella, and Lactobacillus , respectively; SOD negatively correlated with Eubacterium , Collinsella , Lactobacillus , Corynebacterium , Bulleidia, Mogibacterium, and Succinivibrio, but positively correlated with Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus , and MCCB verbal learning index scores; Faecalibacterium and Turicibacter were positively correlated with MCCB visual learning index scores and speed of processing index scores, respectively. Hypertension reduces the bioavailability of vascular nitric oxide (NO) and contributes to the onset of vascular dementia (VaD). A loss of NO bioavailability increases inflammation and oxidative stress. 2-(4-Methylthiazol-5-yl) ethyl nitrate hydrochloride (W1302) is a novel nitric oxide donor (NOD) which is undergoing phase I clinical trials in China for the treatment of VaD. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of W1302 in VaD rats induced by the permanent occlusion of a bilateral common carotid arteries model related to spontaneous hypertension (SHR-2VO), and we further explored the underlying mechanisms. Nimodipine was used as a positive control. Our results showed that W1302 treatment for 4 weeks (10 mg/Kg/day) exhibited stronger improvement in the spatial learning and memory deficits in SHR-2VO rats compared with nimodipine with slightly lower systolic blood pressure (SBP). Meanwhile, W1302 treatment significantly increased NO and cGMP production, restored mitochondrial membrane potential and attenuated oxidative stress as evidenced by increasing ATP production and reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the brain. Furthermore, W1302 treatment markedly inhibited the iNOS activity and decreased TNF-α expression via inhibiting the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. Nimodipine treatment also restored these aberrant changes, but its ATP production was weaker than that of W1302, and there was no significant effect on NO release. Taken together, W1302 exhibited beneficial effects on complications in VaD with hypertension, which is involved in suppressing oxidative damage, and the inflammatory reaction might be mediated by an increase in NO release. Eriocheir sinensis, a key species in China's freshwater aquaculture, is threatened by various diseases, which were verified to be closely associated with oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the response of E. sinensis to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress to understand the biological processes behind these diseases. Crabs were exposed to different concentrations of H2O2 and their antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expressions for defense and immunity were measured. Results showed that activities of antioxidant enzymes—specificallysuperoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)—varied with exposure concentration and duration, initially increasing then decreasing. Notably, SOD, GSH-Px, and T-AOC activities dropped below control levels at 96 h. Concurrently, oxidative damage markers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), H2O2, and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels, increased with exposure duration. The mRNA expression of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px also showed an initial increase followed by a decrease, peaking at 72 h. The upregulation of phenoloxidaseloxidase (proPO) and peroxinectin (PX) was also detected, but proPO was suppressed under high levels of H2O2. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression gradually increased with higher H2O2 concentrations, whereas induced nitrogen monoxide synthase (iNOS) was upregulated but decreased at 96 h. These findings emphasize H2O2's significant impact on the crab's oxidative and immune responses, highlighting the importance of understanding cellular stress responses for disease prevention and therapy development. Cruciferae brassica oilseed rape is the third largest oilseed crop in the world and the first in China, as well as a fertilizer-dependent crop. With the increased application of organic fertilizers from livestock manure in agricultural production in recent years, the resulting antibiotic pollution and its ecological health effects have attracted widespread attention. In this study, typical tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) were used to investigate the effects of antibiotics on rapeseed quality and oxidative stress at the level of secondary metabolism on the basis of examining the effects of the two drugs on the growth of soil-cultivated rapeseed seedlings. The results showed that both plant height and biomass of rapeseed seedlings were significantly suppressed and ROS were significantly induced in rapeseed by exposure to high concentrations (2.5 mg/kg) of TC and SMZ. Carotenoids, tocopherols, and SOD enzymes were involved in the oxidative stress response to scavenge free radicals in rapeseed, but phenolic acids and flavonoids contents were decreased, which reduced the quality of the seeds to some extent. Bilobalide has shown strong anti-inflammatory activity. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is closely associated with inflammation. However, no studies have reported on the use of bilobalide for treating CRC. This study aims to evaluate the effect of bilobalide on CRC prevention. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), Western blotting, and immunofluorescence showed that bilobalide significantly inhibits the M2 polarization of macrophages dependent on phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and interleukin-4 (IL-4). Analysis of signaling pathways showed that the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) was regulated. In particular, human CRC organoids were established. Western blotting, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase biotin-dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL), and analysis of cell viability and morphology further supported the hypothesis that the anti-CRC effects of bilobalide could be explained by its ability to suppress M2 macrophage polarization and promote M1 transformation. C57BL/6 mice treated with azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) were divided into three groups, i.e., control, AOM/DSS, low (2.5 mg/kg), and high (5 mg/kg). High-dose bilobalide markedly inhibited the progression of CRC, as evidenced by the increased body weight, decrease in disease activity index (DAI) death rate, and alleviation of colon length reduction and tumorigenesis. According to the in vivo results, reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines in the serum included tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10. Bilobalide reduced oxidative stress indices, lipid peroxide (LPO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased reduced glutathione (GSH). In addition, the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki67, cellular Myc (c-Myc), and CD206 was downregulated in the drug-treated groups, as confirmed by the immunohistochemical staining. Collectively, these results indicated that bilobalide administration improve experimental CRC by inhibiting M2 macrophage polarization and oxidative stress. The present study compares sugarcane-wax purified policosanols sourced from Cuba (Raydel®) and China (BOC Sciences) and utilized following the synthesis of reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDL). The two policosanols exhibited distinctly different ingredient ratios of long-chain aliphatic alcohols, particularly 1-octacosanol (C28) and 1-tetratriacotanol (C34). After synthesizing rHDL with apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), the two policosanols bound well with phospholipid and apoA-I to form the discoidal rHDL. Notably, rHDL-1, containing Cuban policosanol, displayed the largest particle diameter at approximately 78 ± 3 nm. In contrast, both control rHDL (rHDL-0) and rHDL containing Chinese policosanol (rHDL-2) exhibited smaller particles, with diameters of approximately 58 ± 3 nm and 61 ± 2 nm, respectively. Furthermore, rHDL-1 demonstrated enhanced anti-glycation activity, safeguarding apoA-I from degradation within HDL, and displayed the antioxidant ability to inhibit LDL oxidation. A microinjection of each rHDL into zebrafish embryos in the presence of carboxymethyllysine (CML) revealed rHDL-1 to have the strongest antioxidant activity with the highest embryo survivability and normal developmental morphology. Dermal application to recover the wound revealed rHDL-1 to have the highest wound-healing activity (75%) and survivability (92%) in the cutaneous wound area in the presence of CML. In adult zebrafish, injecting CML (250 μg) caused acute death and hyperinflammation, marked by heightened neutrophil infiltration and interleukin (IL)-6 production in liver. However, co-administering rHDL-1 notably increased survival (85%) and exhibited strong anti-inflammatory properties, reducing IL-6 production while improving the blood lipid profile. However, a co-injection of rHDL-2 resulted in the lowest survivability (47%) with more hepatic inflammation. In conclusion, Cuban policosanol (Raydel®) has more desirable properties for the in vitro synthesis of rHDL with stronger anti-glycation and antioxidant activities than those of Chinese policosanol (BOC Sciences). Moreover, Raydel-policosanol-integrated rHDL demonstrates a noteworthy effect on accelerated wound healing and robust anti-inflammatory properties, leading to increased survivability in zebrafish embryos and adults by effectively suppressing CML-induced hyperinflammation. Objective: Investigating the changes in the oxidative stress levels and helper T lymphocyte (Th) subsets in patients with periodontitis and IgA nephropathy (IgAN) to determine their relationship. Background: IgAN has a high prevalence, poor prognosis, and no effective cure. Accumulating evidence has implicated a close relationship between periodontitis and chronic kidney diseases, in which both IgAN and chronic periodontitis show chronic inflammation and abnormal metabolism. However, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between the two diseases from this perspective. Methods: We divided 86 IgAN patients into patients with healthy periodontium (IgAN‐H, n = 34) and patients with periodontitis IgAN (IgAN‐P, n = 52); moreover, we divided 72 systemically healthy participants into patients with periodontitis (H‐P, n = 35) and participants with healthy periodontium (H‐H, n = 37). The proportions of Th subsets in peripheral blood were estimated using flow cytometry. Cytokine levels in plasma were assessed using cytokine assay kits. Enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay was used to evaluate the plasma levels of oxidative stress. Results: Our results from analyzing the Th cell subsets indicated that Th2 cell counts in the IgAN‐P group were significantly lower than those in the IgAN‐H group, while Th17 cell counts were increased (p < 0.05). Moreover, the Th1/Th2 ratio and interleukin‐6 levels in the IgAN‐P group were significantly higher than those in the H‐H group (p < 0.01). Compared with that in the H‐H group, in the remaining three groups, plasma total oxidation state (TOS) levels were increased (p < 0.01), while plasma total antioxidant state (TAS) levels were decreased (p < 0.05). Furthermore, estimated glomerular filtration rate was negatively correlated with the probing depth and gingival bleeding index. IgAN was a risk factor for periodontitis, while TAS was a protective factor for periodontitis. The oxidative stress index (OSI) might be valuable for distinguishing periodontitis patients from healthy controls (area under the receiver operator characteristic curve = 0.951). Conclusion: IgAN is an independent risk factor of periodontitis, and the Th17 cell‐mediated inflammatory response might be associated with the occurrence of periodontitis in patients with IgAN. Artemisia japonica Thunb. has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine and a vegetable for thousands of years in China. However, there are few reports on the chemical composition and biological activity of its leaves. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of water extracts of A. japonica leaves and their underlying mechanisms. A total of 48 compounds were identified in the water extract using UPLC-QTOF-MS2 analysis, with phenolic acids, particularly chlorogenic acid compounds, being the predominant components. The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) contained most of the total phenolic content (385.4217 mg GAE/g) and displayed superior antioxidant capacity with the IC50DPPH•, IC50ABTS•+, and OD0.5reducing power at 10.987 μg/mL, 43.630 μg/mL and 26.883 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, EAF demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells by upregulating the Nrf2/HO-1 signal pathway. These findings highlight that A. japonica leaves possess remarkable abilities to mitigate inflammation and oxidative stress, suggesting their potential utilization as medicinal agents and food additives for promoting human health. Que Zui tea (QT) is an important herbal tea in the diet of the 'Yi' people, an ethnic group in China, and it has shown significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects in vitro. This study aims to explore the protective effects of the aqueous-ethanol extract (QE) taken from QT against ᴅ-galactose (ᴅ-gal)-induced oxidative stress damage in mice and its potential mechanisms. QE was identified as UHPLC-HRMS/MS for its chemical composition and possible bioactive substances. Thus, QE is rich in phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Twelve compounds were identified, the main components of which were chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, and 6′-O-caffeoylarbutin. Histopathological and biochemical analysis revealed that QE significantly alleviated brain, liver, and kidney damage in ᴅ-gal-treated mice. Moreover, QE remarkably attenuated oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway to increase the expression of antioxidant indexes, including GSH, GSH-Px, CAT, SOD, and T-AOC. In addition, QE administration could inhibit the IL-1β and IL-6 levels, which suppress the inflammatory response. QE could noticeably alleviate apoptosis by inhibiting the expressions of Caspase-3 and Bax proteins in the brains, livers, and kidneys of mice. The anti-apoptosis mechanism may be related to the upregulation of the SIRT1 protein and the downregulation of the p53 protein induced by QE in the brain, liver, and kidney tissues of mice. Molecular docking analysis demonstrated that the main components of QE, 6′-O-caffeoylarbutin, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, and robustaside A, had good binding ability with Nrf2 and SIRT1 proteins. The present study indicated that QE could alleviate ᴅ-gal-induced brain, liver and kidney damage in mice by inhibiting the oxidative stress and cell apoptosis; additionally, the potential mechanism may be associated with the SIRT1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. Angelicae pubescentis radix (APR) has been traditionally used for thousands of years in China to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disorder. As the main active coumarin of APR, columbianadin (CBN) exhibits a significant anti-inflammatory effect in vitro. However, the anti-inflammatory activity and underlying mechanism of CBN in vivo remain unclear. This work aimed to elucidate the anti-inflammatory activity of CBN in vivo and its related signaling pathways in a D-Gal-induced liver injury mouse model. Analysis of biochemical indices (ALT and AST) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) in serum indicated that CBN significantly ameliorated D-Gal-induced liver injury. CBN treatment also significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx), and decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) in liver tissue. Liver histology revealed that CBN treatment reduced hepatic inflammation. Western blot analysis indicated that CBN down-regulates the expression of phosphorylated JAK2, STAT3, MAPK, and NF-κB in the related signaling pathways. These findings support the traditional use of APR as a remedy for the immune system, and indicate that the JAK2/STAT3 and JAK2/p38/NF-κB signaling pathways may be important mechanisms for the anti-inflammatory activity of CBN in vivo. Our aim was to investigate the effect of UA level on clinical outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Methods: In the retrospective cohort study, we analyzed data from 250 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (85 women and 165 men) to investigate the difference in UA levels between patients with a good prognosis and those with a poor prognosis. Additionally, we analyzed the impact of UA levels on the risk of short-time prognosis of ICH patients. Results: Patients with a good prognosis presented with significantly lower levels of UA (348.71 ± 84.97 μmol/L) than those with poor prognosis (393.06 ± 148.46 μmol/L). Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression model demonstrated that a high UA level was a likely risk factor for worse prognosis among patients suffering in ICH (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.006 [1.0012, 1.0108]; P = 0.015). Additionally, UA has a threshold effect value of 363.9 μmol/L and was presented in levels that were in a nonlinear relationship with incidence rate of short-time prognosis outcome of ICH patients. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that higher UA levels can increase the risk of poor clinical prognosis in patients with ICH and high UA levels are not conductive to the clinical prognosis of patients with ICH. Unconventional feed, which is abundant in China, contains anti-nutritional factors and toxins; however, these can be greatly reduced with microbial fermentation, thus improving the nutrient content of the feed, enhancing animal appetites, and ultimately significantly improving the intestinal health and growth performance of animals. When oxidative stress occurs, fermented feed can effectively reduce the damage caused by stress to the gastrointestinal tract, accelerate the removal of gastrointestinal abnormalities, improve the ability to resist intestinal stress, and ensure the efficient production of animals. This review introduces the application of unconventional fermented feed in animal production, and expounds upon the function of unconventional fermented feed in animals with oxidative stress symptoms, so as to provide a theoretical reference for the development and application of unconventional fermented feed in antioxidative stress reduction. Objective To explore the relationship between the levels of serum 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8 - OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and cognitive dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods From February 2021 to February 2022, 126 patients with PD in The Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University were divided into normal cognitive function group (PDN group, n = 41), mild cognitive impairment group (PD-MCI group, n = 47) and Parkinson's disease dementia group (PDD group, n = 38), and 50 healthy subjects were selected as control group. Hoehn-Yahr staging was used to evaluate the severity of patients with PD during the "close" period of anti-PD drugs, and the motor function of patients with PD was evaluated by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III (UPDRS III). Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate the severity of cognitive dysfunction at rest and in the "on" period of anti-PD drugs, and the serum 8-OHdG and MDA of PD patients and controls were collected. Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to analyze the correlation between the levels of serum 8-OHdG and MDA and MoCA score in PD patients. Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the influencing factors of cognitive dysfunction in PD patients. The efficacy analysis of serum 8-OHdG and MDA levels in predicting the risk of cognitive dysfunction in PD patients was carried out by using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve). Results The results of correlation analysis showed that there was a negative correlation between the MoCA score and the duration (r = - 0.241, P = 0.007), Hoehn-Yahr staging (r = - 0.333, P = 0.007), 8-OHdG (r = - 0.310, P = 0.000) and MDA (r = - 0.291, P = 0.004) in PD patients. The results of Logistic regression analysis showed that the elevated levels of 8-OHdG (OR = 1.335, 95%CI: 1.137-1.568; P = 0.000) and MDA (OR = 2.928, 95%CI: 1.676-5.115; P = 0.000) were risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in PD patients. The results of ROC curve showed the areas under the curve of 8-OHdG, MDA and their combination in predicting cognitive dysfunction in PD patients were 0.831 (95%CI: 0.761-0.902, P = 0.000), 0.846 (95%CI: 0.775-0.916, P = 0.000) and 0.922 (95%CI: 0.878-0.966, P = 0.000), respectively. Conclusions The detection of 8-OHdG and MDA in peripheral blood is expected to be a serum marker to evaluate the severity of cognitive dysfunction in patients with PD, and to predict cognitive dysfunction in patients with PD. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed female cancer worldwide. Environmental contaminant exposure is suspected to be crucial, but the broad-spectrum communal properties that these suspected contaminants all share remain to be explored, especially in source and drinking water. In this work, we focused on the Pearl River Basin, which has the highest breast cancer incidence and mortality in China, and hypothesized that the breast cancer risk in this area is associated with its water source. Our objective was to resolve the possible communal properties that are associated with breast cancer from water mixture extracts of source and drinking water and to identify the key drivers by utilizing the latest epidemiology data, performing an exhaustive water toxicological and chemical characterization, and combining partial least-squares path statistics modeling (PLS-PM). We proposed a path for a drinking water-toxicity-induced breast cancer risk and confirmed its association with estrogen-receptor- and thiol-depletion-relevant mechanisms. The breast cancer incidence risk was associated with water-mixture-promoted mammalian cell proliferation (i.e., estrogenic effect), while the mortality risk was associated with a greater thiol depletion (i.e., oxidative stress). Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from anthropogenic sources in drinking water are key drivers for estrogenic effects and oxidative stress, respectively. The PLS-PM standardized effects of the DOM and EDCs in treated water on the breast cancer incidence and mortality were −0.07 and 0.31, and 0.35 and 0.31, respectively, further revealing that EDCs strongly influence the incidence risk, whereas the mortality risk resulted from the joint effects of EDCs and DOM. This study clearly shows an association between the breast cancer risk and drinking water toxicity in a high-prevalence area of China, broadening the future perspectives for water-contaminant-specific breast cancer prevention research. Eugenol (EU) has been shown to ameliorate experimental colitis due to its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory bioactivities. In this study, DSS-induced acute colitis was established and applied to clarify the regulation efficacy of EU on intestinal barrier impairment and macrophage polarization imbalance along with the inflammatory response. Besides, the adjusting effect of EU on macrophages was further investigated in vitro. The results confirmed that EU intervention alleviated DSS-induced colitis through methods such as restraining weight loss and colonic shortening and decreasing DAI scores. Microscopic observation manifested that EU maintained the intestinal barrier integrity in line with the mucus barrier and tight junction protection. Furthermore, EU intervention significantly suppressed the activation of TLR4/MyD88/NF- κ B signaling pathways and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene expressions, while enhancing the expressions of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Simultaneously, WB and FCM analyses of the CD86 and CD206 showed that EU could regulate the DSS-induced macrophage polarization imbalance. Overall, our data further elucidated the mechanism of EU's defensive effect on experimental colitis, which is relevant to the protective efficacy of intestinal barriers, inhibition of oxidative stress and excessive inflammatory response, and reprogramming of macrophage polarization. Purpose: To determine the effect of complex micronutrient supplements and vitamin D as adjunct therapy on pancreatic function, oxidative stress, glucose metabolism and pregnancy outcomes in patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: 100 GDM patients admitted to Hangzhou Linping District Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, China between March 2022 and February 2023, were randomly allocated to control and study groups (50 patients each). Control group received insulin injections, whereas study group received complex micronutrients with vitamin D as supplements to insulin. Differences in terms of pancreatic function (homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), homeostatic model assessment-beta-cell function index (HOMA-ß)), oxidative stress (total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA)), glucose metabolism indicators (fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-hour postprandial glucose (2hPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c)) and pregnancy outcomes was assessed. Results: After treatment, both groups showed reductions in serum levels of FBG, 2hPG and HbA1c, but study group exhibited a considerably greater decrease (p < 0.05). In addition, study group had lower HOMA-IR and MDA levels as well as higher HOMA-ß and TAC levels (p < 0.05). Negative delivery outcomes occurred less frequently in study group than in control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Complex micronutrient supplements (rich in magnesium, calcium, and zinc) in combination with vitamin D as adjunct to insulin treatment effectively reduce pancreatic function and oxidative stress, significantly control blood glucose levels and lower the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM patients. STUDY QUESTION What is the mechanism behind cryoinjury in human sperm, particularly concerning the interplay between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and autophagy, and how does it subsequently affect sperm fate? SUMMARY ANSWER The freeze-thaw operation induces oxidative stress by generating abundant ROS, which impairs sperm motility and activates autophagy, ultimately guiding the sperm toward programmed cell death such as apoptosis and necrosis, as well as triggering premature capacitation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Both ROS-induced oxidative stress and autophagy are thought to exert an influence on the quality of frozen-thawed sperm. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Overall, 84 semen specimens were collected from young healthy fertile males, with careful quality evaluation. The specimens were split into three groups to investigate the ROS-induced cryoinjury: normal control without any treatment, sperm treated with 0.5 mM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 1 h, and sperm thawed following cryopreservation. Samples from 48 individuals underwent computer-assisted human sperm analysis (CASA) to evaluate sperm quality in response to the treatments. Semen samples from three donors were analyzed for changes in the sperm proteome after H2O2 treatment, and another set of samples from three donors were analyzed for changes following the freeze-thaw process. The other 30 samples were used for fluorescence-staining and western blotting. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Sperm motility parameters, including progressive motility (PR %) and total motility (PR + NP %), were evaluated using the CASA system on a minimum of 200 spermatozoa. The proteomic profiles were determined with label-free mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and protein identification was performed via ion search against the NCBI human database. Subsequently, comprehensive bioinformatics was applied to detect significant proteomic changes and functional enrichment. Fluorescence-staining and western blot analyses were also conducted to confirm the proteomic changes on selected key proteins. The ROS level was measured using 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate labeling and the abundance of bioactive mitochondria was determined by evaluating the inner mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) level. Molecular behaviors of sequestosome-1 (p62 or SQSTM1) and microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3 (LC3) were monitored to evaluate the state of apoptosis in human sperm. Fluorescent probes oxazole yellow (YO-PRO-1) and propidium iodide (PI) were utilized to monitor programmed cell death, namely apoptosis and necrosis. Additionally, gradient concentrations of antioxidant coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) were introduced to suppress ROS impacts on sperm. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE The CASA analysis revealed a significant decrease in sperm motility for both the H2O2-treatment and freeze-thaw groups. Fluorescence staining showed that high ROS levels were produced in the treated sperm and the MMPs were largely reduced. The introduction of CoQ10 at concentrations of 20 and 30 μM resulted in a significant rescue of progressive motility (P  < 0.05). The result suggested that excessive ROS could be the major cause of sperm motility impairment, likely by damaging mitochondrial energy generation. Autophagy was significantly activated in sperm when they were under oxidative stress, as evidenced by the upregulation of p62 and the increased conversion of LC3 as well as the upregulation of several autophagy-related proteins, such as charged multivesicular body protein 2a, mitochondrial import receptor subunit TOM22 homolog, and WD repeat domain phosphoinositide-interacting protein 2. Additionally, fluorescent staining indicated the occurrence of apoptosis and necrosis in both H2O2-treated sperm and post-thaw sperm. The cell death process can be suppressed when CoQ10 is introduced, which consolidates the view that ROS could be the major contributor to sperm cryoinjury. The freeze-thaw process could also initiate sperm premature capacitation, demonstrated by the prominent increase in tyrosine phosphorylated proteins, verified with anti-phosphotyrosine antibody and immunofluorescence assays. The upregulation of capacitation-related proteins, such as hyaluronidase 3 and Folate receptor alpha, supported this finding. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The semen samples were obtained exclusively from young, healthy, and fertile males with progressive motility exceeding 60%, which might overemphasize the positive effects while possibly neglecting the negative impacts of cryoinjury. Additionally, the H2O2 treatment conditions in this study may not precisely mimic the oxidative stress experienced by sperm after thawing from cryopreservation, potentially resulting in the omission of certain molecular alterations. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS This study provides substantial proteomic data for a comprehensive and deeper understanding of the impact of cryopreservation on sperm quality. It will facilitate the design of optimal protocols for utilizing cryopreserved sperm to improve applications, such as ART, and help resolve various adverse situations caused by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Allergy rhinitis (AR) is becoming more common and has serious medical and societal consequences. Sneezing, paroxysmal nasal blockage, nasal itching, mucosal edema, coughing, and rhinorrhea are symptoms of this type I allergic immunological illness. Immunoglobulin E-mediated inflammation is the cause of it. Because AR is prone to recurrent attacks, extended medication therapy may impair its effectiveness. In addition to negatively affecting the patients' physical health, this can also negatively impact their mental health. During AR development, there are inflammatory and oxidative stress responses that are linked to problems in a number of signal transduction pathways. By using the terms "allergic rhinitis", "traditional Chinese medicine", "inflammation", and "oxidative stress", we screened for pertinent research published over the previous five years in databases like PubMed. We saw that NF-KB, TLR, IL-33/ST2, PI3K/AKT, MAPK, and Nrf2 are some of the most important inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways in AR. Studies have revealed that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapy reduced the risk of AR and was therapeutic; however, the impact of the therapy varies widely. The Chinese medical system places a high value on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which has been there for virtually all of China's 5000-year history. By influencing signaling pathways related to inflammation and oxidative stress, Chinese herbal medicine and its constituent compounds have been shown to prevent allergic rhinitis. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents, and its etiology and pathogenesis are still unclear. Brain is the organ with the largest oxygen consumption in human body and is easily affected by oxidative imbalance. Oxidative stress has become the key research direction for the pathogenesis of ADHD, but there is still a lack of relevant studies in China. Based on the latest research findings in China and overseas, this article reviews the clinical and experimental studies on oxidative stress in ADHD and explores the association of oxidative stress with neurotransmitter imbalance, neuroinflammation, and cell apoptosis in the pathogenesis of ADHD, so as to provide new research ideas for exploring the pathogenesis of ADHD. Introduction: We aimed to investigate the relationship between nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) protein expression levels, lupus nephritis (LN) disease activity, and the degree of renal injury (based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]) in patients with LN. Methods: We selected 40 healthy control participants and 102 patients with LN who were treated in the Second Hospital of Jilin University, China, for inclusion in this study. Patients with LN were classified into LN with high-eGFR and LN with low-eGFR groups. Nrf2 protein levels were measured in the serum and renal tissues of the participants in both groups to assess the correlation between Nrf2 protein levels and different LN disease states. Results: There was a significantly positive correlation between serum Nrf2 protein levels, the degree of renal injury, and systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index (SLEDAI) scores in patients with LN. Nrf2 protein levels were higher in the LN with high-eGFR group than in the healthy control and LN with low-eGFR groups. In follow-up patients in the LN high eGFR group, Nrf2 protein levels decreased significantly after remission of disease activity. Conclusion: Nrf2 protein expression has a dual role in patients with LN. Nrf2 protein levels not only correlate with disease activity in patients with LN, but also with the degree of kidney injury. Before implementing targeted therapy for Nrf2, evaluating both Nrf2 protein expression and the disease state in patients with LN is necessary to better identify and place each patient in an appropriate patient group. Simple Summary: Cadmium (Cd) is a major aquatic pollutant that can cause toxic effects on aquatic animals, including the economically important clam Meretrix meretrix. A transcriptomic analysis was performed on M. meretrix fertilized eggs, D-shaped larvae, pediveligers, and postlarvae following exposure to Cd2+-containing seawater. A number of genes related to the oxidative stress response were found to be differentially expressed in the fertilized egg and the different larval forms when exposed to Cd2+. These included the CCO, Ndh, HPX, A2M, STF, and pro-C3 genes, and changes in their expression levels in response to Cd2+ exposure were confirmed by qRT-PCR assays. In addition, qRT-PCR also revealed marked changes in the expression of two other oxidative stress-related genes, Nrf2 and MT, in the fertilized egg and different larval forms of M. meretrix in response to Cd2+ exposure. The results suggested that changes in oxidative stress-related genes might be crucial for M. meretrix to cope with the adverse effects of Cd during its development. Cadmium (Cd) is one of the major pollutants in the aquatic environment, and it can easily accumulate in aquatic animals and result in toxic effects by changing the metabolism of the body, causing a serious impact on the immune system, reproductive system, and the development of offspring. The clam Meretrix meretrix is one of the commercially important species that is cultivated in large-scale aquaculture in China. To elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of Cd2+ in the developmental processes, fertilized eggs and larvae of M. meretrix at different developmental stages were exposed to Cd2+ (27.2 mg L−1 in natural seawater) or just natural seawater without Cd2+ (control), and high-throughput transcriptome sequencing and immunohistochemistry techniques were used to analyze the toxic effects of Cd on larvae at different early developmental stages. The results revealed 31,914 genes were differentially expressed in the different stages of M. meretrix development upon treatment with Cd2+. Ten of these genes were differentially expressed in all stages of development examined, but they comprised only six unigenes (CCO, Ndh, HPX, A2M, STF, and pro-C3), all of which were related to the oxidative stress response. Under Cd exposure, the expression levels of CCO and Ndh were significantly upregulated in D-shaped and pediveliger larvae, while pro-C3 expression was significantly upregulated in the fertilized egg, D-shaped larva, and pediveliger. Moreover, HPX, A2M, and STF expression levels in the fertilized egg and pediveliger larvae were also significantly upregulated. In contrast, CCO, Ndh, HPX, A2M, STF, and pro-C3 expression levels in the postlarva were all downregulated under Cd exposure. Besides the genes with changes in expression identified by the transcriptome, the expression of two other oxidative stress-related genes (MT and Nfr2) was also found to change significantly in the different developmental stages of M. meretrix upon Cd exposure, confirming their roles in combating oxidative stress. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that Cd would interfere with cellular respiration, ion transport, and immune response through inducing oxidative stress, and changes in the expression of oxidative stress-related genes might be an important step for M. meretrix to deal with the adverse effects of Cd at different stages of its development. Purpose: To investigate the effect of berberine on glucolipid metabolism, carotid thickness, vascular endothelial function, oxidative stress and intestinal flora in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. Methods: 68 patients with CHD admitted to the Department of Cardiology, Henan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China were assigned to two groups of 34 patients each. Control group received anti-CHD treatment while study group was given 0.3 g of berberine three times daily for 4 weeks. Changes in glucolipid metabolism, carotid thickness, vascular endothelial function, oxidative stress and intestinal flora were assessed. Results: Total cholesterol, triglyceride, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-1β of CHD patients from study group were significantly decreased compared to control group (p < 0.05) while superoxide dismutase (p = 0.019) and total antioxidant capacity (p = 0.009) of CHD patients in study group were significantly increased. In addition, reduced endothelin-1 and elevated Nitric Oxide levels were shown in CHD patients in study group (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the carotid intima-media thickness decreased in study group, while Aquificae, Paraprevotella, Abiotrophia, Rubrobacterales, Bacteroidales and other microbes were abundant in the intestinal tract of study group patients. Conclusion: Berberine improves glucolipid metabolism, carotid thickness, vascular endothelial function, oxidative stress and intestinal flora in CHD patients. STUDY QUESTION What is the impact of male hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection on sperm quality, embryonic development, and assisted reproductive outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER Male HBV infection did not affect assisted reproductive outcomes, but HBV is capable of impairing human sperm and embryo formation in the early stages following fertilization. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY HBV is found in germ cells and early embryos of patients with HBV. HBV may impair human sperm function via increasing reactive oxygen species. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1581 infertile couples, including 496 male patients clinically confirmed to have hepatitis B infection, and a laboratory study of effects of HBV proteins on early embryos, using human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), human sperm, and golden hamster oocytes. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS In total, 1581 infertile couples (24–40 years of age) who were admitted to a reproductive medicine center to undergo ART for the first time from January 2019 to November 2021 were selected as the study subjects. The case group was composed of 469 couples with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-seropositive men and seronegative women (368 for IVF and 101 for ICSI treatment). The negative control group was composed of 1112 couples where both men and women were seronegative for hepatitis B antigen. We divided these couples into three comparison groups (IVF/ICSI, IVF, and ICSI). IVF of human sperm and hamster oocytes was used to evaluate the influence of the HBV HBs protein on formation of 2-cell embryos. Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) of hESCs was assayed via a fluorescence intensity system. Immunofluorescence staining of the phosphorylated histone H2A.X was applied to identify DNA damage to hESCs caused by the HBV X (HBx) protein. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Sperm concentration, total sperm number, and sperm with normal morphology were decreased in the couples with HBV-infected males in couples who were undergoing IVF/ICSI (male HBV(+) vs control: 469 vs 1112 individuals; sperm number, P  <   0.01; normal sperm morphology, P  <   0.01), IVF (368 vs 792; sperm number, P  <   0.01; normal sperm morphology, P  ≤   0.05), and ICSI (101 vs 306; sperm number, P  <   0.01; normal sperm morphology, P  <   0.001). There was no significant difference in the number of embryo cleavages, blastocyst formation, biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and live-birth rate between case and control groups. The 2PN fertilization rate in IVF/ICSI (P  <   0.01) and ICSI (P  <   0.05) couples, and the number of 2PN-fertilized oocytes in IVF (P  <   0.001) couples were lower in couples with male HBV infection compared to control couples. HBV HBs protein reduced the MMP of human sperm and decreased 2-cell embryo formation in IVF of human sperm and zona-free-hamster oocyte. A reduction in fluorescence intensity and immunofluorescence staining of phosphorylated histone H2A.X indicated that HBx caused MMP impairment and DNA damage in human early embryonic cells, respectively. The hESC model in vitro may not fully mimic the natural embryos in vivo. Cisplatin (Cis) is considered to be one of the most effective drugs for killing cancer cells and remains a first-line chemotherapeutic agent. However, Cis's multiple toxicities (especially nephrotoxicity) have limited its clinical use. Marsdenia tenacissima (Roxb.) Wight et Arn. (MT), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) employed extensively in China, not only enhances the antitumor effect in combination with Cis, but is also used for its detoxifying effect, as it reduces the toxic side effects of chemotherapy drugs. The aim of this study was to explore the therapeutic effect of MT on Cis-induced nephrotoxicity, along with its underlying mechanisms. In this study, liquid–mass spectrometry was performed to identify the complex composition of the extracts of MT. In addition, we measured the renal function, antioxidant enzymes, and inflammatory cytokines in mice with Cis-induced nephrotoxicity and conducted renal histology evaluations to assess renal injury. The expressions of the proteins related to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and apoptotic markers in renal tissues was detected by Western blotting (WB). MT treatment improved the renal function, decreased the mRNA expression of the inflammatory factors, and increased the antioxidant enzyme activity in mice. A better renal histology was observed after MT treatment. Further, MT inhibited the expression of the phospho-NFκB p65 protein/NFκB p65 protein (p-p65)/p65, phospho-inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase beta subunit/inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase beta subunit (p-IKKβ/IKKβ), Bcl-2-associated X (Bax), and Cleaved Caspase 3/Caspase 3 proteins, while the expression of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), Recombinant NADH Dehydrogenase, Quinone 1 (NQO1), and B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) was increased. The present study showed that MT ameliorated renal injury, which mainly occurs through the regulation of the Nrf2 pathway, the NF-κB pathway, and the suppression of renal tissue apoptosis. Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease resulting from either obstruction or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. Oxidative stress (OS), referred to a status where cellular oxidative capacities overwhelm antioxidative defenses, is involved in the pathophysiology of stroke. The bibliometric analysis and in-depth review aim to depict the research trend of OS in stroke. Relevant scientific publications were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Scientific landscape of OS in stroke was illustrated by general quantitative trend, impactful journals, and co-authorship of various academic units (i.e., countries/regions, organizations, and authors). Furthermore, theme analysis predicting the hot research issues and frontiers was performed. 15,826 documents regarding OS in stroke were obtained over a time span of more than 20 years from 1992 to 2021. The overall tendency of publication counts was continuously on the rise. Bibliometric analysis indicated China and the United States were predominant in this study field, as reflected by their high publication counts and intensive collaboration with other countries. Current key research areas of OS in stroke may lie in the investigation of neuroinflammation, and interaction among multiple cell death mechanisms including apoptosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis to search for effective treatments. Moreover, another hot topic could be the association between air pollution and stroke, and its underlying mechanisms. As the exploration of OS in stroke is speculated to be a continuous hot spot in the future, this article may be helpful for researchers to conduct future studies with the understanding of influential academic forces and research highlights. Objective: The aim of this meta-analysis is to explore all the available literature to obtain updated data about the potential use of antioxidants in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its ability to reduce disease progression and cardiovascular risk. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed strictly in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. English and Chinese databases were searched with a retrieval time up to March 2023. These databases included the PubMed, Embase, Medline Complete, Web of Sciences and Cochrane Collaboration, Wanfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and VIP databases. This literature search was formulated by the two researchers independently. The search strategy consists of reading, collecting the literature, and conducting the preliminary screening. After that, they provide the final selection of the literature according to the inclusion criteria and data extraction. Also, for all studies, the risk bias was assessed to evaluate the quality of the included references. The content of the risk assessment of bias included the following criteria: random allocation method, allocation plan hiding, blind method, completeness of result data, and selectivity of reporting of results, as well as other biases. The main outcomes were clinical efficiency of antioxidant therapy (C-reactive protein, DAS28 score, HAQ, Number of tender joints, etc.) and oxidative stress indicators (catalase, superoxide dismutase, or total antioxidant capacity). Results: We observed, in most of the studies, the small or moderate effects of antioxidant treatment. The mean effect size is 0.525, and that means that moderate effects were observed in 30 selected RCTs. Also, this effect is confirmed in the 1652 patients with RA with the mean confidence interval of 0.276 (lower limit) and 0.983 (upper limit). Cohen coefficient was calculated at 0.05. Conclusion: The existing evidence is that antioxidants can reduce systemic and local oxidative stress and can reduce damage as the main agent involved in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Background: Traditional Chinese Medicines have been used for thousands of years but without any sound empirical basis. One such preparation is the Qijudihuang pill (QP), a mixture of eight herbs, that has been used in China for the treatment of various conditions including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in the aged population. In order to explain the mechanism behind the effect ofQP, we used an AMDmodel of high-fat diet (HFD) fed mice to investigate cholesterol homeostasis, oxidative stress, inflammation and gut microbiota. Methods: Mice were randomly divided into three groups, one group was fed with control diet (CD), the other two groups were fed with high-fat-diet (HFD). One HFD group was treated with QP, both CD and the other HFD groups were treated with vehicles. Tissue samples were collected after the treatment. Cholesterol levels in retina, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), liver and serum were determined using a commercial kit. The expression of enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism, inflammation and oxidative stress was measured with qRT-PCR. Gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: In the majority of the lipid determinations, analytes were elevated by HFD but thiswas reversed by QP. Cholesterol metabolism including the enzymes of bile acid (BA) formationwas suppressed by HFD but again thiswas reversed by QP. BAs play amajor role in signaling between host andmicrobiome and this is disrupted by HFD resulting in major changes in the composition of colonic bacterial communities. Associated with these changes are predictions of the metabolic pathway complexity and abundance of individual pathways. These concerned substrate breakdowns, energy production and the biosynthesis of proinflammatory factors but were changed back to control characteristics by QP. Conclusion: We propose that the ability of QP to reverse these HFD-induced effects is related to mechanisms acting to lower cholesterol level, oxidative stress and inflammation, and to modulate gut microbiota. Objective: Our aim was to analyze the trends and hotspots on glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) within the area of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by using a bibliometric method, which is currently missing. Methods: All articles and reviews on GFAP within the area of AD from inception to December 31, 2022, were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection. Full records were derived, imported into Microsoft Excel, and analyzed by BIBLIOMETRC, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results: In total, 2,269 publications, including 2,166 articles, were ultimately included. The number of publications from 81 countries/regions and 527 academic journals increased annually. The top three prolific countries and institutions were the USA, China, and England, the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul (Brasilia), and UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (England). Henrik Zetterberg from the University of Gothenburg, Kaj Blennow from the University of Gothenburg, and Alexei Verkhratsky from the University of Manchester were the top three prolific and cited authors; Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, Brain Research, and Neuroscience contributed the most publications. The top key areas of research included "molecular, biology, and genetics" and "molecular, biology, and immunology," and the top published and linked meaningful keywords included oxidative stress, inflammation/neuroinflammation, microglia, hippocampus, amyloid, cognitive impairment, tau, and dysfunction. Conclusion: Based on the bibliometric analysis, the number of publications on GFAP within the area of AD has been rapidly increasing, especially in the past several years. Background: Studies suggest that thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity exposure during pregnancy may contribute to changes in placental morphology and pathophysiology. However, little is known about the association of maternal TPOAb during pregnancy with placental morphology and cytokines. This study focuses on the effect of repeated measurements of maternal TPOAb during pregnancy on the placental morphology and cytokines. Methods: Based on Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) in China, maternal TPOAb levels were retrospectively detected in the first, second and third trimesters. Placental tissues were collected 30 minutes after childbirth, placental morphological indicators were obtained by immediate measurement and formula calculation, and cytokine mRNA expression was detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) afterward. Generalized linear models and linear mixed models were analyzed for the relationships of maternal TPOAb in the first, second and third trimesters with placental indicators. Results: Totally 2274 maternal-fetal pairs were included in the analysis of maternal TPOAb levels and placental morphology, and 2122 pairs were included in that of maternal TPOAb levels and placental cytokines. Maternal TPOAb levels in early pregnancy were negatively associated with placental length, thickness, volume, weight and disc eccentricity, while positively correlated with placental IL-6, TNF-a, CRP, CD68, MCP-1, IL-10, HO-1, HIF-1α and GRP78. In mid-pregnancy, maternal TPOAb levels were negatively correlated with placental length, width and area. In late pregnancy, maternal TPOAb levels were negatively correlated with placental length, area, volume and weight. Repeated measures analysis showed that maternal TPOAb positivity tended to increase placental TNF-a, CD68 and MCP-1 while decreasing placental length, width and area than TPOAb negativity. Repeated measures analysis showed that maternal TPOAb levels were positively correlated with placental IL-6, TNF-α, CD68, MCP-1, IL-10, HO-1, HIF-1α and GRP78, while negatively correlated with placental length, area, volume, weight, and disc eccentricity. Conclusion: There may be trimester-specific associations between maternal TPOAb levels and placental morphology and inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. The effect of maternal TPOAb levels on placental morphology is present throughout pregnancy. Adequate blood supply, a prerequisite for flap survival after grafting, makes angiogenesis of the flap the biggest problem to be solved. Researches have been conducted around vascularisation in correlation with flap grafting. However, bibliometric analyses systematically examining this research field are lacking. As such, we herein sought to conduct comprehensive comparative analyses of the contributions of different researchers, institutions, and countries to this research space in an effort to identify trends and hotspots in angiogenesis and vascularisation in the context of flap grafting. Publications pertaining to angiogenesis and vascularisation in the context of flap grafting were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. References were then analysed and plotted using Microsoft Excel 2019, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace V. In total, 2234 papers that were cited 40 048 times (17.63 citations/paper) were included in this analysis. The greatest number of studies were from the United States, with these studies exhibiting both the highest number of citations (13 577) and the greatest overall H‐index (60). For The institutions that published the greatest number of studies were WENZHOU MEDICAL UNIVERSITY (681), while UNIVERSITY OF ERLANGEN NUREMBERG has the highest number of citations (1458), and SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY holds the greatest overall H‐index (20). The greatest number of studies in this research space were published by Gao WY, while Horch RE was the most commonly cited researcher in the field. The VOS viewer software clustered relevant keywords into three clusters, with clusters 1, 2, 3, and 4 corresponding to studies in which the keywords 'anatomy', 'survival', 'transplantation', 'therapy' most frequently appeared. The most promising research hotspot‐related terms in this field included 'autophagy', 'oxidative stress', 'ischemia/reperfusion injury', which exhibited a most recent average appearing year (AAY) of 2017 and after. Generally speaking, the results of this analysis indicate that the number of articles exploring angiogenesis and flap‐related research has risen steadily, with the United States and China being the two countries publishing the greatest proportion of studies in this field. The overall focus of these studies has shifted away from 'infratest and tissue engineering' towards 'mechanisms'. In the future, particular attention should be paid to emerging research hotspots, which include 'ischemia/reperfusion injury' and treatments for promoting vascularization, such as 'platelet‐rich plasma'. In light of these findings, funding agencies should continue increasing their investment in the exploration of the concrete mechanisms and interventional therapeutic relevance of angiogenesis during flap transplantation. Objectives: Diet can influence peripheral leukocyte telomere length (LTL), and various micronutrients have been reported to correlate with it. Zinc is known for its antioxidant properties and immunomodulatory effects. However, there are few epidemiological investigations on the relationship between dietary zinc intake and LTL. This study analyzed the association between dietary zinc and LTL and the potential role of inflammation and oxidative stress among them. Design: Cross-sectional and community-based study. Setting and Participants: 599 participants from rural communities in the Changping suburb of Beijing, China, were recruited. Measurements: Serum lipid profile, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), oxidative stress marker, and inflammatory cytokines levels were measured. Detailed dietary data were obtained using a 24 h food recall. LTL was assessed using a real-time PCR assay. Spearman analysis, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and general linear regression models were used to determine the association between dietary zinc intake and LTL. Simple regulatory models were also applied to analyze the role of inflammation and oxidative stress among them. Results: A total of 482 subjects were ultimately included in this analysis. Spearman analysis showed that dietary zinc intake and zinc intake under energy density were negatively correlated with LTL (r=−0.142 and −0.126, all P <0.05) and positively correlated with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (r=0.138 and 0.202, all P <0.05) while only dietary zinc without energy adjustment had a positive correlation with superoxide dismutase (SOD). RCS (P for non-linearity=0.933) and multiple linear regression (B=−0.084, P=0.009) indicated a negative linear association between dietary zinc and LTL. The adjustment of TNF-α rather than SOD could abolish the relationship. The mediation model suggested that the unfavorable effect of dietary zinc on LTL was mediated by TNF-α. Conclusions: High dietary zinc may correlate with telomere attrition, and TNF-α can act as a mediator in this relationship. Consuming ethnic vegetable dishes, that has been an integral part in the food culture of many countries, is suggested to bring health benefits to humans. Kimchi from Korea and pao cai from China are two distinct vegetable dishes made from Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) through different processes. While kimchi is a fermented food, pao cai is produced by pickling in brine or vinegar. The present study aimed to investigate and compare the hepatoprotective effects of kimchi and pao cai in vivo using animal model and in vitro using a cell line. Despite having similar nutritional profiles, kimchi and pao cai exhibited different chemical and microbiological properties. Compared to pao cai, the pH during fermentation of kimchi dropped more rapidly and the antioxidant activity of kimchi was also stronger. In addition, total microorganisms and lactic acid bacteria were consistently higher in kimchi than in pao cai. In vivo, the hepatoprotective properties of kimchi and pao cai were associated with the increase in expression and activity of major liver antioxidant enzymes, particularly glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. In vitro, both kimchi and pao cai promoted the formation of glutathione. Upon exposure to chemically induced oxidative stress, kimchi protected liver cells by inhibiting glutathione depletion and limiting lipid peroxidation. In general, kimchi demonstrated stronger hepatoprotective properties compared to pao cai. Background: Aging is an important pathogenic factor of age-related diseases and has brought huge health threat and economic burden to the society. Dendrobium nobile Lindl., a valuable herb in China, promotes longevity according to the record of ancient Chinese materia medica. This study aimed to discover the material basis of D. nobile as an anti-aging herb and elucidate its action mechanism. Methods: K6001 yeast replicative lifespan assay was used to guide the isolation of D. nobile. The chronological lifespan assay of YOM36 yeast was further conducted to confirm the anti-aging activity of dendrobine. The mechanism in which dendrobine exerts anti-aging effect was determined by conducting anti-oxidative stress assay, quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot, measurements of anti-oxidant enzymes activities, determination of nuclear translocation of Rim15 and Msn2, and replicative lifespan assays of Δsod1, Δsod2, Δcat, Δgpx, Δatg2, Δatg32, and Δrim15 yeasts. Results: Under the guidance of K6001 yeast replicative lifespan system, dendrobine with anti-aging effect was isolated from D. nobile. The replicative and chronological lifespans of yeast were extended upon dendrobine treatment. In the study of action mechanism, dendrobine improved the survival rate of yeast under oxidative stress, decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, and enhanced the enzyme activities and gene expression of superoxide dismutase and catalase, but it failed to elongate the replicative lifespans of Δsod1, Δsod2, Δcat, and Δgpx yeast mutants. Meanwhile, dendrobine enhanced autophagy occurrence in yeast but had no effect on the replicative lifespans of Δatg2 and Δatg32 yeast mutants. Moreover, the inhibition of Sch9 phosphorylation and the promotion of nuclear translocation of Rim15 and Msn2 were observed after treatment with denrobine. However, the effect of dendrobine disappeared from the Δrim15 yeast mutant after lifespan extension, oxidative stress reduction, and autophagy enhancement. Conclusions: Dendrobine exerts anti-aging activity in yeast via the modification of oxidative stress and autophagy through the Sch9/Rim15/Msn2 signaling pathway. Introduction: Oxaliplatin is a third-generation platinum-based antineoplastic drug that is widely used to treat patients with colorectal cancer. Reported adverse reactions include hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome and liver fibrosis, but there are few reports of cirrhosis associated with chemotherapy. In addition, the pathogenesis of cirrhosis remains unclear. Case report: We report a case of suspected oxaliplatin-induced liver cirrhosis, an adverse reaction that has not been previously reported. Management and outcome: A 50-year-old Chinese man was diagnosed with rectal cancer and underwent laparoscopic radical rectal cancer surgery. The patient had a history of schistosomiasis, but history and serology showed no evidence of chronic liver disease. However, after five oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy cycles, the patient presented dramatic changes in liver morphology and developed splenomegaly, massive ascites, and elevated CA125 levels. Four months after discontinuing oxaliplatin, the patient's ascites had decreased significantly and CA125 levels declined from 505.3 to 124.6 mU/mL. After 15 weeks of follow-up, CA125 levels decreased to the normal range, and there has been no increase in ascites in this patient. The oxidative stress-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in tumor prognosis. In the GSE53625 dataset, we identified 332 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) between ESCC and control samples, out of which 174 were oxidative stress-related DElncRNAs. Subsequently, seven oxidative stress-related DElncRNAs (CCR5AS, LINC01749, PCDH9-AS1, TMEM220-AS1, KCNMA1-AS1, SNHG1, LINC01672) were selected based on univariate and LASSO Cox to build a prognostic risk model, and their expression was detected by RT-qPCR. The model exhibited an excellent ability for the prediction of overall survival (OS) and other clinicopathological traits using Kaplan–Meier (K-M) survival curves, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and the Wilcoxon test. Exposure to air pollution is linked with an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and CVDs-related mortality. However, there is a shortage of scientometric analysis on this topic. Therefore, we propose a scientometric study to explore research hotspots and directions in this topical field over the past decade. We used the core collection of Web of Science (WoS) to obtain relevant publications and analyzed them using Excel, the Bibliometix R-package, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer. The study covered various aspects such as annual publications, highly cited papers, co-cited references, journals, authors, countries, organizations, and keywords. Research on air pollution and CVDs has remarkable increase over the past decade, with notable researchers including Kan H, Brook RD, Peters A, and Schwartz J. The 3144 articles were published by 4448 institutions in 131 countries/regions. The leading countries were the USA and China, and the most published journal was Environmental Research. Mortality, hospital admissions, oxidative stress, inflammation, long-term exposure, fine particulate matter, and PM2.5 are the top areas that merit further investigation and hold significant potential for advancing our understanding of the complex relationship between air pollution and CVDs. Objectives. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a widely used method for treating dengue fever in China. TCM improves the symptoms of patients with dengue, but there is no standard TCM prescription for dengue fever. This real-world study aimed to evaluate the effects of Chai-Shi-Jie-Du (CSJD) granules for the treatment of dengue fever and the underlying mechanisms. Methods. We implemented a multicenter real-world study, an in vitro assay and network pharmacology analysis. Patients from 5 hospitals in mainland China who received supportive western treatment in the absence or presence of CSJD were assigned to the control and CSJD groups between 1 August and 31 December 2019. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to correct for biases between groups. The clinical data were compared and analyzed. The antidengue virus activity of CSJD was tested in Syrian baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells using the DENV2-NGC strain. Network pharmacological approaches along with active compound screening, target prediction, and GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were used to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms. Results. 137 pairs of patients were successfully matched according to age, sex, and the time from onset to presentation. The time to defervescence (1.7 days vs. 2.5 days, P < 0.05) and the disease course (4.1 days vs. 6.1 days, P < 0.05) were significantly shorter in the CSJD group than those in the control group. CSJD showed no anti-DENV2-NGC virus activity in BHK cells. Network pharmacology analysis revealed 108 potential therapeutic targets, and the top GO and KEGG terms were related to immunity, oxidative stress response, and the response to lipopolysaccharide. Conclusions. CSJD granules exhibit high potential for the treatment of dengue fever, and the therapeutic mechanisms involved could be related to regulating immunity, moderating the oxidative stress response, and the response to lipopolysaccharide. Simple Summary: The large yellow croaker is one of the most economically valuable marine fish in China. However, ammonia accumulates in its blood through the gills and causes fish poisoning. In the past years, few studies have focused on the toxic effects of acute ammonia exposure on fish, especially on the large yellow croaker. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute ammonia exposure on the hematological parameters, hepatic oxidative stress, gill morphological changes and meat quality of the large yellow croaker. Exposure of large yellow croakers to four ammonia solutions at concentrations of 0, 2.96, 5.92, and 8.87 mg/L for 48 h revealed changes in serum composition, as well as oxidative stress, tissue damage in liver and gills, accumulation of free amino acids, and loss of nucleotides. Ammonia is considered to be the major chemical pollutant causing fish poisoning in aquaculture. This research aimed to evaluate the impact of acute ammonia exposure on the large yellow croaker's meat quality, gill morphology, liver oxidative stress, and hematological parameters. The fish were exposed to total ammonia nitrogen concentrations of 0, 2.96, 5.92, and 8.87 mg/L for 48 h, respectively. The findings demonstrated that all ammonia-exposed fish had higher liver lactate dehydrogenase and glutamic oxalate transaminase activities. The glucose, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine levels in 8.87 mg/L total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) were higher than other samples. The total protein, albumin, and triglyceride levels in serum decreased significantly in ammonia-exposed samples. After 48 h of ammonia exposure, superoxide dismutase activities showed a 76.1%, 118.0%, and 156.8% increase when fish were exposed to 2.96, 5.92, and 8.87 mg/L TAN, respectively. Catalase activities and glutathione contents were considerably higher (p < 0.05) in all ammonia-treated samples compared to 0 mg/L TAN. The ammonia-treated gill lamellae become thicker, shorter, and curved. Additionally, the ammonia exposure resulted in the accumulation of free amino acids and the loss of nucleotides. The inosine monophosphate and adenosine monophosphate contents in the flesh were decreased after 12 h of exposure to 2.96, 5.92, and 8.87 mg/L ammonia compared to the control group. Overall, large yellow croakers exposed to ammonia for 6 h presented not only changes in serum composition but also oxidative stress, liver and gill tissue damage and flesh quality deterioration. In China, animal feeds are frequently contaminated with a range of mycotoxins, with Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and T-2 toxin (T-2) being two highly toxic mycotoxins. This study investigates the combined nephrotoxicity of AFB1 and T-2 on PK15 cells and murine renal tissues and their related oxidative stress mechanisms. PK15 cells were treated with the respective toxin concentrations for 24 h, and oxidative stress-related indicators were assessed. The results showed that the combination of AFB1 and T-2 led to more severe cellular damage and oxidative stress compared to exposure to the individual toxins (p < 0.05). In the in vivo study, pathological examination revealed that the kidney tissue of mice exposed to the combined toxins showed signs of glomerular atrophy. The contents of oxidative stress-related indicators were significantly increased in the kidney tissue (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the combined toxins cause significant oxidative damage to mouse kidneys. The study highlights the importance of considering the combined effects of mycotoxins in animal feed, particularly AFB1 and T-2, which can lead to severe nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress in PK15 cells and mouse kidneys. Epilepsy is a serious public health problem in the world. At present, over 30% of affected patients remain refractory to currently available treatment. Medicinal plants as pharmaceuticals and healthcare treatments have been frequently used in the management of epilepsy in China for many centuries. Gastrodia elata-Acous tatarinowii (GEAT), as a classic and most commonly used herb pair in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been employed to control seizures for thousands of years. However, the animal experiment data on its anticonvulsant effect is limited in the literature. Thus, this study aimed to reveal the therapeutic actions of GEAT decoction against seizures in mice. UHPLC-MS/MS was performed to analyze the chemical components of GEAT decoction. The mice were given GEAT decoction for 7 days, and MES, PTZ, and 3-MP injection was given 30 min after the last administration. Video monitoring was performed for comparisons. In addition, the PTZ-induced kindling models were conducted to investigate the seizure severity, anxiety and cognitive profile, inflammation, and oxidative stress parameters in mice. The results showed that GEAT decoction dose-dependently protected mice against MES, 3-MP, and PTZ-induced acute seizures. Furthermore, GEAT decoction significantly ameliorated seizure severity, decreased the accumulation of inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, mitigated oxidative stress, as well as alleviated anxious-like behavior and cognitive deficits in PTZ-kindled mice. These results suggest that GEAT decoction possesses certain anticonvulsant properties, which might be clinically useful as phytotherapy alone or as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of seizures and epilepsy.
