Background: There is a lack of epidemiological studies on the course and clinical characteristics of Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections in kidney transplant (KT) recipients. This study was undertaken to provide recommendations for clinical B19V infection diagnosis and treatment., Methods: Serum samples of KT recipients were regularly collected and tested for B19V-DNA copies, B19V-IgG/IgM levels, as well as hematological parameters and functions of kidney and liver. The course of B19V infection was described according to the results of serology and DNA testing, and the clinical and epidemiological data were combined for analysis., Results: 75% B19V infections occurred within 2 weeks after KT(n = 9). The infection rate of B19V in KT recipients was high, namely 10.17% (n = 12). The number of 10 patients IgM antibodies against B19V (IgM+) and theDNA B19V (DNA+), whereas 2 patients were IgM negative (IgM-) but DNA+. The B19V infected KT patients showed several symptoms, including anemia (100%), reduction of platelets (8.33%), and damage to liver (75%) and kidney function (16.67%) Patients with progressive anemia in the first two weeks after KT, which combined with the decrease of reticulocytes, are more likely to have B19V infection. Associations of four main therapeutic risk factors for B19V infections in KT patients have been analyzed. B19V infection was associated with use of basiliximab (OR = 1.19; 95%- CI: 1.08-1.32; P = 0.003) and use of thymoglobulins (OR = 0.84; 95%-CI: 0.76-0.93; P = 0.003)., Conclusions: Doctors should be alert to B19V infection, especially in the immunodeficient patients within the first two weeks after transplantation., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). Background: Pneumonia has a high incidence rate and is a major cause of mortality in children, mostly community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Human bocavirus (HBoV), since it first identified in 2005, has been repeatedly associated with respiratory tract infections. Nevertheless, the role and related information of HBoV as a pathogen of CAP has not been fulfilled. Here our study is to assess the epidemiological and clinical features in HBoV-positive children with CAP., Methods: A total of 878 secretions of lower respiratory samples were obtained, multiplex PCR was used to detect HBoV and other respiratory viruses., Results: Of all cases, HBoV was detected in 10.0%, with a peak incidence of infection among children < 2 year old, and predominantly noted in autumn and winter. Only 8 patients were HBoV single infection. Co-infection with other respiratory viruses was observed in 86.4%. Moreover, co-infection with bacteria occurred in 27.3% and with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) in 33.0% of HBoV-positive patients. Among all HBoV-positive samples co-infected with bacteria, 87.5% are gram negative bacteria. Compared with HBoV-negative group, age (P = 0.048), wheezing (P = 0.015), tachypnea (P = 0.016), lactate dehydrogenase (P = 0.026) and severe pneumonia (P = 0.023) were statistically significant in HBoV-positive patients. Furthermore, HBoV-positive patients less than 1 year old were more likely to have co-infection with bacteria (P = 0.007)., Conclusions: HBoV can be detected alone in respiratory samples of children with CAP, maybe it is one of the causes of CAP in infants. The high incidence of severe pneumonia was found in HBoV-positive patients compared with HBoV-negative cases may indicate a relationship between severe pneumonia and HBoV., (© 2021. The Author(s).)

Goose astrovirus is a novel and distinct astrovirus that causes fatal visceral gout in 4- to 21-day-old goslings. Goose parvovirus is the etiologic agent of Derzsy disease, an acute, contagious, and fatal disease that affects mainly young goslings. This paper describes the clinical signs and gross and histopathologic features of co-infection with astrovirus and goose parvovirus. Clinical signs and history included increased mortality, depression, anorexia, enteritis, joint swelling, and paralysis. Postmortem examination showed a considerable amount of urate covering the internal organs, especially the heart, liver, and kidney. Some goslings had swollen duodenum and ileum. Histologic lesions in the kidney, liver, spleen, lung, proventriculus, and brain included hemorrhage, congestion, edema, cell necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, and an eosinophilic protein-like substance in renal tubules. The extensive infiltration of heterophil myelocytes into the kidney, spleen, liver, lung, bursa of Fabricius, and pancreas is a new finding.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess epidemiological and clinical features of human bocavirus (HBoV) coinfection with other viruses., Method: Children coinfected with HBoV between January 2012 and December 2014 were enrolled and retrospectively reviewed., Result: A total of 984 patients were stratified into five groups: HBoV infection alone (n = 249), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection alone (n = 649), HBoV coinfection with RSV (n = 28), with human rhinovirus (HRV) (n = 39) and with other virus (n = 19). Length of hospitalization was longer in HBoV coinfection with RSV group than HBoV (9.0 days vs. 7.0 days, p = 0.001), RSV (9.0 days vs. 8.0 days, p = 0.016) infection alone group. Pneumonia was more common in the HBoV coinfection with RSV group compared with the HBoV, RSV infection alone group, respectively (75.0% vs. 44.2%, 31.3%, p < 0.001). HBoV DNA copy numbers (383 000 copies/ml) were positively correlated with the length of hospitalization (r = 0.334, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: HBoV coinfection with RSV increases HBoV infection severity., (© The Author(s) [2018]. Objective: To establish an efficient, convenient and quantitative method for the clinical detection of the duck-origin goose parvovirus., Method: In the present study, a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was established for detecting the duck-origin goose parvovirus using the fluorescent chimeric dye SYBR Green II. Specific primers were designed to target a highly conserved region of the VP3 gene of the duck-origin goose parvovirus., Results: This method was able to detect a minimum of 19.6 copies/μL of viral genomic DNA. Results showed that this method was faster and had a higher sensitivity than the traditional PCR in the clinical specimen test. In this paper, we developed a rapid, sensitive detection and quantitative analysis technology for the duck-origin goose parvovirus by real-time PCR assay., Conclusion: This test provides improved technical support for studies regarding the clinical diagnosis and epidemiological investigations of the duck-origin goose parvovirus., (© 2019 S. Seroepidemiology studies had been used to research the newly discovered human bocaviruses (HBoVs). Antibodies against the HBoV1-4 VP2 protein virus-like particles (VLPs) were found to be cross-reactive. The aim of the present study was to characterize the seroprevalence of HBoV1 and 2 among healthy populations in China. Recombinant HBoV1 and 2 VLPs were used to establish enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for detection of cross-reactivity between HBoV1 and HBoV2 in 1391 serum samples collected from healthy individuals in China. Of these, 884 samples were collected from Beijing and 507 were from Nanjing. Infection with HBoV1 and 2 was prevalent in healthy Chinese people, with the seroprevalence of HBoV1 and 2 in Beijing at 69.2 (612/884) and 64.4% (569/884), respectively. Highest seroprevalence was observed in 3-5-year-olds. The seroprevalence of HBoV1 was significantly decreased between 10-13-year-olds (80.3%) and 14-20-year-olds (62.3%, p< 0.05). For individuals over 20 years, seroprevalence was relatively constant at about 60%. Similar trends were observed in children from Nanjing, with seroprevalence of HBoV1 and 2 for healthy children at 80.7% (409/507) and 81.3% (412/507), respectively. Moreover, both mouse and human antibodies against HBoV1 and HBoV2 VLPs were found to be cross-reactive and 58.4% (813/1391) serum samples were seropositive for both HBoV1 and HBoV2. This finding suggests HBoV is highly prevalent in China and the antibodies produced as a result of infection with either HBoV1 or HBoV 2 will offer future protection. The cross-reactivity between HBoVs is crucial for accurately determining HBoV seroepidemiology.

Background: Human bocavirus is a newly discovered parvovirus. Multiple studies have confirmed the presence of human bocavirus1 (HBoV1) in respiratory tract samples of children. The viral load, presentation of single detection and its role as a causative agent of severe respiratory tract infections have not been thoroughly elucidated., Methods: We investigated the presence of HBoV1 by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens from 1229 children hospitalized for respiratory tract infections. The samples were analyzed for 15 respiratory viruses by PCR and 7 respiratory viruses by viral culture., Results: At least one virus was detected in 652 (53.1%) of 1229 children, and two or more viruses were detected in 266 (21.6%) children. HBoV1 was detected in 127 children (10.3%), in which 66/127 (52%) of the cases were the only HBoV1 virus detected. Seasonal variation was observed with a high HBoV1 infection rate in summer. A cutoff value of 107 copies/mL was used to distinguish high and low HBoV1 viral loads in the nasopharyngeal aspirates. High viral loads of HBoV1 were noted predominantly in the absence of other viral agents (28/39, 71.8%) whereas there was primarily co-detection in cases of low HBoV1 viral loads (50/88, 56.8%). There were no differences in the clinical symptoms and severity between HBoV1 single detection and co-detection. In cases of HBoV1 single detection, the high viral load group was more prevalent among children with dyspnea and wheezing than was the low viral load group (42.9% vs. 23.7%, P = 0.036; 60.7% vs. 31.6%, P = 0.018). In clinical severity, a significant difference was recorded (25.0% vs. 5.3%, P = 0.003) between high viral load and low viral load groups. Of the HBoV1 positive patients associated with severe respiratory tract infections, 10/18 (55.6%) patients belonged to the HBoV1 high viral load group, and 7/10 (70%) patients had cases of HBoV1 single detection., Conclusions: HBoV1 at a high viral load is not frequently found in co-detection with other respiratory viruses, and a single detection with a high viral load could be an etiological agent of severe respiratory tract infections.

Objective: We investigated the incidence of human parvovirus B19 (HPV B19) infection after renal transplantation as well as the risk of anemia and renal allograft damage among infected transplant recipients in China., Methods: We selected 114 patients at 1-18 months after renal transplantation for detection of HPV B19 DNA copies compared with a control population. Renal function and hematopoiesis were compared between infected and noninfected groups., Results: Twenty-seven patients diagnosed with HPV B19 infection during follow-up (18.75%),which was a significantly higher number than among the general population over the same period. Infected versus nonaffected patients exhibited a significantly higher incidence of anemia and urinary abnormalities in addition to significantly lower values of hemoglobin, higher serum creatinine concentrations, and lower glomerular filtration rates. The 2 groups did not differ in the types or doses of calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) immunosuppressants. Two cases of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) as confirmed using bone marrow biopsy, were observed in the infected group. They displayed HPV B19 DNA copy numbers >10(7)/mL and segmental mesangial cell proliferation on renal biopsy. The PRCA cases were cured with immunomodulatory therapy., Conclusions: The HPV B19 infection rate was significantly higher among renal transplant recipients than normal controls. Infections correlated with damage to the renal allograft, which may in turn cause PRCA. Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a parvovirus and detected worldwide in lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), but its pathogenic role in respiratory illness is still debatable due to high incidence of co-infection with other respiratory viruses. To determine the prevalence of HBoV infection in patients with LRTI in Shanghai and its correlation with disease severity, we performed a 3-year prospective study of HBoV in healthy controls, outpatients and inpatients under five years of age with X-ray diagnosed LRTIs. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested by PCR for common respiratory viruses and by real time PCR for HBoV subtypes 1-4. Nasopharyngeal swabs from healthy controls and serum samples and stools from inpatients were also tested for HBoV1-4 by real time PCR. Viral loads were determined by quantitative real time PCR in all HBoV positive samples. HBoV1 was detected in 7.0% of inpatients, with annual rates of 5.1%, 8.0% and 4.8% in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) subtype A was the most frequent co-infection detected; HBoV1 and RSVA appeared to co-circulate with similar seasonal variations. High HBoV viral loads (>10(6) copies/ml) were significantly more frequent in inpatients and outpatients than in healthy controls. There was a direct correlation of high viral load with increasing disease severity in patients co-infected with HBoV1 and at least one other respiratory virus. In summary, our data suggest that HBoV1 can cause LRTIs, but symptomatic HBoV infection is only observed in the context of high viral load.

Our study investigated the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in adult patients with upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) between August 2009 and September 2010 in Jinan, northern China. Nasal and throat swabs (n = 596) were collected from adult patients with URTIs. Nine respiratory-related viruses, including IFV, PIV, HRV, HMPV, HBoV, HCoV, ADV, RSV, and EV, were detected in all samples by conventional and reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions. Positive detection rate for respiratory virus was 38.76% and codetection rate was 4.70% in adults with acute respiratory tract infections. IFV (20.81%) was the dominant agent detected and IFVB had a higher incidence (12.58%) than IFVA (7.72%). Detection rates of 8.22%, 5.03%, 3.69%, and 2.52% were observed for HBoV, HRV, EV, and RSV, respectively. HCoV had the lowest detection rate of 0.50%. HBoV, HRV, EV, and ADV infection rates were higher in the 14-25-year-old group than in the 26-65-year-old group. Codetection rates were higher (7.52%) in the 14-25-year-old group than in the older age group (2.64%). The spectrum of respiratory virus infection in adult patients with URTIs was different in Jinan compared with other cities in China.

Background: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is one of the leading causes of death in children worldwide. Human bocavirus 2 (HBoV2) was recently identified in stool samples and is involved in the pathogenesis of AGE, but the current data were too limited to clarify this issue., Objective: We conducted a case-control study on 632 children with diarrhea and 162 healthy controls in Lanzhou, China, to assess the role of HBoV2 in gastroenteritis., Study Design: Viruses known or suspected to be agents of AGE, including RV, HucV, AdV, AstV, and HBoVs, were detected. Viral loads of HBoV2 were quantified by Real-time PCR., Results: HBoV2 was detected in 129 (20.4%) and 20 (12.3%) of the gastroenteritis and control samples, respectively. The association between HBoV2 and gastroenteritis was weaker (OR = 1.269, CI= 0.704-2.288) than that between gastroenteritis and RV, HucV, AdV, or AstV, as determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The data also suggested that infection with HBoV2 did not exacerbate the clinical symptoms of gastroenteritis. Mean HBoV2 viral load in the case and control groups was fewer than 55 copies/ml extract., Conclusions: HBoV2 exhibit different epidemiological features from HBoV1 and HBoV3. Serum samples from 92 giant pandas in three captive facilities were tested for antibodies against five viruses of carnivores. Antibody titers against canine distemper virus (CDV) in two facilities in which giant pandas were vaccinated were variable. The canine adenovirus (CAV-1) and canine parvovirus (CPV) titers in vaccinated group were both positive, but titers were not high and varied among individual except one vaccinated panda had extremely high CAV-1 titer, indicating infection with the field virus following vaccination. Our results suggest that the vaccines used for these giant pandas do not elicit consistent antibody titers. Antibody titers against CDV, CPV and CAV-1 in unvaccinated giant pandas were highly variable, especially CPV titer. Almost half of sera were CPV antibody positive, and CPV titers were high enough to suggest infection with the virus. Canine coronavirus (CCV) and canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV) titers were not detected in all serum samples. Background: Human bocavirus (HBoV) was recently discovered in children with respiratory tract disease and gastroenteritis. The causative role of HBoV in human gastroenteritis remains uncertain, and, to our knowledge, no previous case-control study has studied the relationship between HBoV and gastroenteritis., Methods: We conducted a case-control study that examined stool samples from 397 children with diarrhea and from 115 asymptomatic control subjects. HBoV was detected using polymerase chain reaction. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to quantify the HBoV loads in case and control groups. Common enteric viruses were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, polymerase chain reaction, and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction., Results: At least 1 viral agent was discovered in 60.2% of cases. HBoV was detected in 14 samples, and 9 were coinfected with either rotavirus (7 of 14 samples) or human calicivirus (2 of 14). Many (8 [57.1%] of 14) of the HBoV infections occurred during September-December 2006. Most (12 [85.7%]) of the HBoV-infected children were 7-18 months of age. The percentage of children with HBoV infection did not differ significantly between case patients and control subjects (3.5% vs. 3.5%), and the statistical analysis did not support a correlation between HBoV infection and more-severe clinical symptoms. The viral load differences between the 2 groups were not statistically significant (P = .09, by log-normal Student's t test). In addition, the VP1/VP2 partial gene of HBoV from case patients and control subjects showed minimal sequence variation., Conclusions: A single genetic lineage of HBoV was revealed in persons in China. Despite its high prevalence in stool samples, our study does not support a causative role of HBoV in gastroenteritis.
