Do network connections between government officials and administrative units facilitate efficient land use contracting across jurisdictions? This article leverages data from a groundbreaking policy in China where a strict quota-bound land use policy was replaced with an alternative, allowing between-county trade in land conversion quotas. We unpack the determinants of the boundary between trading and autarkic jurisdictions and unveil leader-related drivers of transaction costs between jurisdictions in a gravity-style estimation. We catalogue personal and career histories of county-level leaders and present evidence that leader networks derived from employment history are robustly trade-facilitating but nonworkplace links are not. Aim: To investigate the associations of individual and combined healthy lifestyle factors (HLS) with the risk of stroke in individuals with diabetes in China. Methods: This prospective analysis included 41 314 individuals with diabetes [15 191 from the Comprehensive Research on the Prevention and Control of the Diabetes (CRPCD) project and 26 123 from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) study]. Associations of lifestyle factors, including cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diet, body shape and sleep duration, with the risk of stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and ischaemic stroke (IS) were assessed using Cox proportional hazard models. Results: During median follow‐up periods of 8.02 and 9.05 years, 2499 and 4578 cases of stroke, 2147 and 4024 of IS, and 160 and 728 of ICH were documented in individuals with diabetes in the CRPCD and CKB cohorts, respectively. In the CRPCD cohort, patients with ≥5 HLS had a 14% lower risk of stroke (hazard ratio (HR): 0.86, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.75‐0.98) than those with ≤2 HLS. In the CKB cohort, the adjusted HR (95% CI) for patients with ≥5 HLS were 0.74 (0.66‐0.83) for stroke, 0.74 (0.66‐0.83) for IS, and 0.57 (0.42‐0.78) for ICH compared with those with ≤2 HLS. The pooled adjusted HR (95% CI) comparing patients with ≥5 HLS versus ≤2 HLS was 0.79 (0.69‐0.92) for stroke, 0.80 (0.68‐0.93) for IS, and 0.60 (0.46‐0.78) for ICH. The agro-pastoral transitional zone in northern China is an important agricultural and pastoral production base. This study focuses on the eastern section of the agro-pastoral transitional zone in northern China. Combined with spatio-temporal analysis, stepwise regression, and gray relation analysis, we analyzed the average annual growth rate, spatio-temporal changes, and influencing factors of agricultural and pastoral production in the study area during 2000–2020. The results show that, in the past 20 years, the agricultural and pastoral production of the 50 municipal districts and counties has significantly changed, among which the agricultural production of 38 municipal districts and counties has shown an extremely significant increase. Generally, the growth rate of agricultural production is higher than that of pastoral production. Agricultural and pastoral production in the study area is influenced by socio-economic and land use/cover factors, with an average correlation degree of 0.79 and 0.88, respectively. Climate change affects agricultural production in agricultural counties, with a correlation degree of 0.85. The results of this research provide valuable insights into understanding the long-term temporal and spatial changes in agricultural and pastoral production and help to develop sound agriculture and pastoral management practices in the eastern section of the agro-pastoral transitional zone in Northern China. Accurate three-dimensional (3D) cloud structure measurements are critical for assessing the influence of clouds on the Earth's atmospheric system. This study extended the MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) cloud vertical profile (64 × 64 scene, about 70 km in width × 15 km in height) retrieval technique based on conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) to construct seamless 3D cloud fields for the MODIS granules. Firstly, the accuracy and spatial continuity of the retrievals (of 7180 samples from the validation set) were statistically evaluated. Then, according to the characteristics of the retrieval error, a spatially overlapping-scene ensemble generation method and a bidirectional ensemble binning probability fusion (CGAN-BEBPF) technique were developed, which improved the CGAN retrieval accuracy and support to construct seamless 3D clouds for the MODIS granules. The CGAN-BEBPF technique involved three steps: cloud masking, intensity scaling, and optimal value selection. It ensured adequate coverage of the low reflectivity areas while preserving the high-reflectivity cloud cores. The technique was applied to retrieve the 3D cloud fields of Typhoon Chaba and a multi-cell convective system and the results were compared with ground-based radar measurements. The cloud structures of the CGAN-BEBPF results were highly consistent with the ground-based radar observations. The CGAN-EBEPF technique retrieved weak ice clouds at the top levels that were missed by ground-based radars and filled the gaps of the ground-based radars in the lower levels. The CGAN-BEBPF was automated to retrieve 3D cloud radar reflectivity along the MODIS track over the seas to the east and south of mainland China, providing valuable cloud information to support maritime and near-shore typhoons and convection prediction for the cloud-sensitive applications in the regions. We study how a significant relaxation of internal migration restrictions affects labor market outcomes of incumbent migrants and natives, exploiting the 2014 hukou reform in China, which substantially removed the migration barriers of cities with an urban population below 5 million (nonmegacities). Using a difference-in-differences method, we find that migrants' wages in nonmegacities experienced approximately a 2.6%–7.9% decline relative to that in megacities after the policy. The policy had nonnegative impacts on the wages of natives in nonmegacities. These results suggest that the downward wage pressure imposed by new migrants falls primarily on incumbent migrants rather than on natives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How does a new epidemic affect individuals' expectations on economic prospects in the early stage of the breakout? We implemented an incentivized longitudinal online survey soon after the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) epidemic in China to answer this question. Results show that fewer new confirmed COVID‐19 cases significantly increase individuals' expectations on gross domestic product and consumer price index growth rates. Our finding provides evidence that at the early stage of an unfamiliar epidemic, containing the spread of the disease may help to maintain positive economic expectations among individuals. Introduction: This cross-sectional study evaluated the involvement of patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) in treatment decision-making, assessed the treatment efficacy according to their self-reports, and investigated the influencing factors. Methods: Patients with advanced CRC were recruited from 19 hospitals from March 2020 to March 2021 by a multi-stage multi-level sampling method. A selfdesigned questionnaire was used to collect demographic and clinical characteristics, involvement of CRC patients in treatment decision-making, treatment methods, and self-reported efficacy. Univariate and unordered multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the factors affecting the involvement in treatment decision-making and self-reported efficacy. Results: We enrolled 4533 patients with advanced CRC. The average age at diagnosis was 58.7 ± 11.8 years. For the treatment method, 32.4% of patients received surgery combined with chemotherapy, 13.1% of patients underwent surgery combined with chemotherapy and targeted therapy, and 9.7% of patients were treated with surgery alone. For treatment decision-making, 7.0% of patients were solely responsible for decision-making, 47.0% of patients shared treatment decision-making with family members, 19.0% of patients had family members solely responsible for treatment decision-making, and 27.0% of patients had their physicians solely responsible for treatment decision-making. Gender, age, education level, family income, marital status, treatment cost, hospital type, and treatment method were significantly associated with the involvement of patients in treatment decision-making. A total of 3824 patients submitted selfreported efficacy evaluations during treatment. The percentage of patients with good self-reported efficacy was 76.5% (for patients treated for the first time), 61.7% (for patients treated for the second time), and 43.2% (for patients treated after recurrence and metastasis), respectively. Occupation, education level, average annual family income, place of residence, time since cancer diagnosis, hospital type, clinical stage, targeted therapy, and involvement in treatment decision-making were the main influencing factors of self-reported efficacy of treatment. Discussion: Conclusively, CRC patients are not highly dominant in treatment decision-making and more likely to make treatment decisions with their family and doctors. Bats are reservoir hosts for many zoonotic viruses. Despite this, relatively little is known about the diversity and abundance of viruses within individual bats, and hence the frequency of virus co-infection and spillover among them. We characterize the mammal-associated viruses in 149 individual bats sampled from Yunnan province, China, using an unbiased meta-transcriptomics approach. This reveals a high frequency of virus co-infection (simultaneous infection of bat individuals by multiple viral species) and spillover among the animals studied, which may in turn facilitate virus recombination and reassortment. Of note, we identify five viral species that are likely to be pathogenic to humans or livestock, based on phylogenetic relatedness to known pathogens or in vitro receptor binding assays. This includes a novel recombinant SARS-like coronavirus that is closely related to both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. In vitro assays indicate that this recombinant virus can utilize the human ACE2 receptor such that it is likely to be of increased emergence risk. Our study highlights the common occurrence of co-infection and spillover of bat viruses and their implications for virus emergence. Viral diversity and abundance in bats are incompletely understood. Here, analyzing individual bat viromes, the authors observe a high frequency of co-infection and spillover among the animals and identify viruses with the potential to infect humans or livestock. BACKGROUND: Clinical outcomes are poor if patients with acute heart failure (AHF) are discharged with residual congestion in the presence of renal dysfunction. However, there is no single indication to reflect the combined effects of the two related pathophysiological processes. We, therefore, proposed an indicator, congestion and renal index (CRI), and examined the associations between the CRI and one-year outcomes and the incremental prognostic value of CRI compared with the established scoring systems in a multicenter prospective cohort of AHF. METHODS: We enrolled AHF patients and calculated the ratio of thoracic fluid content index divided by estimated glomerular filtration rate before discharge, as CRI. Then we examined the associations between CRI and one-year outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 944 patients were included in the analysis (mean age 63.3 ± 13.8 years, 39.3% women). Compared with patients with CRI ≤ 0.59 mL/min per kΩ, those with CRI > 0.59 mL/min per kΩ had higher risks of cardiovascular death or HF hospitalization (HR = 1.56 [1.13-2.15]) and all-cause death or all-cause hospitalization (HR = 1.33 [1.01-1.74]). CRI had an incremental prognostic value compared with the established scoring system. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with AHF, CRI is independently associated with the risk of death or hospitalization within one year, and improves the risk stratification of the established risk models. Research indicates that sleep problem is a behavioral risk factor of obesity. However, few research have applied a multi-dimensional approach to investigate the relationship between sleep health and adiposity. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the associations of sleep characteristics (duration, quality) and chronotype with overweight/obesity as measured by body mass index. Data were obtained from 2014 college students from the Dali University in the Yunnan province of China in the year 2021. Sleep characteristics and chronotype were measured using self-reported questionnaires. The presence of overweight/obesity was assessed by anthropometric measurements. Multiple logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline hazard models were established to examine associations between sleep characteristics, chronotype and adiposity. After adjusting for demographic characteristics and other obesity-related behavioral risk factors, evening type was positively associated with overweight/obesity, and an L-shaped dose-effect relationship was observed between chronotype scores and the presence of overweight/obesity. However, sleep duration and quality were not associated with the presence of overweight/obesity in the logistic regression models and restrictive cubic splines models. This study indicated that Chinese college students who had the evening chronotype were more likely to be affected by overweight/obesity. We reveal state‐led anti‐corruption campaigns in China can mitigate excess executive perk consumption facilitated by firms' weak internal control environment. Our findings suggest that public governance can substitute for firm‐level governance mechanisms. Since these campaigns enhance the central government's disciplinary power over local state‐owned enterprises (SOEs), the above effects are heightened among SOEs controlled by provincial/municipal governments rather than the central government. Irrespective of political connections, non‐SOEs are also affected, indicating policy effect spillover to China's private sectors. We explore several underlining mechanisms for these effects, including Communist Party Committee governance, chief executive officer/chairperson dismissal, industry competition, and firm productivity. This article investigates how transportation networks shape firms' geographic footprint by reducing monitoring costs of distant investments. Exploiting the staggered expansions of China's passenger high-speed rail (HSR) network, we document that the amount of intercity investment between a pair of cities increases by 45% with the introduction of an HSR line connecting the cities. We enhance the causal inference by applying high-dimensional fixed effects, and focusing on city pairs that are "accidentally" connected in the network. Hotel chains shape the industry's development and competition by locating multiple business units in multiple regions. However, how chain hotels are located and regionalized is severely under-researched. A better understanding of hotel chains' location and regionalization patterns is key to the studies of the hotel industry, which has been increasingly dominated by chains. Six chains from the emerging economy hotel segment in China were selected, and their location patterns from 2004–2019 were explored through the hotspot detection method. Subsequently, a heuristic method for geographic regionalization based on machine learning was applied to explore the spatial-temporal heterogeneity in the six chains' dominant markets. The results showed that (1) hotel chains tended to form different spatial distribution patterns, although they adopted the same location strategy; (2) each chain, regardless of size, had one or more dominant market(s); and (3) most chains' location patterns remained relatively stable during the study period. Our exploratory study contributes to the literature by illustrating hotel chains' location patterns and their evolution, alongside the development and evolution of their dominant-market regions. It also offers practical contributions by recommending that chain operators develop their location patterns based on their resources and capabilities and try to foster dominant market(s) in which they are absolute leaders. Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida var. major), a cultivated fruit tree, is native and unique to China. Its fruits have high nutritional, health, and medicinal values. However, the development and ripening process of hawthorns is accompanied by dramatic changes in flavor, aroma, and bioactive phytochemicals, which are the fundamental factors that contribute to the potential health benefits and establishment of fruit quality. Therefore, an exploration of the dynamic changes in metabolites and their regulatory networks during the development of hawthorn fruits can elucidate the formation mechanisms of active substances in hawthorn fruits. In this study, we used a broad targeted metabolomics approach to identify and analyze the dynamics of metabolites in hawthorn fruits at five developmental stages. The results revealed 998 primary and secondary metabolites that were classified into 15 categories. The accumulation levels of most sugars increased during fruit development and then accelerated at the fruit ripening stage. The accumulation levels of a few organic acids (e.g., citric acid, isocitric acid, and quinic acid) continuously increased. Many organic acids exhibited significant decreasing trends. Among the 561 secondary metabolites detected, 189 were phenolic acids and 199 were flavonoids. The levels of many flavonoids were significantly reduced at later stages of fruit development; in contrast, the levels of two anthocyanins significantly increased during fruit ripening. Correlation analysis revealed that there is a certain correlation within and between primary as well as secondary metabolites during fruit development. Furthermore, the integration of metabolomic and transcriptomic data in this study revealed that changes in the expression of some differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with the accumulation of metabolites such as sugars, organic acids, and flavonoids, e.g., the upregulated expression levels of CS (citrate synthase) genes were consistent with the continued accumulation of citric acid. Overall, this study demonstrates the metabolic changes that occur during the development of hawthorn fruit, explores the molecular mechanisms that underlie metabolite changes during fruit development, and lays a strong theoretical foundation for the improvement of hawthorn fruit quality and the development of functional components. In this study, we explore the geographic variation in health-care spending and its driving factors in China, using a nationwide and claim-level sample of inpatients ensured under the urban basic medical insurance schemes in 2010. We show geographic variation in health-care spending is substantial in China and is significantly larger than Medicare spending in the US. The substantial geographic variation is primarily driven by the quantity variation. We also discuss the potential correlates of the quantity of health care at the city level. The alpine grassland ecosystem accounts for 53 % of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) area and is an important ecological protection barrier, but it is fragile and vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, continuous monitoring of grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) is necessary. Although many studies have mapped the spatial distribution of AGB for the QTP, the results vary widely due to the limited ground samples and mismatches with satellite pixel scales. This paper proposed a new algorithm using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a bridge to estimate the grassland AGB on the QTP from 2000 to 2019. The innovations were as follows: (1) in terms of ground data acquisition, spatial-scale matching among the traditional ground samples, UAV photos, and MODIS pixels was considered. A total of 906 pairs between field-harvested AGB and UAV sub-photos and 2602 sets of MODIS pixel-scale UAV data (over 37 000 UAV photos) were collected during 2015–2019. Therefore, the ground validation samples were sufficient and scale-matched. (2) In terms of model construction, the traditional quadrat scale (0.25 m 2) was successfully upscaled to the MODIS pixel scale (62 500 m 2) based on the random forest and stepwise upscaling methods. Compared with previous studies, the scale matching of independent and dependent variables was achieved, effectively reducing the impact of spatial-scale mismatch. The results showed that the correlation between the AGB values estimated by UAV and MODIS vegetation indices was higher than that between field-measured AGB and MODIS vegetation indices at the MODIS pixel scale. The multi-year validation results showed that the constructed MODIS pixel-scale AGB estimation model had good robustness, with an average R2 of 0.83 and RMSE of 34.13 g m -2. Our dataset provides an important input parameter for a comprehensive understanding of the role of the QTP under global climate change. Forecasts of numerical weather prediction models unavoidably contain errors, and it is a common practice to post-process the model output and correct the error for the proper use of the forecasts. This study develops a grid-to-multipoint (G2N) model output error correction scheme which extracts model spatial features and corrects multistation forecasts simultaneously. The model was tested for an operational high-resolution model system, the precision rapid update forecasting system (PRUFS) model, running for East China at 3 km grid intervals. The variables studied include 2 m temperature, 2 m relative humidity, and 10 m wind speed at 311 standard ground-based weather stations. The dataset for training G2N is a year of historical PRUFS model outputs and the surface observations of the same period and the assessment of the G2N performance are based on the output of two months of real-time G2N. The verification of the real-time results shows that G2N reduced RMSEs of the 2 m temperature, 2 m relative humidity, and 10 m wind speed forecast errors of the PRUFS model by 19%, 24%, and 42%, respectively. Sensitivity analysis reveals that increasing the number of the target stations for simultaneous correction helps to improve the model performance and reduces the computational cost as well indicating that enhancing the loss function with spatial regional meteorological structure is helpful. On the other hand, adequately selecting the size of influencing grid areas of the model input is also important for G2N to incorporate enough spatial features of model forecasts but not to include the information from the grids far from the correcting areas. Background: The longitudinal associations of sleep timing and time in bed (TIB) with dementia and cognitive decline in older adults are unclear. Methods: This population‐based cohort study used data from 1982 participants who were aged ≥60 years, free of dementia, and living in rural communities in western Shandong, China. At the baseline (2014) and follow‐up (2018) examinations, sleep parameters were assessed using standard questionnaires. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia was diagnosed following the DSM‐IV criteria, and the NIA‐AA criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD). Data were analyzed using restricted cubic splines, Cox proportional‐hazards models, and general linear models. Results: During the mean follow‐up of 3.7 years, dementia was diagnosed in 97 participants (68 with AD). Restricted cubic spline curves showed J‐shaped associations of sleep duration, TIB, and rise time with dementia risk, and a reverse J‐shaped association with mid‐sleep time. When sleep parameters were categorized into tertiles, the multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of incident dementia was 1.69 (95%CI 1.01–2.83) for baseline sleep duration >8 hours (vs. 7–8 h), 2.17 (1.22–3.87) for bedtime before 9 p.m. (vs. 10 p.m. or later), and 2.00 (1.23–3.24) for mid‐sleep time before 1 a.m. (vs. 1–1.5 a.m.). Early bedtime and mid‐sleep time were significantly associated with incident AD (HR range: 2.25–2.51; p < 0.05). Among individuals who were free of dementia at follow‐up, baseline long TIB, early bedtime and mid‐sleep time, early and late rise time, and prolonged TIB and advanced bedtime and mid‐sleep time from baseline to follow‐up were associated with a greater decline in MMSE score (p < 0.05). These associations with cognitive decline were statistically evident mainly among men or participants who were aged 60–74 years. Conclusions: Long TIB and early sleep timing are associated with an increased risk of dementia, and the associations with greater cognitive decline are evident only among older people aged 60–74 years and men. Methane (CH4) emissions from reservoirs have received widespread attention. The central urban area of Chongqing in the Three Gorges Reservoir area was selected as the study area in 2020. The temporal and spatial distribution of dissolved CH4 concentration and flux, key generation pathways, and influencing factors have been studied. The dissolved CH4 concentration in low-water-level period and impoundment period varied from 0.037~0.12 μmol·L−1 and 0.11~0.23 μmol·L−1, with the average values of (0.066 ± 0.0067) μmol·L−1 and (0.13 ± 0.034) μmol·L−1. The CH4 flux was (0.941 ± 0.217) μmol·m−2·h−1 in low-water-level period and (1.915 ± 0.204) μmol·m−2·h−1 in impoundment period. CH4 was produced by CO2 reduction and acetic acid fermentation, accounting for 17.95% and 82.05% of the total CH4 production, respectively. The dissolved CH4 concentration was significantly positively correlated with DO and NO3−-N, and it is opposite with dissolved inorganic carbon. The dissolved CH4 concentration in this study area is affected by water environment (33.42%), inorganic nitrogen (29.60%), organic carbon (23.88%), and inorganic carbon (13.10%), and anthropogenic influences promoted dissolved CH4 concentration. The hospitality industry has been increasingly adopting digitalization programs to improve the information technology (IT)-enabled productivity of their employees. However, due to limited resources and capabilities, small and medium-sized hotel enterprises (SMHEs) often resort to cost-effective digital technologies, resulting in an imperfect fit between IT and the organization. As a result, productivity falls short of expectations, posing a significant challenge for enterprises dealing with the resource constraints of implementing digital technologies. To address this issue, this study found a substitution effect between IT identity and the organizational fit of IT (OFI) in influencing IT-enabled productivity through a mixed-methods approach. Plant species diversity (PSD) is essential in evaluating the function and developing the management and conservation strategies of grassland. However, over a large region, an efficient and high precision method to monitor multiscale PSD (α-, β-, and γ-diversity) is lacking. In this study, we proposed and improved an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based PSD monitoring method (UAVB) and tested the feasibility, and meanwhile, explored the potential relationship between multiscale PSD and precipitation on the alpine grassland of the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), China. Our findings showed that: (1) UAVB was more representative (larger monitoring areas and more species identified with higher α- and γ-diversity) than the traditional ground-based monitoring method, though a few specific species (small in size) were difficult to identify; (2) UAVB is suitable for monitoring the multiscale PSD over a large region (the SRYR in this study), and the improvement by weighing the dominance of species improved the precision of α-diversity (higher R 2 and lower P values of the linear regressions); and (3) the species diversity indices (α- and β-diversity) increased first and then they tended to be stable with the increase of precipitation in SRYR. These findings conclude that UAVB is suitable for monitoring multiscale PSD of an alpine grassland community over a large region, which will be useful for revealing the relationship of diversity–function, and helpful for conservation and sustainable management of the alpine grassland. Previous studies reported on the association between physical activity (PA) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDS) among the Western population. However, evidence on the association between different patterns of PA and the risk of CVDS among Chinese population are limited. This study aims to evaluate the association of different PA types and the risk of CVDS in a Chinese adult population. A total of 3568 community residents were recruited from Jiangsu Province of China using a stratified multistage cluster sampling method. The latent class analysis method was employed to identify the types of PA, and the Framingham risk score (FRS) was used to estimate the risk of CVDS within 10 years. Three types of PA were identified: CLASS1 represented participants with high occupational PA and low sedentary PA (32.1% of male, 26.5% of female), ClASS2 represented those engaging in low occupational PA and high leisure-time PA (27.0% of male, 14.2% of female), and CLASS3 represented low leisure-time and high sedentary PA (40.9% of male, 59.3% of female). The average of FRS in males was higher than that in females across PA types. CLASS1 (OR = 0.694, 95%CI 0.553–0.869) and CLASS2 (OR = 0.748, 95%CI 0.573–0.976) were both found to be protective against CVDS in males; however, such associations were not statistically significant among females. Therefore, higher occupational or leisure-time PA appear to be associated with decreased risk of CVDS, while more sedentary behaviors may increase the risk of CVDS, particularly for male Chinese adults. Background: Liver transplantation surgery is often accompanied by massive blood loss and massive transfusion (MT), while MT can cause many serious complications related to high mortality. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a model that can predict the demand for MT to reduce the waste of blood resources and improve the prognosis of patients. Objective: To develop a model for predicting intraoperative massive blood transfusion in liver transplantation surgery based on machine learning algorithms. Methods: A total of 1,239 patients who underwent liver transplantation surgery in three large grade lll-A general hospitals of China from March 2014 to November 2021 were included and analyzed. A total of 1193 cases were randomly divided into the training set (70%) and test set (30%), and 46 cases were prospectively collected as a validation set. The outcome of this study was an intraoperative massive blood transfusion. A total of 27 candidate risk factors were collected, and recursive feature elimination (RFE) was used to select key features based on the Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) model. A total of ten machine learning models were built, among which the three best performing models and the traditional logistic regression (LR) method were prospectively verified in the validation set. The Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUROC) was used for model performance evaluation. The Shapley additive explanation value was applied to explain the complex ensemble learning models. Results: Fifteen key variables were screened out, including age, weight, hemoglobin, platelets, white blood cells count, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, thrombin time, direct bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein, albumin, globulin, creatinine, urea. Among all algorithms, the predictive performance of the CatBoost model (AUROC: 0.810) was the best. In the prospective validation cohort, LR performed far less well than other algorithms. Conclusion: A prediction model for massive blood transfusion in liver transplantation surgery was successfully established based on the CatBoost algorithm, and a certain degree of generalization verification is carried out in the validation set. The model may be superior to the traditional LR model and other algorithms, and it can more accurately predict the risk of massive blood transfusions and guide clinical decision-making. Purpose: To investigate the cross-sectional associations of self-reported sleep characteristics with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cardiovascular multimorbidity in older adults living in rural Eastern China. Patients and Methods: This population-based study included 4618 participants (age ≥ 65 years; 56.5% women) living in rural Eastern China. In March–September 2018, data were collected through interviews, clinical examinations, neuropsychological testing, and laboratory tests. Sleep parameters were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Score, and Berlin questionnaire. Coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), and stroke were defined according to in-person interviews, clinical and neurological examinations, and electrocardiogram examination. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression. Results: CHD was diagnosed in 991 participants, HF in 135 participants, and stroke in 696 participants. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of CHD was 1.27 (95% CI, 1.09– 1.49) for sleep duration ≤ 6 hours/night (vs > 6– 8 hours/night), 1.40 (1.20– 1.62) for poor sleep quality, and 1.22 (1.04– 1.43) for high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The OR of HF was 2.16 (1.38– 3.39) for sleep duration > 8 hours/night, and 1.76 (1.22– 2.54) for high risk for OSA. In addition, the OR of stroke was 1.23 (1.04– 1.46) for poor sleep quality, 1.32 (1.01– 1.72) for excessive daytime sleepiness, and 1.42 (1.19– 1.70) for high risk for OSA. The associations of poor sleep with cardiovascular multimorbidity (≥ 2 CVDs) were stronger than that of sleep problems with a single CVD. Patulin (PAT) is a mycotoxin, with several acute, chronic, and cellular level toxic effects, produced by various fungi. A limit for PAT in food of has been set by authorities to guarantee food safety. Research on PAT in tea has been very limited although tea is the second largest beverage in the world. In this paper, HPLC−DAD and GC−MS methods for analysis of PAT in different tea products, such as non-fermented (green tea), partially fermented (oolong tea, white tea, yellow tea), completely fermented (black tea), and post-fermented (dark tea and Pu-erh tea) teas were developed. The methods showed good selectivity with regard to tea pigments and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and a recovery of 90–102% for PAT at a 10–100 ppb spiking level. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) in tea were 1.5 ng/g and 5.0 ng/g for HPLC−UV, and 0.25 ng/g and 0.83 ng/g for GC−MS. HPLC was simpler and more robust, while GC−MS showed higher sensitivity and selectivity. GC−MS was used to validate the HPLC−UV method and prove its accuracy. The PAT content of 219 Chinese tea samples was investigated. Most tea samples contained less than 10 ng/g, ten more than 10 ng/g and two more than 50 ng/g. The results imply that tea products in China are safe with regard to their PAT content. Even an extreme daily consumption of 25 g of the tea with the highest PAT content (124 ng/g), translates to an intake of only 3 μg/person/day, which is still an order of magnitude below the maximum allowed daily intake of 30 µg for an adult. • Patchiness caused significant reduction of SOC and TN stocks. • Reduced vegetation input and increased erosion output accounted for SOC and TN loss. • Grasslands with high patchiness had a great potential for C and N sequestration. Patchiness acts as an indicator of terrestrial ecosystem degradation and can lead to considerable loss of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen. However, quantitative assessments of the effects of patchiness on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks and their associated mechanisms remain limited. This study aimed to explore the influence mechanisms of patchiness on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks and to project the quantitative contribution of the further expansion of patchiness and vegetation recovery. Soil properties, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks were investigated using a combination of field sampling and aerial photography in four grassland types, alpine meadow, alpine steppe, temperate grassland, and desert grassland, at 47 sites in northwestern China. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen densities in the bare patches were 34–54 % and 23–41 % lower, respectively, compared to the original vegetation. At the plot-scale, current soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks ranged from 30.85 to 77.80 T/ha and 3.26 to 10.19 T/ha, respectively, across grassland types; with a 10–27 % and 7–24 % potential loss of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks, respectively, from the further expansion of patchiness but a 10–50 % and 9–37 % potential increase in soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks, respectively, from vegetation recovery. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks were positively correlated with vegetation biomass, soil clay content, and precipitation (p < 0.001), whereas they were negatively correlated with patchiness (p < 0.001). In summary, patchiness reduced soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks by decreasing vegetation inputs and increasing erosion outputs, while vegetation recovery showed potential for increasing carbon and nitrogen stocks. Background: Sleep characteristics associated with dementia are poorly defined and whether their associations vary by demographics and APOE genotype among older adults are unclear.Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 4742 participants (age ≥ 65 years, 57.1% women) living in rural China. Sleep parameters were measured using the self-rated questionnaires of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Global cognitive function was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia was diagnosed following the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria, and the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Data were analysed using multiple logistic and general linear regression models.Results: Dementia was diagnosed in 173 participants (115 with AD). Multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of dementia was 1.71 (95%CI, 1.07-2.72) for sleep duration ≤4 h/night (vs. > 6-8 h/night), 0.76 (0.49-1.18) for > 4-6 h/night, 1.63 (1.05-2.55) for > 8 h/night, 1.11 (1.03-1.20) for lower sleep efficiency (per 10% decrease), and 1.85 (1.19-2.89) for excessive daytime sleepiness. Very short sleep duration (≤4 h/night), lower sleep efficiency, and excessive daytime sleepiness were significantly associated with being diagnosed with AD (multivariable-adjusted OR range = 1.12-2.07; p < 0.05). The associations of sleep problems with dementia and AD were evident mainly among young-old adults (65-74 years) or APOE ε4 carriers. Among dementia-free participants, these sleep characteristics were significantly associated with a lower MMSE score.Conclusions: Self-reported sleep problems in dementia are characterized by very short or long sleep duration, low sleep efficiency, and excessive daytime sleepiness, especially among young-old people and APOE ε4 carriers.Trial Registration: ChiCTR1800017758 (Aug 13, 2018). Although metagenomic sequencing has revealed high numbers of viruses in mosquitoes sampled globally, our understanding of how their diversity and abundance varies in time and space as well as by host species and gender remains unclear. To address this, we collected 23,109 mosquitoes over the course of 12 months from a bat-dwelling cave and a nearby village in Yunnan province, China. These samples were organized by mosquito species, mosquito gender, and sampling time for meta-transcriptomic sequencing. A total of 162 eukaryotic virus species were identified, of which 101 were novel, including representatives of seventeen RNA virus multi-family supergroups and four species of DNA virus from the families Parvoviridae, Circoviridae , and Nudiviridae. In addition, two known vector-borne viruses—Japanese encephalitis virus and Banna virus—were found. Analyses of the entire virome revealed strikingly different viral compositions and abundance levels in warmer compared to colder months, a strong host structure at the level of mosquito species, and no substantial differences between those viruses harbored by male and female mosquitoes. At the scale of individual viruses, some were found to be ubiquitous throughout the year and across four mosquito species, while most of the other viruses were season and/or host specific. Collectively, this study reveals the diversity, dynamics, and evolution of the mosquito virome at a single location and sheds new lights on the ecology of these important vector animals. This study presents new integrated stratigraphic, sedimentary, and geochronological data for Silurian to Devonian sedimentary rocks in the central North Qilian Belt (NQB), NW China. These data constrain the timing and processes involved in the Palaeozoic tectonic transition from compression to extension in the NQB. This study indicates that the Angzanggou Formation probably formed in a foreland basin setting during 439–430 Ma compression associated with the closure of the North Qilian Ocean. The terrestrial sedimentary rocks overlying the formation were most likely deposited in a superimposed basin at 409–388 Ma as a result of the post‐orogenic extension of the NQB, an event that involved initial post‐orogenic extension‐related sedimentation. Silurian–Devonian sediments were derived from multiple sources, including the NQB, Central Qilian Block (CQB), and Alxa and Dunhuang blocks. Convergence between the CQB and the Alxa Block propagated westward, leading to the scissor‐like closure of the North Qilian Ocean during the Middle to Late Silurian and the oblique docking and collision of these two blocks. This is evidenced by a lack of middle–upper Silurian sedimentary rocks in the middle and eastern NQB compared with the well‐developed and well‐preserved sedimentary strata in the western segment. Devonian retrogradation and intracontinental extension‐related magmatism in the NQB also provide evidence of long‐lived tectonic extension of the lithosphere. Combining these new data with previously published data for the NQB and the wider region suggests that the Devonian terrestrial strata were deposited in a post‐orogenic extensional setting similar to that in the North Qaidam and East Kunlun belts, indicating that the Palaeozoic large‐scale tectonic transition from compression to extension in these three belts most likely started during the Early Devonian. Tea [Camellia sinensis (L.)] plants are important economic crop in China. Chilling stress and freezing damages have seriously affected the quality of tea products that have been already regarded as the main restricting factors to industry’s development. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in resistance of abiotic stresses. An experiment was conducted in an artificial climate chamber to study the effect of NO on tea plants grown under chilling stress (−2 °C) for 0, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h. Foliar application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) at a rate of 500 μmol·L−1 was used as NO donor. The experiment contained two factors: the first was the foliar application with SNP or distilled water, and the scond one was the chilling (−2 °C) exposure time (0, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h). The effects of NO on membrane lipid peroxidation, osmotic adjustment substances, and antioxidant activity under cold stress were studied. In addition, the gene expression of CsICE1 and CsCBF1 in respond to NO addition were also investigated using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results show that foliar addition of NO (500 μmol·L−1 of SNP) reduce the relative conductivity of tea leaves, inhibits the elevated malondialdehyde content, promotes the accumulation of proline, soluble protein and sugar, and increases the superoxide dismutase, catalase activities, thereby alleviates the damage of cold stress on tea leaves. The CsICE1 expression in 500 μM SNP treatment was peaked at 24 h of low temperature stress, while it did not express at normal temperature. Therefore, the current study is considered a good scientific material in understanding how tea plants sense and defense the chilling stress and that plays an important role to improve the level of production and economic benefits. β-Thalassemia (β-thal), one of the most common form of single-gene inheritable blood diseases in the world, is highly prevalent in southern China, especially in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To update the β-thal mutation spectrum in this region, we performed hematological and genetic analyses on 888 β-thal major (β-TM), β-thal intermedia (β-TI) and β-thal carrier patients, aged 0–15 years old, from different parts of Guangxi Province. We identified 55 genotypes and 18 β-thal mutations. The codons 41/42 (–TTCT) (HBB: c.126_129delCTTT) (43.97%), codon 17 (A>T) (HBB: c.52A>T) (25.43%), −28(A>G) (HBB: c.-78A>G) (8.18%), IVS-II-654 (C>T) (HBB: c.316-197C>T) (7.85%) and codon 26 (G>A) (HBB: c.79G>A) (5.02%) were the five most common, accounting for more than 90.0%. The results of our study are providing an up-to-date β-thal mutation spectrum in the 0–15-year-old pediatric population, which will help genetic counseling and prevention of β-TM in mainland China's most endemic region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Objective: To characterize the pattern of positive conversion of interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) during infliximab therapy in China, which has a high burden of tuberculosis. Methods: Eligible patients with CD who received serial IGRA screening during infliximab therapy from January 2015 to March 2020 were retrospectively included. The positive conversion rate of IGRA and the risk of subsequent tuberculosis of the patients were analyzed. Results: A total of 128 patients with CD were included, and the median time from the initiation of IFX treatment to positive conversion or the last follow‐up test of IGRA was 43.6 weeks. At baseline 3.9% of the patients were positive for IGRA and received prophylactic anti‐tuberculosis treatment. In the other 123 patients with negative IGRA at baseline, 6.5% had IGRA positive conversion during infliximab treatment, and one (12.5%) who was exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis was diagnosed as having active tuberculosis. The conversion rate at 40 weeks, 2 years and 3 years after treatment were 10.0% (6/60), 2.2% (1/46) and 5.9% (1/17), respectively. Age, sex, history of smoking and alcohol consumption, disease severity (Crohn's disease activity index score) and immunosuppressive therapy were not significantly associated with latent tuberculosis test conversion. Conclusions: Positive conversion of IGRA occurs early during treatment with infliximab for CD and the monitoring frequency of IGRA should be appropriately increased at the early stage of treatment. Purpose: This study aims to examine the evolution of spatial–temporal patterns in China's hotel industry from 1978 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach: A database comprising over 140,000 hotels with more than 30 rooms was created. The exploratory spatial–temporal data analysis (ESTDA) method, based on space–time cube model, was used to explore and visualize the spatial–temporal pattern of hotels. Findings: The Chinese hotel industry can be divided into two development stages, namely, a large hotel-dominant stage before 2000 and a small–medium-sized hotel-dominant stage after 2000. China's prefecture-level cities were clustered into four tiers. The higher the tier, the earlier the city will initiate hotel development. The Chinese hotel industry has four continuous hotspots (the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Bohai Rim and Sichuan and Chongqing) and some temporary hotspots. Research limitations/implications: This study lacks quantitative investigation, which could show the underlying mechanism of the evolution of the Chinese hotel industry. Originality/value: This study is the first to investigate China's hotel evolution over 40 years by applying big data and the ESTDA method. The systematic and evolutionary exploration will enable hotel researchers to understand the spatial–temporal nature of hotel distribution better. Introducing the ESTDA method into tourism and hotel research also provides an additional tool to researchers. Polygonatum is the largest genus of tribe Polygonateae (Asparagaceae) and is widely distributed in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, especially well diversified in southwestern China to northeastern Asia. Phylogenetic relationships of many species are still controversial. Hence it is necessary to clarify their phylogenetic relationships and infer possible reticulate relationships for the genus. In this study, genome-wide data of 43 species from Polygonatum and its closely related taxa were obtained by Hyb-Seq sequencing. The phylogenetic trees constructed from genome-wide nuclear and chloroplast sequences strongly supported the monophyly of Polygonatum with division into three major clades. A high level of incongruence was detected between nuclear and chloroplast trees as well as among gene trees within the genus, but all occurred within each major clade. However, introgression tests and reticulate evolution analyses revealed low level of gene flow and weak introgression events in the genus, suggesting hybridization and introgression were not dominant during the evolutionary diversification of Polygonatum in the Northern Hemisphere. Background: The prevalence of human brucellosis in Qinghai Province of China has been increasing rapidly, with confirmed cases distributed across 31 counties. However, the epidemiology of brucellosis transmission has not been fully elucidated. To characterize the infecting strains isolated from humans, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based approaches were employed. Methods: Strains were isolated from two males blood cultures that were confirmed Brucella melitensis positive following biotyping and MLVA. Genomic DNA was extracted from these two strains, and whole-genome sequencing was performed. Next, SNP-based phylogenetic analysis was performed to compare the two strains to 94 B. melitensis strains (complete genome and draft genome) retrieved from online databases. Results: The two Brucella isolates were identified as B. melitensis biovar 3 (QH2019001 and QH2019005) following conventional biotyping and were found to have differences in their variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) using MLVA-16. Phylogenetic examination assigned the 96 strains to five genotype groups, with QH2019001 and QH2019005 assigned to the same group, but different subgroups. Moreover, the QH2019005 strain was assigned to a new subgenotype, IIj, within genotype II. These findings were then combined to determine the geographic origin of the two Brucella strains. Conclusions: Utilizing a whole-genome SNP-based approach enabled differences between the two B. melitensis strains to be more clearly resolved, and facilitated the elucidation of their different evolutionary histories. Background: The effect of high levels of physical activity and relationship between daily total physical activity and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among hypertensive people were not clear. This study aimed to explore the optimum level of physical activity for CVD prevention.Methods: Data used in the present study was derived from the sub-study of China Kadoorie Biobank study (CKB) in Jiangsu province of China. The CKB was a prospective cohort study established during 2004-2008. At baseline, 53,259 participants aged 35-74 years were recruited for the CKB Jiangsu sub-study conducted in Wuzhong district of Suzhou City. Among those 53,259 participants, the 20,179 hypertensive individuals were our study population. The outcome events were cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), while the independent variable was total daily physical activity. The Cox proportional hazard models were introduced to investigate the association between total physical activity and CVDs, reporting as hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Results: During a 10.1-year follow-up, 2419 CVD cases were identified. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, compared with participants at the lowest level of daily total physical activity, the hazard ratios for CVDs were 0.87 (95%CI: 0.79-0.97), 0.73 (95%CI: 0.65-0.83) and 0.75 (95%CI: 0.65-0.85) for participants within 2, 3 and 4 quartiles of physical activity. Such a negative association between total physical activity and CVDs were also observed among participants by gender and age-group, but within patients with stage 1 hypertension only. Moreover, the association of physical activity with CVDs was U-shape and the lowest HR (0.63, 95%CI: 0.54-0.74) was observed at 35.4 MET-h/d of total physical activity.Conclusions: Total daily physical activity was negatively associated with CVDs among hypertensive adults in China, and this association was U-shape. It has some public health implications that community-based total physical activity intervention campaigns can be of help for CVDs prevention among hypertensive people in China. Objective: To assess whether group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) delivered by general practitioners reduces anxiety and depression and improves glycaemic levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: We conducted a community‐based cluster randomized controlled trial in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus from 48 communities in China. Participants received either GCBT plus usual care (UC) or UC only. General practitioners were trained in GCBT before intervention in the intervention group. The primary outcome was glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) concentration. Outcome data were collected from all participants at baseline, 2 months, 6 months and 1 year. The secondary outcomes were depression (Patient Health Questionnaire‐9; PHQ‐9) and anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder questionnaire; GAD‐7). Results: The GCBT group showed greater improvement in GAD‐7 and PHQ‐9 scores, respectively, than the UC group after 2 months post‐baseline (T = −6.46, p < 0.0001; T = −5.29, p < 0.001), 6 months (T = −4.58, p < 0.001; T = −4.37, p < 0.001) and 1 year post‐intervention (T = −3.91, p < 0.001; T = −3.57, p < 0.001). There was no difference in HbA1c values between the GCBT and UC groups at 2 months while the values were lower in the GCBT group at 6 months and 1 year (T = −6.83, p < 0.001; T = −4.93, p < 0.001, respectively). Subgroup analysis indicated a long‐term effect of GCBT only for mild and moderate anxiety and mild depression groups. The purpose of this study is to examine how organizational error management culture impacts organizational performance, management-team performance, and creativity in the hospitality industry. In addition, this study examined the mediating effect of management-team learning behavior between error management culture and outcomes. Data were collected from general managers of 148 hotels in China using survey questionnaires. Results indicated that general managers' perceptions of organizational error management culture had a significant impact on all outcome variables. Aims The conifer litter is fairly recalcitrant and nutrient poor, and broadleaved litter promotes coniferous litter decomposition by increasing degradable nutrients and promoting microbial metabolism. Mixing Pinus massoniana litter and three broadleaved litters may increase the diversity and abundance of fungal decomposers compared with those in P. massoniana litter and vary depending on the number and proportion of broadleaved species included. Methods We analysed the composition and diversity of fungal communities during mixed litter decomposition in southwestern China with 35 treatments (P. massoniana , Toona sinensis , Cinnamomum camphora and Sassafras tzumu litter) using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. Important Findings The mixed litters increased fungal diversity and richness compared with those in the single-species litter, except in the following treatments: P. massoniana litter accounting for 70%–80% in the P. massoniana + T. sinensis , P. massoniana + S. tzumu + T. sinensis and P. massoniana + S. tzumu + C. camphora combinations, and P. massoniana + S. tzumu + C. camphora + T. sinensis combination with small proportion of T. sinensis litter. The diversity and richness of the 7:1:2 combination of P. massoniana + C. camphora + T. sinensis were significantly higher than those in the other treatments. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant phyla, and Aspergillus was the most abundant genus. The decomposition of litters from one needleleaf and one broadleaved species (6:4) and one needleleaf species and two broadleaved species (broadleaved litter accounting for 30%–40%) exhibited synergistic interactions throughout the decomposition process, and the relative abundance of fungi that decompose refractory substances increased. The P. massoniana + C. camphora + T. sinensis combination and a 30%–40% broadleaf litter proportion increased fungal diversity and accelerated the decomposition of recalcitrant coniferous litter. We aimed to assess the features of notifiable infectious diseases found commonly in foreign nationals in China between 2004 and 2017 to improve public health policy and responses for infectious diseases. We performed a descriptive study of notifiable infectious diseases among foreigners reported from 2004 to 2017 in China using data from the Chinese National Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System (NNIDRIS). Demographic, temporal-spatial distribution were described and analyzed. A total of 67,939 cases of 33 different infectious diseases were reported among foreigners. These diseases were seen in 31 provinces of China and originated from 146 countries of the world. The infectious diseases with the highest incidence number were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) of 18,713 cases, hepatitis B (6,461 cases), hand, foot, and mouth disease (6,327 cases). Yunnan province had the highest number of notifiable infectious diseases in foreigners. There were different trends of the major infectious diseases among foreign cases seen in China and varied among provinces. This is the first description of the epidemiological characteristic of notifiable infectious diseases among foreigners in China from 2004 to 2017. Future trends in air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for China are of great concern to the community. A set of global scenarios regarding future socio-economic and climate developments, combining shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) with climate forcing outcomes as described by the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), was created by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Chinese researchers have also developed various emission scenarios by considering detailed local environmental and climate policies. However, a comprehensive scenario set connecting SSP–RCP scenarios with local policies and representing dynamic emission changes under local policies is still missing. In this work, to fill this gap, we developed a dynamic projection model, the Dynamic Projection model for Emissions in China (DPEC), to explore China's future anthropogenic emission pathways. The DPEC is designed to integrate the energy system model, emission inventory model, dynamic projection model, and parameterized scheme of Chinese policies. The model contains two main modules, an energy-model-driven activity rate projection module and a sector-based emission projection module. The activity rate projection module provides the standardized and unified future energy scenarios after reorganizing and refining the outputs from the energy system model. Here we use a new China-focused version of the Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM-China) to project future energy demand and supply in China under different SSP–RCP scenarios at the provincial level. The emission projection module links a bottom-up emission inventory model, the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC), to GCAM-China and accurately tracks the evolution of future combustion and production technologies and control measures under different environmental policies. We developed technology-based turnover models for several key emitting sectors (e.g. coal-fired power plants, key industries, and on-road transportation sectors), which can simulate the dynamic changes in the unit/vehicle fleet turnover process by tracking the lifespan of each unit/vehicle on an annual basis. With the integrated modelling framework, we connected five SSP scenarios (SSP1–5), five RCP scenarios (RCP8.5, 7.0, 6.0, 4.5, and 2.6), and three pollution control scenarios (business as usual, BAU; enhanced control policy, ECP; and best health effect, BHE) to produce six combined emission scenarios. With those scenarios, we presented a wide range of China's future emissions to 2050 under different development and policy pathways. We found that, with a combination of strong low-carbon policy and air pollution control policy (i.e. SSP1-26-BHE scenario), emissions of major air pollutants (i.e. SO2 , NOx , PM 2.5 , and non-methane volatile organic compounds – NMVOCs) in China will be reduced by 34 %–66 % in 2030 and 58 %–87 % in 2050 compared to 2015. End-of-pipe control measures are more effective for reducing air pollutant emissions before 2030, while low-carbon policy will play a more important role in continuous emission reduction until 2050. In contrast, China's emissions will remain at a high level until 2050 under a reference scenario without active actions (i.e. SSP3-70-BAU). Compared to similar scenarios set from the CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6), our estimates of emission ranges are much lower than the estimates from the harmonized CMIP6 emissions dataset in 2020–2030, but their emission ranges become similar in the year 2050. Purpose: This paper aims to illustrate the logics that have shifted in the Chinese hotel industry since 1949 and discuss its implications for advance a better understanding of how and why the Chinese hotel industry has evolved into its present situation. The logic evolution and future trends in this market were also discussed. Design/methodology/approach: As this research is aimed at answering the "how" and "why" aspects in the evolution of Chinese hotel industry, qualitative approach is applied to answer the questions. Findings: This paper divided the history of contemporary Chinese hotel industry into three stages: 1949-1977, 1978-2001 and 2002 to the present. Hotel business in each period was dominated by state logic, profession logic and market/corporation logic, respectively. Echinochloa crus-galli is a major weed in rice fields in China, and quinclorac has been long used for its control. Over-reliance of quinclorac has resulted in quinclorac resistance in E. crus-galli. Two resistant (R) E. crus-galli populations from Hunan, China were confirmed to be at least 78-fold more resistant to quinclorac than the susceptible (S) population. No difference in foliar uptake of 14C-labelled quinclorac was detected between the R and S plants. However, a higher level of 14C translocation and a lower level of quinclorac metabolism were found in the R plants. Basal and induced expression levels of β-cyanoalanine synthase (β-CAS) gene and β-CAS activity were not significantly different between the R and S plants. However, the induction expression of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO1) gene by quinclorac treatment was evident in the S plants but not in the R plants. Quinclorac resistance in the two resistant E. crus-galli populations was not likely to be related to foliar uptake, translocation or metabolism of quinclorac, nor to cyanide detoxification via β-CAS. Objectives. AQP7 and AQP9 represent glycerol channel in adipose tissue and liver and have been associated with metabolic diseases. We aimed to investigate the associations between genetic variants in AQP7 and AQP9 genes and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Chinese population. Methods. Blood samples were drawn from 400 T2DM patients and 400 age- and gender-matched controls. Genomic DNA was extracted by proteinase K digestion and phenol–chloroform extraction. Genotyping of 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in AQP7 (rs2989924, rs3758269, and rs62542743) and AQP9 (rs57139208, rs16939881) was performed by the polymerase chain reaction assay with TaqMan probes. Results. The subjects with rs2989924 GA+AA genotypes had 1.47-fold increased risk of T2DM (odds ratio [OR] 1.47, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-2.04), compared to those with GG genotype, and this association remained significant after adjustment for covariates (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.07-2.57). When compared with rs3758269 CC genotype, the subjects with CT+TT genotypes had 45% decreased T2DM risk after multivariate adjustment (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.35-0.85). The associations were evident in elder and overweight subjects and those with central obesity. No association was observed between AQP9 SNPs and T2DM risk. Conclusions. The plant Artemisia annua produces the anti-malarial compound artemisinin. Although the transcriptional regulation of artemisinin biosynthesis has been extensively studied, its post-translational regulatory mechanisms, especially that of protein phosphorylation, remain unknown. Here, we report that an ABA-responsive kinase (AaAPK1), a member of the SnRK2 family, is involved in regulating artemisinin biosynthesis. The physical interaction of AaAPK1 with AabZIP1 was confirmed by multiple assays, including yeast two-hybrid, bimolecular fluorescence complementation, and pull-down. AaAPK1, mainly expressed in flower buds and leaves, could be induced by ABA, drought, and NaCl treatments. Phos-tag mobility shift assays indicated that AaAPK1 phosphorylated both itself and AabZIP1. As a result, the phosphorylated AaAPK1 significantly enhanced the transactivational activity of AabZIP1 on the artemisinin biosynthesis genes. Substituting the Ser37 with Ala37 of AabZIP1 significantly suppressed its phosphorylation, which inhibited the transactivational activity of AabZIP1. Consistent overexpression of AaAPK1 significantly increased the production of artemisinin, as well as the expression levels of the artemisinin biosynthesis genes. Our study opens a window into the regulatory network underlying artemisinin biosynthesis at the post-translational level. This paper investigates the impact of air pollution on people's interest in emigration. Using an online search index on 'emigration' which is positively correlated with its search volume, we develop a city-by-day measurement of people's emigration sentiment. We find that searches on 'emigration' will grow by approximately 2.3-4.8% the next day if today's air quality index (AQI) is increased by 100 points. In addition, such an effect is more pronounced when the AQI level is above 200, a sign of 'heavily polluted' and 'severely polluted' days. Objective To develop a risk model for predicting later development of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in Chinese people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate its performance with independent validation. Methods We used data collected from the project ‘Comprehensive Research on the Prevention and Control of Diabetes’, which was a community-based study conducted by the Jiangsu Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2013. A total of 11,771 eligible participants were included in our study. The endpoint was a clear diagnosis of DN. Data was divided into two components: a training set for model development and a test set for validation. The Cox proportional hazard regression was used for survival analysis in men and women. The model's performance was evaluated by discrimination and calibration. Results The incidence (cases per 10,000 person-years) of DN was 9.95 (95% CI ; 8.66-11.43) in women and 11.28 (95% CI ; 9.77-13.03) in men. Factors including diagnosis age, location, body mass index, high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, hypertension, dyslipidemia, retinopathy, diet control, and physical activity were significant in the final model. The model showed high discrimination and good calibration. Background: The common cold is a common and frequent respiratory disease mainly caused by viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. Chinese herbal medicine has been increasingly prescribed to treat the common cold; however, there is a lack of evidence to support the wide utility of this regimen. This protocol describes an ongoing phase II randomized controlled clinical trial, based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with the objective of evaluating the efficacy and safety of Lian-Ju-Gan-Mao capsules (LJGMC), a Chinese patent medicine, compared with placebo in patients suffering from the common cold with wind-heat syndrome (CCWHS).Methods/design: This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II clinical trial. A total of 240 patients will be recruited and randomly assigned to a high-dose group, medium-dose group, low-dose group, and placebo-matched group in a 1:1:1:1 ratio. The treatment course is 3 consecutive days, with a 5-day follow-up. The primary outcome is time to all symptoms' clearance. Secondary outcomes include time to the disappearance of primary symptoms and each secondary symptom, time to fever relief, time to fever clearance, and change in TCM symptom and sign scores.Discussion: This trial is a well-designed study according to principles and regulations issued by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). The results will provide high-quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of LJGMC in treating CCWHS and help to optimize the dose for the next phase III clinical trial.
