The weekend effect, i.e., the concentration of air pollutants is different from weekends to weekdays, has been explored since the 1970 s. In most studies, the weekend effect is referred to the change of O 3 , i.e., lower emission of NO x on weekends leads to a higher concentration of O 3 . Determining whether it is true can provide insight into the strategy of air pollution controlling. In this study, we explore the weekly cycle of cities of China based on the weekly cycle anomaly (WCA), which is proposed in this paper. The advantage of using WCA is that we can avoid the influence of other change components such as the daily cycle and the seasonal cycle. The p values of the significant tests from all cities are analyzed for obtaining a whole picture of the weekly cycle of air pollution. The result shows that the concept of the weekend effect is not proper for cities in China, as many cities reach the valley phase of the emission on weekdays but not weekends. Thus, researches should not pre-assume that the weekend is the low emission scenario. We focus on the anomaly of O 3 on the peak and the valley of the emission scenario estimated by the NO 2 concentration. Through the analysis of the distribution of the p values of all cities, we show that almost all cities in China have weekly cycle of O 3 corresponding to the weekly cycle emission of NO x , i.e., O 3 of the peak time of NO 2 is less than valley time. The cities of the strong weekly cycle are located in four regions, i.e., the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei region, the Shandong Peninsula Delta, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta, and these regions are also the regions with relatively severe pollution levels. The effects of the moon on mental activities remain contentious. Few studies have investigated associations between lunar phases and different types of bipolar disorder (BD) episodes. In the current study, 7,452 patients with BD from three hospitals were enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups on the basis of episode types, and the effects of lunar phase were examined for each type. The cosinor analysis revealed moon-related rhythmicity in admissions for BD in a period of 14.75 days. There were fewer admissions around the new moon and the full moon. There was no significant difference between different groups in acrophase. There was possibly a temporal lag between the onset of BD and hospitalization. Thus, it is too early to draw firm conclusions about the impact of lunar phases on BD. Sleep might be a middle way from moon effect to admissions of BD. Background: The present study aimed to investigate the function of miR‐3529‐3p in lung adenocarcinoma and MnO2‐SiO2‐APTES (MSA) as a promising multifunctional delivery agent for lung adenocarcinoma therapy. Methods: Expression levels of miR‐3529‐3p were evaluated in lung carcinoma cells and tissues by qRT‐PCR. The effects of miR‐3529‐3p on apoptosis, proliferation, metastasis and neovascularization were assessed by CCK‐8, FACS, transwell and wound healing assays, tube formation and xenografts experiments. Luciferase reporter assays, western blot, qRT‐PCR and mitochondrial complex assay were used to determine the targeting relationship between miR‐3529‐3p and hypoxia‐inducible gene domain family member 1A (HIGD1A). MSA was fabricated using MnO2 nanoflowers, and its heating curves, temperature curves, IC50, and delivery efficiency were examined. The hypoxia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was investigated by nitro reductase probing, DCFH‐DA staining and FACS. Results: MiR‐3529‐3p expression was reduced in lung carcinoma tissues and cells. Transfection of miR‐3529‐3p could promote apoptosis and suppress cell proliferation, migration and angiogenesis. As a target of miR‐3529‐3p, HIGD1A expression was downregulated, through which miR‐3529‐3p could disrupt the activities of complexes III and IV of the respiratory chain. The multifunctional nanoparticle MSA could not only efficiently deliver miR‐3529‐3p into cells, but also enhance the antitumor function of miR‐3529‐3p. The underlying mechanism may be that MSA alleviates hypoxia and has synergistic effects in cellular ROS promotion with miR‐3529‐3p. Conclusions: Our results establish the antioncogenic role of miR‐3529‐3p, and demonstrate that miR‐3529‐3p delivered by MSA has enhanced tumor suppressive effects, probably through elevating ROS production and thermogenesis. Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between chronotypes and aggression in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 755 primary and secondary school students aged 11–16 years in rural areas of Ningxia Province, China. The Chinese version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ-CV) and the Chinese version Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ-CV) were used to assess the aggressive behavior and chronotypes of the study subjects. The Kruskal-Wallis test was then used to compare the differences in aggression among adolescents with different chronotypes, and Spearman correlation analysis to determine the relationship between chronotypes and aggression. Further linear regression analysis was used to investigate the effects of chronotype, personality traits, family environment, and class environment on adolescent aggression. Results: There were significant differences in chronotypes between different age groups and different sexes. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the MEQ-CV total score was negatively correlated with the AQ-CV total score (r = -0.263) and score of each AQ-CV subscale. In Model 1, chronotypes were negatively associated with aggression when controlling for age and sex, and evening-type adolescents might be more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior (b = -0.513, 95% CI: [-0.712, -0.315], P < 0.001); in Model 2, the negative association remained after controlling for family and class environment on the basis of Model 1 (b = -0.404, 95% CI: [-0.601, -0.208], P < 0.001); and in Model 3, the negative association still existed after controlling for personality traits on the basis of Model 2 (b = -0.383, 95% CI: [-0.577, -0.190], P < 0.001). Conclusion: Compared to morning-type adolescents, evening-type adolescents were more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior. Given social expectations for MT adolescents, adolescents should be actively guided to develop a good circadian rhythm that may be more conducive to their physical and mental development. Background: Given that the combination of multiple antibodies in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is rare and its clinical significance is unclear, this study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and significance of overlapping multiple anti-neuronal antibodies in patients with AE. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics, treatment, and prognostic details of 22 patients with multiple coexisting antibodies from multiple clinical centers in China. Results: Among the 276 patients who were AE antibody-positive, 22 (7.97%) had two or more antibodies. Among the 22 patients with coexisting AE-related antibodies, 14 patients (63.63%) were combined of cell surface and intracellular antibody, and the remaining 8 patients (36.36%) were detected to be cell surface antibody positive only. The main symptoms of the 22 patients in this cohort included fever, seizures, memory impairment, cognitive decline, and sleep disorders. Five (22.73%) patients had tumors, among whom four had small-cell lung cancers, and one had mediastinal tumors. A total of 20 patients were treated with steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, and 18 showed varying degrees of symptomatic improvement after first-line immunotherapy. Three patients died of tumor progression or chemotherapy complications. Conclusion: The coexistence of multiple anti-neuronal antibodies in patients with AE may cause a superimposition and diversification of clinical manifestations. Background. Non-small-cell lung carcinoma (abbreviated as NSCLC) progresses rapidly and lacks appropriate biological markers. Recent studies have shown that long noncoding RNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT-1) has potential application value for clinically diagnosing lung carcinoma. Thus, this study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis for assessing if MALAT-1 has a relationship to NSCLC outcome. Methods. This study conducted the search of China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal, SinoMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, Web of Science, Wanfang database, and PubMed from inception to September, 1, 2021. The published article about MALAT-l expression for NSCLC patients was analyzed. We used combined hazard rates under the confidence interval of 95% for examining the relationship of MALAT-l and NSCLC.Results. In this meta-analysis, we found that 10 studies were included, and MALAT-1 expressions were distinctly related to an unfavorable overall survival (HR: 2.34 (1.65, 3.33); I2 = 76%). Considering the merger's clinical heterogeneity, for meta-analysis, we used the random-effects method. Conclusion. Overexpression of MALAT-1 showed correlations to the less effective outcome of NSCLC. MALAT-1 might be a new NSCLC prognosis marker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We conducted a survey to assess vaccination coverage, vaccination willingness, and variables associated with vaccination hesitancy to provide evidence on coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination strategies. Methods: This anonymous questionnaire study conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional survey of outpatients and inpatients with epilepsy (PWE) registered in epilepsy clinics, in 2021, in 10 hospitals in seven cities of Shandong Province. Results: A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, and 557 valid questionnaires were returned. A total of 130 people were vaccinated against COVID-19. Among 427 unvaccinated participants, 69.32% (296/427) were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the future, and the remaining 30.68% (131/427) were unwilling to receive vaccination. Most (89.9%) of the participants believed that the role of vaccination was crucial in response to the spread of COVID-19. A significant association was found between willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and the following variables: age, marital status, level of education, occupation, residence, seizure type, and seizure control after antiepileptic drug therapy. It is noteworthy that education level, living in urban areas, and seizure freedom were significantly related to willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccination. Conclusions: Vaccination is a key measure for the prevention and control of COVID-19, and most PWE are willing to be vaccinated. Bilateral breast cancer (BBC) is an uncommon subset of breast cancer (BC), and it may present as synchronous bilateral breast cancer (sBBC) or metachronous bilateral breast cancer (mBBC). Through this study, we aimed to evaluate the proportion of BBC in BC and compare the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of sBBC and mBBC at an academic cancer center in China. Patients with BC consecutively treated between 2006 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with BBC were included. In total, 3924 patients with BC were analyzed and 127 patients with BBC (28 sBBC, 99 mBBC) with a median follow‐up of 98 months were identified. The proportion of BBC was 3.2% (0.7%, sBBC; 2.5%, mBBC). The median age at the first diagnosis of mBBC was significantly younger than that at the first diagnosis of sBBC (p = 0.027). Patients diagnosed as having sBBC were more likely to have a positive family history (p = 0.047). The first tumors of mBBC were detected at a significantly earlier tumor stage compared with those of sBBC (p = 0.028). The concordance rates of histopathologic type in the first and second tumors were 60.7% and 58.0% in sBBC and mBBC, respectively. sBBC had a significantly poorer disease‐free survival than mBBC did (p = 0.001). BBC is a rare disease affecting the Chinese population. sBBC is associated with a greater prevalence of a family history of breast cancer and poorer prognosis, compared with mBBC. Objective: This study aimed to investigate epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations, and long-term outcomes of patients with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) in the east of China. Methods: From January 2015 to December 2019, 226 potential AE patients were recruited from five clinical centers, and a total of 185 patients who met the diagnostic criteria were included in the study. We retrospectively reviewed clinical features, auxiliary examinations, details of treatments, and outcomes of AE, and identified risk factors of poor prognosis. Modified Rankin Scale scores were used to evaluate neurological function, and scores of 3–6 indicated a poor-prognosis. Results: Patients with five main subtypes of AE were enrolled in the study, as follows: anti-NMDAR (79), anti-LGI1 (55), anti-CASPR2 (30), anti-GABABR (16), and anti-AMPAR (5). Among 185 patients, 58.38% (108/185) were male and 41.62% (77/185) were female. The median age at disease onset was 41 years (interquartile range, 17–62). The most common clinical manifestations of AE were seizures (146, 78.92%) and memory deficit (123, 66.49%). A total of 95 (51.35%) patients had abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging results. Electroencephalographic findings were abnormal in 131 (70.81%) patients, and 168 (90.81%) and 26 (14.05%) patients were treated with first- and second-line immunotherapies, respectively. All surviving patients were followed-up for at least 1 year (range 12–36 months). Good clinical outcomes were achieved in 117 (63.24%), while 68 (36.76%) patients had a poor prognosis. Further, 33 (17.84%) patients relapsed and 10 (5.41%) died within 1 year post-discharge. Older patients tended to have a poorer prognosis, and the occurrence of mental behavioral disorders, movement disorders, disturbance of consciousness, central hypoventilation, and tumors were overrepresented in the poor-prognosis group. Conclusions: AE is a treatable disease, and most patients have a good prognosis. There are differences in the clinical manifestations of patients with different AE subtypes. Wenchang chicken, a prized local breed in Hainan Province of China renowned for its exceptional adaptability to tropical environments and good meat quality, is deeply favored by the public. However, an insufficient understanding of its population architecture and the unclear genetic basis that governs its typical attributes have posed challenges in the protection and breeding of this precious breed. To address these gaps, we conducted whole-genome resequencing on 200 Wenchang chicken samples derived from 10 distinct strains, and we gathered data on an array of 21 phenotype traits. Population genomics analysis unveiled distinctive population structures in Wenchang chickens, primarily attributed to strong artificial selection for different feather colors. Selection sweep analysis identified a group of candidate genes, including PCDH9, DPF3, CDIN1 , and SUGCT , closely linked to adaptations that enhance resilience in tropical island habitats. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) highlighted potential candidate genes associated with diverse feather color traits, encompassing TYR, RAB38, TRPM1, GABARAPL2, CDH1, ZMIZ1, LYST, MC1R , and SASH1. Through the comprehensive analysis of high-quality genomic and phenotypic data across diverse Wenchang chicken resource groups, this study unveils the intricate genetic backgrounds and population structures of Wenchang chickens. Additionally, it identifies multiple candidate genes linked to environmental adaptation, feather color variations, and production traits. These insights not only provide genetic reference for the purification and breeding of Wenchang chickens but also broaden our understanding of the genetic basis of phenotypic diversity in chickens. Three species of Scheffersomyces were identified during a diversity study of yeasts. All three are associated with insects and rotting wood in China. Phylogenetic analyses of a genomic dataset combining ITS and nrLSU revealed that these new collections are distinct from known species, thus three new species are introduced i.e. S. jinghongensis, S. paraergatensis, and S. anoplophorae. In our phylogenetic analyses, Scheffersomyces jinghongensis possesses a strong independent lineage and is closely related to S. titanus. S. paraergatensis is closely related to S. ergatensis, while S. anoplophorae is related to S. stambukii. Several differences in physiological traits and molecular data indicate that S. jinghongensis, S. paraergatensis, and S. anoplophorae are three newly identified species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation restoration has been widely implemented as an effective approach to the control of soil erosion. However, severe soil desiccation is likely to occur if vegetation types and local precipitation conditions are not accounted for. In this study, an abandoned farmland and three typical vegetation types, including a natural shrubland, a plantation of black locust, and a natural oak secondary forest, were investigated to determine the characteristics of soil moisture in different hydrological years. The responses of soil moisture to precipitation were analysed at different timescales. Higher soil water contents were observed either in wet years or for natural vegetation types. The temporal response of soil moisture to precipitation was largely dependent on the timescale. At monthly scale, shallow soil moisture (0–100 cm) varied consistently with precipitation, whereas on interannual scale, precipitation is positively related to soil moisture along the whole profiles. Black locust and oak lands consumed more soil moisture than the shrubland, and severe soil desiccation developed in deep soil layers in the black locust plantation. The shrubland showed steeper regression slopes than other types for both the changes in soil water storage over time (ΔSWSt) versus the growing season precipitation and the difference in soil water storage with the abandoned farmland (ΔSWSv) versus the growing season precipitation, suggesting its higher adaptability to precipitation changes in this region. The results indicate that the shrubland develops optimal water use strategies through coevolution with local conditions and should be given precedence in vegetation restoration initiatives in this region. Objective: Findings on the effect of the lunar cycle on mental illness are conflicting. We investigated the association between the lunar cycle and a number of psychiatric presentations of schizophrenia and determined which subtypes were susceptible to lunar phases. Methods: We evaluated 13,067 patients admitted to Zhumadian Psychiatric Hospital between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017 (73 lunar cycles). Patients were retrospectively assigned to lunar phase based on their admission date: new moon +/− 1 day, first quarter +/− 1 day, full moon +/− 1 day, and third quarter +/− 1 day. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10), was used for diagnosis. We used a Chi-squared goodness of fit test to evaluate the distribution of admissions across the lunar phase and R*C Chi-squared tests to compare age, sex, birth season, and clinical subtype distributions by phase. We used multiple logistic regression to further identify the relationship between clinical subtype and lunar phase. Results: Psychiatric admissions for schizophrenia varied significantly across the lunar cycle (χ2 = 36.400, p<.0001), peaking in the first quarter, followed by the full moon, and lowest at the new moon. Using unspecified schizophrenia (F20.9) as reference, people with paranoid schizophrenia (F20.0) were more likely to be admitted in the full moon than in other phases (odds ratio: 1.157, 95% confidence interval: 1.040–1.286) (p <.05); other subtypes showed no admission differences during the four lunar phases (p >.05). Conclusions: Psychiatric admissions for schizophrenia show lunar periodicities. People with schizophrenia tend to be stable in the new moon, but their condition is easily aggravated during the first quarter and full moon. Background: Over the past decades there have been outbreaks of mumps in many countries, even in populations that were vaccinated. Some studies suggest that the incidence of mumps is related to meteorological changes, but the results of these studies vary in different regions. To date there is no reported study on correlations between mumps incidence and meteorological parameters in Beijing, China.Methods: A time series analysis incorporating selected weather factors and the number of mumps cases from 1990 to 2012 in Beijing was performed. First, correlations between meteorological variables and the number of mumps cases were assessed. A seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model with explanatory variables (SARIMAX) was then constructed to predict mumps cases.Results: Mean temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, vapor pressure, and wind speed were significantly associated with mumps incidence. After constructing the SARIMAX model, mean temperature at lag 0 (β = 0.016, p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval 0.001 to 0.032) was positively associated with mumps incidence, while vapor pressure at lag 2 (β = -0.018, p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval -0.038 to -0.002) was negatively associated. SARIMAX (1, 1, 1) (0, 1, 1)12 with temperature at lag 0 was the best predictive construct.Conclusions: The incidence of mumps in Beijing from 1990 to 2012 was significantly correlated with meteorological variables. Antecedent anomalies of sea surface temperature and atmospheric circulation are important signals for making long-term streamflow forecasts. In this study, four groups of ocean-atmospheric indices, i.e, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation, the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation (SAC), and the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean SST (WPI), are evaluated for forecasting summer streamflow of the Yangtze River. The gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) is used to forecast streamflow based on each group of indices. The score based on receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves, i.e., area under the ROC curve (AUC), is used to evaluate skills of models for identifying the high category and the low category of summer streamflow. It is found that the ENSO group and the SAC group show higher AUC values. Furthermore, both AUC values of GBRT models and individual indices show that the low flow years are easier to be identified than the high flow years. The result of this study highlights the skill from the Southern Hemisphere circulation systems for forecasting summer streamflow of the Yangtze River. Results of relative influences of predictors in GBRT models and AUC of individual indices indicate some key ocean-atmospheric indices, such as the Multivariate ENSO Index and the 500-hPa height of the east of Australia. Decentralized environmental governance theory suggests that decentralization can produce better environmental performance mainly because lower-level governments are closer to the people and environmental issues and are considered more legitimate than the national government. However, China's decentralized system of environmental governance has been often regarded as a key factor in creating pollution problems rather than in solving them. To explain this puzzle, this article, using Blame Avoidance Behaviour in government theory as a theoretical framework, examines how blame avoidance behaviour shapes China's decentralized system of environmental governance from three perspectives: first, actors and the chain of blame shaped by the hierarchical power structure among environmental policymakers and implementers; second, the strategies of discursive domination and decentralization for blaming environmental problems on local officials; and lastly, the contextual factor of “hierarchical governmental trust.” Drawing on documentary discursive analysis and extensive fieldwork, this article suggests that the dysfunction of China's decentralized environmental governance structure may in fact be an outcome of a blame-shifting game between central and local governments. The obvious paradox within China's environmental politics is the big gap between the central government's policy and its implementation outcomes at local levels. Despite concerns about implementation at the local level, much about the role of central governments in China's local environmental politics is still poorly understood. This article examines how the incentive structure set by the central authorities affects the policy implementation gap at the local level. Drawing on fieldwork and document analysis, this article argues that the incentives set by the central government regarding environmental policy implementation at local levels are perversely structured, meaning that the central government provides much more incentive for local governments' non-implementation or poor implementation of its environmental policies than it provides for full implementation. The central government's failure to encourage—politically, financially, as well as morally—local government officials to appropriately implement environmental policies can partly explain the production of the policy implementation gap at the local level. This implementation gap cannot be overcome by efforts at the local level unless the central government takes significant measures to address the perverse incentive structure embedded in the overall structure of China's local environmental politics. • Manipulated rainfall reduction lowered transpiration and growth of black locust trees. • Simulated drought weakened the response of sap flow to meteorological variables. • It showed different behavior under long or severe drought from short term drought. • The plantations in semiarid area tend to suffer from future precipitation decrease. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) plantations have been widely established in the semiarid and sub-humid areas of central China. Under the condition of global climate change, which is introducing much uncertainty of precipitation patterns in this region, it is of special significance to investigate their responses to precipitation. Here, we investigated sap flow response to reduced throughfall. Stem sap flow was measured from 2011 to 2017 using Granier-type sensors. By placing waterproof panels within tree rows, about 47.5% precipitation was excluded from treated plots since April 2015. Differences in soil water content gradually increased to 4.3% between treated and control plots with continued throughfall exclusion. Decreased precipitation input significantly reduced the average sap flux density in treated plots by 9.1%–45.3%. The extent of this reduction depended on precipitation in the previous and current years. Transpiration and forest growth were negatively affected by the treatment. Furthermore, sap flow response to environmental factors became insensitive, with the discrepancy increasing with increasing drought duration, but was regained by rainfall recharge to soil water in the first two treatment years. However, prolonged drought might damage transpiration resilience capacity, as the saturated sap flux after soil water recharging during the wet period was still lower than that in the control plot in the latter year. Predawn leaf water potential was significantly lower in the treated plot compared to the control plot, whereas midday leaf water potential was similar. Whole tree hydraulic conductance (G P) was also similar between the two plots, except in extreme drought months when G P was much lower in the treated plot. In addition, the specific leaf area and stomatal density decreased in the treated plot. Therefore, decreases in precipitation would cause a transpiration reduction, weakening the tree's response to meteorological variables and lowering growth and productivity, potentially damaging transpiration resilience. These results suggest that black locust is sensitive to water changes, its capacity of drought tolerant is restrained by the drought time scale or drought severity, the use of such species in reforestation in semiarid regions should be implemented with caution. Background: Tbx2 plays a vital role in the cardiac cushion development. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between common genetic variants in the promoter region of TBX2 gene and the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD). Methods: Blood samples of 516 CHD patients and 587 control subjects were enrolled. Sanger sequencing and SNaPshot analysis were performed for genotyping in our case–control cohort. Luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) were conducted to uncover the potential modulatory mechanism of the related variants. Results: Variant rs4455026(c.‐1028G>C) in TBX2 promoter region was found to be associated with significantly lower CHD susceptibility. The risk of CHD in C allele carriers (GC and CC genotypes) decreased by 30% compared to the wild‐type GG genotype subjects (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.55–0.89, p = 0.0038). It was revealed that G to C variation resulted in a decrease in the transcriptional activity of luciferase gene, and a potential change in binding affinity with certain nucleoproteins in EMSA data. Conclusion: The minor C allele of rs4455026 in TBX2 promoter region was related with lower CHD susceptibility in the Han Chinese population via repressing its transcriptional activity. Variant rs4455026(c.‐1028G>C) in TBX2 promoter region was found to be associated with significantly lower CHD susceptibility. The poor enforcement and effectiveness of environmental impact assessment (EIA) on construction and investment projects in China has long been blamed for not preventing environmental pollution and degradation. At the same time, freezing EIA approval of all new projects in an administrative region, introduced in 2006 as a punishment for failing to meet regional environmental quality targets, has been regarded as an innovative administrative instrument used by higher level environmental authorities on local governments. But it also raised controversies. Applying an environmental authoritarianism perspective, this study analyzed the legitimacy and environmental effectiveness of freezing EIA approval procedures by reviewing all 25 national cases and 12 provincial cases of so-called EIA Restrictions Targeting Regions between 1 December 2006 and 31 December 2013. The results show that such an environmental authoritarian measure is to some extent environmentally effective but lacks legality and transparency towards and participation of third parties, and hence falls short in legitimacy. Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is widely planted throughout semiarid and subhumid regions of the Loess Plateau of China. Determining the changes in transpiration of this species in different climatic areas is important for revealing the acclimation mechanism of black locust and developing suitable forest management practices, particularly in the context of global climate change. Here, sap flow and canopy conductance of black locust plantation trees in semiarid (Yan'an) and subhumid (Yongshou) sites were quantified using Granier-type thermal dissipation probes and concurrent environmental observations from 2012 to 2017. Several physiological parameters were measured throughout the growing season. The results showed that sap flow was correlated with phenological factors across seasons within a year. However, interannual changes in sap flow were affected mainly by the reference evapotranspiration (ET 0) at the Yongshou site, and jointly by precipitation (P), soil water content, and P / ET 0 at the Yan'an site. Sap flow response to meteorological factors showed less discrepancy between pre- and post-rainfall periods at the Yan'an site. Moreover, canopy conductance fluctuated less with a wider range of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and the slope of canopy resistance as a function of VPD was lower, indicating relatively lower sensitivity of stomatal conductance to environmental factors in Yan'an site. Physiological parameters, except for predawn leaf water potential, were significantly different between the two sites. The results suggested that black locust tended to reduce transpiration, modify leaf morphology, and improve water use efficiency to enhance its adaptability to the dryer site. Macamides are considered bioactive markers of maca, and they have been used as food and medicine for centuries. In the present study, a 1H qNMR method was developed, and the analyses of the specificity, linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, and precision further indicate the validity of this method. Furthermore, the 1H qNMR method was applied for the quantification of total macamides in five naturally air-dried maca samples with different origins and colors. The results showed that the content of total macamides was correlated with the origins and colors: China purple maca (1845.75 ± 3.45 μg g−1) > China yellow maca (1090.20 ± 2.07 μg g−1) > Peru yellow maca (393.30 ± 2.42 μg g−1) > China and Peru black maca (each 269.10 ± 1.03 μg g−1). In addition, a new macamide, N -benzyl-(9-carboxymethyl)-octanamide (2), which is the first example of a macamide with an azelaxyl motif, was identified from Chinese purple maca. Growth hormone (GH) is the most important endocrine factor to regulate somatic growth. Spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) is a famous marine aquaculture species in China with a typical sexual growth dimorphism in which females grow faster and larger than males. In this study, gh messenger RNA (gh mRNA) and GH protein expression were examined in the pituitary glands of female and male spotted scat. Based on qPCR analysis, gh mRNA was mainly expressed in the pituitary gland, and weakly in the gonads and hypothalamus. Furthermore, gh mRNA expression in the pituitary gland was significantly higher in females at stages II-IV than in males at stages III-V. In addition, gh mRNA was highly expressed in the ovary and testis during mature development stages. In this study, spotted scat GH polyclonal antibody was produced. Western blot analysis showed that the molecular weight of spotted scat GH was about 21 KDa. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) in pituitary glands showed that GH was mainly expressed in the proximal pars distal (PPD) and a few cells were distributed in the rostral pairs distal (RPD). After injecting 17β-Estradiol (E 2) in vivo , gh mRNA expression was significantly up-regulated in the pituitary gland, whereas igf1 and ghr1 mRNA levels were down-regulated in the liver, which might regulate gh mRNA expression in the pituitary gland. These results provide valuable insight into the molecular mechanisms of E 2 regulating gh expression in spotted scat. The southwest alpine canyon area is a typical ecologically fragile area. Understanding the characteristics of vegetation change here and its influencing factors can provide a theoretical basis for formulating countermeasures for ecological environment construction in the southwest alpine canyon area and has practical significance for realizing the harmonious and unified development of the regional economy, environment, and ecology. Based on the data set of NDVI, socio-economic factors, and natural factors from 2000 to 2019, the spatial and temporal variation and stability characteristics of NDVI in the southwest alpine canyon area were analyzed by using the methods of unary linear regression, Hurst index, geographic detector model, and coefficient of variation, and the influencing factors of the spatial differentiation of NDVI were also discussed. The results showed that:① in terms of spatial distribution, the vegetation was high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The area covered by medium and high vegetation accounted for 71.71%, and the vegetation cover was at a relatively high level. From the perspective of time, the area of vegetation showing an improvement trend accounted for 85.90%, and the recovery effect was obvious, and the future vegetation change trend will continue to be improved. ② Elevation, vegetation type, and soil type were the main factors affecting the spatial differentiation of NDVI, and the q value was no less than 0.40. Temperature and rainfall were secondary factors, with q values of 0.274 and 0.225, respectively. The dual-factor interaction enhanced the single factor influence, which was manifested as the dual-factor enhancement and nonlinear enhancement relationship. The highest q value was 0.714 for the combination of altitude ∩ vegetation, followed by 0.688 for the combination of altitude ∩ soil. ③ The overall stability of NDVI during the study period was good, and the proportion of the regional area with low fluctuating changes and slightly low fluctuating changes was 89.95%. The area with moderate fluctuation accounted for 10.05%, concentrated in the relatively fragile ecological environment with factors such as high altitude, low temperature, little rainfall, barren soil, and sparse vegetation. Vegetation change is the result of a combination of multiple factors, so it is necessary to adapt to local conditions and adopt different strategies to restore the ecological environment of the southwest alpine canyon area.

Two new eriophyid mite species (Acari: Prostigmata: Eriophyoidea) were described from the host plants of the genus Callerya Endl. during a field survey in China: Tetra nitidae sp. nov. vagrant on leaves ofCallerya nitida (Bentham) R. Geesink (Leguminosae),and Calepitrimerus calleryus sp. nov. vagrant on leaves ofCallerya tsui (F. P. Metcalf) Z. Wei & Pedley. Both species caused no apparent symptoms in their host plants. Additionally, this paper provides a supplementary morphological description and illustrations of Fujianacarus wisterianis Song, Xue & Hong, 2008 (Eriophyoidea).

Objective: To investigate the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 in Heilongjiang, China, and try to spot signs of new circulating recombinant form (CRF) in this region., Design: A molecular epidemiological study was conducted in Heilongjiang, China during 2011-2020., Methods: Plasma samples were collected from three HIV-1-positive patients (two MSM and one man lacking risk factor information). The near full-length genome sequences (NFLGs) of a novel CRF were then obtained and subjected to phylogenetic analysis using Mega 7.0.26. Recombination analysis was performed by the jumping profile Hidden Markov Model (jpHMM). Finally, the origin time of this novel CRF was inferred using the Bayesian phylogenetic analysis in Beast v1.10.4., Results: The three NFLGs formed a distinct monophyletic cluster in the neighbor-joining (NJ) tree. Recombination analysis revealed that the recombinant genome was composed of five segments derived from CRF01&#95;AE, subtypes B, and C, but further confirmed to be a second-generation recombinant form of CRF01&#95;AE/CRF07&#95;BC by a comparison of genome maps and subregion phylogenetic analysis and, therefore, designated as CRF136&#95;0107. Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an infectious disease that usually occurs in children under 5 years and is caused by a group of enteroviruses. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of HFMD clusters from 2016 to 2020 in Tongzhou, Beijing, and explored the genetic evolution of CV-A6. The HFMD case information came from the Information System of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the clusters information verification and on-site investigation by Tongzhou CDC. ARIMA model was applied to forecast HFMD clusters in 2020. Totally 440 HFMD clusters were reported during 2016-2020. The large peak of the clusters occurred in April-July, followed by a smaller peak in October-November during 2016-2019. However, in 2020, the two peaks disappeared. The main site of HFMD clusters was childcare facilities (65.0%) and mostly occurred in urban areas (46.1%). The detection rate of CV-A6 was the highest (36.1%), and cases with CV-A6 infection had the highest proportion of fever. The phylogenetic analysis based on CV-A6 VP1 gene showed that the predominant strains mainly located in Group F during 2016-2017, while changed into Group A during 2018-2020. HFMD clusters presented seasonality, mainly located in childcare facilities and urban areas, and CV-A6 was the major causative agent. To investigate the characteristics and source apportionment of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Dalian, the concentration level, composition characteristics, reaction activity, and source apportionment of atmospheric VOCs in Dalian were analyzed based on high-resolution online observation VOCs data from June to August 2020. The results showed that the average φ (VOCs) was (10.21±5.71)×10 -9 , in which alkanes accounted for 66.35%, alkenes for 11.89%, alkynes for 7.75%, and aromatics for 14.01%. VOCs and NO x were high at night and low during the day, whereas the change trend of O 3 was opposite. Considering the species activity, it was determined that toluene, ethylene, m/p -xylene, 1-hexene, n -butane, isopentane, n -pentane, and isoprene were the key species affecting atmospheric VOCs in Dalian. Priority control of olefin and aromatic hydrocarbon emissions is the key to improve O 3 pollution in summer in Dalian. By applying the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, six major VOCs sources were extracted, namely traffic sources (26.38%), combustion sources (22.75%), industrial emission sources (17.09%), solvent usage sources (14.59%), natural sources (11.72%), and others (7.47%). The emissions of traffic sources and combustion sources are the key pollution sources for O 3 prevention and control in Dalian in summer.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the current status of disease-related knowledge and to analyze the relationship among the general condition, illness perception, and psychological status of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)., Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 118 patients using convenience sampling. The general questionnaire, disease-related knowledge questionnaire of COVID-19, Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ), and Profile of Mood States (POMS) were used to measure the current status of participants., Results: The overall average score of the disease-related knowledge of patients with COVID-19 was (79.19 ± 14.25), the self-care situation was positively correlated with knowledge of prevention and control ( r = 0.265; P = 0.004) and total score of disease-related knowledge ( r = 0.206; P = 0.025); the degree of anxiety was negatively correlated with the knowledge of diagnosis and treatment ( r = -0.182; P = 0.049). The score of disease-related knowledge was negatively correlated with negative cognition (volatility, consequences, emotional statements) and negative emotions (tension, fatigue, depression) ( P < 0.05); positively correlated with positive cognition (disease coherence) and positive emotion (self-esteem) ( P < 0.05)., Conclusions: It was recommended that we should pay more attention to the elderly and low-income groups, and increase the knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and self-care in the future health education for patients.

Background and Objectives: Low free triiodothyronine (FT3) is usually associated with worse functional outcome in critical illness; however, the information on thyroid dysfunction and autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is limited. This study aims to evaluate the clinical prognostic value of thyroid function and low-T3 syndrome in patients with multiple subtypes of AE., Methods: In this retrospective study, we identified the hospital records of 319 candidate patients with AE admitted between January 2016 and December 2020. We then extracted the clinical features and outcomes. Modified Rankin scale (mRS) scores were used to evaluate the patients' neurological function. The serum levels of FT3, free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured upon admission. Normal thyroid stimulating hormone level with FT3 below the lower limit of the reference interval (2.63 nmol/L) was defined as low-T3 syndrome., Results: A total of 237 AE cases remained after screening. Among these, 57.81% (137/237) were men and the average age at onset was 41 y (interquartile range, 12-61 y). We found that 83.54% (198/237) of the patients had a good prognosis, and 16.46% (39/237) had a poor prognosis. Abnormal thyroid function was observed in 30.80% of these patients, with a relatively greater prevalence in the group with a poor prognosis ( p < 0.001). The serum FT3 levels in the poor-prognosis group were significantly lower than those in the good-prognosis group ( p < 0.001). Low-T3 syndrome occurred in 15.19% of AE cases and was more frequent in patients with poor prognosis (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Abnormal thyroid function in AE is frequent, and serum FT3 levels in patients with poor prognosis are significantly lower than in those with good prognosis. Kapok is the main host of Glenea cantor (Fabricius), which causes serious damage and is difficult to control. In severe cases, it often causes the kapok trees to die continuously, which seriously affects the results of urban landscaping. To provide reference for the functional research on related genes in G. cantor , we screened the stable expression of candidate reference genes at different developmental stages (i.e., eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults), in various adult tissues (i.e., head, thorax, abdomen, feet, antennae, and wings), and sexes (i.e., male pupae, female pupae, male adults, and female adults). In this study, 12 candidate reference genes (i.e., ACTINLIKE , ACTININ , TUB , RPL36 , RPL32 , RPS20 , TBP , GAPDH , 18S rRNA , EF1A1 , EF1A2 , and UBQ ) were evaluated using different adult tissues, developmental stages, and sexes. RefFinder, geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper were used to evaluate and comprehensively analyze the stability of the expression of the candidate reference genes. The results show that RPL32 and EF1A1 were the most suitable reference genes in the different adult tissues, and RPL36 and EF1A1 were best at the different developmental stages. RPL36 and EF1A2 were the best fit for the qRT-PCR reference genes in the different sexes, while RPL36 and EF1A1 were the most appropriate qRT-PCR reference genes in all samples. Results from geNorm showed that the optimal number of reference genes was two. We also surveyed the expression of cellulase at the different developmental stages and in the different adult tissues. Results further verified the reliability of the reference genes, and confirmed the best reference genes under the different experimental conditions. This study provides a useful tool for molecular biological studies on G. cantor .

Objective: This study aimed to explore the orthographic processing of simplified Chinese characters in developmental dyslexic children in Kashgar, Xinjiang, China, and provide a theoretical basis for intervention strategies for developmental dyslexia in Chinese., Methods: Using event-related potential (ERP) measures, 18 developmental dyslexic children and 23 typically developing children performed a character decision task with three types of stimuli: real characters (RCs), pseudocharacters (PCs), and noncharacters (NCs)., Results: Behavioral results showed that the control children displayed a faster and higher accurate performance than the dyslexic children across PCs and NCs. ERP data revealed that the RCs and PCs elicited a stronger P200 than the NCs. Compared with the RCs and NCs, children in the control group showed more N400 negatives for PCs. It is worth mentioning that dyslexic children did not show any difference on N400, which reflected the insufficient orthographic processing of dyslexic children in China., Conclusion: These results show that Chinese dyslexic children had orthographic processing defects., (© 2021. Objectives: Norovirus is associated with one-fifth of all gastroenteritis cases, but basic epidemiological data is lacking, especially in developing countries. As long-term surveillance on norovirus gastroenteritis is scarce in western China, this study aims to update the epidemiological knowledge of norovirus gastroenteritis and to characterize the genotypes of norovirus strains., Methods: Stool samples were collected from hospitalized children under 5 years old with gastroenteritis in Chengdu, China. All samples were tested for norovirus as well as rotavirus, sapovirus, enteric adenovirus, and astrovirus by real-time RT-PCR. RdRp and VP1 genes were sequenced in norovirus-positive samples to investigate viral phylogenies., Results: Of the 1181 samples collected from 2015 to 2019, 242 (20.5%) were positive for norovirus. Among norovirus-positive cases, 65 cases had co-infection with another virus; norovirus/enteric adenovirus was most frequently detected (50.8%, 33/65). The highest positive rate was observed in children aged 13-18 months (23.7%, 68/287). Norovirus infection peaked in autumn (36.6%, 91/249), followed by summer (20.3%, 70/345). Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlation between the norovirus-positive rate and humidity (r = 0.773, P < 0.05). GII.4 Sydney 2012 [P31] (48.5%, 79/163) and GII.3 [P12] (35.6%, 58/163) were the dominant norovirus strains., Conclusions: Norovirus has become one of the most common causes of viral gastroenteritis in children under 5 years old in western China. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for the treatment of cervical squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL)., Methods: We prospectively screened and enrolled patients with cervical SIL and persistent high-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) infection to receive ALA-PDT from March 27, 2019, to January 23, 2020, at Beijing Youan Hospital, China. The primary outcome was the remission rate of SIL and HPV. The secondary outcome was the symptom improvement and adverse events of ALA-PDT in these cases., Results: 54 patients with cervical SIL and persistent HR-HPV infection were enrolled and divided these individuals into three groups: high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) group (10 patients), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) group (33 patients), and simple HR-HPV infection group (11 patients). 49 of 54 patients finished six sessions treatment and 46 of 49 patients complete the follow-up. After six sessions' treatment, HR-HPV remission rates were 71.43 %(5/7)in the simple HR-HPV infection group, 63.64 %(14/22) in the LSIL group, and 50 %(4/8) in the HSIL group. The histology remission rates were 80 %(4/5) in the simple HR-HPV infection group, 69.57 %(16/23)in the LSIL group, and 75 % (6/8) in the HSIL group. Symptoms improvement rates in the simple HR-HPV infection, LSIL group, and HSIL group were 100 %(5/5), 66.67 %(5/15) and 71.43 %(5/7). Background: The goal of our study is to investigate whether the methylation levels of AHCY and CBS promoters are related to the risk of cerebral infarction by detecting the methylation level of AHCY and CBS genes., Methods: We extracted peripheral venous blood from 152 patients with cerebral infarction and 152 gender- and age-matched healthy controls, and determined methylation levels of AHCY and CBS promoters using quantitative methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. We used the percentage of methylation reference (PMR) to indicate gene methylation level., Results: We compared the promoter methylation levels of two genes (AHCY and CBS) in peripheral blood DNA between the cerebral infarction case group and the control group. Our study showed no significant difference in AHCY promoter methylation between case and control. Subgroup analysis by gender showed that the methylation level of AHCY in males in the case group was lower than that in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant in females. In a subgroup analysis by age, there was no significant difference in the AHCY methylation level between the case and control in the young group (≤44 years old). However, the level of AHCY gene methylation in the middle-aged group (45-59 years old) was significantly higher and the aged group (≥60 years old) was significantly lower than that in the control groups. However, CBS promoter methylation levels were significantly lower in the case group than in the control group (median PMR: 70.20% vs 104.10%, P = 3.71E-10). In addition, the CBS methylation levels of males and females in the case group were significantly lower than those in the control group (male: 64.33% vs 105%, P = 2.667E-08; female: 78.05% vs 102.8%, P = 0.003). We also found that the CBS levels in the young (23-44), middle-aged (45-59), and older (60-90) groups were significantly lower than those in the control group (young group: 69.97% vs 114.71%; P = 0.015; middle-aged group: 56.04% vs 91.71%; P = 6.744E-06; older group: 81.6% vs 119.35%; P = 2.644E-04). Our ROC curve analysis of CBS hypomethylation showed an area under the curve of 0.713, a sensitivity of 67.4%, and a specificity of 74.0%., Conclusion: Our study suggests that hypomethylation of the CBS promoter may be closely related to the risk of cerebral infarction and may be used as a non-invasive diagnostic biomarker for cerebral infarction.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, brick red-pigmented bacterium, designated R-22-1 c-1 T , was isolated from water from Baiyang Lake, Hebei Province, PR China. The strain was able to grow at 20-30 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and pH 6-7 (optimum, pH 6) in Reasoner's 2A medium. 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analyses of R-22-1 c-1 T revealed closest relationships to Rufibacter immobilis MCC P1 T (97.8 %), Rufibacter sediminis H-1 T (97.9 %) and Rufibacter glacialis MDT1-10-3 T (97.0 %), with other species of the genus Rufibacter showing less than 97.0 % sequence similarity. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids and three unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 , C 15 : 1  ω 6 c , C 17 : 1  ω 6 c , anteiso-C 15 : 0 , summed feature 3 (iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH and/or C 16 : 1  ω 7 c and/or C 16 : 1  ω 6 c ) and summed feature 4 (iso-C 17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C 17 : 1 B). The respiratory quinone was MK-7. The draft genome of R-22-1 c-1 T was 5.6 Mbp in size, with a G+C content of 50.2 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain R-22-1 c-1 T and related type strains were R. immobilis MCC P1 T (77.2 and 21.8 %), R. sediminis H-1 T (81.6 and 21.4 %) and R. tibetensis 1351 T (78.5 and 22.9 %). Based on these phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic results, strain R-22-1 c-1 T represents a novel species in the genus Rufibacter , for which the name Rufibacter latericius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R-22-1 c-1 T (=CGMCC 1.13570 T =KCTC 62781 T ).

Few studies have investigated relationships between birth season and early-onset bipolar affective disorder (BAD) in young adults. In the current study, birth season was compared in patients with early-onset BAD and in sex-matched and age-matched controls. A total of 957 patients aged <25 years of age from three hospitals in the North China Plain region were enrolled in the study. Sex-matched and age-matched control group data were collected in universities and schools via questionnaires. The R*C chi-square test was used to assess distributional differences in season of birth both in the patient and control group. A binary logistic regression model adjusted for age and sex was used to evaluate associations between season of birth and BAD. Using spring as the reference season, BAD patients showed significantly lower odds ratios of being born in any other season. There were associations between birth season and early-onset BAD, and early-onset BAD patients were more likely to have been born in spring. These data have implications for future disease prevention strategies and future research.

Five yeast strains were isolated from the gut of the groundbeetle Pterostichus gebleri and rotting wood, which were collected from two different localities in China. These strains were identified as representing two novel species of the genus Blastobotrys through comparison of sequences in the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene and other taxonomic characteristics. Blastobotrys baotianmanensis sp. nov. produces two to three spherical ascospores per ascus, and is most closely related to the type strains of B. elegans , B. capitulata , B. arbuscula , and an undescribed species represented by strain BG02-7-20-006A-3-1. Blastobotrys baotianmanensis sp. nov. differed from these strains by 3.6-8.4 % divergence (21-46 substitutions and 0-4 gaps) in the D1/D2 sequences. Blastobotrys xishuangbannaensis f.a., sp. nov. is closely related to B. nivea , B. elegans and B. aristata but the formation of ascospores was not observed on various sporulation media, and it differed from its relatives by 6.2-8.5 % divergence (34-43 substitutions and 2-6 gaps) in the D1/D2 sequences. The holotype of Blastobotrys baotianmanensis sp. nov. is NYNU 1581 and the holotype of Blastobotrys xishuangbannaensis f.a., sp. nov. is NYNU 181030.

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in China, and no therapies have proven effective to prevent it. Popular belief holds that the lunar cycle affects human physiology, behavior, and health. The aim of our study is to determine whether the lunar cycle impacts the incidence of stroke subtypes [intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke (IS)]. We retrospectively extracted the discharge registry data of all patients with first-ever acute stroke hospitalized in the affiliated hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2002-2015. The onset times of stroke were assigned to four primary lunar phases based on NASA definitions. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the association between the lunar cycle and stroke incidence with adjustment for age, sex and season. A total of 5,965 patients with stroke (4,909 admissions for ischemic stroke IS, 754 admissions for ICH, and 302 admissions for TIA) were evaluated in our study. Subgroup analysis indicated that the admission rates of different sexes for IS tended to have opposite variation during the four moon phases. More female patients were admitted during the new moon than in the first and third quarters, while fewer male patients were admitted during the new moon than in the first and third quarters (χ2 = 15.589, P = .001). Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that men were more likely to be admitted for IS in the first quarter than during the new moon (odds ratio [OR] = 1.252, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.076-1.456) ( P = .004), and a corresponding trend was also identified for the third quarter (OR = 1.235, 95% CI = 1.062-1.437) ( P = .006). No significant gender differences were shown in ICH or TIA. No sex difference is obvious during the full moon. Moon phases seem to affect both genders, but in very different ways. It seems that the new moon is a protective factor for male ischemic stroke patients and a risk factor for female ones. Woman tends to be more vulnerable than ever at the new moon, so deserves more attention and care. The mechanisms underlying this observation are worth studying further.

Introduction: Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GA-FG) is a newly described entity that is characterized by well-differentiated neoplasm with unclear etiopathogenesis., Patient Concerns: A 60-year-old Chinese man was referred to our hospital for abdominal distension., Diagnosis: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) showed a depressed lesion found using in the greater curvature of the stomach. The pathological diagnosis of the biopsy specimens indicated that the tumor was GA-FG (chief cell predominant type, GA-FG-CCP)., Interventions: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was performed. The histopathological examination of the ESD specimen revealed gastric hyperplasia of the fundic gland type around the adenocarcinoma cells., Outcomes: The surgical outcomes were good. The EGD showed a scar with no recurrence, and no symptoms were observed 1 year postoperatively during the follow-up., Conclusion: We present a rare case of a depressed lesion with a pathogenic expression suggesting gastric hyperplasia of the fundic gland type around the adenocarcinoma cells. Considering the origin of oxyntic mucosa, we consider that it may develop into GA-FG. To understand this issue better, similar cases should be monitored in the future.

This study used DNA barcoding and DNA mini-barcoding to test a variety of animal-derived food products sold in the Chinese market for potential mislabeling. Samples (52) including meat, poultry, and fish purchased from retail and online sources were examined. Regions of cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) gene (~650 bp) and 16S rRNA (~220 bp) were used as full- and mini-barcode markers, respectively. Approximately 94% (49 of 52) of the samples generated barcode sequences. The failure rate for full COI full-barcodes was 44%, but we obtained the 16S rRNA mini-barcode from 87% of the COI-failed cases. Overall, the survey revealed that 23% (12 of 52) of animal-derived products were mislabeled and, in most cases, contain undeclared species. Thus, regulatory measures and continuous monitoring for mislabeling of animal-derived products should be conducted., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

To investigate exposure characteristics and potential health risk of PM 2.5 -bound heavy metals in housewives in rural areas, 265 personal exposure samples from 143 subjects were collected in the Songjiang district, Shanghai from February 2017 to June 2018. Mass concentrations of 13 elements in PM 2.5 were determined by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF). The sources of heavy metal components in PM 2.5 were analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The inhalation health risks of exposure to Ni, V, Cr, Mn, As, and Pb were analyzed using the US EPA health risk assessment model. The results showed that the average concentration of personal exposure to PM 2.5 was 40.61 μg·m -3 in housewives, which was higher than the concentration at peripheral monitoring stations. The carcinogenic risks of Cr(Ⅵ)and As exceeded the acceptable risk level (10 -6 ). The non-carcinogenic risks of V, Cr(Ⅵ), Mn, Ni, and As were all below the safety threshold, while the total non-carcinogenic risks of these five elements were higher than the safety threshold (>1). The results of PMF indicated that resuspended dust and indoor dust(43.8%), the metallurgy industry(34.6%), coal combustion(14.5%), and fossil-fuel combustion(7.2%)were the major sources of ten elements (Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, As, and Pb) in PM 2.5 . Based on the results of health risk assessment of pollution sources, control measures on the metallurgy industry and fossil-fuel combustion should be further strengthened.

Background: Tbx2 plays a critical role in determining fates of cardiomyocytes. Little is known about the contribution of TBX2 3' untranslated region (UTR) variants to the risk of congenital heart defect (CHD). Thus, we aimed to determine the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TBX2 3' UTR with CHD susceptibility., Methods: We recruited 1285 controls and 1241 CHD children from China. SNPs identification and genotyping were detected using Sanger Sequencing and SNaPshot. Stratified analysis was conducted to explore the association between rs59382073 polymorphism and CHD subtypes. Functional analyses were performed by luciferase assays in HEK-293T and H9c2 cells., Results: Among five TBX2 3'UTR variants identified, rs59382073 minor allele T carriers had a 1.89-fold increased CHD risk compared to GG genotype (95% CI = 1.48-2.46, P = 4.48 × 10 -7 ). The most probable subtypes were right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, conotruncal, and septal defect. G to T variation decreased luciferase activity in cells. This discrepancy was exaggerated by miR-3940 and miR-708, while their corresponding inhibitors eliminated it., Conclusion: T allele of rs59382073 in TBX2 3'UTR contributed to greater CHD risk in the Han Chinese population. G to T variation created binding sites for miR-3940 and miR-708 to inhibit gene expression.

Background: Host genetic factors affect the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection as well as the progression of the disease. Epiregulin (EREG) belongs to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family, which binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to regulate the immune response of the host during infections. Our study aimed to compare EREG levels in tuberculosis (TB) patients and healthy controls and assess whether polymorphisms in EREG increase the risk of TB., Methods: We used ELISA to determine the plasma EREG level from 30 healthy controls and 50 tuberculosis patients. By evaluating the EREG gene from 624 TB patients and 600 healthy controls, we determined the allelic and genotypic frequencies for association with susceptibility to TB infections in this group., Results: This paper shows that the pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) groups showed a significantly higher plasma EREG level (1014 ± 733.9 pg/ml, 700.2 ± 676.6 pg/ml, respectively) than the healthy controls (277 ± 105.4 pg/ml). The rs2367707 polymorphism was associated with a higher risk of PTB and EPTB (P = 0.00051, P = 0.0012). Analyses of haplotype frequencies found that people with the haplotype CACAT had a higher risk of PTB and EPTB (P = 0.00031, OR = 1.43; P = 0.000053, OR = 1.65). Moreover, the rs6446993 polymorphism of the EREG gene was found to be associated with EPTB (P = 0.00087, OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.23-1.94)., Conclusions: Compared to that of healthy controls, the level of EREG in the plasma of TB patients increased significantly. Based on these data, we demonstrated that EREG polymorphisms are genetic factors for susceptibility to TB and various forms of TB.

Background: Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS), which is also known as acupuncture-like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), has been widely used in acute or chronic pain. However, previous research has not demonstrated that TEAS is effective for cancer-related pain. Opioid drugs are strongly recommended for treating cancer-related pain, but opioid-induced immunosuppression is still the most intractable drug-induced medical problem. Evaluating the efficacy and potential advantage of TEAS combined with opioid drugs in moderate and severe cancer-related pain in China is important because such studies are lacking., Methods/design: This trial is a multicenter, prospective randomized controlled clinical trial. In total, 160 patients who were enrolled from two hospitals in the Zhejiang Province (China) will be randomly allocated into two groups: a TEAS group and sham TEAS group without acupoint electrical stimulation. Both groups will receive a 21-day interval of chemotherapy and conventional cancer pain therapy. Fifteen treatment sessions will be performed over a three-week period. The primary outcomes will be measured by changes in the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores and equivalent dosage of morphine at baseline, three weeks of treatment and one two-week follow-up. The secondary outcome measures include cellular immunity function, life quality assessment, opioids side effects assessment, and safety and compliance evaluation., Discussion: This trial is expected to clarify whether TEAS is effective for cancer-related pain. These results demonstrate the advantage of TEAS combined with opioid drugs on improving immune function and decreasing opioid induced side effects., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR-13003803 . This retrospective cohort study attempts to investigate pregnancy complications and adverse pregnancy outcomes in women of advanced maternal age (AMA). Data were extracted from electronic medical records system at West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2013 to July 2016. The study cohort consisted 8 subgroups of women on 4 different age levels (20-29 years, 30-34 years, 35-39 years and ≥40 years) and 2 different parities (primiparity and multiparity). In the study period, 38811 women gave birth at our hospital, a randomized block was used to include 2800 women of singleton pregnancy >28 gestational weeks, with 350 patients in each subgroup. Maternal complications and fetal outcomes were collected and defined according to relevant guidelines. Confounding factors representing maternal demographic characteristics were identified from previous studies and analysed in multivariate analysis. There was an increasing trend for the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes with increasing age, especially in AMA groups. Our study showed that AMA, primiparity, maternal overweight or obesity, lower educational level and residence in rural area increased pregnancy complications and adverse fetal outcomes. Increased professional care as well as public concern is warranted.

It has been widely accepted that anthocyanidin 3,5-O-diglucosides do not exist in Vitis vinifera L. Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) berries. However, our anthocyanin analyses using HPLC-ESI-MS/MS detected the existence of a low level of anthocyanidin 3,5-O-diglucosides in the Cabernet Sauvignon grape berries grown in China. The authenticity of these samples was confirmed with microsatellite markers. The existence of anthocyanidin 3,5-O-diglucoside was further verified by the enzymatic evidence for the first time. Four putative 5-O-glucosyltransferase (5GT) genes were isolated from the Cabernet Sauvignon berries. The enzymatic analysis showed that a recombinant protein (designated as Vv5GT3) glucosylated the 3-O- and 5-O-positions of anthocyanidins and flavonols. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that this bifunctional enzyme belongs to the 5GT subfamily of UDP-glycosyltransferases. This finding brought a new understanding of the anthocyanins' profile and their biosynthesis in V. vinifera and would be helpful for further investigations of the mechanism of accumulation of anthocyanidin diglucosides in Cabernet Sauvignon berries in China's wine-producing regions.
