This study aims to expand the current understanding of the antecedents and consequences of green purchase intention within the context of perceived green value (PGV). This study uniquely combines PLS-SEM and NCA to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing green purchase intention, offering a novel methodological contribution to the field. By examining the roles of influence and interaction as key precursors to perceived responsibility and self-efficacy, the research adds new dimensions to understanding how these factors shape green purchase intentions. Additionally, we explore how PER and PSE impact green purchase intention (GPI), primarily through their mediating effects. The survey data collected from consumers reveal that PGV positively influences GPI. Furthermore, both PER and PSE exhibit significant chain mediation effects, with the mediation effect of perceived environmental responsibility being particularly strong. This study provides actionable insights for policymakers and electric vehicle manufacturers, emphasizing the importance of green education, certification systems, and the promotion of environmental and economic attributes to foster green purchasing behavior. The findings suggest that government efforts should focus on intensifying green education and promoting the establishment of certification and evaluation systems for electric vehicle products. Following decades of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation industry, most car companies will stop producing petrol cars and promote the development of new energy vehicles in the near future, even in China. This study is based on energy vehicle exports using China's 31 provinces' panel data from 2010 to 2020. Considering that China mainly engages in processing trade, this study analyzes the domestic energy vehicle's export sophistication after deleting intermediate goods, measuring the relationship between export sophistication and industrial upgrading with static and dynamic panel models. Then, heterogeneity tests were deployed to examine the domestic export sophistication of three major economic belts partition. The results revealed that improving export sophistication is conducive to realizing China's industrial upgrading. China's new energy vehicles industry is positively affected by export sophistication, R&D, foreign direct investment, average GDP growth rate, market factors, and human resources over the long run. Regarding regional stratification, domestic export sophistication in the eastern and western regions has more significant effects on promoting industrial upgrading than in the central region. In particular, in western regions, every increase in export sophistication by one unit will bring a significant industrial upgrading effect. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the institutional structures and other predictors that determine bilateral trade between Africa and China from 1995 to 2017. Design/methodology/approach: In line with the gravity model of trade, institutional, geographical and socio-economic determinants of China's bilateral trade with 18 African oil/minerals exporting countries are examined by deploying Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood and dynamic bias-corrected least squares dummy variable econometric techniques. Findings: The results indicate that China's oil/minerals imports from Africa are higher than imports of manufacturing and agricultural goods, and institutional structures indicate that a weak politically stable region with less control of corruption has a discernible effect on trade. Research limitations/implications: Further insight can be gained if the type of manufactured goods being exported to China is examined; this is necessary given that China crowds out Africa's manufactured goods. Therefore, this study recommends the need for Africa to continually strengthen its institutional structures to stimulate trade from other regions. Originality/value: This study examines the quality of the institutional structures (political stability and corruption) in African oil/minerals exporting countries, considering that China has been alleged for capitalising on Africa's weak institutional structures to trade with the resource-endowed region. For the first time, the UN COMTRADE HS product-country-partner-year trade data is used to examine on bilateral sector trade China–Africa links rather than proxies used in the studies of Biggeri and Sanfilippo (2009), De Grauwe et al. The unprecedented rise in China’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) stocks to resource-endowed countries in Africa from the beginning of the new millennium has generated considerable debate on the motive. Most of the existing studies on the determinants of China’s bilateral foreign investment in Africa are qualitative. While the quantitative analyses studies are limited due to data availability. We use longer time span disaggregate FDI data to empirically examine the extent to which exports, institutional quality and other explanatory variables determine China’s FDI in oil/minerals exporting African countries. We find out that, of all the exports variables, oil and agricultural exports, facilitate most of China’s foreign investment. Moreover, the institutional quality variable (political instability) has an overall negative and significant impact on FDI. While the prime objective of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) is to alleviate poverty, their sustainability is largely dependent on their productivity. Using the Malmquist approach and a panel dataset of 21 MFIs, this paper analyzes changes in the productivity of China's MFIs between 2010 and 2012. Our findings reveal that the productivity of the MFIs in China stagnated due to the lack of technological change, despite progress in technical efficiency. Technical efficiency has been bolstered by improved management practices and size effect. The findings help improve our understanding of the Chinese microfinance sector in general, and MFIs' productivity in particular. One policy implication that can be drawn from the evidence is to encourage MFIs participation in innovation activities, so that the stimulation of technological change can improve the overall productivity of Chinese MFIs. This study focuses on the determinants of board size and board independence during an economic transition in China. It contributes to the body of Chinese corporate governance studies by applying the most comprehensive analytical framework to the periods before and after the split-share structure reform. Both static and dynamic estimation methods have been used. Overall, the study found that Chinese board size and independence are jointly determined by the scope of operation, cost and benefit of monitoring, CEO's influence and other governance factors. Among these factors, the government was the most important player in constituting corporate boards before the split-share structure reform; after the reform, board independence became more important than other governance factors. Purpose This study aimed at investigating the influence of corporate governance on firm risk during the Chinese state enterprise reform. The purposes of this study are to examine the effects of board independence, state ownership and other governance variables on firm risk and to check the influence of controlling shareholder types on firm risk.Design/methodology/approach This study uses the dynamic and static panel model to estimate the effects of board independence, state ownership and other governance factors on return volatility. To examine the influence of controlling shareholder types on corporate risk-taking, this study further used the treatment effect model (or sample selection model) to analyze the effect of private, state-owned enterprise (SOE) entity, central government and local government controls on corporate risk-taking.Findings It was found that the enforcement of board independence significantly increases firm risk. The strategy of decentralizing state enterprises (from central government to local government) is a good way to achieve stable stock returns.Originality value This study contributes to existing knowledge in several ways. First, it focused on independent directors rather than on the size of the corporate board. Second, it highlighted the impacts of state ownership and control on corporate risk. The economies of Malaysia and China have become increasingly integrated through trading and investment linkages. This article focuses on one aspect of this relationship, examining Chery, a Chinese car maker, and its internationalisation strategy and its localisation efforts in Malaysia. It does this by analysing Chery's interaction with the host government, local partners and suppliers. Using an in-depth case study, it was found that Chery's experience in navigating a set of complex state-society relations in Malaysia resulted from an adaptation of its business strategy to address protectionist and institutional constraints found in Malaysia. However, while relations between Chery, the local partner and government agencies have grown strongly, few interactions have evolved between Chery and local suppliers and national research and development facilities, limiting collective learning processes and production collaboration in Malaysia. The evidence also suggests that Chery's present conundrum of low sales in the country could be solved through negotiations with the Malaysian government so as to evolve mutually beneficial partnerships with national automotive makers. China's urban housing sector has undergone a tremendous transition from a centrally-controlled economy to a socialist market-oriented scheme as a consequence of evolutionary processes of institutional change. By studying the institutions governing Cheap Rental Housing (CRH) financing, this paper analyses the intermediary role of the provincial government of Shandong in implementing centrally initiated government policies in urban China. Shandong's experience in leveraging Land Use Right Leasing and Housing Provident Funds to fund local CRH schemes amplifies that urban governance structure has been evolving where governments at sub-national levels assume an increasingly important function in executing national policies. The rising participation of provincial governments in affordable housing sector demonstrates that Chinese state can no longer be considered as a single superpower that overrides the role of local governments. The corollary of the changing power matrix in China shows that governments at each level coordinate and collaborate through the new institutional arrangements that have evolved in the planning and delivery of affordable houses. However, intra-governmental political and fiscal structures need to be increasingly calibrated to balance resource allocation to make CRH development in urban China more sustainable. This article examines critically the literature on industrial policy, regional production specialization, global production sharing, global value chains and global production networks to analyse technological capability development in clothing, automotive and semiconductor firms in China and Southeast Asia. Host-site institutional support and regional production linkages were identified as having a strong influence on firm-level technological capabilities. The article then provides the justification and the structure of the automotive, clothing and semiconductor industries, which are characterized by strong international division of labour. This conclusion draws theoretical and policy implications for technological capability building from the host-site institutional support and production linkage experiences in China and Southeast Asia. While connecting with production chains have been instrumental in the integration of developing sites in global markets, sites that managed upgrading from low to high value-added activities in the automotive, clothing and semiconductor industries relied strongly on institutional support at host sites. Hence, the global value chain approach is useful in understanding integration in the capitalist world economy. China's experience with globalization is still contested. This paper seeks to examine the impact of global integration and industrialization on labour markets in China. The evidence shows that rising trade and flows of foreign direct investment has not only quickened industrialization and structural change but it has also stimulated a rapid rise in overall and manufacturing real wages. The government's framework of absorbing marketization while maintaining planning control through decentralization has been critical in the development of technological capabilities in manufacturing. Although the nature of economic development after reforms has also widened regional inequalities with the Eastern coastal provinces enjoying higher growth and structural change than the Western and other inland provinces, rising wages suggest that the material conditions of the majority of workers in China have improved. Abstract: This paper analyses institutional change and its consequences on the conduct of state owned enterprises (SOEs) in China's housing sector since reforms began in 1978. Three distinct phases can be identified. In the pilot phase of 1978–1988, SOEs became producers and distributors of houses. In the second phase of 1988–1998, SOEs focused on the resale of public houses and became important contributors to the housing provident funds. In the third phase since 1998, SOEs expanded their role to become developers, investors and speculators in the housing market. The transformation of the urban housing sector from in-kind provision to market-based allocation helped turn losses made in the past to profits. The autonomy and the infusion of private modern management principles have stimulated upgrading in the construction and designing technology of houses developed by SOEs. However, as instruments of the state, SOEs still function as providers of social welfare to urban dwellers by promoting affordable housing to the poor, which shows that the state has remained central in balancing private and public interests in the housing market. This paper analyses the growth trajectory of China and related structural change to assess China's capacity to continue its rapid growth over the next decade. The evidence demonstrates that the multi-path approach undertaken has enabled China to transform its economy from low value-added towards high value-added activities through structural change from low to high value-added industries, as well as upgrading within industries. In doing so, China did not follow the neo-liberal advocacy of freeing markets. Selective state interventions facilitated China's transformation from an agricultural to an industrial economy over the last few decades. Upgrading towards higher value-added activities and the continuing strength of macroeconomic indicators, such as balance of payment and capital account surpluses, and low trade intensity of GDP and debt service along with significant deepening in human capital and R&D activities, suggests that China will continue to grow relatively rapidly over the next decade. To do this China needs to find solutions to growing deficits in power and water supply, and potentially dangerous political upheavals if growing economic inequality problems are not solved. Abstract: Qingdao, a coastal city in China, is located in the south of Shandong Peninsular by the Yellow sea. Its strategic location as an important port in northeast China has given the city a glorious past. The city’s urban development was flavoured with the German and Japanese architecture until it was recaptured in 1949. The liberalization of China since 1978 led to the launching of a series of preferential policy packages to spur foreign investment. Geographical proximity with South Korea and Japan helped generate strong economic synergies to drive the city’s growth. This profile captures the historical, economic and infrastructure development before and after the spatial development and housing provisions were introduced. The paper finishes by addressing the sustainability and environmental challenges that the city is increasingly facing now. The data used is drawn mainly from secondary sources, but also considerably from interviews and formal communications with the relevant officials of the urban authorities in Qingdao. This study traces the transformation of Qiaotou city from a button distribution centre to a composite and advanced button manufacturing cluster accounting for 65% of world button production in 2006. It argues that button sales originated in entrepreneurial initiative that expanded through market-based armslength transactions as hundreds of stalls mushroomed in Qiaotou. The transformation of Qiaotou from the late 1990s into a composite cluster including designing, new material and product development took place when the local government took advantage of the rapid manufacturing growth to stimulate collaborative links between government, the firms and universities to support the appropriation of research synergies. Using the evolutionary framework of inductive screening, this paper seeks to examine the drivers of technological catch-up in the integrated circuits (ICs) industry in Taiwan and China. The paper shows that IC manufacturing began with multinationals relocating export-oriented assembly operations in the 1960s in Taiwan and in the 1980s in China, but serious technological catch-up took place when, with the assistance of the government, local firms began to participate in wafer fabrication and designing activities. While foreign ownership and export markets were critical in initiating connections in the global IC value chain, the paper argues that the role of the government through funding, research and development laboratories and development of human capital were critical in local firms' technological catch-up process in both the countries. The potential impact of the greater integration of China in world and regional markets for labor markets in Southeast Asia. The impact on the individual economies could be different because of the diversity of institutional arrangements involving trade unions and workers, and labor standards.
