The reforms of 1978 transformed the Chinese economy and it has increasingly become a market-oriented economy, but with distinct Chinese characteristics. Along with the continuing importance of State Owned Enterprises and Township and Village Enterprises, the private sector too has developed significantly in recent years. The private sector, especially now has an additional, role to play in the labour market. Self-employed enterprises too have emerged significantly. Self-employment in both rural and urban areas is increasing rapidly due to a distress situation, and as a consequence of dislocations due to the development strategy. Of late, trade too has manifested wide-ranging ramifications as far as employment is concerned. In this context, this paper tries to look at recent labour market trends, and the roles of private sector and self-employment enterprises in the Chinese economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...
