The growing adoption of online platforms for educational goals has raised concerns among learners regarding online learning contexts. These platforms have been identified as productive mediums for learning English as a second language. However, learners consistently strive for enhanced platforms, and their perspectives may change when confronted with concerns about the platform's overall quality, specifically in relation to its reliability and privacy. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of platform quality, including features such as reliability, design, and security, in combination with learners' familiarity with these platforms. A quantitative research approach was utilized to accomplish this goal, which entailed circulating an online survey by 410 Chinese North East public and private university graduate and postgraduate students, which were analyzed using SmartPLS 4 software. The study's findings indicate that certain elements of website quality, such as design and privacy, do not significantly impact platform satisfaction. Learners generally prefer criteria other than design and privacy considerations when assessing language learning applications. While platform design, familiarity and satisfaction significantly impact intrinsic motivation towards English learning. These characteristics contribute to the creation of a conducive learning environment for learners, which in turn promotes motivation, engagement, and, eventually, the development of language competency. By implementing these strategies, managers can cultivate a more immersive, gratifying, and stimulating English language acquisition encounter on online platforms, resulting in heightened satisfaction and competence. Based on the study's findings, the study suggested platform executives investigate these indicators using learner feedback and appropriately modify the platform's services.

Simple Summary: Giardia duodenalis is a common zoonotic intestinal protozoan and causes significant economic losses and potential risks to public health. China is among the several major producers of donkeys worldwide, with approximately 2.6 million donkeys being reared in 2019, but studies on G. duodenalis infection in donkeys were limited. Thus, in order to better understand the molecular epidemiology of G. duodenalis in donkeys in China, 815 fecal samples were collected from donkeys in three representative geographical locations in Shanxi Province, North China, to determine the presence and genotypes of G. duodenalis based on three established loci (tpi, bg, and gdh). A total of 137 out of 815 fecal samples were detected as G. duodenalis-positive with an overall prevalence of 16.81%. Among the detected assemblages A, B, and E, the most predominant assemblage was B in the three study areas. Three MLGs (MLG-novel-1 to 3) were identified with multilocus genotypes (MLGs) analysis and validated by a phylogenetic tree. This is the first report of G. duodenalis infection in donkeys in Shanxi Province, which not only enhances our understanding of the genetic diversity of G. duodenalis in donkeys in China but also provides essential baseline data for the prevention and control of G. duodenalis infection donkeys in the study areas. In the present study, a total of 815 fecal samples collected from donkeys in representative regions of Shanxi Province, North China, were examined for G. duodenalis using nested PCR. Then, the assemblages and multilocus genotypes (MLGs) were examined based on three established loci: namely, β-giardin (bg), triosephosphate isomerase (tpi), and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh). The overall prevalence of G. duodenalis in donkeys in Shanxi Province was 16.81% (137/815). The region was identified as the main risk factor for the observed difference in G. duodenalis prevalence in donkeys among the three study areas (χ2 = 21.611, p < 0.001). Assemblages A, E, and B were identified, with the latter as the predominant assemblage. Three MLGs (MLG-novel-1 to 3) were formed based on sequence variation among the three loci. The present study reveals the presence of G. duodenalis in donkeys in Shanxi Province, North China, for the first time, which not only enriches the data on the distribution of G. duodenalis in donkeys in China but also provides useful baseline data for planning control strategies against G. duodenalis infection in the sampled areas. Second-hand clothing (SHC) benefits society by reducing the wastage of natural resources. Research in the purchase of second-hand clothing is a debated topic. It is not yet clear whether caring for self, community, and nature drives the purchase of second-hand clothing. This study unpacks the intervening factors that drive second-hand clothing purchases underpinning attitude-intention and self-determination theories. The primary purpose is to examine the direct relationship between a) mindful consumption, b) ego-involvement, c) social norms on second-hand clothing purchase intention of young consumers. The mediation of ego-involvement and social norm is examined on the above relationship. A total of 314 usable questionnaires following the convenience and purposive snowball sampling techniques were gathered from China. The structural equation model (SEM) two-step approach analyzed the data. SmartPLS3 statistical package used to run the measurement and structural model analyses. IPMA analysis confirms mindful consumption as an important factor; hence ego-involvement drives the performance of the stated relationship. Ego-involvement mediates the relationship between mindful consumption and second-hand clothing purchase. This study bridges the unanswered questions and highlights the importance of mindful consumption, an essential driver of consumer behavior. Hyphantria cunea has many hosts, a broad distribution, caused serious economic damage, is difficult to control, and has seriously affected the development of forestry in China. Control of this pest mainly relies on a combination of chemical and biological methods, including the use of sex pheromones traps and monitoring population dynamics in combination with chemical and biological control. However, developing more sustainable and effective methods for controlling of H. cunea has always been a focus of research on this species. This paper reviews the current distribution of H. cunea in China, problems in the prevention and control of this pest, and progress in the application of ecological control. It also introduces new control technologies, such as genetically-modified sterile insect technology, RNAi and Bt transgenic insect-resistant tree species. There has been increasing concern that the overuse of antibiotics in livestock farming is contributing to the burden of antimicrobial resistance in people. Farmed animals in Europe and North America, particularly pigs, provide a reservoir for livestock‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA‐MRSA ST398 lineage) found in people. This study is designed to investigate the contribution of MRSA from Chinese pig farms to human infection. A collection of 483 MRSA are isolated from 55 farms and 4 hospitals in central China, a high pig farming density area. CC9 MRSA accounts for 97.2% of all farm isolates, but is not present in hospital isolates. ST398 isolates are found on farms and hospitals, but none of them formed part of the "LA‐MRSA ST398 lineage" present in Europe and North America. The hospital ST398 MRSA isolate form a clade that is clearly separate from the farm ST398 isolates. Despite the presence of high levels of MRSA found on Chinese pig farms, the authors find no evidence of them spilling over to the human population. Nevertheless, the ST398 MRSA obtained from hospitals appear to be part of a widely distributed lineage in China. The new animal‐adapted ST398 lineage that has emerged in China is of concern. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the major etiological agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), and infection occasionally leads to fatal neurological complications in children. However, only inactivated whole-virus vaccines against EV-A71 are commercially available in Mainland China. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying the infectivity and pathogenesis of EV-A71 remain to be better understood. By adaptation of an EV-A71 B5 strain in monkey Vero cells in the presence of brilliant black BN (E151), an anti-EV-A71 agent, a double mutant with VP1-V238A, K244R emerged whose infection was enhanced by E151. The growth of the reverse genetics (RG) mutant RG/B5-VP1-V238A, K244R (RG/B5-AR) was promoted by E151 in Vero cells but inhibited in other human and murine cells, while its parental wild type, RG/B5-wt, was strongly prevented by E151 from infection in all tested cells. In the absence of E151, RG/B5-AR exhibited defective cell entry/exit, resulting in reduced viral transmission and growth in vitro. It had augmented binding affinity to sulfated glycans, cells, and tissue/organs, which probably functioned as decoys to restrict viral dissemination and infection. RG/B5-AR was also attenuated, with a 355 times higher 50% lethal dose (LD50) and a shorter timing of virus clearance than those of RG/B5-wt in suckling AG129 mice. However, it remained highly immunogenic in adult AG129 mice and protected their suckling mice from lethal EV-A71 challenges through maternal neutralizing antibodies. Overall, discovery of the attenuated mutant RG/B5-AR contributes to better understanding of virulence determinants of EV-A71 and to further development of novel vaccines against EV-A71. The article describes a new Leptobrachella damingshanensis anuran species from central Guangxi, China based on morphological, molecular and acoustic data. Topics include the result of a phylogenetic analyses of the species using 16S rRNA gene fragment, a combination of characters in which the species differs from all known congeners, and a list of species included in the genus Leptobrachella found on the islands of Southeast Asia to the eastern Himalayas.

Background: The bark of Securidaca inappendiculata Hassk. is traditionally used for treating inflammatory diseases and bone fractures in China. We have previously validated the xanthone-enriched fraction (XRF) of S. inappendiculata with anti-rheumatic potentials, but mechanism underlying the joints protective effects is still largely unknown. Materials and Methods: The male rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) were treated with XRF. The therapeutic efficacy of XRF was evaluated by arthritis score changes, morphological observation of paws, histological examinations and serological analyses. Protein expression in tissues and cells was investigated by either immunohistochemical or immunoblotting methods, while levels of mRNA expression were investigated by RT-qPCR. Metabolites in serum were detected by LC-MS approach. The joints homogenates were used for analyzing possible targeted genes by genome microarray analyses. Results: Treatment with XRF and methotrexate (MTX) led to significant decrease in arthritis scores, and alleviated deformation of paws in CIA rats. In addition, XRF and MTX reduced circulating TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-17α in the serum and down-regulated TLR4/NF-κB and JNK pathways in joints of CIA rats. Compared to MTX, XRF-loading microemulsion significantly protected joints, which was accompanied by dramatic decrease in MMP3. Differential genes-based KEGG enrichment and metabolomics analysis suggested that XRF reduced fatty acids biosynthesis by regulating PPAR-γ signaling. S inappendiculata-derived 1,7-dihydroxy-3,4-dimethoxyxanthone (XAN) up-regulated PPAR-γ expression in macrophages, but suppressed it in pre-adipocytes in vitro, which was synchronized with SIRT1 changes. Adiponectin production and SCD-1 expression in pre-adipocytes were also decreased. Aside the direct inhibition on MMP3 expression in synovioblast, the presence of XAN in macrophages-pre-adipocytes co-culture system further reinforced this effect. Conclusion: This study revealed the joint protective  advantages of the bioactive fraction from S. inappendiculata in CIA rats over MTX, and demonstrated that S. inappendiculata-derived xanthones suppressed the erosive nature of synovioblast acquired under inflammatory circumstances by regulating PPAR-γ signaling-controlled metabolism-immunity feedback. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the sleep quality of college students and related factors from a new perspective by using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). A total of 1,288 college students from four universities in Wuhu city participated in the study. LCA was used to identify the classes of sleep behaviors. Differences in class membership related to selected research factors were examined using multinomial logistic regression analysis.Four distinct classes of behaviors were identified: (1) good sleep (Class 1, 31.8%), (2) prolonged sleep latency (Class 2, 49.1%), (3) sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction (Class 3, 6.8%), (4) multiple poor sleep behavior (Class 4, 12.3%). The latent classes of sleep behavior were correlated with the DBAS-16 total score (rs = −0.109, P < 0.001). Learning pressure and mental state during the day could affect overall sleep (Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4), and female students were at higher risk of severe sleep problems (Class 3 and Class 4), while bedtime exercised could improve mild sleep problems (Class 2). The sleep behavior of college students in Wuhu city has obvious class heterogeneity, and different influencingfactors may affect sleep to varying degrees. Adult patients with relapsed or refractory T‐cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R‐T‐ALL) have extremely poor prognosis, representing an urgent unmet medical need. Finding an optimal salvage regimen to bridge transplantation is a priority. The CAG (cytarabine, aclarubicin, and G‐CSF) regimen was initially used by one group in China, showing unexpectedly promising results in 11 R/R‐T‐ALL patients. Here, we report the multicenter results of 41 patients who received the CAG regimen as salvage therapy. After one cycle of the CAG regimen, complete remission and partial remission were achieved in 33 (80.5%) and two (4.9%) patients, respectively. Failure to respond was observed in six patients (14.6%). Early T‐cell precursor (ETP) (n = 26) and non‐ETP (n = 15) patients had a similar CR rate (80.8% vs 80.0%, P =.95). Among 41 patients, allo‐HSCT was successfully performed in 27 (66%) patients (22 in CR and 5 in non‐CR). With a median follow‐up time of 12 months, the estimated 2‐year overall survival and event‐free survival were 68.8% (95% CI, 47.3%‐83.0%) and 56.5% (95% CI, 37.1%‐71.9%), respectively. The CAG regimen was well‐tolerated, and no early death occurred. Our multicenter results show that the CAG regimen is highly effective and safe, representing a novel choice for adult patients with R/R‐T‐ALL and providing a better bridge to transplantation. Daphniphyllum peltatum Yan Liu & T. Meng, a new species of Daphniphyllaceae from southwestern Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is mainly similar to D. calycinum Benth. in the shape of leaf blade, lunate anthers, elliptic drupes and the length of infructescence, but it can be easily distinguished by blue green branchlets, peltate leaves, obviously raised midvein and lateral veins on both surfaces. We also provide a key to all species of Daphniphyllum in China, and a table to distinguish the new species from D. calycinum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

They comprise laws and regulations, emergency plans, and military regulations, and define three exceptional or emergency states: war, emergency and emergency response, with the aim of constructing a comprehensive integrated system based on the specialized division of labor. In practice, however, emergency plans take the place of laws and regulations and provide the fundamental normative basis for tackling emergencies, with government and the military playing the dominant role. Developing out of necessity and possessing temporary applicability, China’s emergency laws are characterized by authorization and prevention. Integrating emergency law with the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics, formulating basic law for emergency situations and improving the specific mechanisms of emergency law should be regarded as major steps in its future development. This research aims to study the impact of implicit emotion on the use of theory of mind and enrich the research on emotions and the use of theory of mind, thus allowing adults to apply theory of mind more effectively in the context of social interaction. This study includes 120 college students as participants. A two (level of theory of mind: high vs. low) * three (implicit emotional state: implicit positive emotion, implicit neutral emotion, or implicit negative emotion) * two (private knowledge: endowed vs. unendowed) between-subjects three-factor design was employed. This study obtained the following results: (1) The main effect of different implicit emotional states on college students' use of theory of mind is significant. College students with implicit positive emotions use theory of mind much less than those with implicit neutral and negative emotions. (2) In cases of implicit positive emotions, college students with a low level of theory of mind use theory of mind substantially less than students with a high level of theory of mind. In cases of implicit neutral and negative emotions, college students with the high and low theory of mind do not exhibit substantial differences in their use of theory of mind. The clinical data of 149 patients who underwent successful laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) between January 2014 and September 2017 were analyzed in the present study. The incidence of portal vein system thrombosis (PVST) in patients with and without cirrhosis was 32.0% and 9.5%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the ratio of the postoperative maximum platelet (PLT) count to the preoperative PLT count (r=1.144; P=0.007) was the risk factor for PVST in all patients after LS. Of patients who received prophylactic anticoagulation, 9 and 6 cases of PVST in patients with and without cirrhosis, respectively, (37.5% vs. 85.7%; P=0.037) resolved during hospitalization. In patients who underwent LS, a PLT count increasing to >8 times baseline levels after surgery was the risk factor for PVST after LS, and the sensitivity to anticoagulation postoperatively was significantly higher in patients without cirrhosis than in those with cirrhosis.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by a cluster of metabolic disorders including abnormal lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is involved in the regulation of the metabolism of cholesterol, lipoproteins, and triglycerides. The common ApoE polymorphism has been found to be associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This study evaluated the ApoE genetic polymorphism and its relation to MetS defined by the modified National Cholesterol Education Program and International Diabetes Federation criteria in a population-based cross-sectional survey of an elderly Chinese population in Beijing, China. Genotypes of 937 men and 1385 women were included in the study. All participants were measured for blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, and fasting concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. We applied a logistic regression model to derive adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals. In this Chinese population, the ɛ2, ɛ3, and ɛ4 allele frequencies were 8.3%, 83.4%, and 8.3% for men and 8.7%, 82.9%, and 8.4% for women, respectively. In men, concentrations of fasting triglycerides were higher among the APOE2 and E4 subjects; and a lower level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was observed in the APOE4 group. There were approximately linear associations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with APOE genotype groups in both men and women. We observed that the ɛ4 allele was associated with a significantly increased OR of MetS defined by the modified National Cholesterol Education Program criteria in men (OR, 1.75; 95% confidence interval, 1.17-2.63). Aromatase, encoded by the CYP19A1 gene, is a key enzyme in estradiol biosynthesis, which catalyzes the conversion of androstenedione and testosterone to estrone and estradiol, respectively. Given the critical role of estrogen in the development of endometrial cancer risk, we evaluated genetic polymorphisms of the CYP19A1 gene, including rs1065779, rs700519, rs28566535, rs752760, and rs1870050, in association with endometrial cancer in a population-based case-control study conducted in Shanghai, China. Genotypes of 1,040 incident endometrial cancer cases and 1,031 frequency-matched controls were included in the study. We applied a logistic regression model to derive adjusted odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Six common haplotypes with a frequency >or=5% were estimated; the highest frequency haplotype was GCACA (27.8% in cases and 26.2% in controls). We observed an inverse association between CYP19A1 haplotype TCATC and endometrial cancer in our population (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.62-0.92). An inverse association was found between endometrial cancer and single nucleotide polymorphism rs1870050 in the promoter region with ORs of 0.81 (95% CI, 0.68-0.97) and 0.58 (95% CI, 0.42-0.80) for the AC and CC genotypes, respectively. We observed a multiplicative interaction between single nucleotide polymorphism rs700519 and body mass index among postmenopausal women (P = 0.01), with stronger associations between rs700519 genotypes and endometrial cancer risk among heavier (body mass index, >or=25) postmenopausal women. In summary, our data show that polymorphisms in the CYP19A1 gene may contribute to endometrial carcinogenesis.

Oral contraceptive (OC) and intrauterine device (IUD) use have been shown to be protective factors for endometrial cancer in several epidemiological studies; however, few studies have been conducted in Chinese populations. We evaluated the association between OC and IUD use and endometrial cancer risk in a population-based case-control study among Chinese women in Shanghai, China. The study included 1,204 newly diagnosed endometrial cancer cases and 1,212 age frequency-matched healthy controls. Logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). In our study population, 18.5% cases and 24.9% controls reported having ever used OCs with an OR of 0.75 (95% CI, 0.60-0.93), after adjusting for known risk or protective factors for endometrial cancer. The risk of endometrial cancer decreased with long-term use of OCs with the OR for more than 72 months of use being 0.50 (95% CI, 0.30-0.85). The effect of OC use remained 25 or more years after cessation of use; the associated OR was 0.57 (95% CI = 0.42-0.78) as compared to nonusers. Similarly, fewer cases than controls had ever used IUD, with the multivariable adjusted OR being 0.53 (95% CI = 0.43-0.65). A reduction in risk was observed regardless the duration of use or age at first and last use. These results suggest that OC and IUD use may confer long-term protection against endometrial cancer.

The authors evaluated the associations of ginseng use as a complementary therapy with survival and quality of life (QOL) in a cohort of 1,455 breast cancer patients who were recruited to the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study between August 1996 and March 1998 in Shanghai, China. Patients were followed through December 2002. Information on ginseng use before cancer diagnosis was collected at baseline recruitment and was linked to survival. Survivors' ginseng use after cancer diagnosis was obtained at the follow-up survey and was correlated to QOL at the same time. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression models were applied to evaluate the association of ginseng use with overall and disease-free survival. The relation of ginseng use and QOL was evaluated by using multiple linear regression models. Approximately 27% of study participants were regular ginseng users before cancer diagnosis. Compared with patients who never used ginseng, regular users had a significantly reduced risk of death; adjusted hazard ratios associated with ginseng use were 0.71 (95% confidence interval: 0.52, 0.98) for total mortality and 0.70 (95% confidence interval: 0.53, 0.93) for disease-specific mortality/recurrence. Ginseng use after cancer diagnosis, particularly current use, was positively associated with QOL scores, with the strongest effect in the psychological and social well-being domains. Additionally, QOL improved as cumulative ginseng use increased.

The authors investigated the association between overweight at the time of or soon after cancer diagnosis and survival in a cohort of 1,455 breast cancer patients aged 25-64 years. The patients were recruited into the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study (Shanghai, China), a population-based case-control study, between August 1996 and March 1998. The median follow-up time for this cohort was 5.1 years (1996-2002) after breast cancer diagnosis, and 240 deaths were identified. Being overweight at cancer diagnosis or soon afterward, as measured by body mass index (BMI; weight (kg)/height (m)(2)), was associated with poorer overall survival and disease-free survival. Five-year survival rates were 86.5%, 83.8%, and 80.1% for subjects whose BMIs were <23.0, 23.0-24.9, and >or=25.0, respectively (p = 0.02); the corresponding 5-year disease-free survival rates were 81.9%, 78.1%, and 76.6% (p = 0.05). The inverse association between BMI and survival persisted after adjustment for age at diagnosis and other known prognostic factors for breast cancer, including disease stage. The authors found neither waist:hip ratio nor waist circumference to be independently associated with overall survival or disease-free survival. These results suggest that excess weight may be an independent predictor of breast cancer survival among Chinese women.
