The performance of two thermoluminescent dosimetry systems (RGD-3D and RE2000) manufactured in China and Finland was compared. Both of these dosimetry systems demonstrated satisfactory results as their performance met the requirements of the standard. The two dosimetry systems showed similar performance in the energy response. The RGD-3D dosimetry system performed better in nonlinear response, minimum detectable level and blind sample tests, whereas the RE2000 dosimetry system showed better stability., (© The Author(s) 2024. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of environmental radioactivity in Shanghai from the operation of Qinshan Nuclear Power Station (QNPS). The levels of terrestrial gamma radiation and radioactivities in the drinking water, main food and soils in the Jinshan area where is only 38 km far away from the QNPS were continuously measured in the past 19 y. Both the levels of terrestrial gamma radiation and the radioactivities in the samples were on the normal background levels. No significant changes were found before and after the running of QNPS. The annual public exposure to the terrestrial gamma radiation was estimated to be ∼0.1 mSv, and the annual exposure from intakes of (90)Sr and (137)Cs in food was ∼0.5 μSv. In the past 19 y, no significant impact on the environmental radioactivity in Shanghai was observed due to the operation of QNPS.

The reliability of equivalent doses (De) from Chinese loess, measured using isothermal thermoluminescence (ITL) is tested. Dose calculations use the single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) procedure. Despite good reproducibility of laboratory-induced signals and negligible response at zero dose, a significant overestimation of De is observed, compared with OSL measurements. Measurement of a known laboratory dose administered after optical bleaching, but before any heating, demonstrates that the first heating during measurement of the natural signal causes a significant sensitivity change, undetected by SAR. Using the single-aliquot regeneration and added (SARA) dose procedure, which allows for initial sensitivity change, good agreement with OSL is obtained after allowance is made for initial incomplete bleaching. It is concluded that SAR-ITL, in its present form, is not a suitable method for dating Chinese loess; it is very important to undertake a dose recovery test before any TL procedure is used to date sediments.

Investigation on bubble detectors started in China in 1989. Five types of bubble detectors have been developed, with LET thresholds ranging from 0.05 to 6.04 MeV mg(-1) cm(2) at 25 degrees C. The neutron response of bubble detectors made with freon-12 has been investigated with mono-energetic neutrons from 20 keV to 19 MeV. Its effective threshold energy for neutron detection is approximately 100 keV at 28 degrees C. The response above this threshold is approximately 1.5 x 10(-4) (bubble cm(-2))/(n cm(-2)). Bubble detectors are unique not only for neutron dosimetry but also for monitoring and identifying high-energy heavy ions such as cosmic radiation in the space. High-energy heavy ion tracks in large size bubble detectors have been investigated in cooperation with scientists in Japan. The key parameter behind the thresholds of bubble detectors for track registration is the critical rate of energy loss. Three approaches to identify high-energy heavy ions with bubble detectors are suggested.

This paper describes CaSO4:Dy and LiF:Mg, Cu, P which were used for ambient environmental monitoring before the nuclear power plant operation in Guangdong Daya Bay, China, in 1991. Since LiF:Mg, Cu, P was first used as an environmental dosimeter in this laboratory, the intercomparison of both thermoluminescent dosimeters, including laboratory irradiation and environmental exposure in Beijing reference spots, was conducted in cooperation with National Institute of Metrology and Laboratory of Industrial Hygiene, measured values of both thermoluminescent dosimeters were in agreement with the error being less than +or- 2% for the laboratory irradiation. The results of measurement by both thermoluminescent dosimeters were quite in agreement with environmental reference exposure rates measured by a pressurized ionization chamber. The largest error of CaSO4:Dy environmental monitoring results in Daya Bay also showed that the differences of measurement results between two thermoluminescent dosimeters were not significant. The experiment results indicated that LiF:Mg, Cu, P was a good environmental dosimeter.
