Purpose: The aims of the study were to adapt the Fatigue Severity Scale to Chinese conditions and assess the psychometric properties of the Chinese version in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and nondepressive people.Methods: A total of 101 patients with MDD and 94 nondepressive persons were included in this study. A forward and backward translation procedure was performed for developing a culturally acceptable Chinese version of the Fatigue Severity Scale (CFSS). Validity was assessed according to construct validity, internal consistency, concurrent validity, divergent validity, and contrasted-group validity.Results: The CFSS exhibited a one-factor structure in patients with MDD and the nondepressive participants. A 7-item version of CFSS and an 8-item version of the CFSS demonstrated better model fit than the original 9-item version in the patients with MDD and the nondepressive participants, respectively. In both participant groups, internal consistency values were within acceptable ranges. In addition, concurrent validity and divergent validity were confirmed in both groups. The average CFSS score of patients with MDD was significantly higher than that of the nondepressive participants.Conclusion: The 9-item CFSS is a valid instrument for assessing fatigue-related impairment in Chinese-speaking patients with MDD. However, the two reduced-item CFSS versions showed better psychometric properties than the original version in the patients with MDD and the nondepressive participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Objectives: To systematically review and meta-analyze the associations between sleep disturbances and suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts in adolescents and explore potential moderators of these associations., Methods: Embase, PubMed, ProQuest, and the China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database were searched from their inception dates to October 19, 2018. We selected cross-sectional, prospective, or retrospective studies without time or language restrictions., Results: Nine cross-sectional studies, four prospective studies, and one retrospective report that, respectively, involved 37 536, 9295, and 80 adolescents were included in the meta-analysis. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that adolescents with sleep disturbances were at higher risks of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts (pooled odds ratios [ORs] = 2.35, 1.58, and 1.92) than those without sleep disturbances. Prospective reports indicated that sleep disturbances in adolescents significantly predicted the risk of suicidal ideation but not suicide attempts (pooled ORs = 1.79 and 1.98, 95% confidence intervals = 1.36-2.36 and 0.62-6.29, respectively). The retrospective study did not support the association between sleep disturbances and suicide attempts. Depression did not moderate the associations between sleep disturbances and suicidal ideation or attempts in adolescents. Adolescents with insomnia complaints had a higher risk of suicidal ideation than those with other sleep complaints. Age, the female percentage, and reliable sleep measures were significant moderators (all p < .05)., Conclusions: Sleep disturbances, particularly insomnia, should be considered an influencing factor when developing preventive strategies against adolescent suicidal ideation. Objectives: To translate the Mental Fatigue Scale into a Chinese version (CMFS), to develop a more valid and precise CMFS by using an item response theory-based model, and to examine the reliability and validity of the CMFS., Methods: One hundred and fifty adults having traumatic brain injury for at least 6 months were included. Each participant completed a battery of questionnaires (i.e. the Chinese version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale [ChCFS], Chinese version of the Clinically Useful Depression Outcome Scale [CUDOS-Chinese], and CMFS). Two-parameter graded response models were used to evaluate the location and discrimination performance of the CMFS. The reliability and validity of the CMFS were also evaluated., Results: One item investigating 'increased sleep at night' (item 14) was removed because it had a low discrimination value (0.86) and provided less information. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the 13-item CMFS were high (0.92 and 0.96, respectively). The CMFS score was positively correlated with the ChCFS and the CUDOS-Chinese scores (r = 0.77 and 0.80, respectively)., Conclusion: The CMFS provides reliable and valid information on mental fatigue for future research and clinical practice involving patients with traumatic brain injury.

Background: Common pain assessment tools might not be the suitable tools to measure ventilated, critically ill patients' pain. The Behavioral Pain Scale measures observable behavior indicative of pain experienced by mechanically ventilated patients., Objective: This study was conducted to generate a Chinese-language version of the Behavioral Pain Scale and to test its psychometric properties., Design: This study was a prospective psychometric study., Settings/participants: : Seventy patients were recruited from two intensive care units in a medical center., Methods: After instrument translation, psychometric testing which included inter-rater reliability, test-retest reliability, and construct validity was conducted. The construct validity was tested using criterion and discriminant validation strategies. A receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to evaluate the ability of the translated tool to correctly detect pain. Measurement of body temperature and endotracheal suctioning were, respectively, selected as the non-painful and painful procedures. Two research nurses observed patients' pain-related behaviors when they were at rest and before/during the non-painful/painful procedures., Results: The Chinese translation captured the content of the original tool with appropriate adaptation to the cultural context. The inter-rater and test-retest reliabilities were confirmed by good Pearson correlations (r=.50-1.00, p<.001) and high agreement percentages (72.9-100.0%). The criterion validity was confirmed by (a) the score during the painful procedure for patients who considered it to be painful being higher than the score for patients who considered it not to be painful (t=2.28, p=.03), and (b) an increase in the score occurred for two (2.9%) patients during the non-painful procedure and for 68 (97.1%) patients during the painful procedure. The discriminant validity was confirmed by post hoc comparisons in a one-way ANOVA: the scores during the painful procedure were higher than the scores on other occasions (F=377.7, p<.001). The receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the translated tool had moderate accuracy., Conclusions: The Chinese-language version of the Behavior Pain Scale was shown to be reliable and valid for adult patients on mechanical ventilation in medical intensive care units when exposed to rest, a non-painful procedure, and a painful procedure. An assessment tool including pain-related observable indicators can be used as one source to assess a patient's pain, especially with ventilated or non-communicative patients., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
