Both mistletoes and their hosts are challenged by increasing drought, highlighting the necessity of understanding their comparative hydraulic properties. The high transpiration of mistletoes requires efficient water transport, while high xylem tensions demand strong embolism resistance, representing a hydraulic paradox. This study, conducted across four environments with different aridity indices in Yunnan, China, examined the xylem traits of 119 mistletoe-host species pairs. Mistletoes showed lower water use efficiency, indicating a more aggressive water use. They also showed lower hydraulic efficiency (lower vessel diameter and theoretical hydraulic conductivity) but higher safety (lower vulnerability index and higher conduit wall reinforcement, vessel grouping index, and wood density) compared with their hosts, supporting the trade-off between efficiency and safety. Environmental variation across sites significantly affected xylem trait comparisons between mistletoes and hosts. Additionally, the xylem traits of mistletoes were strongly influenced by host water supply efficiency. The overall xylem trait relationships in mistletoes and hosts were different. These findings stress the impact of host and site on the hydraulic traits of mistletoes, and suggest that mistletoes may achieve high transpiration by maintaining high stomatal conductance under low water potentials. The escalating impact of land use pressures indicates we've exceeded the proposed safe planetary boundary. Economic shifts and increased trade drive China's demand for agricultural and forestry products, land-use changes, and subsequent biodiversity damage often occur far from where they are consumed. Given many species in China are endemic or endangered, neglecting these interconnected economic trends threatens its biodiversity conservation targets. Here, we first quantify species loss due to six land use types embodied in the life cycle at the Chinese sub-national level. Then, a Chinese high-resolution multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model was used to link threatened species to key industrial sectors in the supply chain, tracking the spatiotemporal patterns of land use species loss embodied in Chinese trade from 2007 to 2017. Our results reveal a 6% increase in aggregated species loss in China during the study period. This subtle change in species loss footprints in recent years is partially due to increases in consumption levels being offset by reductions in species loss intensity, though drivers vary by region. Notably, the Northwest and Southwest, known for their high species richness, suffer the greatest inequalities in species loss. The domestic species loss transfer most apparent in the outsourcing from the Eastern Coast to the Southwest. The Southwest registered the highest territory-based species loss, particularly for amphibians, while the highest impacts in the supply chain are associated with Forestry, logging, and related activities. Our analysis underscores the need for enhanced provincial dialogue to systematically value and monitor biodiversity, a key natural capital, and encourage its conservation. An aerobic, Gram-positive, and non-motile actinomycete, designated HL-66  T , was isolated from a soil sample collected in the Meridian Valley, Shaanxi Province, China. Morphological, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic characteristics showed a high similarity to the genus Streptomyces. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbour of HL-66  T were Streptomyces lavendofoliae NBRC 12882  T (99.17%), Streptomyces gobitricini NBRC 15419  T (99.03%) and Streptomyces roseolilacinus NBRC 12815  T (98.96%). Genome relatedness indexes revealed that the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between HL-66  T and its closest phylogenomic relative (S. roseolilacinus JCM 4335  T ) were 88.61% and 32.10%, respectively. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contains LL -diaminopimelic acid. Predominant menaquinones are MK-9 (H 6 ), MK-9(H 4 ) and MK-9(H 8 ). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C 16:0 , anteiso-C 15:0 , iso-C 16:1 H, and C 16:1 ω7c. The polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides, and an unknown phospholipid. Based on phylogenetic analyses, genome-genome distance calculation, and average nucleotide identity, strain HL-66  T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces. Old trees have many ecological and socio-cultural values. However, knowledge of the factors influencing their long-term persistence in human-dominated landscapes is limited. Here, using an extensive database (nearly 1.8 million individual old trees belonging to 1,580 species) from China, we identified which species were most likely to persist as old trees in human-dominated landscapes and where they were most likely to occur. We found that species with greater potential height, smaller leaf size and diverse human utilization attributes had the highest probability of long-term persistence. The persistence probabilities of human-associated species (taxa with diverse human utilization attributes) were relatively high in intensively cultivated areas. Conversely, the persistence probabilities of spontaneous species (taxa with no human utilization attributes and which are not cultivated) were relatively high in mountainous areas or regions inhabited by ethnic minorities. The distinctly different geographic patterns of persistence probabilities of the two groups of species were related to their dissimilar responses to heterogeneous human activities and site conditions. A small number of human-associated species dominated the current cohort of old trees, while most spontaneous species were rare and endemic. Leaf form (compound vs. simple) and habit (evergreen vs. deciduous) are key functional traits of trees to adapt to various climates and are vital in determining plant response to climate change. However, their association and climatic determinants remain uncertain, especially in East Asian forests in the largest monsoon region on earth. To fill these knowledge gaps, we compiled a dataset comprising 42 intact forests and over 2200 angiosperm tree species across China (spanning 30 latitudes and 47 longitudes). The geographical and climatic patterns of leaf form and habit were analyzed. The association between compound leaf and deciduousness was tested for tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones. We found that both the percentage of compound leaf (CT%) and deciduous tree species (DT%) increased with latitude and decreased with mean annual precipitation (MAP). For all forests, DT% was negatively related to mean annual temperature (MAT), whereas CT% was not. Nevertheless, both DT% and CT% increased with increasing MAT in the tropics, possibly owing to the high vapor pressure deficits (VPD) and canopy water deficits associated with high temperatures. A positive linear relationship between CT% and DT% was found across all forests and within different climatic zones except for temperate, and the intercept of the regression line was significantly higher in the tropics than in the subtropics. Overall, as supported by principal component analysis, deciduousness was negatively associated with both temperature and precipitation, while CT negatively with precipitation only across zones and positively with temperature in the tropics. Different relationships in different climatic zones suggest potentially different selective forces. Located in northwestern South China Sea (SCS), the Beibu Gulf constitutes an environmentally sensitive region shaped by land-ocean-atmosphere interactions in Asia between the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans. This study aims to provide a comprehensive view of the sub-fossil diatom biogeography, distribution pattern and oceanographic environmental controls with support of multivariate methods based on Beibu Gulf core-top samples. Cluster analysis of diatom assemblages divides the distribution pattern into four subclusters. Sea surface salinity (SSS), temperature (SST), trophic state (chlorophyll a concentration in this study) and water depth constrain the diatom distribution pattern through canonical redundancy analysis although only partly support an interpretation of the relationship between these various variables. Chlorophyll a has a strong correlation to diatom distribution, and responds to Paralia sulcata occurrence, while SSS and SST also have significant influence and indicate warm water invasion from the open SCS. Water depth is a subordinate factor in terms of Beibu Gulf diatom distribution. The ca. 25 m water-depth marks the upper extent of Paralia sulcata dominance in the northern Beibu Gulf. A strong mixing area with a complex diatom distribution exists below this water depth in the middle of Beibu Gulf. Coastal currents from north of SCS invade Beibu Gulf through Qiongzhou Strait and south of Hainan Island, as recorded by higher percentages of Paralia sulcata and Cyclotella striata at these sites. Our results provide a selection of evaluation method for a marine ecological red-line definition for sustainable development. Background: Coating seed with pesticides is an effective way to control plant pests, however, factory-based coating processes may carry a potential risk to operational workers of chemical exposure. To study the risk, carbofuran and tebuconazole were used to coat corn seed and their subsequent distribution on the bodies of workers was measured at manufacturers XFS and LS (Shanxi, China). Clothing was collected from workers during operations and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography., Results: At XFS, dermal exposure to carbofuran was 4.83, 3.31 and 1.48 mg kg -1 , and exposure to tebuconazole was 6.88, 5.16 and 1.72 mg kg -1 for coating, packing and transport workers, respectively. At LS, dermal exposure to carbofuran was 2.32, 0.46 and 0.55 mg kg -1 , and exposure to tebuconazole was 1.69, 0.46 and 0.70 mg kg -1 , for coating, packing and transport workers, respectively. The level of pesticide exposure was significantly higher for seed-coating workers than for packing and transport workers. The main area of exposure was the hands for all workers and the lower limbs for packers; exposure was relatively uniform for pesticide handlers. Occupational risk was assessed based on margin of exposure (MOE). In seed-coating, the MOE was greater than 100 for tebuconazole, indicating no potential risk, but ranged from 0.25 to 2.88 for carbofuran, indicating the risk of a health impact., Conclusion: The level of exposure varied depending on type of operation undertaken and body parts of workers' body, but the risk of a health impact was highly associated with pesticide toxicity. El Niño events have great impacts on marine ecosystems worldwide, ranging from low trophic plankton production to fishery resources. Understanding how ecosystems respond to El Niño is the key to the success of ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM). However, few studies have focussed on the ecosystems respond to this natural perturbation in China seas, and the selection of effective ecological network analyses (ENA) indicators to evaluate the ecosystem response under El Niño conditions needs to be assessed. In this study, we constructed Ecopath models for Haizhou Bay in ENSO-neutral (2013) and El Niño (2015) years. Comprehensive analyses were conducted to evaluate ENA indicators in terms of sensitivity to the ecosystem variations, robustness to the model parameters uncertainties, and statistical check. Results showed that there were obvious variations in the species composition and biomass in the Haizhou Bay ecosystem under the El Niño event. Four optimal ENA indicators were selected, including total system throughput, total primary production, total system non-cycled throughflow, and ascendency. The indicators further showed a shrunken ecosystem size, increased energetic efficiency, and less organised ecosystem under the El Niño event. These findings enhance our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and underscore the need for precautionary management under El Niño conditions. This paper evaluates the performance of different observer coverage rates and 9 possible sampling designs to estimate via computer simulation the total catch of target and non-target species for Chinese tuna longline fisheries in the Pacific Ocean. The stratified random samplings include different stratification schemes (based on target species or fishing areas) with different strategies for allocating observers. The observer data from 103 vessels between 2010 and 2019 were assumed to be the "true" sampling population. We concluded that the accuracy of catch estimates had a significant positive relationship with species detectability and observer coverage rate. On average, the accuracy improved by 50% when the coverage rate increases from 5 to 20%. Current simple random sampling in Chinese tuna longline fisheries is less efficient for monitoring many species. Stratified sampling designs based on the target species tended to yield the most accurate estimates of the total catch. Allocating the observers based on the scale of the fleets in different stratum seemed to be less efficient. The proportion of observers between different fleets should be adjusted according to different monitoring objectives. In general, a large proportion of observers are recommended to be allocated onboard vessels targeting bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). This study has the potential to have a significant contribution to future designs of the observer monitoring programs in Chinese tuna longline fishery and many other fisheries.

Growth rate varies across plant species and represents an important ecological strategy for competition, resource-use and fitness. However, empirical studies often show a low predictability of functional traits to tree growth. We measured stem diameter and height growth rates (DGRs and HGRs) of 96 juvenile trees (2-5 m tall) of eight evergreen and eight deciduous broadleaf tree species over three consecutive years in a subtropical forest in south-western China. We examined the relationships between tree growth rates and 20 leaf/stem traits that are associated with carbon gain, stem hydraulics and nutrient-use efficiency, as well as the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. We found that cross-species variations of stem DGR/HGR can be predicted by leaf photosynthetic capacity, leaf mass per area, xylem-theoretical-specific hydraulic conductivity, wood density (WD) and photosynthetic-nutrient-use efficiencies. Higher leaf carbon assimilation and lower leaf/stem constructing costs facilitate deciduous species to be more resource acquisitive and consequently faster growth within a relatively shorter growing season, whereas evergreen species exhibit more conservative strategies and thus slower growth. Furthermore, stem growth rates of evergreen species showed were more dependence on leaf carbon gains, whereas stem hydraulic efficiency was more important for deciduous tree growth. Our results suggest that physiological traits (photosynthesis, hydraulics and nutrient-use efficiency) can predict tree diameter and height growth of subtropical tree species. Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been increasingly used as a primary tool for fisheries management and conservation. Over the past few decades, the implementation of MPAs has achieved mixed results with regard to conservation goals, which has driven the scientific community to contemplate what factors may determine the effectiveness of an MPA. Most previous analyses have tended to focus on the design criteria of MPAs as well as post-closure management capabilities, but pre-closure conditions are seldom considered. Here, we investigate the effects of varying pre-closure fishing effort scenarios on MPA performance by applying a developed evaluation framework and age-structured dynamic model for the small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) in Haizhou Bay, China. We specifically focus on the overall fishing pressure imposed on the fish population and the spatial heterogeneity of fishing effort. We used ecological and social indicators to evaluate the effects of MPAs. Our results demonstrate that MPAs with lower pre-closure fishing pressure are more effective than those with higher pre-closure fishing pressure in recovering the fish population. Highly aggregated fishing efforts inside the MPAs prior to their implementations could also make MPAs less effective. By comparing our findings to other studies, we noticed that evaluation metrics and time frames could make a difference in determining the effects of a given MPA, which indicates the importance of monitoring programs. From a social perspective, placing MPAs in heavily exploited areas without additional harvest regulations may result in a tragedy of the commons situation that leads to a significant loss in catches. Species distribution models (SDMs) have been increasingly used to predict the geographic distribution of a wide range of organisms; however, relatively fewer research efforts have concentrated on rare species despite their critical roles in biological conservation. The present study tested whether community data may improve modelling rare species by sharing information among common and rare ones. We chose six SDMs that treat community data in different ways, including two traditional single-species models (random forest and artificial neural network) and four joint species distribution models that incorporate species associations implicitly (multivariate random forest and multi-response artificial neural network) or explicitly (hierarchical modelling of species communities and generalized joint attribute model). In addition, we evaluated two approaches of data arrangement, species filtering and conditional prediction, to enhance the selected models. The model predictions were tested using cross validation based on empirical data collected from marine fisheries surveys, and the effects of community data were evaluated by comparing models for six selected rare species. The results demonstrated that the community data improved the predictions of rare species' distributions to certain extent but might also be unhelpful in some cases. The rare species could be appropriately predicted in terms of occurrence, whereas their abundance tended to be underestimated by most models. Species filtering and conditional predictions substantially benefited the predictive performances of multiple- and single-species models, respectively. We conclude that both the modelling algorithms and community data need to be carefully selected in order to deliver improvement in modelling rare species. The study highlights the opportunity and challenges to improve prediction of rare species' distribution by making the most of community data.

Potato common scab is an important soilborne disease worldwide that can significantly reduce the quality and economic values of potato. The disease is caused by multiple species of Streptomyces , which are not well controlled due to lack of effective strategies. Streptomyces galilaeus has been recently identified as a dominant species causing potato common scab in Inner Mongolia, China. This study was focused on screening and characterizing antagonists for biological control against pathogenic S. galilaeus . Bacterial strain PBSH9 was isolated from a potato tuber. PBSH9 was identified as a Streptomyces sp. on the basis of morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics, as well as DNA sequence analysis. PBSH9 inhibited S. galilaeus with a diameter of inhibitory zone of 19.8 mm on agar plates. The extracellular filtrate of PBSH9 also inhibited S. galilaeus growth with a diameter of inhibition zone of 10.0 mm. Furthermore, PBSH9 promoted potato sprouting and emergence. Disease control was up to 81.88% in greenhouse trials, and from 47.64 to 73.97% in 3-year field trials. Among the tested inoculation methods, seed treatment was more effective than soil drenching for PBSH9 application. PBSH9 not only effectively controlled potato common scab but also increased potato growth. Thus, it can be a potential candidate for biocontrol agent.

Spatial conservation prioritization concerns trade-offs between marine conservation and resource exploitation. This approach has been increasingly used to devise spatial management strategies for fisheries because of its simplicity in the optimization model and less data requirement compared to complex dynamic models. However, most of the prioritization is based on static models or algorithms; whose solutions need to be evaluated in a dynamic approach, considering the high uncertainty and opportunity costs associated with their implementation. We developed a framework that integrates species distribution models, spatial conservation prioritization tools and a general grid-based dynamic model (Grid-DM) to support evaluation of ecological and economic trade-offs of candidate conservation plans. The Grid-DM is spatially explicit and has a tactical management focus on single species. We applied the Grid-DM to small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) in Haizhou Bay, China and validated its spatial and temporal performances against historical observations. It was linked to a spatial conservation prioritization tool Marxan to illustrate how the model can be used for conservation strategy evaluation. The simulation model demonstrated effectiveness in capturing the spatio-temporal dynamics of the target fishery as well as the socio-ecological effects of conservation measures. We conclude that the model has the capability and flexibility to address various forms of uncertainties, simulate the dynamics of a targeted fishery, and to evaluate biological and socioeconomic impacts of management plans. Management procedures (MPs) based on data-limited methods (DLMs) recently developed to give management advices for data-limited stocks worldwide are scarce or yet to be implemented on freshwater species. In this study, case studies (CSs) were developed using length-frequency data (LFD) of common carp species harvested from Dianshan Lake to estimate life-history parameters from existing methods. These CSs were later used to examine their influences when tested with various MPs under scenarios when operating models (OMs) were subjected to observation and estimation uncertainties. The results after management strategy evaluation (MSE) was run for various defined OMs showed that three MPs emerged best for providing managing advice. For high yield to be maintained during short-term periods, MinlenLopt1 suggested the smallest length at full retention (sLFR) to be 42.11 cm; while Slotlim and matlenlim2 suggested that to maintain biomass and stable spawning biomass (SBMSY) and also avoid overfishing from occurring in this fishery, sLFR should be 56.1 cm. Values given by these MPs allowed the removal of species that spawned at least once. Also, life-history parameters derived from CS4 presented the best results, being more reliable in presenting better inputs for effective management of the said fishery.

Characterizing differences in key functional traits between simple-leaved (SL) and compound-leaved (CL) tree species can contribute to a better understanding of the adaptive significance of compound leaf form. In particular, this information may provide a mechanistic explanation to the long-proposed fast-growth hypothesis of CL tree species. Here, using five SL and five CL tree species co-occurring in a typical temperate forest of Northeast China, we tested whether higher hydraulic efficiency underlies potentially high photosynthetic capacity in CL species. We found that the CL species had significantly higher hydraulic conductance at the whole-branch level than the SL species (0.52 ± 0.13 vs 0.15 ± 0.04 × 10-4 kg m-2 s-1 Pa-1, P = 0.029). No significant difference in net photosynthetic rate (14.7 ± 2.43 vs 12.5 ± 2.05 μmol m-2 s-1, P = 0.511) was detected between these two groups, but this was largely due to the existence of one outlier species in each of the two functional groups. Scrutinization of the intragroup variations in functional traits revealed that distinctions of the two outlier species in wood type (ring- vs diffuse-porous) from their respective functional groups have likely contributed to their aberrant physiological performances. The potentially high photosynthetic capacity of CL species seems to require ring-porous wood to achieve high hydraulic efficiency. Due to its limitation on leaf photosynthetic capacity, diffuse-porous wood with lower hydraulic conductivity largely precludes its combination with the 'throw-away' strategy (i.e., annually replacing the stem-like rachises) of compound-leaved tree species, which intrinsically requires high carbon assimilation rate to compensate for their extra carbon losses. Our results for the first time show clear differentiation in hydraulic architecture and CO2 assimilation between sympatric SL and CL species, which contributes to the probing of the underlying mechanism responsible for the potential fast growth of trees with compound leaves., (© The Author(s) 2019. Ocean acidification (OA) has potential to affect marine phytoplankton in ways that are partly understood, but there is less knowledge about how it may alter the coupling to secondary producers. We investigated the effects of OA on phytoplankton primary production, and its trophic transfer to zooplankton in a subtropical eutrophic water (Wuyuan Bay, China) under present day (400 μatm) and projected end-of-century (1000 μatm) pCO 2 levels. Net primary production was unaffected, although OA did lead to small decreases in growth rates. OA had no measurable effect on micro-/mesozooplankton grazing rates. Elevated pCO 2 had no effect on phytoplankton fatty acid (FA) concentrations during exponential phase, but saturated FAs increased relative to the control during declining phase. FA profiles of mesozooplankton were unaffected. Our findings show that short-term exposure of plankton communities in eutrophic subtropical waters to projected end-of-century OA conditions has little effect on primary productivity and trophic linkage to mesozooplankton., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Cotton leaf spot (Alternaria macrospora) is a widespread disease that occurs in the main cotton-producing area of China. In managing this disease, a novel chitosan-based biopesticide, an amphiphilic N-alkyl-O-carboxymethyl chitosan derivative, was prepared. The product was selected from variations of chitosan with different molecular structures, which were obtained via a two-step reaction. First, carboxymethyl chitosans with varying molecular sizes were obtained by etherification with chloroacetic acid; then the carboxymethyl chitosan was alkylated with C4-C12 fatty aldehyde through a Schiff-base reaction. This procedure resulted in derivatives of amphiphilic N-alkyl-O-carboxymethyl chitosan, which showed strong antifungal activities against A. macrospora , and the efficacy was determined by its molecular structure.
