Aims: Lakeshore wetlands are global carbon (C) hotspots, but their role in C sequestration has been largely overlooked. The rhizosphere has a complex interaction of microbiota and metabolites, which plays an important role in wetland C cycling. This study aims to understand how the rhizospheric interactions affect harvested aboveground C and soil C of lakeshore wetlands in a subtropical region. Methods: An investigation of five lakeshore reed (Phragmites australis) wetlands at the similar latitudes of the Lower Yangtse Valley in China was carried out to explore the relationship of rhizospheric interactions with harvested aboveground C and soil C. The plant traits and soil physicochemical properties were determined due to their important role in affecting rhizosphere interactions. Results: Plant traits and soil physicochemical properties significantly differed among the sites, while aboveground C fixation did not significantly differ. The soil organic C (SOC) content of the topsoil was accounting for the majority of the soil total C at most sites, except for the wetland at the Yangtze River estuary with higher soil pH and conductivity, whose soil inorganic C (SIC) accounted for almost half. Bacterial community and metabolite composition were significantly partitioned across the region. Structural equation modeling revealed the rhizospheric interactions positively affected aboveground C and SOC, but negatively affected SIC. Their effects on soil C content were stronger than those on aboveground C fixation. Conclusions: The rhizosphere exhibited the direct and indirect effects on harvested aboveground C and soil C by altering microbial community structure and metabolite composition. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) belongs to the class of persistent organic pollutants widely distributed in the environment, and has the characteristics of high bioaccumulation and refractory degradation in organisms. To date, there are limited reports on the microbial degradation of PFOA. In this pursuit, the present study envisaged the screening of microbes capable of degrading PFOA from the soils of eight sites in Huaxi district of Guizhou province, China, using the enrichment culture. Sixteen bacterial isolates were obtained in total, and their growth curves were found to be unimodal or bimodal in PFOA-spiked MSM cultural solutions. Five isolates of them, viz. 4-a, 5-b, 6-a, 7-c and 8-a, were further selected for in-depth study of PFOA degradation, and it was found that all of isolates could increase the concentrations of fluoride ions in the cultural solutions. The five PFOA-degrading bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas sp. Obtained Pseudomonas resources would contribute to the studies on the degradation of PFOA by the facultative anaerobes. Background: Although glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common inherited disorder in the Chinese population, there is scarce evidence regarding the epidemiology, evolutionary origin, and malaria‐induced positive selection effects of G6PD‐deficient alleles in various Chinese ethnic populations. Methods: We performed a large population‐based screening (n = 15,690) to examine the impact of selection on human nucleotide diversity and to infer the evolutionary history of the most common deficiency alleles in Chinese populations. Results: The frequencies of G6PD deficiency ranged from 0% to 11.6% in 12 Chinese ethnic populations. A frequency map based on geographic information showed that G6PD deficiency was highly correlated with historical malaria prevalence in China and was affected by altitude and latitude. The five most frequently occurring G6PD gene variants were NM_001042351.3:c.1376G>T, NM_001042351.3:c.1388G>A, NM_001042351.3:c.95A>G, NM_001042351.3:c.1311T>C, and NM_001042351.3:c.1024C>T, which were distributed with ethnic features. A pathogenic but rarely reported variant site (NM_001042351.3:c.448G>A) was identified in this study. Bioinformatic analysis revealed a strong and recent positive selection targeting the NM_001042351.3:c.1376G>T allele that originated in the past 3125 to 3750 years and another selection targeting the NM_001042351.3:c.1388G>A allele that originated in the past 5000 to 6000 years. Additionally, both alleles originated from a single ancestor. Conclusion: These results indicate that malaria has had a major impact on the Chinese genome since the introduction of rice agriculture. Objective: The constant deterioration of the physical fitness of college students has been a popular topic in China, thus this research analyzes the potential health risk of inadequate physical activity among college students. Participants/methods: During the national student fitness test (NSFT) in 2012, 1500 students from Tsinghua University were recruited and asked to complete the international physical activity questionnaire. Finally, 1414 (94.3%) students completed the study. Results/conclusions: Compared with those students who actively participate in exercise, the risk of obesity in college students lacking exercise was 1.25 times higher. Likewise, the probability of failure in the grip strength test and the standing long jump was also higher, with increases of 2.39 fold and 1.39 fold, respectively. Moreover, the total score of physical fitness test was the same. Consequently, this study suggests that college students should exercise regularly to increase their physical fitness. Objective:Risk factors for chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) were not clearly established. The study was to investigate the etiological factors for CSOM from a population of Han adults in China. Methods:A case-control study was conducted at Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, School of Medicine in China. A total of 416 individuals participated in this study, which included 206 cases and 210 controls. Results:Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed male (OR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.21–0.83), BMI increasing (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.77–0.93), URTI (OR = 152.85; 95% CI: 34.11–684.93), smoke/passive smoke (OR = 7.11; 95% CI: 3.36–15.07), residential location (urban area) (OR = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.13–0.56), serum calcium increasing (OR = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01–0.71) were prime risk factors for CSOM. Univariate analysis revealed that low socioeconomic status (OR= 2.33; 95% CI: 1.57–3.45) and hepatitis B (OR = 4.90; 95% CI: 1.82–13.21) were risk factors together with the above variables. Conclusion:This study has identified several variables as risk factors for CSOM, suggesting better healthcare, living condition, as well as better nutrition might decrease the development of CSOM. Objectives: Thalassemia, the most common global monogenetic disorder, is highly prevalent in southern China. Epidemiological and molecular characterization of thalassemia is important for designing appropriate prevention strategies in high-risk areas, especially the border area of Guangxi-Yunnan-Guizhou province in southwestern China. Methods: We recruited 38812 reproductive age couples and screened them for thalassemia. Routine blood tests as well as hemoglobin components and levels were evaluated. In addition, suspected thalassemia were identified by gap polymerase chain reaction (Gap-PCR) and PCR-based reverse dot blot (PCR-RDB). Results: The overall prevalence of thalassemia was 26.76%. Specifically, incidences of α-thalassemia, β-thalassemia, and concurrent α- and β-thalassemia were 17.52%, 6.92%, and 2.32%, respectively. The diagnosed α-thalassemia anomalies were associated with six gene mutations and 25 genotypes. The β-thalassemia anomalies were associated with 12 gene mutations and 15 genotypes. Moreover, among the 1799 concurrent mutated α- and β-thalassemia genes, 95 different genotypes were identified. Couples in which both partners were positive for α-thalassemia and β-thalassemia isotypes were 8.80% and 2.08%, respectively. The proportion of couples at a risk of having children with thalassemia major or intermedia was high. Conclusions: This study elucidates on the prevalence and molecular characterization of thalassemia in the border area of Guangxi-Yunnan-Guizhou provinces. These findings provide valuable baseline data for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis, with the overarching goal of preventing and controlling severe thalassemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brassica juncea is one of a unique vegetable in China, its tumorous stem can be processed into pickle or as fresh vegetable. For a long time, early-bolting as a main factor affects yield and quality of B. juncea, which happens about 15% all year round. As plant specific blue light receptors, FKF1/LKP2 involved in photoperiod flowering. To analyze the expression levels of BjuFKF1/BjuLKP2 and screen their interaction proteins in B. juncea, qRT-PCR and yeast two hybrid assays were recruited. qRT-PCR assays found that the expression levels of BjuFKF1 and BjuLKP2 were up-regulated expressed under both white and blue light. When under different light, BjuFKF1 was significantly increased at vegetative growth stage, but decreased in flowers under blue light. For BjuLKP2, its expression levels did not show significant changes under different light treatment. To investigate interaction proteins, BjuFKF1 and BjuLKP2 were used as bait proteins, and nine potential proteins were screened from yeast library. Yeast two hybrid assays was recruited to further verify their interaction, the results showed that both BjuFKF1 and BjuLKP2 interacted with BjuCOL, BjuCOL3, BjuCOL5, BjuAP2, BjuAP2-1 and BjuSKP1f, only BjuLKP2 interacted with BjuSVP-1 and BjuCDF1 in vivo. In this study, BjuFKF1 and BjuLKP2 were up-regulated expressed under both white and blue light. Yeast two hybrid results verified that BjuFKF1 and BjuLKP2 interacted with six and eight of those nine proteins in vivo, respectively. Refracturing is an encouraging way to uplift gas flow rate and ultimate gas recovery from shale gas wells. A numerical model, considering the stimulated reservoir volume and multiscale gas transport, is applied to simulate the gas production from a refractured shale gas well. The model is verified against field data from a shale gas reservoir in Sichuan Basin. Two refracturing scenarios: refracturing through existing perforation clusters and refracturing through new perforation zones, are included in the simulation work. Three years after production is determined to be the optimum time for refracturing based on the evolution analysis of reservoir pressure, effective stress, fracture permeability, and gas recovery. The role that the hydraulic fracture conductivity and hydraulic fracture half-length play in gas production for different refracturing cases is explored. Pumping parameters of the refracturing job in Sichuan Basin are discussed combining with sensitivity analysis, and suggestions for pumping parameters optimization are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
