Leadership style impacts on the manner and frequency of feedback transmission. However, communication challenges between superiors and subordinates originate from cultural differences, which undermine the usefulness of feedback. The study tested leadership style's effect on self-efficacy through a moderated mediation approach, examined through the lens of the cross-cultural adaptation theory. Path analysis conducted on data from 281 foreign teachers in Chengdu, China, revealed that there is a positive effect of Chinese supervisors' leadership styles on foreign teacher's self-efficacy. Leadership style similarly has an influence on the nature of feedback. And the nature of feedback in turn mediates leadership style and self-efficacy. We establish in particular that transactional and transformational leadership styles, through the nature of feedback, influence self-efficacy of foreign teachers. Moreover, the association between the nature of feedback and self-efficacy is moderated by the perceived value of feedback. Employees' perceptions are also found to be crucial in determining the value of feedback. It is thus imperative for supervisors and managers working with foreigners as subordinates to figure out when and how to provide valuable feedback. We conclude with suggested areas for further research.

Pan evaporation (Epan) serves as a monitorable method for estimating potential evaporation, evapotranspiration, and reference crop evapotranspiration, providing crucial data and information for fields such as water resource management and agricultural irrigation. Based on the PenPan model, the monthly Epan was calculated over China during 1951-2021, resulting in an average R² of 0.93 6 0.045 and an RMSE of 21.48 6 6.06 mm month-1. The trend of Epan over time was characterized by an initial increase before 1961, followed by a decrease from 1961 to 1993, and a subsequent increase from 1994 to 2021. However, the sustained duration and magnitude of the decreasing trend led to an overall decreasing trend in the long-term dataset. To better understand the drivers of Epan trends, the Epan process was decomposed into radiative and aerodynamic components. While radiation was found to be the dominant component, its trend remained relatively stable over time. In contrast, the aerodynamic component, although smaller in proportion, exhibited larger fluctuations and played a crucial role in the trend of Epan. The primary influencing factors of the aerodynamic component were found to be wind speed and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Wind speed and VPD jointly promoted Epan before 1961, and the significant decrease in wind speed from 1961 to 1993 led to a decrease in Epan. From 1994 to 2021, the increase in VPD was found to be the main driver of the observed increase in Epan. Promoting clinicians’ knowledge sharing of appropriate health technology within the integrated care system (ICS) is of great vitality in bridging the technological gap between member institutions. However, the role of social networks in knowledge sharing of health technology is still largely unknown. To address this issue, the study aims to clarify the influence of clinicians’ social networks on knowledge sharing of health technology within the ICS. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the clinicians in the Alliance of Liver Disease Specialists in Fujian Province, China. Social network analysis was conducted using NetDraw and UCINET, and the quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) multiple regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of knowledge sharing of health technology. The results showed that the ICS played an insufficient role in promoting overall knowledge sharing, especially inter-institutional knowledge sharing. Trust, emotional support, material support, and cognitive proximity positively influenced knowledge sharing of health technology, while the frequency of interaction and relationship importance had a negative impact on it. The finding extended the research scope of social network theory to the field of healthcare and will bridge the evidence gap in the influence of the clinicians’ social networks on their knowledge sharing within the ICS, providing new ideas to boost knowledge sharing and diffusion of appropriate health technology. Land surface temperature (LST) is an essential variable for high-temperature prediction, drought monitoring, climate, and ecological environment research. Several recent studies reported that LST observations in China warmed much faster than surface air temperature (SAT), especially after 2002. Here we found that the abrupt change in daily LST was mainly due to the overestimation of LST values from the automatic recording thermometer under snow cover conditions. These inhomogeneity issues in LST data could result in wrong conclusions without appropriate correction. To address these issues, we proposed three machine learning models—multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), random forest (RF), and a novel simple tree-based method named extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)—for accurate prediction of daily LST using conventional meteorological data. Daily air temperature (maximum, minimum, mean), sunshine duration, precipitation, wind speed, relative humidity, daily solar radiation, and diurnal temperature range of 2185 stations over 1971–2002 from four regions of China were used to train and test the models. The results showed that the machine learning models, particularly XGBoost, outperformed other models in estimating daily LST. Based on LST data corrected by the XGBoost model, the dramatic increase in LST disappeared. The long-term trend for the new LST was estimated to be 0.32° ± 0.03°C decade−1 over 1971–2019, which is close to the trend in SAT (0.30° ± 0.03°C decade−1). This study corrected the inhomogeneities of daily LST in China, indicating the strong potential of machine learning models for improving estimation of LST and other surface climatic factors. Background: Hospital social responsibility is receiving increasing attention, especially in China where major changes to the healthcare system have taken place. This study examines how patients viewed hospital social responsibility in China and explore the factors that influenced patients' perception of hospital social responsibility.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, using a structured questionnaire, on a sample of 5385 patients from 48 public hospitals in three regions of China: Shanghai, Hainan, and Shaanxi. A multilevel regression model was employed to examine factors influencing patients' assessments of hospital social responsibility. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to estimate the proportion of variance in the dependent variables determined at the hospital level.Results: The scores for service quality, appropriateness, accessibility and professional ethics were positively associated with patients' assessments of hospital social responsibility. Older outpatients tended to give lower assessments, while inpatients in larger hospitals scored higher. After adjusted for the independent variables, the ICC rose from 0.182 to 0.313 for inpatients and from 0.162 to 0.263 for outpatients. The variance at the patient level was reduced by 51.5 and 48.6 %, respectively, for inpatients and outpatients. And the variance at the hospital level was reduced by 16.7 % for both groups.Conclusions: Some hospital and patient characteristics and their perceptions of service quality, appropriateness, accessibility and professional ethics were associated with their assessments of public hospital social responsibility. The differences were mainly determined at the patient level. The Rheocricotopus (Psilocricotopus) chalybeatus species group from China is reviewed. Three new species, R. (P.) brochus sp. n., R. (P.) rotundus sp. n. and R. (P.) serratus sp. n. are described as adult males. R. (P.) imperfectus Makarchenko & Makarchenko, 2005, R. (P.) robacki (Beck & Beck, 1964) and R. (P.) valgus Chaudhuri & Sinharay, 1983 are recorded from China for the first time and annotated. Monthly observed wind speed data at 597 weather stations and NCEP wind speed data at 10 m above surface were used to explore the temporal variations of the wind speed for 1961-2007 in China. The results indicate that the temporal variation of annual wind speed in China has experienced four phases: two relatively steady periods from 1961 to 1968 and 1969 to 1974 with a sharp step change in 1969, a statistically significant decline stage from 1974 to 1990s, and another relatively steady period from 1990s to 2007. Except for the sharp step in 1969 being caused by the changes of observation instrument, other breakpoints correspond well with the positive and negative phases of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation. In addition, four different temporal variation patterns of annual wind speed in China have been identified by using cluster analysis and their spatial distributions were also explored. Helicobacter pylori infection remains common in East Asia, though its prevalence is decreasing in Western countries. H. pylori-related atrophic gastritis (AG) may reduce the likelihood of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). We investigated the prevalence of H. pylori infection and AG and their association with endoscopic findings and symptom-defined GERD in Shanghai. A representative random sample of 3600 Shanghai residents aged 18-80 years was invited to complete a general information questionnaire and a Chinese version of the Reflux Disease Questionnaire, to provide blood samples for H. pylori serology and pepsinogen (PG) I/II assay (to detect AG, defined as PGI < 70 µg/L and/or PGI/PGII < 7), and to undergo endoscopy. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by multivariate logistic regression. A total of 1022 Shanghai residents underwent endoscopy and were valid for inclusion in the study. Of these, 71.7% tested positive for H. pylori, 63.8% had AG and 30.5% had moderate/severe AG (PGI < 50 µg/L and/or PGI/PGII < 5). Helicobacter pylori infection was equally common in all age groups. Severity of AG increased with age in women. Reflux esophagitis was inversely associated with AG (OR, 0.23 [CI, 0.09-0.55] for moderate/severe AG compared with no H. pylori or gastritis). However, symptom-defined GERD showed no clear association with AG. Helicobacter pylori infection and AG are very common in Shanghai, and the infection is acquired early in life. OBJECTIVES:Complications of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) are common in China. Population-based estimates of the prevalence of PUD are needed to quantify and characterize the population at risk of these complications.METHODS:As part of a large epidemiological study, 3,600 randomly selected residents of Shanghai (aged 18-80 years) were asked to undergo endoscopy and to provide blood samples for Helicobacter pylori serology. All participants also completed a general information questionnaire and Chinese versions of the reflux disease questionnaire (RDQ) and Rome II questionnaire. Associations between PUD and other factors were analyzed using a multiple logistic regression model.RESULTS:In total, 3,153 individuals (87.6%) completed the survey. All underwent blood tests, and 1,030 patients (32.7%) agreed to undergo endoscopy. Results from 1,022 patients were suitable for analysis. In all, 176 participants (17.2%) had PUD (62 with gastric ulcer; 136 with duodenal ulcer). The prevalence of H. pylori infection was 73.3% in the total population and 92.6% among those with PUD. H. pylori infection was associated with the presence of PUD (odds ratio (OR), 6.77; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.85-16.10). The majority (72.2%) of individuals with PUD had none of the upper gastrointestinal symptoms assessed by the RDQ. PUD was not significantly associated with symptom-defined gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (OR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.32-2.03), reflux esophagitis (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 0.76-2.79) or dyspepsia (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 0.94-3.04).CONCLUSIONS:The prevalence of endoscopically confirmed PUD in this Shanghai population (17.2%) is substantially higher than in Western populations (4.1%). Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease imposes a significant burden of illness in Western populations. However, data on the impact of reflux symptoms on daily life in Asian populations are scarce. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of GERD (defined on the basis of symptoms) on health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) in individuals from five regions in China, as part of the Systematic Investigation of Gastrointestinal Diseases in China (SILC) study. Methods: In total, 18 000 residents were randomly selected from across five regions of China and asked to complete a general information questionnaire and a Chinese version of the Reflux Disease Questionnaire (RDQ). A randomly selected subsample of one-fifth of subjects (20% from each region) completed Chinese versions of the 36-item self-administered (SF-36) questionnaire and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire. Reflux symptoms were defined as the presence of heartburn and/or regurgitation. Symptom-defined GERD was diagnosed as mild heartburn and/or regurgitation ≥2 days per week, or moderate/severe heartburn and/or regurgitation ≥1 day a week, based on the Montreal Definition of GERD for population-based studies. Results: The response rate was 89.4% for the total sample (16 091/18 000), and for the 20% subsample (3219/ 3600). Meaningful impairment was observed in all 8 SF-36 dimensions in participants with symptom-defined GERD, in 7 of the 8 SF-36 dimensions in participants with troublesome reflux symptoms, and in 6 of the 8 SF-36 dimensions in participants with reflux symptoms below the threshold for symptom-defined GERD. Meaningful daytime sleepiness was also observed in each of these groups. The proportion of individuals reporting troublesome symptoms increased as reflux symptom frequency and severity approached the threshold for symptom-defined GERD, and this was associated with concomitant decreases in all HRQoL measures. Troublesome symptoms were reported by 68.2% (75/110) of individuals with symptom-defined GERD. Conclusions: GERD diagnosed using symptom/frequency criteria (recommended for population-based studies), or based on troublesome reflux symptoms (recommended for the clinic), is associated with significantly impaired HRQoL in Chinese individuals. However, patient groups identified using these definitions do not overlap completely, suggesting that they capture slightly different, though clinically relevant, GERD populations. Background: The epidemiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has yet to be investigated using the symptomatic threshold criteria recommended by the Montreal Definition. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of symptom-defined GERD across five regions of China, and to investigate variables associated with GERD. Methods: A representative sample of 18 000 adults (aged 18-80 years) were selected equally from rural and urban areas in each region (n = 1800). According to the Montreal Definition, GERD is present when mild symptoms of heartburn and/or regurgitation occur on ≥2 days a week, or moderate-to-severe symptoms of heartburn and/or regurgitation occur on ≥1 day a week. Results: In total, 16 091 participants completed the survey (response rate: 89.4%) and 16 078 responses were suitable for analysis. Applying the Montreal criteria, the prevalence of symptom-defined GERD was 3.1% and varied significantly (p < 0.001) among the five regions (from 1.7% in Guangzhou to 5.1% in Wuhan) and between rural and urban populations (3.8% vs 2.4%). Factors significantly associated with GERD included living in a rural area and a family history of gastrointestinal diseases. Summary  Following the increasing investment on basic research in China, the outputs of basic research have been greatly enhanced. In this paper, the relative efficiency of investments in basic research is analyzed by adopting statistical regressions and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Preliminary results show that injected investment seems to be the main driving force for the increased basic research outputs in China. It is found that there were significant improvements on overall efficiency from 1991 to 1996, although this trend has noticeably slowed down since 1996. The contamination of organochlorine pesticides hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and their eco-environmental assessment in surface sediments from Lake Dongting, the second-largest freshwater lake in China, were studied. Concentrations of ∑HCH (=α-HCH + β-HCH + γ-HCH +δ-HCH) were 0.21--9.59 ng/g dry weight and those of ∑ DDT = p,p'-DDD+p,p'-DDE+o,p'-DDT+p,p'-DDT) ranged from under detectable limit to 10.15 ng/g dry weight. The ratios of α-HCH to γ-HCH were above 7 at most sampling sites while no or a small amount of β-HCH were found at all sites, suggesting the degradation of HCH used in the history and possibly current use of HCH in the region. The low ratios (below 2.0 in most cases) of (p,p'-DDE+p,p'-DDD) to p,p'-DDT and high levels of individual isomers of DDT at some sites also suggested that there have still been fresh inputs of DDT into Lake Dongting. Through the comparison between concentrations of HCH and DDT residues in sediments of Lake Dongting and those from other places in China and also from the results of our eco-environmental assessment, it can be concluded that Lake Dongting is the water body with high contamination of both HCH and DDT in its sediments in comparison with other water bodies in China. The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were determined in workplace air from eight secondary nonferrous metal processing plants to investigate occupational exposure to these toxic compounds. The total estimated daily intakes of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs for workers by inhalation in the workplace were in the range of 0.15-9.91 and 0.13-8.59 pg of WHO-TEQ/kg of body weight (bw) for moderate and light activities, respectively. The daily inhalation doses for workers in the workplaces of three investigated plants exceeded the tolerable daily intake recommended by the World Health Organization. These results indicate that the risk of occupational exposure to dioxins by inhalation in the workplace of plants investigated was considerably high. For PCNs, the daily inhalation doses for workers in the workplace were in the range of 0.005-4.46 and 0.004-3.87 pg of TEQ/kg of bw for moderate and light activities, respectively, which were lower than those of dioxins. To identify the source of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, and PCNs in workplace air, their homologue profiles were compared with those in stack gas from the plants investigated. The coking process is considered to be a potential source of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UP-POPs). However, intensive studies on the emission of UP-POPs from the coking industry are still very scarce. Emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HxCBz), and pentachlorobenzene (PeCBz) covered under the Stockholm Convention were investigated for the coking process in this study. Stack gases from some typical coke plants in China were collected and analyzed to estimate the emission of UP-POPs from the coking industry. Emission factors of 28.9 ng WHO-TEQ tonne-1 for PCDD/Fs, 1.7 ng WHO-TEQ tonne-1 for dl-PCBs, 596 ng tonne-1 for HxCBz, and 680 ng tonne-1 for PeCBz were derived based on the investigated data. The annual emissions from the global coking industry were estimated to be 15.8 g WHO-TEQ for PCDD/Fs, 0.93 g WHO-TEQ for dl-PCBs, 333 g for HxCBz, and 379 g for PeCBz, respectively (reference year 2007). According to the distribution of PCDD/Fs, we argued for the de novo synthesis to be the major pathway of PCDD/F formation. With regard to the characteristics of dl-PCBs, the most abundant congener was CB-118, and the most dominant contributor to the total WHO-TEQ of dl-PCBs was CB-126. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Secondary nonferrous production is addressed as one of the potential sources of the unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (UP-POPs) due to the impurity of raw material. Although there are inventories of dioxin emissions from secondary nonferrous metallurgical facilities, release inventories of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are scarce. This study selected typical secondary copper, aluminum, zinc, and lead plants to investigate the emissions of PCNs in secondary nonferrous production in China. The toxic equivalency (TEQ) emission factor for PCNs released to the environment is highest for secondary copper production, at 428.4 ng TEQ t-1, followed by secondary aluminum, zinc, and lead production, at 142.8, 125.7, and 20.1 ng TEQ t-1, respectively. PCNs released in secondary copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc production in China are estimated to be 0.86, 0.39, 0.009, and 0.01 g TEQ a-1, respectively. Analysis of stack gas emission from secondary nonferrous production revealed that less-chlorinated PCNs are the dominant homologues, with mono- to tri-CNs making the most important contributions to the concentration.
