A new species belonging to the genus Parathalestris Brady & Robertson, 1873 was identified and described here based on samples recently collected from a survey on fouling organisms at the Zhonggang wharf in Qingdao, China. The new species differs from its congeners in the following characteristics: caudal rami 2.0 times longer than wide, with bulbous setae II and setae III of caudal ramus issuing terminally and laterodistally, respectively; exopod of antenna two-segmented, with two setae on first segment and four setae on second one;maxilla with two bipinnate setae on proximal endite, and three spinulose setae on middle and distal endites; basis of maxilliped with concave inner edge; P1 exopod and endopod approximately same length, enp-1 about 6.7 times as long as greatest width, with inner seta reaching proximal 2/3 of segment; baseoendopod and exopod of female P5 with transversal rows of spinules on its surface, exopod bearing six marginal setae; male P1 carrying an inner curved spine on basis; exopod of male P5 bearing six elements. The DNA barcode (COI) sequence of the new species was obtained and submitted to GenBank. This is the first report of Parathalestris from the China Seas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are frequently tracked in water environments worldwide. As a typical class of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs), PAEs posed adverse effects on aquatic organisms at low concentration. Thus, they have attracted wide attention in recent years. In the present study, the concentrations of seven typical PAEs from 30 sampling sites in Baiyangdian Lake were measured, and the environmental exposure data of PAEs were gathered in typical rivers in China. Then, based on the aquatic life criteria (ALCs) derived from the reproductive toxicity data of aquatic organisms, two risk assessment methods, including hazard quotient (HQ) and probabilistic ecological risk assessment (PERA), were adopted to evaluate the ecological risks of PAEs in water. The sediment quality criteria (SQCs) of DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP and DEP were deduced based on the equilibrium partitioning method. Combined with the gathered environmental exposure data of seven PAEs in sediments from typical rivers in China, the ecological risk assessments of five PAEs in sediment were conducted only by the HQ method. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that in terms of water, DBP and DIBP posed low risk, while the risk of DEHP in Baiyangdian Lake cannot be ignored and should receive attention. In typical rivers in China, BBP and DEP posed no risk, while DIBP and DBP posed potential risk. Meanwhile, DEHP posed a high ecological risk. As far as sediment is concerned, DBP posed a high risk in some typical rivers in China, and the other rivers had medium risk. DEHP posed a high risk only in a few rivers and low to medium risk in others. Highlights • Nutrients in Guanting reservoir and Baiyangdian lake were mainly from agriculture in 2012. • Between 2012 and 2050 nutrient pollution in the lake and reservoir may double. • Current environmental policies in China may reduce pollution to below 2012 levels. • To further improve water in Guanting, pollution control in agriculture is needed. • To further improve water in Baiyangdian, reduced pollution from sewage in Xiong'an surrounding areas is needed. Abstract Hai He basin is located in the densely populated North China Plain that is providing food to more than 100 million people. The fast developing agriculture and urbanization in Hai He basin have resulted in discharging nutrient-rich wastewater into lakes and reservoirs, leading to eutrophication and water scarcity such as in Guanting reservoir and Baiyangdian lake. In this study we analyzed future trends in nutrient inputs into Guanting reservoir and Baiyangdian lake by applying the MARINA (M odel to A ssess R iver I nputs of N utrients to se A s) model. We analyzed trends between 2012 and 2050 for a business-as-usual scenario (SSP3) and a scenario based on Current Environmental Policies (CEP). In addition, we assessed future impacts of two important events on river export of nutrients: the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in the Guanting basin (OLY scenario), and the development of Xiong'an in the Baiyangdian basin (URB scenario). Finally, we assumed implementation of advanced technologies to reduce nutrients in rivers (OLY+ and URB+). Our study has five main findings. First, nutrients in Guanting reservoir and Baiyangdian lake were mainly from agriculture in 2012. Second, nutrient export doubles between 2012 and 2050 in SSP3. Third, effective implementation of current environmental policies could reduce the future pollution to levels below that in 2012. Fourth, improved sewage systems associated with the 2022 Winter Olympic Games could not reduce nutrient pollution effectively in Guanting reservoir, indicating that reducing nutrient losses from agriculture may be more effective to improve water quality than urban waste water treatment. Fifth, urbanization in the Baiyangdian basin may increase river export of nutrients to the lake by 28-43% compared to the CEP scenario (URB scenario). Highly effective waste treatment is needed not only in Xiong'an but also in surrounding areas to ensure the availability of clean water (URB+ scenario). Our results could improve our understanding of nutrient management for specific lakes and reservoirs, and highly relevant for policy making for effective environmental policies. A new species belonging to the genus Porirualia Huys & Mu, 2021 was identified and described here based on samples collected from No. 1 Bathing Beach, Qingdao, China. The new species differs from Porirualia pyriformis mainly in the following characteristics: P3 and P4 exp-3 with three inner setae (two inner setae in P. pyriformis), ratio of length to maximum width of female P5 3.83 (3.25 in P. pyriformis). The new species differs from Porirualia megarostrum by the characters including rostrum reaching to distal margin of third segment of antennule (reaching to distal margin of fifth segment of antennule in P. megarostrum), ratio of length to maximum width of female P5 3.83 (2.2 in P. megarostrum); male P2 and P3 two-segmented (three-segmented in P. megarostrum); male P5 bearing five elements (six in P. megarostrum). This is the first report of the genus Porirualia from the China Seas. The DNA barcode (COI) sequence of the new species was obtained and submitted to GenBank (PP761118), which is the first submission of COI sequence of the family Parastenheliidae to GenBank.

As a kind of endocrine disruptor compounds, the presence of phthalate esters (PAEs) has become a global concern. In this study, the pollution levels and spatial distribution of sixteen PAEs were investigated. Their potential sources and eco-environmental health risk were discussed in Baiyang Lake and its upstream rivers during different periods. PAEs were detected in all of samples, ranging from 1215 to 3014 ng·L -1 in October 2020 and 1384 to 3399 ng·L -1 in May 2021. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) were the predominant monomers, with a detection rate of 100% and the highest concentrations in the overlying water. Restricted by multiple factors, the spatial distribution difference between Baiyang Lake and its upstream rivers in October was more significant than in May. The source apportionment revealed that agricultural cultivation and disorderly use and disposal of plastic products were the primary factors for the contamination. The human health risk assessment indicated that eight PAE congeners did not pose significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic harms to males, females and children. However, the ecological risks of DBP, DIBP and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate to algae, crustaceans and fish species were moderate or high-risk levels. This study provides an appropriate dataset for the assessment of the pollution of PEs to the water ecosystem affected by anthropogenic activities.
