Gender-math stereotypes are thought to be a threat for women's mathematical performance, however, the mechanism of gender stereotype affecting mathematics achievement is not clear. The current study aimed to explore the different role of attitude towards mathematics and math self-concept in the relationship between gender-math stereotypes and mathematical performance for men and women. A total of 297 Chinese college students participated in our survey. Results showed that math self-concept played a suppressing effect on the relationship between gender-math stereotypes and women's mathematical performance, while attitude had no mediating role in the relationship between gender stereotypes and mathematical performance. However, gender-math stereotypes could not directly predict men's mathematical performance, nor could it predict through math self-concept or attitude towards mathematics.

Background: Domesticated pigs serve as an ideal animal model for biomedical research and also provide the majority of meat for human consumption in China. Porcine intramuscular fat content associates with human health and diseases and is essential in pork quality. The molecular mechanisms controlling lipid metabolism and intramuscular fat accretion across tissues in pigs, and how these changes in response to pig breeds, remain largely unknown. Results: We surveyed the tissue-resident cell types of the porcine jejunum, colon, liver, and longissimus dorsi muscle between Lantang and Landrace breeds by single-cell RNA sequencing. Combining lipidomics and metagenomics approaches, we also characterized gene signatures and determined key discriminating markers of lipid digestibility, absorption, conversion, and deposition across tissues in two pig breeds. In Landrace, lean-meat swine mainly exhibited breed-specific advantages in lipid absorption and oxidation for energy supply in small and large intestinal epitheliums, nascent high-density lipoprotein synthesis for reverse cholesterol transport in enterocytes and hepatocytes, bile acid formation, and secretion for fat emulsification in hepatocytes, as well as intestinal-microbiota gene expression involved in lipid accumulation product. In Lantang, obese-meat swine showed a higher synthesis capacity of chylomicrons responsible for high serum triacylglycerol levels in small intestinal epitheliums, the predominant characteristics of lipid absorption in muscle tissue, and greater intramuscular adipcytogenesis potentials from muscular fibro-adipogenic progenitor subpopulation. Background: Studies have shown that the wet suction technique in endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) generates better histological diagnostic accuracy and specimen quality than the dry suction technique. However, conclusions of wet suction on the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) are still controversial. Besides, the optimal number of passes for EUS-FNB has not been determined. We aimed to design a large multicenter randomized trial to compare the diagnostic accuracy of dry suction versus wet suction technique in solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs) using 22G Franseen needles and determine the optimal number of passes required for EUS-FNB. Methods: This is a multi-center open-label, randomized controlled non-inferiority trial with two parallel groups. Two hundred patients with SPLs will undergo EUS-FNB using 22G Franseen needles in 4 tertiary hospitals in China and will be randomly assigned to the dry suction group and wet suction group in a ratio of 1:1. The primary endpoint is diagnostic accuracy. Secondary endpoints include the optimal number of needle passes, sensitivity, specificity, specimen quality, cytological diagnoses, time of the procedure, and incidence of complications. Discussion: This study has been designed to determine (i) whether EUS-FNB using 22G Franseen needle with dry suction is non-inferior to wet suction in terms of diagnostic accuracy and (ii) the optimal number of passes during EUS-FNB of SPLs using 22G Franseen needle. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the clinicopathologic characteristics of ocular surface and orbit tumors in the Southeast of China and explore the method to differentiate the benign and malignant masses. Materials and methods: 3468 patients undergoing mass resection from January 2015 to December 2020 were selected as observation subjects and were classified into benign and malignant masses according to postoperative pathology. The clinicopathologic characteristics were collected, including gender, age, pathological tissue signs, and pathological signs. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis of independent risk factors of malignant mass was applied to establish a diagnostic model and the efficacy was evaluated by the subject working characteristics (ROC) curve. Results: Benign tumors accounted for 91.5% of all cases, and malignant tumors accounted for 8.5%. The most common ocular benign tumors were nevi (24.2%), granuloma (17.1%), and cysts (16.4%). The most common ocular malignant tumors were malignant lymphoma (32.1%) and Basal cell carcinoma (20.2%). As for the histologic origin, melanocytic origin was on the list with 819 (23.6%), mesenchymal 661 (19.1%), epithelial 568 (16.3%), cystic 521 (15.0%), skin adnexal 110 (3.1%), lymphoid 94 (2.8%), and Neural 25(0.8%). Based on the gender, age, tumor location, and the pathological tissue image feature (including differentiation, structural atypia, covering epithelial, keratosis, nest structure/distribution, nuclear atypia, cytoplasmic change and nuclear division), the diagnostic model had predictive value to differentiate the benign and malignant masses. Conclusion: Most ocular surface and orbit tumors are benign. Tumor diagnosis is relative to the patient's age, gender, tumor location, and pathologic characteristics. A vaccine booster to maintain high antibody levels and provide effective protection against COVID-19 has been recommended. However, little is known about the safety of a booster for different vaccines. We conducted a parallel controlled prospective study to compare the safety of a booster usingfour common vaccines in China. In total, 320 eligible participants who had received two doses of an inactivated vaccine were equally allocated to receive a booster of the same vaccine (Group A), a different inactivated vaccine (Group B), an adenovirus type-5 vectored vaccine (Group C), or a protein subunit vaccine (Group D). A higher risk of adverse reactions, observed up to 28 days after injection, was found in Groups C and D, compared to Group A, with odds ratios (OR) of 11.63 (95% confidence interval (CI): 4.22–32.05) and 4.38 (1.53–12.56), respectively. Recipients in Group C were more likely to report ≥two reactions (OR = 29.18, 95% CI: 3.70–229.82), and had a higher risk of injection site pain, dizziness, and fatigue. A gender and age disparity in the risk of adverse reactions was identified. Despite the majority of reactions being mild, heterologous booster strategies do increase the risk of adverse reactions, relative to homologous boosters, in subjects who have had two doses of inactive vaccine. Urine-based formaldehyde has been reported to be a potential biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is a lack of research about the correlation between urine formaldehyde and cognitive abilities in the clinical spectrum of AD, especially the preclinical period. The relationship of urine formaldehyde with APOE genotype, brain Aβ status and plasma pathological markers in AD are also not clear. This study intends to explore the correlation between urine formaldehyde and cognitive abilities throughout the AD continuum, to evaluate the role of APOE genotype and Aβ accumulation on urine formaldehyde, and further to clarify the relationship between urine formaldehyde level and AD plasma pathological markers. We recruited 72 cognitively normal controls (NC), 110 subjective cognitive decline (SCD), 140 objectively defined subtle cognitive decline (Obj-SCD), 171 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 136 AD dementia participants. Next, we collected the data of clinical materials, neuropsychological examination, APOE genotyping, urine formaldehyde concentration, 18F-florbetapir PET imaging and plasma biomarkers. Compared with NC, Obj-SCD and MCI groups, the level of urine formaldehyde was found to be significantly upregulated in SCD group. In addition, the level of urine formaldehyde was significantly higher in AD group compared to both NC and MCI groups. Further subgroup analysis showed that, the level of urine formaldehyde was higher in APOE ε4+ subgroup compared to APOE ε4– subgroup in both NC and AD groups. There was no difference in urine formaldehyde level between the brain Aβ+ subgroup and Aβ– subgroup in each group. In addition, regression analysis showed urine formaldehyde level was correlated with gender, plasma Aβ42 and p-Tau181/T-tau. The dynamic change of urine formaldehyde in the AD continuum could be used as a potential biomarker, and combined with comprehensive cognitive evaluation could become a useful method to distinguish SCD from NC and Obj-SCD, and to distinguish MCI from AD. When a major, sudden infectious disease occurs, people tend to react emotionally and display reactions such as tension, anxiety, fear, depression, and somatization symptoms. Social media played a substantial awareness role in developing countries during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to analyze public opinion regarding COVID-19 and to explore the trajectory of psychological status and online public reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic by examining online content from Weibo in China. This study consisted of three steps: first, Weibo posts created during the pandemic were collected and preprocessed on a large scale; second, public sentiment orientation was classified as "optimistic/pessimistic/neutral" orientation via natural language processing and manual determination procedures; and third, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted to reveal the trajectory of public psychological status and online public reactions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Public psychological status differed in different periods of the pandemic (from December 2019 to May 2020). The newly confirmed cases had an almost 1-month lagged effect on public psychological status. Among the 15 events with high impact indexes or related to government decisions, there were 10 optimism orientation > pessimism orientation (OP) events (2/3) and 5 pessimism orientation > optimism orientation (PO) events (1/3). Among the top two OP events, the high-frequency words were "race against time" and "support," while in the top two PO events, the high-frequency words were "irrationally purchase" and "pass away." We proposed a hypothesis that people developed negative self-perception when they received PO events, but their cognition was developed by how these external stimuli were processed and evaluated. These results offer implications for public health policymakers on understanding public psychological status from social media. This study demonstrates the benefits of promoting psychological healthcare and hygiene activity in the early period and improving risk perception for the public based on public opinion and the coping abilities of people. Health managers should focus on disseminating socially oriented strategies to improve the policy literacy of Internet users, thereby facilitating the disease prevention work for the COVID-19 pandemic and other major public events. A 128-channel positron detection system will be constructed at Experimental Muon Source (EMuS) of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) to conduct muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance ($\mu $ SR) measurements. Each detector channel consists of a scintillator, a light guide, and a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The long light guide is bent to an “L” shape to propagate optical photons from the scintillator to the PMT. A series of Geant4 simulations and experiments has been performed to optimize the light collection performance of the L-bent detector. Geometry deformation induced by the bending process has been well modeled. Simulation results agree with the experimental tests. Accordingly, a novel hybrid wrapping method (scintillator with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and light guide with aluminum tape) has been developed to improve the amplitude of detector signals greatly. Compared to wrapping the detector with merely PTFE tapes or aluminum tapes, this method leads to an enhancement in light collection efficiency of 73% or 14%, respectively. Two optimally manufactured prototype detectors using the novel wrapping method have been tested at the ISIS Muon Facility. The beam tests demonstrated that the L-bent detectors can precisely measure the behavior of muon spins inside samples. Background: The psychometric properties of the simplified Chinese version of the Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE) have not been assessed. Therefore, we aimed to assess its validity, reliability, and responsiveness.Patients and Methods: A Chinese version of the PRO-CTCAE and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) were distributed to 1580 patients from four cancer hospitals in China. Validity assessments included construct validity, measured by Pearson's correlations and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and known-groups validity, measured by t-tests. The assessment of reliability included internal consistency, measured by Cronbach's ɑ, and test-retest reliability, measured by the intraclass correlation (ICC). Responsiveness was assessed by standardized response means (SRMs).Results: Data from 1555 patients who completed the instruments were analyzed. The correlations were high between PRO-CTCAE items and parallel QLQ-C30 symptom scales (r > 0.60, p < 0.001), except for fatigue (severity: r = 0.49). Moreover, CFA showed the PRO-CTCAE structure was a good fit with the data (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.046). Known-groups validity was also confirmed. Cronbach's ɑ of all item clusters were greater than 0.9 and the median test-retest reliability coefficients of the 38 items were 0.85 (range = 0.71-0.91). In addition, the SRMs of PRO-CTCAE items were greater than 0.8, indicating strong responsiveness.Conclusion: The simplified Chinese version of the PRO-CTCAE showed good reliability, validity, and responsiveness. Background: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes an immense disease burden. Although public health countermeasures effectively controlled the epidemic in China, non-pharmaceutical interventions can neither be maintained indefinitely nor conveniently implemented globally. Vaccination is mainly used to prevent COVID-19, and most current antiviral treatment evaluations focus on clinical efficacy. Therefore, we conducted population-based simulations to assess antiviral treatment effectiveness among different age groups based on its clinical efficacy. Methods: We collected COVID-19 data of Wuhan City from published literature and established a database (from 2 December 2019 to 16 March 2020). We developed an age-specific model to evaluate the effectiveness of antiviral treatment in patients with COVID-19. Efficacy was divided into three types: (1) viral activity reduction, reflected as transmission rate decrease [reduction was set as v (0–0.8) to simulate hypothetical antiviral treatments]; (2) reduction in the duration time from symptom onset to patient recovery/removal, reflected as a 1/γ decrease (reduction was set as 1–3 days to simulate hypothetical or real-life antiviral treatments, and the time of asymptomatic was reduced by the same proportion); (3) fatality rate reduction in severely ill patients (fc) [reduction (z) was set as 0.3 to simulate real-life antiviral treatments]. The population was divided into four age groups (groups 1, 2, 3 and 4), which included those aged ≤ 14; 15–44; 45–64; and ≥ 65 years, respectively. Evaluation indices were based on outbreak duration, cumulative number of cases, total attack rate (TAR), peak date, number of peak cases, and case fatality rate (f). Results: Comparing the simulation results of combination and single medication therapy s, all four age groups showed better results with combination medication. When 1/γ = 2 and v = 0.4, age group 2 had the highest TAR reduction rate (98.48%, 56.01–0.85%). When 1/γ = 2, z = 0.3, and v = 0.1, age group 1 had the highest reduction rate of f (83.08%, 0.71–0.12%). Conclusions: Antiviral treatments are more effective in COVID-19 transmission control than in mortality reduction. Overall, antiviral treatments were more effective in younger age groups, while older age groups showed higher COVID-19 prevalence and mortality. Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a global infectious disease; particularly, it has a high disease burden in China. This study was aimed to explore the temporal and spatial distribution of the disease by analyzing its epidemiological characteristics, and to calculate the early warning signals of HFMD by using a logistic differential equation (LDE) model. Methods: This study included datasets of HFMD cases reported in seven regions in Mainland China. The early warning time (week) was calculated using the LDE model with the key parameters estimated by fitting with the data. Two key time points, "epidemic acceleration week (EAW)" and "recommended warning week (RWW)", were calculated to show the early warning time. Results: The mean annual incidence of HFMD cases per 100,000 per year was 218, 360, 223, 124, and 359 in Hunan Province, Shenzhen City, Xiamen City, Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunxiao County across the southern regions, respectively and 60 and 34 in Jilin Province and Longde County across the northern regions, respectively. The LDE model fitted well with the reported data (R2 > 0.65, P < 0.001). Distinct temporal patterns were found across geographical regions: two early warning signals emerged in spring and autumn every year across southern regions while one early warning signals in summer every year across northern regions. Conclusions: The disease burden of HFMD in China is still high, with more cases occurring in the southern regions. The early warning of HFMD across the seven regions is heterogeneous. In the northern regions, it has a high incidence during summer and peaks in June every year; in the southern regions, it has two waves every year with the first wave during spring spreading faster than the second wave during autumn. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of induction chemotherapy (IC) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with moderate-risk treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).Methods: We retrospectively assessed 506 patients with T1-2N1M0 or T3-4N0-1M0 NPC (according to the 2010 UICC/AJCC staging system) who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) with or without IC at a single center in China between 2005 and 2010. Survival outcomes were compared between the IC + CCRT and CCRT groups using the Kaplan-Meier method, Log-rank test and a Cox regression model.Results: Among the 506 patients, CCRT alone resulted in equivalent overall survival (86.8% vs 88.5%, p=0.661), progression-free survival (79.6% vs 79.6%, p=0.756), locoregional relapse-free survival (90.2% vs 87.0%, p=0.364) and distant metastasis-free survival (88.0% vs 89.8%, p=0.407) to IC plus CCRT. In multivariate analysis, IC did not lower the risk of death (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.46-1.25, p=0.278), progression (HR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51-1.19, p=0.244), locoregional relapse (HR 1.06, 95% CI 0.81-1.42, p=0.651) or distant metastasis (HR 0.66, 95% CI 0.38-1.15, p=0.140) in the entire cohort; similar results were obtained in stratified analysis based on N category (N0 vs N1) and EBV DNA (< vs ≥4000 copies/mL).Conclusion: Addition of IC to CCRT does not improve survival outcomes in moderate-risk NPC; the use of IC should be carefully considered in these patients, though additional prospective trials are warranted to confirm the conclusions of this study. Cigarette smoking is associated with the development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC); however, the influence of smoking on survival of patients with ESCC receiving radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy, has remained elusive. The present study retrospectively analyzed 479 patients with ESCC from southern China who were categorized based on their smoking history (never, previous or current). To consider the cumulative effect of smoking, the number of pack years (PYs) was used as a representative variable. Associations between cigarette smoking and survival were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards model. Among the 497 patients, 308 (64.3%) had reported a history of cigarette smoking. The 5-year overall survival for patients void of a smoking history, former smokers and current smokers was 50.9, 27.0 and 34.3%, respectively. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for previous and current smoking vs. no smoking history were 1.57 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06–2.32] and 3.01 (95% CI, 1.15–7.86), respectively. Heavy smokers with a high number of PYs had a HR for death of 1.75 (95% CI, 1.28–2.41) compared with light smokers. In the cohort of 407 patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy/three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, similarly significant results were obtained. In conclusion, cigarette smoking is an independent and poor prognostic factor for patients with ESCC treated with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. It is associated with an increased risk of death, and the risk increases with the increase in PYs. This result may help to manage tobacco use among patients with ESCC. The smoking status should be taken into consideration in prospective studies on ESCC. More frequent follow-ups are recommended for those patients with ESCC with a history of smoking. Aim: This cross-sectional study was designed to characterize by age the ratios of limb segments length to height and extremities-trunk ratio and body proportions of southern Chinese children.Methods: Data were collected from students (n = 4715) from five school, aged 6-17 years, in the city of Chongqing. Their standing height, sitting height, arm span, forearm length, upper arm length, leg length, lower leg length, and ratios of extremities to trunk length were determined.Results: Sitting height, forearm length, upper arm length, arm span, and lower leg length were highly correlated with standing height (r > 0.9; P < 0.05). The ratio of extremities to trunk increased till about 13 years of age for both genders.Conclusions: The length of extremities and their ratio to sitting height reflect regular changes of growth in Chinese children as their age, and limb segments length is highly correlated with height. In China, farmers employed in non-farm work have become important socio-economic actors, but few studies have examined the farmers' perspective in making their work location choices. Based on "push-pull" migration theory, this paper utilizes sectional data from a 2013 survey of farmers in China's Three Gorges Reservoir area to empirically analyze the factors influencing migrant workers' choice of employment location. The results indicate that 60.46% of laborers have migrated from their home province, whereas 39.54% have remained in their home province. Focusing on personal, household, and community characteristics-in addition to the economic characteristics of the sample counties-multinomial logistic regression models reveal that farmer-laborers' employment location decisions are influenced by their personal capital endowment (age, years of education and social networks), family structure (the number of laborers, elders, children and students), home village characteristics (location, economic development level and the degree of relief of the land) and home county economic development level. Notably, male and female laborers' location decisions reveal a converging trend, and their differences are not pronounced. Per capita arable land area has little influence on location decisions, whereas the educational level of laborers has a significant impact. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for soybean seed size traits were stably detected in marker interval Satt640-Satt422 (approximately 25.5 cM) on chromosome 6 in our previous studies. However, little is known about whether these loci are derived from one major QTL or multiple linked QTL. To resolve this issue, 504 recombinant inbred lines (RILs, F) from the direct and reciprocal crosses of Lishuizhongzihuang with Nannong493-1 and 265 cultivars in China were used to fine-map the QTL. Inserted in the target interval were 22 simple sequence repeat markers in the RILs and 160 single nucleotide polymorphism markers in the cultivar population. As a result, seed length was associated with markers X40, X53, X83-X85 and X92, seed width was associated with markers X40, X53 and X83-X85, seed thickness was associated with markers X53, X83-X85 and X92, and 100-seed weight was associated with markers X40, X53, X83-X85 and X90-X92. This means that at least two common QTL among seed length, width and thickness were observed, and that the QTL for 100-seed weight was derived from those for its component traits, indicating their similar genetic bases. Using annotation project database and gene expression profile data, eight candidate genes were predicted. Of these genes, Glyma06g07200 (SNP097), Glyma06g07400, Glyma06g07400, Glyma06g07400 (SNP111), Glyma06g09650 (SNP332), Glyma06g08830 and Glyma06g08860 (X90-X92) may be involved in the process of seed development, and Glyma06g08800 (X83-X85) encodes ARM repeat superfamily protein, which is involved in the ubiquitination pathway regulating the development of seed size. Abstract: Since the late 1990s China has promoted the “Conversion of Cropland to Forest and Grassland Program” (CCFGP) as the largest environmental restoration program in the world. Because more water was required for established vegetation, it was assumed that evapotranspiration (ET) and water use in an older restored grassland would be greater than that in a younger restored grassland and that water shortages would then become more severe for further vegetation establishment in a semi-arid steppe due to the extraction of the established vegetation. To verify this hypothesis, a field experiment was carried out in 2008–2009 at seven sites of different ages after restoration. The hypothesis was tested using the Bowen ratio system together with other comparative methods. Results showed that less rainfall would infiltrate the deeper soil layer as the period of time after restoration increased and that the natural steppe site had the shallowest infiltration depth (10cm or less). However, the youngest restored grassland site had the deepest infiltration depth and the highest soil water content. These results also showed that transpiration and ET rates were higher in the natural steppe site and older restored sites than those in the younger restored sites. Furthermore, it was found that the ratio between soil evaporation and ET was generally lower for all seven sites, which indicated that transpiration was a dominant component in ET. These results indicated that more water was used for vegetation establishment in the older restored grassland than that in the younger restored grassland. Our hypothesis was proved to be true. Meanwhile, it was also found that the dominant species changed from annual herbs (species had lower drought tolerance ability) in the younger restored grassland to perennial grasses in the older restored grassland (species had higher drought tolerance ability). Therefore, it was concluded that the natural steppe was able to utilize more water for vegetation establishment and it used water more efficiently than the restored steppe, while the older restored steppe used water more efficiently than the younger restored steppe. Because changes of vegetation type from annual to perennial not only increased evapotranspiration, but also changed the water budget, more attention should be paid to water shortage when undertaking the CCFGP in semi-arid steppes. Anti-PD-1 therapy and chemotherapy is a recommended first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but the role of PD-1 blockade remains unknown in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We assessed the addition of sintilimab, a PD-1 inhibitor, to standard chemoradiotherapy in this patient population. This multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial was conducted at nine hospitals in China. Adults aged 18–65 years with newly diagnosed high-risk non-metastatic stage III–IVa locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (excluding T3–4N0 and T3N1) were eligible. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) using blocks of four to receive gemcitabine and cisplatin induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent cisplatin radiotherapy (standard therapy group) or standard therapy with 200 mg sintilimab intravenously once every 3 weeks for 12 cycles (comprising three induction, three concurrent, and six adjuvant cycles to radiotherapy; sintilimab group). The primary endpoint was event-free survival from randomisation to disease recurrence (locoregional or distant) or death from any cause in the intention-to-treat population. Secondary endpoints included adverse events. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03700476) and is now completed; follow-up is ongoing. Between Dec 21, 2018, and March 31, 2020, 425 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to the sintilimab (n=210) or standard therapy groups (n=215). At median follow-up of 41·9 months (IQR 38·0–44·8; 389 alive at primary data cutoff [Feb 28, 2023] and 366 [94%] had at least 36 months of follow-up), event-free survival was higher in the sintilimab group compared with the standard therapy group (36-month rates 86% [95% CI 81–90] vs 76% [70–81]; stratified hazard ratio 0·59 [0·38–0·92]; p=0·019). Grade 3–4 adverse events occurred in 155 (74%) in the sintilimab group versus 140 (65%) in the standard therapy group, with the most common being stomatitis (68 [33%] vs 64 [30%]), leukopenia (54 [26%] vs 48 [22%]), and neutropenia (50 [24%] vs 46 [21%]). Two (1%) patients died in the sintilimab group (both considered to be immune-related) and one (<1%) in the standard therapy group. Grade 3–4 immune-related adverse events occurred in 20 (10%) patients in the sintilimab group. Addition of sintilimab to chemoradiotherapy improved event-free survival, albeit with higher but manageable adverse events. Longer follow-up is necessary to determine whether this regimen can be considered as the standard of care for patients with high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Slip zone soil is usually composed of clay or silty clay; in some special geological environments, it contains gravels, which make the properties of the slip zone soil more complex. Unfortunately, in many indoor shear tests, gravels are removed to meet the demands of apparatus size, and the in situ mechanical property of the gravelly slip zone soil is rarely studied. In this study, the shear mechanical property of the gravelly slip zone soil of Huangtupo landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China was investigated by the in situ shear test. The test results show that the shear deformation process of the gravelly slip zone soil includes an elastic deformation stage, elastic–plastic deformation stage, and plastic deformation stage. Four functions were introduced to express the shear constitutive model of the gravelly slip zone soil, and the asymmetric sigmoid function was demonstrated to be the optimum one to describe the relationship of the shear stress and shear displacement with a correlation coefficient of 0.986. The comparison between the in situ test and indoor direct shear test indicates that gravels increase the strength of the slip zone soil. Therefore, the shear strength parameters of the gravelly slip zone soil obtained by the in situ test are more preferable for evaluating the stability of the landslide and designing the anti-slide structures. Background: At present, the epidemic of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has quickly engulfed the world. Inflammatory cytokines are associated with the severity and outcomes of patients with COVID-19. However, the prognostic value of pro-inflammatory factors in cancer patients with COVID-19 are unknown. Methods: A multi-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study, based on five designated tertiary hospitals for the treatment of COVID-19 in Hubei Province, China. 112 cancer patients with COVID-19, and 105 COVID-19 patients without cancer were enrolled in the study between January 1st, 2020 and April 30th, 2020. The risk assessment of pro-inflammatory factors for disease severity and clinical adverse outcomes was identified by univariable and multivariable logistic regression models. Results: Of the 112 cancer patients with COVID-19, 40 (35.7%) patients were in critical condition and 18 (16.1%) patients died unfortunately. Univariate and multivariate analysis demonstrated that hemoglobin level and pro-inflammatory neutrophils and C-reactive protein (CRP), can be used as independent factors affecting the severity of COVID-19; Meanwhile, pro-inflammatory neutrophils and CRP can be used as an independent influencing factor for adverse clinical outcome of death. Moreover, the dynamic changes of neutrophils and CRP were also presented, and compared with COVID-19 patients without cancer, cancer patients with COVID-19 showed higher neutrophil counts and CRP levels. Conclusion: In cancer patients with COVID-19, the significant increase in pro-inflammatory neutrophils and CRP indicated a more critical illness and adverse clinical outcome, and pro-inflammatory neutrophils and CRP played a greater adverse role compare with COVID-19 patients without cancer, which may be the cause of critical illness and adverse clinical outcomes of cancer patients with COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to use a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system based on the Thyroid Imaging, Reporting, and Data System (TI-RADS) to improve the diagnostic performance of thyroid cancer by analyzing clinical ultrasound imaging data. A retrospective diagnostic study of ultrasound image sets was conducted at five hospitals in China. A CAD system based on TI-RADS was applied in this study, and the diagnostic performance of CAD system was tested through multi-center data. The performance of the CAD system was compared with the consensus of three experienced radiologists. The interobserver agreement for cancer diagnosis was calculated between the CAD system and the consensus of the three experienced radiologists. The CAD system performed well in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, with an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.902 (95% CI: 0.884–0.918), and obtained results similar to those of the three experienced radiologists. The CAD system performed better in the internal test set than in the external test set (AUC: 0.930 vs 0.877, respectively). The performance of the CAD system in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer for nodules of different sizes (<1 cm, 1–2 cm and ≥2 cm) was basically similar (accuracy: 84.6% vs 85% vs 84.2%). The CAD system can recognize 15 ultrasound features of thyroid nodules, most of which reached the level of 3 experienced radiologists (12/15, 85%). Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the 7th edition of the International Union against Cancer/American Joint Committee on Cancer (UICC/AJCC) staging system for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Methods and materials: We performed a retrospective data review from 512 patients with biopsy-proven, nonmetastatic NPC in our cancer center (South China) between January 2003 and December 2006. Results: The local relapse-free survival rates (LRFS) and disease failure-free survival rates (DFS) in the 6th edition system T1 and T2a stages were not significantly different (P =0.629 and P =0.820), while the LRFS and DFS of T1 and T2 using the 7th edition system were significantly different (P =0.019 and P =0.009). The LRFS and DFS between T2 and T3 in the 7th edition systems were lack of significance (P =0.874 and P =0.589). The total difference in distant metastasis-free survival rate and DFS between N0 and N3 was slightly larger using the 7th edition system than the 6th edition. The nodal dimension of a cervical lymph node was not a significant prognostic factor. Conclusions: We observed a better segregation of survival curves by using the 7th edition system. It seems reasonable to downstage T3 as T2 and reject nodal greatest dimension from the N-staging system in the future revised edition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Salivary gland was the most common primary site in HNLELC. • Cervical lymph nodes metastases were common and spread orderly in HNLELC. • EBERs status might be a potential independent prognostic factor for OS in HNLELC. • Surgery and postoperative radiotherapy had better outcomes than surgery alone in HNLELC. We aimed to elucidate the clinical characteristics, prognostic factors and optimal treatment modalities of head and neck lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (HNLELC). Consecutive patients newly-diagnosed with non-metastatic HNLELC between December 2001 and March 2021 treated with curative intent were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 288 patients were included, of whom 87 (30.2%) underwent radical surgery alone, 43 (14.9%) underwent definitive radiotherapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy, and 158 (54.9%) underwent surgery followed by postoperative radiotherapy (SRT). Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA (EBER) was positive in 94.8% (239/252) of patients. Cervical node infiltration was seen in 52.8% (152/288) of patients. No significant difference was found in nodal metastasis rate between T1–2 and T3–4 classifications (49.5% vs. 56.5%, p = 0.308). The 3-year overall survival (OS), disease-free survival, locoregional relapse-free survival, and distant metastasis-free survival rates were 89.4%, 78.7%, 89.2%, and 87.7%, respectively. Compared to SRT, surgery alone associated with significant reduced 3-year local (92.8% vs. 96.5%, p = 0.012) and regional relapse-free survival rates (89.3% vs. 96.8%, p = 0.002). Definitive radiotherapy and SRT demonstrated comparable results in all 3-year survival outcomes (all p＞0.05). Multivariate analysis found EBER status was an independent favorable prognostic factor for OS (HR = 0.356, 95% CI: 0.144–0.882, p = 0.026). HNLELC was observed to associate with EBV infection and cervical nodal infiltration. Aim of the study Previous results from our trial showed that adjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy did not significantly improve survival after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at 2 years. Here, we present the data of long-term survival and late toxicities to further assess the ultimate therapeutic index of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC). Methods Patients with stage III–IVB (except T3-4N0) NPC were randomly assigned to receive CCRT plus AC or CCRT only at seven institutions in China. Patients in both groups received cisplatin 40 mg/m 2 weekly up to 7 weeks concurrently with radiotherapy. The CCRT plus AC group subsequently received adjuvant cisplatin 80 mg/m 2 and fluorouracil 800 mg/m 2 /d for 120 h every 4 weeks for three cycles. The primary end-point was failure-free survival. Results Two hundred and fifty-one patients were randomised to the CCRT plus AC group and 257 to the CCRT only group. After a median follow-up of 68.4 months, estimated 5-year failure-free survival rate was 75% in the CCRT plus AC group and 71% in the CCRT only group (hazard ratio 0.88, 95% confidence interval 0.64–1.22; p = 0.45). 66 (27%) of 249 patients in the CCRT plus AC group and 53 (21%) of 254 patients in the CCRT only group developed one or more late grade 3–4 toxicities (p = 0.14). Conclusion Adjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy still failed to demonstrate significant survival benefit after CCRT in locoregionally advanced NPC based on the long-term follow-up data, and addition of adjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil did not significantly increase late toxicities. The Experimental Muon Source (EMuS) is under design to serve as a multidisciplinary research platform including muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance (μ SR) applications at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The muon beam at EMuS will operate in a pulsed mode. The influences of the beam performance on μ SR data analysis have been quantitatively estimated using Monte Carlo simulations. The measurable range of depolarization rate is inversely proportional to the pulse width with a factor of ∼ 0.75 for the single-bunch mode or ∼ 0.6 for the double-bunch mode using the direct fit. This range can be extended by ∼ 4–8 times in variation with the total positron counts if the fitting function is convoluted with the beam time structure. Due to the superposition of the second muon bunch, the measurable range reduces ∼ 20% (∼ 30%) using the direct fit (convoluted fit). There is a crossover for the depolarization rate at 4/ Δ t (time interval between two muon bunches), with the double-bunch mode being clearly better for slow relaxation and the single-bunch mode better for fast relaxation measurements. The effective asymmetry for muon spin rotation measurements presents a damped oscillation trend for the double-bunch mode. Consequently, the continuous measurable range is divided into several discrete subregions correlated with the time interval Δ t. • The maximum measurable depolarization range is inversely proportional to pulse width. • The convoluted fit can extend the range by ∼ 4–8 times. • The range reduces 20% (30%) using direct fit (convoluted fit) in the double-bunch mode. • There is a crossover of depolarization rate at 4/ Δ t (Δ t is the time interval of two muon bunches) for the selection of bunch mode. • The continuous range in the single-bunch mode is divided into discrete sub-regions in the double-bunch mode in TF measurements. Summary: Background: The effect of the addition of adjuvant chemotherapy to concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma is unclear. We aimed to assess the contribution of adjuvant chemotherapy to concurrent chemoradiotherapy versus concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone. Methods: We did an open-label phase 3 multicentre randomised controlled trial at seven institutions in China. Randomisation was by a computer-generated random number code. Patients were stratified by treatment centre and randomly assigned in blocks of four. Treatment allocation was not masked. We randomly assigned patients with non-metastatic stage III or IV (except T3–4N0) nasopharyngeal carcinoma to receive concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone. Patients in both groups received 40 mg/m2 cisplatin weekly up to 7 weeks, concurrently with radiotherapy. Radiotherapy was given as 2·0–2·27 Gy per fraction with five daily fractions per week for 6–7 weeks to a total dose of 66 Gy or greater to the primary tumour and 60–66 Gy to the involved neck area. The concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy group subsequently received 80 mg/m2 adjuvant cisplatin and 800 mg/m2 per day fluorouracil for 120 h every 4 weeks for three cycles. Our primary endpoint was failure-free survival. We did efficacy analyses in our intention-to-treat population. Our trial is ongoing; in this report we present the 2 year survival results and acute toxic effects. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00677118. Findings: 251 patients were assigned to the concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy group and 257 to the concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone group. After a median follow-up of 37·8 months (range 1·3–61·0), the estimated 2 year failure-free survival rate was 86% (95% CI 81–90) in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy group and 84% (78–88) in concurrent chemoradiotherapy only group (hazard ratio 0·74, 95% CI 0·49–1·10; p=0·13). Stomatitis was the most commonly reported grade 3 or 4 adverse event during both radiotherapy (76 of 249 patients in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy plus adjuvant chemotherapy group and 82 of 254 in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone group) and adjuvant chemotherapy (43 [21%] of 205 patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy). Interpretation: Adjuvant cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy did not significantly improve failure-free survival after concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Longer follow-up is needed to fully assess survival and late toxic effects, but such regimens should not, at present, be used outside well-designed clinical trials. The objective of this article is to introduce the early Chinese clinical experience of using extracorporeal focused ultrasound (US) surgery (FUS) for the treatment of solid tumors. From December 1997 to October 2001, a total of 1038 patients with solid tumors underwent FUS ablation in 10 Chinese hospitals. The tumors included primary and metastatic liver cancer, malignant bone tumors, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, abdominal and pelvic malignant tumors, uterine myoma, benign breast tumors, hepatic hemangioma and other solid tumors. In this article, pathologic changes in tumors treated with FUS, real-time diagnostic imaging for targeting, monitoring and assessment of results by follow-up images are presented. Background: The physical function of elderly individuals reflects whether they have had a history of regular physical activity over the long term. Such indicators have been found to have a certain connection with cognitive function these years. However, there is limited research that associates it with mechanisms such as cerebral Aβ deposition. We aim to investigate this relationship and unveil the underlying mechanisms., Method: Physical function and cognition data of 4189 participants were obtained from the Chinese preclinical Alzheimer's disease study. Participants were divided into six groups according to disease severity. Among them, 1048 participants underwent the positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) and plasma biomarker test. Grip strength and gait were combined into a score indicating physical function. Multiple linear regression models and logistic regression models were mainly used to conduct the analysis., Results: There was a significant positive correlation between physical function and cognitive function (R = 0.48, p < 0.001), independent of sex, age, apolipoprotein E-ε4 genotype, and disease stages (p < 0.001). Physical function was effective in distinguishing individuals with cognitive impairment from those without (AUC = 0.835). Physical function was negatively associated with brain Aβ deposition (p = 0.008) and brain Aβ had an intermediary effect (p < 0.01) on the association between physical function and cognition in women. This association was mainly evident in the lateral parietal, lateral temporal, posterior cingulate, frontal, occipital, and precuneus regions. Physical function was negatively associated with plasma neurofilament light-chain (Nfl) level (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Physical function is strongly associated with cognitive function in the Chinese elderly, and brain Aβ deposition partly mediates the linkage in women. Plasma Nfl can be used as a potential target for exercise intervention in cognitive function. Since the late 1950s, radiopharmaceuticals have been used for diagnosis and treatment in clinical nuclear medicine in China. Over the decades, China has successfully established a relatively sophisticated system for radiopharmaceutical production and management, supported by state-of-the-art facilities. With the rapid growth of the national economy, the radiopharmaceutical market in China is expanding at a remarkable pace. This burgeoning market has led to an escalating demand for clinical-stage radiopharmaceuticals, either produced domestically or imported. Despite this positive trajectory, the development and application of radiopharmaceuticals in China have been hindered by several challenges that persist, such as inadequate research, insufficient investment, limited availability of radionuclides, shortage of trained personnel in related fields, and imperfections in policies and regulations. In an exciting development, the regulation reforms implemented since 2015 have positively affected China's drug regulatory system. The introduction of the "Mid- and Long-Term Development Plan (2021-2035) for Medical Isotopes" created concurrently an opportune environment for the advancement of innovative radiopharmaceuticals. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the approval process for novel radiopharmaceuticals by the National Medical Products Administration and the status of radiopharmaceuticals in research and development in China. Preclinical development and clinical translation of radiopharmaceuticals are undergoing rapid evolution in China. Objectives: Amyloid deposition is considered the initial pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Personalized management requires investigation of amyloid pathology and the risk factors for both amyloid pathology and cognitive decline in the Chinese population. We aimed to investigate amyloid positivity and deposition in AD patients, as well as factors related to amyloid pathology in Chinese cities., Methods: This cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted in Shanghai and Zhengzhou, China. All participants were recruited from urban communities and memory clinics. Amyloid positivity and deposition were analyzed based on amyloid positron emission tomography (PET). We used partial least squares (PLS) models to investigate how related factors contributed to amyloid deposition and cognitive decline., Results: In total, 1026 participants were included: 768 participants from the community-based cohort (COMC) and 258 participants from the clinic-based cohort (CLIC). The overall amyloid-positive rates in individuals with clinically diagnosed AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and normal cognition (NC) were 85.8%, 44.5%, and 26.9%, respectively. The global amyloid deposition standardized uptake value ratios (SUVr) (reference: cerebellar crus) were 1.44 ± 0.24, 1.30 ± 0.22, and 1.24 ± 0.14, respectively. CLIC status, apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4, and older age were strongly associated with amyloid pathology by PLS modeling., Conclusion: The overall amyloid-positive rates accompanying AD, MCI, and NC in the Chinese population were similar to those in published cohorts of other populations. ApoE ε4 and CLIC status were risk factors for amyloid pathology across the AD continuum. Education was a risk factor for amyloid pathology in MCI. Background: Tegoprazan is a potassium-competitive acid blocker that inhibits gastric acid and which may be used for eradicating Helicobacter pylori. This study focuses on the pharmacokinetic interaction and safety between tegoprazan and the combination of clarithromycin, amoxicillin and bismuth in healthy Chinese subjects., Methods: An open-label, three-period, single-center, multiple-dosage, single-sequence, phase I trial was conducted in 22 healthy subjects. In period 1, the subjects took tegoprazan 50 mg twice daily for 7 days, and in period 2 they were administered clarithromycin 500 mg, amoxicillin 1000 mg and bismuth potassium citrate 600 mg twice daily for 7 days (days 14-20). Tegoprazan, clarithromycin, amoxicillin and bismuth potassium citrate were then administered in combination for 7 days (days 21-27) in period 3. Blood samples were collected up to 12 h after the last dose of each period. Safety assessments were performed in each period., Results: The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) [90% confidence interval (CI)] of maximum plasma concentration at steady state (C max,ss ) and area under the plasma concentration-time curve over the dosing interval (AUC τ ) at steady state were 195.93% (175.52-218.71%) and 287.54% (263.28-314.04%) for tegoprazan and 423.23% (382.57-468.22%) and 385.61% (354.62-419.30%) for tegoprazan metabolite M1, respectively. The GMRs (90% CI) of C max,ss and AUC τ were 83.69% (77.44-90.45%) and 110.30% (102.74-118.41%) for clarithromycin, 126.25% (114.73-138.93%) and 146.94% (135.33-159.55%) for 14-hydroxyclarithromycin, 75.89% (69.73-82.60%) and 94.34% (87.94-101.20%) for amoxicillin, and 158.43% (125.43-200.11%) and 183.63% (156.42-215.58%) for bismuth, respectively. All reported adverse events were mild. The frequency of adverse events during the coadministration stage was not higher than that during the single- or triple-drug administration stages., Conclusion: The plasma exposure of tegoprazan, M1, 14-hydroxyclarithromycin and bismuth was increased after the coadministration of tegoprazan, clarithromycin, amoxicillin and bismuth. Introduction: The objective of this study is to investigate the incremental value of amyloid positron emission tomography (Aβ-PET) in a tertiary memory clinic setting in China., Methods: A total of 1073 patients were offered Aβ-PET using 18 F-florbetapir. The neurologists determined a suspected etiology (Alzheimer's disease [AD] or non-AD) with a percentage estimate of their confidence and medication prescription both before and after receiving the Aβ-PET results., Results: After disclosure of the Aβ-PET results, etiological diagnoses changed in 19.3% of patients, and diagnostic confidence increased from 69.3% to 85.6%. Amyloid PET results led to a change of treatment plan in 36.5% of patients. Compared to the late-onset group, the early-onset group had a more frequent change in diagnoses and a higher increase in diagnostic confidence., Discussion: Aβ-PET has significant impacts on the changes of diagnoses and management in Chinese population. Early-onset cases are more likely to benefit from Aβ-PET than late-onset cases., Highlights: Amyloid PET contributes to diagnostic changes and its confidence in Chinese patients. Background: Monitoring people's perspectives on the COVID-19 vaccine is crucial for understanding public vaccination hesitancy and developing effective, targeted vaccine promotion strategies. Although this is widely recognized, studies on the evolution of public opinion over the course of an actual vaccination campaign are rare., Objective: We aimed to track the evolution of public opinion and sentiment toward COVID-19 vaccines in online discussions over an entire vaccination campaign. Moreover, we aimed to reveal the pattern of gender differences in attitudes and perceptions toward vaccination., Methods: We collected COVID-19 vaccine-related posts by the general public that appeared on Sina Weibo from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021; this period covered the entire vaccination process in China. We identified popular discussion topics using latent Dirichlet allocation. We further examined changes in public sentiment and topics during the 3 stages of the vaccination timeline. Gender differences in perceptions toward vaccination were also investigated., Results: Of 495,229 crawled posts, 96,145 original posts from individual accounts were included. Most posts presented positive sentiments (positive: 65,981/96,145, 68.63%; negative: 23,184/96,145, 24.11%; neutral: 6980/96,145, 7.26%). The average sentiment scores were 0.75 (SD 0.35) for men and 0.67 (SD 0.37) for women. The overall trends in sentiment scores showed a mixed response to the number of new cases and significant events related to vaccine development and important holidays. The sentiment scores showed a weak correlation with new case numbers (R=0.296; P=.03). Significant sentiment score differences were observed between men and women (P<.001). Common and distinguishing characteristics were found among frequently discussed topics during the different stages, with significant differences in topic distribution between men and women (January 1, 2021, to March 31, 2021: χ 2 3 =3030.9; April 1, 2021, to September 30, 2021: χ 2 4 =8893.8; October 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021: χ 2 5 =3019.5; P<.001). Women were more concerned with side effects and vaccine effectiveness. In contrast, men reported broader concerns around the global pandemic, the progress of vaccine development, and economics affected by the pandemic., Conclusions: Understanding public concerns regarding vaccination is essential for reaching vaccine-induced herd immunity. This study tracked the year-long evolution of attitudes and opinions on COVID-19 vaccines according to the different stages of vaccination in China. Background: Hand-Foot-and-Mouth-Disease (HFMD) has been widely spread in Asia, and has result in a high disease burden for children in many countries. However, the dissemination characteristics intergroup and between different age groups are still not clear. In this study, we aim to analyze the differences in the transmissibility of HFMD, in the whole population and among age groups in Shenzhen city, by utilizing mathematical models., Methods: A database that reports HFMD cases in Shenzhen city from January 2010 to December 2017 was collected. In the first stage, a Susceptive-Infected-Recovered ( SIR ) model was built to fit data of Shenzhen city and its districts, and R eff was used to assess transmissibility in each district. In the second stage, a cross-age groups SIR model was constructed to calculate the difference in transmissibility of reported cases among three age groups of EV71 virus: 0-3 years, 3-5 years, and over 5 years which was denoted as age group 1, 2, and 3, respectively., Results: From 2010 to 2017, 345,807 cases of HFMD were reported in Shenzhen city, with peak incidence in spring and autumn in Shenzhen city and most of its districts each year. Analysis of the EV71 incidence data by age group revealed that age Group 1 have the highest incidence (3.13 ×10 -7 -2.31 ×10 -4 ) while age group 3 had the lowest incidence (0-3.54 ×10 -5 ). The differences in weekly incidence of EV71 between age groups were statistically significant ( t 12 = 7.563, P < 0.0001; t 23 = 12.420, P < 0.0001; t 13 = 16.996, P < 0.0001). The R 2 of the SIR model Shenzhen city population-wide HFMD fit for each region was >0.5, and P < 0.001. R eff values were >1 for the vast majority of time and regions, indicating that the HFMD virus has the ability to spread in Shenzhen city over the long-term. Differences in R eff values between regions were judged by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) ( F = 0.541, P = 0.744). S i I i R i -S j I j R j models between age groups had R 2 over 0.7 for all age groups and P <0.001. The R eff values between groups show that the 0-2 years old group had the strongest transmissibility (median: 2.881, range: 0.017-9.897), followed by the over 5 years old group (median: 1.758, range: 1.005-5.279), while the 3-5 years old group (median: 1.300, range: 0.005-1.005) had the weakest transmissibility of the three groups. Intra-group transmissibility was strongest in the 0-2 years age group (median: 1.787, range: 0-9.146), followed by Group 1 to Group 2 (median: 0.287, range: 0-1.988) and finally Group 1 to Group 3 (median: 0.287, range: 0-1.988)., Conclusion: The incidence rate of HFMD is high in Shenzhen city. In the data on the incidence of EV71 in each age group, the highest incidence was in the 0-2 years age group, and the lowest incidence was in the over 5 years age group. The differences in weekly incidence rate of EV71 among age groups were statistically significant. Acute gastrointestinal dysfunction is a common and important complication of sepsis. As no exiting formal definition and classification of gastrointestinal dysfunction, most of the treatment strategies for gastrointestinal dysfunction are not based on clinical evidence, but on their own clinical experience. Experts of traditional Chinese medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine and Western medicine from various disciplines in Shanghai are organized by the Shanghai Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and the Emergency Department Branch of Shanghai Physicians Association. After repeated discussion, literature search and formulation of the outline, we developed consensus on gastrointestinal dysfunction secondary to sepsis with integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine by consulting extensively on clinical experts in the fields of emergency medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, infectious medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, and holding several expert forums and consultation meetings. This clinical expert consensus focused on acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI) classification and inducer of sepsis. In this consensus, the common symptoms, diagnosis, classifications, treatment strategies and suggestions of acute gastrointestinal injury or dysfunction secondary to sepsis were explored from the aspect of both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine.

Introduction: The low sensitivity of [ 18 F]-fluorodeoxyglucose ([ 18 F]-FDG) for the diagnosis of gastric cancer limits its application. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential advantage of [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 over [ 18 F]-FDG in the evaluation of gastric cancer., Methods: This was a bicentric retrospective analysis of a prospective parent study (clinical trial: HS-KY-2020-826 (Huashan Hospital) and DF-2020-102 (Shanghai East Hospital)). Thirty-eight patients with gastric cancer (31 with adenocarcinoma and 7 with signet ring cell carcinoma) were included in this study. All of the participants underwent [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 and [ 18 F]-FDG imaging by positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) or PET/magnetic resonance (MR). The scans were interpreted by two experienced nuclear medicine physicians, and the maximum standardized uptake value (SUV max ) was calculated. Histopathological findings obtained from biopsy or resected surgical specimens were used as a reference for the final diagnosis., Results: For the detection of primary gastric cancer, the sensitivities of [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 PET and [ 18 F]-FDG PET were 100% (38/38) and 82% (31/38), respectively (P = 0.016). Four cases of adenocarcinoma and three cases of signet ring cell carcinoma were missed by [ 18 F]-FDG PET. The mean SUV max of [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 in tumours greater than 4 cm (11.0 ± 4.5) was higher than that in tumours less than 4 cm (4.5 ± 3.2) (P = 0.0015). The mean SUV max of [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 was higher in T2-4 tumours (9.7 ± 4.4) than in T1 tumours (3.1 ± 1.5) (P = 0.0002). For the detection of metastatic lesions, the sensitivities of [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 PET and [ 18 F]-FDG PET in 10 patients with regional lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis were 6/10 and 5/10, respectively., Conclusion: In this selected cohort, [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 PET had a superior detection rate than [ 18 F]-FDG PET for primary gastric cancer. [ 68  Ga]Ga-FAPI-04 PET could provide better performance with regard to gastric cancer diagnosis and staging. Prospective clinical trials are warranted., (© 2021. The Chinese caterpillar mushroom, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, is rare in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. It was reported that the development of ascospores in sexual stage of Chinese Cordyceps requires certain UV irradiation, but whether light has effect on the asexual stage of O. sinensis is unclear. It is important and necessary to identify the candidate genes involved in asexual stages (mycelium period) metabolism of O. sinensis exposed to light treatment. In this study, the isolated and purified monoascospore strains from O. sinensis were treated with 10 days light (L10) and dark as control. Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) was conducted to investigate the effect of light treatment on O. sinensis at the gene level and the changes in various metabolic pathways. The results showed that the colony surface was covered with villous aerial hyphae with a yellow circular mycelium ribbon in the center of the colony, and the content of polysaccharides, urea, adenosine, and cordycepin were significantly enhanced by L10 treatment. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional annotation analysis showed that cell structure and catalytic metabolism were the significant items classified, and crucial genes affecting the anabolic pathways of polysaccharides, urea, adenosine, and cordycepin were also identified. In addition, the important roles of photoreceptor genes CRYD, WC-1, and FRQ were verified by combined analysis of qRT-PCR and transcriptome sequencing. Collectively, this study would be helpful to better understand the influence of light on the asexual stage of Chinese Cordyceps and provide a preliminary light treatment reference for Cordyceps artificial cultivation.

Purpose: The increasing number of deaths due to road traffic accidents (RTAs) has attracted global attention. However, the influence of road types is rarely considered in the study of RTAs. This study evaluates the influence of different road types in RTAs in northern Guizhou to provide a basis for the formulation of evidence-based policies and measures., Methods: We obtained the data from the Zunyi Traffic Management Data Platform for the years 2009-2018. The mortality rates of RTAs were calculated. Descriptive methods and Chi-square tests were used to analyze the characteristics of road traffic collisions on different road types. We also examined the associations between the mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles and the growth of per capital gross domestic product (GDP) with Spearman's rank correlation analysis. According to the passing volume and the infrastructure, we defined different types of roads, like administrative road, functional road, general urban road and urban expressway., Results: In 2012, the traffic mortality rate of administrative roads was 8.9 per 100,000 people, and the mortality rate of functional roads was 7.4 per 100,000 people, which decreased in 2018 to 6.1 deaths per 100,000 people and 5.2 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively. The mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles reached the highest level in 2011 (28.8 per 10,000 vehicles and 22.5 per 10,000 vehicles on administrative and functional roads, respectively). The death rate of county roads was the highest among administrative roads (χ 2  = 17.389, p < 0.05) and that of fourth-class roads was the highest among functional roads (χ 2  = 21.785, p < 0.05). The mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles was negatively correlated with per capital GDP., Conclusion: Although our research shows that RTAs in northern Guizhou have steadily declined in recent years, the range of decline is relatively small. Objective: To three-dimensionally calculate the craniofacial parameters of midface of patients with Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) in China, in order to understand the changes in the spatial position relationship between the various anatomical structures of the midface., Methods: CT imaging data of TCS patients and age- and gender-matched normal populations between January 2013 and July 2020 was retrospectively analyzed. A total of 33 cases met the selection criteria for inclusion in the study, including 14 cases in the TCS group and 19 cases in the control group. ProPlan CMF 3.0 software was used to perform three-dimensional digital reconstruction of the craniofacial bone, measure the anatomical parameters of the midface, and analyze its morphological structure; at the same time perform three-dimensional digital reconstruction of the upper airway for morphological analysis (measure upper airway volume)., Results: CT images analysis revealed that all 14 patients with TCS presented the typical features with downward slanting of the palpebral fissures and different degrees of zygomatico-orbital complex dysplasia. Cephalometric and morphological analysis of the midface revealed that, multiple transverse diameters of the midface of TCS patients were significantly decreased when compared with the control group ( P <0.05), such as the width of the maxillary base, the length of the maxillary complex, and some distances related to the nasal morphology; but the distance between bilateral orbitales increased in TCS group ( P <0.05). Several anteroposterior distances in TCS group were decreased significantly when compared to control group and the distance between the skull base point and the posterior nasal spine was the most shortened ( P <0.05). But there was no significant difference of the distance between nasion and anterior nasal spine, which represented anterior midface height, between groups ( P >0.05). The skull base angle and SNB angle (the angle between the sella point-nose root point-inferior alveolar seat point) of the TCS group both decreased when compared with the control group ( P <0.05), but there was no significant difference in SNA angle (the angle between the sella point-nose root point-upper alveolar seat point) between the two groups ( P >0.05). The total volume of the upper airway was (24 621.07±8 476.63) mm 3 in the TCS group, which was significantly lower than that of the control group [(32 864.21±13 148.74) mm 3 ] ( t =2.185, P =0.037)., Conclusion: The transverse distances, anteroposterior distances, and multiple craniofacial angles measurement of TCS patients were significantly decreased when compared to the control group, presented with different degrees of zygomatico-orbital complex dysplasia, nasal and maxillary dysplasia, but there was no obvious restriction in face height development. Reduced internal diameters of the upper airway maybe responsible for the decreased upper airway volume of patients with TCS.

Introduction: Simultaneous administration of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and clopidogrel has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome. Clopidogrel + ASA in a fixed-dose combination (FDC) provides a pharmaceutical option to enhance adherence to the coadministration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). Herein, we evaluate the bioequivalence of enteric ASA and clopidogrel in an FDC compared with simultaneous administration of the individual formulations., Methods: This study is a randomized, single-center, open-label, three-sequence, three-period, two-treatment, crossover study conducted in healthy Chinese male and female subjects under fed conditions. Subjects were randomized to receive, in each period, a single dose of (1) a combination tablet containing 75-mg clopidogrel and 100-mg enteric ASA (test formulation) or (2) coadministration of one 75-mg clopidogrel tablet and one 100-mg enteric-coated ASA tablet (reference formulations) under fed conditions. Plasma samples were analyzed for ASA, salicylic acid, clopidogrel, and the clopidogrel metabolite SR26334. For ASA, the reference-scaled average bioequivalence (RSABE) analysis was conducted for C max of ASA because within-subject standard deviation (SD W ) was ≥ 0.294 for log-transformed C max ., Results: The point estimate (test/reference geometric mean ratio) was between 0.80 and 1.25, and the upper one-sided 95% confidence interval (CI) for the scaled average bioequivalence metric was ≤ 0 (-0.08). AUC of ASA as SD W was < 0.294 for log-transformed AUC last and AUC. Estimates of 90% CIs for log-transformed AUC last and AUC ratios were within the bioequivalence range of 0.80 to 1.25 (0.98-1.08 and 1.00-1.10, respectively). For clopidogrel, the 90% CIs for the ratios comparing log-transformed C max , AUC last , and AUC ratios of clopidogrel following administration of test versus reference formulation were calculated using the ABE method and were well within the acceptable range of 0.80 to 1.25 (1.02-1.12, 0.92-0.99, and 0.92-0.98, respectively)., Conclusion: FDC of ASA and clopidogrel was bioequivalent to the simultaneous administration of the individual formulations in healthy Chinese subjects under fed conditions., Trial Registration: CTR20190376.

The "positivity effect" (PE) reflects an age-related increase in the preference for positive over negative information in attention and memory. The present experiment investigated whether Chinese and UK participants produce a similar PE. In one experiment, we presented pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral pictures simultaneously and participants decided which picture they liked or disliked on a third of trials, respectively. We recorded participants' eye movements during this task and compared time looking at, and memory for, pictures. The results suggest that older but not younger adults from both China and UK participant groups showed a preference to focus on and remember pleasant pictures, providing evidence of a PE in both cultures. Bayes Factor analysis supported these observations. These findings are consistent with the view that older people preferentially focus on positive emotional information, and that this effect is observed cross-culturally.

Older readers (aged 65+ years) of both alphabetic languages and character-based languages like Chinese read more slowly than their younger counterparts (aged 18-30 years). A possible explanation for this slowdown is that, due to age-related visual and cognitive declines, older readers have a smaller perceptual span and so acquire less information on each fixational pause. However, although aging effects on the perceptual span have been investigated for alphabetic languages, no such studies have been reported to date for character-based languages like Chinese. Accordingly, we investigated this issue in three experiments that used different gaze-contingent moving window paradigms to assess the perceptual span of young and older Chinese readers. In these experiments, text was shown either entirely as normal or normal only within a narrow region (window) comprising either the fixated word, the fixated word, and one word to its left, or the fixated word and either one or two words to its right. Characters outside these windows were replaced using a pattern mask (Experiment 1) or a visually similar character (Experiment 2), or blurred to render them unidentifiable (Experiment 3). Sentence reading times were overall longer for the older compared with the younger adults and differed systematically across display conditions. Crucially, however, the effects of display condition were essentially the same across the two age groups, indicating that the perceptual span for Chinese does not differ substantially for the older and young adults. We discuss these findings in relation to other evidence suggesting the perceptual span is preserved in older adulthood.

Objectives: Substantial evidence indicates that older readers of alphabetic languages (e.g., English and German) compensate for age-related reading difficulty by employing a more risky reading strategy in which words are skipped more frequently. The effects of healthy aging on reading behavior for nonalphabetic languages, like Chinese, are largely unknown, although this would reveal the extent to which age-related changes in reading strategy are universal. Accordingly, the present research used measures of eye movements to investigate adult age differences in Chinese reading., Method: The eye movements of young (18-30 years) and older (60+ years) Chinese readers were recorded., Results: The older adults exhibited typical patterns of age-related reading difficulty. But rather than employing a more risky reading strategy compared with the younger readers, the older adults read more carefully by skipping words infrequently, making shorter forward eye movements, and fixating closer to the beginnings of two-character target words in sentences., Discussion: In contrast with the findings for alphabetic languages, older Chinese readers appear to compensate for age-related reading difficulty by employing a more careful reading strategy. Age-related changes in reading strategy therefore appear to be language specific, rather than universal, and may reflect the specific visual and linguistic requirements of the writing system.

Extended homozygosity is a genomic region in which the copies inherited from parents are identical, and has obvious inter-individual differences in length and frequency. Runs of homozygosity (ROHs), regarded as a type of structure variations, may have potential capacity in regulating gene transcription. To learn more about the genome-wide distribution of ROH regions in humans and understand the potential roles, this study applied ROH-based approach to quantify and characterize ROHs in 41 Chinese Han female subjects, and test potential associations between ROHs and mRNA expressions by eQTL analysis to ascertain whether ROHs are relevant to gene transcription in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). 10,884 ROH regions were identified in human genome. The average cumulative length of ROH regions was 217,250 ± 20,241 kb. The number of core segments in each chromosome generally matched the total length of corresponding chromosome, i.e., the longer the chromosome, the more the core segments. Genes located in the core regions of ROH were significantly enriched in multiple basic metabolism pathways. A total of 226 cis-eQTLs and 178 trans-eQTLs were identified. The cis-effect size was mainly concentrated at ± 0.5; and the trans-effect size was mainly concentrated at -1.5 and 1.0. Genes with eQTL effects were significantly enriched in functions related to protein binding, cytosol, nucleoplasm, nuclear membrane, protein binding and citrate metabolic process. This study described comprehensive distributions and characteristics of ROH in Han female Chinese, and recognized the significant role of ROH associated with gene transcription in human PBMC.

Objectives: We aimed to validate and compare the 7th and 8th edition of AJCC staging systems for non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and proposed staging systems from Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Guangxi., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included 899 patients treated between November 5, 2002 and May 27, 2010. Separation and discrimination of each staging system in overall survival were primarily compared., Results: Compared with the 7th AJCC, the 8th AJCC and all proposed staging systems well separated across T-classification. T-classification from Guangzhou seemed to perform best in discrimination (C-index 0.6454), followed by the 8th AJCC (0.6451), the 7th AJCC (0.6386), Hong Kong (0.6376) and Guangxi (0.5889). For N-classification, no staging systems improved the weakness of the 7th AJCC in separating N2 and N1, except that suggestion from Guangzhou showed higher potential (P=0.096). Besides, N-classification from Guangzhou had a C-index of 0.6444, larger than that of the 8th AJCC (0.6235), the 7th AJCC (0.6179), Hong Kong (0.6175) and Guangxi (0.6175). Accordingly, stage group of staging system from Guangzhou showed higher discrimination (C-index 0.6839), compared with the 8th AJCC (0.6791), the 7th AJCC (0.6766), Hong Kong (0.6765) and Guangxi (0.6688), despite that stage I and II remained inseparable (P=0.322)., Conclusions: The 8th AJCC staging system appeared to be better than the 7th AJCC. Background: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is widely used for prostate cancer screening, but low specificity results in high false positive rates of prostate biopsies., Objective: To develop new risk assessment models to overcome the diagnostic limitation of PSA and reduce unnecessary prostate biopsies in North Chinese patients with 4-50 ng/mL PSA., Methods: A total of 702 patients in seven hospitals with 4-10 and 10-50 ng/mL PSA, respectively, who had undergone transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies, were assessed. Analysis-modeling stage for several clinical indexes related to prostate cancer and renal function was carried out. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to develop new risk assessment models of prostate cancer for both PSA level ranges 4-10 and 10-50 ng/mL. External validation stage of the new models was performed to assess the necessity of biopsy., Results: The new models for both PSA ranges performed significantly better than PSA for detecting prostate cancers. Both models showed higher areas under the curves (0.937 and 0.873, respectively) compared with PSA alone (0.624 and 0.595), at pre-determined cut-off values of 0.1067 and 0.6183, respectively. Patients above the cut-off values were recommended for immediate biopsy, while the others were actively observed. External validation of the models showed significantly increased detection rates for prostate cancer (4-10 ng/mL group, 39.29% vs 17.79%, p=0.006; 10-50 ng/mL group, 71.83% vs 50.0%, p=0.015)., Conclusions: We developed risk assessment models for North Chinese patients with 4-50 ng/mL PSA to reduce unnecessary prostate biopsies and increase the detection rate of prostate cancer.

The effect of pretreatment body mass index on survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma remains contradictory.All patients (N = 1778) underwent intensity-modulated radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Body mass index was categorized as underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5-22.9 kg/m2), overweight (22.9-27.5 kg/m2), and obesity (≥27.5 kg/m2). Propensity score matching method was used to identify patients with balanced characteristics and treatment regimen. Disease-specific survival (DSS), overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and locoregional relapse-free survival were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression.Following propensity matching, 115 (underweight vs normal), 399 (overweight vs normal), and 93 (obese vs normal) pairs of patients were selected, respectively. In univariate analysis, underweight patients had inferior DSS/OS (P = 0.042) and DMFS (P = 0.025) while both overweight and obese patients showed similar survival across all the endpoints (P ≥ 0.098) to those with normal weight. In multivariate analysis, underweight remained predictive of poor DSS/OS (P = 0.044) and DMFS (P = 0.040), whereas overweight (P ≥ 0.124) or obesity (P ≥ 0.179) was not associated with any type of survival.Underweight increased the risk of death and distant metastasis, whereas overweight or obese did not affect the survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This provides support for early nutritional intervention during the long waiting time before treatment.

Background: Diurnal temperature range (DTR) is an important meteorological indicator that reflects weather stability and is associated with global climate change and urbanization. Previous studies have explored the effect of DTR on human health in coastal cities with small daily temperature variations, but we have little evidence for high plateau regions where large DTRs usually occur. Using daily mortality data (2007-2013), we conducted a time-series analysis to assess the effect of DTR on daily mortality in Yuxi, a high plateau city in southwest China., Methods: Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was used to estimate DTR effects on daily mortality, controlling for daily mean temperature, relative humidity, sunshine duration, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, day of the week, and seasonal and long-term trends., Results: The cumulative effects of DTR were J-shaped curves for non-accidental, cardiorespiratory and cardiovascular mortality, with a U-shaped curve for respiratory mortality. Risk assessments showed strong monotonic increases in mortality starting at a DTR of approximately 16 °C. The relative risk of non-accidental morality with extreme high DTR at lag 0 and 0-21 days was 1.03 (95% confidence interval: 0.95-1.11) and 1.33 (0.94-1.89), respectively. The risk of mortality with extreme high DTR was greater for males and age <75 years than females and age ≥75 years., Conclusions: The effect of DTR on mortality was non-linear, with high DTR associated with increased mortality. A DTR of 16 °C may be a cut-off point for mortality prognosis and has implications for developing intervention strategies to address high DTR exposure., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
