Background: Contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is a common complication with poor prognosis after coronary angiography (CAG). With the prevention methods widely being implemented, the temporal trends of incidence and mortality of CA-AKI are still unknown over the last five years. The study aims to determine the incidence and prognosis of CA-AKI in China.Methods: This retrospective cohort study was based on the registry at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital in China (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04407936). We analyzed data from hospitalization patients who underwent CAG and with preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine (Scr) values from January 2013 to December 2017.Results: 11,943 patients were included in the study, in which the mean age was 63.01 ± 10.79 years and 8,469 (71.1 %) were male. The overall incidence of CA-AKI was 11.2 %. Compared with 2013, the incidence of CA-AKI in 2017 was significantly increased from 9.7 to 13.0 % (adjusted odds ratios [aOR], 1.38; 95 %CI, 1.13-1.68; P-value < 0.01, P for trend < 0.01). The temporal trends of incidence among patients of different ages and genders yielded similar findings. During a standardized follow-up of 1 year, 178 (13.7 %) CA-AKI patients died in total, which showed no obvious decreased trend in this 5 five years from 21.1 to 16.5 (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.72; 95 %CI, 0.36-1.45; P-value = 0.35, P for trend = 0.24).Conclusions: Our Chinese cohort showed that the incidence of CA-AKI increased significantly, while CA-AKI associated mortality showed no obvious decreased trend in the last five years. Inspired by 'Hufu' in ancient China, we manufactured semiflexible micro crystallizer with two aspectant sessile platforms by 3D-printing technique that can construct a series of heteromorphic droplets (HDs) via stretching droplet height. By coordinating the gas–liquid interface and flow intensity (i.e., Ra/Ma), central-converging micro-flows were generated, which dominated solute and particle motion towards droplet center. Efficient harvest of single cubic NaCl crystal was achieved at platform center under wide volume and concentration ranges. [Display omitted] Droplet crystallization behavior held great potential in crystal preparation, micromaterial engineering, and molecular assembly. However, restricted by natural surface tension, the intrinsic crystallization regulation and efficient harvest of high quality crystal in diverse droplet features were still a great challenge. Herein, we developed a 3D printed semiflexible micro crystallizer with two aspectant sessile platforms that could simultaneously construct a series of heteromorphic droplets (HDs) and controllable HD shape. By shaping HD on the interface of the platform, central-converging micro-flows were generated by coordinating the gas–liquid interface and flow intensity (i.e., Ra/Ma) during HD crystallization from 'barrel', 'can', to 'sand clock' shape, which was validated via simulative and experimental research. Therefore, HDs, constructed in semiflexible micro crystallizer, exhibited efficient screening (>70 %) of single cubic crystal just at the center zone of platform, even under wide ranges of concentration and volume, manifesting excellent repeatability on high quality crystal harvest and relevant interfacial science research. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the topological characteristics of brain structural network in pediatric epilepsy patients with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) by applying graph theoretical approaches., Methods: Nine patients with generalized seizures and eight normal controls (NC) were enrolled. Based on diffusion tensor imaging, graph theory analysis was used to characterize the topological properties in preoperative patients (EP-pre), postoperative patients (EP-post) and NC. The global properties included clustering coefficient (Cp), shortest path length (Lp), small-worldness (γ, λ, δ), global network efficiency (Eg) and local network efficiency (Eloc). The regional properties included degree centrality (DC), nodal efficiency (NE), nodal local efficiency (NLE) and nodal shortest path length (Np). Two sample t-test and paired sample t-test were utilized to compare properties difference., Results: All three groups followed small-world characteristics. There was no significant difference in small-worldness, Cp, Lp, Eg or Eloc between EP-pre and EP-post. Compared with EP-pre: DC in EP-post decreased in the right cuneus and right temporal gyri, while increased in the right paracentral lobule; NE in EP-post decreased in the left dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, right cuneus, right supramarginal gyrus, and right rolandic operculum, while increased in the right paracentral lobule; NLE in EP-post decreased in the left posterior cingulate gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus, while increased in the left parahippocampal gyrus; NP in EP-post decreased in the right paracentral lobule, while increased in the right cuneus., Conclusion: VNS causes topological characteristics changes in pediatric patients with generalized seizures through regulating regional properties in some brain structures., (Copyright © 2020 The Japanese Society of Child Neurology. To provide the general information on corneal transplantation (CT) in China, China Cornea Society designed a questionnaire on CT from 2014 to 2018 and entrusted it to 31 committee members for implementation of the survey nationwide. This article presents the results of the survey and compares the indicators used in the survey and those in the annual statistical report released by the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). The number of corneal transplantations completed by the 64 hospitals from 2014 to 2018 was respectively 5377, 6394, 7595, 8270 and 8980, totally 36,616 (22,959 male and 13,657 female). The five largest hospitals by the number of corneal transplantations completed 15,994 surgeries in total, accounting for 43.68% of all the surgeries performed in the 64 hospitals. The most common indication for corneal transplantations was corneal leukoma (7683, 20.98%), followed by bacterial keratitis (4209, 11.49%), corneal dystrophies (4189, 11.44%), keratoconus (3578, 9.77%) and corneal perforation (2839, 7.75%). The main surgical techniques were penetrating keratoplasty (PK) (19,896, 54.34%), anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) (13,869, 37.88%). The proportion of PK decreased from 57.97% in 2014 to 52.88% in 2018 while the proportion of ALK increased from 36.04% in 2014 to 37.92% in 2018. The geographical distribution of keratoplasties performed in China is unbalanced. BACKGROUND The role of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in liver fibrosis remains poorly understood. This study aimed to use a mouse model of carbon tetrachloride (CCL₄)-induced liver fibrosis to investigate the effects of BM-MSCs during liver hypoxia and the involvement of the transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1) and SMADs pathway. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into the control group (n=10), the model group (n=10), and the BM-MSC-treated model group (n=10). In the model group, liver fibrosis was induced by intraperitoneal injection of CCl₄. BM-MSCs were transplanted after 12 weeks of CCl₄ treatment. The serum biochemical parameters and histological changes in the liver, using histochemical stains, were investigated. The expression of collagen type I (collagen I), alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), TGF-ß1, SMAD3, SMAD7, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1alpha), and vascular endothelial grow factor (VEGF) were assessed by immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time polymerase chain (RT-qPCR) reaction. RESULTS Treatment with BM-MSCs reduced the expression of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) compared with the model group, and reduced liver fibrosis determined histologically using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome staining compared with the model group. The area of liver fibrosis decreased after BM-MSCs treatment (p<0.05). Protein expression of HIF-1alpha and VEGF were decreased after BM-MSCs treatment (p<0.05). Transplantation of BM-MSCs reduced the mRNA expression of TGF-ß1, collagen I, alpha-SMA, and SMAD3 (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS BM-MSC transplantation reduced CCl₄-induced murine liver fibrosis, indicating that in a hypoxic microenvironment, BM-MSCs may inhibit the TGFß-1/SMADs pathway.

Objective: To determine the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) applied directly on the eyelids and meibomian gland expression (MGX) in treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)., Background: IPL application on the periocular skin effectively improves meibomian gland secretion and tear film break-up time (TBUT) in patients with MGD/dry eye., Methods: This prospective, randomized, double-masked, controlled study involved 44 patients. One eye was randomly selected for IPL treatment; the other served as a control. Study eyes received three IPL treatments at 4-week intervals; IPL was applied directly on the eyelids, and the eye was protected with a Jaeger lid plate. Control eyes received sham IPL treatments. Both eyes received MGX and artificial tears. Meibomian gland yielding secretion score (MGYSS), TBUT, Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED), cornea fluorescein staining (CFS), meibography, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), and fundus examination were performed., Results: Compared to the baseline, MGYSS, TBUT, and SPEED and CFS scores improved in the study eyes, while only SPEED and CFS scores improved in the control eyes (p < 0.001 for all). Changes in MGYSS and TBUT were higher in the study eyes than in the control eyes (p < 0.05), but changes in SPEED and CFS scores were similar (p > 0.05). BCVA and IOP improved in both the study and control eyes (p < 0.05). Five patients experienced mild pain and burning during IPL treatment. One patient suffered partial eyelash loss., Conclusions: IPL combined with MGX safely and effectively treated MGD.
