Optimizing irrigation strategies is crucial for sustaining cotton production in the face of growing water scarcity. The three-year experimental study (2020–2022) focused on the impact of varying irrigation amounts (320, 370, and 420 mm) and frequencies (4-, 8-, and 12-day intervals) on cotton growth, yield, yield components, and fiber quality in southern Xinjiang. Employing a completely randomized design with three replications, the results indicated higher irrigation amounts resulted in numerically 2.5–7.5% higher lint yields compared to those under medium and low irrigation amounts, notably significant in 2021. Boll density emerged as the primary yield component influencing yield loss due to irrigation amount, followed by seed cotton weight boll−1. Increased boll density was associated with a greater total number of fruiting sites. Additionally, the increased seed cotton weight boll−1 could be linked to an increased seed number boll−1 and a decreased boll fraction at the lower fruiting branches with lower seed cotton weight boll−1. Higher irrigation frequency improved lint yield by increasing boll density, though a significant effect was observed only in 2020. Increased irrigation amounts generally led to longer fiber lengths but lower micronaire values, while increased irrigation frequency resulted in longer, stronger fibers and reduced micronaire values. Furthermore, the highest yield stability was observed under the condition of high irrigation amount and high frequency. Determining the optimal plant architecture and canopy structure are important objectives in research on the breeding and cultivation of high-yielding crops. To address this challenge, a field experiment was conducted in Anyang, Henan, China, to assess cotton light interception, boll spatial distribution, leaf area index (LAI), plant height and biomass, lint yield and yield component during 2018–2019. Treatments including 10 cotton cultivars with belong to tower-shaped and tube-type canopy structure. Compared with compact cotton varieties, the loose and tower-shaped cotton varieties intercepted more light (average 28.6%) and had a higher LAI (average 34.2%), resulting in a higher cotton yield (average 14.8%). In addition, polynomial correlation showed that the maximum light interception rate occurred at the flowering and boll-forming stage, when the annual mean plant height (94.6 cm), LAI (3.58) and biomass (15,006 kg ha−1) all reached their peak. Moreover, yield was extremely significantly positively correlated with intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (IPAR) (R = 0.7) and positively correlated with light use efficiency (LUE) (R = 0.36). Overall, the results suggest that cotton cultivars with loose and tower-type canopy structures intercept more light and should be planted to increase cotton yield and LUE in the Yellow River basin of China and areas with similar conditions. The current cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fallow farming system causes soil degeneration and cotton yield reduction. Cover cropping is commonly associated with improved soil fertility and crop productivity, while the effect of cover crops on soil quality and cotton productivity remains unclear in the region. Using a monoculture cotton (cotton-fallow) as the control, a field experiment was conducted to verify the impacts of cotton with two cover crops, Orychophragmus violaceus (cotton/O. violaceus) and Vicia villosa (cotton/V. villosa), on soil chemical properties and cotton productivity. The results showed that cotton/O. violaceus increased the soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), and available nitrogen (AN) by 5.77%, 2.03%, and 13.07% compared to cotton-fallow at a 0–100 cm soil depth, respectively. Cotton/O. violaceus developed relatively greater cotton biomass accumulation and higher cotton yield than cotton/V. villosa and cotton-fallow, an immediate cause of which was greater reproductive organ biomass accumulation and a larger number of bolls per unit area. Furthermore, SOM and TN had a significantly positive correlation with cotton biomass and yield. Cotton/O. violaceus were more conducive than cotton/V. villosa and cotton-fallow in the Yellow River basin of China and in other areas with similar requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cotton-winter fallow is the major cropping system of cotton in the Yellow River basin of China, which not only leads to a considerable waste of land and natural resources, but also high greenhouse emissions and a loss of reactive nitrogen. Replacing winter bare fallow in cotton production with February orchid as a cover crop is a new cropping system in this area, but its sustainability is still unknown. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted with two cropping systems (cotton-winter fallow and cotton-February orchid) under four nitrogen application rates (0, 112.5, 168.75, and 225 kg N ha−1). Field observations were incorporated into a life cycle assessment to estimate the carbon footprint, nitrogen footprint, net ecosystem economic benefits, and economic benefits. The estimated carbon footprint per unit of sown area was 43.6–76.1% lower in the cotton-February orchid system than in the cotton-winter fallow system, mainly because of the increase in soil organic carbon. The cotton-February orchid system significantly increased the nitrogen footprint per unit of sown area by 6.7–11.5% under different application rates mainly because of the increase in N2O emissions. The nitrogen application rate significantly impacted the carbon and nitrogen footprints. After accounting for changes in the nitrogen and carbon footprints, the cotton-February orchid system with 168.75 kg N ha−1, which resulted in the highest net ecosystem economic benefits and economic benefits, resulted in a 25.0% reduction in nitrogen fertilizer applied and a 9.5% increase in net ecosystem economic benefits compared with the conventional cotton-winter fallow system and nitrogen fertilizer application rate (225.75 kg N ha−1). Thus, adopting an integrated strategy combining February orchid as a cover crop and a reduced nitrogen fertilizer application contributes to improvements in green and sustainable cotton production systems in the Yellow River basin and other regions with similar ecological conditions. The growth and development of cotton are closely related to climatic variables such as temperature and solar radiation. Adjusting planting density is one of the most effective measures for maximizing cotton yield under certain climatic conditions. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the optimum planting density and the corresponding leaf area index (LAI) and yield under the climatic conditions of Henan Province, China, and (2) to learn how climatic conditions influence cotton growth, yield, and yield components. A three-year (2013–2015) field experiment was conducted in Anyang, Henan Province, using cultivar SCRC28 across six planting density treatments: 15,000, 33,000, 51,000, 69,000, 87,000, and 105,000 plants ha−1. The data showed that the yield attributes, including seed cotton yield, lint yield, dry matter accumulation, and the LAI, increased as planting density increased. Consequently, the treatment of the maximum density with 105,000 plants ha-1 was the highest-yielding over three years, with the LAIs averaged across the three years being 0.37 at the bud stage, 2.36 at the flower and boll-forming stage, and 1.37 at the boll-opening stage. Furthermore, the correlation between the cotton yield attributes and meteorological conditions indicated that light interception (LI) and the diurnal temperature range were the climatic factors that most strongly influenced cotton seed yield. Moreover, the influence of the number of growing degree days (GDD) on cotton was different at different growth stages. Regulation of plant population density is crucial for optimizing cotton fiber quality. However, the relationship between plant density and fiber quality stability under contrasting climatic conditions remains unclear, and the compromise between fiber quality and temporal stability is unknown. In this study, based on a long-term field experiment with various plant densities (1.5–10.5 plants m–2) conducted from 2008 to 2021, cotton fiber quality variability, including fiber length, fiber strength, elongation, uniformity index, and micronaire, and their temporal stability, were evaluated. We determined the optimal plant density for cotton cultivation and elucidated the contributions of plant density and climatic conditions to the variability of cotton fiber quality and its temporal stability in China's Yellow River Valley. The results revealed that cotton maintained its upper-intermediate quality throughout the study period, with fiber length, strength, elongation, uniformity index, and micronaire values ranging between 28.04 and 30.03 mm, 26.15–30.05 cN tex–1, 5.90–6.83%, 83.85–85.44%, and 4.24–5.14, respectively. An increase in plant density improved fiber quality but impaired temporal stability (P < 0.01), and slight increases in stability at lower plant densities resulted in substantially decreased probabilities of years with major declines in fiber quality class. Plant density and climatic conditions regulated the quality traits (23.5% and 69.3% of the explained variance, respectively), including fiber length, fiber strength, and micronaire, while climate was the most important factor (75.9% of the explained variance) in determining their temporal stability. Photosynthetically active radiation and maximum and mean temperature exhibited significant positive effects on fiber quality, whereas mean diurnal temperature range had the opposite effect. A plant density of 3.3–5.1 plants m–2 ensures the highest temporal stability of cotton fiber quality without declines in the fiber quality class. Analyzing the nitrogen footprint (NF) and the potential reduction of reactive nitrogen in crop production and proposing higher N utilization efficiency strategies are important approaches to sustainable crop development. Cotton is an important cash crop in China. However, only a few studies have systematically quantified the NF of cotton production in China, analyzed its temporal and spatial varieties, clarified its main constituent factors and influential factors, and explored its nitrogen emission reduction potential. This study adopts the life cycle method and analyzes the temporal-spatial varieties in the NF of cotton production in China's main cotton planting areas from 2004 to 2018 based on statistical data, analyzes the main components of the nitrogen footprint of China's cotton production, studies the main driving factors of China's cotton nitrogen emissions based on principal component analysis, simulates the nitrogen emissions of China's cotton production combined with the STIRPAT model, and comprehensively analyzes the potential nitrogen emission reduction of China's cotton production. The results indicated that the average nitrogen footprint per unit area (NFa) of cotton planting districts in Northwest China (Nw.CPD), the Yellow River Basin (Yel.RCPD) and the Yangtze River Basin (Yan.RCPD) was 112 kg Neq·ha−1, 65 kg Neq·ha−1 and 155 kg Neq·ha−1, respectively, and the NFa of cotton production in Hunan was the highest. In terms of spatial distribution, the NFa, NFy and NFv of cotton production in Yan.RCPD were higher than those in Yel.RCPD and Nw.CPD, and the NF of cotton planted in Yel.RCPD was the lowest. The NFa of cotton planting in China increased continuously, and the NFa in Nw.CPD showed an increasing trend, while the NFa in Yel.RCPD and Yan.RCPD showed a decreasing trend. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that fertilizer and the associated reactive nitrogen losses were the main components of the nitrogen footprint. The prediction results of the STIRPAT model showed that compared with 2018, China's cotton production can reduce nitrogen emissions by 54.43 kilotons in 2050 at most. Improved fertilizer utilization efficiency, optimized field management measures and effective policy intervention are effective strategies to reduce the nitrogen footprint of cotton production. Analyzing the carbon footprint of crop production and proposing low-carbon emission reduction production strategies can help China develop sustainable agriculture under the goal of 'carbon peak and carbon neutrality'. Cotton is an economically important crop in China, but few reports have systematically quantified the carbon footprint of China's cotton production and analyzed its spatiotemporal changes and driving factors. This study used a life cycle approach to analyze the spatiotemporal changes and identify the main components and driving factors of the carbon footprint of cotton production in China between 2004 and 2018 based on statistical data. The results showed that the carbon footprint per unit area of cotton in Northwest China, the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin reached 6220.13 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 , 3528.14 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 and 2958.56 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 , respectively. From 2004 to 2018, the CFa in the Yellow River Basin and Northwest China increased annually, with average increases of 59.87 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 and 260.70 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 , respectively, while the CFa in the Yangtze River Basin decreased by an average of 21.53 kg CO 2 eq·ha -1 per year. The ridge regression and Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model showed that fertilizer, irrigation electricity and agricultural film were the main influences on carbon emission growth at the micro level and that the economic factor was the key factor at the macro level. Improving the efficiency of cotton fertilization and electricity use and ensuring the high-quality development of the cotton industry are effective strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of cotton cultivation in the future. This study comprehensively uses statistical data and mathematical modeling to provide theoretical support for accounting and in-depth analysis of cotton carbon emissions. Aim : The aims of the study were to evaluate the non-inferiority of the safety and immunogenicity of a new trial purified vero cell-cultured rabies vaccine (trial vaccine) in healthy subjects comparing with the control purified vero cell-cultured rabies vaccine (control vaccine) following Essen regimen and to evaluate the non-inferiority of the safety and immunogenicity of the trial vaccine following two intramuscular regimens, between Zagreb and Essen regimen. Methods : Serum samples were collected before vaccination and on d 7, 14, 35/42 post vaccination. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded for 30 d following each vaccination. This study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-PPR-15007057). Results : There was no significant difference in the incidence of AEs, local and systemic reactions, among Zagreb group, Essen group, and control group. But the incidence of solicited AEs was a significant difference among the three groups ( p = 0.0498). The incidence of solicited AEs was higher in Essen group than that in control group and Zagreb group ( p = 0.0278, p = 0.0248). In the subjects whose antibodies were seronegative before vaccination, the seroconversion rates of antibodies among three groups were all 100.0% on d 14 and d 35/42. The Essen group was not inferior to the control group, and the Zagreb group was not inferior to the Essen group on d 14. On d 14 and d 35/42, the geometric mean concentration of the three groups was much higher than the immune protection level of 0.5 IU/ml. Conclusions : The trial vaccine had good safety and immunogenicity, and the trial vaccine is not inferior to the control vaccine. Different cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) planting patterns are widely applied in the Yellow River Valley of China, and crop yield mainly depends on light interception. However, little information is available on how cotton canopy light capturing and yield distribution are affected by planting patterns. Hence, field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to study the response of cotton canopy light interception, square and boll distribution, the leaf area index (LAI) and biomass accumulation to three planting patterns: a cotton monoculture (CM, planted on 15 May) system, a cotton/wheat relay intercropping (CWI, planted on 15 May) system, in which three rows of wheat rows were intercropped with one row of cotton, and a system in which cotton was directly seeded after wheat (CWD, planted on 15 June). The following results were obtained: 1) greater light capture capacity was observed for cotton plants in the CM and CWI compared with the CWD, and the light interception of the CM was 22.4% and 51.4% greater than that of the CWI and CWD, respectively, at 30 days after sowing (DAS) in 2016; 2) more bolls occurred at the first sympodial position (SP) than at other SPs for plants in the CM; 3) based on the LAI and biomass accumulation, the cotton growth rate was the greatest in CWD, followed by CM and CWI; and 4) the CM produced significantly greater yields than did the other two treatments because it yielded more bolls and greater boll weight. Information on the characteristics of cotton growth and development in response to different planting patterns would be helpful for understanding the response of cotton yields to planting patterns and would facilitate the improvement of cotton productivity., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Background: Mumps vaccine immunizations have reduced the incidence of this disease. With the variation of mumps circulating strain, novel vaccine strains are always important., Methods: A 2-center parallel, randomized, double-blind noninferiority trial was performed to compare an F-genotype attenuated mumps vaccine (SP strain) to the A-genotype vaccine (S-79, Jeryl-Lynn strain) in 1080 healthy children aged 8-24 months in Hubei, China., Results: Participants were randomly assigned to receive a high or low dose of the SP or S79 vaccine and then assessed clinically at 30 minutes and 1-28 days postinoculation. No differences in local or systemic reactivity were observed. A similar incidence of severe adverse events associated with the vaccine was observed in the high-dose group and the positive control group. Based on throat swab collections, no viral shedding was present at the 4th and 10th days in any group. Neutralizing and hemagglutination-inhibiting antibody assays with the F- or A-genotype strains showed similar trends in geometric mean titers in the high-dose SP and S79 groups. Increased cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses were observed in all groups., Conclusions: The F-genotype attenuated mumps vaccine is safe, offers immunogenicity against a homologous virus, and is noninferior to the A-genotype vaccine in 8- to 24-month-old children.

Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have reported multiple risk loci associated with risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), some of which are involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signaling pathway. We systematically examined associations of common genetic variations in the TGFβ signaling pathway and environmental factors with CRC risk using a two-staged case-control study in a Chinese population. A set of 77 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 10 candidate genes involved in the TGFβ signaling pathway and several environmental factors including sex, age, smoking and drinking were examined by random forest (RF) to capture the potential gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in stage 1 of the study with 443 CRC patients and 480 controls. Three promising SNPs (SMAD7 rs11874392, TGFBR1 rs10988706 and rs6478972) selected by the RF method were genotyped in stage 2 comprising 351 cases and 360 controls for validation. SMAD7 rs11874392 presented consistently significant associations with a risk of CRC at both stages, with odds ratio = 1.41 (95% confidence interval = 1.21-1.63) using additive modes in combined analyses. Moreover, the potential interactions between SMAD7 rs11874392, TGFBR1 rs10988706 and rs6478972 were indicated consistently in both stages of the study by using pair-wise interaction and multilocus genotype pattern analysis. Additionally, gene-smoking interactions for rs11874392, rs10988706 and rs6478972 were also found to enhance the risk of CRC at both stages, with P for multiplicative interaction equal to 1.162×10(-6), 8.574×10(-8) and 9.410×10(-8) in combined analyses, respectively. This study emphasized the substantial role of the TGFβ signaling pathway in CRC, especially in interaction with smoking.
