Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigated the prevalence child depression in primary schools. Methods: 3685 students from Grade 3 to Grade 5 were selected from 7 primary schools of Pudong district in Shanghai by random and cluster sampling. The study design consisted of a screening stage in which the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children(CES-DC) were used, and a clinical interview stage in which the K-SADS-present state version (K-SADS) and DSM-IV were used. The diagnoses of depressive disorder were made according the DSM-IV criteria. Results: The prevalence of children depression was 1.60% (95%CI=1.19%∼2.00%). The prevalence rate of male(2.08%) was significant higher than that of female (1.09%)(X2=5.40, P=0.02). The rate of depressive disorder increased with age from 0.57% (8 years old) to 2.47% (12 years old). The prevalence of depression was no significant difference between ages from 8 to 12 years old (X2 =4.49, P=0.34). Conclusion: The prevalence rate of children depression in Shanghai is low. The prevalence of depression among boys is much higher than that of girls.It shows the prevalence of depression is no significant difference between ages from 8 to 12 years old. Objective: To explore the association between resting heart rate(RHR) and all-cause mortality among the Chinese oldest-old aged more than 80. Methods: Using a total of seven surveys or follow-ups data (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). A total of 17 886 elderly over 80 years old were selected as subjects, their resting heart rate were measured though baseline survey and the survival outcome and death time of the subjects were followed up. The subjects were divided into 6 groups according to their resting heart rate. Cox regression model was used to estimate the effect of resting heart rate on mortality risk. The interaction of age, gender and resting heart rate was also analyzed by likelihood ratio test. Results: The age of subjects M ( P 25 , P 75 ) was 92 (86, 100) years old, including 10 531 females (58.9%) and there were 13 598 participants died, the mortality rate was 195.5 per 1 000 person-years. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that compared to the control group (60-69 pbm/min), the hazard ratio of the elderly are 1.06 (95% CI : 1.02, 1.11), 1.09 (95% CI : 1.04, 1.15), 1.23 (95% CI : 1.14, 1.34), 1.25 (95% CI : 1.08, 1.44) in the group of RHR between 70-79, 80-89, 90-99 and ≥100 pbm/min and P values are all less than 0.05. Likelihood ratio test showed that RHR and age had an interaction effect. ( P for interaction=0.011). Conclusion: The risk of all-cause death increased with the increase of resting heart rate and this relationship was stronger between the 80-89 years old people.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between fat mass and obesity associated ( FTO ) gene polymorphism and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and provide clues and basis for the study of GDM mechanism. Methods: The case group of GDM pregnant women who delivered at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from March 1, 2012 to July 30, 2014 were selected, and matched the control group among non-GDM pregnant women by age, gestational age and residential address, and 324 cases and 318 controls were finally included. DNA was extracted and genotyped, and min P test and unconditional logistic regression model were used to estimate the relationship between FTO gene polymorphism and GDM. Results: At gene level, we did not find the association between FTO and the risk of GDM ( P >0.05). After adjusted for family history of diabetes, pre-pregnancy body mass index and multiple comparisons using false discovery rate method, unconditional logistic regression analysis showed that pregnant women who carried the rs11075995 TT genotype ( OR =0.59, 95 %CI : 0.35-0.89), rs3826169 GG genotype ( OR =0.59, 95 %CI : 0.35-0.88), and rs74245270 GA genotype ( OR =0.69, 95 %CI : 0.49-0.98), GA or AA genotype( OR =0.70, 95 %CI : 0.50-0.97) had reduced risk of GDM. However, pregnant women who carried the rs74018601 GA genotype ( OR =1.51, 95 %CI : 1.07-2.12), GA or AA genotype ( OR =1.46, 95 %CI : 1.06-2.02), rs7205009 AA genotype ( OR =1.83, 95 %CI : 1.18-2.86), GA or AA genotype ( OR =1.53, 95 %CI : 1.08-2.19), and rs9888758 AG genotype ( OR =1.43, 95 %CI : 1.02-2.00) had elevated risk of GDM. Conclusion: The polymorphisms of FTO gene rs11075995,rs3826169, rs74245270, rs74018601, rs7205009 and rs9888758 were associated with the risk of GDM.

Objective: To investigate the relations between dietary intake during pregnancy and the incidence of their babies with small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Data on demographics, dietary intake of protein, fat, and carbohydrates of the pregnant mothers during the first, second and third trimester, were collected. Information related to birth weight and gestational age of the infants were also gathered. A total of 8 102 women, who delivered their babies at the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from March 2012 to September 2016, were enrolled in this project. Among them, 961 mothers had infants with SGA but the other 7 141 of them having normal infants. Unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the effect of dietary nutrient intake on SGA the first, second and third trimester. Results: We found that low dietary intake of protein during the first trimester and following trimesters during pregnancy were positively associated with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.534, 95 %CI : 1.217-1.934; OR =1.268, 95 %CI : 1.005-1.599; OR =1.310, 95 %CI : 1.036-1.655). When adjusting for maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, we found that when mothers were with a pre-pregnancy BMI less than 18.5 or with low maternal intake of protein during the first trimester, positive association with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.872, 95 %CI : 1.033-3.395; OR =1.754, 95 %CI : 1.125-2.734), was noticed. However, for mothers with a pre-pregnancy BMI between 18.5 and 24.0 or with low protein intake during the first trimester, significant association with higher risk of SGA ( OR =1.465, 95 %CI : 1.089-1.972) was found. Conclusions: Through our observation, maternal dietary intake during pregnancy seemed to be associated with the risk of SGA but the effects of dietary intake were different, according to the BMI of pre-pregnancy population. Early pregnancy appeares as the key period for dietary intake which may influence the SGA.

Objective: To analyze the influencing factors and mechanism for unprotected sexual behavior of men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Methods: MSM who are more than 16 years old and have had homosexual sexual behaviors in recent years were recruited from five cities (Tianjin, Harbin, Nanjing, Chongqing and Xi'an) with active MSM population during 2013-2014 through network, site recruitment and peer recommendation using convenient sampling method. 3 519 subjects were included in this study. The sexual behavior related information of MSM in five cities was investigated using questionnaires. The confirmatory factor analysis was used to construct the measurement model by using the robust estimation method based on the weighted least square method to estimate parameters, and the final model was determined through evaluation and modification. Results: A total of 3 519 subjects were (29.9±8.76) years old, with a clear sexual orientation of 3 223 (91.6%), and 2 287 (65.0%) were aware of free HIV/AIDS treatment policies. The proportion of using condom last time was 77.2% ( n =2 718), and the proportion of using condom every time was 36.9% ( n =1 299) and 43.2% ( n =1 521) respectively for the past six months with fixed and temporary partners. Structural equation model provided a good fit, the root mean square error of approximation, comparative fit index and non-normed fit index was 0.07, 0.97, 0.95, respectively. Knowing AIDS knowledge, educational level and sexual orientation had direct effects on unprotected sexual behavior, and the path coefficients were 0.179,-0.049 and -0.159, respectively. While the role of interventions was indirect, the path coefficient was 0.147. Conclusion: Lower education and unclear sexual orientation are disadvantages for reducing unprotected sexual behavior. Interventions mainly affect the unprotected sexual behavior by improving the level of HIV/AIDS knowledge. Increasing the comprehensive knowledge of MSM through intervention should be highly valued.

Objective: To investigate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and small for gestational age (SGA) birth based on maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and provide evidence for the development of comprehensive prevention programs on SGA birth. Methods: Between March, 2012 and September, 2016, a total of 8 523 pregnant women delivering in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were surveyed to collect the information about their demographic characteristics, folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy and about their infants. Among their infants, 1 066 were small for gestational age (case group), 7 457 were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (control group). Unconditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and SGA birth in the context of different pre-pregnancy BMI. Results: The overall incidence of SGA birth was 12.51 % (1 066/8 523). After adjusting the confounding factors, pre-pregnancy BMI<18.5 kg/m(2) was a risk factor for SGA birth ( OR =1.22, 95 %CI : 1.01-1.47), pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) was associated with a reduced risk of SGA birth ( OR =0.81, 95 %CI :0.68-0.97). After adjusting confounding factors, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was a protective factor for SGA birth ( OR =0.82, 95 %CI : 0.68-0.98). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight group (24.0 kg/m(2)≤BMI<28.0 kg/m(2)) with OR of 0.55 (95 %CI : 0.36-0.85). No significant association was observed in other groups. When examined by folic acid supplement type, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 μg per tablet) was a protective factor for SGA birth ( OR =0.82, 95 %CI : 0.69-0.99). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 μg per tablet) was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight groups ( OR =0.56, 95 %CI : 0.36-0.86). No association was observed between periconceptional folic acid containing multivitamin supplementation and SGA birth. Conclusions: Periconceptional folic acid supplementation (400 μg) was associated with reduced risk of SGA birth in women with pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) and<28.0 kg/m(2). No association between folic acid supplementation and SGA was observed in other groups. This study suggests that pre-pregnancy BMI might modify the influence of folic acid supplementation on the risk of SGA birth.

Tai'an, a famous cultural tourist district, is a new endemic foci of scrub typhus in northern China. Frequent reports of travel-acquired cases and absence of effective vaccine indicated a significant health problem of scrub typhus in Tai'an. Thus, descriptive epidemiological methods and spatial-temporal scan statistics were used to describe the epidemic characteristics and detect the significant clusters of the high incidence of scrub typhus at the town level in Tai'an. Results of descriptive epidemiological analysis showed a total of 490 cases were reported in Tai'an with the annual average incidence ranging from 0·48 to 2·27/100 000 during 2006-2013. Females, the elderly and farmers are the high-risk groups. Monthly changes of scrub typhus cases indicated an obvious epidemic period in autumn. Spatial-temporal distribution analysis, showed significant clusters of high incidence mainly located in eastern and northern Tai'an. Our study suggests that more effective, targeted measures for local residents should be implemented in the eastern and northern areas of Tai'an in autumn. Meanwhile, it may prove beneficial for health policy makers to advise travellers to take preventive measures in order to minimize the risk of infection of scrub typhus in Tai'an.

During a survey of myxozoan parasites of common carp Cyprinus carpio in Honghu Lake, Hubei Province, China, a parasite was collected that was identified as Myxobolus dispar based on an earlier description from China. However, the small subunit ribosomal DNA of this species shared only 90 % similarity with M. dispar, instead matching M. musseliusae with 100 % identity. To resolve this apparent taxonomic conflict, the validity of M. dispar reported from China was investigated. The species encountered here and in the earlier report from China both bear spores that are notably smaller than those of M. dispar in Europe. In the present study, a mucous envelope was adhered to the posterior of many fresh spores and was observed to expand and surround the spore. This structure has never been reported from fresh spores of M. dispar. Histology showed extravascular plasmodia in the gill filaments in close contact with the cartilaginous ray of the filament, which contrasts with the plasmodia of M. dispar which develop in the arteries of the gill filaments. Phylogenetically, the current species is distinct from M. dispar, instead forming a sister group with M. musseliusae. The data presented here allow us to conclude that the species isolated is M. musseliusae and that prior reports of M. dispar in China are unsubstantiated.

Objective: To explore a feasible approach to increase case finding of tuberculosis (TB) through intensive referral and tracing of TB suspects and patients., Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in three Chinese cities. A strategic referral and tracing system was developed for the local situation in Hunan, China. Data from a 1-year monitoring of referral, tracing and diagnosis of TB suspects/cases were used to assess outcomes., Results: Among 126 public general hospitals and clinics in 38 project counties, the 124 (98.4%) health facilities that participated referred an average of 10 TB suspects and cases to the TB dispensary every month. A total of 6364 suspects and 5759 cases were referred. Compared to the previous year, the number of TB suspects increased by 102.1%, from 25 719 to 51 967; the referral of TB suspects increased five-fold; 10 596 new smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases were identified; and the notification of new smear-positive PTB increased by 112.9%, from 27.1/100 000 before the project year to 57.7/100 000, a significantly higher percentage than that of non-project areas, which had a notification rate of 38.8/100 000., Conclusion: Intensive referral and tracing of TB suspects/patients is a feasible and effective method of increasing case finding. Strengthening administrative interventions and incentives is essential to achieve project objectives.

In 1991-1995 by using the Rieckmann in vitro micro-method, susceptibilities of Plasmodium falciparum to eight antimalarials in the China-Lao PDR and China-Myanmar border areas were tested. The resistant rates of P. falciparum to chloroquinine were 95.0%-100%; IC50 114-240nmol/l. P. falciparum resistant rates to amodiaquine resistance accounted for 83.5%-100%, IC50 52-72nmol/l. All cases were sensitive to quinine, IC50 470-608nmol/l. P. falciparum isolates from the Lao PDR frontier were highly sensitive to artesunate, dihydroartemisinin, and arteether. Resistant rates from other areas were 0-11%. P. falciparum from China-Myanmar and Lao PDR border areas were also sensitive to mefloquine, IC50 68-88nmol/l. A longitudinal survey of the sensitivity of P. falciparum in vivo on the China-Lao PDR border showed that the average defervescent time of falciparum malaria was treated by pyronaridine increased from 32.7 +/- 16.0 hours during 1984-85 to 56.2 +/- 27.4 hours in 1995; the recrudescence rate rose up from 15.2% to 37.5%. The results monitored in vitro showed that all cases assessed in 1988 for response to pyronaridine were sensitive, but 36.4% of cases had emerging resistance, IC50 increased from 13nmol/l to 40 nmol/l. The above results suggested that P. falciparum in these areas has expressed resistance to chloroquine and amodiaquine. However, the parasites are still sensitive to artemisinin, pyronaridine, mefloquine, quinine, but with a declining sensitivities.

The resistance of P. falciparum to chloroquine was assayed by in vitro microtest in 1981 and after cessation of medication in 1984, 1988-1990 and 1992 in south Yunnan Province of China. The resistance rates were 97.4% (38/39), 100% (25/25), 96.1% (73/76) and 93.7% (59/63), respectively; ID50 were 170, 132, 125 and 110 nmol/L; ID95 were 1,000, 740, 707 and 576 nmol/L; mean dosages for complete inhibition of schizont formation were 55.4, 46.7, 45.8 and 35.4 (pmol/well). A comparison of the results in 1981, 1984, 1988-1990 and 1992, the resistance rate showed no marked change, ID50 dropped 22.3% (P < 0.05), 26.4% (P < 0.05) and 35.3% (P < 0.01); ID95 declined 26.0% (P < 0.05), 29.3% (P < 0.05) and 42.2% (P < 0.01); mean dosage of inhibition dropped 15.7% (P > 0.05), 17.3% (P < 0.05) and 36.1% (P < 0.01). The results show that the extent of resistance in chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum to chloroquine in south Yunnan has been declined markedly, indicating that coresistance was variable and dropped along with the declining of drug pressure.
