The aim of this assessment was to determine the information needs, resources, and resource preferences and self/family-management challenges of parents caring for a child with asthma in China. The acceptance of asthma and consolidated framework for implementation research guided the study. A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used. Seventy-one parents of a child receiving care in an outpatient respiratory clinic completed a three-part, pragmatic, self-report survey. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data using thematic analysis. Parents, who needed more knowledge about asthma, sought information from internet sources. However, most parents preferred receiving information during in-person consultation with trained specialists. Management challenges revolved around understanding asthma information, formulating beliefs about asthma, experiencing distressing thoughts and feelings, forming supportive networks, and meeting their child's emotional needs. Evidence supports expanding nursing roles in China to include extended time for initial in-person parental interactions and follow-up using reliable clinic-based internet counseling. Background: Nurses' palliative and hospice care-specific education is associated with the quality of palliative and hospice care that influences health outcomes of patients with life-limiting illnesses and their caregivers. However, China lacks measures available to assess nurses' educational needs in palliative and hospice care. The End-of-Life Professional Caregiver Survey (EPCS) is a psychometrically reliable self-reporting scale to measure multidisciplinary professionals' palliative and hospice care educational needs. This study was performed to explore the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the EPCS (EPCS-C) among Chinese nurses. Methods: We translated and culturally adapted the EPCS into Chinese based on Beaton and colleagues' instrument adaptation process. A cross-sectional study design was used. We recruited 312 nurses from 1482 nurses in a tertiary hospital in central China using convenience sampling to complete the study. Participants completed the EPCS-C and a demographic questionnaire. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to test and verify the construct validity of the nurse-specific EPCS-C. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to appraise the reliability of the nurse-specific EPCS-C. Results: A three-factor structure of EPCS-C was determined, including cultural, ethical, and national values; patient- and family-centered communication; and effective care delivery. The exploratory factor analysis explained 70.82% of the total variances. The 3-factor solution of the nurse-specific EPCS-C had a satisfactory model fit: χ2 = 537.96, χ2/df = 2.96, CFI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.079, IFI = 0.94, and GFI = 0.86. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the overall questionnaire was 0.96. Conclusions: The nurse-specific EPCS-C showed satisfactory reliability and validity to assess nurses' palliative and hospice care educational need. From December 25, 2019 to January 31, 2020, 33 cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were identified in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, China, yet none of the affiliated HCWs was infected. Here we analyzed the infection control measures used in three different departments in the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University and correlated the measures with the corresponding infection data of HCWs affiliated with these departments. We found that three infection control measures, namely the isolation of the presumed positive patients, the use of facemasks and intensified hand hygiene play important roles in preventing nosocomial transmission of COVID-19. To understand the contamination characteristics and ecological risk of antibiotics in contaminated fields of pharmaceutical plants， samples of the surface soil， soil column， wastewater treatment process water， ground water， and residue dregs were collected from two typical antibiotic pharmaceutical plants in South and North China. A total of 87 commonly used antibiotics were quantified using ultrasound extraction-solid phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that a total of 31 antibiotics of five classes were detected in all types of samples， and the maximum concentrations at each sampling point in the surface soil， soil column， residue dregs， wastewater treatment process water， and groundwater were 420 ng·g -1 ， 595 ng·g -1 ， 139 ng·g -1 ， 1 151 ng·L -1 ， and 6.65 ng·L -1 ， respectively. Most of the antibiotics were found in the surface soil， showing a decreasing trend with the depth of the soil column. The ecological risk assessment indicated that sulfamethazine， sulfaquinoxaline， tetracycline， chlorotetracycline， and D-sorbitol were at higher risk. Improving the efficiency of antibiotic removal from pharmaceutical wastewater and preventing production shop leaks are effective measures of controlling antibiotic contamination into and around fields in pharmaceutical plants.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory-related disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). More than 200 countries worldwide are affected by this disease. The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is the major epidemic variant worldwide and is characterized by higher infectivity. However, the immunity and risk factors for prolonged viral elimination in patients with non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infections are unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between immunity and duration of viral elimination in non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients in Shanghai., Methods: In total, 108 non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients from Shanghai New International Expo Center Fangcang Shelter Hospital were recruited in this study. They were further allocated to the early elimination (EE) and prolonged elimination (PE) groups according to SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid positivity duration., Results: Compared to patients with EE, those with PE had increased serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-5, IL-6, and IL-8; higher neutrophil count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR); lower lymphocyte, eosinophil, and red blood cell counts; and lower concentrations of hemoglobin and albumin (ALB). In lymphocyte subpopulation analysis, lower numbers of CD3 + T cells, CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and NK cells and a higher CD4/CD8 ratio were observed in patients with PE. In addition, correlation analysis results revealed that cycle threshold values of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant ORF1ab and N were negatively correlated with IL-6 and IL-8 levels and positively correlated with eosinophil count in patients with COVID-19. Finally, multivariate regression analysis showed that ALB, CD4/CD8 ratio, NLR, and eosinophil count were predictors of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant elimination., Conclusion: In this study, we identified that the ALB, CD4/CD8 ratio, NLR, and eosinophil count were risk factors for prolonged viral elimination in non-severe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant-infected patients. Aims: Limited data regarding the association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), largely based on an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of < 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 (low eGFR), have yielded inconsistent results, and no report has demonstrated the relationship of RC with CKD [defined as low eGFR and/or albuminuria (defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g)] in Chinese general middle-aged and elderly population. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between RC and CKD in such population., Methods: In total, 7356 Chinese participants aged ≥ 40 years were recruited from five regional communities in Luzhou city between May 2011 and December 2011. Fasting RC was calculated from the lipid profile measured by standard laboratory procedures. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the possible association between RC and CKD., Results: Participants in the highest quartile of RC had higher body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting and 2-h postload blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1C, prevalence of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, CKD, albuminuria, low eGFR, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and eGFR compared with those in the lowest quartile (all P for trend < 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the risk of CKD gradually increased across RC quartiles (P for trend < 0.01), and participants in the highest quartile of RC were at a significantly increased risk of prevalent CKD compared to those in the lowest quartile in total subjects (odds rate: 1.344, 95% confidence intervals 1.097-1.648, P < 0.01). In subgroup analysis, significant relation between RC level and increased risk of prevalent CKD was detected in women, subjects with overweight/obesity, non-prediabetes, hypertension, normal HDL-C, appropriate and high LDL-C, and without cardiovascular disease (CVD) events after multiple adjustments., Conclusions: Higher RC is independently associated with increased risk of prevalent CKD, and RC might serve as a new risk biomarker for CKD in a general middle-aged and elderly Chinese population, especially in women, subjects with overweight/obesity, non-prediabetes, hypertension, normal HDL-C, appropriate and high LDL-C, and without CVD events., (© 2021. Background: Understanding parents' experiences is a prerequisite to developing interventions that are sensitive to needs of children and families. In China, little is known about parental experiences of having a young child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This phenomenological study aimed to describe parental experiences of having a young child with ALL in China., Method: Ten parents, recruited in central China using purposive sampling, participated in face-to-face, in-depth interviews using Haase's adaptation of Colaizzi's phenomenological method., Results: Five theme categories were identified: (a) The Cancer Diagnosis as a Terrible Disaster-The Sky is Falling, (b) Fighting the Beast, (c) Putting on a Happy Face and Other Coping Strategies, (d) Diagnosis Disclosure: If We Tell and How to Tell, and (e) Hope-Filled Expectations: Returning to Normal Life., Conclusion: Parents put their child's health as their top priority. They strive to manage uncertainty about prognosis and cope with enormous pressures caused by children's suffering, financial burden, and stigma. Parents also express their resilience and hope throughout their child's cancer journey. Support services to strengthen specific families' protective factors (i.e., family/community support, hope, and positive coping) are needed to foster resilience and quality of life. Health care professionals should systematically assess parents' needs, provide validated education materials, and implement tailored interventions across the cancer continuum. Public education and advocacy about cancer is also necessary to decrease cancer-related stigma, and provide financial aid and health care resources in pediatric oncology.

In December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in Wuhan, China, and has spread globally. However, the transmission route of SARS-CoV-2 has not been fully understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate SARS-CoV-2 shedding in the excreta of COVID-19 patients. Electronical medical records, including demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory and radiological findings of enrolled patients were extracted and analyzed. Pharyngeal swab, stool, and urine specimens were collected and tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Viral shedding at multiple time points in specimens was recorded, and its correlation analyzed with clinical manifestations and the severity of illness. A total of 42 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled, 8 (19.05%) of whom had gastrointestinal symptoms. A total of 28 (66.67%) patients tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in stool specimens, and this was not associated with the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and the severity of illness. Among them, 18 (64.29%) patients remained positive for viral RNA in the feces after the pharyngeal swabs turned negative. The duration of viral shedding from the feces after negative conversion in pharyngeal swabs was 7 (6-10) days, regardless of COVID-19 severity. The demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory and radiologic findings did not differ between patients who tested positive and negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the feces. Viral RNA was not detectable in urine specimens from 10 patients. Background: In the early stages of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hubei, China, the local health-care system was overwhelmed. Physicians and nurses who had no infectious disease expertise were recruited to provide care to patients with COVID-19. To our knowledge, no studies on their experiences of combating COVID-19 have been published. We aimed to describe the experiences of these health-care providers in the early stages of the outbreak., Methods: We did a qualitative study using an empirical phenomenological approach. Nurses and physicians were recruited from five COVID-19-designated hospitals in Hubei province using purposive and snowball sampling. They participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews by telephone from Feb 10 to Feb 15, 2020. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Haase's adaptation of Colaizzi's phenomenological method., Findings: We recruited nine nurses and four physicians. Three theme categories emerged from data analysis. The first was "being fully responsible for patients' wellbeing-'this is my duty'". Health-care providers volunteered and tried their best to provide care for patients. Nurses had a crucial role in providing intensive care and assisting with activities of daily living. The second category was "challenges of working on COVID-19 wards". Health-care providers were challenged by working in a totally new context, exhaustion due to heavy workloads and protective gear, the fear of becoming infected and infecting others, feeling powerless to handle patients' conditions, and managing relationships in this stressful situation. The third category was "resilience amid challenges". Health-care providers identified many sources of social support and used self-management strategies to cope with the situation. They also achieved transcendence from this unique experience., Interpretation: The intensive work drained health-care providers physically and emotionally. Health-care providers showed their resilience and the spirit of professional dedication to overcome difficulties. Comprehensive support should be provided to safeguard the wellbeing of health-care providers. On April 25, 2015, a massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal at 2:11 pm (Beijing time). The 68-member-strong China International Search & Rescue Team (CISAR) left for Nepal at 6 am, April 26, to help with relief work. The CISAR was the first foreign team to rescue a survivor who was trapped beneath the rubble in the Gongabu area after the earthquake. On May 8, the team fulfilled the search-and-rescue mission and returned to Beijing. During the 2 weeks of rescue work, the team treated more than 3700 victims and cleared approximately 430 buildings. In this rescue mission, 10 experienced medical officers (including nine doctors and a nurse) from the General Hospital of Chinese People's Armed Police Force (PAP) comprised the medical team of CISAR. In this report, we focus on the medical rescues by CISAR and discuss the characteristics of the medical rescue in Nepal. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2018;12:536-538).

Background: Inconsistency in the prevalence of infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) in lung cancer patients was found between different countries with racial and geographic variations. Our previous reports have indicated that a high-risk HPV 16/18 DNA was frequently detected in Chinese lung cancer patients living in Taichung, Taiwan (Cheng et al. Cancer Res. 2001;61:2799-803). Thus, we conducted this study to verify whether there was a similar HPV 16/18 infection prevalence in lung cancer patients from Wuhan, China., Methods: To reduce the false positive HPV detection, the paraffin sections of 73 lung tumors and 34 non-cancer controls from Wuhan, China were collected for detection of the presence of HPV 16/18 DNA by in situ hybridization (ISH)., Results: Our results showed that the rates of HPV 16 and/or 18 infections in patients with lung tumors were significantly higher than in 34 non-cancer control subjects (26.0 versus 2.8% for HPV 16, P = 0.030; 23.3 versus 5.7% for HPV 18, P = 0.031; 27.7 versus 5.9% for HPV 16 or 18, P = 0.003) with a similar infection frequency of HPV 16 and 18 types in lung tumors. This result indicated that HPV 16/18 infection may be associated with lung cancer development in Chinese patients from Wuhan, China. Further statistical analyses revealed that HPV 16 or 18 infection was not correlated with any clinico-pathological parameter studied, including age, gender, smoking status, tumor type, tumor stage and tumor grades. Interestingly, smoking and male patients had a higher prevalence of HPV 16, although not reaching a statistical significance, compared with non-smoking and female patients, respectively (33.3% for smokers versus 20.0% non-smokers; 33.3% for male versus 17.6% for female). As compared with the HPV 16/18 infection in Taiwan, Chinese patients with lung cancer from Wuhan had a different HPV 16/18 infection prevalence., Conclusion: Difference in HPV 16/18 infection in lung cancer patients from Wuhan, China and Taichung, Taiwan suggests that HPV 16/18 might play a different role in lung cancer development among Chinese living in different areas.
