From late childhood, friendships as a distinct peer experience become increasingly salient in affecting individual development. This one-year longitudinal study examined same-domain and cross-domain effects of aggression and depression in friendships among early adolescents in China. Participants included 226 students (95 boys) within 113 friendship dyads initially in sixth grade (initial mean age = 12 years) in two public junior high schools. Data on aggression, depression, and friendship were collected from self-reports and peer nominations in 2017 and 2018. The results using the actor-partner interdependence model showed that friends' aggression positively predicted adolescents' later aggression and that friends' depression positively predicted adolescents' later depression, indicating same-domain contagion effects. In addition, friends' aggression positively predicted adolescents' later depression, indicating cross-domain cascading effects. The results suggest that adolescents with more aggressive friends are at risk for developing higher levels of social-behavioral and psychological problems with time. The results help understand the role of friendships in individual maladaptive development and are discussed in terms of the Chinese context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Outbreaks of hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS) caused by fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) and inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) related to FAdV-8b and FAdV-11 have been increased in chickens in China since 2015. Clinical concurrent infections of FAdV-4, FAdV-8b, and FAdV-11 are quite common, yet there are no commercially available trivalent vaccines against infection by these three serotypes. In our previous study, a bivalent vaccine based on a recombinant FAdV-4, of which fiber-1 was replaced with the fiber of FAdV-8b, has been developed. In this study, a novel recombinant rFAdV-4-fiber/8b + 11 was constructed by inserting FAdV-11 fiber gene into the 1966-bp deletion region of rFAdV-4-fiber/8b genome. The in vitro replication ability of the rFAdV-4-fiber/8b + 11 was similar to the parental FAdV-4. One dose immunization with the inactivated rFAdV-4-fiber/8b + 11 vaccine generated robust immune responses against FAdV-4, FAdV-8b, and FAdV-11, and provided efficient clinical protection against FAdV-4, FAdV-8b, and FAdV-11 challenge. This study provides a novel strategy for developing potential trivalent vaccines for the prevention and control of HHS and IBH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Depression is a major mental disorder and poses a serious threat to public health. Bullying victimization is identified as one of the major risk factors for depression in adolescence. Understanding the mechanism that explain why bullying victimization leads to depression, and identifying protective factors that could alleviate the negative effects of bullying victimization are pivotal to developing effective intervention programs. Methods: A sample of Chinese adolescents in junior high schools (N = 458, 50.58 % girls, M age = 11.63 years at T1) was followed for three years. The data on depression, bullying victimization, self-esteem, and friendship intimacy were collected from adolescents' self-report.Results: After controlling related variables, T1 bullying victimization positively predicted T3 depressive symptoms. T2 self-esteem mediated the link between T1 bullying victimization and T3 depressive symptoms when T1 friendship intimacy was low. More specifically, only for youth who reported low friendship intimacy, bullying victimization would lead to a lower level of self-esteem, which in turn, was associated with a higher level of depression.Limitations: The study only considered the roles of self-esteem as the mediator and friendship intimacy as the moderator. All measures were based on self-report.Conclusions: The results highlighted the role of friendship intimacy and self-esteem in the longitudinal relation between bullying victimization and depressive symptoms. The results suggest that intervention programs aiming at reducing victimized adolescents' depressive symptoms should consider the buffering effect of friendship intimacy. Fowl adenovirus serotype 11 (FAdV-11) is one of the main causative agents of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) in broilers. Outbreaks of FAdV-11-related IBH have been increasingly reported in China and many other geographical areas worldwide. However, the critical virulence factors of FAdV-11 remain uncertain due to the lack of technical platforms for efficient manipulation of FAdV-11 genome. Here, we reported the establishment of a FAdV-11 reverse genetic system based on a novel FAdV-11 Chinese isolate FJSW/2021 using the exonuclease combined with RecET (ExoCET), Redαβ recombineering and ccdB counter-selection techniques for the first time. A recombinant FAdV-11 was rescued efficiently by using the established reverse genetic platform through swapping the ORF11 gene of the FAdV-11 FJSW/2021 with the ZsGreen fluorescent protein expression cassette. This study provides an effective technical platform for identifying virulence factors of FAdV-11 and developing recombinant FAdV-11-vectored vaccine candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUCROSE , *OSMOREGULATION , *LILIES , *GENE expression , *EDIBLE plants , *MEDICINAL plants - Abstract
• The optimal concentration of sucrose inducing bulbil formatin was 262.93 mM. • The osmotic regulation, carbon source and signalling function of sucrose on bulbil formation was investigated. • Sucrose induced the expression of SUS2, SUT2 and WOX11 genes. Lilium lancifolium is an important ornamental, edible and medicinal plant in China.Bulbil is the main propagation organ of L.lancifolium. Studies have shown that high concentration of sucrose can significantly promote the formation of bulbil in vitro , but the detail function mechanism of sucrose on the process of bulbil formation in lily has not been reported. In this study, we investigated the osmotic regulation, carbon source and signal molecular functions of sucrose during bulbil formation using L.lancifolium as material. Results indicated that the optimal concentration of sucrose inducing bulbil formatin was 262.93 mM. The results of osmotic potential and soluble sugars experiments indicated that the effect of sucrose on bulbil formation of L.lancifolium was not connected to its osmotic potential, nor entirely explained by it's function as carbon source and energy. We used non-metabolic sugar analogues to study the effect of sucrose specific signaling on bulbil formation. Results indicated that exogenous 3-OMG could not induce bulbil formation. Whereas palatinose could induce bulbil formation, although the induction time was delayed compared with control, further indicating the specific signalling of sucrose. The results of sugar absorption inhibitor experiments showed that sucrose induced the bulbil formation by itself and by its decomposed hexose. In addition, gene expression analysis was performed in leaf axils. The results showed that high sucrose concentration may promote the formation of bulbil by inducing the expression of SUS2, SUT2 and WOX11 genes. Overall, the effect of sucrose on inducing bulbil formation could be explained by it's function of carbon source and signaling molecule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluates a model linking shyness, aspects of peer relations, and internalizing problems among young adolescents in the People's Republic of China. Participants were 547 young adolescents from Shanghai, China (46% boys; Mage = 10.35 years, SD = 0.77 years) who completed peer nominations of shyness, rejection, and victimization, and self‐report measures of loneliness, depression, and friendship support. Analyses demonstrated that peer difficulties (rejection, victimization) mediated the associations between shyness and internalizing problems. However, moderated mediation analyses revealed a protective effect for highly supportive friendships, especially for boys. Findings highlight the importance of considering different types of peer experiences in studies of shy young adolescents and are discussed in terms of importance to theory and intervention in China and elsewhere. The ability to intentionally control behavior to achieve specific goals helps children concentrate in school and behave appropriately in social situations. In Chinese culture, where self-regulation is highly valued by parents and teachers, children’s difficulties self-regulating may contribute to increased learning problems and subsequent authoritarian parenting. In this study we explored the longitudinal linkages among Chinese children’s self-regulation, learning problems, and authoritarian parenting using a developmental cascades model. Participants were N = 617 primary school students in Shanghai, P.R. China followed over three years from Grade 3-4 to Grade 5-6. Measures of children’s self-regulation, learning problems, and maternal authoritarian parenting were obtained each year from a combination of child self-reports and maternal and teacher ratings. Among the results: (1) compared with the unidirectional and bidirectional models, the developmental cascades model was deemed the best fit for the data; (2) earlier self-regulation negatively predicted later authoritarian parenting via a pathway through academic performance; (3) academic performance directly and indirectly contributed to greater self-regulation. Results are discussed in terms of the implications of self-regulation for Chinese children’s academic success and authoritarian parenting practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper decomposes and analyzes China's saving-investment imbalance (equivalent to current account imbalance) from 2002-2008. We first use the Flow of Funds Accounts to calculate the saving and investment rates (propensity) of the household, corporate and government sectors and to evaluate their relative contribution to the aggregate saving-investment surplus. The results indicate that the increase of saving-investment surplus can be attributed to the steady increase of saving by the household and government sectors and the short-term downsizing of investment by the corporate and government sectors. We then use more disaggregate supplementary datasets to explore the factors behind the evolution of the saving and investment rates for the three sectors. The rise of the household saving rate mainly sources from the urban sector. The corporate saving rate experienced a steady increase because of the rise of profitability. Government macroeconomic policies have had a strong influence on the saving and investment patterns of the corporate and government sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new wave of regional trade negotiations have sprung up in the Asia- Pacific region. China faces challenges and opportunities simultaneously. On the one hand, if China is excluded from major regional trade agreements, such as Trans-Pacific Partnership, it may hurt China's future growth. On the other hand, China can utilise the opportunities of regional trade negotiations to shape the new rules of international trade from the very early stage. Regional trade negotiations are also important for China because it needs further opening up to facilitate the domestic economic reform. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When measuring the nominal effective exchange rate (NEER), three factors should be considered: direct import competition, direct export competition and third market competition. The traditional NEER methodology using aggregated export trade data underestimates the competition between countries producing homogeneous goods, so that the weight of the effective exchange rates is too reliant on trade scale. Based on 2002 6-digit items of the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, this paper employs the competitive stress index to adjust the weighting system of the renminbi NEER for third market competition. In the new weighting system, European countries and some emerging economies have higher weights compared with some of the developed countries, including the USA, Japan and resources-dominated economies. This research will facilitate the understanding of changes in China's export competitiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fowl adenovirus serotype 11 (FAdV-11) is one of the primary causative agents of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), which causes substantial economic losses in the world poultry industry. In this study, we characterized the genome of the fowl adenovirus serotype 11 (FAdV-11) isolate FJSW/2021. The full genome of FJSW/2021 was 44, 154 base pairs (bp) in length and had a similar organization to that of previously reported FAdV-11 isolates. Notably, compared with those of other reported FAdV-11 strains, the preterminal protein (pTP) of FAdV-11 FJSW/2021 has six amino acid (aa) insertions (S-L-R-I-I-C) between 470 and 475 and one aa mutation of L476F; moreover, the tandem repeat (TR) regions of TR1 and TR2 were 33 bp (1 repeat) and 1,080 bp (8 repeats) shorter than those of the Canadian nonpathogenic isolate ON NP2, respectively. The pathogenicity of FJSW/2021 was studied in 10-day-old specific pathogen-free chicken embryos following allantoic cavity inoculation and in 1-day-old, 1-wk-old and 2-wk-old SPF chickens following intramuscular inoculation with 107 TCID 50 of the virus. The results showed that FJSW/2021 can induce typical severe IBH in chicks less than 2 wk old. These findings highlighted the genetic differences between the pathogenic and non-pathogenic FAdV-11 isolates. The data will provide guidance for identifying the virulence factors of FAdV-11 strains. The animal challenge model developed in our study will allow precise evaluation of the efficacy of potential FAdV-11 vaccine candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Due to rapid urbanization and modernization, individual competitiveness has become increasingly important for individuals to acquire success in the contemporary Chinese society. This 1-year longitudinal study examined the relations between maternal encouragement of competitiveness and adjustment in Chinese adolescents ( N = 1,493, 720 boys, M
age = 13 years). Maternal encouragement of competitiveness was assessed using child reports, and information on adolescents' adjustment was obtained from peer reports, teacher ratings, and school records. The results showed that maternal encouragement of competitiveness was negatively related to later teacher-rated learning problems. Moreover, maternal encouragement of competitiveness positively contributed to later peer-assessed assertiveness and social status among those who were initially high on assertiveness and social status. The results were discussed in the Chinese context. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved).- Published

- Abstract
Few studies have been conducted to examine the role shyness plays in friendship selection and influences processes, particularly how befriending shy peers affects individual's psychological adjustment. To address these gaps, this study investigated the selection, de-selection, same behavior influence effects of shyness in the friendship network in Chinese adolescents using the longitudinal social network analysis. It also explored the possible pathways that transmit indirect influences of friends' shyness to individual's psychological maladjustments (i.e., loneliness and depressive symptoms). A sample of adolescents (N = 1254, 48.4% girls, M
age = 13.20 years at Time 1) were followed for three years in middle schools. The results showed that adolescents tended to befriend those who had similar shyness level during T1-T2 interval, but the friendships between shy friends were more likely to terminate during T2-T3 interval. Moreover, adolescents were found to become more similar with their friends in shyness over time. The study also found that friends' shyness at T1 would influence individual's loneliness at T3 via 1) increasing friends' loneliness at T2 or 2) increasing individual's shyness level at T2. Those two pathways, however, were not found for depressive symptoms. These findings indicate that shyness plays an important role in the friendship formation and dissolution and befriending shy peers may have implications for adolescents' development of shyness and loneliness., (© 2021. - Abstract
A number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the 3'-UTR of genes have been proved to be contributed to the risk of cancers. Here, we determined an SNP rs4819388 in the 3'-UTR of B7-H2 gene in 183 gastric cancer patients and 348 healthy controls by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Statistical analysis results showed that the rs4819388 genotypes were significantly related to the occurrence of gastric cancer. Compared with the GG homozygotes, the GA heterozygotes were significantly more prevalent in the patients (OR=1.60, 95%CI=1.08-2.37). In addition, the A allelic frequencies were significantly higher than that of the G allele in the patients with lymphatic metastasis (p=0.034) and/or advanced TNM stage (p=0.032). Dual-luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-24 inhibited the expression of B7-H2 through binding with the B7-H2 3'-UTR, and this inhibitory role of miR-24 was impacted by rs4819388. Our findings suggest that the SNP rs4819388 in B7-H2 3'-UTR, through disrupting the regulatory role of miR-24 on B7-H2 expression, contributes to the occurrence of gastric cancer., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
