The international trade of waste in China has been growing for several years. In 2017, China announced that it would prohibit the importation of 24 different types of solid waste in 2018 to protect the environment and people's health. This study investigates the impact of China's import ban policy on waste, known as the National Sword Policy, using a difference-in-differences approach. We included 116 Chinese trading partners in the period between 2015 and 2019 before and after the import ban policy. We found that China's policy led to a 30% decrease in its import of unit value. Our results indicate that the trade dampening effect from the import ban policy dominates the quality effect. However, a quality effect exists when separating exporters according to income level. Furthermore, this policy affects Southeast Asian exporters more than non-Southeast Asian exporters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Short tandem repeats on the Y chromosome (Y-STRs), characterized by paternal inheritance, are valuable in forensic practice. Notably, the potential application of Y-STRs in pedigrees should be drawn upon, especially in China's surname-concentrated natural villages. The study focused on 50 Y-STRs, including 13 rapidly mutating (RM) Y-STRs that largely constitute the current Y-STR commercial kits, and determined the differences in these Y-STRs between branches in a large pedigree and the discriminatory power of these haplotypes in different units for male relatives. As indicated in the results, 14 inconsistencies were observed at 9 Y-STRs between 10 father-son pairs. In addition, these 50 Y-STR haplotypes discriminated 10 out of 47 father-son pairs, 106 of 148 cousin pairs, 70 of 119 uncle-nephew pairs, 17 of 39 brother pairs, and 14 out of 33 grandfather-grandson pairs in a large pedigree. In this study, the profiles of bacteria/phage-comediated antibiotic resistance genes (b/pARGs) were monitored in water samples collected from 45 pig farm wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in seven different regions of China. We found that 8 major types and 112 subtypes of b/pARGs were detected in all the water samples, and the detected number ranged from 53 to 92. The absolute abundances of bARGs and pARGs in the influent were as high as 109 copies/mL and 106 copies/mL, respectively. Anaerobic anoxic/oxic (AAO) and anaerobic short-cut nitrification/denitrification (ASND) treatment plants can effectively reduce the absolute abundance and amount of b/pARGs. Anaerobic treatment plants cannot reduce the absolute abundance of pARGs, and even increase the amount of pARGs. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs), bacterial communities and environmental factors were important factors impacting the b/pARG profile. Among these factors, the bacterial community was the major driver that impacted the bARG profile, while bacterial community and MGEs were the major codrivers impacting the pARG profile. • The distribution of ARGs and their hosts in pig farm A/O WWTPs is revealed. • Genome bins are used to explore the ARG hosts in pig farm A/O WWTPs. • Dominant denitrifying bacteria are important ARG hosts in pig farm A/O WWTPs. The anoxic-oxic (A/O) wastewater treatment process that is widely used in pig farms in China is an important repository for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the distribution of ARGs and their hosts in the A/O process has not been well characterized. In this study, the wastewaters in the anoxic and oxic tanks for A/O processes were collected from 38 pig farms. The concentrations of 20 subtypes of ARGs, 5 denitrification-related genes, 2 integrons, and bacterial community composition were investigated. Bacterial genome binning was performed using metagenome sequencing. In this study, 20 subtypes of ARGs and integrons were detected in all sampling sites. A total of 16 of the 20 subtypes of ARGs were detected with the highest abundance in anoxic tanks, and sul1 was detected with a maximum average abundance of 19.21 ± 0.24 log 10 (copies/mL). Cooccurrence patterns were observed for some genes in the pig farm A/O process, such as sul1 and intl1 , sul1 and tetG , and tetO and tetW. There was a significant cooccurrence pattern between the dominant denitrifying bacteria and some ARGs (bla TEM , ermB, tetC , tetH and tetQ), so the dominant denitrifying bacteria were considered to be potential ARG hosts. In addition, 170 highly abundant bacterial genome bins were assembled and further confirmed that the denitrifying bacteria Brachymonas , Candidatus Competibacter , Thiobacillus and Steroidobacter were the important ARG hosts in the pig farm A/O process, providing a useful reference for the surveillance and risk management of ARGs in pig farm wastewater. With climate change and intensive aquaculture development, environmental hypoxia in aquaculture water has become a common challenge for many aquatic species. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the hypoxic tolerance of animals through nutritional strategies. This study explored the positive role of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation in enhancing hypoxia tolerance of juvenile Eriocheir sinensis through respiratory regulation and alleviation of hypoxia-induced neural excitotoxicity. Acute hypoxia stress significantly up-regulated the mRNA expression level of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, oxygen consumption rate and anaerobic respiratory metabolism-related enzyme activities. On the other hand, aerobic respiratory metabolism-related enzyme activities were significantly decreased. However, dietary GABA supplementation remodeled the respiratory metabolism pattern of juvenile crabs exposed to hypoxia stress. In addition, acute hypoxic stress significantly increased the contents of free glutamate and GABA in the nervous tissue. The expression levels of N-Methyl-d-aspartate-related receptor genes and calcium-dependent degradation enzyme-related genes were significantly up-regulated. Similarly, neuronal apoptosis rates, expression levels of apoptosis-related genes, and vesicular glutamate transporter genes were also significantly increased. The high-affinity neuronal glutamate transporter decreased significantly in the crabs exposed to hypoxia stress. However, dietary GABA supplementation could effectively prevent acute hypoxia stress-induced neural excitotoxicity. Furthermore, dietary GABA could significantly improve the redox status in vivo exposed to hypoxia stress. In conclusion, acute hypoxia stress can affect respiratory metabolism and redox state and induce neural excitotoxicity in juvenile E. sinensis. Current research focusing on forensic personal identification, phenotype inference and ancestry information on single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has been widely reported. In the present study, we focused on tetra-allelic SNPs in the Chinese Han population. A total of 48 tetra-allelic SNPs were screened out from the Chinese Han population of the 1000 Genomes Database, including Chinese Han in Beijing (CHB) and Chinese Han South (CHS). Considering the forensic genetic requirement for the polymorphisms, only 11 tetra-allelic SNPs with a heterozygosity >0.06 were selected for further multiplex panel construction. In order to meet the demands of personal identification and parentage identification, an additional 8 tri-allelic SNPs were combined into the final multiplex panel. To ensure application in the degraded DNA analysis, all the PCR products were designed to be 87-188 bp. Employing multiple PCR reactions and SNaPshot minisequencing, 511 unrelated Chinese Han individuals from Sichuan were genotyped. The combined match probability (CMP), combined discrimination power (CDP), and cumulative probability of exclusion (CPE) of the panel were 6.07 × 10 -11 , 0.9999999999393 and 0.996764, respectively. Based on the population data retrieved from the 1000 Genomes Project, Fst values between Chinese Han in Sichuan (SCH) and all the populations included in the 1000 Genomes Project were calculated. Objective: To assess the association of programmed cell death 1 (PDCD1) gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility and/or progression of colorectal cancer., Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was carried out, which recruited 426 colorectal cancer patients and 500 healthy individuals. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms, namely rs36084323, rs11568821, rs2227981, rs2227982 and rs10204525, were selected for the study and genotyped with a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay., Results: The G allele of rs36084323 under a dominant model was associated with increased risk of advanced TNM staging of colorectal cancer progression (OR=1.59, 95%CI=1.02-2.48). Haplotypes G-G-C-T-A and A-G-C-C-G of the rs36084323, rs11568821, rs2227981, rs2227982, and rs10204525 were negatively associated with the occurrence of colorectal cancer., Conclusion: The G allele of rs36084323 is associated with increased risk of advanced TNM staging of colorectal cancer. Conversely, the incidence of colorectal cancer is negatively associated with the haplotypes G-G-C-T-A and A-G-C-C-G of rs36084323, rs11568821, rs2227981, rs2227982, and rs10204525.
