Germplasm resources are the source of herbal medicine production. The cultivation of superior germplasm resources helps to resolve the conflict between long-term population persistence and growing market demand by consistently producing materials with high quality. The fern species Cibotium barometz is the original plant of cibotii rhizoma ("Gouji"), a traditional Chinese medicine used in the therapy of pain, weakness, and numbness in the lower extremities. Long-history medicinal use has caused serious wild population decline in China. Without sufficient understanding of the species and lineage diversity of Cibotium, it is difficult to propose a targeted conservation scheme at present, let alone select high-quality germplasm resources. In order to fill such a knowledge gap, this study sampled C. barometz and relative species throughout their distribution in China, performed genome skimming to obtain plastome data, and conducted phylogenomic analyses. We constructed a well-supported plastome phylogeny of Chinese Cibotium, which showed that three species with significant genetic differences are distributed in China, namely C. barometz, C. cumingii, and C. sino-burmaense sp. nov., a cryptic species endemic to NW Yunnan and adjacent regions of NE Myanmar. Moreover, our results revealed two differentiated lineages of C. barometz distributed on the east and west sides of a classic phylogeographic boundary that was probably shaped by monsoons and landforms. We also evaluated the resolution of nine traditional barcode loci and designed five new DNA barcodes based on the plastome sequence that can distinguish all these species and lineages of Chinese Cibotium accurately. These novel findings on a genetic basis will guide conservation planners and medicinal plant breeders to build systematic conservation plans and exploit the germplasm resources of Cibotium in China. Known for its rich history and culture, Qingdao is a typical symbol of Chinese maritime culture. Its unique genetic landscape has aroused interest among geneticists and forensic scientists. However, the genetic landscape of Qingdao has never been uncovered. This investigation intends to provide light on Qingdao's paternal genetic diversity and its evolutionary connections to other Han subgroups. The genetic polymorphisms of 41 Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci in the Qingdao Han were investigated using SureID® PathFinder Plus Kit. Phylogenetic studies were performed using genotype data from 52 East Asian groups at 23 common Y-STR loci. A multidimensional scaling plot and cladogram were constructed. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was carried out for predicting categories among the Han people. The k-nearest neighbour (kNN) algorithm was utilised to designate Y-SNP haplogroups for each haplotype. The Qingdao Han were genetically far from the Tibeto-Burman populations and close with the Han people from northern China. LDA indicated a deep integration among the present-day Han people. By the kNN model, the predicted O2a2 and O2a1 were shown to be the predominant Y-SNP haplogroups. Isotopic compositions of antimony (Sb) in airborne particles could reveal the sources and geochemical processes of Sb. Today, the precise analysis of the Sb isotopic ratio in airborne particles is still challenging due to technical difficulties in the sampling and pretreatment processes. In this study, traditional methods of sampling and pretreatment of Sb in airborne particles were optimized to meet the isotope measurement requirements. Suitable digestion methods were suggested for various membrane filters (MF) of different materials and brands, and the Sb blank values in these membrane filters were compared. The results showed that the Whatman brand quartz microfiber MF had the lowest Sb blank value (1.13 ng cm−2), and could meet the needs of continuous large flow sampling, making it the most ideal MF for sampling Sb in airborne particles for the subsequent measurement of Sb isotope ratios. Synthetic samples of the MF spiked with certified reference materials (CRMs) were digested and tested. Nearly identical ε123Sb values were observed among CRMs, (MF + CRMs), and (MF + CRMs) subtracting the content proportion of MF, which indicated that the isotope fractionation occurred during the pretreatment was negligible, and that the Sb isotopic composition of airborne particulate matter was basically not affected by the Whatman brand quartz microfiber MF. Mt. Gongga area in southwest China was impacted by Hg emissions from industrial activities and coal combustion, and annual means of atmospheric TGM and PHg concentrations at a regional background station were 3.98 ng m−3 and 30.7 pg m−3, respectively. This work presents a mass balance study of Hg in an upland forest in this area. Atmospheric deposition was highly elevated in the study area, with the annual mean THg deposition flux of 92.5 μg m−2 yr−1. Total deposition was dominated by dry deposition (71.8%), and wet deposition accounted for the remaining 28.2%. Forest was a large pool of atmospheric Hg, and nearly 76% of the atmospheric input was stored in forest soil. Volatilization and stream outflow were identified as the two major pathways for THg losses from the forest, which yielded mean output fluxes of 14.0 and 8.6 μg m−2 yr−1, respectively. This study investigated the effects of foliar application of fulvic acid antitranspirant (FA-AT) on Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) and Riesling grapes and wines in a warm viticulture region of China. FA-AT controlled the contents of total soluble solids, fructose and glucose in mature grapes and alcohol in wines. FA-AT improved total phenols and flavonoids in Riesling grapes, and total tannin and individual flavanols in CS grapes and wine, while reducing total individual phenolic acids and flavonols in CS wine. Increased volatiles in CS grapes (hexyl acetate, linalool) and wine (isoamyl alcohol, 1-hexanol, 2-phenylethanol) detected by SPME–GC–MS can contribute to the fruity and floral aroma. FA-AT reduced the accumulation of anthocyanins in CS grapes and wine without an eventual reduction in the tonality of wine by sensory analysis, and improved the taste and balance of Riesling wine. Hutai-8 (Vitis vinifera × Vitis labrusca) is a table grape widely cultivated in China. In order to determine the changes in volatile profile and aroma potential during berry ripening, a total of 84 free and 73 bound aroma compounds were identified and quantified using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Aldehydes and esters were found to be the main volatile compounds in Hutai-8. They accumulated up to 70 days after flowering (DAF) and then decreased. Bound esters and alcohols were prominent. The concentration of bound esters in Hutai-8 at DAF80 was 714.90 µg/L. β-Damascenone, hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal, (E)-2-nonenal, and ethyl octanoate significantly contributed to the volatile profile of Hutai-8. The odor activity value (OAV) of hexanal was the highest at DAF80, reaching 351.51. β-Damascenone mainly appeared midway through the maturation process, reaching a concentration of 12.79 µg/L. The majority of free components reached a maximum in DAF70, while the bound components continuously accumulated throughout the mature period. Newly built reservoirs are regarded as sensitive ecosystem for mercury (Hg) methylation. A comprehensive study was conducted to understand the influence of damming on the distribution and methylation of Hg within a river-reservoir ecosystem in Wujiang River Basin (WRB), Southwest China. Hg species in inflow-outflow rivers of six cascade reservoirs were analyzed each month during 2006. Mean concentrations of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in river water in WRB were 3.41 ± 1.98 ng L −1 and 0.15 ± 0.06 ng L −1 , respectively. THg and particulate Hg (PHg) concentrations in outflow rivers of reservoirs significantly decreased after dam construction, suggesting that a considerable amount of PHg was intercepted by way of sedimentation. However, the influence of damming on the distributions of dissolved Hg (DHg) and reactive Hg (RHg) in rivers was less pronounced. MeHg concentrations in outflow rivers of the older reservoirs significantly increased compared to inflow rivers with the maximum increasing factor of 92%, indicating the active net Hg methylation in the reservoirs. However, the difference between MeHg in inflow rivers and outflow rivers were less pronounced in the newly constructed reservoirs, indicating that these reservoirs were not active sites of Hg methylation. The construction of the cascade reservoirs resulted in the elevation of MeHg in several sections of the Wujiang River, which attributed to the net Hg methylation in reservoirs and discharge of MeHg from hypolimnion. MeHg-enriched water in outflow rivers from hypolimnetic water could be transported to downstream, posing potential threat to the aquatic food web and human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A comprehensive study was conducted in July 2006, January 2007 and March 2007 to determine the impacts of some major physicochemical parameters on the level of mercury (Hg) in Puding Reservoir, Guizhou, China. The concentrations of Hg species in the summer campaign were significantly higher (p <0.01, generally 2 to 3 times higher) than those in the winter and spring campaigns, and no statistical differences were found between the same parameters for the latter two campaigns (p >0.05). Ancillary parameters including suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, nitrate (NO3 −) and chloride (Cl−) were also measured. During the sampling campaign in July 2006, average values for SPM, DOC, T, and NO3 − were all higher compared to the other two campaigns, which suggested a similar seasonal trend between these parameters and Hg species. Seasonal variability may be related to increased runoff. High runoff volume due to abundant precipitation in the summer carried Hg-laden particulates into the reservoir, whereas there was less precipitation in the winter and spring when Hg levels were lower. In agricultural lands with selenium (Se) deficiency, bioavailability of Se in plants is low. Residents from large-scale agricultural production areas with Se deficiency often suffer from endemic diseases because of consumption of agricultural products lacking in Se. One such area in Northeast China where Keshan disease and Kashin-Beck disease originated, was selected for investigating the geochemistry, influencing factors, and risks of Se in the agroecosystems. Analysis of field samples indicates that the Se deficiency in soil is significantly reduced compared with that of several decades ago, and 62.6% of soils are now Se-sufficient in the southern Songnen Plain. However, Se in crop products remains low due to weak soil-plant transfer, resulting in high risks of Se deficiency related diseases in the rural population of this area. Structural equation modeling, principal component analysis, and other statistical analyses revealed that climate conditions and soil physical and chemical properties are the key factors influencing the spatial distribution of soil Se. Extensive use of agricultural fertilizers may indirectly inhibit the migration of Se from soil to plants. The aim of this work, which was conducted in 2017 and 2018, was to gain insight into the effects of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) treatments on the content of soluble sugars, organic acids and endogenous hormones in Cabernet Sauvignon. The RDI treatments slightly decreased the hundred-grain weight and total acid content before vintage but significantly increased the soluble solids content, juice pH and reducing sugar content. The glucose and fructose contents were increased by the RDI treatments, and the ratio of G:F was reduced. Most genes associated with sugar unloading were upregulated by RDI, especially in the RDI1 group. The tartaric acid, malic acid and citric acid contents were decreased by RDI. Under the RDI treatments, the ABA content increased from E-L 33 to 38, and the IAA, GA 3 , JA-Me and BR contents decreased from E-L 33 to 34. The health hazard of mercury (Hg) compounds is internationally recognized, and the main pathways for methylmercury (MeHg) intake in humans are through consumption of food, especially fish. Given the large releases of Hg to the environment in China, combined with the fast development of hydropower, this issue deserves attention. Provided similar mobilization pathways of Hg in China as seen in reservoirs in North America and Europe one should expect increased Hg contamination in relation to future hydropower reservoir construction in this country. This study presents total Hg (THg) concentrations in wild fish from six Guizhou reservoirs, China. The THg concentrations in fish were generally low despite high background levels in the bedrock and depositions from local point sources. The over all mean +/- SD concentration of THg was (0.066 +/- 0.078) microg/g (n = 235). After adjusting for among-reservoir variation in THg, there were significant differences in THg among functional groups of the fish, assumed to reflect trophic levels. Predicted THg-concentration ratios, retrieved from a mixed linear model, between the functional groups were 9:4:4:1 for carnivorous, omnivorous, planktivorous and herbivorous fish. This result indicated that MeHg accumulation may prevail even under circumstances with short food chains as in this Chinese water system. No fish exceeded recommended maximum THg limit for human consumption set by World Health Organization and the Standardization Administration of China (0.5 microg/g fish wet weight (ww)). Only six fish (2.5%) exceeded the maximum THg limit set by US Environmental Protection Agency (0.3 microg/g fish ww).
