Contributing to contemporary studies on knowledge workers, this paper aims to conceptualize the four critical challenges for editors in the Chinese publishing industry under the framework of political economy. These challenges, as a result of fundamental social changes, including technological, political and economic ones, and, most importantly, changes in class relations and power dynamics are the following: challenges related to technological change, challenges of how to follow the political principle in the media marketization process, challenges brought about by the smashing of the work-unit system, and challenges resulting from internal divisions within knowledge workers. Moreover, by incorporating findings discovered in the case studies of two publishing houses in Shanghai, this paper addresses the wider social relationship between communication and the institutional power structure in which editors, and knowledge workers in general, are situated. Some disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water present a potential safety concern. This study focuses on the elements influencing DBPs formation. A total of 120 water samples were collected from 10 different drinking water facilities spanning 5 counties within Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) were observed to be 14.5 and 27.4 μg/L, respectively, constituting 34 and 64% of the total DBPs. Seasonal fluctuations demonstrated that HAAs, THMs, halonitromethanes (HNMs), and haloacetonitriles (HANs) followed a similar pattern with higher levels in summer or autumn compared to spring. Importantly, the concentrations of HAAs and THMs were markedly higher in Taihu-sourced water compared to other sources. Geographically, Nanxun exhibited the highest levels of total DBPs, HAAs, and THMs, while Deqing and Changxing demonstrated significantly lower levels. Correlation studies between water quality parameters and DBPs revealed that factors such as chloride content, temperature, and residual chlorine positively influenced DBPs formation, whereas turbidity negatively affected it. Principal component analysis suggested similar formation processes for HANs, haloketones (HKs), HNMs, and THMs. Factors such as temperature, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and residual chlorine were identified as significant contributors to the prevalence of HAAs.

Background: The research of the sensitivity and specificity point-of-care testing (POCT) of D-dimer as a diagnostic protocol for differential diagnosis of Stanford Type A aortic syndrome (hereafter as TAAS) mimicking ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) with regular STEMI in the emergency department is limited., Methods: Full medical information of 32 patients confirmed TAAS and 527 patients confirmed STEMI from January 1st, 2016 to October 1st, 2021 were retrospectively analyzed in Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital of Tongji University., Results: The baseline characteristics of two groups of patients were well-balanced post propensity score matching (PSM) analysis, and each group had 32 patients enrolled. Patients in the STEMI group had higher positive cardiac troponin I (cTNI) (0.174 ng/ml vs. 0.055 ng/ml, P = 0.008) results but lower D-dimer (0.365μg/ml vs. 31.50μg/ml, P < 0.001) results than the TAAS group. The D-dimer cutoff value of 2.155μg/ml had the best sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 96.9%, and the positive predictive value (PPV) as well as the negative predictive value (NPV) of the cutoff value were 96.9 and 100%, respectively, in total 64 patients, the area under the curve (AUC) values were 0.998 (95% CI:0.992-1.000, P < 0.001) for the D-dimer. No significant correlation between the D-dimer concentration and the time from symptoms onset to first medical contact in both groups (TAAS group: r = - 0.248, P = 0.170; STEMI group: r = - 0.159, P = 0.383) or significant correlation between D-dimer and creatine clearance (TAAS group: r = - 0.065, P = 0.765; STEMI group: r = 0.222, P = 0.221). The total in-hospital mortality for the patients with TAAS presenting as STEMI was 62.5% (20/32). The mortality rate for TAAS patients confirmed by computed tomography angiography (CTA) was significantly lower (40% vs. 82.4%, P = 0.014) than the mortality rate for TAAS patients confirmed by coronary angiography (CAG) and had a longer average survival time (log-rank = 0.015), less peri-surgical complications especially gastrointestinal hemorrhage (0.00% vs. 55.6%, P < 0.001). CTA diagnosis can reduce the mortality rate by 67.5% (95%CI:0.124-0.850, P = 0.16)., Conclusions: The POCT D-dimer with cut-off 2.155μg/ml would be useful to rule-out TAAS mimicking STEMI from regular STEMI prior to reperfusion therapy. CTA diagnosis is effective in reducing the probability of perioperative complications and lowering perioperative mortality than CAG diagnosis in TAAS patients., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Background: Smoking behavior is influenced by multiple genes, including the bitter taste gene TAS2R38. It has been reported that the correlation between TAS2R38 and smoking behavior has ethnicity-based differences. However, the TAS2R38 status in Chinese smokers is still unclear., Objective: This study aims to investigate the possible relationship between genetic variations in TAS2R38 (A49P, V262A and I296V) and smoking behaviors in the Han Chinese population., Methods: The haplotype analyses were performed and smoking behavior questionnaire was completed by 1271 individuals. Genetic association analyses for smoking behavior were analyzed using chi-square test. Further, for investigating the molecular mechanism of TAS2R38 variants effect on smoking behavior, we conducted TAS2R38-PAV and TAS2R38-AVI expression plasmids and tested the cellular calcium assay by cigarette smoke compounds stimulus in HEK293., Results: Significant associations of genetic variants within TAS2R38 were identified with smoking behavior. We found a higher PAV/PAV frequency than AVI/AVI in moderate and high nicotine dependence (FTND ≥ 4; X 2  = 4.611, 1 df, p = 0.032) and strong cigarette smoke flavor intensity preference (X 2  = 4.5383, 1 df, p = 0.033) in participants. Furthermore, in the in vitro cellular calcium assay, total particle matter (TPM), N-formylnornicotine and cotinine, existing in cigarette smoke, activated TAS2R38-PAV but not TAS2R38-AVI-transfected cells., Conclusion: Our data highlights that genetic variations in TAS2R38 are related to smoking behavior, especially nicotine dependence and cigarette smoke flavor intensity preference. Background: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy occurs in response to numerous stimuli and precedes heart failure (HF). Therapies that ameliorate pathological cardiac hypertrophy are highly needed., Methods: The expression level of miR-30d was analyzed in hypertrophy models and serum of patients with chronic heart failure by qRT-PCR. Gain and loss-of-function experiments of miR-30d were performed in vitro. miR-30d gain of function were performed in vivo. Bioinformatics, western blot, luciferase assay, qRT-PCR, and immunofluorescence were performed to examine the molecular mechanisms of miR-30d., Findings: miR-30d was decreased in both murine and neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) models of hypertrophy. miR-30d overexpression ameliorated phenylephrine (PE) and angiotensin II (Ang II) induced hypertrophy in NRCMs, whereas the opposite phenotype was observed when miR-30d was downregulated. Consistently, the miR-30d transgenic rat was found to protect against isoproterenol (ISO)-induced pathological hypertrophy. Mechanistically, methyltransferase EZH2 could promote H3K27me3 methylation in the promotor region of miR-30d and suppress its expression during the pathological cardiac hypertrophy. miR-30d prevented pathological cardiac hypertrophy via negatively regulating its target genes MAP4K4 and GRP78 and inhibiting pro-hypertrophic nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT). Adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotype 9 mediated-miR-30d overexpression exhibited beneficial effects in murine hypertrophic model. The level of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) protein and gene expression in breast cancer is an essential factor in judging the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Several investigations have shown high intraobserver and interobserver variability in the evaluation of HER2 staining by visual examination. In this study, we aim to propose an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted microscope to improve the HER2 assessment accuracy and reliability. Our AI-assisted microscope was equipped with a conventional microscope with a cell-level classification-based HER2 scoring algorithm and an augmented reality module to enable pathologists to obtain AI results in real time. We organized a three-round ring study of 50 infiltrating duct carcinoma not otherwise specified (NOS) cases without neoadjuvant treatment, and recruited 33 pathologists from 6 hospitals. In the first ring study (RS1), the pathologists read 50 HER2 whole-slide images (WSIs) through an online system. After a 2-week washout period, they read the HER2 slides using a conventional microscope in RS2. After another 2-week washout period, the pathologists used our AI microscope for assisted interpretation in RS3. The consistency and accuracy of HER2 assessment by the AI-assisted microscope were significantly improved (p < 0.001) over those obtained using a conventional microscope and online WSI. Specifically, our AI-assisted microscope improved the precision of immunohistochemistry (IHC) 3 + and 2 + scoring while ensuring the recall of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)-positive results in IHC 2 + . Also, the average acceptance rate of AI for all pathologists was 0.90, demonstrating that the pathologists agreed with most AI scoring results., (© 2021. Background: Taste preference varies geographically in China. However, studies on Chinese people's taste preference in different regions of China are limited, and are lack of research on the mechanism of differences in taste preference, especially in genetics., Objective: This study aims to investigate the characteristics of taste preference of Chinese men, and estimate whether diverse taste preference in Chinese have genetic underpinning., Methods: We conducted a questionnaire survey on taste preferences on 1076 males from 10 regions of China, and collected another 1427 males from the same regions which genotyped by microarray. We compared the correlation between different taste preference, and evaluated the correlation between the mutation frequency of inhouse database and different taste preference. The putative taste-preference-related genes were further utilized to estimate the candidate relationship on gene and gene network in different taste preference., Results: There was a correlation between different taste preferences in Chinese men. We found 31 SNPs associated with 6 kind of taste preferences. These SNPs located within or nearby 36 genes, and the tastes associated with 4 of these genes (TRPV1, AGT, ASIC2 and GLP1R) are consistent with the previous studies. Moreover, in different tastes which were suggested to be associated with each other, some putative related genes were the same or in the same gene network, such as pathways related with blood pressure, response to stimulus and nervous system., Conclusions: This study indicates that the diverse taste preference of Chinese men may have genetic underpinning.

To investigate the prevalence of lipophilic marine biotoxins in shellfish from the Chinese market, we used hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to measure levels of okadaic acid (OA), azaspiracid (AZA1), pectenotoxin (PTX2), gymnodimine (GYM), and spirolide (SPX1). We collected and analyzed 291 shellfish samples from main production sites along a wide latitudinal transect along the Chinese coastline from December 2008 to December 2009. Results revealed a patchy distribution of the five toxins and highlighted the specific geographical distribution and seasonal and species variation of the putative toxigenic organisms. All five lipophilic marine biotoxins were found in shellfish samples. The highest concentrations of OA, AZA1, PTX2, GYM, and SPX1 were 37.3, 5.90, 16.4, 14.4, and 8.97 μg/kg, respectively. These values were much lower than the legislation limits for lipophilic shellfish toxins. However, the value might be significantly underestimated for the limited detection toxins. Also, these toxins were found in most coastal areas of China and were present in almost all seasons of the year. Thus, these five toxins represent a potential threat to human health. Consequently, studies should be conducted and measures should be taken to ensure the safety of the harvested product.
