This article introduces the use of Internet-mediated joint construction (JC) to engage second language (L2) writers to participate in virtual classroom activities in an online teaching environment. Affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, schools and universities in the People's Republic of China were required to rapidly transit to remote teaching. The switch from the traditional classroom-based scenarios to the online environment was challenging for teachers. One of the extreme difficulties is to engage students in virtual-class activities. To address this issue, the authors designed an Internet-mediated JC teaching practice and implemented it on ClassIn, an online teaching platform for one semester. Analysis of students' after-class online surveys and interviews suggested that the Internet-mediated JC practice helped students to build a connected network and thus engaged them in actively interacting with both the teacher and peers in the online environment. Pedagogical implications are discussed to contribute to the teaching practice of L2 online writing instruction.

To retrospectively explore the characteristics of plasma amino acids (PAAs) in children with autism spectrum disorder and their clinical association via case-control study. A total of 110 autistic and 55 healthy children were recruited from 2014 to 2018. The clinical phenotypes included severity of autism, cognition, adaptability, and regression. Compared with the control group, autistic children had significantly elevated glutamate, [gamma]-Amino-n-butyric acid, glutamine, sarcosine, [delta]-aminolevulinic acid, glycine and citrulline. In contrast, their plasma level of ethanolamine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, homocysteine, pyroglutamic acid, hydroxyproline, ornithine, histidine, lysine, and glutathione were significantly lower. Elevated neuroactive amino acids (glutamate) and decreased essential amino acids were mostly distinct characteristics of PAAs of autistic children. Increased level of tryptophan might be associated with severity of autism.

Karst landforms are widely distributed in southern China. The terrain and soil properties in karst basins are complex, which results in high spatial heterogeneity of the ecological environment and soil organic matter (SOM) in karst watersheds. To investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of SOM in different land uses in the karst plateau basin, a total of 3,816 soil samples were taken from 568 soil profiles. The soil animals and different soil properties were recorded, and the concentration of SOM was tested using the potassium dichromate method in the laboratory. Then, the changes in the SOM content associated with soil animals and the soil properties associated with the different land use types were analyzed. The results showed a large discrepancy in SOM in the karst plateau basin. The average values of SOM in different soil layers were between 9.23 g kg-1 and 59.39 g kg-1. The SOM decreased in the following order: forestland > grassland > barren land > cultivated land > garden land. The SOM in soil in which soil animals are present is generally greater than that in the absence of soil animals, and the SOM partially increases with soil species diversity. Agrotis segetum is the main soil animal species that positively affects the distribution of organic matter in the surface soil layer. The SOM in soil with the phylum Annelida is much greater than that in soils with other animals, and earthworms are the main contributor. The structure of soil animal species is complex, and the change trend of SOM is stable. The major positive factors affecting soil animal diversity are soil thickness, soil humidity and soil structure, and rock outcrops are the main negative factor. In summary, good land use can increase animal diversity and abundance in soil, which promotes soil organic matter accumulation. Moreover, microtopography is an important factor that influences soil organic matter accumulation in karst basins and further affects the restructuring of the spatial distribution of soil organic matter. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a highly prevalent head and neck malignancy in southern China frequently diagnosed at advanced stages owing to subtle early symptoms and associated metastasis. Angiogenesis emerges as a pivotal factor in NPC progression, with numerous angiogenesis-related factors showing aberrant expression and contributing to increased neovascularization within NPC tumors. These abnormal vessels not only nourish tumor growth but also facilitate metastasis, culminating in unfavorable patient outcomes. Multiple studies have demonstrated the applicability of various imaging techniques for assessing angiogenesis in NPC tumors, thus serving as a foundation for personalized treatment strategies and prognostic assessments. Anti-angiogenic therapies have exhibited significant potential for inhibiting NPC angiogenesis and exerting anti-tumor effects. To enhance efficacy, anti-angiogenic drugs are frequently combined with other treatment modalities to synergistically enhance anti-tumor effects while mitigating the side effects associated with single-agent therapies, consequently improving patient prognosis. Identifying the potential mechanisms and key targets underlying NPC angiogenesis and exploring more effective detection and treatment approaches holds promise for shaping the future of NPC diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, thereby offering new avenues and perspectives for research and clinical practice. Tylopilus brunneirubens is a common species in southern China. It is known for brown to dark brown pileus, white context turning reddish brown or rust brown when touched and distinct reticulation on the upper stem. However, little is known about its mitochondrial genome and its relationship with other boletes. Our analysis revealed that the mitochondrial genome of this species is a circular DNA molecule that spans 32,389 bp. It contains 15 core protein-coding genes, 24 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The base composition of the mitochondrial genome is as follows: A (37.20%), C (11.32%), G (12.48%), and T (39.00%), with a GC content of 23.80%. Furthermore, a phylogenetic tree based on 24 mitochondrial genomes provided valuable insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Tylopilus brunneirubens with other boletes for the first time. Among persons born in China before 1980 and tested for vaccinia virus Tiantan strain (VVT), 28.7% (137/478) had neutralizing antibodies, 71.4% (25/35) had memory B-cell responses, and 65.7% (23/35) had memory T-cell responses to VVT. Background: Ciprofol (HSK3486) is a novel intravenous anesthetic agent that bears structural similarity to propofol and displays favorable pharmacodynamic characteristics such as rapid onset and offset. The meta-analysis aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of ciprofol versus propofol in clinical practice. Methods: Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library were searched from inception to April 2023. The primary outcome was success rate of sedation/ anesthetic induction and differences in sedation/induction time. The secondary outcomes included risks of hemodynamic instability, respiratory complications, and pain on injection, as well as recovery profiles, satisfaction score, and top-up dose requirement. Results: Twelve RCTs (sedation: n = 6, anesthetic induction, n = 6, all conducted in China) involving 1,793 patients (age: 34–58 years) published from 2021 to 2023 were analyzed. Pooled results revealed no differences in success rate [risk ratio (RR) = 1, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99 to 1.01, I² = 0%, 1,106 patients, p = 1] and time required for successful anesthetic induction/sedation [mean difference (MD) = 7.95 s, 95% CI: −1.09 to 16.99, I² = 97%, 1,594 patients, p = 0.08]. The risks of top-up dose requirement (RR = 0.94, p = 0.48), cardiopulmonary complications [i.e., bradycardia (RR = 0.94, p = 0.67), tachycardia (RR = 0.83, p = 0.68), hypertension (RR = 1.28, p = 0.2), hypoxemia/pulmonary depression (RR = 0.78, p = 0.24)], and postoperative nausea/vomiting (RR = 0.85, p = 0.72), as well as discharge time (MD = 1.39 min, p = 0.14) and satisfaction score (standardized MD = 0.23, p = 0.16) did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, the ciprofol group had lower risks of hypotension (RR = 0.85, p = 0.02) and pain on injection (RR = 0.17, p < 0.00001) than the propofol group. The time to full alertness was statistically shorter in the propofol group (i.e., 0.66 min), but without clinical significance. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated similar efficacy between ciprofol and propofol for sedation and anesthetic induction, while ciprofol was associated with lower risks of hypotension and pain on injection. Introduction: Duck circovirus (DuCV) infection is currently recognized as an important immunosuppressive disease in commercial duck flocks in China. Specific antibodies against DuCV viral proteins are required to improve diagnostic assays and understand the pathogenesis of DuCV infection. Methodsand results: To generate DuCV-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), a recombinant DuCV capsid protein without the first 36 N-terminal amino acids was produced in Escherichia coli. Using the recombinant protein as an immunogen, a mAb was developed that reacted specifically with the DuCV capsid protein, expressed in E. coli and baculovirus systems. Using homology modeling and recombinant truncated capsid proteins, the antibody-binding epitope was mapped within the region of 144IDKDGQIV151, which is exposed to solvent in the virion capsid model structure. To assess the applicability of the mAb to probe the native virus antigen, the murine macrophage cell line RAW267.4 was tested for DuCV replicative permissiveness. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis revealed that the mAb recognized the virus in infected cells and the viral antigen in tissue samples collected from clinically infected ducks. The mixed infection of duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) and goose astrovirus (GoAstV) is an important problem that endangers the goose industry. Although quantitative PCR has been widely used in monitoring these two viruses, there is no reliable method to detect them at the same time. In this study, by analyzing the published genomes of DTMUV and goose astrovirus genotype 2 (GoAstV-2) isolated in China, we found that both viruses have high conservation, showing 96.5 to 99.5% identities within different strains of DTMUV and GoAstV, respectively. Subsequently, PCR primers and TaqMan probes were designed to identify DTMUV and GoAstV-2, and different fluorescent reporters were given to two probes for differential diagnosis. Through the optimization and verification, this study finally developed a duplex TaqMan qPCR method that can simultaneously detect the above two viruses. The lower limits of detection were 100 copies/µL and 10 copies/µL for DTMUV and GoAstV-2 under optimal condition. The assay was also highly specific in detecting one or two viruses in various combinations in specimens, and provide tool for clinical diagnosis of mixed infections of viruses in goose. In order to improve the quality and popularity of environmental education in China, the State Education Commission (now Ministry of Education), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and British Petroleum (BP) (China) have reached an agreement on the launch of the project named the Primary and Secondary School Environmental Education Campaign. This project was officially initiated in July 1997. In September 2000, the first phase of the project came to completion. The project aims to: (1) promote the transformation of teacher and school performance; and (2) promote the transformation of students, family, and community. In this article, the authors discuss some preliminary achievements the project has made.

Cross-border E-commerce is booming now. Although the damage of COVID-19 pandemic, the love for dressing well still resides within peoples' mind. Hanfu industry arose in recent ten years, and created an astonishing selling result in China. There exist great market potentials overseas across the global. Taking the Amazon web platform as an example, we extracted buyer comments to find out the requirement and preference of Hanfu followers. We tried to extract useful information from the comments and implemented those comments using J48 decision tree in Weka tool. We found meaningful keywords in user comments which are either positive or negative. Hanfu sellers could modify the key service points such as quality of goods, more precise product information and more efficient product service, which can be used as a reference for promotion Hanfu overseas via cross-border e-commerce. This paper reports on an empirical study that examined changes in L2 writers’ perceived use of metacognitive strategies after receiving a processgenre writing instruction. Following a mixed-methods approach, this study was conducted in two intact College English classes at a university in China. Participants were 72 first-year undergraduates, with an experimental group (n = 40) taught by the process-genre writing approach and a comparison group (n = 32) receiving conventional writing instruction. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used to examine students’ changes in their conceptualized metacognitive strategies. Think-aloud protocols were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ application of metacognitive strategies and genre knowledge in performing writing tasks. Findings revealed that the processgenre instruction had a significantly positive impact on the “considering the audience” factor, and students’ conception of the audience was clearer and more diversified. An in-depth analysis of the think-aloud protocols showed that the participants incorporated the acquired metacognitive strategies and genre knowledge in completing writing tasks, with more pre-task planning time focused on both global and local aspects. Object: This study attempted to explore the effects of vaccination on disease severity and the factors for viral clearance and hospitalization in omicroninfected patients. Methods: The clinical manifestations of 3,265 Omicron-infected patients (BA.2 lineage variant; the Omicron group) were compared with those of 226 Deltainfected patients (the Delta group). A Multi-class logistic regression model was employed to analyze the impacts of vaccination doses and intervals on disease severity; a logistic regression model to evaluate the risk factors for hospitalization; R 4.1.2 data analysis to investigate the factors for time for nucleic acid negativization (NAN). Results: Compared with the Delta group, the Omicron group reported a fast transmission, mild symptoms, and lower severity incidence, and a significant inverse correlation of vaccination dose with clinical severity (OR: 0.803, 95%CI: 0.742-0.868, p<0.001). Of the 7 or 5 categories of vaccination status, the risk of severity significantly decreased only at ≥21 days after three doses (OR: 0.618, 95% CI: 0.475-0.803, p<0.001; OR: 0.627, 95% CI: 0.482-0.815, p<0.001, respectively). The Omicron group also reported underlying illness as an independent factor for hospitalization, sore throat as a protective factor, and much shorter time for NAN [15 (12,19) vs. 16 (12,22), p<0.05]. NAN was associated positively with age, female gender, fever, cough, and disease severity, but negatively with vaccination doses. Conclusion: Booster vaccination should be advocated for COVID-19 pandemic-related control and prevention policies and adequate precautions should be taken for patients with underlying conditions. Expressway toll station is listed by lightning protection experts as one of the five difficult problems in the field of international lightning protection. So far, the direct lightning protection of the expressway toll station is mainly based on the electrical geometry model-rolling ball method. Lightning rod or lightning belt is installed on the high pole lamp of the toll square and the ceiling of the toll island as a flash catching device to intercept lightning. The lightning rod is a section of metal conductor with the tip. From the process of the connection between up leader generated by the lightning rod and down leader of lightning, the lightning rod has the ability to attract the lightning rod, and can prevent lightning strike of the protected objects within a certain range. From the perspective of lightning protection methods and means, lightning protection plays an interception role against lightning discharge, also called interceptor. A large number of practice has proved that the lightning rod plays an important role in protecting the building structure from lightning damage. With the development of electronic information society, the limitations of lightning rod are more and more prominent, resulting in more and more lightning strike accidents. In 2019, China invented a new flash connection device-lightning interceptor that can overcome the limitations of lightning rod and has applied it on expressways, which has achieved remarkable results. In this paper, the physical parameters of lightning receiving process by the lightning interceptor and the lightning rod are compared, and the solution to prevent direct lightning strike at expressway toll station is proposed. Primula denticulata subsp. sinodenticulata is an endemic medicinal plant from China; however, its resources are extremely scarce due to a lot of obstacles such as scattered distribution, long natural renewal cycle, and overexploitation for medicinal value. In this study, a rapid propagation protocol in vitro of P. denticulata subsp. sinodenticulata was established, hoping to provide a possible way for resource protection. The leaves and petioles of different ages of the plant were selected as explants, and Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium were used as the basic medium. The appropriate types and concentrations of hormones for growth were selected via a single factor, and then the effects of types and concentrations of different hormones on callus induction and cluster bud occurrence were investigated by a complete combination experiment. The study showed that the callus with a strong redifferentiation capacity was obtained from 8-to 10-day old leaves and 10- to 20-day old petioles in MS medium with 0.5 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and 1.0 mg/l α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) after 30 to 40 days of culture. Subsequently, green cluster bud started to appear with 100% occurrence rate. The obtained cluster bud was subcultured in the aforementioned medium with 12.67 proliferation coefficient. The optimal rooting medium was the hormone-free 1/2MS medium; the rooting rate was 100%, and the survival rate was over 95%. Background: Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome is a rare disorder of the immune regulatory system caused by forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) mutations. Abnormal numbers or functions of regulatory T (Treg) cells account for the various autoimmune symptoms. We aimed to explore the molecular genetics and phenotypic spectra of patients with atypical IPEX syndrome in China. Methods: We analyzed the molecular, clinical and immune phenotype characteristics of five Chinese patients with FOXP3 mutations. Results: We summarized the molecular and phenotypic features of five patients with FOXP3 mutations, including two novel mutations. Four of the five patients displayed atypical phenotypes, and one developed immune-related peripheral neuropathy. Three of the five patients showed normal frequencies of Treg cells, but the proportions of subsets of Treg cells, CD4+ T cells and B cells were out of balance. Conclusions: Our report broadens the understanding of the clinical features of atypical IPEX syndrome. Our detailed analyses of the immunological characteristics of these patients enhance the understanding of the possible mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the differences in credit card behaviors between rural and urban households in China. Using data from a national survey of Chinese households, results show distinct differences between rural and urban respondents in credit card adoption and usage even after controlling for relevant demographic, financial, attitude, and expectation variables. Rural households are less likely to possess a credit card, possibly due to supply side limitations such as lack of financial institutions and low rate of credit card acceptance in rural areas. No urban–rural difference is found in credit card payment behavior. Implications for policymakers and credit card issuers are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is commonly stated that the press in China can be divided into two main categories, the party-oriented official press and the market-oriented commercial press. This article examines an official paper, China Youth Daily, which is a central organ of the Communist Youth League of China. The findings of a content analysis demonstrate that this title differs significantly from other central official titles, like People’s Daily, but also from commercial papers, like Southern Metropolis Daily. While China Youth Daily’s journalism is close to the official pole in the amount of propaganda-related material it covers, it also has a greater emphasis on watchdog journalism than does People’s Daily. It places a much greater emphasis on infotainment than do either of the official and commercial poles. It is more likely to use journalistic techniques like sensationalism and the revelation of personal details than are the other titles analysed. These findings lead to the conclusion that the bi-polar characterization of the Chinese press requires modification. At least one prominent national title is best described as ‘popular official’ media. One of the main features of this kind of journalism is that it presents the party and business elite in a human light and thus constitutes a renewal of the repertoire of hegemonic devices at the party’s disposal. What is certainly the case is that the frequent claim that there is a contradiction between popular journalism responding to audience tastes and official journalism constrained by the propaganda needs of the party is mistaken. Field monitoring is critical in the examination of indoor air quality (IAQ) which offers an integrated assessment of human exposure. A good measurement protocol includes appropriate methodologies and compliance of quality control and quality assurance procedures. In China, there has been a huge economic growth in the past 20 years and living standard for Chinese citizens has been improving with a rapid development in urban cities and infrastructures. With these developments, there have been a growth of increasing pollution sources, and IAQ has been a major concern to the government and many Chinese citizens with widespread reports of the coherent health impacts. However, the indoor monitoring in China is full of technical challenges. In this paper, we review the difficulties in conducting IAQ assessment in China. Since late 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping has introduced far-ranging measures to "build China into a maritime power (建设海洋强国)." One notable campaign was the creation of a centralized China Coast Guard (CCG) force and the National Oceanic Commission (NOC), as the previous lack of a functional mechanism to coordinate China's maritime policies and five maritime law enforcement agencies, the "five dragons," has been a longstanding problem hindering the country from effectively administering its maritime territories. This paper argues that the operational functions of the CCG have been developed, although not fully, and CCG vessels are now undertaking patrol missions in an orderly pattern. Nevertheless, at the policymaking level, the progress of the reform is rather limited. Particularly, the development of the NOC, an organ responsible for the "top-level design" of China's grand maritime strategy, as well as the legal foundations for the CCG's operations are still incomplete. Moreover, Beijing's decision not to incorporate the Maritime Safety Administration into the CCG suggests that the country is adopting an old logic of "crossing the river by feeling the stones (摸着石头过河)" while still pledging to reach its maritime power goal, part of the Chinese dream for national rejuvenation. A High Resolution Atmospheric Model (HiRAM) at 20-km resolution is adopted to simulate tropical storm (TS) activity over the western North Pacific (WNP) and Taiwan/East Coast of China (TWCN) at the present time (1979 - 2003) and future climate (2075 - 2099) under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) fifth assessment report (AR5) representative concentration pathway (RCP) 8.5 scenarios. The results show that in contrast to TS simulation activities in most of the low-resolution climate models, TS activities except intensity over the WNP and TWCN region are well simulated by HiRAM at 20-km resolution. The linkage between large-scale environments and TS genesis simulated by HiRAM are dramatically superior to those in low-resolution fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) models. During 2075 - 2099, both TS genesis numbers and TS frequency over the WNP and TWCN are projected to decrease consistent with the IPCC AR5 report. However, the rate of decrease (49%) is much greater than that projected in IPCC AR5. The decrease in TC genesis numbers under global warming is primarily attributed to the reduction in mid-level relative humidity and large-scale ascending motion, despite the warmer sea surface temperature (SST) providing more favorable conditions for TS formation. TS intensity and the maximum precipitation rate are projected to increase under global warming. At the end of the 21st century, the mean precipitation rate within 200 km of TS storm center over the TWCN region is projected to increase by 54%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aimed to establish an effective prognostic nomogram with or without plasma Epstein-Barr virus DNA (EBV DNA) for nondisseminated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).Methods: The nomogram was based on a retrospective study of 4630 patients who underwent radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from 2007 to 2009. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the nomogram were determined by a concordance index (C-index) and calibration curve and were compared with EBV DNA and the current staging system. The results were validated using bootstrap resampling and a prospective cohort study on 1819 patients consecutively enrolled from 2011 to 2012 at the same institution. All statistical tests were two-sided.Results: Independent factors derived from multivariable analysis of the primary cohort to predict recurrence were age, sex, body mass index (BMI), T stage, N stage, plasma EBV DNA, pretreatment high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and hemoglobin level (HGB), which were all assembled into the nomogram with (nomogram B) or without EBV DNA (nomogram A). The calibration curve for the probability of recurrence showed that the nomogram-based predictions were in good agreement with actual observations. The C-index of nomogram B for predicting recurrence was 0.728 (P < .001), which was statistically higher than the C-index values for nomogram A (0.690), EBV DNA (0.680), and the current staging system (0.609). The C-index of nomogram B (0.730) and nomogram A (0.681) remained higher for predicting recurrence among patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (P < .001). The results were confirmed in the validation cohort.Conclusions: The proposed nomogram with or without plasma EBV DNA resulted in more accurate prognostic prediction for NPC patients. Background: Gentiana rigescens, an important medicinal plant in China, has been widely cultivated in Yunnan province, China. Previous studies were focused on analysis and determination of the metabolites isolated from this species, the accumulation of these metabolites during growth period are not yet clear. In this study, samples for the experiments were obtained by tissue culture. FT-IR and LC-MS/MS method were performed to distinguish the variation on the major metabolites in G. rigescens during growing stage when combined with chemometrics. Results: Methodology validations were all within the required limits. The metabolites were visually different in tissue culture samples and mature plants. The diversity of metabolites increased proportionally with plant growth. The quantitative analysis showed the content of gentiopicroside was significantly vary during different growing stage. The highest content of gentiopicroside (122.93 ± 7.01 mg/g) was detected in leaf of regenerated plantlet, whereas its content in root significantly increased along with underground parts growth. Moreover, flavonoids mainly distributed in aerial parts showed potential competitive relationship during plant growth. Conclusion: The distribution and accumulation of metabolites are associated with different parts and plant growth, which provide potential evidences for the rational application and exploitation of G. rigescens. Background and Objectives. Oxidative stress can initiate endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. This study evaluated whether tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the predominant active ingredient in Rhizoma LigusticiWallichii (chuanxiong), prevents endothelial dysfunction in a rat model of oxidative stress. Methods. Isolated rat aortic rings were pretreated with various drugs before the induction of endothelial dysfunction by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Changes in isometric tension were then measured in acetylcholine- (ACh-) relaxed rings. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression was evaluated in the rings by Western blotting, and superoxide anion (O2 •-) content was assessed in primary rat aortic endothelial cells by dihydroethidium- (DHE-) mediated fluorescence microscopy. Results. ACh-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) was disrupted by H2O2 in endothelium-intact aortic rings. H2O2-impaired relaxationwas ameliorated by acute pretreatment with lowconcentrations of TMP, as well as by pretreatment with catalase and the NADPH oxidase inhibitors, apocynin and diphenyleneiodonium (DPI). TMP, apocynin, and DPI also reduced O2 •- accumulation in endothelial cells,but TMP failed to alter eNOS expression in aortic rings incubated with H2O2. Conclusions. TMP safeguards against oxidative stress-induced endothelial dysfunction, suggesting that the agent might find therapeutic utility in the management of vascular diseases. China's maritime power has been rapidly ascending in the past three decades alongside its exceptional economic development. Nevertheless, regional countries are suspicious of China's rapid rise because although Beijing pledges to pursue a "peaceful development" its assertiveness in South China Sea has been increasing in recent years. What causes the contrast between China's assertiveness and its reassuring rhetoric? This article argues that due to the fragmented decision-making process, China lacks clear and well-coordinated policies on the South China Sea disputes. In particular, inter-agency competition encourages government agencies to undertake more aggressive actions given the attempt to bargain for more budget funds and bureaucratic power. This phenomenon has mixed implications for regional stability in Asia. The assertiveness of China is not the product of a wellthought out plan, and Beijing's attempt to break the maritime balance of power may not as imminent as the realists warn. With increasing commercial demand for its delicacy, Procambarus clarkii has become an important fishery resource of Poyang Lake in recent years. However, habitat loss, overfishing, and the crayfish plague have diminished P. clarkii populations throughout their area of distribution. In consequence, this study systemically analyses the population structure and dynamics of P. clarkii in the wetland of Poyang Lake using the analytical methods of Bhattacharya and Von Bertalanffy. The main purpose was to collect biological data necessary for the management of this species. The present study showed that the population structure consisted of a maximum of 5.58 age classes for females and 3.25 for males, which indicated that P. clarkii is a relatively short-lived species. The Y'/R analysis showed that Epresent > E0.5, which exceeded the optimization (Eopt) criterion of 0.5 for sustainable exploitation of fisheries, so this species was overexploited in Poyang Lake. The Lc (mean length at first capture) equals 67.5 mm. The estimated mesh size for catching the red swamp crayfish is 13.5 cm. The virtual population analysis model (VPA) showed that the largest annual catch of P. clarkii is 3.43 × 104 t. The Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) is 1.18 × 104 t. The low natural mortality rate range of 0.68-1.11 year-1 suggested that it is ecologically worthwhile to allow the individuals of P. clarkii to grow to larger sizes in order to contribute to the biomass for biologically optimal exploitation. Karst rocky desertification is a process of land degradation involving serious soil erosion, extensive exposure of basement rocks. It leads to drastic decrease in soil productivity and formation of a desert-like landscape. In this regard, changes in climatic conditions are the main origin of the soils degradation. Indeed, soils subjected to successive dry/wet cycling processes caused by climate change develop swelling and shrinkage deformations which can modify their water retention properties, thus inducing the degradation of soil-water capacity. The ecological characteristics of cultivation soils in karst areas, Southwest of China, are extremely easy to be affected by external environmental factors due to its shallow bedding and low vegetation coverage. Based on the analysis of the climate (precipitation) of this region during the past decades, an experimental study has been conducted on a cultivated soil obtained from the typical karst area in southwestern China. Firstly, the soil-water properties have been investigated. The measured soil-water retention curve shows that the air-entry value of the soil is between 50 and 60 kPa, while the residual saturation is about 12%. Based on the experimental results, three identifiable stages of de-saturation have been defined. Secondly, a special apparatus was developed to investigate the volume change behavior of the soil with controlled suction cycles. The vapor equilibrium technique was used for the suction control. The obtained results show that under the effect of dry/wet cycles, (1) the void ratio of the cultivated soil is continuously decreasing, leading to a gradual soil compaction. (2) The permeability decreases, giving rise to a deterioration of water transfer ability as well as a deterioration of soil-water retention capacity. It is then obvious that the long-term dry/wet cycling process caused by the climate change induce a continuously compaction and degradation of the cultivated soil in karst rocky desertification areas. In the recent years, there has been a dramatic growth in the development of hotels in Southern China to meet the rapid demand of business and tourism industry. The indoor air quality of the hotels has become an important consideration due to a large workforce that is engaged in this industry. The objective of this study was to characterise the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in the indoor air in 13 new hotels in Southern China and assess their possible health impact. A 2-day non-simultaneous sampling was carried out in each of the hotels. Decorating materials, cleansing agents and even local regional pollutants outside the hotels could have a contribution and worsen indoor air quality. Toluene level was as high as 498 μg m—3 in a hotel fitted with lots of plywood products. The highest concentrations of methylene chloride (34 μg m—3) and total carbonyls (517 μg m—3) were detected in a hotel where high VOCs cleansing agents were used in guest rooms. In a hotel located in an industrial centre, acetone concentration of 102 μg m —3 was found. The second highest total VOCs concentration (445 μg m—3) was observed in a newly renovated hotel. Outbreaks of the Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), have occurred frequently in China during the past few years, resulting in a broad and significant reduction in rice yield. N. lugens immigrate into China each spring from Southeast Asia, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is the first area affected. Light trap catches for the early season period (March-June) in Guangxi for the past 30 yr have been analyzed, and the catch sequences for five observation stations (Longzhou, Hepu, Yongning Yongfu, and Quanzhou) were studied in detail. It was found that during the past 10 yr the first appearance of N. lugens at light traps occurs earlier, there is a higher frequency of days with large light-trap catches, and catches in southern Guangxi are larger. Recently light-trap catches have also increased in northern Guangxi. It is concluded that the increasing number of immigrants from overseas is one of the primary reasons for the increase in N. lugens outbreaks in the past 10 yr. Global warming, and specifically winter temperature increases, appears to be for a factor accelerating outbreaks of N. lugens in Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and tolerability of nevirapine (NVP)-based regimens in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected Chinese patients in routine clinical practice. Methods: From October 2002 to May 2004, 57 HIV-1-infected patients commenced antiretroviral therapy (ART), and were followed up to December 2008. These antiretroviral-naïve patients, who originally received two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and NVP, had HIV RNA levels, T lymphocyte subsets and safety parameters assessed over 6 years. Results: Of the 57 patients, 34 patients participated in the long-term follow-up. After 5–6 years, >60% of the patients had HIV RNA levels <50 copies/μl, and the median increase in CD4 cell counts from baseline was 329 cells/μl. γ-Glutamyl transferase increased in 17 patients (29.8%); serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were elevated in 15 patients (26.3%), and 25.0% (6/24) of the patients developed lipodystrophy (mainly females). Grade 3/4 adverse events occurred in 3 cases. Conclusion: ART with NVP-based regimens suppressed HIV viremia and produced continued CD4 cell increases in a majority of subjects for 6 years. Vehicle-based sensors can be used for traffic monitoring. These sensors are usually set with long sampling intervals to save communication costs and to avoid network congestion. In this paper, we are interested in understanding the traffic-monitoring performance that we can expect from such vehicle-based mobile sensor networks, despite the incomplete information provided. This is a fundamental problem to be addressed. A performance evaluation has been carried out in Shanghai, China, by utilizing the vehicle-based sensors installed in about 4000 taxies. Two types of traffic status-estimation algorithms, i.e., the link-based and the vehicle-based, are introduced and analyzed. The results show that estimations of the traffic status based on these imperfect data are reasonably accurate. Therefore, the feasibility of such an application is demonstrated. A novel Gram-negative, slightly halophilic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, obligately aerobic bacterium, strain YIM-C248T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from a salt-lake in the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai, north-west China. Cells were non-sporulating short rods, occurring singly or as doublets, motile with peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred with 1–15% (w/v) NaCl [optimum 2–4% (w/v) NaCl], at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and at 4–35°C (optimum 25–30°C). The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1 ω7 c, C12:0 3-OH, cyclo C19:0 ω8 c, C16:0 and C16:1. The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-9 and the genomic DNA G + C content was 58.6 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YIM-C248T should be assigned to the genus Halomonas. The sequence similarities between the isolate and the type strains of members of the genus Halomonas were in the range of 92.5–97.5%. The combination of phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization data, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic differences supported the view that strain YIM-C248T represents a new species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas sediminis sp. nov. is proposed, with YIM-C248T (=CCTCC AA 207031 = KCTC 22167) as the type strain. Although many scholars have agreed that a ch'ing-valuing trend existed in mid-late Ming culture, one should first ask how ch'ing attracted the attention of the mid-late Ming academic world. The reason that ch'ing became a cultural focus in the mid-late Ming was not only because of the prevailing culture, but also because of Ming academic fashion. Capitalist discourse caused ch'ing to become popular in the mid-late Ming. However, it was often invoked out of context to exaggerate intertextuality. While many operas and novels of this period were about love and desire, were they a part of the thought trends of that time? Although recent researchers have generally surpassed the limitations of economic determinism, they are often still influenced by "enlightenment" or "anti-tradition," both of which are contested concepts. In this paper, we present the characteristics of a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), which is the Shanghai urban vehicular network (SUVnet). We construct a mobility model using the GPS data collected from more than 4000 taxis in Shanghai. The model is both realistic and large scale. Based on this model, network topology and connectivity of SUVnet are studied. Because of the sparse distribution and dynamic topology of SUVnet, simply utilizing the conventional mobile ad hoc network routing protocols in SUVnet may not achieve a satisfactory performance. Therefore, we apply the delay-tolerant network model to SUVnet and evaluate the epidemic routing protocols. We propose a new protocol, which is the distance aware epidemic routing (DAER), to improve the bundle delivery ratio. Results show that DAER performs well for a VANET. In seeking to explain why Shanghai, China's economic capital, has a more timid media system than its sibling cities, we examine the political economy of the Shanghai media from the perspective of clientelism in the post-Communist and cultural milieus of what we call "party-market corporatism." Through field work we analyze four aspects of clientelism, including media conglomeration, elite circulation, resource allocation, and (lack of) media professionalism. We conclude that Shanghai is at once a "big city" and yet a "small place:" a resource-rich city governed by one layer of power authority, hence the distance from the epicenter of power to various media organizations is so short and direct as to make media control through clientelism very effective and powerful. The Chinese press, instead of acting purely as a state propaganda instrument, now functions as ‘Party Publicity Inc.’ — that is, a quasi-business that seeks to make huge profits on the one hand and to legitimate the Party mandate by promoting its image on the other. The accelerated pace of media conglomeration following China's accession to the World Trade Organization has sharpened this trend. This study examines the impact of press ecology in Shenzhen, a national trend-setter for ‘Party Publicity Inc.’, before and after conglomeration. We observe that press conglomeration has (a) engendered a more centralized management structure and operation; (b) replaced duopolistic competition with market monopoly and greater price-fixing abilities; (c) continued to rely on state office subscription; (d) dampened journalists' enthusiasm for political reform in favor of economic interest; (e) developed a two-tier Publicity Inc. to serve both the Party and the market; and (f) provided an opportunity for overseas expansion. Marketization does not trigger political reform, but pre-empts pressure for political change. The Party Publicity Inc. in its conglomerate form represents a complicitous accommodation between power and money engineered by a post-Communist bureaucratic-authoritarian regime. Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is a rare autosomal dominant cutaneous disorder characterized by a mixture of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules of various sizes on the extremities. Pathogenic mutations in the DSRAD gene have been identified. In this report, we identified a Chinese family with a three-generation pedigree of DSH, in which a novel heterozygous nucleotide G→A transition was found. It is at position 3,125 in exon 12 of the DSRAD gene which induces a R1042H change in the putative deaminase domain of DSRAD. Our study expands the database on the DSRAD gene mutations in DSH. The Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S) is the China's first comprehensive solar dedicated satellite, scheduled to be launched around 2022. The Lyman-alpha (Ly α) Solar Telescope (LST) is one of the payloads of the ASO-S, consisting of three scientific instruments and two Guide Telescopes (GTs). The scientific instruments include a Solar Disk Imager (SDI), a White-light Solar Telescope (WST), and a Solar Corona Imager (SCI), which are aimed to observe the whole evolving process of two types of violent eruptions on the Sun, i.e., solar flares and coronal mass ejections, in multiwavelengths with high temporal and spatial resolutions. To achieve this goal, all LST instruments have included an observation mode (event mode) dedicated to event observations. In this mode, all instruments take images at a higher cadence (the SCI takes full-frame coronal images while SDI and WST take only partial frame images around the eruption region). The time and location information of the eruption events can be effectively obtained by monitoring the local brightness enhancement of the onboard images processed with median filtering and pixel rebinning.
