Background: Postoperative pain is common in pediatric urological surgery. The study assess the impact of perioperative intravenous infusion of low-dose esketamine on postoperative pain in pediatric urological surgery. Methods: Pediatric patients (n = 80) undergoing urological surgery were randomized into four groups. Patients in the control group were administered an analgesic pump containing only hydromorphone at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg (Hydromorphone Group 1, H1) or 0.15 mg/kg (Hydromorphone Group 2, H2). Patients in the experimental group were injected intravenously with 0.3 mg/kg of esketamine (Esketamine group 1, ES1) or equal volume of saline (Esketamine Group 2, ES2) during anesthesia induction. Esketamine 1.0 mg/kg and hydromorphone 0.1 mg/kg were added to the analgesic pump. Face, Leg, Activity, Crying, and Comfort (FLACC) scale or the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and adverse effects were recorded at 2, 6, 24, and 48 h postoperatively. Additionally, total and effective PCA button presses were recorded. Results: In comparison to the H1 group, the pain scores were notably reduced at all postoperative time points in both the ES1 and H2 groups. The ES2 group exhibited lower pain scores only at 24 and 48 h postoperatively. When compared to the H2 group, there were no significant differences in pain scores at various postoperative time points in the ES2 group. However, the ES1 group demonstrated significantly lower pain scores at 6, 24 and 48 h postoperatively, and these scores were also significantly lower than those observed in the ES2 group. The total and effective number of PCA button presses in the ES1, ES2 and H2 group were lower than that in the H1 group (P < 0.001). The incidence of adverse effects within 48 h after surgery was 15% in ES1, 22% in ES2, 58% in H1, and 42% in H2, respectively (P = 0.021). Conclusions: The use of low-dose esketamine infusion in analgesia pump can effectively alleviates postoperative pain in pediatric urological patients, leading to a significant reduction in the number of analgesic pump button press. The combined approach of perioperative anesthesia induction and analgesia pump administration is recommended for optimal pain management in these patients. At 10:05 a.m. on 4 February 2022, the perilous rock mass Yizhuxiang in Leizu Town, Yuan'an County, Hubei Province, China collapsed on a large scale. The Yizhuxiang collapse was about 35 m in length, 52 m in height, and 29 m in maximum thickness. The volume of the collapse was 5.32 × 104 m3. It threatened the transport of the national trunk road, destroyed the branch road and some cement mixing station workshops, and caused serious economic losses. The rock mass exposed in the collapse was dolomite with developed joint fractures. Under the effects of mining and unloading, fractures occurred in the rock mass; the top of the rock mass was bent and deformed towards the free face; and tension cracks were formed on the rear edge. The safety ore pillar directly below the collapsed body was compressed and deformed under the action of gravity, thus accelerating the internal deformation of the rock mass and leading to the formation of multiple dominant joints inside the rock mass. In the winter of 2021, the weather was extreme, with heavy snowfall and low temperatures. Under the effects of freeze–thaw, the strength of the rock mass declined and the tension cracks further expanded so that the rock mass experienced an accelerated deformation and finally collapsed. Causes of the collapse include mining activity beneath the collapsed mass and heightened extreme weather. The interest in reusing wastewater for irrigation is being popularized in most countries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different wastewater and nitrogen fertilizer on soil fertility and plant quality, as well as to identify the optimal irrigation mode in the North China Plain. A total of nine treatments, including control (groundwater, no fertilizer), piggery wastewater, reclaimed water, and saline water, combined with nitrogen fertilizer (300 kg/ha and 200 kg/ha), were conducted in a greenhouse in 2019 (Xinxiang, Henan Province). Soil pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, heavy metals contents, and cucumber yield and quality were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) compared with the underground water (control), soil pH value with a decrement of 0.21 units in piggery wastewater (PW), and 0.24 units in saline water treatments (SW). Soil electrical conductivity (EC) value significantly increased by 5.8~20.9% in PW and SW treatments, while there was no significant difference in EC in reclaimed water. The highest EC (770 µS/cm) was recorded in SW treatment. (2) No dramatic difference on the concentrations of soil lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the PW, RW, and SW treatments, compared with the control, but soil organic matter, copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) concentrations in wastewater treatments were increased by 2.1~43.4%, 24.4~27.0%, and 14.9~21.9%, respectively. (3) There were no significant differences in cucumber yield and quality in RW treatment, while there was a slight decrease by 1.4% in yield in the SW treatment. The highest cucumber yield was observed in PWH treatment, with an increment of 17.5%. In addition, the contents of Vitamin C, soluble sugar, and protein were also improved by PW treatment. In this study, PW treatment showed the strongest ability to promote cucumber yield and quality, thus indicating that piggery wastewater irrigation with 300 kg/ha nitrogen would be the optimal practice in this region. Industrial development has brought China both opportunities and challenges since the reform and opening up in 1978. Spatial and temporal analysis showed that rapid industrialization has made eastern China under a more serious pollution stress. The most serious effects of industrial pollution were reflected in aquatic and soil ecosystem degradation, and damage can be observed from species, population, and community to ecosystem level. Public consciousness about contaminated sites rose from 2004 leading to greater efforts in ecological remediation, monitoring, and risk governance. Considerable efforts are still needed in expanding the extent and breadth of monitoring to explore where the greatest ecological risks lie and how to control them. Ecology of industrial pollution has become a popular discipline in China and will be further developed to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Future research for a better ecological risk management should be focused on multi-media transfer and effects of mixed pollutants, mechanisms for clean energy and material flow, and integration of ecological risk with human health risk. Epidemiological investigation suggested that the current outbreak of COVID-19 virus was associated with a seafood market, and COVID-19 has been identified a probable bat origin. Similar to SARS event in 2003, such a zoonotic disease showed an animal-to-person and even more serious person-to-person spread, and posed a significant threat to the global health and socio-economic development. We analyzed the association of both outbreaks with wildlife diet in China and proposed suggestions for regulating wildlife conservation and food safety to prevent human exposure to the novel virus, including increasing social awareness of hazards in eating wild animals, strengthening legislation on eating and trading of wild animals, improving the standards for food safety, and establishing market supervision mechanism. Holotrichia parallela (Motschulsky, 1854) is an important pest for peanut, potato, and soybean in China, and it causes great economic losses. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of H. parallela. This mitogenome was 16,975 bp long and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). Gene order was conserved and identical to most other previously sequenced Scarabaeidae. Most PCGs of H. parallela have the conventional start codons ATN, with the exception of cox1 (AAC). Except for three genes (cox1, cox2, and cox3) end with the incomplete stop codon T−, all other PCGs terminated with the stop codon TAA or TAG. Phylogenetic analysis positioned H. parallela in a well-supported clade with Rhopaea magnicornis, Polyphylla gracilicornis, and Melolontha hippocastani. The relationships (Dynastinae+(Cetoniinae+(Melolonthinae+(Rutelinae + Scarabaeinae)))) were supported in Scarabaeidae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Three types of main grain production systems in china are examined. • Agricultural production impacts on the atmospheric environment requires further attention. • Rice production had the highest potential damage to ecosystem health compared with maize and wheat. • Air pollutants pose more severe potential damage to ecosystem health. Globally, ecosystems are becoming damaged or degraded due to stresses associated with anthropogenic activities. To identify the quantitative connection between nitrogen fertilizer-related agricultural production processes and ecosystem health, a dose-response approach based on the ReCiPe 2016 method is developed. Rice production had the highest potential ecosystem health risk (EHR) (560 species.yr) in China, while maize and wheat had EHR values of 413 and 252 species.yr, respectively. Both crop type and planting area have great impacts on EHR. Pollutants posing the highest potential harm to ecosystem health were NH 3 , N 2 O, and NO 3 −. Air pollutants, including NH 3 and N 2 O, did more severe damage to ecosystem health than soil or water pollutants. Scenario analysis suggests that if improved efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer use is employed to replace current practices, total EHR would decline by about 28.7- 41.1%. Improved farming practices could change the relationship between grain productivity and agroecosystem health from trade-offs to co-benefits. Results demonstrated that optimizing chemical fertilizer application in agricultural production processes could significantly contribute to the delivery of some Sustainable Development Goals. This study investigated the occurrence and profile of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface water and sediment of the whole Bohai Sea. A total of 53 pairs of surface water and sediment samples were collected and the contained OPEs were quantified using a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The average concentrations of OPEs in surface water and sediment were in the range of 0–92.9 ng/L and 0.001–8.58 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, with tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) as the predominant congener in both compartments. The total concentrations of 14 OPEs (∑ 14 OPEs) in surface water and sediment were in the range of 10.9–516.4 ng/L and 1.42–52.9 ng/g dw, respectively. The inventories of ∑ 14 OPEs were calculated to be 179.3 tons in the water and 101.5 tons in the sediment. Based on the risk quotients (RQs), the ecological risks of OPEs to the aquatic organisms in the Bohai Sea were considered to be negligible. • TCEP was the dominant OPE in both surface water and sediment of the Bohai Sea. • Higher levels of OPEs were detected in Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay. • The estimated loads of OPEs in water and sediment were 179 and 102 tons, respectively. • OPE contamination posed negligible risks to the aquatic organisms. The installation rate of denitrification devices is accelerating in Chinese urban boilers. Previous studies on pulverized coal-fired boilers without denitrification devices showed that combustion products containing mainly oxidized mercury (Hg) preferably enriched lighter Hg isotopes than feed coals. However, the magnitude of this enrichment becomes less pronounced if denitrification devices are installed. The underlying Hg isotope fractionation mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, three types of urban boilers (two pulverized coal-fired boilers, one circulating fluidized bed boiler and one municipal waste incinerator boiler) all installed with denitrification devices were measured for Hg isotope compositions of their feed fuels and corresponding combustion products. We observed little mass independent fractionation but very significant mass dependent fractionation (MDF) between feed fuels and combustion products. The fly ash and desulfurization products both enriched heavier Hg isotopes than feed coals in three coal-fired boilers, and the enrichment of heavy Hg isotopes increased with sequential removal of combustion products in all boilers. Different from previously suggested kinetic MDF for gaseous Hg0(g)→HgII(g) and gaseous HgII(g)→particulate HgII(p) in coal combustion flue gases, we propose an equilibrium MDF for Hg0(g)↔HgII(g) followed by a kinetic MDF for HgII(g)→HgII(p). This equilibrium MDF most likely occurs during Hg0(g) oxidation in denitrification devices, which enriches heavy Hg isotopes in oxidized products (HgII(g) and HgII(p)) that are then sequestrated in fly ash and desulfurization products. The paradigm shift of MDF in boilers with denitrification devices was further verified by parallel Hg isotope measurement in urban atmosphere particulates. Our study clearly demonstrates that modern coal-fired boilers with denitrification devices have a quite different MDF compared to traditional boilers without denitrification devices. This has important implications for estimating isotope signatures of urban boiler Hg emissions, and for isotope tracing of anthropogenic Hg emissions. The water quality in drinking water source area is essential for human health. Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, the pollutants, especially trace elements, are continuously discharged into aquatic environment and pose a risk to human health. An extensive investigation was carried out in drinking water source area in highly urbanized Tianjin of China. Long-term monitoring data of the water body was collected on conventional physical and chemical parameters (pH, ions, TOC etc.) and metallic elements (Hg, As Cd, Pb, Co, U etc.) from 2005 to 2017. Our results showed that CaMg–Cl–SO 4 and CaMg–HCO 3 were the two prominent hydrochemical materials, implying that the pollution of aquatic system was mainly caused by anthropogenic activities and mineral dissolution within terms of drinking water guidelines (national and international standards), the concentrations of arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) were beyond the quality standards. Multivariate statistical approaches were applied to assess the origins of the elements. The results showed that human activities, as well as endogenous release, contributed significantly to appearance of trace elements. A transformation from low-trophic state to high-trophic state was in progress from 2005 to 2017 in Yuqiao reservoir, and most of the water was not heavily polluted by trace elements. The health risk assessment suggested that As had the potential to cause carcinogenic harm to the local residents, with daily dietary ingestion as the most predominant pathway. The extractive industry consumes vast amounts of energy and is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, its climatic impacts have not yet been fully accounted for. In this study, we estimated the GHG emissions from extractive activities globally with a focus on China, and assessed the main emission drivers. In addition, we predicted the Chinese extractive industry emissions in the context of global mineral demand and cycling. As of 2020, GHG emissions from the global extractive industry had reached 7.7 billion tons of CO 2 equivalents (CO 2 e), accounting for approximately 15.0% of the global anthropogenic GHG emissions (excluding GHG emissions from land use, land-use change, and forestry activities (LULUCF), with China being the largest emitter, accounting for 3.5% of global emissions. Extractive industry GHG emissions are projected to peak by 2030 or even earlier to achieve low-carbon peak targets. The most critical pathway for reducing GHG emissions in the extractive industry is to control emissions from coal mining. Therefore, reducing methane emissions from mining and washing coal (MWC) should be prioritized. Frequent exchange of surface water and groundwater occurs in arid/semi-arid areas due to high evaporation and intensive irrigation activities, affecting the migration and transformation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and threatening drinking water safety. This study analyzed legacy PFASs and potential precursors in surface water, groundwater, soil, and aquifer solid samples collected from a typical arid area, the Hetao Irrigation District of Northern China, to explore PFASs distribution and transformation between surface and ground. Total PFASs (ΣPFASs) in surface water was 29-232 ng/L, higher than 2-77 ng/L in groundwater. ΣPFASs in soil were 0.29-0.59 ng/g, higher than 0.09-0.27 in the aquifer solids. Regarding horizontal distribution, the concentration of PFASs in groundwater increased in downtowns and the areas recharged with lake water. In terms of vertical distribution, ΣPFASs decreased with the increase of depth, and more PFASs adsorbed on clay particles in the aquifer. The total oxidable precursor analysis showed that 8:2 FT and 4:2 FT were the dominant precursors of PFASs, resulting in an increment of 0.1-4 ng/L PFASs. Hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope compositions suggest similar sources between surface water and groundwater in the study area, while principal component analysis and Bayesian inference also indicate that surface water is an important source of groundwater PFASs. The annual infiltration PFASs to groundwater from Ulansuhai was estimated by the water balance approach to be 9.39 kg. Biodiversity is essential for the maintenance of ecosystem health and delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the drivers of biodiversity loss and the spatial variation in their impacts are poorly understood. Here, we explore the spatial-temporal distributions of threatened and declining ("biodiversity-loss") species and find that these species are affected by multiple stressors, with climate and human activities being the fundamental shaping forces. There has been large spatial variation in the distribution of threatened species over China's provinces, with the biodiversity of Gansu, Guangdong, Hainan, and Shaanxi provinces severely reduced. With increasing urbanization and industrialization, the expansion of construction and worsening pollution has led to habitat retreat or degradation, and high proportions of amphibians, mammals, and reptiles are threatened. Foreign bodies impaction in the esophagus is a common clinical emergency. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features of foreign body ingestion, and to analyze the risk factors of complications during the endoscopic procedure.From 18 general hospitals in Zhejiang Province in China, 595 patients who underwent gastroscopic removal of ingested foreign bodies were prospectively recruited. Patient characteristics, clinical features, foreign body features, clinical outcomes, and complications were documented.The most common types of foreign body in the esophagus were sharp objects (75.9%), including fish bones (34.0%), chicken bones (22.1%), and fruit nuclei (17.1%). The remaining types were non-sharp objects (24.1%), including food bolus (14.6%). Most objects were lodged in the proximal esophagus (75.9%). Foreign body-related complications occurred in 63 patients (10.5%), including hemorrhage (5.0%), perforation and infection (5.5%). The complication rate was increased by 4.04- and 8.48- fold when endoscopic retrieval was performed after impacted for over 24 and 48 hours, respectively, after impaction, as compared with within 12 hours. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the patients with sharp objects developed more complications than those with non-sharp ones (odds ratio, 2.85; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-7.50; P = .034). However, complications were unrelated with the location in the esophagus or length of foreign bodies (P > .05).Sharp objects were the most frequently ingested foreign bodies in the esophagus in China. The prevalence of complications was increased in the patients with long foreign body retention time (>24 hours) and sharp objects. Sharp foreign bodies in the esophagus are recommended to be removed within 24 hours.
