Abstract\n摘要\nPLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARYThis study explored the effects of listening-based lexical focus-on-form (lexical FonF) on the acquisition and retention of morphologically complex words. One hundred eighty-two adult English learners with two levels of English proficiency (higher and lower proficiency) from a public university in mainland China were assigned to three different conditions: morphological instruction (MI), an experimental condition in which morphological instruction related to target words was provided in addition to a series of audio passages containing the target items; word meaning explanation (WME), an experimental condition in which explanations of the word meaning of target items were offered in addition to the listening activity; and one control condition (CT) in which learners were exposed only to the listening activity. The results indicated that lexical FonF led to more vocabulary gains than purely incidental FonF and that the MI condition significantly outperformed the WME condition in both the acquisition and retention of morphologically complex words. The results indicated that the combination of a meaning-focused listening activity and explicit vocabulary teaching led to more vocabulary gains than purely incidental vocabulary learning from a meaning-focused listening activity. In addition, the MI condition significantly outperformed the WME condition in both the acquisition and retention of morphologically complex words. Background: The comparison between sedation and general anesthesia (GA) in terms of all-cause mortality remains a subject of ongoing debate. The primary objective of our study was to investigate the impact of GA and sedation on all-cause mortality in order to provide clarity on this controversial topic. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, incorporating cohort studies and RCTs about postoperative all-cause mortality. Comprehensive searches were performed in the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases, with the search period extending until February 28, 2023. Two independent reviewers extracted the relevant information, including the number of deaths, survivals, and risk effect values at various time points following surgery, and these data were subsequently pooled and analyzed using a random effects model. Results: A total of 58 studies were included in the analysis, with a majority focusing on endovascular surgery. The findings of our analysis indicated that, overall, and in most subgroup analyses, sedation exhibited superiority over GA in terms of in-hospital and 30-day mortality. However, no significant difference was observed in subgroup analyses specific to cerebrovascular surgery. About 90-day mortality, the majority of studies centered around cerebrovascular surgery. Although the overall pooled results showed a difference between sedation and GA, no distinction was observed between the pooled ORs and the subgroup analyses based on RCTs and matched cohort studies. For one-year all-cause mortality, all included studies focused on cardiac and macrovascular surgery. No difference was found between the HRs and the results derived from RCTs and matched cohort studies. Conclusions: The results suggested a potential superiority of sedation over GA, particularly in the context of cardiac and macrovascular surgery, mitigating the risk of in-hospital and 30-day death. Atmospheric methane is one of the major greenhouse gases and has a great impact on climate change. To obtain the polluted levels of atmospheric methane in the ground-level range, this study used satellite observations and vertical profile features derived by atmospheric chemistry model to estimate the ground methane concentrations in first. Then, the improved daily ground-level atmospheric methane concentration dataset with full spatial coverage (100%) and 5-km resolution in mainland China from 2019 to 2021 were retrieved by station-based observations and gaussian regression model. The overall estimated deviation between the estimated ground methane concentrations and the WDCGG station-based measurements is less than 10 ppbv. The R by tenfold cross-validation is 0.93, and the R2 is 0.87. The distribution of the ground-level methane concentrations in the Chinese region is characterized by high in the east and south, and low in the west and north. On the time scale, ground-level methane concentration in the Chinese region is higher in winter and lower in summer. Meanwhile, the spatial and temporal distribution and changes of ground-level methane in local areas have been analyzed using Shandong Province as an example. Background and aim: Two oral antivirals (Nirmatrelvir- ritonavir and Azvudine) are widely used in China practice during the Omicron wave of the pandemic. However, little evidence regarding the real-world effectiveness of these two oral antivirals in in-hospital patients. We aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir versus azvudine among adult hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from three Chinese PLA General Hospital medical centres. Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 treated with azvudine or nirmatrelvir-ritonavir from Dec 10, 2022, to February 20, 2023, and did not require invasive ventilation support on admission were eligible for inclusion. Results: After exclusions and propensity-score matching, the final analysis included 486 azvudine recipients and 486 nirmatrelvir-ritonavir recipients. By 28 days of initiation of the antivirus treatment, the crude incidence rate of all-cause death was similar in both types of antivirus treatment (nirmatrelvir-ritonavir group 2.8 events 1000 person-days [95% CI, 2.1–3.6] vs azvudine group 3.4 events/1000 person-days [95% CI, 2.6–4.3], P = 0.38). Landmark analysis showed that all-cause death was lower in the nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (3.5%) group than the azvudine (6.8%, P = 0.029) within the initial 10-day admission period, while no significant difference was observed for results between 10 and 28 days follow-up. There was no significant difference between the nirmatrelvir-ritonavir group and the azvudine group in cumulative incidence of the composite disease progression event (8.6% with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir vs. 10.1% with azvudine, HR, 1.22; 95% CI 0.80–1.86, P = 0.43). Conclusion: Among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 during the omicron wave in Beijing, similar in-hospital clinical outcomes on 28 days were observed between patients receiving nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and azvudine. However, it is worth noticing that nirmatrelvir-ritonavir appears to hold an advantage over azvudine in reducing early mortality. Chilli pepper is one of the most important and widely cultivated pepper types in China. It has high nutritional and economic value. Capsicum frutescens L. is one of the chilli pepper types in production. In October 2022, a new disease showing blight of the entire chilli pepper plant was observed in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. The fungal isolates consistently obtained from the diseased samples were identified as Diaporthe caryae C. M. Tian & Qin Yang based on morphological characteristics, pathogenicity test and phylogenetic analysis of four genes, including internal transcribed spacer region (rDNA‐ITS), translation elongation factor 1‐alpha gene (TEF1), beta‐tubulin gene (TUB2), and calmodulin (CAL). Although other Diaporthe species have been reported as pathogens of peppers previously, to our knowledge, this is the first report of D. caryae causing stem blight of pepper in the world. D. caryae was reported to be able to infect various fruit trees such as kiwifruit, peach, pear, and pecan, resulting in kiwifruit rot, peach constriction canker, pear shoot canker, and pecan dieback, respectively. Background: China has a high mortality from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The NPC mortality trends in China from 2006 to 2020 were described and analyzed to understand its epidemiological characteristics by region and sex and to explore age, period, and cohort effects. Methods: This study utilized NPC mortality data from the China Health Statistical Yearbook. A joinpoint regression model was used to fit the standardized NPC mortality and age-specific mortality. The age-period-cohort model was applied to investigate age, period, and cohort effects on NPC mortality risk. Results: The results showed that the NPC mortality rate in China has been declining steadily. From 2006 to 2020, the standardized NPC mortality rate in most age groups showed a significant downward trend. The annual percentage change was smaller in rural areas than in urban areas. The mortality risks of rural males and rural females from 2016 to 2020 were 1.139 times and 1.080 times those from 2011 to 2015, respectively. Both urban males born in 1984–1988 and rural males born in 1979–1983 exhibited an increasing trend in NPC mortality risk. Conclusions: Our study confirmed the effectiveness of NPC prevention and treatment strategies in China from 2006 to 2020. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been widely concerned as an important precursor of haze. The petrochemical industry not only has many VOC emission sources, but also produces a large amount of VOCs. Although some scholars have analyzed the emission sources of VOCs in the oilfield industry, there still exists the gap in quantitative accounting the emission of organic volatiles from oilfield sewage pools. Moreover, such studies lack certain standardization, accuracy and validity in China. At present, most of the sewage pools in oilfield stations are open-ended. A large amount of VOCs are released into the surrounding environment during the storage of oily wastewater, which has caused serious environmental pollution. In this work, considering six significant influencing factors, a fast VOC emission accounting method from sewage pool in oilfield has been established. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to conduct VOC emission quantitative accounting study based on multi-field coupling numerical simulation technology, method of experimental design, and statistical analysis of the response surface methodology. Through comparing the results of numerical simulation with COMSOL, laboratory experiment, and the published literature, the results show that the error is in the range of reasonable, which can satisfy the rapid accounting of VOC emissions from sewage pool in oilfield. Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a popular condiment used as both medicine and food. Garlic production in China is severely affected by continuous cropping and is especially affected by leaf blight disease. Garlic is sterile, so it is very important to develop specialized genotypes, such as those for disease resistance, nutritional quality, and plant architecture, through genetic modification and innovation. In this experiment, we applied the induction method using EMS to mutate garlic cloves of cultivar G024. From the mutations, 5000 M0 mutants were generated and planted in the field. Then, 199 M1 mutant lines were screened according to growth potential and resistance to leaf blight. From M2 to M3, 169 generational lines were selected that grew well and were resistant to leaf blight in the field. Thereafter, their resistance to leaf blight was further analyzed in the lab; 21 lines resistant to leaf blight that had good growth potential were identified, among which 3 mutants were significantly different, and these were further screened. Also, transcriptome analysis of two mutants infected with Pleospora herbarum, A150 and G024, was performed, and the results revealed 2026 and 4678 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. These DEGs were highly enriched in hormone signaling pathway, plant–pathogen interaction, and MAPK signaling pathway. Therefore, the results provide a theoretical and technical basis for the creation of garlic germplasm resistant to leaf blight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with Chinglish as Chinese-English translations found on public bilingual signage in the People's Republic of China. After a short review of the existing literature, this study attempts to establish a typology of Chinglish with corpus-based research. Additionally, the corpus serves for geographical and statistical analysis. This study finds that the majority of errors are over-literal translations with grammatical mistakes. Only a few signs feature irrelevant wording, Pinyin or typos. Very few signs feature Gibberish with completely unintelligible word fragments or a random set of characters. The problem does not lie with the sign producer, since most of the time the words appear to be correctly copied and stenciled onto a sign surface, the problem lies with the translator. The number of Propaganda Chinglish signs is very low, given the commercial nature of more than 90% of the corpus. Noticeably, more than 80% of the signs carrying non-commercial information or guidance or warnings do not feature the institution, official bureaus or authorities that issued the signs. Tourism is a major contributor of the corpus with about one fourth of the total number of signs. Further research is needed to elaborate on the decorative use of English in the commercial realm, where the existence of non-Chinese lettering is used to establish an appearance of cosmopolitanism or the status of an international brand. The anonymous nature of the communication between the issuing institution and the general public is another striking feature of the present research results. Subsurface stormflow is a dominant runoff mechanism in steep humid mountainous areas. An insite measurement of subsurface stormflow suggests that the bedrock surface plays an important role in the runoff generation and routing process, which was rarely adopted in hydrological modelling studies. To improve the runoff simulation performance, the bedrock surface topographic index is introduced, and a modified TOPMODEL based on the bedrock surface topographic index is developed to simulate the runoff. The modified TOPMODEL is applied to the Huangbengliu (HBL), a steep watershed in Gongga Mountain, and proved to be more appropriate for the HBL watershed, especially for peak simulation. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) is improved from 0.24 to 0.58 in the calibration period and from 0.40 to 0.62 in the verification period. The result of this study can advance the understanding of the mechanism of flash floods and contribute flood control and disaster prevention in the HBL watershed and similar areas. Objective: To evaluate the effects of auricular acupoint bloodletting (AB) and auricular acupressure (AA) on sleep quality and the levels of melatonin (MT), glutamic acid (Glu), and γ -aminobutyric acid (GABA) in college students with primary insomnia, and to explore the possible mechanism. Methods: Totally 74 college students at Hebei University of Chinese Medicine with primary insomnia were selected from October 2019 to October 2020. All patients were assigned to AB+AA group (37 cases, received combination of AB and AA) and AA group (37 cases, received only AA on the same acupoints) by a random number table. Each group was treated twice a week for 4 weeks. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, Chinese medicine (CM) syndrome score, total effective rate, serum concentrations of MT, Glu, and GABA, and Glu/GABA ratio were compared between the two groups after treatment and at follow-up. The safety of therapy was also evaluated. Results: After 4-week treatment, the total scores of PSQI, each PSQI component score, and the CM syndrome scores in both groups all decreased (P<0.05); the serum MT concentrations in both groups all increased (P<0.05). The concentrations of Glu and GABA in the AB+AA group were significantly higher than those in the AA group after treatment (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the ratio of Glu/GABA in both groups before and after treatment (P>0.05). At follow-up, the CM syndrome score in the AB+AA group was significantly lower than that in the AA group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in total effective rates and adverse events (P>0.05). Conclusions: Both AB+AA and AA can relieve insomnia symptoms, but a stronger long-term effect were observed for AB+AA. AB+AA can promote the secretion of MT, increase the levels of Glu and GABA more effective than AA, and regulate their imbalance, and thus it may be benificial for treating insomnia. Host‐related microbiota are critically important for the adaptation/acclimation of hosts to changing environments, but how environmental factors and host characteristics shape the microbial communities remains largely unknown. We investigated the effects of temperature on habitat‐forming macroalgae and their associated bacterial communities. Three Sargassum species (S. horneri, S. fusiforme, and S. thunbergii) and seawater samples were sampled in Gouqi Island, China, and these macroalgal samples were incubated at different temperatures (10, 20, and 27°C) for 7 d. Bacterial communities were identified from the 16S rRNA gene V3–V4 regions. The algae‐associated bacterial communities of the field samples were significantly different from seawater, implying host specificity. During laboratory incubation, decreased physiological status (photosynthetic rate and oxidative stress response) was detected for all the species at 10°C, especially with regard to S. horneri and S. fusiforme. For each host, associated bacterial communities at 20 and 27°C clustered closely, and these were separated from samples at 10°C based on constrained PCoA analyses. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance revealed that algae‐associated bacterial communities were more affected by host species (23.3%) than by temperature (2.48%) during laboratory incubation. The changes in bacterial community composition may be influenced by algae metabolites, which should be tested in a future study. Traditional Chinese legal education is academic-oriented, which is often criticised for not preparing students for practice adequately. In order to accelerate the rebirth of the Chinese legal profession, a new practice-oriented legal qualification, the Juris Master, was created by the Chinese State. However, since its inception, the Juris Master has been beset with problems. This article analyses the major problems in the Juris Master in terms of educational goals, the teaching content and teaching methods and the management of faculties, and examines their causes from the political, cultural, and social perspectives. In response to these problems, this article suggests solutions in four aspects: competence-based educational goals, problem-based learning methods, an integrative international curriculum, and part-time faculty employment systems. Debris slopes are widely distributed across the Three Gorges Reservoir area in China, and seasonal fluctuations of the water level in the area tend to cause high-frequency microseisms that subsequently induce landslides on such debris slopes. In this study, a cumulative damage model of debris slope with varying slope characteristics under the effects of frequent microseisms was established, based on the accurate definition of slope damage variables. The cumulative damage behaviour and the mechanisms of slope instability and sliding under frequent microseisms were thus systematically investigated through a series of shaking table tests and discrete element numerical simulations, and the influences of related parameters such as bedrock, dry density and stone content were discussed. The results showed that the instability mode of a debris slope can be divided into a vibration-compaction stage, a crack generation stage, a crack development stage, and an instability stage. Under the action of frequent microseisms, debris slope undergoes the last three stages cyclically, which causes the accumulation to slide out in layers under the synergistic action of tension and shear, causing the slope to become destabilised. There are two sliding surfaces as well as the parallel tensile surfaces in the final instability of the debris slope. In the process of instability, the development trend of the damage accumulation curve remains similar for debris slopes with different parameters. However, the initial vibration compaction effect in the bedrock-free model is stronger than that in the bedrock model, with the overall cumulative damage degree in the former being lower than that of the latter. The damage degree of the debris slope with high dry density also develops more slowly than that of the debris slope with low dry density. The damage development rate of the debris slope does not always decrease with the increase of stone content. The damage degree growth rate of the debris slope with the optimal stone content is the lowest, and the increase or decrease of the stone content makes the debris slope instability happen earlier. The numerical simulation study also further reveals that the damage in the debris slope mainly develops in the form of crack formation and penetration, in which, shear failure occurs more frequently in the debris slope. Ceftiofur, a third‐generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is being extensively used by pet doctors in China. In the current study, the detection method was developed for ceftiofur and its metabolites, desfuroylceftiofur (DCE) and desfuroylceftiofur conjugates (DCEC), in feline plasma. Then, the pharmacokinetics studies were performed following one single intravenous and subcutaneous injection of ceftiofur sodium in cats both at 5 mg/kg body weight (BW) (calculated as pure ceftiofur). Ceftiofur, DCE, and DCEC were extracted from plasma samples, then derivatized and further quantified by high‐performance liquid chromatography. The concentrations versus time data were subjected to noncompartmental analysis to obtain the pharmacokinetics parameters. The terminal half‐life (t1/2λz) was calculated as 11.29 ± 1.09 and 10.69 ± 1.31 hr following intravenous and subcutaneous injections, respectively. After intravenous treatment, the total body clearance (Cl) and volume of distribution at steady‐state (VSS) were determined as 14.14 ± 1.09 ml hr‐1 kg‐1 and 241.71 ± 22.40 ml/kg, respectively. After subcutaneous injection, the peak concentration (Cmax; 14.99 ± 2.29 μg/ml) was observed at 4.17 ± 0.41 hr, and the absorption half‐life (t1/2ka) and absolute bioavailability (F) were calculated as 2.83 ± 0.46 hr and 82.95%±9.59%, respectively. The pharmacokinetic profiles of ceftiofur sodium and its related metabolites demonstrated their relatively slow, however, good absorption after subcutaneous administration, poor distribution, and slow elimination in cats. Based on the time of drug concentration above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (T>MIC) calculated in the current study, an intravenous or subcutaneous dose at 5 mg/kg BW of ceftiofur sodium once daily is predicted to be effective for treating feline bacteria with a MIC value of ≤4.0 μg/ml. Planthoppers (Nilaparvata lugens, Sogatella furcifera, and Laodelphax striatellus) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are the most important pests affecting rice production. Pesticide spraying for its control may cause harmful effects on human health and the environment, especially the loss of biodiversity. The consequences of these changes on biodiversity and ecological services are well studied in tropical irrigated paddy fields, but are largely unknown in subtropical areas. Organic regime provides an environment-friendly method for biodiversity conservation; however, it is unclear whether this regime can suppress planthopper populations effectively in paddy fields. Consequently, we compared species richness, abundance, community structure, and evenness of natural enemies and planthoppers between organic and conventional rice fields (n = 35) distributed across four sites in China. The results showed that species richness was higher in organic fields than in conventional fields. Shannon index and evenness of predators and parasitoids were higher in most of the organic fields than their conventional counterparts. Furthermore, planthopper density showed a significant negative relationship with increased richness and evenness for both predators and parasitoids. These results underscore the notion that management regimes influence biodiversity in rice field. Most importantly, this has direct implications on the efficacy of natural pest control services rendered by predators and parasitoids associated with planthoppers in China and potentially other rice production regions in Asia. Despite the positive role of English morphology in word learning, the existing evidence is mainly on young L1 native speakers' receptive word gains. This intervention study, which employed a pretest-posttest control-experimental group design, was conducted to explore the effects of morphological training on multiple aspects of academic vocabulary learning. Participants (N = 50) were college EFL learners from southern China, who received either traditional vocabulary instruction or morphological training for 6 weeks. The 2 × 2 ANOVA analysis revealed significant instructional effects on receptive academic vocabulary learning, but not for productive academic word knowledge. Results are discussed in light of the important connection between morphology and receptive word learning, and the nature of productive vocabulary acquisition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Coronary artery disease is prevalent in China, with concomitant increases in the volume of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The present study aims to compare CABG-related outcomes between China and the United States among large teaching and urban hospitals.Methods and Results: Observational analysis of patients aged ≥18 years, discharged from acute-care, large teaching and urban hospitals in China and the United States after hospitalization for an isolated CABG surgery. Data were obtained from the Chinese Cardiac Surgery Registry in China and the National Inpatient Sample in the United States. Analysis was stratified by 2 periods: 2007, 2008, and 2010; and 2011 to 2013 periods. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality, and the secondary outcome was length of stay. The sample included 51 408 patients: 32 040 from 77 hospitals in the China-CABG group and 19 368 from 303 hospitals in the US-CABG group. In the 2007 to 2008, 2010 period and for all-age and aged ≥65 years, the China-CABG group had higher mortality than the US-CABG group (1.91% versus 1.58%, P=0.059; and 3.12% versus 2.20%, P=0.004) and significantly higher age-, sex-, and comorbidity-adjusted odds of death (odds ratio, 1.58; 95% confidential interval, 1.22-2.04; and odds ratio, 1.73; 95% confidential interval, 1.24-2.40). There were no significant mortality differences in the 2011 to 2013 period. For preoperative, postoperative, and total hospital stay, respectively, the median (interquartile range) length of stay across the entire study period between China-CABG and US-CABG groups were 9 (8) versus 1 (3), 9 (6) versus 6 (3), and 20 (12) versus 7 (5) days (all P<0.001). This difference did not change significantly over time.Conclusions: In 2011 to 2013, there was no significant difference in in-hospital mortality among patients who underwent an isolated CABG surgery in large teaching and urban hospitals in China and the United States. In the last century, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been extensively used, especially in South China, to promote crop yield. In view of their toxicity, persistence and bioavailability, however, the Chinese government has attempted to regulate their production and use. We aimed to examine the biological risk, source and pollution history of OCPs in the sediment in Nansha mangrove which is located in the industrial region in South China. Results showed that HCHs and DDTs, mainly originating from lindane and technical DDT respectively, were the dominant OCPs, but their concentrations were too low to cause adverse effects on biota. In the last decade, the total concentration of HCHs showed a decreasing trend, whereas DDTs remained stable, despite their limited input. Heavy metal contamination in a long-term wastewater irrigation area in north China was investigated. The highest concentrations of Cr, Cd, Pb, As, Zn, and Cu in topsoil were 113.58, 3.78, 13.91, 14.44, 90.75, and 95.53 mg/kg, respectively. The Nemerow's synthetical pollution index was below 0.7, suggesting that this area belonged to a safe domain. The bioavailable concentrations of the heavy metals in this area were also maintained at low level. The correlation between Al (or Fe) and other heavy metals proved that concentrations of Pb, As, and Zn in soil might be mainly affected by the soil natural material. Spatial distributions analysis of heavy metals in this area indicated that the sewage irrigation might also have influence on heavy metals pollution in this long-term wastewater irrigation area. The vertical profile of heavy metals concentrations in this area showed that all the heavy metals in surface soil layer were in the highest concentration and began to decrease with the increase in soil depth. The low concentration of heavy metals in wastewater and soil suggested a potential sustainability of the long-term wastewater irrigation area where the good quality wastewater was available for agricultural usage. Abstract: Objective: The aim of our study was to validate association between −8 C/G variant of PSMA6 gene and T2DM in Chinese Dongxiang and Han populations. Method: We genotyped PSMA6 gene −8 C/G polymorphism in the control groups and T2DM groups in two populations from China using PCR-RFLP technique. Phenotypes and biochemical indicators were measured by biochemical technique. Result: The frequencies of CG+GG genotype were observably different from CC genotype in the T2DM groups and control groups (for Dongxiang population: OR=1.341, 95% CI: 1.101–1.632, P =0.004; for Han population: OR=1.313, 95% CI: 1.085–1.569, P =0.006 after adjusting for gender, age, and BMI, respectively). In the Dongxiang population, the FPG, HOMA-IR, SBP and TG levels of CG+GG genotype were markedly higher than those of the CC genotype in control group (all P <0.05). However, in the Han population, we only found that the FPI level of the CC genotype was significantly higher than that of the CG+GG genotype in control group (P <0.05). Conclusion: Our investigation suggests that −8 C/G variant of PSMA6 gene may be associated with T2DM and diabetes-related metabolic traits in Chinese Dongxiang and Han populations. Because of the recent growth in ground-level ozone and increased emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), VOC emission control has become a major concern in China. In response, emission caps to control VOC have been stipulated in recent policies, but few of them were constrained by the co-control target of PM 2.5 and ozone, and discussed the factor that influence the emission cap formulation. Herein, we proposed a framework for quantification of VOC emission caps constrained by targets for PM 2.5 and ozone via a new response surface modeling (RSM) technique, achieving 50% computational cost savings of the quantification. In the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, the VOC emission caps constrained by air quality targets varied greatly with the NO x emission reduction level. If control measures in the surrounding areas of the PRD region were not considered, there could be two feasible strategies for VOC emission caps to meet air quality targets (160 µg/m3 for the maximum 8-hr-average 90th-percentile (MDA8-90%) ozone and 25 µg/m3 for the annual average of PM 2.5): a moderate VOC emission cap with <20% NO x emission reductions or a notable VOC emission cap with >60% NO x emission reductions. If the ozone concentration target were reduced to 155 µg/m3, deep NO x emission reductions is the only feasible ozone control measure in PRD. Optimization of seasonal VOC emission caps based on the Monte Carlo simulation could allow us to gain higher ozone benefits or greater VOC emission reductions. If VOC emissions were further reduced in autumn, MDA8-90% ozone could be lowered by 0.3-1.5 µg/m3, equaling the ozone benefits of 10% VOC emission reduction measures. The method for VOC emission cap quantification and optimization proposed in this study could provide scientific guidance for coordinated control of regional PM 2.5 and O 3 pollution in China. This paper deals with Chinglish as Chinese-English translations found on public bilingual signage in the People's Republic of China. After a short review of the existing literature, this study attempts to establish a typology of Chinglish with corpus-based research. Additionally, the corpus serves for geographical and statistical analysis. This study finds that the majority of errors are over-literal translations with grammatical mistakes. Only a few signs feature irrelevant wording, Pinyin or typos. Very few signs feature Gibberish with completely unintelligible word fragments or a random set of characters. The problem does not lie with the sign producer, since most of the time the words appear to be correctly copied and stenciled onto a sign surface, the problem lies with the translator. The number of Propaganda Chinglish signs is very low, given the commercial nature of more than 90% of the corpus. Noticeably, more than 80% of the signs carrying non-commercial information or guidance or warnings do not feature the institution, official bureaus or authorities that issued the signs. Tourism is a major contributor of the corpus with about one fourth of the total number of signs. Further research is needed to elaborate on the decorative use of English in the commercial realm, where the existence of non-Chinese lettering is used to establish an appearance of cosmopolitanism or the status of an international brand. Abstract: Introduction: The goal of combining alemtuzumab induction therapy with low-dose tacrolimus monotherapy in small-bowel transplantation (SBTx) is to enable improved graft acceptance without immunologic unresponsiveness caused by stronger immunosuppression regimens. Herein, we report preliminary experience using this protocol in 5 patients who underwent SBTx in China. Methods: Patients received methylprednisolone sodium succinate (Solu-Medrol), 1 g, followed by alemtuzumab infusion, 30 mg, during SBTx and another gram of prednisolone before reperfusion. Tacrolimus monotherapy without steroid was used for maintenance immunosuppression. Tacrolimus trough levels were 10 to 15 ng/dL during the first 3 months, and weaned to 5 to 10 ng/mL after 3 months. Results: Three recipients have survived for longer than 1 year; 1 patient is currently alive at 9 months, and another at 5 months post-SBTx. Grafts in these 5 recipients achieved excellent function, and in all patients, total parenteral nutrition was discontinued at 2 to 3 weeks postoperatively and normal oral intake was resumed. One recipient died at 13 months post-SBTx of severe rejection; the condition of the other 4 recipients who were still alive was good. Pathologic analysis of ileoscopic biopsy specimens revealed 4 episodes of indeterminate to mild acute cellular rejection (ACR) at 1 to 3 months, 3 episodes of indeterminate to mild ACR at 4 to 6 months, 3 episodes of moderate ACR at 7 to 12 months, and 1 episode of severe ACR at 13 months. All episodes of indeterminate to moderate ACR were totally resolved; only treatment of severe ACR failed. One patient experienced an episode of invasive fungal infection and another episode of cytomegaloviral infection, with total recovery after treatment. Conclusions: Our preliminary experience in these 5 cases showed that the protocol combining alemtuzumab induction therapy with low-dose tacrolimus monotherapy without maintenance steroid therapy past-SBTx can effectively control rejection with excellent graft function. It displays not only parity-specific differences but also regional differences. Furthermore, the higher the birth-order, the higher the sex ratio at birth. Recently, Guangdong and Hainan Provinces show the highest sex ratios at birth. Sex-selective abortion is responsible for such high sex ratios at birth. Son preference is a result of many social, economic, cultural, and policy factors combined together, and under current circumstances it is relatively difficult to stop or reverse such a trend. Objective: This study was undertaken to delineate outcomes and to assess risk factors for in-hospital mortality among Chinese patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Methods: From 2007 to 2008, a total of 9838 consecutive adult patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting were enrolled in the Chinese Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Registry, which included 43 centers from 17 province-level regions in China. This registry collected information on 67 preoperative factors and 30 operative factors believed to influence in-hospital mortality. The relationship between risk factors and in-hospital mortality was evaluated by univariate and logistic regression analyses. Results: Overall in-hospital mortality was 2.5%. Eleven risk factors were found to be significant predictors for outcome: age (continuous), body mass index (continuous), left ventricular ejection fraction (continuous), preoperative New York Heart Association functional class III or IV, chronic renal failure, extracardiac arteriopathy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, preoperative atrial fibrillation or flutter (within 2 weeks), preoperative critical state, other than elective surgery, and combined valve procedure. Calibration with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test was satisfactory (P = .35), and the discrimination power was good (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.79–0.84). Conclusions: The risk profiles and in-hospital mortality of Chinese patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting were determined from data in the most up-to-date multi-institutional database. Bacterial biodiversity is tightly correlated with ecological functions of natural systems, and bacterial rare and abundant subcommunities make distinct contributions to ecosystem functioning. However, the biogeographic pattern and elevational differentiation of sedimentary bacterial diversity have rarely been studied in cross-river systems at a continental scale. This study analyzed the biogeographic patterns and elevational differentiations of the entire, abundant, and rare bacterial (sub) communities as well as the underlying mechanisms across nine rivers that span distinct geographic regions and large elevational gradients in China. We found that bacterial rare and abundant subcommunities shared similar biogeographic patterns and both demonstrated strong distance-decay relationships, despite their distinct community compositions. However, both null model and variation partitioning analysis results showed that while environmental selection governed rare subcommunity assemblies (contribution: 51.9%), dispersal limitation (62.7%) controlled the assembly of abundant subcommunities. The disparity was associated with the broader threshold width of abundant taxa to water temperature and pH variations than rare taxa. Elevation-induced bacterial composition variations were more evident than latitudeinduced ones. Some specific operational taxonomic units (OTUs), representing 16.4% of the total sequences, much preferentially and even exclusively lived in high-elevation or low-elevation habitats and demonstrated some adaptations to local conditions. Greater positive: negative link ratios in bacterial co-occurrence networks of low elevations than high elevations (P < 0.05) partly resulted from their harboring higher organic carbon: nitrogen ratios. Together, this study draws a biogeographic picture of sedimentary bacterial communities in a continental-scale riverine system and highlights the importance of incorporating elevation-associated patterns of microbial diversity into riverine microbial ecology studies. Background: Most countries in the world, including China, are experiencing serious aging problems. The decline of cognitive function seriously affects the quality of life of the elderly in their later years and brings an inevitable heavy burden to the family and society. Therefore, in order to achieve successful aging, the purpose of this study is to test the serial multiple mediation effect of anxiety and loneliness between leisure activity and cognitive function in Chinese elderly population.Methods: Using 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset, we finally selected 6,525 Chinese elderly people over 65 years old after screening. Firstly, we described the basic social demographic information of the sample population. Secondly, Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine whether there is a correlation between leisure activity, anxiety, loneliness and cognitive function in Chinese elderly. Finally, the serial multiple mediation analysis was completed using the SPSS macro PROCESS program.Results: Leisure activity, anxiety, loneliness and cognitive function were significantly correlated (p<0.01). Leisure activity can not only have a direct positive impact on the cognitive function of the elderly (effect=0.2231; SE=0.0122; 95%CI: LL=0.1992, UL=0.2470), but also have an indirect impact on the cognitive function through three paths: the independent mediating role of anxiety (effect=0.0028; SE=0.0015; 95%CI: LL=0.0001, UL=0.0059), the independent mediating role of loneliness (effect=0.0032; SE=0.0016; 95%CI: LL=0.0002, UL=0.0065), and the chain mediating role of anxiety and loneliness (effect=0.0008; SE=0.0004; 95%CI: LL=0.0001, UL=0.0017).Limitations: All items were self-reported and some results may have biased. In the future, it may be more instructive to explore the impact of specific leisure activity on the cognitive function of the elderly.Conclusions: The study suggests that leisure activity can improve cognitive function through decreasing anxiety and loneliness among the Chinese elderly. Over the last decade, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region has seen substantial improvements in PM 2.5 concentrations, which can be attributed to both local emission reductions and nationwide efforts. To formulate effective strategies for long-term PM 2.5 mitigation in the PRD, it is essential to understand the benefits derived from emission reductions in various regions. In this study, we employed a simulation-based decomposition analysis to evaluate the impact of national and local emission changes on PM 2.5 and its composition in the PRD region from 2006 to 2020. The downturn in annual average PM 2.5 concentrations in the PRD region from 2006 to 2020 primarily stems from local emission reductions, constituting 41–55% of the overall improvement, and nationwide emission reductions (excluding those within the PRD), which add another 10–28% to the improvement. The PM 2.5 improvement associated with local emission reduction primarily originates from industrial sources, power plants, and vehicles. Both local and nationwide emission reductions significantly curtail sulfate concentrations, but their impact on nitrate concentrations are relatively moderate, impeded by the ozone rebound due to the inappropriate reduction ratio of NO x /VOCs emissions, particularly in regions with VOCs-limited regime. Since 2013, as a result of China's accelerated efforts to reduce air pollution, national emission reductions have played a larger role in reducing PM 2.5 concentrations in the PRD region, especially in the autumn and winter seasons when their contributions to PM 2.5 decline can reach 44% and 54%, respectively. Therefore, comprehensive ozone control as well as coordinated regional emission reductions will be crucial for the long-term improvement of PM 2.5 in the PRD. Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen in hospital-acquired infections, and carbapenem resistance has been increasingly observed worldwide. Oxacillinase production by blaOXA-23 is a predominant and prevalent carbapenem resistance mechanism of A. baumannii, especially in China. Rapid and specific detection of blaOXA-23 may offer valuable insight for administration of directed antimicrobial therapy. In this study, we aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based method for identifying carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB) harboring the blaOXA-23 gene. High-specificity primers for screening blaOXA-23 were designed and synthesized, and the LAMP reactions were performed. Clinical A. baumannii strains isolated from the Former 307th Hospital of People's Liberation Army were used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of this method compared with those of phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the traditional PCR method. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed to investigate the epidemiology of the A. baumannii bacterial population. Compared with antimicrobial susceptibility testing, the sensitivity and specificity of LAMP in detecting blaOXA-23 were 88.4% and 97.7%, respectively. However, the LAMP method is much simpler and less time-consuming (within 60 minutes) than conventional PCR and phenotypic susceptibility testing. The 113 isolates could be clustered into 30 sequence types, and most strains (83/113) belonged to clonal complex (CC) 92, which is also the dominant CC in China. The LAMP-based method detected blaOXA-23 in a simpler manner and could provide rapid results for identifying CRAB. Abstract A sub-catchment of the Haihe River basin goes through the Beijing-Tianjin region with a population of 26 million, therefore, the use and release of home and personal care product ingredients (HPCPs) to the river catchment could be potentially substantial. Many HPCPs have been shown to be toxic to human and animals. So, it is essential to know the exposure level of HPCPs in the river basin. The average concentrations of five preservatives, three disinfectants and an antioxidant were found to be 398, 352 and 77.7 ng L−1, respectively, in the dry season. The chemical concentrations in the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and untreated wastewater discharge were respectively ca. 1.3–2.2 and 1.6–7.5 times higher than those in river water. The mass flux of ∑HPCPs has been estimated to be 8.7 g/h at the outfall of the Shahe Reservoir and 181 g/h and 214 g/h at the estuary of the Haihe River and Yongdingxin River to Bohai Bay, respectively. The attenuation of ∑HPCPs was over 79% along the Wenyu River. By using the backward method, the estimated average loadings to WWTPs ranged from 0.51 to 2.0 mg/day/cap for the various individual compounds. They were 1–3 orders of magnitude higher than the estimation from the forward calculation for parabens. This indicates the possible underestimation of chemical usage and human exposure levels by the current published studies or the probably additional industrial release to the target catchment. Such a study provides useful information for the development of chemical management approaches and indicates that further research is needed to improve the estimation of HPCPs usage and emissions to aquatic environment. China's urban population has experienced rapid fertility decline over the past six decades. This drastic change will have a significant impact on China's demographic, social and economic future. However, the patterns and characteristics of urban China's fertility decline have not been systematically examined. This study analyses the trends and age patterns of fertility in urban China since the 1950s, and summarizes the major characteristics of reproductive behaviours into four 'lows': extremely 'low' level of fertility; 'low' proportion of two and higher parity births; 'low' mean age at birth; and 'low' level of childlessness. The paper argues that the highly homogenous reproductive behaviours found in China's now near 800 million urban population have been in part shaped by the country's unprecedented government intervention in family planning. The 'later, longer, fewer' campaign in the 1970s and the 'one-child' policy, in particular, have left clear imprints on China's reproductive norms and fertility patterns. The government-led family planning programme, however, has not been the only driving force of fertility decline. A wide range of social, economic, political and cultural changes have also affected the transition in family formation, reproductive behaviour and fertility patterns, and this has become increasingly prominent in the past two decades. The Nanling Range (NLR) is the largest tungsten metallogenic province in China and perhaps in the world. The tungsten mineralization is believed to be related to Jurassic granitic magmatism. However, the petrogenesis of these granites and their relation to the tungsten mineralization are still debated. Whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data and zircon in situ U–Pb ages and Hf–O isotopes are reported for W-bearing granitic intrusions from the southern Jiangxi Province in the NLR, in order to constrain their magmatic sources and petrogenesis. The NLR granites include biotite granites, two-mica granites and garnet muscovite granites. SIMS and LA-ICPMS U–Pb dating of zircons and monazites give emplacement ages of 161–154 Ma for these rocks. The granites are metaluminous to strongly peraluminous with high SiO 2 (> 72.3 wt.%) and high K 2 O (> 3.7 wt.%). Petrographic and geochemical features show that they are highly fractionated I-type granites. The biotite granites are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) relative to heavy REEs, have weakly negative Eu anomalies and are depleted in Nb, Ba, P and Ti. In contrast, the two-mica and garnet-bearing muscovite granites have tetrad-type REE patterns with strongly negative Eu anomalies and are extremely depleted in Ba, Nb, Sr, P and Ti. Magmatic garnets are mainly almandine and spessartine, and have low-Mn cores and high-Mn rims. Their (Y + HREE) contents are high and generally decrease from core (1.2 wt.%) to rim (average = 4955 ppm). All of these granites are characterized by variable whole-rock initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0.7053–0.8000), ε Nd (t) (− 12.6 to − 9.4) and ε Hf (t) (− 12.3 to − 8.5), as well as variable zircon ε Hf (t) and δ 18 O, with values of − 16.3 to − 7.4 and 7.6 to 10.0‰, respectively. They contain abundant zircon xenocrysts and xenoliths of micaceous schist. All of these features are consistent with a process of crystal fractionation of crustally-derived magmas coupled with strong assimilation of sedimentary rocks. The assimilation of meta-sedimentary materials increased the concentrations of tungsten, alumina and manganese in the magmas, whereas high degrees of crystal fractionation further enriched them in the evolved granitic rocks. The W-enriched magmatic fluids formed the tungsten-bearing quartz veins, revealing the genetic relationship between tungsten mineralization and emplacement of garnet-bearing two-mica or muscovite granites in the NLR. Abstract: The urban labour market in China has been institutionally segmented, partly due to the hukou (household registration) system, in which rural-to-urban migrants have been discriminated against. However, the analytical framework in the literature that is based on the rural–urban divide fails to capture the diverse nature of the urban floating population, in which the urban-to-urban migrant segment is a growing proportion. This paper considers this regional divide, based on the dichotomy of migrants and locals, and examines the discrimination experienced alongside the rural–urban divide. By using original survey data collected from four megacities, this study analyses and compares employment attainments and wage differentials between rural migrants, urban migrants and urban locals. The results demonstrate the existence of the dual divides, and show that, compared with urban locals, rural migrants suffer employment and wage discrimination, while urban migrants suffer only employment discrimination. Abstract: Background: Human CoV-HKU1 (HCoV-HKU1) has been isolated from a 71-year-old man with pneumonia; however, the impact and role of emerging HCoV-HKU1 have not been defined in children with acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI). Objective: To investigate the Prevalence and clinical characteristics of HCoV-HKU1 in children with ARTI in Lanzhou, China. Study design: The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or PCR was employed to screen HCoV-HKU1 and other common respiratory viruses in 645 nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) specimens collected from children with ARTI from November 2006 to October 2008. All PCR positive products were sequenced. And the demographic and clinical data were collected for all patients. Results: Nineteen of 645 (2.95%) specimens tested positive for HCoV-HKU1, and all HCoV-HKU1 positive specimens were distributed in the winter and spring season. The HCoV-HKU1 co-infection rate with other respiratory viruses was 47.37% (9/19). There was no statistically significant difference in the detection rate between groups by age or gender, except between patients with and without underlying diseases. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that HCoV-HKU1 genotype B was circulating in the years 2007 and 2008 in children with ARTI in Lanzhou, China. Conclusions: HCoV-HKU1 is an uncommon virus existing among Chinese children with ARTI. Children with underlying diseases are more vulnerable to viral infection. Here, we compared a short- (42 days) with a long-term (30 years) drainage experiment, and quantified the activities of the decomposition-related extracellular enzymes as well as C, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometries in a minerotrophic peatland in northeastern China. The results showed that the key hydrolytic enzymatic activities increased by 2–145% and 25–465% under short- and long-term drainage respectively, but the preserved nutrients and C in the peat did not vary considerably. The minerotrophic peatland seems to be a complex adaptive system with great resilience to tackle the short- and long-term drainage with two disparate mechanisms. Specifically, the intrinsic nature of severe nutrient-deficiency may weaken enzymatic constraints on decomposition (the 'enzymatic latch' mechanism) during the short-term drainage. In contrast, the increases in phenolics input and litter quality due to the shift in vegetation composition may alleviate the threat to C stores during the long-term drainage. These distinct regulatory mechanisms over the course of progressive lowering of water table may potentially provide new insights to assess the risk and benefit of drainage in peatlands. Concentrations of widely used antibiotics were predicted to be the highest in the Haihe River Catchment across China previously, potentially resulting in high ecotoxicological risks in this region. As a result of growing usage and regulation of antibiotic use in animals, the pattern of use may have altered temporally for different antibiotics. It is important to monitor the occurrence of antibiotics within different categories for understanding their mass loading to the catchment and the potential ecotoxicological risks involved. This study investigated the seasonal occurrence and spatial variation of 15 antibiotics in the Haihe River Catchment during 2016–2017. The investigated compounds included veterinary antibiotics, human-use antibiotics, and those intended for both human and animal use. Measurements reported from previous studies were compared with the results of this study and indicated that the use of veterinary antibiotics is probably increasing around the catchment. The ∑antibiotics concentration (i.e. the summed concentration of the 15 target antibiotics) ranged from 414 to 1951 ng/L, with an average of 821 ng/L. Discharges from wastewater treatment plants were the main sources of these compounds. The mass loading of antibiotics to the river waters was higher during wet seasons than during dry seasons. The mass fluxes of the antibiotics continuously increased towards the lower reaches of the rivers. The total annual input of the antibiotics from the Haihe River and Yongdingxin River into the Bohai Bay was 5008 kg/yr. Ofloxacin, trimethoprim, leucomycin, anhydro erythromycin and florfenicol were the predominant antibiotics, whilst amoxicillin, anhydro erythromycin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin and enrofloxacin may pose high ecotoxicological risks to the investigated aquatic ecosystem. Several antibiotics selected in this study were reported for the first time in this catchment. This study provides important information for chemical management and indicates that further monitoring is needed on the more harmful and veterinary antibiotics in the catchment. Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the molecular transmission networks and transmitted drug resistance (TDR) patterns among individuals newly diagnosed with HIV-1 in Nanjing., Methods: Plasma samples were collected from newly diagnosed HIV patients in Nanjing between 2019 and 2021. The HIV pol gene was amplified, and the resulting sequences were utilized for determining TDR, identifying viral subtypes, and constructing molecular transmission network. Logistic regression analyses were employed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics associated with molecular transmission clusters., Results: A total of 1161 HIV pol sequences were successfully extracted from newly diagnosed individuals, each accompanied by reliable epidemiologic information. The analysis revealed the presence of multiple HIV-1 subtypes, with CRF 07&#95;BC (40.57%) and CRF01&#95;AE (38.42%) being the most prevalent. Additionally, six other subtypes and unique recombinant forms (URFs) were identified. The prevalence of TDR among the newly diagnosed cases was 7.84% during the study period. Employing a genetic distance threshold of 1.50%, the construction of the molecular transmission network resulted in the identification of 137 clusters, encompassing 613 nodes, which accounted for approximately 52.80% of the cases. Multivariate analysis indicated that individuals within these clusters were more likely to be aged ≥ 60, unemployed, baseline CD4 cell count ≥ 200 cells/mm 3 , and infected with the CRF119&#95;0107 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the analysis of larger clusters revealed that individuals aged ≥ 60, peasants, those without TDR, and individuals infected with the CRF119&#95;0107 were more likely to be part of these clusters., Conclusions: This study revealed the high risk of local HIV transmission and high TDR prevalence in Nanjing, especially the rapid spread of CRF119&#95;0107. It can provide a basis for decision making for the conservation and sustainable use of forest ecosystems in mountains to understand the stoichiometric properties and nutrient allocation strategies of major tree species. However, the plant nutrient allocation strategies under different environmental gradients in forest systems of arid and semi-arid mountains are not fully understand. Therefore, three typical regions in the Qilian Mountains on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were selected based on precipitation and temperature gradients, and the stoichiometric characteristics and nutrient allocation strategies of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) of the dominant tree species under different environmental gradients were investigated. The results showed that (1) the stoichiometric characteristics of plant tissues were different in the three regions. (2) The importance of each tissue in the plant nutrient allocation varied in different regions, showing that the plant roots are more important in the warm-wet region, while the plant leaves, branches and trunks are more important in the transition and hot-dry regions. (3) The influencing factors affecting plant nutrient allocation strategies were inconsistent across regions, which showed that plant nutrient allocation strategies in the warm-wet and transition region were mainly influenced by soil factors, while they were more influenced by climatic factors in the hot-dry region. The patterns of plant nutrient allocation strategies and drivers under different environmental gradients could help us better understand the ecological adaptation mechanism and physiological adjustment mechanism of forest ecosystem in mountains., (© 2024. The drivers and mechanisms underlying succession and the spontaneous formation of plant communities in mining wasteland remain largely unknown. This study investigated the use of nature-based restoration to facilitate the recovery of viable plant communities in mining wasteland. It was found that scientific analyses of spontaneously formed plant communities in abandoned mining areas can provide insights for nature-based restoration. A chronosequence ("space for time") approach was used to establish sites representing three successional periods with six successional stages, and 90 quadrats were constructed to investigate changes in plant species and functional diversity during succession in abandoned PbZn mining areas. A total of 140 soil samples were collected to identify changes in soil properties, including plant nutrient and heavy metal concentrations. Then, this paper used structural equation models to analyze the mechanisms that drive succession. It was found that the functional diversity of plant communities fluctuated substantially during succession. Species had similar functional traits in early and mid-succession, but traits tended to diverge during late succession. Soil bulk density and soil organic matter gradually increased during succession. Total nitrogen (N), pH, and soil Zn concentrations first increased and then decreased during succession. Concentrations of Mn and Cd gradually decreased during succession. During early succession, soil organic matter was the key factor driving plant colonization and succession. During mid-succession, soil Zn functioned as an environmental filter factor limiting the rates of succession in mining wasteland communities. During late succession, soil bulk density and competition for nutrient resources contributed to more balanced differentiation among plant species. Currently, little is available on how mercury (Hg) methylation couples with soil organic matter decomposition in degraded permafrost in high northern latitudes, where the climate is becoming warmer rapidly. Here, we revealed the complex interactions between soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and methylmercury (MeHg) production based on an 87-day anoxic warming incubation experiment. Results supported remarkably promotion effects of warming on MeHg production, by 130%-205% on average. Total mercury (THg) loss under warming treatment depended on marsh types but showed an increasing trend on the whole. Warming yielded higher proportions of MeHg to THg (%MeHg), increased by 123%-569%. As expected, greenhouse gas emission was significantly enhanced by warming. Warming also strengthened fluorescence intensities of fulvic-like and protein-like DOM, with contributions to total fluorescence intensities of 49%-92% and 8%-51%, respectively. DOM and its spectral features explained 60% variation of MeHg, and the explanation increased to 82% in conjunction with greenhouse gas emissions. The structural equation model implied that warming, greenhouse gas emission, and humification of DOM had positive effects on Hg methylation potential, while microbial-derived DOM showed negative effects on MeHg. Background: The effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir has mainly been shown in non-hospitalized patients with mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The real-world effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir urgently needs to be determined using representative in-hospital patients with COVID-19 during the Omicron wave of the pandemic., Methods: We performed a multicentre, retrospective study in five Chinese PLA General Hospital medical centers in Beijing, China. Patients hospitalized with COVID-19 from 10 December 2022 to 20 February 2023 were eligible for inclusion. A 1:1 propensity score matching was performed between the nirmatrelvir-ritonavir group and the control group., Results: 1010 recipients of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and 1010 matched controls were finally analyzed after matching. Compared with matched controls, the nirmatrelvir-ritonavir group had a lower incidence rate of all-cause death (4.6/1000 vs. 6.3/1000 person-days, p  = 0.013) and a higher incidence rate of clinical improvement (47.6/1000 vs. 45.8/1000 person-days, p  = 0.012). Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir was associated with a 22% lower all-cause mortality and a 14% higher incidence of clinical improvement. Initiation of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir within 5 days after symptom onset was associated with a 50% lower mortality and a 26% higher clinical improvement rate. By contrast, no significant associations were identified among patients receiving nirmatrelvir-ritonavir treatment more than 5 days after symptom onset. Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir was also associated with a 50% increase in survival days and a 12% decrease in days to clinical improvement., Conclusion: Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19 during the Omicron wave in Beijing, China, the early initiation of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir was associated with clinical benefits of lowering mortality and improving clinical recovery.

Objectives: To investigate the associations of obesity with growth and puberty in children. Methods: From November 2017 to December 2019, height, weight, and Tanner stages of 26,879 children aged 3-18 years in Fuzhou, China were assessed. Results: The obese group was significantly taller than the non-obese group after age 4 years for both genders, yet there was no significant difference in height between obese and non-obese group after 15.5 years old for boys and 12.5 years old for girls. The inflection points of significant growth deceleration in obese and non-obese groups were 14.4 and 14.6 years old for boys, and 11.8 and 12.8 years old for girls, respectively. The proportions of testicular development in boys with obesity and non-obesity were 7.96% and 5.08% at 8.5-8.9 years old, respectively, while the proportions of breast development in girls were 17.19% and 3.22% at age 7.5-7.9 years old, respectively. Conclusion: Children with obesity were taller in early childhood, earlier onset of puberty and earlier cessation of growth than children with non-obesity of the same age. This study was to explore the trends of mortality rates for mental disorders by gender in urban and rural areas in China (2006-2020) and estimate the independent effects of age, period, and cohort on the mortality of mental disorders. This study employs data from the China Health Statistical Yearbook. The data were analysed using joinpoint regression analysis as well as age-period-cohort analysis. Results revealed the age-standardized mortality rates of mental disorders in China showed a downward trend, and women had a faster rate of decline than men over the years 2006-2020. Age, period, and birth cohort effects were statistically significant in the trend analysis of mental disorder mortality, and compared with period and cohort effects, age effects were the leading correlate of mental disorder mortality. The risk of death increased with advancing age. Our findings suggest that the mortality of mental disorders showed a downward trend, but some effective measures, especially regarding mental disorders, need to be taken to protect people with these disorders and prevent their occurrence in the setting of an ageing population., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest None., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Rain and heat conditions are abundant in tropical areas, and rubber and tea are widely planted in this region; the nitrification process produces nitrate content, which is not conducive to the maintenance of nitrogen nutrients, and has negative environmental effects (nitrogen oxide emissions). The characteristics of soil nitrification rate and nitrogen oxide emission under different land use patterns remain unclear. An incubation experiment was conducted under the 5 a (T5) and 15 a (T15) tea plantation soils and the nearby typical rubber plantation (XJ) soils in Baisha county of Hainan province under two moisture contents (50% WFPS-L and 80% WFPS-H) for 71 d at 25℃. The results showed that:① after the rubber plantation was converted to a tea plantation, the net nitrification and soil NO and N 2 O emissions were significantly reduced under high moisture content. The overall trend was in the order of XJH>T15H>T5H, and the values of soil net nitrification and NO and N 2 O emissions were as high as 4.2 mg·(kg·d) -1 , 1.4 mg·kg -1 , and 14.3 mg·kg -1 in the XJH treatment, respectively. Under the low moisture content, soil NO emissions in tea field soil were significantly reduced relative to those in rubber plantation soil, N 2 O emissions had no significant difference among different treatments, and net nitrification had no significant difference between the XJ and T15 treatments. There was a significant positive correlation between NO emissions and net nitrification rate ( P <0.01). ② The net nitrification of XJH was higher than that of XJL, but the net nitrification values under different moisture contents in tea field soil was in contrast to that in rubber plantation soil. The NO emissions of XJ and T15 under different moisture contents were consistent with the trend of net nitrification, and the high nitrification promoted NO emissions, whereas NO emissions of T5 were not significantly affected by moisture content. The high moisture content treatment significantly promoted N 2 O emissions relative to those under the low moisture content treatment. The results showed that SOM, TN, pH, and moisture content were the key factors affecting soil net nitrification rate, NO, and N 2 O emissions. The conversion of the rubber plantation to a tea plantation significantly reduced the net nitrification rate and negative impact on the environment under high moisture content.

(1) Background: We aimed to analyze rheumatic heart disease (RHD) mortality trends in China's urban and rural areas and to determine the roles of age, period, and cohort effects. (2) Methods: Based on mortality data extracted from the China Health Statistics Yearbook, we calculated the crude mortality rate of RHD. Age-adjusted rates were computed by the direct method using the 2020 census as the standard population. The annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC) were determined by the JoinPoint regression model. The age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the effects of age, period, and cohort. (3) Results: From 2006 to 2020, the general trend in RHD standardized mortality declined. The RHD mortality rate was higher in rural than in urban areas and among females than males. The elderly (over 60 years old) were at high risk for RHD deaths in China. The age effect increased with age, and the cohort effect showed a declining trend as chronology grew, but the period effect was not significant. (4) Conclusions: China has achieved great success in RHD, but RHD mortality may increase with age. Compared with the period effect, age and cohort effects dominated the risk of RHD deaths.

Injury and poisoning, common public health problems, currently rank fifth among the causes of death in China. In this study, we aimed to analyze the trends and influencing factors of injury and poisoning mortality in urban and rural China using an age-period-cohort model. Crude mortality data for injury and poisoning by sex, age group, and region were obtained from the China Health Statistical Yearbook (2006-2020). Age-standardized mortality rates for injury and poisoning in urban and rural areas were estimated using the Seventh Census of China 2020 population. The trends of injury and poisoning mortality were assessed using Joinpoint analysis. Age-period-cohort models were used to explore the age, period, and birth cohort effects affecting mortality risk. Over a 15-year period, age-standardized mortality rates decreased from 28.81/100,000 in 2006 to 24.78/100,000 in 2020 in urban areas and from 45.49/100,000 to 44.39/100,000 in rural areas. In the male population, the annual change in mortality was -0.4% (95% CI = -1.8%, 1.0%) in urban areas and -1.0% (95% CI = -1.9%, 0.0%) in rural areas. In the female population, the annual change in mortality was -1.2% (95% CI = -2.3%, -0.1%) in urban areas compared with -1.6% (95% CI = -3.1%, -0.1%) in rural areas. The age-period-cohort model showed a significant increase in urban and rural mortality rates starting at ages 49 and 39 years. Both showed a decline followed by an increase in the period. The cohort from 1929 to 2013 showed an overall trend of increasing and then decreasing. From 2006 to 2020, the overall injury and poisoning mortality rates in China showed a decreasing trend, and the mortality rates decreased faster in women than in men and in rural areas than in urban areas. Age effects were the most important risk factors for changes in injury and poisoning mortality. The results of this study will help researchers explore the possible causes of mortality changes in urban and rural areas and provide a scientific basis for injury and poisoning prevention and control priorities and policy formulation in China.

Objectives: Bipolar II depression (BD-II) is a subtype of bipolar disorder with recurrent depressive, manic, and frequent depressive episodes as the main clinical manifestations. This study aimed to compare the cognitive function of patients with BD-II with those of healthy siblings and controls to explore the internal phenotype of BD-II in the field of cognitive function., Methods: 66 BD-II patients, 58 healthy siblings, and 55 healthy controls were assessed with the Trail Making Test (TMT), Digit Symbol Coding Test (DSCT), Category Fluency, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLTR), Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R), Wechsler Memory Scale 3rd ed. Spatial Span Subtest (WMS-III SS), Neuropsychological Assessment Battery Mazes (NABM), Continuous Performance Test, and Identical Pairs (CPT-IP)., Results: Patients with BD-II showed cognitive deficits in visual learning, reasoning and problem solving, verbal learning, attention/vigilance, working memory, and speed of processing. Healthy siblings showed cognitive deficits in reasoning and problem solving, verbal learning, attention/vigilance, working memory, and speed of processing. Substantial differences were observed among the three groups in reasoning and problem solving., Conclusions: Verbal learning, working memory, and attention/vigilance may be potential endophenotypes that can be used to identify BD-II among Han Chinese in the early stage., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s).
