Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) has been demonstrated to be efficacious and safe in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet the optimal current intensity for pain control in KOA remains unspecified. The present meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of high-intensity and low-intensity EA in terms of pain relief and functional improvement in KOA. Methods: A thorough and comprehensive literature search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), all looking at the intensity of EA for KOA, was carried out in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science Journal Citation Report (VIP) and Wanfang database, as well as ClinicalTrials.gov. All databases were searched from their inception until April 2022. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias (RoB)2 tool. Finally, a meta-analysis of all eligible RCTs was performed using Review Manager 5.3. Results: Three studies with 472 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. The pain intensity reductions were significantly different between the high-intensity EA group and low-intensity EA group (mean difference (MD) = −0.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) = −0.26 to −0.18, p < 0.00001). There was no significant difference between the two groups in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores (MD = −3.62, 95% CI = −12.22 to 4.98, p = 0.41). High-intensity EA significantly improved emotional scale (ES) scores compared to low-intensity EA (MD = −0.72, 95% CI = −0.76 to −0.67, p < 0.00001). Conclusion: The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that high-intensity EA provides superior pain relief and has a bigger impact on emotional scale scores in patients with KOA. Background and purpose: The need for dose adjustment of caspofungin in patients with hepatic impairment is controversial, especially for those with Child–Pugh B or C cirrhosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of standard-dose caspofungin administration in Child–Pugh B and C cirrhotic patients in a real-world clinical setting. Patients and methods: The electronic medical records of 258 cirrhotic patients, including 67 Child–Pugh B patients and 191 Child–Pugh C patients, who were treated with standard-dose of caspofungin at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, China, from March 2018 to June 2023 were reviewed retrospectively. The white blood cells (WBC), hepatic, renal and coagulation function results before administration and post administration on days 7, 14 and 21 were collected, and the efficacy was assessed in all patients at the end of caspofungin therapy. Results: Favorable responses were achieved in 137 (53.1%) patients while 34 (13.2%) patients died. We observed that some patients experienced an increase of prothrombin time (PT) or international normalized ratio (INR), or a decrease of WBC, but no exacerbation of hepatic or renal dysfunction were identified and no patient required dose interruption or adjustment because of an adverse drug reaction during treatment with caspofungin. Conclusions: Standard-dose of caspofungin can be safely and effectively used in patients with Child–Pugh B or C cirrhosis, and we appealed to re-assess the most suitable dosing regimen in this population to avoid a potential subtherapeutic exposure. Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes are at high risk for developing multiple chronic complications. However, there is a lack of studies of the cumulative number of diabetic complications in China. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed from 2009 to 2021. Type 2 diabetes patients who were first diagnosed after the age of 35 years between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2017, were included. Five states were defined according to the number of chronic complications: no (S0), one (S1), two (S2), three (S3), and four or more complications (S4). A multi-state Markov model was constructed to estimate transition probability, transition intensity, mean sojourn time, and the possible factors for each state. Results: The study included 32653 type 2 diabetes patients (mean age, 59.59 years; 15929 (48.8%) male), and mean follow-up time of 7.75 years. In all, 4375 transitions were observed. The 12-year transition probability of from state S0 to S1 was the lowest at 16.4%, while that from S2 to S3 was the highest, at 45.6%. Higher fasting blood glucose, lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, higher total cholesterol, and an unhealthy diet were associated with higher risk of progression from S0 to S1. Being female, less than 60 years old, weekly physical activity, and vegetarian diet decreased this risk. Being female and less than 60 years old reduced the likelihood of transition from S1 to S2, whereas lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased this likelihood. Conclusions: Following the occurrence of two complications in type 2 diabetes patients, the risk for accumulating a third complication within a short time is significantly increased. It is important to take advantage of the stable window period when patients have fewer than two complications, strengthen the monitoring of blood glucose and blood lipids, and encourage patients to maintain good living habits to prevent further deterioration. Septic shock is the development of sepsis to refractory circulatory collapse and metabolic derangements, characterized by persistent hypotension and increased lactate levels. Anisodamine hydrobromide (Ani HBr) is a Chinese medicine used to improve blood flow in circulatory disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine the therapeutic efficacy of Ani HBr in the treatment of patients with septic shock. This was a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial focusing on patients with septic shock in 16 hospitals in China. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the treatment group or the control group. The primary endpoint was 28-day mortality. The secondary outcomes included 7-day mortality, hospital mortality, hospital length of stay, vasopressor-free days within 7 days, etc. These indicators were measured and collected at 0, 6h, 24h, 48h, 72h and 7d after the diagnosis. Between September 2017 and March 2021, 404 subjects were enrolled. 203 subjects received Ani HBr and 201 subjects were assigned to the control group. The treated group showed lower 28-day mortality than the control group. Stratified analysis further showed significant differences in 28-day mortality between the two groups for patients with a high level of illness severity. We also observed significant differences in 7-day mortality, hospital mortality and some other clinical indicators between the two groups. Ani HBr might be an important adjuvant to conventional treatment to reduce 28-day mortality in patients with septic shock. Aiming at the problems of excessive heat and humidity in the underground workshop of hydropower stations and the single operating state of dehumidifiers, this paper takes a hydropower station in central China as an example, and designs a set of damp and heat environment optimization system based on the RS-485 protocol and fuzzy intelligent control method for sub-regional dehumidification. It introduces the structure and function of the humid and hot environment optimization system in detail and proposes a fuzzy intelligent control method for the sub-zonedehumidifier that considers the relative humidity error and the relative humidity error rate of change. The system can meet the requirements of the production and operation of hydropower stations, and it is conducive to improving the damp and heat environment of the hydropower plants and the level of intelligent operation of hydropower stations. Embedding thread lift rhytidectomy, also known as "thread lifting" in China, with the natures of simple operation, less trauma and quick recovery, is progressively used in clinical practice as a new technology of face lifting. Herewith, a brief introduction of the previous advances of thread lifting techniques and materials in the facial beauty industry, combined with the discussion on various types of sutures, common complications, and the site of actions were provided. The main limitations of present thread lifting material include: (1) the use of non-absorbable sutures is liable to cause allergies and a series of complications; (2) the absorbable sutures are easily degradation, and people need to reshape in a relatively short period. Therefore, the high biocompatible spider silk was proposed as a novel material of thread lifting suture and related devices, the advantages and preliminary achievements on spider silk were also addressed. Introduction: The present study was designed and conducted to compare the efficacy between nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP), nasal intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV), and noninvasive high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (NHFOV) as the primary noninvasive ventilation in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).Material and Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed using data from four tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in China between 2016 and 2018. 512 preterm infants with RDS who received early non-invasive ventilation (NIV) were analyzed. Propensity score analysis with 1 : 1 matching was performed with the nearest neighbor matching method using calipers of width equal to 0.1 of the standard deviation of the logit of the propensity score. The primary outcome was the need for intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) within the first 7 days after birth. Secondary outcomes were days of hospitalization, predischarge mortality, rate of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) > stage II, rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) at 36 weeks post-menstrual age, rate of air leaks, rate of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) ≥ grade 3, and rate of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) ≥ stage II.Results: Propensity score matching identified 126 infants in each cohort (NHFOV vs. NIPPV), 96 infants in each cohort (NHFOV vs. NCPAP), 134 infants in each cohort (NIPPV vs. NCPAP) respectively. The need for IMV was significantly lower in the NHFOV as compared with NCPAP and NIPPV groups respectively (13/126 vs. 27/126, p = 0.016; 9/96 vs. 20/96, p = 0.027), while no difference was observed between NIPPV and NCPAP groups (25/134 vs. 25/134, p = 0.805). However, the number of days of hospitalization in NIPPV was significantly lower than that of the NCPAP group (24.8 ±14.6 days vs. 33.2 ±20.2 days p = 0.002). In subgroup analyses, the need for IMV was significantly lower in the NHFOV group than in the NCPAP and NIPPV group (7 : 79 vs. 15 : 74; 95% CI: 1.00-6.836; p = 0.044 and 11 : 102 vs. 22 : 98; 95% CI: 1.092-5.251; p = 0.026), and there was no difference between NIPPV and NCPAP in the preterm infants at ≤ 32 weeks' gestational age. There were no significant differences among three groups (p > 0.05 respectively) regarding secondary outcomes.Conclusions: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, NHFOV significantly reduced the need for IMV within the first 7 days as compared to NCPAP and NIPPV in the treatment of preterm infants with RDS without increasing the incidence of adverse events. Background: A diagnosis of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is common among newborns in China. Some latepreterm and full-term (LP/FT) infants with respiratory distress (RD) symptoms but not primary surfactant deficiency are also diagnosed with RDS and given exogenous surfactant replacement therapy (SRT). Objectives: An increasing number of neonatologists have proposed that RD etiologies should be specifically classified to guide clinical treatment. Methods: The therapeutic effects of SRT on infants of different gestational ages (GAs) were compared in a large retrospective multicenter cohort study performed at 26 Neonatal Intensive Care units in China. The cause of RD at different GAs was further analyzed by comparing the different risk factors closely related to RDS severity at different GAs. Results: Analysis of 1240 infants diagnosed with RDS showed that SRT was less effective in LP/FT infants than in early-preterm (EP) infants. GA< 30 weeksandnoprenatal corticosteroid use were closely related toRDSseverity in EP infants, whereas perinatal infectionand perinatal hypoxia-associated risk factors and a high cesarean rate were closely related to RDS severity in LP/FT infants. Conclusions: The causes of RD might differ between LP/FT and EP infants, and the diagnosis of RDS might be overused in LP/FT infants. RD in LP/FT infants is more likely related to perinatal infection, perinatal hypoxia, elective cesarean and hereditary factors, which are important causes of neonatal pulmonary edema. Recycling resources from wastewater is even more important for developing a more sustainable society. Disposing sewage sludge, which accumulates most pollutants and resources in sewage, is the main challenge in wastewater pollution control and resource utilization. Heavy metals (HMs) are the greatest constraint limiting the application of sewage sludge to land as a sustainable use of this material. We conducted a meta-analysis of the concentrations of HMs in Chinese sewage sludge by combining data from studies published from 2000 to 2019 (N = 8477). Over this period, the reported concentrations of HMs in sewage sludge declined in three stages (a fluctuating stage, a slight decrease stage, and a rapid and stable decrease stage). The results revealed that economic development and environmental policy implementation were the main factors mitigating HM pollution in sewage sludge in China. Moreover, if environmental regulations were strengthened and HM pollution-mitigation strategies were made consistent, such that the proportion of sewage sludge applied to land in China could be increased from 18.6% to 48.0% (the proportion applied to land in the United States), the ecosystem services analysis showed that huge ecological–economic benefits could be realized (3.1 billion Chinese Yuan) and the use of fertilizers could be substantially reduced (the use of nitrogen fertilizers by 8.5% and the use of phosphate fertilizers by 18.1%). This review shows that China should formulate a unified policy and interdepartmental committee for sustainable application of sewage sludge to land and wastewater resource recycling management. Objective: The extent of research on maternal exercise during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth (PTB) have grown substantially, but conclusions still remained controversial. Thus, this study aims to examine the relationship of maternal exercise during pregnancy and PTB and explore whether placenta mediates their relationship.Study Design: We investigated 849 pregnant women delivering PTB newborns (cases) and 1306 delivering full-term appropriate for gestational age newborns (controls) in this case-control study. Information concerning maternal exercise during pregnancy, sociodemographics and obstetric characteristics were collected at Women and Children's Hospitals of Shenzhen and Foshan in Guangdong, China. A series of logistic and linear regressions were used to examine the relationships of maternal exercise during pregnancy, placenta, and PTB.Results: After adjusting for the potential confounders, maternal exercise frequency and duration during pregnancy were negatively associated with PTB. Moreover, compared with mother taking no exercise during pregnancy, those taking exercise lowered the risk of PTB except those taking low/medium frequency and short duration exercise, and their adjusted ORs ranged from 0.43 to 0.65. Furthermore, mediation analysis illustrated that placental weight partially mediated 65.20% of the effects of maternal exercise frequency on PTB, as well as 41.98% of the association between maternal exercise duration and PTB.Conclusions: Maternal exercise during pregnancy is beneficial for lowering the risk of PTB, especially when taking appropriate and enough exercise. The naked carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii), a native teleost, plays an important role in maintenance of the ecological balance in the system of Lake Qinghai (altitude, 3.2 km) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Calcineurin (CN) is the only member of the serine/threonine phosphatase family that can be activated by both Ca2+ and calmodulin (CaM) and involved in many important physiological processes such as salt tolerance/adaption. In this report, cDNAs of CN catalytic subunit paralogue isoforms: GpCAa (GenBank accession no.JQ407043), GpCA? (GenBank accession no. JQ407043), and CN regulatory subunit (GpCB) (GenBank accession no. JQ410473), were isolated from Gymnocypris przewalskii and their expression patterns in embryos developmentwere characterized. Gene expression profile demonstrated that GpCA and GpCB mRNA was distributed ubiquitously in all embryonic stages and showed decline until final stage of development. Immunohistologicalanalysis revealed CN localization in different tissues including kidney, heart, brain, spermary, and gill. Collectively, these results provide molecular basis and clues to further understand the role of CN during embryos development and its function in tissues for the adaptation mechanism of naked carp. Members of the family Anelloviridae are emerging circular DNA viruses infecting many species of vertebrates including pigs. To date, members of two distinct genera, Iotatorquevirus, including torque teno sus virus 1a and torque teno sus virus 1b (TTSuV1a and TTSuV1b), and Kappatorquevirus, including torque teno sus virus k2a and torque teno sus virus k2b (TTSuVk2a and TTSuVk2b), have been identified in domestic pigs and wild boars. The goal of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and genetic diversity of these viruses based on 5' non-coding genes in Chinese swine herds experiencing clinical symptoms. One hundred eighty-five clinical samples from 11 different regions, collected during 2008-2009, were analyzed using a PCR method, and the results revealed a high TTSuV-positive rate of 78.9 % (146/185) in pigs. Moreover, we detected co-infection with multiple TTSuV strains in the same pig. Nucleotide sequencing results revealed greater genetic diversity within the genus Kappatorquevirus than within the genus Iotatorquevirus. In addition, TTSuVk2b, a novel virus discovered in New Zealand in 2012, was also identified in this study. Abstract: The butterfly fauna of west parts of the Central Chinese Qinling Mountains was studied in the Xiaolongshan Forests (which are situated in Gansu Province) and the impact of forest management characterised. Field assessment is based on transects, supplemented by field investigations, and yielded 218 butterfly species. 95 of these species (=44%) belong to the Palaearctic Region, 46 (=21%) to the Oriental Region, and 77 (=35%) are widespread. Five different forest management regimes have been studied, from close-to-nature forests to mixed forest to shrub. The number of species differed from 86 to 15 species, which gives a first indication of the impacts of forestry, but also for the opportunities these regimes might provide for the conservation of butterflies as core elements of biodiversity. This paper investigates the correlation between mutual funds׳ scale and return in China by text mining on the sheer volume of online financial reports. We crawl the webpages of all Chinese open-end mutual funds from a well-known financial website, which are then parsed to obtain time-series data of fund scales and returns. We argue that with long-tail distribution of fund scales, to examine the correlation directly in an individual level is not appropriate; rather, we should consider it in a group level by scales and take different market conditions into consideration. To illustrate this, we start with a data-fitting test to demonstrate that the tail of fund scale fits best in a distribution between Power-Law and Log-Normal. Hence, to categorize mutual funds by equal scale could lead to fund groups in substantially different sizes, and the subsequent results are thus prone to bias. We therefore introduce K -means clustering for fund categorization, which enables reliable examination of correlations between fund scale and return. Empirical study unveils some interesting findings on the scale effect of funds under different market conditions. These findings highlight the uniqueness of emerging markets while providing interesting guidelines for exploiting big data analytics for financial studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Few studies have investigated the association between puerperal women's living situation and postpartum depression. The aim of this study was to examine the association between living with parents or with parents-in-law and postpartum depression among Chinese puerperal women.Methods: A total of 1126 participants who completed questionnaire were included in our analysis. Postpartum depression status was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between living with puerperal women's parents or with parents-in-law and risk of postpartum depression after adjustment for potential confounders.Results: The prevalence of postpartum depression among participants was 11.8%. Of the 1126 participants, 524 (46.5%) lived only with their husbands, 387 (34.4%) lived with their parents-in-law, and 215 (19.1%) lived with their parents. Compared with those living only with their husbands, puerperal women living with their parents-in-law had higher risk of postpartum depression after adjustment for potential confounders (OR=2.48; 95% CI: 1.20, 5.15). No association between living with puerperal women's parents and postpartum depression was found after adjustment for confounders (OR=1.05; 95%CI: 0.42, 2.65).Limitations: Although we adjusted for a wide range of potential confounders, we cannot rule out the possibility of residual confounding by other unmeasured factors, such as breastfeeding, intimate partner violence, and marital relationship.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that living with parents-in-law may be a risk factor for postpartum depression among Chinese puerperal women. Background: The CYP2C19 gene is highly polymorphic, and CYP2C19 is involved in the broad interindividual variability of the clinical efficacy of certain clinical medications, such as clopidogrel. However, data on the CYP2C19 genotype in the Chinese population of the Foshan area of Guangdong Province are scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms in patients in the Foshan area and to compare the CYP2C19 genotype frequencies in different populations to determine the allele distribution pattern to identify the most appropriate prescription., Methods: The CYP2C19 gene was detected in 1231 patients on a gene chip platform, and the genotype frequencies of CYP2C19 in Foshan populations from different populations were compared., Results: The frequencies of CYP2C19*1 , *2 and *3 in the Foshan population were 63.89%, 30.46% and 5.65%, respectively. For the three metabolic types, the frequency associated with the rapid metabolism type ( *1/*1 ) was 41.51 [95% confidence interval (CI) 40.11 to 42.91%]; that for the intermediate metabolism type ( *1/*2, *1/*3 ) was 44.76% (95% CI 43.34 to 46.18) and that for the slow metabolism type (*2/*2, *2/*3, *3/*3 ) was 13.73% (95% CI 12.75 to 14.71%). In the Foshan population, the frequencies of the CYP2C19 *2 and *3 alleles were similar to those previously reported for Chinese and other Asian populations., Conclusion: Our study is a report on the genetic basis of CYP2C19 polymorphism in the Foshan population. Our results will potentially contribute to the improvement of pharmacotherapy effectiveness by providing personalized medicine for the Foshan population.

Purpose: Alström Syndrome (AS) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease with the characteristics of multiorgan dysfunction. Due to the heterogeneity of clinical manifestations of AS, genetic testing is crucial for the diagnosis of AS. Herein, we used whole-exome sequencing (WES) to determine the genetic causes and characterize the clinical features of three affected patients in two Chinese families with Alström Syndrome., Materials and Methods: Three affected patients (initially diagnosed as achromatopsia). and five asymptomatic members were recruited for both genetic and clinical tests. The complete ophthalmic examinations and systemic examinations were performed on all participants. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed for mutation detection. The silico analysis was also applied to predict the pathogenesis of identified pathogenic variants., Results: In family 1, the proband showed low vision, hyperopia, photophobia, nystagmus, and total color blindness. DNA analysis revealed that she carried a compound heterozygote with two novel pathogenic variants in the ALMS1 gene NM&#95;015120.4:c.10379del (NP&#95;055935.4:p.(Asp2252Tyr)) and NM&#95;015120.4:c.11641&#95;11642del (NP&#95;055935.4:p.(Val3881ThrfsTer11)). Further systemic examinations showed short stature, acanthosis nigricans, and sensorineural hearing loss. In family 2, two affected siblings presented the low vision, hyperopia, photophobia, nystagmus, and total color blindness. DNA analysis revealed that they carried a same compound heterozygote with two novel pathogenic variants in the ALMS1 gene NM&#95;015120.4:c.10379del (NP&#95;055935.4:p.(Asn3460IlefsTer49)), NM&#95;015120.4:c.10819C > T (NP&#95;055935.4:p.(Arg3607Trp)). Further systemic examinations showed obesity and mild abnormalities of lipid metabolism. According to the genetic testing results and further systemic analysis, the three affected patients were finally diagnosed as Alström Syndrome (AS)., Conclusions: We found two new compound heterozygous pathogenic variants of the ALMS1 gene and determined the diagnosis as Alström Syndrome in three patients of two Chinese families. Our study extends the genotypic and phenotypic spectrums for ALMS1 -AS and emphasizes the importance of gene testing in assisting the clinical diagnosis for cases with phenotypic diversities, which would help the AS patients with early diagnosis and treatment to reduce future systemic damage., (© 2022. Xiaolong Mountain, located in warm temperate subtropical transition zone, is one of the important biodiversity conservation areas in China. We analyzed species composition, community structure, and habitat preferences of all woody plant species with DBH (diameter at breast height)≥1 cm in a 6 hm 2 plot in Xiaolong Mountain, Gansu Province, Northwest China. A total of 29251 individuals (41735 stems) belonging to 33 families, 65 genera, and 124 species were recorded. The 28 species with importance value ≥1 contributed 82.9% to the total abundance. The top four species with the highest importance value were Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata , Betula platyphylla , Lindera aggregata var. playfairii and Corylus heterophylla . The structure of DBH size class of all stems showed an inverse 'J' type, indicating a successful regeneration tendency in the understory. Results from the indicator species analysis showed that 11 species had significant habitat prefe-rences, an two species ( Ostrya japonica and Acer stachyophyllum subsp. betulifolium ) had the most obvious preferences. Results from the redundancy analysis and partial methods showed that topographic factors played a dominant role in determining species distribution.

Purpose: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection plays an important role in the development of cervical cancer, but the prevalence of HPV infection in women of Shenzhen city remains unclear. The present study was performed to describe the change of cervical HPV infection in females who participated in voluntary cervical cancer screening from 2006 to 2010 in Shenzhen city, China., Methods: A total of 4, 413 women were recruited. HPV infections were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reversed dot blot hybridization in Shenzhen Maternity and Child Health Hospital., Results: The prevalence of HPV infection was 13.8%. The five most commonly found HPV types were HPV16 (3.47%), HPV58 (1.68%), HPV33 (1.38%), HPV43 (1.36%) and HPV18 (1.27%). The secular trends of major HPV type-specific were diverse. Among of them, the prevalence of HPV18 increased sharply while others increased slowly or even decreased in the period. The change of total HPV, single HPV and multiple HPV infection were similar during the five years., Conclusions: Our findings suggested that HPV infection is common with HPV16 and HPV 58 as the primary subtypes in women in Shenzhen city. The prevalence of HPV 18 infection is increasing faster than any others, which will lead it to be one of the main subtypes in this city in the future.

Background: The clinical characteristics and outcomes of hoarseness subsequent to cardiovascular surgery, intervention, maneuver and endotracheal intubation have not been systematically elucidated., Methods: The literature of hoarseness following cardiovascular surgery, intervention, and maneuver and intubation published between 1980 and 2011 was comprehensively retrieved in the MEDLINE database and the Google and Highwire Press search engines., Results: The so-called "iatrogenic Ortner's (cardiovocal) syndrome" developed 0-7 (2.33 ± ± 2.66) days following cardiovascular surgery, intervention, maneuver and endotracheal intubation with an incidence of 10.15%. The most common symptoms associated with hoarseness were stridor (49.45%) and aspiration (15.38%). Patent ductus arteriosus ligation and otherwise congenital heart disease repair were the two main causes leading to such a complication. Patients' hoarse voice spontaneously resolved in 70.52%, and persisted in 33.61% of the patients. Treatment of the hoarseness included gelfoam/teflon injection, intravenous steroid therapy, type 1 thyroplasty and arytenoid adduction. Hoarseness recovered in 46.67%, improved in 13.33%, and persisted in 40%., Conclusions: The recurrent laryngeal nerve was often injured following cardiovascular surgery, intervention, maneuver and endotracheal intubation. Care must be taken during the manipulations in order to avoid the nerve injury. The so-called "iatrogenic Ortner's (cardiovocal) syndrome" was a wrong concept as it did not meet the satisfaction of a main element "cardiovascular disease as an underlying cause of hoarseness" of the definition of Ortner's (cardiovocal) syndrome defined by Ortner in 1897. It was actually an immediate vocal cord complication following cardiovascular manipulation.

Pigs are often co-infected by different viral strains from the same virus. Up to now, there are few reports about co-existence of different porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) strains in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate it in Chinese swine herds. 118 PCV2 positive DNAs isolated from diseased pigs identified by classic PCR were re-detected using a modified differential PCR assay. The results indicated that co-existence rates of PCV2 were 32.2% (38/118) in diseased pigs and 0% (0/41) in asymptomatic pigs. Four PCV2 complete genomes were cloned from two co-infected samples and their nucleotide (nt) identities were 95%-97.3%. The phylogenetic analysis showed that four PCV2 strains were divided into different genotypes, PCV2a, PCV2b, PCV2d and PCV2e, respectively. In addition, co-existence were not detected in 41 serum samples from healthy pigs but PCV2 single infection (31.7%, 13/41) existed. These data revealed that the co-existence of different strains of PCV2 might contribute to the development of more severe clinical symptoms for pigs. This is the first report confirming the co-existence of different PCV2 strains in Chinese swine herds. Meanwhile, this study could help us to understand new infection and prevalence forms of PCV2 clinically.

To determine whether the novel porcine parvovirus type 4 (PPV4) recently reported in America is prevalent in China, a set of specific primers was designed and used for molecular survey of PPV4 among the clinical samples collected from various provinces of China between 2006 and 2010. The results showed that PPV4 is present in Chinese swine herds at a rate of 2.09% (12/573) among the clinical samples examined and 0.76% (1/132) among the samples taken from healthy animals. We also noted that PPV4 was not detected in samples taken prior to 2009. Analysis of the coding sequences showed that the Chinese and American PPV4 genome sequences are closely related with greater than 99% nucleotide sequence identity. Similar to a previous study, viral genomes in head-to-tail configuration of various lengths of the non-coding region were detected. Our findings confirmed that PPV4 is a unique recently discovered virus in pigs. Phylogenetically, PPV4 is most closely related to bovine parvovirus 2 (BPV2, which is not a Bocavirus and is not assigned to any Parvovirinae genus) and shares limited ORF1 (33.6%) and ORF2 (24.5%) amino acid identity. With respect to genome structure and organization, PPV4 encodes an ORF3 in the middle of the viral genome that resembles the Bocavirus genus. However, the PPV4 ORF3 encoded protein shares minimal amino acid identity with the ORF3 encoded proteins of the Bocavirus genus.

Background/aims: Our assessment of the segmental anatomy of the liver will allow more systematic and limited segmentectomies, as well as a safer harvesting for liver sectors in LDLT., Methodology: We have examined 104 patients with normal intrahepatic vascular anatomy by helical CT scans and another 12 cases of cadaveric livers dissected to examine their bifurcation characteristics., Results: In 61 out of 104 (59%) cases, we have found out that the right posterior portal vein does not have obvious isolated bifurcation branches which can determine the boundary between the 6th and the 7th graft. In 8 out of 12 (66.6%) cadaveric livers cases, the RPV runs through the right posterior segment without any other large branches while the rest of them form an actinomorphic bifurcation., Conclusion: Because of the major discrepancies that occurred in determining the boundary between the 6th and 7th segment, we propose a creative assessment of the segment of the right hemiliver and consider the right posterior graft as a unique segment.

The contribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), including loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), to the aggregation of both aerobic and anaerobic sludge is explored using the extended DLVO theory. It is observed that the aggregation abilities of both sludge samples decrease with the extraction of LB-EPS and TB-EPS, implying the crucial roles of EPS in sludge aggregation. Furthermore, through analyzing the interaction energy curves of sludge before and after the EPS extraction using the extended DLVO theory, it is found that both LB-EPS and TB-EPS have a substantial contribution to the sludge aggregation. The interaction energy of LB-EPS is always negative, suggesting that the LB-EPS always display a positive effect on the sludge aggregation. On the other hand, the interaction energy of TB-EPS is not always negative, depending on the separation distance between sludge cells. These results imply that the LB-EPS and TB-EPS have different contributions to the sludge aggregation.

The simulated dive experiments were conducted at the high altitude of 4500 meters and 5000 meters, for the requirement of diving operation in the lakes at the altitude of 4442 meters for the construction of large-scale hydroelectric power station. The high & low pressure chamber-complex was used, and 15 professional divers participated in the experiment. The divers were stayed at the altitude of 4500 and 5000 meters for 7-9 days. Totally 85 persons-times of dives to the depths of 30-50 meters were operated; they stayed under the water for 30-90 minutes while processing physical activities. During the experiment, we studied the pressurization procedure, decompression table, and physiological functions of the divers. The results indicate that, although the relative pressure differences between the surface and underwater was larger at high altitude than at sea level, the appropriate prolongation of the compression time was able to prevent the difficulty in pressure regulation for the divers to avoid the injury of middle ear. Four tables of the decompression A, B, C and D was calculated with Haldane's theory, and the speed of decompression increased in the order from A to D. The safest procedure was C, and there was no decompression sickness and bubbles in body of the divers. The methods of decompression included underwater stage decompression, surface decompression, oxygen-breathing decompression, and repetitive diving decompression. The surface decompression was the most suitable method for the high altitude, as it could greatly decrease the time in the cold water for the divers. The power spectrum analysis of EEG (electroencephalogram) indicated that, when the divers were exposed to the altitude of 5000 meters, the delta activity in EEG increased, alpha and beta activity decreased. And the delta activity decreased, the alpha and beta activity increased while diving during a dry condition. According to the diving and decompression procedure studied under simulated conditions, 272 person-times of diving training and underwater operations were processed in a high altitude hydroelectric power station at the altitude of 4442 meters, including photographing, video-recording, measuring, and drilling. There were no signs and symptoms of decompression sickness and bubbles.
