In massive open online courses (MOOCs), recommendation relationships present a collection of associations that imply a new form of integration, such as an interdisciplinary synergy among diverse disciplines. This study took a computer science approach, using the susceptible-infected (SI) model to simulate the process of learners accessing courses within networks of MOOC offerings, and emphasized the potential effects of a network structure. The current low rate of access suggests that a ceiling effect influences learners' access to learning online, given that there are thousands of courses freely available. Interdisciplinary networks were created by adding recommended courses into four disciplinary networks. The diversity of interdisciplinarity was measured by three attributes, namely variety, balance, and disparity. The results attest to interesting changes in how the diversity of interdisciplinary knowledge grows. Particularly remarkable is the degree to which the diversity of interdisciplinarity increased when new recommended courses were first added. However, changing diversity implied that neighbouring disciplines were more likely to come to the forefront to attach to the interdisciplinarity of MOOC offerings, and that the pace of synergy among disparate disciplines slowed as time passed. In the absence of domain experts, expert knowledge is not sufficient to support interdisciplinary curriculum design. More evidence-based analytics studies showing how interdisciplinarity evolves in course offerings could help us to better design online courses that prepare learners with 21st-century skills.

This study attempted to assess public perceptions of and interest in MOOCs by examining how Weibo increases public discussion of MOOCs as well as by interpreting how individual learners talk about their learning experiences. Over 4,000 microblog posts were collected and analysed between 2013 and 2018. The findings showed that Weibo is used as a public service medium to augment the publicity of the MOOC movement and increase the accessibility of MOOC portals. The results also demonstrated that Weibo acts as a space for learners to share their personal learning experiences, which reflect aspects of autonomous, self-regulated, interactive and cooperative learning. By posting on Weibo, close peer connections and learning groups were established to encourage MOOC learning. This study's findings further the scholarly understanding of how MOOCs are discussed on social media and address an important gap around what is known in one of the largest and most under-researched sites of informal online learning.

As a fundamental subject of medical education, human anatomy plays a critical role in the development of medical science. However, because of multiple factors including cultural conservativism and limited social understanding, China is facing a particularly severe shortage of bodies donated for anatomy education. Zhengzhou University (ZZU) has continued to uphold whole-body dissection as the preferred method for medical students to learn anatomy. For this study, records of registered individuals (who have signed a body donation agreement) and donors (whose bodies have been received) from 2001 to 2020 were collected and analyzed. The aim of this study was to explore the factors influencing the body donation program (BDP) at ZZU, and then reinforce the social understanding for the BDP. The results showed a significant increase in the numbers of both registered individuals and donors since 2015, which is the year the publicity and commemoration in honor of donors were increased. There were no significant differences between the biological male and female sexes in the registered individuals, but the number of male donors (12.85 ± 10.86, per year) was significantly higher than that of female donors (4.75 ± 4.53, per year). The current donor profile at ZZU is male in his 60/70s, while the profile of registered individuals is male or female in their 60s. Strengthening the publicity and commemoration in honor of donors may contribute to the implementation of BDPs.

Open Educational Resources (OER) in higher education cannot be put into practice without considering institutional contexts, which differ not only globally but also within the same country. Each institutional context provides educators with opportunities or limitations where Open Educational Practices (OEP) and OER for teaching and learning are involved. As part of a broader research project, and as a follow-up to national perspectives, an international comparison was conducted, based on institutional cases of nine different higher education systems (Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Turkey). Aspects regarding the availability of infrastructure and institutional policies for OER, as well as the existence of measures directed at OER quality assurance and at the promotion of the development and use of OER were covered. The resulting theoretical contribution sheds light on an international comparative view of OER and points towards country-specific trends, as well as differences among institutions. These aspects could provide an impetus for the development of institutional guidelines and measures. In line with international literature on the topic, recommendations are derived to promote/enhance the use of OER in teaching and learning in higher education at the institutional level.

This paper explores faculty's perspectives and use of open educational resources (OER) and their repositories across different countries by conducting a multiple case study to find similarities and differences between academics' awareness, perceptions and use of OER, as well as examining related aspects of institutional policy and quality that may influence individual views. Data were collected through nine expert reports on each country studied (Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Spain and Turkey) and were analyzed through qualitative content analysis using thematic coding. Findings show the impact on individual OER adoption with regard to the individual control of diverse factors by faculty members; of institutional policies and quality measures on the externally determined factors (by the institution); and of institutional professional development and provision of incentives in more internally determined factors (by the faculty members themselves). These findings carry implications for higher education institutions around the world in their attempt to boost OER adoption by faculty members.

This study aims to identify the priority of the roles and competencies of tutors working in the e-learning environments where the tutors are experiencing the changes brought by reforming traditional TV and broadcasting university to open universities. The mixed methods, DACUM, non-participatory observation, and questionnaires were used to identify the priority of the roles and competencies of tutors. The findings suggested that the priority of the roles and competencies has significantly changed accompanied to the shift of pedagogy from cognitive behaviorist to social-constructivist and connectivist. Changes in the roles of the instructional designer and instructor were highlighted. Significant differences in perceptions of the importance of the roles and competencies corresponding to learning management and technology use also merit further attention.

Aims: To investigate the exposure–response (E‐R) relationship, including exposure–efficacy and exposure–safety, of ropeginterferon alfa‐2b treatment in patients with polycythaemia vera (PV). Methods: Based on the results of the phase II trial A20‐202 regarding ropeginterferon alfa‐2b in patients with PV, E‐R analyses were performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the given dosing regimen. The E‐R analyses were based on logistic and linear regression and the relationship between exposure to ropeginterferon alfa‐2b and key efficacy and safety variables. The key efficacy variables included complete haematologic response (CHR) and reduction of the driver mutation JAK2V617F. The safety variable was treatment‐related adverse events (TRAEs). Results: A clear relationship between the exposure to ropeginterferon alfa‐2b and CHR was observed, with an increase in drug exposure resulting in an increased probability of achieving CHR. Similar CHR probabilities were observed in the third and fourth quantiles of the average concentration at Week 24. The results from the exposure–JAK2V617F model indicated that the JAK2V617F allele burden decreased with increasing exposure to ropeginterferon alfa‐2b and baseline body surface area. Exposure–safety analysis revealed a risk of AEs associated with transaminase abnormalities, which were not associated with clinical significance. Conclusions: Our analyses have shown that patients with PV treated with ropeginterferon alfa‐2b had an increased probability of achieving CHR and a molecular response with acceptable safety risks at the 250–350–500 μg titration dosing regimen. This research investigated the contamination characteristics, sources, and health risks of five metals in soils from two villages named DK and SXC, downstream from a battery industry hub in Xinxiang city, Henan Province, China. The average concentrations of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn in DK were 5.93, 41.31, 71.40, 62.20, and 115.83 mg/kg, respectively, and in SXC were 2.04, 30.41, 41.22, 36.18, and 96.04 mg/kg, respectively. The single factor pollution index (Pi) revealed a consistent descending order of Cd > Cu > Zn > Ni > Pb in DK and SXC. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the Cd pollution in DK was extreme, and in SXC was at a heavy to extreme level. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated that Cd presented a significantly high ecological risk while it was low for other metals. Principal component analysis classified them into the anthropogenic origin of Cd and common mixed origin of others. The elevated levels and pollution load of heavy metals with closer proximity to the battery factory imply that the factory is a probable source of contamination. Overall, the health risks posed by heavy metals were more pronounced for local children compared to adults, with Cd being the primary contributor to both pollution and health risks. In China, microblogging is an extremely popular activity and is proving to be an effective mechanism to gauge perceptions about social phenomena. Between 2010 and 2015 Sina Weibo, China's largest microblogging website, generated 95,015 postings from 62,074 users referencing the term massive open online courses (MOOCs), a method of online course delivery popularized in North America that has spread globally. Time series analyses revealed distinct patterns in the volume of postings during a four-year period, and subsequently by month, by week, and by the time of day. The volume of postings during the week, for example, peaked on Monday and declined daily to a low point on Saturday. Relative to maximizing learner engagement, the findings may provide insight to parties who deliver MOOCs to employ or test strategies on timing (i.e., time of year to offer/not offer a MOOC, time of week to release/not release new material, time of day to schedule/not schedule chat sessions). The paper also serves to demonstrate a mechanism to retrieve big data from social media sources, otherwise underutilized in educational research.

This paper presents an analysis of the conceptualization of massive open online courses (MOOCs) by major influencers in Chinese higher education. Using critical discourse analysis, predominantly from university resources, a map of the discursive construction of MOOCs is presented and interpreted. The centralized orientation of decision making in Chinese higher education is reflected in how MOOCs have been introduced, envisioned, and utilized in China. With the increase of Chinese MOOCs, elite universities are able to capitalize on their comparative advantages, which may be counter to the true intent of MOOCs, which is to raise teaching standards across sectors. This paper serves to illuminate how MOOCs may reinforce the status of elite universities, thereby having the opposite effect to their real intention of democratizing higher education for the masses. The strategy of using MOOCs to improve teaching quality and augment the worldwide reputation of Chinese institutions is central to China's reinvigorated focus on higher education, which counters the widely held perception, and intention, that MOOCs are vehicles for widening access.

This study aims to explore the roles of multiple gust fronts (i.e., outflow boundaries) during a short-lived extreme rainfall that occurred in the Greater Bay Area of South China in the afternoon of 1 August 2021. Through the use of microbarographs and Doppler weather radars, the research highlights how the interactions of five gust fronts, approaching the region from different directions, have contributed to the high precipitation efficiency and damaging surface winds during the event. The close convergence of these gust fronts funneled unstable air masses into the region of interest, priming the mesoscale convective environment. Some isolated convection initiated before the gust fronts' arrival. Preceding the arrival of these gust fronts, subtle wave-like pressure jumps were identified from the high-frequency (1 Hz) microbarograph observations. The amplitude of the pressure jump is approximately 40 Pa with minimal changes in air temperature. During the early stage of the gust front passages, very high-frequency oscillations in surface pressure are recognized, indicating interaction between the density currents and the low-level troposphere. As suggested through numerical simulations, the subtle pressure jumps are associated with upward displacements of isentropic surfaces aloft, deepening the moist layer and enhancing the lapse rate that are conducive to convective development. The simulated vertical profiles show no evident capping inversion above the dry neutral boundary layer, suggesting that the pressure jumps are likely to be dynamically induced through the collision of the outflows and environmental air masses. Background: Thalassemia is a common genetic disorder in southwestern China, and an increasing number of cases from eastern China have been recently reported. Here, we developed a rapid, convenient, and accurate assay to evaluate the mutation spectrum of thalassemia in eastern China. Methods: A carrier screening assay for 61 hotspot variants among HBA1/HBA2 and HBB (OMIM: 141800, 141850, and 141900) genes was developed by SNaPshot/high‐throughput ligation‐dependent probe amplification (HLPA) technology. We used this assay to detect the mutation spectrum of thalassemia in individuals from eastern China and compared with the data collected from literatures focused on southern and northern China for variant distribution. Results: Among 4276 tested individuals, 2.62% (112/4276) were α‐thalassemia carriers, with 90 carrying one deletion or mutation and 22 carrying two deletions. 0.40% (17/4276) were β‐thalassemia carriers, and the most common variant of β‐thalassemia was c.126_129delCTTT (29.41%) followed by c.316‐197C>T (23.53%). The genotype distribution in our study was similar to those from southern China populations. Conclusion: The Chinese population from different regions presented comparable mutation spectrum of thalassemia, and the SNaPshot/HLPA technique may serve as a capable assay for a routine genetic test in clinical practice with its accurate, rapid, and inexpensive advantage. This paper attempts to investigate how the rapid development of China's environmental policy contributes to the changes in China's labour market. We first categorise the environmental regulations into (i) command-and-control policies, (ii) economic incentive policies, and (iii) voluntary environmental agreements (VEAs). Then, we use the provincial panel data over the 2000–2015 period to estimate the effect of alternative environmental regulations on employment in China. The results show that alternative environmental regulations have different impacts on employment. This difference even exists within the same group of environmental policies. Amongst the command-and-control policies, the three simultaneities policy leads to less employment, while the deadline governance systems increase employment. For economic incentive policies, higher environmental tax leads to lower employment, while more funding for environmental research promotes employment. The results also show that more VEAs reduced labour demand. In addition, the dynamic impact and regional heterogeneity of environmental regulations on employment are confirmed by the empirical estimation. Specifically, the economic incentive policies significantly impact employment in Central and Western China, whereas they have a non-significant impact on employment in Eastern China. Introduction: A multicenter prospective randomized controlled study was used to investigate the effect and safety of a new corneal wetting agent called the Corneal Surface Viscoelastic Protector (CsVisc, Success Bio-Tech Co., Ltd, China), on the corneal epithelium during ophthalmic surgery by comparison with the commercially available Cornea Protect (CP, Valeant Med Sp. zo. o. Leobendorf, Austria). Methods: This multicenter prospective randomized controlled study comprised patients scheduled for cataract surgery and pars plana vitrectomy. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either a new corneal wetting agent (CsVisc) or Cornea Protect (CP, Valeant Med Sp. zo. o. Leobendorf, Austria). Optical clarity during surgery, application frequency, duration of effect, diffusion time of corneal wetting agents, fluorescein staining, intraocular pressure (IOP), tear-film break-up time (TBUT), and Schirmer I test (SIT) were assessed. Adverse events were noted on the designated patient case report forms. Results: A total of 149 eyes (149 patients, mean age 62 years; range 25–80 years) were included in the study. There were 74 eyes in the control group and 75 eyes in the study group. In patients who underwent vitrectomy, the frequency of application was 1.62 ± 1.03 in the study group and 1.39 ± 0.66 in the control group, with no significant difference (P = 0.399), and the duration of effect was 19.16 ± 6.94 min in the study group and 19.06 ± 7.22 min in the control group, with no significant difference (P = 0.835). The optical clarity of the study group was not significantly different from that of the control group (P = 0.485). In patients who underwent cataract surgery, the frequency of application was 1.10 ± 0.38 in the study group and 1.07 ± 0.26 in the control group, and the difference was not significant (P = 0.950). The difference between the duration of effect in the study group (8.32 ± 2.50 min) and the control group (7.63 ± 2.52 min) was not significant (P = 0.310). The difference in optical clarity scores between the two groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.600). Among all patients in this study, the diffusion time of the corneal wetting agent was 14.97 ± 10.07 s in the control group and 11.23 ± 8.41 s in the study group, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.008). The frequency of adverse events was 20.00% (15/75) in the study group and 14.86% (11/74) in the control group, with no statistically significant difference (P = 0.409). There were no serious adverse events related to the test medical device or causing patients to withdraw from the study. Conclusions: The CsVisc is safe and effective in preventing intraoperative corneal epithelial damage due to corneal dryness and can be comparable to the CP. Context: Afforestation has been widely implemented to deliver climate change mitigation and restore ecosystem benefits. However, the efficacy of afforestation has been deputed. The regeneration ability of most plantations in Northern China has been suggested to fail to reach their optimal. Objectives: Here, we compared the regeneration ability of plantations and natural forests in Northern China and explored how the climate factors and site features can determine the regeneration ability. We hypothesize that the deficient regeneration ability of plantations is mainly due to the single tree age and high stand density. Furthermore, the effects of climate factors cannot be ignored. Methods: We investigated the climate factor, stand features, tree radial growth, and regeneration ability (the number of cones and seedlings) of two dominant conifers, Larix principis-rupprechtii and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica in natural forests and plantations in northern China. Results: Our analysis shows a significant difference in the number of both cones and regenerated seedlings produced by plantations and natural forests within the same site (P < 0.05). The stand density of plantations had a significant negative effect on the generation of seedlings (P < 0.05). Additionally, climatic factors, such as mean annual temperature and mean precipitation play a major role in regulating the heat and water availability for forest regeneration. Finally, we found that the inter-annual fluctuations in the radial growth of trees are also related to the number of seedlings produced, which is likely due to higher growth fluctuations indicating poorer drought adaptation of trees. Conclusions: Our study suggests that no single factor can explain the regeneration failure of plantations in semi-humid and semiarid regions of China. Both site features and climatic factors affect the production of seedlings. Future afforestation should follow low-density afforestation in areas with favorable climatic conditions for tree growth. Simple Summary: Tiger puffer fish (Takifugu rubripes) is an economically important marine fish, in which the development of selective breeding is limited due to the long time of sexual maturation. In order to promote the breeding research of this species, we established the spermatogenic stem cell line of the tiger puffer fish. In this study, we isolated spermatogonial stem cells from the testis of the 6-month-old tiger puffer fish and cultured them stably in vitro for more than 60 generations. The characteristics of the in vitro cultured spermatogonial stem cell line showed polygonal in shape. The germ cell marker genes dnd, ddx4, piwil, dazl, stem cell marker genes sox2, myca and nanog, and spermatogonial stem cell marker genes gfra1b and ly75 were highly expressed in this cell line. The establishment of this spermatogonial stem cell line provides a dependable material for the reproduction research of tiger puffer fish. Tiger puffer fish (Takifugu rubripes) has become the main fish species cultured in China since the last century because of its high economic value. Male and female tiger puffer fish need 2 and 3 years each to reach sexual maturity, which limits the development of breeding research for this species. In recent years, in vitro culture of fish spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) have shown potential in aquaculture. In the present study, we established a spermatogenic stem cell line from T. rubripes (TrSSCs). TrSSCs were characterized by polygonal morphology, predominantly retained 44 chromosomes, and grew rapidly at 26 °C and in L-15. TrSSCs were still able to grow stably after more than one year of in vitro culture. TrSSCs showed positive alkaline phosphatase staining. TrSSCs expressed germ cell-associated genes, including dnd, ddx4, piwil, gfra1b, sox2, myca, nanog, ly75, and dazl, as determined by semiquantitative assays, and almost all cells were found to express the germ cell genes ddx4 and gfra1b in a fluorescence in situ hybridization assay. In vitro, induction experiments demonstrated the TrSSCs possessed the ability to differentiate into other types of cells. Our research has enriched the fish spermatogonial stem cell resource bank, which will provide an efficient research model for sex determination and sex control breeding in fish, establishing a foundation for subsequent breeding research. Aim: To determine the associated factors of professional identity among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic in China. Design: Multicentre cross‐sectional study. Methods: This study invited 348 ICU nurses in five hospitals in China from May to July 2020. Online self‐report questionnaires were adopted to collect their demographic and occupational characteristics, perceived professional benefits and professional identity. Based on univariate and multiple linear regression analysis, a path analysis was performed to determine the associated factors' effects on professional identity. Results: The mean score of professional identity was 102.38 ± 16.46. Perceived professional benefits, doctor recognition level and family support level were associated with ICU nurses' professional identity. The path analysis revealed that perceived professional benefits and doctor recognition level had direct effects on professional identity. In addition, doctor recognition level and family support level had indirect effects on professional identity through the mediation of perceived professional benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Climate and land use changes are two major pervasive and growing global causes of rapid changes in the distribution patterns of biodiversity, challenging the future effectiveness of protected areas (PAs), which were mainly designed based on a static view of biodiversity. Therefore, evaluating the effectiveness of protected areas for protecting the species threatened by climate and land use change is critical for future biodiversity conservation. Location: China. Methods: Here, using distributions of 200 Chinese Theaceae species and ensemble species distribution models, we identified species threatened by future climate and land use change (i.e. species with predicted loss of suitable habitat ≥30%) under scenarios incorporating climate change, land use change and dispersal. We then estimate the richness distribution patterns of threatened species and identify priority conservation areas and conservation gaps of the current PA network. Results: Our results suggest that 36.30%–51.85% of Theaceae species will be threatened by future climate and land use conditions and that although the threatened species are mainly distributed at low latitudes in China under both current and future periods, the mean richness of the threatened species per grid cell will decline by 0.826–3.188 species by the 2070s. Moreover, we found that these priority conservation areas are highly fragmented and that the current PA network only covers 14.21%–20.87% of the 'areas worth exploring' and 6.91%–7.91% of the 'areas worth attention'. Main Conclusions: Our findings highlight the necessity of establishing new protected areas and ecological corridors in priority conservation areas to protect the threatened species. Moreover, our findings also highlight the importance of taking into consideration the potential threatened species under future climate and land use conditions when designating priority areas for biodiversity conservation. This study attempts to make inferences about the mechanisms that drive network change over time. It adopts simulation investigation for empirical network analysis to examine the patterns and evolution of relationships formed in the context of a massive open online course (MOOC) discussion forum. Four network effects--"homophily," "reciprocity," "transitivity," and "preferential" attachment--were tested to explain the dynamic mechanisms of interaction in the MOOC forum. Understanding the network dynamics of relationships will allow us to explore how to develop a robust peer-supported learning environment and in turn improve the online learning experience in MOOCs.

Daytime napping, a habit widely adopted globally, has an unclear association with obesity. In this study, we executed a meta-analysis to explore the relationship between daytime napping and obesity. We conducted a comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases for pertinent articles published up to April 2023. Random-effects models were utilized to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and we assessed the heterogeneity of the included studies using the I2 statistic. To explore potential sources of heterogeneity, subgroup analyses were performed. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS), and funnel plots were employed to detect any publication bias. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by sequentially omitting each study. We conducted a meta-analysis of twelve studies that included one each from the UK and Spain, five from the USA, and five from China, totalling 170,134 participants, to probe the association between napping and obesity. The pooled analysis suggested a higher risk of obesity in individuals who nap (OR: 1.22 [1.10–1.35], p < 0.001, I2 = 87%) compared to non-nappers. The meta-analysis results revealed variations in the summary ORs for studies conducted in China, Spain, the USA, and the UK. The ORs for China, Spain, the USA, and the UK were 1.05 (95% CI 0.90–1.23), 9.36 (95% CI 4.74–18.45), 1.27 (95% CI 1.10–1.47), and 1.39 (95% CI 1.32–1.47), respectively. A subgroup analysis based on age within the American population disclosed that napping in both adults and children heightened obesity incidence. A subgroup analysis based on nap duration found a significant rise in obesity occurrence when nap duration exceeded one hour, but no clear relationship emerged when nap duration was less than 1 h. In a subgroup analysis based on the definition of obesity, napping did not demonstrate a significant relationship with obesity when diagnostic criteria set obesity at a BMI of 25 or above. However, when the criteria were set at a BMI of 28 or 30 or more, napping significantly increased obesity risk. Our meta-analysis indicates a positive association between daytime napping and the risk of obesity. However, given the limited number of included studies, potential confounding factors might not have been fully addressed. Future well-designed prospective studies are required to further investigate this relationship. Background: Anxiety may stay with nursing students throughout their internship and even persist afterwards. Although many studies have explored the effects of perceived stress on anxiety, the relationship between pre-internship perceived stress and post-internship anxiety levels has not been clarified. In addition, none had focused on the moderating roles of career adaptability and professional commitment between perceived stress and anxiety. This study aims to investigate the influence of pre-internship perceived stress on the post-internship anxiety level of nursing college students, and to analyze the moderating effects of career adaptability and professional commitment on their relationships. Methods: A longitudinal study design was employed. Full-time nursing college students from a Chinese medical university were recruited by convenient sampling. All surveys were conducted via Wen Juan Xing (www.wjx.cn), a widely used web-based survey platform in China. Two waves of surveys were collected in the pre-internship and post-internship periods, with an interval of one year. Among 823 nursing students recruited, 692 students completed all two waves of the survey (response rate: 84.08%). Participants completed a series of questionnaires examining general demographic characteristics, perceived stress, anxiety, career adaptability, and professional commitment both before and after the internship. The bias-corrected bootstrap technique of the Hayes PROCESS macro (Model 2) was used to test the moderation effect. Results: Pre-internship perceived stress was positively associated with post-internship anxiety (β = 0.474, p < 0.001). Career adaptability would mitigate the effect of perceived stress on anxiety (β = -0.009, p < 0.01, 95% CI = [-0.013, -0.004]), and this influence became stronger for nursing college students with higher levels of career adaptability. Instead, the professional commitment would enhance the effect of perceived stress on anxiety (β = 0.004, p < 0.05, 95% CI = [0.001, 0.009]). Conclusions: Adequate career adaptability was key to alleviating anxiety among nursing interns. Nursing educators and clinical nursing managers should pay attention to cultivating the career adaptability of nursing college students in order to help them successfully achieve identity transformation and career development. Purpose: After the official definition of Open Educational Resources (OER) at the Forum on Open Courseware for Higher Education in Developing Countries in 2002, the concept was soon introduced to China and popularised among scholars, practitioners, and educators. After ten years of proliferation, it is important to explore the landscape of Chinese OER research. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach: This paper adopts social network analysis (SNA) to analyse the network defining the citations of 133 OER journal articles published in China. Findings: The findings illustrate that the academic circle of OER in China is small, which leads to restricted innovation. Most publications are produced by researchers working at comprehensive universities and normal universities (teachers colleges). Research limitations/implications: In these universities, a number of active OER researchers are emerging, but no OER research team can be identified from their citation networks. Currently, most OER research is still descriptive research, and only few case studies are being to gradually be conducted. Practical implications: As the Chinese OER research is still in the initial stage, more research projects in OER need to be explored to construct higher quality and more influential open content to achieve deep openness. Originality/value: In the literature, no one has adopted the SNA to analyse the citation network of Chinese OER research.

Background: As a non‐cognitive trait, grit plays an important role in human learning. Although students higher in grit are more likely to perform well on tests, how they learn in the process has been underexamined. Objectives: This study attempted to explore how students with different levels of grit behave and learn in an exploratory learning environment. Methods: In this study, 66 students participated in seven exploratory tasks in Snap! for approximately 60 min after a 30‐min lecture. Students were categorized into a high grit group and low grit group using a grit scale. The Mann–Whitney U test, epistemic network analysis and lag sequential analysis were used to explore the differences between groups in learning performance, technology acceptance and behavioural patterns. Results: Students with different levels of grit engaged in explorative tasks in a short period of time might not present significantly different learning performance, perceptions of usefulness and ease of use, but students higher in grit, actively engaging more different types of activities, tended to put greater sustained effort to solve the challenging task. Take Away: Although grit was not significantly correlated with learning performance when students engage in classroom‐based explorative activities, grit did predict whether students are more likely to explore and put greater sustained effort into solving the challenging task. Purpose: Various physiological and psychological negative situations experienced by nurses as a result of COVID-19 pandemic have been shown to increase their perception of organizational difficulty and decrease their career commitment, thereby accelerating the turnover rate of nurses. Resilience and career adaptability have important influences on career commitment, so there is a need to evaluate the relationships between them and the underlying mechanisms. Patients and methods: Using a cross-lagged design, the Career Adaptability Scale, the Chinese version of career commitment, and Davidson's Resilience Scale as research methods, we studied 692 nursing students for two consecutive years to evaluate the relationship among career adaptability, resilience, and career commitment. Results: Career adaptability at T1 substantially and positively predicts the career commitment at T2. Career adaptability and resilience are mutually predictive. No interaction is found between resilience and career commitment over time. There is a substantial difference in the cross-lagged relationship among career adaptability, resilience, and career commitment for low- and high-career interest. Conclusion: Our results show the importance of developing career commitment early on. Dryland winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production plays an extremely important role in the southeast of the Loess Plateau. Planting patterns have great influence on improving soil water storage and yield, and should be matched with different seeding rates. In order to assess the effect of different sowing methods on the drought resistance and stable yield of dryland wheat, a field experiment was conducted in Wenxi County Dryland Wheat Experimental Base in Shanxi Province, China. In the current study, the effects of three planting techniques (drilling sowing, furrow sowing, and film-mulched sowing) and four seeding rates (150, 225, 300, and 375 kg ha−1) were examined on water storage, dry matter formation, yield, and water use efficiency (WUE). The results showed that furrow sowing (FS) and film-mulched sowing (FM) treatments increased soil water storage in the 0–300 cm soil layer at overwintering and jointing stages. In addition, FS and FM increased soil water consumption in the 0–300 cm soil layer from overwintering to maturity of wheat. Furthermore, FS and FM significantly increased the dry matter accumulation from the overwintering to the mature stage, promoted its accumulation in vegetative organs and translocation to grains after anthesis, viz., increased yield by 6.2% and 7.9%, and WUE by 4.6% and 5.3%, respectively, as compared with those of the drilling sowing (DS) treatments. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that grain yield had a significantly positive correlation with soil water storage at overwintering and jointing. Moreover, grain yield was significantly positively correlated with soil water consumption in the 0–300 cm soil layer from jointing to maturity. Additionally, the seeding rate of 150 kg ha−1 with FS could obtain higher WUE and grain yield. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the seeding rate of 150 kg ha−1 is used with FS to improve the grain yield and WUE of dryland agricultural systems in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: CPUL1 exhibits antitumor properties against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our study provides a comprehensive overview of the properties and molecular mechanisms of CPUL1 anti-HCC using transcriptomics and metabolomics and highlights the significance of progressive metabolic failure. This may be partially attributable to autophagy blockage, which is presumed to contribute to nutrient deprivation and increased cell susceptibility to stress. Therefore, the attractive properties of CPUL1 may endow this compound with the potential of becoming a promising anti-HCC agent. Background: CPUL1, a phenazine analog, has demonstrated potent antitumor properties against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and indicates a promising prospect in pharmaceutical development. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely obscure. Methods: Multiple HCC cell lines were used to investigate the in vitro effects of CPUL1. The antineoplastic properties of CPUL1 were assessed in vivo by establishing a xenograft nude mice model. After that, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics were integrated to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic efficacy of CPUL1, highlighting an unanticipated involvement of autophagy dysregulation. Results: CPUL1 suppressed HCC cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo, thereby endorsing the potential as a leading agent for HCC therapy. Integrative omics characterized a deteriorating scenario of metabolic debilitation with CPUL1, presenting an issue in the autophagy contribution of autophagy. Subsequent observations indicated that CPUL1 treatment could impede autophagic flow by suppressing autophagosome degradation rather than its formation, which supposedly exacerbated cellular damage triggered by metabolic impairment. Moreover, the observed late autophagosome degradation may be attributed to lysosome dysfunction, which is essential for the final stage of autophagy and cargo disposal. Conclusions: Our study comprehensively profiled the anti-hepatoma characteristics and molecular mechanisms of CPUL1, highlighting the implications of progressive metabolic failure. Sediment, consisting of different aggregation fractions, is a hotspot site for transport and transformation of various pollutants including antibiotics. However, the fate of different antibiotics in aquatic sediments mediated by sediment aggregation fraction adsorption and the mechanism behinds are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of two fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin) on four aggregation fractions separated from the sediment of Taihu Lake, a typical lake contaminated by antibiotics in China. The results showed that the adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin fitted the Freundlich model, irrespective of sediment aggregation size. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin was depended on the size of sediment aggregation fractions, and the macroaggregation (> 200 μm) exhibited the strongest capacity, followed by large microaggregation (63–200 μm), medium microaggregation (20–63 μm), and small and primary microaggregation (< 20 μm). This fraction size-dependent effects of sediment aggregations on antibiotic adsorption might be closely related to the differences in their specific surface areas, organic matter contents, and surface functional groups. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin by sediment aggregation fractions was characterized by a combination of chemical and physical adsorptions, with the former being the dominant process. Compared with ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin could be more rapidly and easily absorbed by four sediment aggregation fractions, and more readily complexed with carboxyl groups on macroaggregation surface. The adsorption of two antibiotics by extracellular polymeric substance showed that tryptophan and tyrosine protein-like, humic-like substance on the surface of sediment could bind to both antibiotics through a complexation reaction. Despite market-oriented reforms, China's energy sector is subject to energy price distortions, which are believed to be a crucial determinants of energy efficiency in China. This paper investigates the impact of energy price distortions on energy efficiency in China from the perspective of spatial correlation. Using the nonradial directional distance function approach, we first estimate the provincial-level energy efficiency in China. Paying attention to spatial correlation among the provinces of China, in stage two, we identify the determinants of energy efficiency. Our empirical results suggest that price distortions have a significant impact on energy efficiency in China. This impact holds when the cross-region effect is considered, i.e., besides its own energy price distortion, a region's energy efficiency is also correlated to the adjacent provinces' energy price distortions. Furthermore, we found that the levels of energy efficiencies in adjacent provinces are highly correlated. This spatial relationship can be decomposed into the 'spillover effect' and 'warning effect'. Objectives: This study aims to understand the current situation and multiple factors affecting the core competence specializing in the maternal, neonatal and under‐five nursing in China. Background: Highly skilled nurses and midwives are essential worldwide for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries like China, due to the overwhelming COVID‐19 crisis. Method: The 890 nurses and midwives from 12 hospitals were investigated in this cross‐sectional study, with two questionnaires: the sociodemographic information and competency inventory for the registered nurses. Results: The participants reported a mean total score of 193.78 (±42.19) out of 220 and lowest in critical thinking and research ability (3.01 ± 0.82). The professional title, level, marital status, relationship quality, highest qualification, experience in specialist nurse training, participation in scientific research projects and publishing papers were the influencing factors (P <.05). Conclusions: The respondents' core competence needs improvement, especially critical regarding thinking and research ability. In addition, marriage and good or excellent relationship quality are factors that can potentially improve competence. Implications for Nursing Management: Targeted interventions for higher core nursing competence need to be implemented, especially focusing on nurses' marital status and emotional support from partners. Aim: The guideline is meant to standardize the principles, procedures, and methods for developing therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) guidelines and promoting open, transparent, scientific, and credible TDM guidelines. Methods: Division of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Chinese Pharmacological Society established guideline working groups, declared and managed conflicts of interest. The guideline working groups used the Delphi method to formulate the purpose and scope of the guidelines and questions in the PICO format, searched and synthesized evidence, and integrated with the current situation in China and TDM characteristics to preliminarily develop recommendations for the guideline for TDM guideline development in China. Through internal discussions of the guideline working groups and external peer review, the content was improved, and we eventually formulated a guideline suitable for guiding TDM‐related guidelines. Results: The guideline provides suggestions for problems to be identified and solved in the planning, development, publishing, and updating stages of TDM guidelines, including forming guideline working groups, planning guidelines, declaration and management of interests, formulating questions and selecting outcomes, preparing the planning proposal, evidence retrieval and synthesis, evidence assessment, developing recommendations, drafting guidelines, external review guidelines, publishing and disseminating guidelines, postevaluation of guidelines, and updating guidelines. Lateral particle transport in shelf/slope settings of marginal sea systems may potentially supply allochthonous particulate organic carbon (POC) to the ocean interior. The magnitude and prevalence of such processes has implications for our understanding of the functioning and efficiency of modern biological carbon pump processes, as well as for interpretation of deep ocean sediment records. Yet, ages and relative contribution of POC from different sources to deep ocean basins are much less understood. Here, based on radiocarbon (Fm, fraction modern), stable carbon (δ13Corg), and other geochemical analysis of particles intercepted by time‐series sediment traps deployed at three different depths (1,000, 2,150, and 3,200 m), we constrain the source of the sinking POC in the deep basin of northern South China Sea (SCS). The results show that the modern POC derived from surface ocean productivity, acting as the vertical vector, accounts for 87% ± 4% of sinking POC on average, while the lateral vector (aged POC hosted on resuspended sediment) comprises the remainder (13%). The contribution of laterally supplied POC increases with depth and is composed of aged POC derived from several sources. The majority stems from sediment resuspension of the northeastern SCS slope, that entrains aged marine POC (dominant), fossil OC, and soil OC (least significant). The diminished proportion of fossil OC in deep basin sinking POC relative to Taiwan‐proximal areas is likely due to its dispersion via resuspension–deposition loops and dilution by POC stemming from modern surface ocean productivity during the delivery. Plain Language Summary: Quantification of fresh and aged sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) and their vertical and lateral transfer in the marginal sea systems is crucial to budget the global carbon cycle. The South China Sea (SCS) is one of the largest marginal seas in the world, the ages, and relative contribution of POC from different sources to deep basins are poorly constrained. In this study, we provide a first assessment on the age and source of sinking POC in the deep northern SCS basin based on radiocarbon (Fm), stable carbon (δ13Corg), and other geochemical parameters. The results show that 87% ± 4% of sinking POC in the deep basin (1,000–3200 m) derives from modern surface ocean productivity via vertical export. The aged POC supplied via lateral transport has minimal impact on the fluxes and temporal dynamics of the sinking POC. However, the contribution of laterally supplied POC increases with depth and is composed of aged POC derived from several sources: aged marine POC, fossil OC, and soil OC. Purpose: The global COVID-19 pandemic impacted the healthcare systems of every nation. The scarcity of medical protective equipment led to impulse buying at the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in China which resulted in stockpiling and the increase of prices by retailers and insufficiencies among frontline workers. This situation impacted epidemic control work and market order and is the context from which this paper identifies how the scarcity of medical protective equipment affected Chinese consumers' impulse buying based on the theories of S-O-R model and bandwagon effect. The research provides insight into the mechanism of mediation (fear of missing out) and moderation (bandwagon) in the relationship between scarcity and impulse buying. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study uses convenience sampling, surveying 488 Chinese consumers through an online questionnaire. Smart-PLS was used to test the hypotheses. Findings: The empirical findings demonstrate that scarcity makes consumers fear missing the chance of getting protective medical equipment, leading ultimately to impulse buying. Besides, the scarcity effect on consumers' impulse buying was found to depend on other consumers' follow up behaviour in such emergency situations. Research Limitations/Implications: The findings provide managerial and theoretical insight and a point of reference for businesses in the implementation of a scarcity strategy. The findings will also prove useful to the Chinese Risk Response Department as it continuously improves its responses to the risk of consumers' impulse buying during a pandemic. Background: Lumbrokinase has been widely used for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in China; however, because rigorously designed studies are lacking, safety and efficacy of lumbrokinase in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke remains largely unknown. In this multicenter, randomized, and controlled trial, we aim to compare lumbrokinase plus aspirin versus aspirin alone in patients with acute ischemic stroke.Methods: A total of 220 eligible participants will be randomized to either the intervention or control group with a 1:1 ratio. These participants must be diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke for the first time, whose symptoms appear within 72 h. Their NIHSS score must be greater than 5 and less than 15, and their age must be between 35 and 85 years old. They must have not received intravenous thrombolysis, arterial thrombolysis, or intravascular intervention. Participants in the intervention group will be treated with lumbrokinase plus aspirin for the first 90 days. Participants in the control group will use placebo plus aspirin for the first 90 days. Then, all participants will be treated with aspirin only and followed up for another 90 days (180-day follow-up). The primary outcome is the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score. The secondary outcomes are National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Scale score, coagulation function, and serum hypersensitive C-reactive protein. The exploratory outcomes are fasting lipid panel, recurrence rate, the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, and the mortality rate. Safety evaluations include liver function and kidney function, serum fibrinogen, adverse events, serious adverse events, and bleeding events. Green technology innovation is an important instrument to promote green development. It is a long-standing and typical fact in China that the behavior of local governments in setting economic growth targets similar to those of neighboring regions contradicts the unbalanced development between Chinese regions. Exploring the impact of this phenomenon on green technology innovation reveals, to some extent, whether the current economic growth target strategy is still applicable to China's green development. To answer this question, this study used light and economic growth target data to calculate the deviation of the target from the actual resource endowment and empirically analyzed its impact on green innovation with a zero-inflated negative binomial regression model. The study found that the deviation from target and green technology innovation had an 'inverted U-shaped' relationship, i.e., a moderate increase in the economic growth target could motivate local governments to seek new skills (e.g., green technology) to fulfill their commitments. However, an excessive deviation from resource endowment could force governments to distort resource allocation in order to increase economic growth and inhibit green innovation. Heterogeneity analysis showed that: 1 Compared with utility model patents, green invention patents faced a greater crowding-out effect. 2 Companies in non-state, small, medium, and micro, as well as non-polluting industries were more vulnerable to green innovation. 3 The financial pressure, internal control level and innovation ability of enterprises, the innovation environment, the legal environment, and the green development level of regions all affected the relationship between goal deviation and green innovation. Accordingly, it is proposed that in order to boost green development, China needs to further optimize the economic growth target strategy, improve the institutional mechanism to promote green innovation, and improve the performance assessment. Some studies show that cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may improve overall survival and is a possible curative treatment for selected colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with restricted peritoneal metastasis (PM). The value of HIPEC in preventing PM of CRC is still controversial. In this retrospective propensity score matching (PSM) cohort study, all patients with cT4N0-2M0 undergoing treatment at a single institution in China (2014–2018) were reviewed. The 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) was set as the primary outcome, and the 3-year PM rate was also analyzed. 220 patients were included in this study for analysis. After 1:3 PSM: HIPEC (n = 45) and No HIPEC (n = 135). Through analysis, it was found that prophylactic HIPEC correlated to better DFS [hazard ratio (HR) 0.43, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.19–0.95; p = 0.037], and N2 stage correlated to worse DFS [HR 1.97, 95 % CI 1.09–3.56; p = 0.025]. For laparoscopic surgery subgroup analyses, 3-year PM rate of patients with laparoscopic surgery was 13.8 % in No HIPEC group, and 2.6 % in HIPEC group (p = 0.070). Besides, no post-operative death occurred, the anastomotic leakage rate was 2.2 % in HIPEC group and 0.7 % in the control group (p = 0.439). Prophylactic HIPEC may improve the prognosis in patients with cT4N0-1M0 CRC, but not in cT4N2M0 CRC, and it does not significantly increase surgery-related complications. Laparoscopic surgery followed by HIPEC for T4 stage CRC may not increase risk of PM. • Our cohort study has shown that prophylactic HIPEC reduced the risk of PM and remarkably improved DFS in T4 patients, especially in cT4N0-1M0 CRC. • Intraoperative or early postoperative prophylactic HIPEC did not significantly increase the incidence of surgery-related complications. • Laparoscopic surgery followed by HIPEC for T4 stage CRC may not increase the risk of PM. With supply chain management's increasing importance in work safety, this paper establishes the leading enterprise with core enterprises as work safety units. These guide the small and medium-sized enterprises within the supply chain to focus on improving work safety according to the leading position of the supply chain's core enterprises. Therefore, the Stackelberg game model is applied to build and explain supply chain node-enterprises' optimal centralized and decentralized operational decisions. This research was conducted in the context of enterprise work safety constraints' influence on the manufacturing supply chain's equilibrium results. It also reveals the necessity in supply chain node enterprises' contract coordination design by comparing the two decision models' equilibrium results. Ultimately, the manufacturing supply chain's overall profit and work safety can reach a level that includes centralized decisions through revenue- and cost-sharing contracts. Furthermore, profits to the supply chain's node enterprises also improve, and a Pareto optimality is achieved. An enlightened management demonstrates the importance of core enterprises' leading position in the supply chain, and the supply chain node enterprises' levels of work safety, product demand, and total profit can be promoted through revenue- and cost-sharing contracts. Maximizing grain yields with effective fertilization technologies and minimizing nitrogen losses is essential in agroecosystems. In this research, we conducted a two-year field experiment to explore whether dripline spacing and fertilization rate would affect maize grain yield. Two dripline spacings (i.e., one drip line per row of maize with a row space of 60 cm and one drip line per two rows of maize) and two fertilization rates (i.e., high fertilization level: N, 180 kg ha−1; P2O5, 90 kg ha−1; and K2O, 90 kg ha−1 and low level: N, 139.5 kg ha−1; P2O5, 76.5 kg ha−1; and K2O, 76.5 kg ha−1) were employed in this research. The results showed that maize yield was significantly affected by both dripline spacing and fertilization rate. The maize yield was 10.2% higher in the treatment with one drip line per two rows than that in the treatment with one drip line per row. Maize yield increased by 10.9% at the high fertilization level compared to that at the low fertilization level. The quantity of cumulative ammonia volatilization was reduced by 15.1% with one drip line per two rows compared to that with one drip line per row, whereas it increased by 26.9% at the high fertilization level compared with that at the low fertilization level. These results indicated that one drip line per two rows with a high fertilization rate increased the yield and could reduce the environmental burden, which may be economically beneficial and environmentally sound for maize fertigation for green agricultural development. Thirty experimental Xuanwei hams were processed by a traditional method using green hams from local Xuanhe pigs of Xuanwei, Yunnan province, PR China. Samples of Biceps femoris were collected from six hams randomly at the five key processing stages, that is green ham, salting, air drying, aging for 3 months, and aging for 7 months. Physicochemical properties and water‐soluble small molecular (WSSM) compounds change during the processing period of Xuanwei ham were evaluated. Moisture contents, water activity, and total nitrogen contents (TN) decreased significantly (p <.05). On the contrary, chloride content, weight loss rate, non‐protein nitrogen content (NPN), and the protein hydrolysis index (P.I.) were observed a significant increase during the processing. The WSSM compounds in various processing stages of Xuanwei ham were analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) technology. A total of 54 WSSM compounds were found, consisting of 26 amino acids and their derivatives, 10 organic acids, 6 nucleic acids, 4 amines and ammonia compounds, 3 alcohols, 2 sugars, and 3 other WSSM compounds. After aging for 7 months, the content of free amino acids in hams reached 58.93 mg/g, and the main amino acids were glutamic acid and alanine. In this study, the physicochemical properties of Xuanwei ham were evaluated effectively, which provided the basis for the quality control of Xuanwei ham. Practical applications: Dry‐cured Xuanwei ham is a traditional fermented meat product in Yunnan province of southwest China. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in physicochemical properties and water‐soluble low molecular weight compounds of dry‐cured Xuanwei ham during the production process. Our findings thus provide a theoretical analysis on the quality changes of dry‐cured Chinese Xuanwei ham during processing. Background: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to measure the personal attenuation ratings (PARs) in Chinese workers wearing hearing protection devices (HPDs), to evaluate the effectiveness of the single number rating (SNR), the noise reduction rating (NRR), and the associated derated values of earplugs; and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of one‐on‐one training along with earplug fit testing on PAR improvement. Methods: Noise exposure measurements, one‐on‐one training, and fit tests to measure earplug attenuation were conducted at nine manufacturing facilities located in eastern China from 2016 to 2017. 503 workers participated in the study. Ninety‐three percent were male. 199 workers were provided one‐on‐one training. Results: Before training, 14% and 15% of the workers achieved the attenuation predicted by the manufacturer's SNR and NRR, 56% and 65% exceeded the derated SNR and NRR, respectively. Following one‐on‐one training, mean PAR improved significantly by 15 dB (p < 0.01); 26% of the workers achieved SNR and NRR, 79% and 91% met the associated derated values, respectively. Conclusions: Labeled noise attenuation ratings and their derated values overestimated the actual level of attenuation among workers wearing HPDs. Although exposure to antibiotics at a critical developmental time window has been implicated in mental health in observational and experimental studies, very limited bio-monitoring data are available for exposure to antibiotics associated with child mental disorders. The goal of our study was to examine the association between urinary exposure of children to antibiotics and mental health. The participants were 278 children from 256 eligible families in the urban–rural fringe of Fuyang city in China since June in 2017. A single-point urine sample was collected to measure the antibiotic concentrations to characterize the exposure levels. A total of 45 antibiotics from nine classes and their two metabolites were monitored through liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. We used multivariable regressions to estimate the covariate-adjusted associations between urine–antibiotic concentrations and mental impairments, as assessed using the parent version of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Among the participants, ciprofloxacin was associated with an increased risk of mental disorders at both lower concentrations (OR = 4.06; 95% CI 1.69–9.78) and higher concentrations OR = 6.04; 95% CI 2.59–14.08). After categorizing the detected antibiotics, the positive associations were observed between abnormal score in total difficulties and higher levels exposure to fluoroquinolones (OR = 2.83, 95% CI 1.38–5.80) and antibiotics preferred for veterinary use (PVAs) (OR = 3.20; 95% CI 1.41–7.27), respectively. Older adults have gained great media attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they were believed to be vulnerable to the novel virus based on clinical data and epidemiological evidence. The high volume of media coverage played an important role in calling for improved public health services for the older population. Nevertheless, problematic media representations of older people might evoke or amplify ageism during the pandemic. Therefore, drawing on empirical data collected from five mainstream Chinese media outlets between January 3 and May 3, 2020, this study examined how the media constructed the vulnerability of older adults and its underlying ageist thinking during the pandemic. The findings showed that the media had clear preferences in constructing older people as passive recipients while seeking resources from families, public institutions and governments at various levels to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the media adopted a biomedical-centred framework presenting older people as a homogenous group that was vulnerable to the pandemic. In addition, we found that the media representations of older adults intensified the dichotomised relationship between the young and the old, causing the younger generations to perceive older people as a 'threat' to public health. Moving beyond the Chinese case, this article appeals to the media to be socially responsible by avoiding the stereotyping of the older population and uniting the whole society to combat COVID-19. The findings of this study will help raise awareness among policymakers and care service providers, which is crucial to eliminating ageist attitudes across society and to further allowing the values of older individuals to be fully recognised. Objective: To examine the associations between urinary antibiotics from various sources and depression in the elderly using the biomonitoring method. Methods: In the current study, we investigated 990 elderly individuals (≥ 60 years old) from a community-based elderly cohort in West Anhui, China. The participants were interviewed by the Geriatric Depression Scale and self-developed questionnaires. A total of 45 antibiotics belonging to nine categories were screened in urine samples by the developed liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry method. Creatinine-corrected concentrations of antibiotics in urines were used to assess their exposure. Logistic regression analysis was employed to test the relationships between exposure to antibiotics and depression. Results: Compared to the control group, the multinomial logistic regression analyses showed the elderly exposed to higher concentrations of azithromycin (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.09–3.00) and sulfaclozine (OR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.05–2.28) had increased risks of depression, respectively. After categorizing the detected antibiotics, tetracyclines (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.02–2.16) and veterinary antibiotics (VAs) (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.06–2.20) were positively correlated with increased risks of depression. After stratified by sex, the VAs (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.13–3.71) at higher concentrations were associated with elevated risks of depression in males, while the associations between depression and antibiotic exposures were observed in tetracyclines (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.04–2.85) and all antibiotics (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.01–2.94) at higher levels in females, respectively. Notably, after the stratification by age, the significant associations were mainly present in the subjects under the age of 70. Conclusions: Our findings reveal that azithromycin, sulfaclozine, tetracyclines, and the VAs were significantly associated with elevated risks of depression in the elderly. Purpose: A growing number of Chinese individuals of reproductive age will face the choice of accepting or refusing expanded carrier screening (ECS). This study aimed to explore the awareness, wishes, and possible misconceptions of ECS among this population, as well as factors affecting their decision-making. Methods: Chinese reproductive-aged individuals in Eastern China who sought cell-free fetal DNA screening and peripheral blood karyotype were invited to complete a 31-item ECS survey by scanning a specific quick response code. We evaluated the relationship between awareness, attitudes, and intentions to participate in ECS, along with possible misconceptions. Results: Overall, 93.1% of participants intended to undergo ECS at their expenses, and 53.6% indicated they would pay less than 1000 CNY (approximately 145 USD) for the test. Around 96.5% of participants had misconceptions about ECS and genetic diseases. Participants whose first reaction was interest, who had prior awareness of the test, or who perceived benefits were more likely to intend to use ECS (p < 0.001). Participants with a bachelor's degree or above or with a household income over 150,000 CNY (approximately 21,700 USD) would be more likely to pay ≥ 1000 CNY (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our study indicates that overall, the Eastern Chinese reproductive-aged population has positive attitudes towards ECS, although there are some misconceptions about ECS and genetic disorders. Population-based ECS appears to be desired by the reproductive-aged people in Eastern China. Policy networks have strong explanatory power for policy processes and policy results. Previous studies have proven the importance of the role played by policy collaboration networks. Recently, the value of policy topic networks has gradually been revealed. However, there has been a lack of interpretation of policy results through topic network characteristics. Therefore, a comparative research framework for policy collaboration and topic networks is proposed. Based on a search and screening results for China's energy policies, we construct a policy collaboration network composed of policymaking agencies and their collaborations and a topic network composed of policy topics and their co-occurrences. After analysing the characteristics of institutions and topics, we empirically test hypotheses concerning the relationship between the network characteristics of these two networks and policy diffusion in China. We find that in policy collaboration networks, the centrality of agencies has a positive effect on the degree of policy diffusion and the structural holes of agencies exert an inverted U-shaped effect on the degree of policy diffusion. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. (Labiatae) (SMB) is applied clinically for management of diabetic osteoporosis in China, and research results has suggested its potential action on renin–angiotensin system (RAS). This study screens and explores naturally occurring bioactive constituents from the root of SMB acting on renin activity and evaluates its osteoprotective efficacy in diabetic mice. Human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells, engineered to express human renin, were used as an in vitro model to identify bioactive compound, tanshinone IIA, inhibiting renin activity. The C57BL/6 mice (n = 10 in each group) with diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ) were intraperitoneally injected with tanshinone IIA (10 and 30 mg/kg). The mice without STZ treatment and the diabetic mice treated with aliskiren were used as non-diabetic control and positive control, respectively. Tanshinone IIA was found to display inhibitory effects on renin activity of HEK-293 cells; moreover, it down-regulated protein expression of ANG II in human renin-expressed HEK-293 cells. Treatment of diabetic mice with tanshinone IIA with both doses could significantly decrease ANG II level in serum (from 16.56 ± 1.70 to 10.86 ± 0.68 and 9.14 ± 1.31 pg/mL) and reduce ANG II expression in bone, consequently improving trabecular bone mineral density and micro-structure of proximal tibial end and increasing trabecular bone area of distal femoral end in diabetic mice. This study revealed beneficial effects of tanshinone IIA on bone of diabetic mice, and potentially suggested the application of Salvia miltiorrhiza in the treatment of osteoporosis and drug development of tanshinone IIA as a renin inhibitor. Objective. Neuregulin 1 (NRG 1) is a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family and is believed to play an important role in neuroplasticity. However, the relationship between NRG 1 and vascular dementia (VaD) is poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between neuregulin 1 and VaD. Patients and Methods. From October 2018 to September 2020, 93 VaD patients and 79 control populations who attended Liaocheng People's Hospital were included in the study. Baseline characteristics including age, gender, years of education, HDL, LDL, FBG, SBP, and DBP are collected. At the same time, peripheral blood was collected, and the concentration of serum NRG 1 was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All research subjects received professional cognitive function assessment. Results. A total of 93 VaD patients and 79 controls were enrolled. There was no significant difference in age, gender, years of education, HDL, LDL, FBG, SBP, and DBP between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, compared with the control group, VaD patients have lower MoCA and higher serum NRG 1 levels, and the difference is statistically significant (p < 0.001). The correlation analysis of MoCA and baseline characteristics showed that the MoCA score in VaD was significantly negatively correlated with serum NRG 1 (r = − 0.374 , p = 0.036). The results of multivariate regression showed that the MoCA score of VaD patients was only associated with NRG 1 (β = 0.258 , p = 0.012). Conclusions. The concentration of serum NRG 1 in VaD patients is significantly increased, which may be an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment in VaD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the associations between dietary factors and breast cancer (BC) molecular subtypes. The retrospective cases were confirmed by pathological diagnosis with breast cancer were gathered in two major hospitals in Xuzhou city, China, from 2015 to 2016. These cases were classified by the meeting standard of 13th St Gallen: luminal A, luminal B, Her‐2 overexpression, and triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes. A 1:2 paired retrospective case–control study with 210 cases and 420 controls was conducted to evaluate individual dietary intake, by food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and estimate odds ratios (ORs), by the Cox regression model. For overall breast cancer patients, the more frequency of red meat (OR = 1.002, 95% CI = 1.001–1.004) and salted food (OR = 1.003, 95% CI = 1.001–1.005) were statistically significantly associated with a greater risk of breast cancer. Beans (OR = 0.997, 95% CI = 0.995–0.999), white meat (OR = 0.993, 95% CI = 0.989–0.997), aquatic products (OR = 0.990, 95% CI = 0.984–0.996), vegetables (OR = 0.999, 95% CI = 0.999–0.999), fruit (OR = 0.998, 95% CI = 0.997–0.999), and green tea (OR = 0.997, 95% CI = 0.994–0.999) were significantly associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. For luminal breast cancer patients, beans (OR = 0.997, 95% CI = 0.994–0.999), white meat (OR = 0.992, 95% CI = 0.987–0.997), green tea (OR = 0.995, 95% CI = 0.991–0.999), and milk (OR = 0.998, 95% CI = 0.996–0.999) were protective factors. While for nonluminal breast cancer, red meat was not included in the equation, and beans (OR = 0.989, 95% CI = 0.981–0.997), white meat (OR = 0.989, 95% CI = 0.981–0.998), vegetables (OR = 0.998, 95% CI = 0.997–0.999), and milk (OR = 0.994, 95% CI = 0.989–0.999) still showed a significantly reduced risk of nonluminal breast cancer. A Computable Mine Safety Supervision (CMSS) model is constructed based on agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) technology and the conservation of resources (COR). This model aims to solve the mining safety problems involved with illegal mining operations and burnout among mining supervisors, in China. The model includes several types of agents: supervision agents, decision support agents, functional coordination agents, and miner agents, and it uses the Netlogo simulation platform to simulate the influence of reward and punishment on agent behavior. The simulation determines the decision support degree to gauge the influence of functional coordination and miner behavior on the burnout rate of supervision agents. We analyze the macroscopic emergence law of the simulation results. The results show the following: (1) Job Situation Adaptability (JSA) ∈ [−6.02, 2.64] ∪ [16.9, 21.93], which uses a reward strategy to guide miners to choose safe behavior and (2) JSA ∈ [2.64, 16.9], which uses a punishment strategy to restrict unsafe behavior. The decision support coefficient Sc has the greatest influence on the supervision agent's job burnout. The functional coordination coefficient Fc has the second highest influence on job burnout and the processing effectiveness coefficient Ec has the least influence. According to the simulation results, suggestions for improving the mine safety supervision system are put forward and an improved safety management decision-making basis for reducing mine accidents is provided. Studies suggested that greenness could reduce death risks related to ambient exposure to particulate matter (PM), while the available evidence was mixed across the globe and substantially exiguous in low- and middle-income countries. By conceiving an individual-level case-crossover study in central China, this analysis primarily aimed to quantify PM-mortality associations and examined the modification effect of greenness on the relationship. We investigated a total of 177,058 nonaccidental death cases from 12 counties in central China, 2008–2012. Daily residential exposures to PM 2.5 (aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µm), PM c (aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 µm), and PM 10 (aerodynamic diameter <10 µm) were assessed at a 1 × 1-km resolution through satellite-derived machine-learning models. Residential surrounding greenness was assessed using satellite-derived enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at multiple buffer sizes (250, 500, and 1000 m). To quantify the acute mortality risks associated with short-term exposure to PM 2.5 , PM c , and PM 10 , a time-stratified case-crossover design was utilized in conjunction with a conditional logistic regression model in our main analyses. To investigate the effect modification of greenness on PM-mortality associations, we grouped death cases into low, medium, and high greenness levels using cutoffs of 25th and 75th percentiles of NDVI or EVI exposure, and examined potential effect heterogeneity in PM-related mortality risks among these groups. Mean concentrations (standard deviation) on the day of death were 73.8 (33.4) μg/m3 for PM 2.5 , 43.9 (17.3) μg/m3 for PM c , and 117.5 (44.9) μg/m3 for PM 10. Size-fractional PM exposures were consistently exhibited significant associations with elevated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality. For every increase of 10-μg/m3 in PM exposure, percent excess risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality were 0.271 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.010, 0.533) and 0.487 (95% CI: 0.125, 0.851) for PM 2.5 at lag-01 day, 0.731 (95% CI: 0.108, 1.359) and 1.140 (95% CI: 0.267, 2.019) for PM c at lag-02 day, and 0.271 (95% CI: 0.010, 0.533) and 0.386 (95% CI: 0.111, 0.662) for PM 10 at lag-01 day, respectively. Compared to participants in the low-level greenness areas, those being exposed to higher greenness were found to be at lower PM-associated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality. Consistent evidence for alleviated risks in medium or high greenness group was observed in subpopulations of female and younger groups (age <75). Short-term exposure to particulate air pollution was associated with elevated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory death, and individuals residing in higher neighborhood greenness possessed lower risk of PM-related mortality. This paper presents an analysis of the conceptualization of massive open online courses (MOOCs) by major influencers in Chinese higher education. Using critical discourse analysis, predominantly from university resources, a map of the discursive construction of MOOCs is presented and interpreted. The centralized orientation of decision making in Chinese higher education is reflected in how MOOCs have been introduced, envisioned, and utilized in China. With the increase of Chinese MOOCs, elite universities are able to capitalize on their comparative advantages, which may be counter to the true intent of MOOCs, which is to raise teaching standards across sectors. This paper serves to illuminate how MOOCs may reinforce the status of elite universities, thereby having the opposite effect to their real intention of democratizing higher education for the masses. The strategy of using MOOCs to improve teaching quality and augment the worldwide reputation of Chinese institutions is central to China's reinvigorated focus on higher education, which counters the widely held perception, and intention, that MOOCs are vehicles for widening access.
